UPDATED ŠKODA KAROQ HAS LOTS TO OFFER T
he original Škoda Karoq was launched in 2017 as a replacement for the funky Škoda Yeti crossover, and it slots in between the smaller Kamiq and larger Kodiaq in Škoda’s impressive SUV line-up. The Karoq is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform, and is a sister model to the SEAT Ateca, sharing its chassis, roof stamping and side doors. The name Karoq is derived from the Aleutian language, spoken by the native inhabitants of the Alaskan island Kodiak. It is a combination of Aleutian words "kaa'raq" and "ruq", a car and an arrow, which are the elements of the Škoda logo.

MID-LIFE FACELIFT The Karoq has been a consistent sales success for the Škoda brand, so it is understandable that the Czech car manufacturer hasn’t tweaked the formula much with this midlife facelift. There are some subtle

cosmetic changes, such as new LED matrix headlamps, a rear light design which echoes that of the larger Kodiaq, a wider front grille and reprofiled bumpers. However, the changes aren’t purely cosmetic, as they are designed to bring an

aerodynamic benefit too. A combination of smooth underbody cladding, an extended rear spoiler and aero covers for the alloy wheels have improved aerodynamic efficiency by nine per cent, and this result in an improvement in fuel consumption
– especially at motorway speeds. THREE TRIM OPTIONS The new Karoq is available in a choice of three trim levels – Ambition, Style and rangetopping Sportline. Key standard equipment across all trim levels include multiple airbags, e-Call emergency call system, Climatronic dual-zone airconditioning, rear parking sensors, cruise control with speed limiter, keyless start/stop, 8” digital display, 8” touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth, Smartlink (Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility), 17” alloy wheels, LED headlights Continued on page 2

including daytime running lights, LED tail lights including dynamic indicators, rear privacy glass, and a split-folding rear seat with an integrated armrest. The Style trim builds on the comprehensive Ambition trim with a further emphasis on elegance, technology and design. With sharp, sleek details both inside and out, the special edition Sportline trim is distinctive from every angle. Packed with exclusive styling, the Sportline exterior styling pack consists of front and rear sports bumpers, black exterior mirrors and front grille surround, and black roof rails for a distinctive sporty look. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION OPTIONS The Karoq is available with four engines – evenly split between petrol and diesel. The entry-level petrol engine is a 1.0-
litre TSI with 110bhp and is available only in six-speed manual guise, while a 1.5-litre TSI with 150bhp is also available, and can be specified with either a manual or automatic (sevenspeed) DSG transmission. Diesel power options consist of a pair of 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (TDI) units with 115bhp or 150bhp, both of which are available with manual or automatic transmissions. However, when specified with an automatic transmission, the higher powered diesel engine also attracts an allwheel drive drivetrain. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a Karoq Sportline 2.0-litre TDI 115bhp DSG (automatic), which attracted lots of positive attention in its distinctive Phoenix Orange exclusive metallic paintwork with contrasting 18” Procyon Black alloy wheels.
contd from page 1
The refined and punchy fourcylinder TDI engine produces 115bhp and 300Nm of torque, and enables the car to sprint from 0-100km/h in 11.0-seconds, with fuel consumption as low as 4.9l/100km (57.6mpg) on a WLTP combined driving cycle. Sitting on the tried-and-tested MQB platform, the updated Karoq doesn’t feel any different to the original when it comes to ride and handling, and that is no bad thing. The Karoq’s agile suspension does an excellent job of absorbing road imperfections with ease, with passengers well insulated from road and tyre noise when on the move. The Karoq feels agile on twisty back roads, and there is a surprisingly small amount of body roll in corners, while light steering provides the driver with excellent levels of feedback at all times. The Karoq makes long distance
motorway journey’s enjoyable too, and the slick DSG transmission really adds greatly to its overall drivability. Step into the cabin of the new Karoq and it is clear to see that the basic layout is the same as before, but there are new interior trims to subtly set it apart from its predecessor. A new two-spoke steering wheel is similar to that found in the Škoda Octavia and it provides the Karoq with a modern and upmarket look and feel. As ever, the Karoq boasts a good number of well thought-out touches as part of Škoda’s Simply Clever approach to interior design. The front door pockets can hold a 1.5-litre bottle and have little elastic straps to hold items in place, and there is even space for a little clip-on waste bin too. In standard five-seat layout, the Karoq’s 521-litre boot offers
terrific practicality, but the rear seat backs can be folded to reveal 1,605-litres of space when called upon. Passenger space is just as good as before, with a fair level of head and legroom on offer for all occupants, while doors that open wide enable easy access in and out of the high quality cabin.
PRICING & WARRANTY The revised Škoda Karoq compact SUV continues to rank among the very best when it comes to practicality, comfort, fuel efficiency, and value for money. Pricing starts at just €34,900 and a comprehensive 3-Year/150,000km warranty comes as standard.
LEAKS ON YOUR DRIVEWAY...What You Need To Know BROWN/BLACK – ENGINE OIL If it’s a brown or black stain on the driveway it’s almost certainly engine oil. It is probably coming from a seal or gasket that needs to be replaced or tightened. Firstly, clean the engine to establish where the drip is coming from, and then decide if it’s something you can tackle yourself or if this is one for the garage. Don’t ignore it, and keep a close eye on the level of oil on the dipstick. A seized engine can easily result from an engine running without enough oil. RED – POWER STEERING FLUID If your oil leak is cherry red it’s a leak in the power steering system. Now is the time to talk to your mechanic as driving the car can result in more damage and even the loss of power steering! MULTI-COLOURED – FUEL LEAK If a rainbow colour is appearing under your car it looks like your fuel system is leaking. Apart from the Administration/Trade Ads:

risk of fire you are also losing expensive fuel so get this to a mechanic straight away.
CLEAR – WATER Of all the things you see this is the one least likely to cause you problems. Typically it’s condensation from the air conditioning unit or even screen washer spilling.
GREEN/YELLOW – COOLANT A tell tale sign that your radiator is in trouble is the arrival of green liquid under the car. That could be something as simple as a radiator cap that hasn’t been replaced properly or a clip that needs to be
So, take a look under your car and make sure that you don’t have a problem drip!

New Suzuki Swace Hybrid – Dynamic Efficiency
By DECLAN GLYNN www.motoringmatters.ie
T
he new Suzuki Swace may look very familiar to readers, and there is a very good reason for that. The Swace is supplied to Suzuki by Toyota Motor Corporation under a collaborative business agreement between the two companies. Based on the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Estate platform with signature design changes, and is manufactured in the UK with exports to Europe. Whereas the Corolla is available as an estate, saloon and hatchback, the Swace is only available as an estate.
DESIGNED TO STAND OUT Designed with a low centre of gravity, the Swace stands out with its wide stance and powerful rearward-flowing body lines, matched to a sporty front face with parabola LED projector headlamps. The large grille opening, and strong fog lamp bezels are inherited from Suzuki’s signature sporty design, which together with the front bumper positioned low to the ground creates an overall impression of stability. The grille mesh and fog lamp garnish both feature a honeycomb pattern with a painted black finish to further accentuate its sporty feel. Further exterior features include integrated roof rails for simple roof carrier mounting, a sculpted tailgate door that is
constructed in lightweight resin to enhance fuel efficiency, and sporty 16inch alloy wheels. PROVEN HYBRID TECHNOLOGY Powering the Suzuki Swace is Toyota’s 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid system. This combines a 102bhp four-cylinder petrol engine with a 53bhp electric motor, which feeds power to the front wheels through a CVT automatic transmission, although the Swace can also drive on EV power alone for short distances. Available only in SZ-T trim, the Swace gets a high level of standard specification as standard. Key features include seven airbags, dual-zone climate control, a seven-inch LCD colour information screen, heated front seats, heated steering wheel,
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto device connectivity, rear parking camera, and an eight-inch centre-dash touchscreen. The Swace is also equipped with three drive modes – Normal, Eco or Sport – so drivers can select a drive mode to suit their individual driving style or mood. In terms of safety, the Swace is equipped with numerous advanced safety features for complete peace of mind for both the driver and passengers on every journey. Advanced driver assist
functions include Brake Hold, Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Automatic High-Beam (AHB) and eCall to alert the emergency services in the event of a traffic accident. SPACIOUS CABIN & BOOT The cabin in the Swace is very similar in its design and layout to that found in the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Estate, and it certainly feels like it has been built with long-lasting solidity in mind. Interior space is
admirable, with lots of head, elbow and leg room on offer for all but the tallest of passengers. With 596-litres of cargo space available behind the rear seats, there should be ample space for a wide array of family belongings, leisure equipment or workrelated items, but this space can be more than doubled to 1,232-litres when the rear seats are folded flat. Additionally, you can store the rear parcel shelf under the false boot floor and a mountain bike fits easily once you fold the seats.
The luggage compartment is equipped with auto-illuminating lights and a DC 12V accessory socket for added convenience. DIESEL-RIVALLING FUEL EFFICIENCY Producing a combined output of 122bhp and 142Nm of torque, the hybrid system in the Suzuki Swace provides instant shove from the electric motor assisting the engine, and it feels sprightly enough from a standing start, and when overtaking too. The system charges itself, balancing between petrol and electric to give the maximum possible efficiency. Official fuel consumption figures are quoted as 4.4l/100km (64.2mpg) on a WLTP combined driving cycle, and I achieved 4.7l/100km on a combination of urban and rural roads, along with some motorway journeys too. That is a match for an equivalent diesel engine, which is very good indeed.
Leveraging its high output motor and large battery capacity, the Swace is equipped with an EV drive mode function. In EV drive mode, the vehicle is driven solely by its electric motor with power supplied from the battery. This mode can be used for driving short distances without having to worry about noise or emissions, especially in residential areas early in the morning and late at night, or in garages and indoor parking lots. VERDICT & PRICING Overall, the new Suzuki Swace is a very commendable car in every respect. It is comfortable and refined in equal measure, and it feels very well constructed throughout. The smooth and efficient hybrid powertrain in the new Swace is a major good news story too. The new Suzuki Swace is priced at just €30,995 and is on sale now at Suzuki dealerships nationwide.
DID YOU KNOW? Suzuki workers take 2545 steps to
complete every car. The car making process for workers involves 2545 steps, which is an improvement on the previous 3077 steps that were in place until 2014. The reduction came after a string of fatigue initiatives.

