Hyundai IONIQ 5 – First drive to the cabin.

H
yundai’s new IONIQ 5 electric car is based on the 45 concept unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019, and is the first electric Hyundai model to use a dedicated electric platform which was developed exclusively by Hyundai and sister brand KIA. CLEAN, CRISP DESIGN The clean, crisp and minimalist design language of the IONIQ 5 mid-size SUV will feature on all electric Hyundai’s from now on, and that can only be a good thing, as the IONIQ 5 looks ultramodern and super-stylish from every angle. All future electric Hyundai’s will bear the IONIQ name, as this has now become a sub-brand for the company’s zero-emission models. At the front, the IONIQ 5 gets a clamshell bonnet with minimal panel gaps, which optimises aerodynamics in order to boost battery range. The eye-catching front bumper features a ‘V’ shape and incorporates the car’s daytime running lights, which consist of tiny pixel-like clusters.
Additionally, the IONIQ 5 features ‘aero-optimised’ wheels in sizes up to 20-inches, which are the largest ever fitted to an electric car from Hyundai. In a similar fashion to the Tesla Model 3, the IONIQ 5 features door handles which sit flush with the surface and pop out when the car is unlocked, and this is yet another bid to optimise aerodynamic smoothness. The strong shape of the car’s C-pillars reflect back to the 45 concept, which was itself inspired by the Hyundai Pony – Hyundai’s first production model from 1975. AMAZING SPACE The ultra-spacious and airy cabin of the IONIQ 5 features what Hyundai refer to as a ‘Universal Island’ (trim dependent), which is
a large moveable centre console that can slide back and forth by 140mm. This ingenious design, in combination with the flat floor, allows greater freedom of movement inside the cabin, while eco-friendly and sustainable materials in the interior trim consist of recycled bottles, plantbased and natural wool, and ecoprocessed leather with plant-based extracts. Boot space can be expanded from 588-litres to 1,591-litres when the second row of seats are folded down. A small lidded storage area under the bonnet can be used for transporting a sports bag or some small bags of shopping, while the charging cables for the car can be located under the boot floor for easy access. A configurable dual-screen cockpit with a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12-inch customisable digital gauges add a real high-tech feel
TRIM AND BATTERY OPTIONS There are four trim levels available in the IONIQ 5 – Executive, Executive Plus, Premium and Premium Plus – with a battery size of 58kW available in all but Premium Plus trim, or a 73kW battery available from Executive Plus trim level up. All variants come with a single-motor (rear-wheel-drive), with a dual-motor (four-wheeldrive) available as an option in Premium Plus trim. Easy charge options enable the IONIQ 5 to be charged in as little as 5 hours (0-100% 58kW) from a domestic wall box charger, with the option of charging from 10-80% at a rapid public charger in just 18 minutes (73kW battery). Additionally, a 5 minute charge at a rapid public charger will give the battery an additional range of up to 111km. The IONIQ 5 is equipped with an innovative 800V battery system for some of the fastest charging times possible today, and is also compatible with 400V charging and AC charging.
Featuring ‘Hyundai SmartSense’ cutting-edge Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, the IONIQ 5 has been equipped with the very latest safety and driving assist systems for added peace of mind. It is also the first Hyundai to feature Level 2 autonomous safety technology which controls speed and distance, and assists the driver when changing lanes. TEST CAR REVIEW The IONIQ 5 that I had on a 48-hour test recently was an Executive Plus model with a 73kW battery. Finished in dazzling Atlas White paintwork, the car looked breathtakingly beautiful, while its unique and distinctive front and rear lighting signature added even more excitement to the striking design. significantly updated version of Mazda's stylish, spacious and dynamic SUV, the CX-5, goes on sale throughout Europe early next year. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 introduces Mi-Drive drive mode selection, enhanced driving dynamics, new styling and stronger grade differentiation, improvements to on-board packaging and practicality, and an expanded range of safety features. The 2022 CX-5 introduces Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive), which enables the driver to select the most appropriate drive mode with one touch of a switch. Some model grades equipped with i-Activ AWD further benefit from an Off-Road Mode, which makes driving feel more natural on un-made and slippery surfaces. Mazda’s next generation of Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture has now been applied to the 2022 CX-5, further evolving the bodyshell, suspension and seats to enhance ride comfort and reduce fatigue. Road noise has also been greatly reduced, particularly when driving on rough surfaces such as gravel. The new Fiesta’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost Hybrid engine is available with 125 PS and 155 PS power outputs, combined with a six-speed manual transmission. WLTP fuel efficiency from 4.9 l/100 km and CO2 emissions from 111 g/km 2 represent a 5 per cent improvement compared with a non-hybrid 125 PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, with savings of up to 10 per cent in city driving scenarios according to Ford data. Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is offered with 100 PS, delivering from 5.2 l/100 km and 118 g/km CO2 WLTP. Like the EcoBoost Hybrid variant, the engine utilises high-pressure direct fuel injection, Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing and an offset crankshaft design for refined operation, and is available in with a six-speed manual transmission.

