OOZES FRENCH CHIC AND CHARM
The original DS 4 was launched back in 2011, and joined its DS 3 and DS 5 siblings to form a trio of flamboyantly-styled upmarket alternatives to other members of the mainstream Citroën lineup at the time.
As time went on, parent company PSA saw DS as an opportunity to cash in on the rich history of the DS brand and launch it as a brand in its own right, with a French luxury twist.
Now under the ownership of the giant Stellantis Group, the DS brand has launched the brand-new second-generation DS 4 as an accomplished rival that is capable of taking on the Audi A3, BMW 1Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

By DECLAN GLYNN www.motoringmatters.ieEverything about the cabin of the DS 4 is beautiful. The suede centre console provides the car with an upmarket look and feel, while the luxurious seats provide terrific support and comfort for all occupants.

console space in the process.
The electric window controls have been moved from the centre of the car, like on other DS products, to the tops of the doors – freeing up valuable centre
The centre console now accommodates a useful lidded cubby that neatly hides items from prying eyes, and the small screen located between the front seats serves as a shortcut device to operate the infotainment system.
Large door pockets, a decently-sized glovebox and additional space underneath the centre armrest will prove very useful on family days out, while growing families will also enjoy the generous head, leg and elbow room on offer within the cabin.

NEW DS 4
TRIM & ENGINE OPTIONS
Trim levels in the DS 4 consist of Bastille Plus, Performance Line, Trocadero, Performance Line Plus, and range-topping Rivoli.
Depending on the trim level, buyers can choose between a 1.2litre PureTech 130PS petrol engine, a 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130PS diesel engine or an E-TENSE 225PS Plugin Hybrid (PHEV), all of which come with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard.
The DS 4 uses the same EMP2 platform that is used across other brands in the Stellantis Group portfolio, but 70% of it has been modified to meet various specific DS 4 requirements.
CAR ON REVIEW
My DS 4 review car was a Performance Line Plus E-TENSE 225PS variant, and it looked spectacular in its Pearl White Pearlescent paintwork with contrasting 19-inch ‘Minneapolis’ black alloy wheels.
The 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, in conjunction with the electric motor, can propel the car from 0-100km/h in just 7.7seconds, with an electric driving range of up to 62km possible from a full battery.
In terms of charging, the battery can be fully charged from empty in under 2 hours from a wallbox charger, or just over 7
hours from a standard IE 3-pin socket.
The stylish gear selector is located on the centre console and adjacent to it is a Braking Mode (B) button that allows the car to use a higher level of regenerative braking and slow-up faster when your foot is off the accelerator.
Regenerative braking sends the kinetic energy back into the battery, thus helping to maximise range, with a charge of up to 20% possible around town.
The Performance Line Plus trim variant comes with a comprehensive array of safety, security, comfort, convenience, and infotainment systems as
standard, ensuring that the car drives and feels every bit as good as it looks – and it is a very good looking car, in fairness.
The DS 4 benefits from a soft suspension set-up that makes it one of the most comfortable cars in its class, and the double-glazed side windows transform the car into an oasis of calm on
motorway journeys.
Overall driving dynamics are impressive, and the car benefits from plenty of grip through corners, allowing for spirited performance on back roads.
Boot space in the new DS 4 PHEV measures in at a respectable 390-litres with the seats up and 1,190-litres when
they are folded down, while the underfloor storage area is an ideal place to keep the charging cables.
VERDICT & PRICING
The DS 4 is the most convincing car yet from DS Automobiles, and it possess an admirable level of French chic and charm.
DS has done a terrific job of making its new hatchback stand out in the premium market segment, with the DS 4 offering buyers a winning combination of French luxury, fuel-efficient powertrain options, striking design, advanced safety systems and intuitive infotainment.
On-the-road pricing for the new DS 4 starts at €37,995 (exdelivery). My review car specification is priced from €55,740 (ex-delivery), with annual road tax of just €140.
RICHARD BRANSON AND HIS CARS
Being a billionaire certainly allows you to indulge all your passions.
Richard Branson boasts jets and a private island as part of his collection of Big Boy Toys, but not
as much is known about his car passion.
Branson’s business interests, including The Virgin Group, has made him worth approximately $3.6 billion so it’s not surprising
that he has managed to buy himself a few motors to play with.
Surprisingly, pride of place goes to a 1968 Morris Minor which shares the garage with another vintage model, a 1950’s Humber Super Snipe.
More modern wheels include a Fisker Karma which was an early electric sports car that preceded Tesla, but went bust in 2013.
He also owns a Gibbs Aquada which is equally at home on the water or on dry land.
1968 Morris Minor
Both Land Rover and Range Rover models are available to him in his collection and of course he has an S Class Mercedes when the chauffeur is on duty.