BUIL LT T FOR A BETTER WORLD
34% of people have or would switch to an electric vehicle due to rising fuel costs
A
recent survey by the Automobile Association in Ireland shows that 34% of motorists have, or would, switch to an electric vehicle due to rising fuel costs. The poll of over 4,200 motorists also reveals that 33% are likely or have already switched to an EV due to climate change, 14% said it would be a ‘personal choice’ and 9% said an EV would be ‘suitable’ for their ‘driving needs’. When asked why people would be hesitant to switch to an electric vehicle, 57% said it was due to a lack of, or, insufficient charging
infrastructure, 45% said it was due to range anxiety or technological uncertainty and 58% said it would be due to cost. 21% said there is a lack of information about these vehicles, while 17% said there is limited availability and choice of models. Meanwhile, 52% said the Government’s target of having 1 million vehicles on the road by 2030 is ‘not achievable’, while 30% said it ‘might be’. The AA survey also asked respondents what type of vehicle they would choose if they were to purchase another or a different one in the next year; 49% said hybrid, 15% said
petrol, 19% said diesel and 14% said a battery electric vehicle (BEV). “Our survey does highlight that there appears to be a greater urgency on the part of the car buying public to move to electric or partially electric vehicles, with this accelerated by ever rising fuel costs. It’s more than 40% more expensive to fill an average petrol car for the year now and with a greater range of electric vehicles on sale now, with 57 different fully electric models now on sale from 27 brands, there is now a very healthy choice,” said AA Ireland Head of Communications, Paddy Comyn.

Car rental tips when on holidays IN ASSOCIATION WITH

enting a car while holidaying abroad is proving to be quite expensive this year. You not only have extra rental and insurance costs, but now you have record high fuel prices to contend with too. With prices at the forecourts unlikely to come down any time soon, you might be wondering how you can save some money. Well fear not, because we have rounded up our top car rental tips when on holidays. PLAN IN ADVANCE Our first piece of advice is to plan your holiday well in advance! It is a known fact that prices rise when holidays or car rentals are left to the last minute. Renting a car is in high demand across Europe this summer, so to ensure you actually get a car and to ensure you get it for a good price, book your spot in advance. This will make sure the dealer is aware and you have a good trip! Win, win. BOOK LOCALLY Think you’re better off going with big rental companies? Think again. Small rental companies often provide cheaper prices, so booking locally is a great way to go. We always give the advice to shop around where you see fit, but at the same time don’t book with a brand or company you have never heard of. One top car rental tip when on holiday is to not book with airport hire companies. Cars are in demand there, so prices will soar. Think cost over convenience. INSURANCE What about insurance? Our tip is to buy from a third-party insurer rather than from the rental firm, which will prove to be more expensive. Why not check out AA Insurance and get a quote today.
CHECK THE CAR BEFORE YOU DRIVE AWAY This is to ensure you don’t get blamed for any damage you didn’t cause. Before you leave the car park, check the car thoroughly and make note of any existing issues like scratches or dents on the wing mirrors, doors and the bonnet and take a photograph of these. Write down the damage and get both parties to sign, including the dealer. HIGH FUEL COSTS WHILE ABROAD Find out how you’re going to pay for fuel when on holidays. There are usually two ways you can pay for fuel in a hired car; fullto-empty or a full-to-full policy. The full-to-empty policy might seem straight-forward, but remember you are paying for the rental firm’s costs. They fill up the tank and you pay, meaning they could be purchasing the most expensive fuel on the market. And what happens if you don’t use the full tank? That will also cost you money. The full-to-full policy means you can choose where you purchase your fuel, ultimately opting for a cheaper option on the market and if you don’t use the full tank, you will only have to fill up what you used. It’s also important to shop around for fuel while on holidays, and drive efficiently. Right are the AA’s top fuel saving tips.
How to improve your fuel efficiency There are lots of things you can do as a driver to reduce your fuel consumption – and lighten the load on your wallet! ACCELERATE GENTLY harder and uses more fuel (you The harder you accelerate, the can tell by keeping an eye on more fuel you use. Laois recently, I can honestly say that it is now a contender for class honours in every respect – and in a market segment crammed full of talented rivals, it is testament to the fact that Opel’s design and engineering teams have created an outstanding family hatchback that can wear its ‘Made in Germany’ tag with pride. I am looking forward to spending a week behind the wheel of the all-new Opel Astra in the weeks ahead, and I will publish my full road test review then. A slick Sports Tourer version will join the hatchback in Ireland in 2023.

MOTOR ACCIDENTS By LORIN MURPHY
AVIVA MOTOR SERVICES MANAGER AVIVA INSURANCE IRELAND DAC
G
iven that motor accidents are not planned, as a driver you may not always be prepared to deal with the circumstances immediately after having been involved in an accident. The following are some simple guidelines to help you if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a minor motor accident with no injuries. However, if the accident is more serious and yourself or others involved are injured, you should call the emergency services immediately and follow their instructions as to what to do.
If you find yourself involved in a minor car accident, the following is a guide to the steps you should take next. You are legally required to stop at the scene of the accident and take steps to proper care for yourself and others involved – so pull in as soon as it’s safe to do so. Once you have done this, take a few deep breaths and try to settle your nerves; no matter how small the accident, it’s still going to be a bit of a shock. Take time to help steady yourself and get over the initial shock. Once the car is stopped, make sure to turn the vehicle off, apply your handbrake and turn on your hazard lights. Before leaving your car make sure it is safe to do so, do not put yourself or your passengers in danger exiting your vehicle while other vehicles may be approaching. CHECK FOR INJURIES If you or any of your passengers are injured, make sure to phone the emergency services (999) straight away and follow their instructions carefully. If there was another vehicle
involved make sure the other driver or their passengers are not injured, and if there are injuries, call the emergency services. CALL THE GARDAÍ It’s important to contact the authorities in the event of an accident; even if they don’t attend, they’ll be the ones to create an official report. While the Gardaí may decide on whether to attend depending on the severity of the incident, it’s vital you request their presence if you believe the other driver is not in a fit state to drive, is unable to provide insurance or license details or if they leave the scene. The Gardaí will also provide a recorded incident number as proof that the incident was reported. Get the name and number of the Garda that attended at the scene. If you have a high vis jacket, be sure to put in on and try mark the scene if it is safe to do so, this helps other road users become aware of the accident.
note of that just in case any discrepancies arise following the incident. There’s lots more information you should try to record which could become very important when making a claim to your insurance company. These include the date and time of the accident; the weather conditions at the time of the incident; the make, model and registration of all cars involved; details of any injuries; details of witnesses to the accident; notes on the damage caused to each car; and the position of the cars following the accident. Some of these are easily recorded in photographs – so if
you’ve got your camera phone handy, and it is safe to do so, take photos from multiple angles that show the cars involved, and any damage. Make some notes as well of the damage sustained to the vehicles and where the damage is on each vehicle. BE MINDFUL OF WHAT YOU SAY Assuming responsibility for the accident could land you in hot water, and even a simple apology could become an issue when it comes to making a claim. As strange as it may seem, avoid discussing the accident at the scene. If there isn’t another party

involved – for instance, if you’ve hit a parked car – then you have a responsibility to leave your contact details and insurers’ information for the owner to find; a note underneath the windscreen wiper is one common solution. Again, take the time to record the damage and other details you may need going forward and contact the Gardaí to report the incident. CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY You should contact your insurance company and advise them of the accident as soon as
possible, even if you do not intend to make a claim. It is good to have your policy number and registration number to hand before making the call – This is all on your insurance disc displayed on your windscreen. Each insurance company will have their own notification process. They will look for information such as your policy number, your name and address and your car registration number, the registrations of the other car(s) involved, the name and contact details of the other driver and passengers or witnesses, the other driver’s insurance details and any photos you took at the scene. Hopefully you will never have an accident, and the above is a general guide on what to do. A useful tip is to look up your insurance companies’ guidelines on what to do if you have an accident. These are mostly captured on their websites or policy booklets and are full of useful tips and contact numbers. Drive safely!