The two-piece, reversible load-space floorboard and the tailgate sill are on the same level to aid loading. Newground models also feature a floorboard with a water-resistant side for wet or dirty items. The updated CX-5’s range of i-Activsense safety systems now includes Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS). CTS helps reduce driver fatigue by assisting with accelerator, brake pedal and steering operations when stuck in traffic jams. Finally, the front Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH) have also evolved to give finer control over light distribution. Successive updates and refinements to every aspect of the vehicle have led to the CX-5 growing into a core model accounting for about 21% of the European annual sales.

Renault Mégane Hatchback with E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid R
enault is strengthening its electrified vehicle offering in Ireland with the announcement of the Renault Mégane Hatch E-Tech Plug-In Hybrid, the new fivedoor model complementing the Sports Tourer version that is already available with the advanced powertrain. The Mégane Hatch E-Tech Plug-In Hybrid combines generous performance with incredible efficiency and low running costs, while customers can avail of SEAI grant support to the tune of €600 towards installation of a home charging point. The Mégane Hatch Plug-In Hybrid is in Renault dealerships today and customers can choose from two well-equipped trim levels – the Iconic E-Tech Plug-In Hybrid 160 Auto and the sporty R.S. Line E-Tech Plug-In Hybrid 160 Auto.
Both versions feature an efficient 1.6-litre petrol engine complemented by two electric motors, resulting in combined fuel economy of 1.2l/100km (WLTP) and CO2 emissions of only 28g/km (WLTP). An electric-only range of 50km means many drivers’ regular daily journeys can be covered without resorting to petrol power, while the efficient hybrid powertrain offers the ability to cover longer distances without the need to recharge. Efficiency isn’t to the detriment of performance either, the 160hp drivetrain enabling a 0-100km/h time of 9.4 seconds and a top speed of 182km/h. The new hybrid is more powerful than any other Mégane, with the exception of the incredible RS and Trophy versions, while also offering favourable Total Cost of
Ownership arguments. Both trim levels feature an extensive standard specification, which includes an electronic parking brake, front and rear electric windows, cruise control with speed limiter, 10-inch TFT driver’s display, Eco Mode, EV mode button, MULTI-SENSE with three driving modes and eight ambient lighting colours, and a hands-free key card. Standard safety equipment includes front and rear parking sensors, Hill Start Assist and the Visio System that incorporates lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high/low beam. The Iconic trim level stands out with such features as 16inch ‘Impulse’ diamond-cut alloy wheels, leather steering wheel, and frameless rear-view mirror. Its EASYLINK navigation
system ensures customers are well connected with two USB ports, Bluetooth, and smartphone integration including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay that are accessible through its 7-inch touchscreen. The R.S. Line version gains exclusive body-coloured R.S. Line bumpers, 17-inch ‘Monthlery’ diamond-cut alloy wheels, and an R.S. leather steering wheel. Safety is further enhanced with the fitment of the Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS), rear parking camera and hands-free parking, while the EASYLINK
navigation system has a larger 9.3-inch touchscreen. Customers will be able to further personalise their Mégane Hatch Plug-In Hybrid with options such as the Signature Pack, which adds adaptive cruise control, Lane Keeping Assistance, E-Call, BOSE audio and a luxurious leather interior. The Mégane Hatch Plug-In Hybrid uses the same technology that debuted on the Captur E-Tech hybrid, which was engineered with input from the Alpine F1 team. It combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 9.8kW lithium-ion battery and two electric motors,
together with the automatic, multi-mode dog gearbox that features in all other E-Tech models. In operation, it starts the vehicle in 100 per cent electric mode, significantly reducing the gap in acceleration during gear changes. This means a smoother, more refined drive plus better performance. The hybrid powertrain’s efficiency allows significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Battery charging on a home charging point takes as little as 3 hours at 3.6kW, while the included domestic cable enables charging from a 3-pin plug.