Putin and the delivery of new cars problem
The mechanic is road testing it!
When an Australian driver left his rare 1986 Holden Commodore, worth $150,000 Australian dollars, in for a service he expected it to be treated with all the car and attention an Australian classic car deserves. Things went wrong when the mechanic took it
The shortage of available new cars is well known but many motorists may not have realised that the Russian dictator, Putin, has played his part in that.
The story starts with development over many decades of GEFCO, a European firm that specialised in all forms of transport, but with a particular speciality in transporting cars made in Europe to their purchasers and on to garage forecourts.
That company ended up 75% owned by the Russian railway company CMA-CGM and 25% owned by Stellantis the car manufacturing conglomerate. Their brands include Alfa, Citroën, Fiat, Opel and Peugeot.
Following the outbreak of the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine, Stellantis set about disposing of their 25% share in the transport company as they realised they couldn’t operate in defiance of European sanctions. That left the company ultimately 100% owned by the Russians.
Stellantis, and their brands, now face the challenge of trying to deliver their cars around Europe at the mercy of their Russian supplier, which in part explains why new cars are so difficult to source in Ireland.
Industry sources suggest that there are stockpiles of new cars available from European manufacturers but there is a logjam in getting them delivered.
out for a test drive to check that everything was working well.
It seems the 5 litre V8 was just a bit too much for the driver and he crashed the Commodore into three other cars. That was certainly an expensive service for somebody!
707KMS ON A SINGLE CHARGE
American EV manufacturer, Fisker, is about to launch on the European market following expected approval in April.
Fisker has been making inroads into the US market where their Fisker Ocean claims to be able to deliver 707KMs on a single charge. While there are no plans to launch on the Irish market it is likely to make its way here following a launch in the UK.

Tesla faces court action over ‘exploiting’ servicing in USA
When a pear is a car
Fisker is one of the many electric car manufacturers emerging from the almost Wild West-like rush to win the switch to EVs.
So far Fisker has managed to attract both investors and orders in the USA, so it may be one of
ATesla owner in San Francisco has taken Tesla to court.
The Tesla owner is claiming that they are exploiting their position by only offering servicing through their own networks.
Owners of traditional engine
cars have multiple options for servicing and repairs or can do the work themselves.
The repairs can rely on parts from the original manufacturer or parts made by another company, according to the complaint.
Tesla owners can only have
their cars serviced in Tesla approved centres using Tesla supplied products.
No doubt the enigmatic Elon Musk will deal with the threat of court with the same indifference that he has shown in his management of Twitter.
Jaguar to cut UK dealers
Jaguar dealers in the UK are coming to terms with plans by the manufacturer to reduce the number of dealers that will be needed in future.
There are over 80 Jaguar dealers in the UK and it seems that the manufacturer has decided that it will only need 18 to 20 of them as part of their new plans.
Over the next two years they expect to eliminate the majority of Jaguar outlets as the company transitions to an all-electric future.
Jaguar are typical of many manufacturers who are trying to minimise the dealer network they have to deal with as they hope customers will do more of their purchasing online.
That was the logic that Carvana and Cazoo thought would work for them, but proved to be a failure.
those start-ups that will actually make it into the motoring mainstream.
The latest news from them is that they are going to produce an electric budget car that will achieve 300 miles at under $30,000.
While that sounds great the name, Pear, is hard to live with. It stands for Personal Electric Automotive Revolution. Maybe the marketing people will put pressure on the designers and give it a name that would make it more attractive.
Ford cuts 1,100 jobs
The Spanish Ford plant in Valencia is cutting 1,100 jobs as they re-focus their manufacturing on plans to switch to producing electric cars.
The plant has been producing S-Max, Galaxy, Transit connect and Kuga models. This moves follows on from 3,800 job cuts in the Ford administration and product
development teams in Germany and the UK. Ford are committed to an allelectric line up and expect to reveal new models in the near future.