NEW VOLKSWAGEN ID.5 FIRST DRIVE REVIEW
By DECLAN GLYNN – www.motoringmatters.ie
E
legant and dynamic design, outstanding aerodynamics, extensive range. The new ID.5 and the sporty ID.5 GTX with dual-motor all-wheel drive are the new, longrange top models in the ID. family. Like all ID. models, Volkswagen’s first e-SUV coupé is based on the Volkswagen modular electric drive matrix (MEB). The new software generation 3.0 allows for over-the-air updates and activation of additional functions, so that the ID.5 can stay up-to-date for a long time. Innovative assistance systems such as Travel Assist with swarm data allow for an even more relaxed and predictive driving experience. The new optional Park Assist Plus with memory function will take care of personalised parking processes on request. STANDARD LONG-RANGE BATTERY At 4599 mm long (ID.5 GTX: 4582 mm), the e-SUV coupé from Volkswagen strikes quite a pose on the road. The ID.5 is powered by an electric engine in the rear, while the dual-motor all-wheel drive of the ID.5 GTX is powered by an e-motor on the front and rear axles. All ID.5 engine types are powered by a large, long-
range battery. A low drag coefficient of 0.26 (or 0.27 in the ID.5 GTX) increases efficiency and boosts the vehicle’s extensive range. This capability is further supported by the integrated spoiler in the wide-opening, aerodynamically shaped tailgate. Electric cooling air vents in the front of the vehicle open only when necessary, so as to ensure optimal air flow.
The new Volkswagen e-SUV coupé projects independence and uniqueness from every angle. The characteristic LED technology, with light strips on the front (optional) and rear, unmistakably identifies the ID.5 as a member of the ID. family. Many features – including the striking bumper, painted door panelling and new roof line – set the e-SUV coupé apart from the ID.4, which
was named World Car of the Year. The expressive coupé design has a high recognition value. Its large air inlet and IQ.Light LED matrix headlights with intelligent high beams and 3D LED rear lights as standard give the ID.5 GTX an even more dynamic appearance. The Vehicle Dynamics Manager networks the drive and chassis control systems, while an optional adaptive DCC chassis ensures optimal driving dynamics. The ID.5 and ID.5 GTX coast in driving mode D and recuperate energy in mode B. SPACIOUS CABIN & BOOT The new body style and lounge-like spatial concept highlight the innovative power of Volkswagen and its ID. family. Despite its coupétype shape, the ID.5 has just 12 mm less headroom in the back than the Volkswagen ID.4. The long 2766 mm
wheelbase facilitates interior spatial conditions comparable to those of SUVs in higher vehicle classes. The luggage compartment volume is 549 litres, and the materials and manufacturing of the vehicle are of premium quality. The ultra-modern digital cockpit offers a new operating concept. The driver display and highresolution multimedia system deliver strikingly brilliant visuals. An innovative augmented reality head-up display (optional) within the driver’s field of vision presents additional information. The new ID. software 3.0 features various improvements including natural voice control. With Car2X communication, Volkswagen is taking safety to a whole new level. Data from compatible vehicles in the Volkswagen fleet and signals from infrastructure

within a radius of up to 800 metres can be locally interpreted in a fraction of a second, enabling driver alerts about dangerous areas, accidents and stationary traffic. The ID. Light in the cockpit helps by providing visual warnings. MULTIPLE TRIM OPTIONS The new Volkswagen ID.5 is available in a choice of 6 trim levels – Business, Family, Tech and Max in twowheel drive guise, and GTX Business and GTX Max in allwheel drive format. Depending on the trim chosen, a WLTP driving range of up to 513kms is possible (up to 494kms in all-wheel drive models). Two-wheel drive editions of the ID.5 produce 174bhp and can complete a 0100km/h sprint in 10.4seconds, while all-wheel drive GTX models produce 299bhp and can reach 100km/h from a standing start in just 6.3-seconds.
WELL-ROUNDED COUPÉSUV At a recent Irish Media launch event for the new Volkswagen ID.5 I drove a GTX Max version on a mixture of motorway and back roads, and the overall performance and refinement on offer was amazing. The ID.5 Coupé-SUV inherits all of the outstanding aspects of the ID.4, and this results in a well-rounded SUV that benefits from a sportier silhouette without compromising on rear seat space or comfort. The ID.5 is available to order now at Volkswagen dealerships nationwide, with pricing starting at €59,995.

Electric Vehicle It has just been announced that proof of EV ownership is no longer needed to avail of the home charger grant. This means that a whole range of applicants are now eligible for support from this grant including people with company vans parked at their home, e-motorbike owners, and people who wish to buy an EV charger for a second home.
I
n the last article, the Sustainable Authority of Ireland (SEAI) gave you all the information you need to know about why you should drive electric and what incentives are available if you are looking to buy an electric vehicle (EV). This time we are focusing on charging.
Rapidly evolving battery technology means EVs have higher battery capacity and higher driving range. Most new electric vehicles have over 300km range with some tipping the 500km mark. The vast majority of drivers in Ireland only drive 50km per day so an electric vehicle will suit them, only needing to charge the car twice or three times a week. Experience shows that most charging happens overnight at home, when it’s cheapest. Most drivers only use public charging points for quick top-ups to complete a journey.
Charging at home is the simplest, most convenient and costeffective way to go. This is how we expect most charging will be done. With a home charger, you charge your car overnight. You’re then ready with a full charge for your journey the next day. For longer journeys, there is a growing network of 1,300 public charge points and destination charging at shopping centres, workplaces, hotels, gyms and airports. Plug in with your car’s charging cable, activate the charge point and let the car to do the rest.
CHARGING YOUR ELECTRIC VEHICLE To charge an electric vehicle you connect the car to a charge point using a charging cable.
WHAT SUPPORTS ARE THERE TO INSTALL A CHARGER? It has just been announced that proof of EV ownership is no longer needed to avail of the
home charger grant. This means that a whole range of applicants are now eligible for support from this grant including people with company vans parked at their home, e-motorbike owners, and people who wish to buy an EV charger for a second home. From September, all chargers bought under the grant must be smart chargers. At the moment, most grant applicants opt for smart chargers due to benefits they provide. These chargers can send and receive signals meaning they adjust the EV charging power depending on supply. In the future, this will allow us to coordinate the charging of all of our EVs to match the available wind power, in particular at night or the local solar power which the owners home produces itself. SEAI’s grant programmes will now form part of the Government’s new Zero Emission Vehicle Ireland (ZEVI) group which was launched on 21st July. ZEVI has published a strategy on the development of Ireland’s EV charging infrastructure and will be responsible for ensuring all charging infrastructure, including fast charging, receives appropriate support and investment to meet our 2030 target.