In addition, the hybrid powertrain is designed to use the optimal energy output to recharge the battery whenever the energy created is more than the required power. Then, kinetic energy recovered during deceleration or braking can be transformed into electrical energy to recharge the battery. aunched at the beginning of 2021 in Europe, New C4 and ë-C4 - 100% ëlectric have already established themselves in the highly competitive C-hatchback segment. New C4 and ë-C4 are now key players in this market and have secured more than 30,000 registrations in the first six months in Europe. “With New C4, Citroën is making a strong comeback in the compact hatchback segment, thanks to its bold styling and well-known levels of comfort. New C4 is also the only model in its segment to offer the freedom to choose between petrol and diesel combustion engines, and a
100% battery-electric option, which is making its mark on electric vehicle sales in Europe, climbing onto the podium on the electric compact hatchback segment,” says Arnaud Ribault – Head of Citroën Brand, Europe. A FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE IN EUROPE IN THE FIRST HALF-YEAR In Spain (the model’s country of manufacture), New C4 took second place in the compact hatchback segment in the first six months of 2021 – behind the Toyota Corolla – with a segment share of 9.5%. In Portugal, Citroën’s new compact hatch came third in the first half of the year, with a
segment share of almost 12%. Elsewhere in Europe, New C4 stands out in both Italy and Belgium in particular, where it is ranked sixth in its category.

At a 150kW DC fast charging station, it is possible to charge the battery from 10-80% in approximately 33 minutes – just enough time to rest, or have a meal during a long journey. TEST CAR My test car was an XC40 Recharge Pro Pure Electric P8, which was finished in striking Fusion Red metallic paintwork with charcoal leather and Nubuck upholstery, and sporty 20” 5 x double-spoke black diamond-cut alloy wheels. Key standard features in range-topping ‘Pro’ trim level also include full LED headlights with a headlight cleaning system, front fog lights with cornering function, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pilot Assist, heated steering wheel, heated front & rear seats, BLIS (Blind-
spot Information System), Cross Traffic Alert with Autobrake, Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation, park assist to the front, rear and sides, a 360-degree camera, tilt & slide panoramic sunroof, power driver seat with memory, power passenger seat, power-folding rear head restraints, and a Harmon Kardon premium sound system with 12 speakers (600W) and Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound. My test car was smooth and settled at motorway speeds, while remaining comfortable and composed over rutted city streets too. Lots of grip from the XC40’s large tyres, and an abundance of performance from the powerful 73kWh battery and twin motors, provides a confident and mature driving experience from behind the wheel. The XC40’s electric motors can quickly move the car along in calming quietness, while the brakes respond consistently when the pedal is pressed, plus there is the added advantage of a ‘one-pedal’ driving function so that just lifting off the accelerator
gradually slows the car down to a complete stop. This regenerative braking function sends energy back to the car’s battery to enhance the driving range, so it serves a very useful dual purpose. The elevated seating position in the XC40 provides a good view of the road ahead, helped further by relatively slim windscreen pillars. You also get large door mirrors, so you can see clearly what is driving up alongside (with the added benefit of BLIS in my test car), and an autodimming rear-view mirror is standard. TRIM & ENGINE OPTIONS Four trim levels are available in the New Toyota Corolla Hybrid Hatchback – Luna, Luna Sport, Sol, and range-topping GR Sport. The only powertrain in the new Toyota Corolla range is a petrol-electric Hybrid, which is now available in a choice of two capacities – a 1.8-litre with 122bhp and 142Nm of torque, and a 2.0-litre which produces 184bhp and 190Nm of torque. While the 1.8-litre engine is available in all specification grades, the 2.0litre is exclusively available in GR Sport grade. The fact that the new Corolla Hatchback is a selfcharging Hybrid, this effectively means that there will be no cost to the driver when operating in full