Robot to charge your electric car
If you think the idea of plugging in your EV is just too much trouble there is good news on the horizon for you.
The Korean car maker Hyundai have released details of a robot that will plug in to your car for you.
The prototype scans the car for the appropriate charging point and hooks it up to the EV charger.
The one armed charger apparently does this with ease and will unhook itself once the desired charging level has been reached.

BYD ARE ON A ROLL
Over the years the BBC Top Gear programme has had a fair share of difficulties as the controversial hosts have run into trouble.
Richard Hammond famously crashed twice on screen and Jeremy Clarkson tested the patience of the producers too much and was finally fired.
Freddie Flintoff now appears to be the latest to fall to the curse of Top Gear.
The 45-year-old cricketer was injured in December while driving a three wheeled Morgan Super 3, which flipped over at speed.
Since then Flintoff has
remained at home and BBC have now officially abandoned production on the current series,
although they say they will review the future of the show later this year.
At a time when some manufacturers are struggling, one Chinese manufacturer is breaking records.
Although the brand is virtually unknown here, BYD ranks amongst the global superstars of the motor industry.
BYD sold 1.86 million electric and plug-in hybrids in 2022, more than the previous four years combined and accounting for about 30% of all new-energy vehicle sales in China. Half of them were battery-
only EVs.
The company has stopped building petrol or diesel models completely and is now focused exclusively on the battery market.
The company has attracted many influential backers including the iconic American investor Warren Buffet.
His investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, invested $232 million in 2008 which now has a market valuation of $6billion.

New boss for BMW Ireland
BMW Ireland have appointed HELEN WESTBY as Managing Director.
Helen has been involved with BMW since 2000 where she has spent several years in learning and development roles.
While she is currently based in the UK with her husband and two daughters she will be moving to Ireland to take up her new position.
No doubt she will be a familiar face on BMW dealer forecourts in the near future.

Good news for EV users on Waze
Good news for electric vehicles drivers who like to navigate using Waze.
The app has now added information about charging stations, with crowd-sourced information that can be updated in real-time.
Waze, which is owned by Google, has grown in popularity because it uses crowd-sourced data to calculate real-time traffic information, helping to find a route where you can keep moving rather than get stuck in a big jam.
It’s also available through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
CAZOO AND CARVANA A lesson for the Irish trade
Every industry has disruptors who are determined to leave everything that is traditional behind them, and lead their industry into a new golden dawn.
The motor industry is no exception and when Carvana launched in the USA it promised that the future of car sales would be entirely online, just as Amazon has revolutionised book selling.
Investors were told that in the future, buyers would order their car online and simply pay over the web and collect it from a pickup point.
This model was followed by Cazoo in the UK who promised to change the face of car sales and would add the extra service of
delivering the car direct to the customer off the back of a truck.
The result has been a spectacular failure and both companies are now teetering on the brink of total collapse.
What the Wall Street investors and London Bankers forgot was that the car purchaser likes to engage with a forecourt professional they can trust.
Buying a car is still a huge investment for most purchasers and most customers need the reassurance of a knowledgeable specialist that cannot be replaced with a few clicks of a mouse.
The Irish motor industry needs to be wary of those who would lead them down the road travelled by Cazoo and Carvana.
The Babycham and Rolls Royce story
Readers of a certain age may well remember Babycham, which in the 60’s was the sophisticated drink for young women.
The Champagne Perry had very little in terms of a relationship with actual champagne but it proved to be an extraordinary success throughout the swinging 60’s.
According to legend, the makers promised their advertising agency chief a Rolls Royce if he could get sales up to a £1 million a year.
The challenge was accepted and when the target was met the Rolls Royce was produced to the creative genius who made a glorified lemonade into a marketing success.
THIEVES FORGOT TO CHARGE TESLA
When thieves struck at a store in Buford USA they loaded up their car and took off into the night with their stolen goods.
Witnesses couldn’t give much detail other than that they were driving a Tesla.
Quick thinking police officers had a hunch that the thieves might need to charge up so they staked out the nearest Tesla charge point and within an hour they nabbed the bad guys as
they sat patiently waiting for the car to charge.
Perhaps the moral of the story is that thieves should stick to less environmentally friendly petrol cars for the moment.