World premiere of new Amarok V
olkswagen Commercial Vehicles presents the new Amarok. The onand off-road all-rounder has been designed and conceived in Germany and Australia; it is being produced in South Africa. A premium pick-up for Australia and New Zealand, numerous countries of Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Its set of features, over 20 new driver assist systems, mobile online services, engines that are both efficient and high- torque, two all-wheel drive technologies, tailor-made accessories and clear Volkswagen design DNA make the new Amarok one of the most versatile and wellbalanced pick-ups in the world. The premium pick-up will come onto the market in the first few countries from the end of the year.
The new Amarok is being launched in Ireland as a fourdoor double cab (DoubleCab). In silhouette the wheel arches, which are half-round as before, are especially striking on both versions.
Amarok, which will have allwheel drive as standard in many markets, are also enhanced by much greater fording depth for driving through watery terrain. Previously it was 500 mm, now it’s 800 mm.
LONG WHEELBASE ENHANCES PROPORTIONS AND OFF-ROAD QUALITIES At 5,350 millimetres, the new Amarok is 96 mm longer than its predecessor. A wheel-base of 3,270 mm represents an increase of 173 mm. That provides more room, especially on the double cab’s second row of seats. The wheelbase has thus grown much more than the total length. And that shortens the body overhangs. The result: sharper proportions and improved off-road capability thanks to better approach angles. The off-road capabilities of the
HIGH-QUALITY INTERIOR With its self-explanatory and digital displays, the interior has been configured by the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design team in a very functional and high-quality way. The spectrum of display units is made up of digital 8.0-inch instruments (‘Digital Cockpit’, fully digital and 12.0-inch in size on the Style and above and a highly modern touchscreen in tablet format (10.0-inch in size; on the Style and above 12.0-inch as standard for the infotainment system. Volkswagen Commercial
Vehicles has implemented a mix of digital functions and ergonomically configured buttons and/or push/rotary switches in the Amarok that are intuitive to use. The infotainment system’s volume and all-wheel drive system’s settings are, for instance, controlled via such hard keys. Dependent on specification, these both robust and premium-looking features are framed in aluminium. AMPLE CARGO BOX PAYLOAD It is also strikingly spacious
behind the double cab: in what is known as the cargo box. As was the case on the predecessor model, the cargo bed between the wheel arches has enough room for a Euro pallet loaded in sideways. The load is strapped down via eye rings on the cargo bed, which can each take a load of up to 500 kilograms. In line with this high load capability, the maximum payload has gone up from a good tonne to now 1.16 tonnes. The cargo box can also be secured using an electrically operated roll cover. This roll cover
can be opened and closed from the cargo box itself, from in-side the vehicle or by remote control via the vehicle key. TAILOR-MADE FOR IRISH DRIVERS The new Amarok is set to become the market leading pickup on the Irish market when it launches in Q2, 2023. The previous version commanded a 20% segment share here but Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland is confident it can exceed that when the new Amarok launches in 2023
ROAD SAFETY ALERT
– HEAVY RAIN W
hen it comes to Irish weather there is always a downpour on the way. There are some simple steps motorists can take to make sure they don’t end up in trouble The RSA has the following advice for road users: When driving in wet conditions, drivers are reminded that; • It takes longer to stop a vehicle on wet roads so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front, 4 seconds at a minimum (use the 2 second rule and repeat it twice) • Take special care when driving behind goods vehicles as they generate a considerable amount of spray which reduces your visibility • Allow extra space between you and vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians, horse and riders and motorcyclists as they may need to avoid area on the road • Be aware of the danger of aquaplaning especially on roads with speed limits of 100 km/h and 120 km/h • Check tyres and consider replacing them if the thread
depth is below 3mm. • Use dipped headlights at all times of poor visibility to ensure you are seen by other motorists With added risks posed by wet or flooded roads the RSA has the following advice; • If the road ahead is flooded choose another route, do not attempt to drive through it. Flooded roads that appear shallow could be deeper than you think • After going through water, drive slowly with your foot on the brake pedal for a short distance - this helps to dry the brakes • Road users should always follow recommended routes and obey signs closing roads to traffic • Watch out for washed out roads, earth slides, broken water or sewer mains, loose or downed electrical wires, and fallen or falling objects
JAGUAR moves from a 3- to 5-year warranty J
aguar is launching a new fiveyear warranty across its entire vehicle range, including the allelectric Jaguar I-PACE and all mild or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This decision means that Jaguar is the first luxury-car company to extend its warranty period beyond the industrystandard three years. For five years, or 150,000km, whichever comes first, Jaguar will repair or replace manufacturing defects according to the warranty regulations in material or workmanship, completely free of charge. And with the smart combination of InControl Remote, which optimises breakdown assistance and includes automatic emergency calls and the 26 MotorMarket
ability to remotely interact with your vehicle from anywhere, it makes life easier when it really counts. A modern luxury product offering, and customer experience is at the core of Jaguar Land Rover’s Reimagine strategy. The introduction of a 5-year warranty for all new Jaguars represents an important step towards excellence in service experience, providing Jaguar customers enhanced peace of mind throughout their ownership. Jaguar’s comprehensive Warranty means five years of freedom and reassurance for owner-drivers, fleets and private users alike. It offers transparency in servicing and running costs and further solidifies the value proposition what is already a compelling
product line-up. Jaguar expect the new five-year warranty to have a positive impact on the residual value of every vehicle in the range. This spells good news for customers as strong residual values ultimately translate into lower monthly lease rates. Eddie Kavanagh, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Ireland said: “The prolonged new car warranty shows the confidence in quality and reliability in Jaguar Cars and has the potential to uplift Jaguar’s RVs by up to 2%. Moreover, there will be customer benefits in assurance of cost certainty and predictability through reduced follow up cost because all or at least most of the potential parts are covered”.

LEGEND
Rosemary Smith Inducted into the FIVA Heritage Hall of Fame L
ast year, FIVA (The International Federation of Historic Vehicles) launched its Heritage Hall of Fame to celebrate world famous figures and unsung heroes in automotive history. FIVA clubs around the world were invited to nominate their motoring heroes. Peadar Ward from the Irish Veteran and Vintage Car Club (IVVCC) nominated Rosemary Smith outlining Rosemary’s motor sport achievements. The primary criterion was that they chose a man or woman who have made significant contributions to the automotive heritage, regardless of whether these individuals were household names or relatively unknown. A prestigious international panel of judges (Jay Leno (USA); Alberto Lenz (Mexico); Nick Mason (United Kingdom); Shiro Nakamura (Japan); Gaby von Oppenheim (Germany); Patrick Rollet (France); Navaz Bhathena Sandhu (India); Eli Solomon (Singapore) and Tiddo Bresters (The Netherlands) – as FIVA’s acting president) selected the final nine inductees, of which Rosemary was one. Rosemary competed in some of the most iconic rallies around the world, taking home many trophies despite many people looking to hold her back in the notoriously male-dominated sport. A particularly poignant victory was the famous Tulip Rally, which she won in 1965, beating all the male drivers to the finish, an achievement which made not only the motorsport world take notice but also Hollywood, with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton sending her a huge bouquet and congratulatory letter. Rosemary also drove in the Monte Carlo rally eight times, the London to Sydney Marathon Rally (12,000 miles) and London to Mexico Marathon Rally (17,000 miles) and finished and won in both of them. She also raced in the Super Saloons in England for three years, having been told that any idiot could drive in a
33 MotorMarket
rally, but a really good driver was a racing driver. After years competing and winning at the highest level in world rallying, Rosemary set up her own driving school, using Renault Clios and campaigned for young driver education to be introduced in schools across the country. Despite those achievements, Rosemary had never had the chance to take part in what is arguably the greatest motorsport experience, driving an 800bhp F1 car. That was until 2017 when she was invited by Renault to do a test drive on the renowned Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, southern France, making her the oldest person, at 79, to drive a F1 car. Speaking of the experience Rosemary said: “Driving an 800bhp car is something I, like many other racers, have always dreamt of but I didn’t think I’d ever have the opportunity to do it, so when the Renault Sport Formula One™ Team contacted me I jumped at the chance. It was definitely very different to the rally cars I’m used to but it was an amazing experience. I could feel myself getting more and more comfortable with the car and being able to speak to Jolyon, driver to driver, also helped when the nerves did kick in. “After racing and facing the challenges of competing in a male-dominated sport together for many years I was so happy that my friend Pauline was able to share this latest milestone and give me that extra boost. It just goes to show that anyone can fulfil their dreams at any age if they put their mind to it and always follow their passions.” Rosemary initially trained as a dress designer and opened her own dress shop, which unexpectedly became her route into the world of motorsport when one of her clients invited her to navigate in a rally. After deciding navigating was not for her, she switched to driving. She came to the attention of the Rootes Group’s Competition department who offered her a works drive and the silverware soon followed. Congratulations Rosemary.
NEW OPEL GRANDLAND SUV FIRST DRIVE REVIEW
The Opel Grandland X launched in 2017 as the firm's third SUV, joining the smaller Crossland X and Mokka X models in the brand's expansive range. It was the first car to launch following PSA Peugeot-Citroen's significant Opel-Vauxhall takeover, sharing its platform with the big-selling Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs. As with the new Crossland and Mokka, the Grandland has dropped the ‘X’ from its name in order to simplify the brand’s naming policy. The new Grandland SUV promises to build on the strengths of the original model with a sharp new design, enhanced equipment levels and a greater driving experience than ever before. With Opel now part of the recently-formed Stellantis automotive manufacturing corporation, the new Grandland is tasked with leading the way through technological innovation. NEW OPEL VIZOR BRAND IDENTITY Elegantly sporty, and proudly displaying the new signature Opel Vizor brand face, the new Grandland boasts class-leading technology features and a fully digital Pure Panel, with intuitive controls. Designed and produced in Germany, and available in petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid four-wheel drive variants, the new Grandland is sure to appeal to families looking for an upmarket, spacious, and practical fiveseat SUV. From first glance it is clear to see that the new Opel Vizor sharpens the looks of the front, and seamlessly integrates the grille, the Opel Blitz emblem and the technologies hidden behind the panel, with the Grandland name and the Blitz brand logo standing proudly in the middle of the tailgate. Further accents are set by the bumpers and side panels, now painted in body colour, as well as the
underbody skid-plates in high-gloss black and silver. The new Grandland is also available in Opel’s characteristic two-tone paint for the roof. LATEST DIGITAL TECH Inside the cabin of the new Grandland, two wide screens in a single unit form the Opel Pure Panel. This fully digital, driveroriented cockpit is intuitive to operate. It comprises the latest digital technologies and delivers the most important information. The central touchscreen faces the driver, who can therefore concentrate on driving without needing to take his or her eyes off the road. The new Opel Grandland features numerous assistance systems: night vision, highway integration assist, 360-degree panorama camera, automatic parking assistant, blind spot warning system, front collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian
detection, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, drowsiness detection and cruise control. Connectivity and entertainment are provided by infotainment systems that are also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android. The top-of-the-line Multimedia Navi Pro delivers real-time traffic information, online map updates and predictive navigation. Wireless charging in the centre console provides neat and tidy "refuelling" without cables for compatible smartphones. Class-leading technologies and high comfort are complemented
by the new Grandland's strong performance and pure, bold design. Continuing Opel's electrification strategy, the plug-in hybrid versions deliver not only sports carlike acceleration but also emissions-free driving, thanks to their electric motors or motor and regenerative braking. Thanks to the flexibility of the multi-energy platform, Grandland customers can choose their preferred propulsion system – from efficient diesel and petrol engines to electrified plug-in hybrids. The new Opel Grandland is available in three trim levels: SC, SRI and Elite, with
By DECLAN GLYNN www.motoringmatters.ie prices starting at €37,395 (ex-delivery). AWARD-WINNING COMFORT Additionally, the new Opel Grandland meets the highest standards when it comes to comfort. The ergonomic active seats for drivers and front passengers certified by the "Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V." (campaign for healthy backs) support good posture behind the steering wheel. The award-winning seats are unique in the Grandland's class and offer a wide range of adjustments, from electric seat tilt to electropneumatic lumbar support. In the leather trim they offer heating and even ventilation. Comfort is further increased by "Keyless Open & Start" and the sensor-controlled tailgate that can be opened and closed by a movement of the foot under the rear bumper.
Speed limits could also be set dynamically, to take into account local hazards, temporary road works and the time of day. The trial runs until March 2023 and is part of broader research initiatives putting pre-production and prototype Ford E-Transit vehicles to the test across a variety of intensive realworld operating scenarios, including in the postal, municipal and utilities services, as well as last mile and grocery delivery sectors within France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK. Ford is also using geofencing technology to improve air quality in cities, ensuring that the Ford Transit Custom plug-in hybrid electric vehicle runs automatically in zeroemission electric-drive mode whenever the vehicle enters a zone. FIRST DRIVING IMPRESSIONS At a recent Irish Media launch event, I was lucky
enough to get the opportunity to take a new Opel Grandland Elite 6-speed manual for a relatively short drive on the roads around the Heritage at Killenard, Co. Laois. The petrol-powered 1.2litre Turbo engine produces 130PS (128bhp) and 230Nm of torque for swift acceleration and good flexibility, and this is the kind of performance that is ideally suited to a family SUV. The six-speed manual transmission’s shift action is smooth in its operation, while overall refinement on the road is excellent. Additionally, suitablylight steering, impressive driving dynamics and terrific outward visibility make the new Grandland a real pleasure to drive. I am looking forward to spending a week behind the wheel of the new Grandland in the weeks ahead, and I will publish my full road test review then.