electric mode. With low annual road tax, low maintenance costs, and regenerative braking helping tyres and brakes last longer, the new Corolla Hatchback Hybrid is an excellent financial proposition in every respect. Additionally, there is no clutch to wear out due to the car’s standard electronically-controlled CVT (single-speed automatic) gearbox. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a Corolla Hybrid Hatchback (1.8-litre) in Luna Sport specification, and it looked stunning in bi-tone Pearl Red and Night Sky Black pearlescent paint. While all trim levels in the Corolla range come well

equipped, key Luna Sport features include 17” bi-tone black machined-face 10spoke alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, rear-view camera, black rear spoiler, full bi-tone exterior look (roof and door mirror casings), bi-beam LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, LED daytime running lights, power retractable and heated door mirrors, textured chrome interior inserts, ambient lighting, 8” Toyota Touch™ multimedia, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, an EV indicator, and a 7” TFT information screen, along with many other standard features. Also standard is ‘Toyota Safety Sense 2’, which consists of Forward Collision Warning, Pre-Crash Brake
Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Automatic High Beam, Road Sign Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Intelligent ACC, Lane Departure Alert (LDA), LDA with Steering Assist, and Lane Tracing Assist for ultimate peace of mind motoring. Capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 10.9seconds, the Corolla Hybrid Hatchback can reach a top speed of 180km/h, and can return a fuel consumption figure as low as 4.9litres/100km (up to 57.6mpg) – allowing for a range of up to 877km’s from the Corolla’s standard 43-litre fuel tank. DRIVING DYNAMICS The Corolla Hatchback
has excellent space in the front for two adults, while passengers in the rear are provided with good head, elbow and leg room too. Boot capacity in the 1.8litre Corolla Hybrid Hatchback measures in at a respectable 361-litres, while the capacity in its 2.0-litre sibling drops to 313-litres due to the Nickel Metal Hydride battery being located in the boot. The 1.8-litre model has a Lithium Ion battery which is smaller in size, resulting in a larger cargo capacity. My review car performed admirably well on a variety of road surfaces, with very little wind noise from around the door mirrors. At a steady motorway speed, the car’s
engine tone is hardly noticable at all, while excellent driving dynamics ensure that the car remains composed when faced with a series of twisty country roads too. The Corolla Hybrid Hatchback is an extremely easy car to get comfortable in, with all major controls situated within easy reach of the driver. Even the steering position has been designed to feel as natural as possible, helping drivers to avoid fatigue. PRICING & WARRANTY Pricing for the new Toyota Corolla Hybrid Hatchback starts at a very reasonable €26,390 (exdelivery), with my review car
specification priced from just €29,545 (ex-delivery). While all Toyota vehicles are built to exceptional standards, a 3-year/ 100,000km warranty comes as standard. However, Hybrid vehicles have fewer parts that require servicing, and those that do are inherently durable to extend service intervals. Hybrid components within the drivetrain system have a 5-year/100,000km warranty, while a Hybrid battery warranty of up to an incredible 15 years is available when the car is presented to an authorised Toyota Service agent for an Annual Hybrid Health Check.

he reinvented MG brand is now a value-focused, European market-friendly division of the mighty Chinese SAIC corporation, the group that bought the remnants of what was left of the old Rover Group. Having recently reviewed the impressive MG ZS fullyelectric SUV, it is now the turn of its Sportwagon sibling, the MG5 EV to take centre stage. IMPRESSIVE POWER The MG5 is powered by a 52.5kWh Lithium-ion battery which delivers 156bhp and 260Nm of instant torque, with just 7.7-seconds needed to hit 100km/h from a standing start. The battery is mounted centrally under the floor in a manner that gives a low centre of gravity, and this offsets the inevitable downside of the EV powertrain’s extra weight. As a result, MG claims very similar handling characteristics to a conventionally-powered car. The MG5 has been designed with smart features to make the most of your range. There are three levels of regenerative braking to increase efficiency and optimise battery charge, and with Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes, the car can easily adapt to every journey and every driving style.