VOLKSWAGEN ID.5
By BREDA CORRIGAN www.motoringmatters.iecapability. A terrific energy recuperation system in the ID.5 makes it easy and fuss-free to extend the range of the battery.
For instance, when the driver approaches a slower moving vehicle, the ID.5 can automatically use the slowing effect of regenerative braking to align with the vehicle in front. Additionally, there is a selectable ‘B’ mode which increases braking effect in normal driving.
THE STYLE-CONSCIOUS SUV
Following on from the launch of the hugely-successful, fully-electric ID.3 and ID.4, Volkswagen has introduced the sleek and sporty ID.5, which is a fully electric SUV with coupe styling. The ID.5 is built on the same platform as the ID.4, the Audi Q4 Sportback e-Tron and the Skoda Envaq Coupe SUV, but unlike these cars, the ID.5 is not available with a smaller battery: the only option is a sizeable 77kWh unit that provides a WLTP battery range of up to 530km. The ID.5 can be charged from 0-100% via a wallbox charger in seven and a half hours, with a 5-80% charge at a DC fast charge station taking just 29 minutes.
SPORT
EXTERIOR DESIGN
The overall exterior design of the ID.5 doesn’t deviate all that much from the ID.4. Indeed, from some angles it might not be obvious to spot the new rear-end
treatment , featuring redesigned C-pillars, a sloping roof line and a new boot lid incorporating a rear wing.
Inside the ID.5, the interior closely resembles that of the ID.4,
albeit with some nicer trim element s to reflect the ID.5’s position in Volkswagen’s fullyelectric car line-up.
The modern and uncluttered cabin features t wo digital screens
mounted on the dashboard that give access to the various onboard functions.
The 12.0-inch infotainment screen has sharp graphics and is responsive to the touch, and it offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat nav, DAB radio and over-the-air update capabilities. There is also a wireless smartphone charger fitted to all trims.
The cabin is spacious with
plenty of head and leg room for all occupants, while the seating is comfortable and supportive too.
Rear passenger space is virtually unchanged from the ID.4, so there is space for up to five adults, and the boot is actually slightly larger, holding up to 1,561litres when the rear seats are folded.
TRIM & DRIVETRAIN OPTIONS
Trim levels available in the new ID.5 comprise of Business, Style, Family, Tech and Max which come in rear-wheel drive guise, and GTX, GTX Business and GTX Max which benefit from all-wheel drive
As is the case with its ID.3 and ID.4 siblings, the gear selector in the ID.5 is situated to the right hand side of the steering wheel and it is engaged by simply twisting the selector forwards or backwards to choose the direction of travel.
Key standard features from entry-level ID.5 Business trim include 19-inch ‘Hamar’ alloy wheels, LED Matrix headlights (with automatic headlight control, Dynamic Light Assist and iQ. Light), LED tail lights, exterior surround lighting with unique puddle light design, black roof, rear spoiler, centre console with armrest, carpet mats made from recycled material, 12-inch ‘Discover Pro’ Navigation System, wireless smartphone charging,
tinted rear windows, Adaptive Cruise Control with speed limiter, We Connect Plus, front & rear parking sensors, Driving Profile Selection, Natural Voice Control, noise and heat insulating windscreen, Air Care Climatronic air conditioning with enhanced air filter, multiple airbags, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems.
TEST CAR DETAILS
My ID.5 Tech test car was finished in beautiful blue metallic paintwork that was complimented by sporty 19-inch ‘Hamar’ alloy wheels. Buyers looking for even more visual drama can upgrade to 20 or 21inch alloy wheels, with a host of other optional extras available for ultimate personalisation.