New ŠKODA ENYAQ is quietly confident T
he Enyaq model opens a new chapter in the 125-year history of the Škoda brand. Škoda SUV’s have traditionally had names ending in the letter Q, and the new Enyaq follows in the footsteps of the Kamiq, Karoq and Kodiaq models in that respect. However, the new model’s first letter shows that this tradition is merging with the eMobility era, referenced by the letter E at the beginning of the name. The name Enyaq is derived from the Irish name Enya, which means ‘source of life’, and it expresses the passion for innovation brought to life by Škoda’s engineers and designers. WELL PROVEN PLATFORM The new Skoda Enyaq iV is based on the same MEB platform as the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Audi Q4 e-tron, but with distinctive and elegant Škoda styling to make it stand out from its VW Group relatives. As is the case with every vehicle in the impressive Škoda line-up, the new Enyaq is a sensible, stylish and practical car in every respect. As well as generous legroom for the three rear seat passengers, it has a well-executed cargo area too. The 585-litres of space available behind the rear seats can be expanded to a huge 1,710-litres when the rear seat backs are folded down. A separate storage space underneath the boot floor is ideal for storing the charging leads, but can also accommodate the likes of laptops and other electronic devices in order to keep them away from prying eyes. BATTERY & TRIM OPTIONS Škoda has kept the Enyaq iV range relatively simple to understand, with two battery sizes available – the 58kWh iV 60 and the 77kWh iV 80. The smaller battery model produces 178bhp (180PS) and 310Nm of torque via a rear-mounted electric motor powering the rear wheels, while the iV 80 produces 201bhp (204PS) along with 310Nm of torque, and is also rear-wheel drive.
For drivers looking for the benefit of all-wheel drive motoring, an iV 80X variant is available with 261bhp (265PS) and a hefty 425Nm of torque. The iV 60 models have a claimed driving range of up to 412kms, with the iV 80 capable of driving up to 534kms on a single charge. This figure drops to 496kms for the iV 80X due to the added weight of the allwheel drive system. All of these figures were achieved under strict WLTP real-world testing procedures, and should be achievable under the right weather and road conditions. Just two trim levels are available in the new Enyaq – an entry-level Enyaq, and a Sportline variant for a more dynamic sporty look and feel. CHARGING OPTIONS Charging the Enyaq’s batteries from 0-100% can be done via a domestic wallbox in nine and a half hours or 13 hours (iV 60 and
Test Drive The
By DECLAN GLYNN www.motoringmatters.ie iV 80 respectively), but most drivers will never let the battery get anywhere near 0% before charging their car. However, at a public DC fast charging station, the Enyaq can achieve a 5-80% charge in as little as 35 minutes (model and battery dependent). Buyers looking for an allelectric family car are becoming increasingly spoilt for choice, and the Enyaq iV not only has to compete with rivals from within the VW Group, it is also up against tough competition from the new Kia e-Niro, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Volvo
C40/XC40 Recharge, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the Kia EV6. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a Škoda Enyaq iV 80 Sportline, which looked amazing in ultra-stylish Race Blue metallic paintwork and optional 21-inch ‘Betria’ alloy wheels. The interior of the Enyaq is welcoming, luxurious and tastefully finished in quality materials throughout. With striking looks and a cabin full of the latest tech, the Enyaq iV is a new breed of stylish Škoda. At 13-inches, the crisp

and clear infotainment system in the Enyaq iV is the largest ever included in a Škoda model, and it comes with integrated sat-nav and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity a standard. The Enyaq feels refined and self-assured on the road, and it proves itself to be surprisingly dynamic to drive. A well-judged suspension set-up ensures that road imperfections are soaked up with ease, while precise and well-weighted steering works well around town. Motorway driving is made easy by the provision
of plenty of mid-range punch from the electric motor, allowing for the safe and predictable overtaking of slower moving traffic. The Enyaq is comfortable, refined and responsive to drive, and being rear-wheel drive, there is none of the torque steer that can be evident in front-wheel drive EV’s. Featuring a 150kW electric motor powering the rear wheels, the Enyaq iV 80 can sprint from 0-100km/h in 8.7-seconds, and can reach a top speed of 160km/h. In addition to the generous standard specification found in the iV 60, the iV 80 also includes a rear view camera, front and rear parking sensors, chrome window surrounds and roof rails, Drive mode select (Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual), steering wheel controls for energy recuperation, and a 2-spoke heated leather steering wheel. Key features in Sportline trim include Matrix LED headlights (including headlight washers), LED tail
lights with dynamic indicators, front and rear sport bumpers, sports suspension, black body and window trim, rear privacy glass, leatherette-wrapped dashboard with silver stitching, front sports seats, and leather and suede upholstery, along with a wireless charging pad. CONCLUSION & PRICING To conclude, the new Škoda Enyaq iV is an excellent all-rounder. It is a spacious and practical mode of family transport, it has a good driving range, and it is more affordable than many of its rivals too. The 1,000kg brakedtrailer towing capacity of the iV 60 and 80 models can be increased to 1,200kg by opting for the all-wheel drive iV 80X model. Pricing for the new Škoda Enyaq starts at just €39,495 (iV 60) with my test car specification priced at €53,525 (quoted prices are on-the-road, including VRT relief and an SEAI grant for private buyers, where applicable).

he new Peugeot 408 is unexpected because it is different. It is the first of its kind, both in the history of the Brand itself and in the car market as a whole. With the new 408, Peugeot demonstrates the creativity of its teams by offering a new fastback silhouette at the top of the C segment. This new age Peugeot offers a feline stance and unique allure, engineering excellence focused on efficiency and intelligent electrification, as well as the emotions provided by cuttingedge technologies dedicated to driving pleasure and instinctive use. With a length of 4.69m, based on a long wheelbase of 2.79m, the new Peugeot 408 has a remarkably spacious second row, with 188mm of legroom. The boot is also generously sized, with a volume of 536 litres, which can be increased to 1.611 litres once the rear seats are folded down. The new Peugeot 408 is 1.48m high with a slim and sleek silhouette. This improves aerodynamic efficiency. ALLURE. The Peugeot 408 stands out first and foremost for its dynamic fastback silhouette and its unmistakable style, but also for the extent to which it breaks the mould. Its feline stance is typical of the Brand’s models. Its lines are sharp, the grille is the same colour as the bodywork to blend in perfectly with the front end, and it proudly boasts the new Peugeot emblem with the head of a lion. The inverted cut-out of the rear bumper is unexpected, while giving the profile a strong look. The new Peugeot 408 sits solidly on 720mm diameter wheels and the iconic 20inch rims feature a disruptive geometric design. At the front, the fang-shaped light signature perfectly integrates the 408 into the Peugeot family, as do the three-claw LED lights at the rear. EMOTION. For both its driver and its passengers, the Peugeot 408 offers the latest generation of the Peugeot
i-Cockpit®, instantly recognisable by its compact steering wheel dedicated to driving pleasure and controlled agility. In the cockpit, the emphasis is on quality and connectivity, with the very latest technologies to make the driving and travelling experience more intuitive and rewarding. EXCELLENCE. Powered by 6 cameras and 9 radars, the driver assistance systems provide peace of mind and safety. The new Peugeot 408 will arrive on the market at the very beginning of 2023. A car with a global ambition, it will be produced at first in Mulhouse, France, for the European market and then, soon afterwards, in the Chengdu factory in China for the local market. The range of engines powering the Peugeot 408 includes two rechargeable hybrid versions with 180 and 225bhp, and a 130bhp petrol version. All three are paired with an 8-speed EAT8 automatic gearbox. An all-electric version will follow in the near future. With the new 408, the Peugeot brand completes its offer in the highly strategic C segment. Peugeot has taken a leading position in this segment over the last few years, with the success of the 3008 and 5008 SUVs, and of three generations of 308 saloons and 308 SW estate cars, the latest of which has just been launched. The Peugeot 408 completes the Brand's offer and is positioned at the top end of the C-segment. The new Peugeot 408 echoes the values and concerns of a population at the cutting edge of modernity: dynamic and hyper-connected, these people want to contribute to the energy transition, without having to sacrifice moments of pleasure. They are looking for novelty and appreciate the creativity and audacity of new combinations that break away from established categories. Specification and pricing will be announced in the coming months.