EXCELLENT CABIN & CARGO SPACE The MG5 EV can accommodate up to 5 passengers comfortably, while the boot has ample room for everyone’s luggage. Cargo space comprises of 464-litres from boot floor to load cover, 578litres from floor to roof with the load cover retracted, and an impressive 1,456litres when the 60:40 splitfolding rear seats are dropped. With the rear seat backs in place, there is plenty of head and legroom on offer – even behind a taller-than-average driver. In the front you can get comfortable with the sixway adjustable driver’s seat, and four-way adjustable passenger seat, with the steering wheel offering plenty of adjustment too. TECH & CHARGING OPTIONS Advanced MG Pilot driver
assistance technology provides the added confidence of state-of-theart warning and alert systems. It includes Adaptive Cruise Control to maintain a safe distance from the car in front, as well as Active Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, and Intelligent High Beam Assist that automatically dips the headlights when an oncoming vehicle is detected. When it comes to powering up the MG5 EV there are easy-charge options available. A 10% to 80% charge can be completed in under 40 minutes when using a 100kW CCS rapid charger, or 50 minutes from a 50kW rapid charger. However, most buyers will possibly opt to charge their car at home, and this can be done via a domestic wall box charger in 8 hours and 30 minutes (from 0% to 100%). A clever design element of the front grille of the MG5 is that the centre section behind the MG badge opens to reveal the charging points, enabling the car to be driven straight into a
charging bay.
IMPRESSIVE SPECIFICATION Full LED headlights, and Auto headlights with high beam assist are standard across the range. Standard safety features also include rear parking sensors, blind spot intervention, traffic sign recognition, Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, and Intelligent Forward Emergency Braking (Pedestrian & Cyclist Recognition, Junction Assist) and Rear Automatic Cross Traffic Alert and Braking. Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto come as standard from the SV grade upwards, while a Wireless Phone Charger is introduced at the SV Premium grade. The 8” Infotainment display in the SV grade increases to 9” in the SV Premium and SVE Xtronic grades, including higher resolution and Nissan Connected Services. The top of the range SVE Xtronic includes 19” alloy wheels, Nappa Quilted Leather seats, a handsfree powered tailgate, heated
front seats with massage function, ProPilot with Navi Link, a Heads Up Display (HUD), Automatic Tilt Reversing Mirrors and a Bose sound system with 10 speakers.
GENEROUSLY-EQUIPPED TRIM LEVELS There are two trim levels on offer – Excite and Exclusive – both of which come with the same battery range. A fully-charged battery can provide up to 345km on a WLTP combined driving cycle, or up to 445km on a WLTP city test cycle. Upgrading to the Exclusive trim adds keyless entry with push-button start, leather style perforated upholstery, heated front seats, electric driver’s 6-way adjustable seat, driver’s seat lumber adjustment, auto airconditioning with odour filter, electric windows with one-touch operation, heated electrically-adjustable folding door mirrors, rain sensing wipers and silver roof rails. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was an MG5 EV Exclusive, which looked stylish in its aptlynamed Electric Blue metallic paintwork (one of 5 colours available). With instant acceleration from the frontmounted electric motor, the car performs admirably – especially in Sport mode, where the throttle response is exquisite. Top speed is electronically-limited to 185km/h (way past the legal
speed limit), and overall driving dynamics are impressive. The car is also supremely easy to handle, with a claimed 11.3m turning circle. Visibility is excellent, while parking is made easy thanks to the rear-view camera and parking sensors. The MG5 EV certainly makes you forget that you are driving a long vehicle (4,544mm overall length), as I found that it drives like a spacious hatchback instead. This, in part, is due to the vehicle’s ride height, where unlike an SUV, it doesn’t sit too high from the road.