he new Polestar brand is Volvo’s luxury platform for uniquely-designed and sporty electric models, and the Polestar 2 is the very first car from the Swedish brand to be sold in Ireland. The Polestar 2 is a desirable five-door hatchback with quality, handling and battery technology benchmarked against premium segment competitors, such as the Tesla Model 3. The Polestar 2 sits higher on the road than a saloon car, but it stops short of being a crossover/SUV, while its premium grade battery tech, and comprehensive equipment list will also tempt buyers away from the German premium brands too.
DISTINCTLY SPORTY It is clear to see that the Polestar 2 is a car from the Volvo family, but it also has a solid, sporty and distinctively Swedish feel of its own. Under the skin lies the same CMA platform that is used by a Volvo XC40, but it has been updated with a unique front subframe for extra crash protection, and there are modifications at the rear to support the heavy lithium-ion battery pack. The Polestar 2 is designed to protect the battery pack during an impact and automatically disconnect it after a collision. On both front ends, a SPOC (Severe Partial Overlap Crash) block is attached to mitigate the crash forces and prevent any material entering the occupant compartment. The Polestar 2 also features a centre airbag to protect from farside impacts, and it achieved a full five-star Euro ECAP rating when it was tested in 2021. Also standard is a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, making it one of the safest cars on the road.
TRULY SCANDINAVIAN The understated design of the Polestar 2 is made up of clean and contemporary lines in true Scandinavian fashion, and it marks the car out as something a little different to the norm. The car has outstanding road presence, and it looks great from every angle, with nice touches such as frameless door mirrors and smart door handles providing extra visual drama. Configuration options for the Polestar 2 consist of a Standard Range Single Motor, and a Long Range Single Motor version, both of which are front-wheel drive, and a Long Range Dual Motor with all-wheel drive as standard – all of which are available with the option of a Plus Pack, Pilot Lite Pack and a Performance Pack for next-level responsiveness on the road. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor model with an optional Plus Pack, which was finished in Midnight Blue metallic paint with Charcoal WeaveTech (Vegan) upholstery. On top of an exceptionally
comprehensive standard equipment tally, Plus Pack brings with it a Harmon Kardon Premium Sound System, panoramic roof, energy-saving heat pump, heated steering wheel and rear seats, heated washer nozzles, boot floor lid-in-lid divider with bag-holding functionality, air quality software, and a 15W inductive charging facility for Smartphones. The comfortable and spacious cabin of the Polestar 2 has a solid Volvo-like feel to the trim. An 11inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system is the main feature, and it uses a Google operating system with pre-loaded Google Maps for added convenience when called upon. There is plenty of leg and head room on offer throughout the cabin, and a 405-litre boot space behind the rear seats can be expanded to 1,095-litres by dropping the rear seat backs when required, plus there is added storage space under the bonnet too. The long range single motor model has an official WLTP driving range of up to 540kms between charges, while 231bhp and 330Nm of torque provides the car with
plenty of immediate shove in order to make it feel quite sporty. This power is supplied to the cars’ front wheels in a refined and orderly fashion, with the car feeling precise and very stable at all times. Excellent driving dynamics, along with the low centre of gravity created by the battery placement, enable the car to handle superbly in a very reassuring manner. The Polestar 2 driver can turn on a ‘one pedal braking mode’ if they so wish, and this makes driving pretty effortless, without losing the element of fun contained within. The 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in just 7.4-seconds, with an energy consumption figure of 17kWh/100kms achievable on a combined WLTP driving cycle. CHARGING OPTIONS There are a number of ways you can charge the Polestar 2, from plugging it into the mains at home, charging via a domestic wall box charger, or by way of a public charging station. For example, a 40-minute charge at a fast charging station should be enough to charge the
37 MotorMarket
Polestar 2’s battery to 80%. Charging time doesn’t have to be lost time. The Polestar 2’s Android-powered infotainment system turns the car into an office you can work in, a den you can hang out in, and, in the near future, a shop you can buy things in. The car comes with three years of unlimited internet connectivity so you can navigate, stream music and enjoy its other smart functionalities as much as you like. ACCOMPLISHED AND HIGHLY COMMENDABLE The Polestar 2 is one of the most accomplished electric cars that money can buy right now.
Every detail of the car is designed to be quietly distinctive, while its well-appointed interior pairs avant-garde styling with innovative materials for the electric age we are living in. Seamless connectivity, outstanding performance, and terrific driver engagement, along with cutting-edge safety technology and handsome styling should be enough to shoot the new Polestar 2 right to the top of ever-expanding EV hatchback market. Pricing starts at just €49,500 for the Polestar 2, and orders can be placed on the official Polestar website www.polestar.com
Minister Naughton set to double fines for key road traffic offences M
inister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton is set to introduce regulations that will double the fixed charges relating to key road safety offences including speeding, phone use and non-wearing of seatbelts. This will see the fine for speeding increase from €80 to €160 and the fine for using a mobile phone while driving or for not wearing a seatbelt will double to €120. Fines will be doubled for other offences that put the safety of vulnerable road users at risk. All of us have a responsibility to stop this upward trend in road crashes. I want to commend the Minister’s decision to double the fines for drivers who break lifesaving rules of the road. There are too many people being killed and seriously injured and we must act to prevent more families from going through this trauma.” She continued: “At the RSA we will be launching a new campaign to highlight what’s known as the ‘Speed Fallacy’ The ‘Speed Fallacy’ is the belief that you save lots of time by speeding on a journey when in fact the time savings are miniscule, a minute or two at most on an average journey.” She concluded by saying: “We are heading into the main summer holiday period of the year and road users should expect increased traffic volumes and therefore a higher level of risk when using the road. We are asking all road users to bear this in mind. Our advice to all road users is to remain alert to danger and expect the unexpected on the road.”
Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, An Garda Síochána said: “There has been an alarming increase in road traffic incidents this year. We know many people will be eager to take to the roads to enjoy the remainder of the summer period, but we want people to do so responsibly. Sadly, 94 families already this year have been visited by members of An Garda Síochána to be told the devastating news of the loss of a loved one. “An Garda Síochána will continue to enforce our life saving road traffic laws and we are committed to targeted enforcement and increased Garda visibility on our roads to address the worrying increase in road deaths this year.” Assistant Commissioner
Hilman added, “I am pleased to announce that as of 6am this morning, 61 New safety camera zones will become operational, bringing the total number of safety camera zones nationwide to 1,373”. Between January and mid-July this year a total of 88,368 motorists have been detected speeding, I would appeal to all motorists to slowdown. Sam Waide, CEO of the RSA said: “As we head into main holidaying month of summer, the roads will be busy with people holidaying at home and tourists holidaying here from Northern Ireland, and further afield. The roads will also be very busy with people socialising, travelling to sporting events, festivals, agricultural vehicles bringing in winter and spring harvests, cyclists, walkers, and children
who are on summer holidays. “My appeal is for all road users to share the road safely, be considerate of other road users and most of all slow down. It’s better to arrive alive than not at all.” He added “We are deeply concerned by the level of fatalities and serious injuries taking place on our roads already this year. The progress we have made in road safety over the last number of years is at risk of stalling. “The June Bank Holiday alone saw eight people die in road collisions on what should have been an enjoyable long weekend which instead turned into a tragedy for some. Let’s all work together to avoid a repeat of this and ensure we all stay safe and enjoy what remains of the summer.”

on’t know your ABS from your EBD? Acronyms are now part of automotive language and they can be really confusing – even for the most dedicated motoring enthusiast. They often refer to a specific system fitted to a vehicle. To add to the confusion some car manufacturers call the same system different names! A complete list of automotive acronyms would be virtually infinite, as with every new vehicle model comes new systems and another list of car acronyms. We’ve compiled a list of the most commonly used motoring acronyms, with a brief description of what each one means. So when you go shopping for a car, you’ll be armed with information to help you to understand the sales jargon. If you’re buying a new car, there are certain systems you should consider. Things like ABS, ESP, EBD etc are safety related, and many new cars will be fitted with them as standard equipment. Don’t take it for granted that a new car will have them though. If they’re important to you it’s worth asking the question. So, now that you are armed with some information, you can go shopping with your own list of priorities. Road Safety Champions • Road Safety Authority calls for nominations for ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards 2022 • New Gay Byrne Media Award for Road Safety announced in honour of former RSA Chairperson • 11 categories including ‘Future Award’ and ‘Sustainable Travel Award’
T
he Road Safety Authority (RSA) is calling on the public to submit nominations to the national ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards which are returning this year following a two-year absence due to COVID-19. The awards recognise a group or individual who campaigns, educates, and is committed to improving road safety in their community and honours the significant contribution made by people and organisations nationwide in reducing deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads. Nominations are now open and can be submitted online on the Leading Lights webpage on rsa.ie and anyone submitting a nomination is encouraged to include relevant background information, such as photos, videos, or other supporting documents to enhance their application. The closing date for entries is October 28th, 2022. The 2022 awards will see a continued emphasis on alternative transport modes with a ‘Sustainable Travel’ category, which recognises a group or individual who has positively influenced a modal shift to sustainable travel. A ‘Future Award’ will be given to an individual, business or organisation that displays innovation and forward-thinking in promoting road safety. In addition, the Media Award, which is aimed at journalists and media groups, has been renamed the ‘Gay Byrne Media Award’ in honour of former RSA Chairperson. Announcing the call for entries, Liz O’Donnell, Chairperson of the Road Safety Authority said: “I am delighted to announce that the much-anticipated ‘Leading Lights’ awards are returning this year. In every community in Ireland, there are unsung heroes working to make our roads safer.
“These awards recognise the extraordinary contributions made by these volunteers, teachers, students, businesses, public bodies, journalists, and community groups to reduce serious injuries and deaths on our roads. “If you know someone or an organisation that has made a significant effort to promote road safety in your community, I would encourage you to nominate them for this year’s ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards so that we can recognise the important work that they do.” She added: “In December, we launched the fifth Government Road Safety Strategy which aims to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads by 50% over the next 10 years. It’s the first step towards Vision Zero, Ireland's long-term goal of achieving zero road deaths or serious injuries by 2050. The great work being down in our towns, villages, cities, rural areas and communities by Individuals and organisations highlights the shared responsibility we all have in making our roads safe and achieving these targets.” Entries will be accepted in each of the following categories: Road Safety Champion of the Year This award will be given to an individual who has raised awareness of road safety in their community and who acts as an ambassador for others on how to be road safety aware. Education Pre-primary, Primary, Secondary, Special, Third Level/Further and Community Education. Public Sector Business Emergency Services Gay Byrne Media Award

This award will be given to the individual or group who, in the opinion of the independent judges, has made an outstanding contribution to road safety. The supreme award is dedicated to Gertie Shields, an inspirational road safety activist who sadly passed away in 2015 and who won the Supreme Award in 2013. Full details on the awards and categories can be found on the ‘Leading Lights’ webpage on rsa.ie. The entries will be judged by an expert and independent judging panel. The winners of each category will be announced at a gala awards ceremony in Croke Park in December. IRELAND’S ROAD SAFETY STRATEGY Ireland’s fifth government Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 aims to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads by 50% over the next 10 years. This means reducing deaths on Ireland’s roads annually from 144 to 72 or lower and reducing serious injuries from 1,259 to 630 or lower by 2030. The strategy is the first step in achieving the 2020 Programme for Government commitment of bringing Ireland to ‘Vision Zero’. This is to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads by the year 2050. 40 MotorMarket
CHECK TYRE PRESSURES A poorly inflated tyre means that the engine has to work harder to move you down the road. Check your handbook for the correct pressure for your car and get them checked. It’s a really simple change that can save you money as well as reducing the wear on your tyres. USE ECO MODE Lots of modern cars offer a variety of driving settings from Sport to Eco. If you want to save fuel use the Eco setting. Being first away from the traffic lights means you’re the first who is going to have to fill up in the garage. USE TOP GEAR Driving in low gears forces the engine to rev up and increases the amount of fuel you’re using. Get into top gear as soon as you can to reduce the stress on the engine and on your pocket. LOOK AHEAD Each time you brake you’re using more fuel as you waste energy accelerating and braking. Read the road ahead and look at what is going to happen so you can maintain a steady speed and avoid unnecessary stop-start driving. AIR CON IS NOT YOUR FRIEND While we all enjoy the benefits of the cool air from air conditioning, it doesn’t come for free. Each time you turn on the A/C you are asking the engine to work harder and use more fuel. On short journeys using that cool air can be using as much as 10% extra. YOUR CAR IS NOT A SHED Open the boot of the car and if you are using it to store golf clubs, buggies and tools it’s costing you money. Storing weighty items in your car is an extra strain on the engine so it’s costing you every time you drive. Reduce the weight you are carrying and it’ll help your pocket.
STRONG START TO JULY FOR RENAULT GROUP R
enault Group Ireland has seen a strong start to July with an 8.3% combined market share bringing the Group into fourth position already this month. June was a positive month for the Group finishing in second position in the car and van market combined with Dacia finishing in the Top-5 in the car market in June. The all-new Renault Arkana was the number two best-selling car model as well as achieving second position in the C-SUV segment. Overall, in the B segment, Renault Group achieved number one status in June and comes in at number two year to date. The ever-popular Clio was the second bestselling car in the B-hatch segment, with the indemand Dacia Sandero in 4th position. the rebranded Mobilize Financial Services have been very busy these past weeks. “Looking forward we are excited
CITROËN UNVEIL NEW C4X
C
itroën have revealed the New C4 X model which features a unique, elegant design approach that incorporates fastback elegance with SUV attitude. This New C4 X will sit between the C4 and C5 X in the current Citroën line-up and offers notable increases in both length and boot capacity versus the current C4 model. Following in the footsteps of the stylish New Citroën C5 X, the design of this C4 X challenges the traditional definition of a compact car by offering a unique crossover design which combines an elegant fastback silhouette with a modern SUV attitude. The appeal of practicality and spaciousness is also evident from the 4-door design, generous rear legroom and impressive boot space on offer. The C4 X will be built on the
Stellantis CMP platform as per its current C4 sibling but at 4600 mm long, the New C4 X gains 240mm in length and 130 litres of additional boot capacity versus the existing C4 to boast an impressive boot space of 510 litres. On the outside, the familiar front-end incorporates Citroën’s assertive rounded design signature. The high, horizontal bonnet features the trademark chrome chevrons that stretch across the width of the body, connecting with double-height front LED headlights. The design enhancements are more significant from the side and rear profile, as the dynamic roofline flows seamlessly from the top of the rear windscreen onto the top panel of the boot lid to create a fastback silhouette. The intelligently designed rear overhang disguises the
increased vehicle length while the rear boot lid panel folds down towards the rear bumper in a seamless design with a softly integrated spoiler completing the fastback look. Distinctive new LED tail lights are placed at either side of the boot opening which carry through the sculpted lines of the boot lid, pushing around the corners and along the sides of the car to complement the distinctive front headlights. Inside, the C4 X gains a new level of connectivity via the intuitive next-generation MyCitroën Drive Plus infotainment interface, first seen on the Citroën C5 X. This 10” HD interface is fully customised via the use of widgets and integrates seamlessly with My Citroën Play (featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and My Citroën Drive which provides real time traffic updates, weather
information, locations and pricing for fuel station and speed camera alerts. Further integration is possible via the My Citroën App which updates users on the battery status of their vehicle and allows for cabin pre-conditioning. The C4 X will come as standard with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension and Advanced Comfort Seats to ensure optimal Citroën comfort, while offering up to 20 Citroën Advanced Driver Assistance Systems including Active Safety Brake and Highway Driver Assist. Meanwhile, the colour head up display and 360-degree vision camera further enhance comfort and reduce stress. The C4 X will be available in Ireland exclusively as an allelectric model but petrol and diesel versions will also be produced for other markets. Thanks to its smooth, aerodynamic shape the ë-C4 X offers an impressive WLTP range of up to 360 km. The ë-C4 X will be powered by a 50 kWh battery pack and a 100 kW electric motor which provides 136 hp and 260 Nm of torque, a 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds (in Sport mode) and a top speed of 150 km/h. As with the ë-C4, regenerative braking enables battery recharge while three driving modes will be available (Eco, Normal or Sport) to allow for a customised driving experience. Where do stolen cars disappear to? While stolen cars in Ireland normally turn up, a small percentage simply disappear, never to be seen again. There have been cases of cars being stolen and broken up for sale as parts, and the Gardaí have had success in breaking up gangs involved in this trade. Recent research in the UK has tracked the destination of stolen cars seized in their ports. The biggest single location they have been destined for is Northern Cyprus. Next as the most likely home for stolen cars was The Democratic Republic of Congo followed by Ghana and the UAE. So you’ve been warned, if you don’t want your precious car ending up in a faraway location keep it and the keys safe at all times.

New Nissan JUKE Hybrid fuels Nissan’s charge towards electrification
N
issan’s rapid shift towards electrification continues to gather momentum with the launch of the new Nissan JUKE Hybrid. The arrival of the new Nissan JUKE Hybrid is the next chapter in Nissan’s ongoing charge towards an electrified future, following hot on the heels of the launch of the all new Nissan Ariya 100% electric crossover and all new Nissan Qashqai mild hybrid. The new Nissan JUKE Hybrid has rewritten the rules in its segment to deliver an EV-like drive experience. It starts in 100% electric mode and can reach speeds of up to 55kph in pure EV mode thanks to an advanced multimodal hybrid powertrain which prioritises fuel efficiency, responsiveness and a harmonious drive. The new powertrain has been specially designed to complement the already agile, dynamic personality which has proved so popular with customers of the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the Nissan JUKE. The sporty coupé crossover design
remains with some small changes to optimise aerodynamic efficiency. Where traditional hybrids offer an uninspiring experience because of the complex amalgamation of ICE and battery power, the JUKE Hybrid’s intelligent drive system has been tuned to maximise the amount of time JUKE spends in EV mode, giving drivers what they appreciate the most. While the system will automatically maximise EV usage, the JUKE Hybrid is also equipped with a dedicated EV mode switch which can be used when drivers do not want to leave the engine running, such as in traffic jams, in residential areas, in built up areas around schools or
in car parks. The JUKE Hybrid powertrain consists of a new generation, state-of-the-art combustion engine specifically developed for working in a hybrid powertrain application. It produces 69 kW (94hp) and 148Nm of torque. The main electric motor produces 36kW (49hp) and 205Nm of torque. The net result is a powertrain providing 25% more power than the current petrol engine option, with a fuel consumption reduction up to 40% in urban cycle, and up to 20% over the combined cycle. (Figures subject to homologation). As with the 100% electric Nissan LEAF,
the JUKE Hybrid is equipped with Nissan’s e-pedal, enabling the driver to launch, accelerate and decelerate using only the accelerator. A 7” combimeter screen displays visual reminders when ePedal and EV mode are activated. It also shows all the different energy flows in a simple and clear animation, maximising driver understanding of the how the system is operating. The boot space is 354 litres. With rear seats folded, boot space remains the best in class with 1,237 litres, while rear knee room remains unchanged at 553mm. Nissan has also introduced all-new twotone 17” alloy wheels as well as the
Nissan Ariya-derived two-tone 19” aero wheels for visual impact and efficiency. “Nissan is charging towards an electrified future and building upon a decade of EV expertise. We are paving the way to a sustainable future and we are committed to ensuring that 75% of our sales mix will be fully electric by 2023,” said Seamus Morgan, Managing Director of Nissan Ireland. Pricing for the new Nissan JUKE Hybrid will be announced later this summer. Customers can register their interest in ordering the car at their local Nissan dealer and can also find more details by visiting www.nissan.ie

New Audi Q3 TFSI e – Sporty and Electrifying T
Audi has launched a new PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) version of its top-selling Q3 Compact SUV, which is powered by the same 1.4-litre hybrid powertrain as found in other Volkswagen Group PHEV cars. Audi’s newcomer is badged Q3 45 TFSI e, and it comes with a choice of body style – a familiar five-door SUV guise, or a Sportback Coupé-SUV. The Q3 TFSI e stands as a direct rival to several of the more premium compact PHEV SUV’s on the market, including the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Lexus UX, and the Volvo XC40 Recharge T5. The Audi Q3 TFSI e combines the advantages of a combustion engine and an electric motor, enabling drivers to go electric on short journeys and use the efficient petrol engine on longer ones. The Q3’s driver assist systems come from the premium class, and include adaptive cruise assist (optional), which assists the driver with longitudinal and lateral control – substantially enhancing comfort on long journeys in particular. Advanced safety systems such as Audi pre sense basic, Audi pre sense front, Audi side assist, and lane departure warning come as standard. CAR ON REVIEW My review car was a Q3 45 TFSI e SUV S Line, which looked particularly striking in its Tango Red metallic paintwork and upgraded 19”
matte black alloy wheels. The relatively wide tyres provide plenty of grip and provide the Q3 with an excellent ride quality, while a light steering feel provides sufficient feedback to the driver. There is little in the way of body lean through corners, and the car feels competent and self-assured at all times, while overall refinement is excellent. The standard six-speed automatic (S tronic) transmission in the Q3 TFSI e provides power to the front wheels in a wellcontrolled and relaxed manner, and with a combined output of 242bhp (245PS) and 400Nm of torque, the 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in just 7.3seconds. The 13kWh battery is located under the Q3’s
floor in front of the rear axle, and using that alone it is possible to drive up to 51kms at speeds of up to 139km/h. VERDICT & PRICING The beautifullyappointed Audi Q3 45 TFSI e is an excellent all-rounder in every respect, and it comes with potential fuel consumption as low as 1.4l/100km (up to 201mpg). Comfortable seats, intuitive infotainment controls, a spacious and practical cabin, excellent safety features and outstanding build quality make the new Audi Q3 stand out from the crowd. The Q3 45 TFSI e S tronic SE is priced from €49,180 with the S Line edition costing from €52,970 (inclusive of dealer delivery charges).
DID YOU KNOW...‘Audi’ is Latin for ‘hear’. Audi’s founder, German engineer August Horch left his first car company after a falling out with the CFO, starting a rival company which he called August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH. However, the Horch name belonged to his former company, so he renamed the company with the Latin translation of Horch; Audi. It means ‘hear’, and is the same word we get ‘audio’ from.
Moffett clinches Triton title in Tipperary M
onaghan’s Josh Moffett and his Limerick codriver Keith Moriarty have clinched the Triton Showers-backed Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship courtesy of their start to finish victory in the Clonmel based Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally, round six of the series. It was Moffett’s sixth win in as many rounds, the series concludes with the Galway Summer Rally (August 28) and the Donegal Harvest Rally (October 8). They finished a minute and 9.6 seconds ahead of Dubliner Gareth MacHale (VW Polo GTi R5) and his Killarney codriver Ger Conway with Cork’s David Guest/Jonathan McGrath, debuting their new Ford Fiesta Rally2, a further 39.5 seconds behind in third. The Cavan/Derry combination of Chris Armstrong/Gavin Doherty (Ford Escort) were the top two-wheel drive crew, finishing sixth overall. Moffett punched in the best time on the opening stage that finished near Fethard and led Cork driver Daniel Cronin (VW Polo GTi R5) by 4.9 seconds with Louth’s Brendan Cumiskey, also in a Polo, just eight tenths of a second further behind in third.
Although late entry Armagh’s Darren Gass (Citroen C3) moved into second after the second stage, he bowed out on the final stage of the loop when a rear wheel hub sheared, spinning him into an early exit. Luckily, his car escaped contact with a concrete pillar. Meanwhile, Moffett, who topped the time sheets on all three stages of the loop, arrived at the Powerstown service park with a 16.6 second lead over Cronin. “All’s fine, my tyres went off towards the end of the second stage and for whatever reason, I didn’t like the third stage, I couldn’t get into a rhythm so I pulled back a bit,” commented the rally leader. Second placed Cronin admitted he was rusty on the opening stage, his first event in some eleven weeks. “It was hard to get the tyres working on the opening two stages but they were fine through the third stage.” Gareth MacHale (VW Polo GTi R5) was 13.8 seconds further back in third, he caught up with Owen Murphy’s ex-Jonny Greer Citroen C3 when the Cork driver had intercom issues. Cumiskey was untroubled in fifth followed by the Fiesta R5 of Cavan’s Stephen McCann, who reckoned his car lacked the power out of the junctions. Fellow Cavan man Chris Armstrong (Ford Escort) was seventh and led the two-wheel drive category. Meanwhile, Paul Barrett (Ford Fiesta R5) clipped a rock on the second stage.
The top-ten was completed by Tim McNulty (Ford Fiesta Rally2) and Padraig Egan (Ford Escort), McNulty had no brakes for the second and third stage. On the repeat loop, Moffett stretched his advantage to 55.1 seconds, Cronin retired his VW Polo after breaking a compression strut on SS 5, his demise promoted an untroubled – 25 seconds ahead of Guest, who continued to tweak the suspension of his Fiesta Rally2. Cumiskey, McCann and Armstrong followed. McNulty crashed on SS 4 and Owen Murphy parked his Citroen
with an oil leak on SS 6. Barrett in seventh had issues with the rear differential. The Mark 2 Escorts of Patrick McHugh and Ed O’Callaghan were next in classification, the latter feeling quite unwell. Gareth Sayers (Fiesta R5) was tenth. On the final loop Moffett powered his way to event and championship victory. Gareth MacHale changed a punctured wheel prior to the final stage where he set equal fastest time with Moffett. Guest completed the podium line-up. There were little change
elsewhere, O’Callaghan retired as Jack Newman (Escort) repelled the challenge of Aaron MacHale (VW Polo GTi R5) for tenth by a mere tenth of a second. Armagh’s Jason Black (Toyota Starlet) was twelfth. Ritchie’s Mints and Projob Workwear are associate sponsors of the Triton Showers-backed Motorsport Ireland Rally Championship.