With 204hp and 310Nm of torque available from the get-go,
the car can accelerate from 0-100km/h in as little as 8.4seconds.
It is impressively smooth and refined to drive, particularly at high speeds on a motorway, and there is always plenty of power in reserve for overtaking slowermoving traffic with confidence.
There is plenty of grip on twisty roads, the steering is well weighted and body movements are controlled with great precision. Ride comfort is excellent, with occupants adequately insulated from the outside world.
All trim variants come with a host of standard comfort, convenience, safety and infotainment systems, with my Tech test car also benefitting from an augmented reality head-up display, 450W output speakers with subwoofer, sensor-
controlled Easy Open & Close boot lid, Trained Parking, Area View overhead camera incorporating a reversing camera, and Travel Assist with Swarm Data, along with Emergency Assist and Side Assist safety features.
VERDICT AND PRICING
With its stylish coupé looks, excellent interior space, smooth acceleration, high driving position and an impressive range, the new VW ID.5 is a very commendable car in every respect.
Pricing for the ID.5 (174hp) starts at €62,695 (inclusive of delivery-related costs), with the 204hp version priced from €64,790. A 3-year/90,000km manufacturers’ warranty comes as standard, along with an 8year/160,000km battery warranty for total peace of mind motoring.
Dad smashes son’s BMW to stop him driving
We all want to stop drink driving but a Spanish father took it more seriously than most.
When he saw that his 32-year-old son was definitely not fit to drive, the man demanded the keys. The drink driving son wasn’t having any of it
and was insistent on driving. Dad then decided that he had to take action, and attacked the car. The result was that the car was left with broken windows and certainly couldn’t be driven. While Dad always knows best it may have taken a while for that family row to be settled.
Arare 1908 Harley Davidson became the most expensive motorcycle ever sold at auction in the United States. The 115-yearold Strap Tank motorcycle – named after its oil and fuel tanks, which are attached to the frame with nickel straps – is believed to be one of only 12 models still remaining.
The auctioneers noted that the bike, which had been expertly restored and still had the original tank, wheels, engine belt pulley, seat cover and muffler sleeve, was exceptionally rare. The bike, which sold for $875,000 before fees, was reportedly found intact in a Wisconsin barn by David Uihlein in 1941, which he kept in his possession for 66 years.
DRINK DRIVE CARS SENT TO UKRAINE
We are all doing what we can to support the people of Ukraine but the Latvian authorities have taken an unusual step to support the war effort.
In their battle against drink drivers, Latvia has
introduced new legislation that allows them to seize the cars of drunk drivers.
Those cars are then shipped to Ukraine where they are made available for emergency service workers and to transport military to the front lines.
Most expensive motorbike ever sold achieves $875,000

Porsche hooks up Porsche trailer
If you are a Porsche driver in Ireland you are probably not short of a few quid.
So, you’ll probably be well able to afford the $55,000 that is being asked for this unique trailer/caravan that Porsche have developed with an Airstream to allow you spend more time outdoors.
While the little home on wheels comes complete with bed, kitchenette and storage, it hardly matches the image that luxury car drivers would want to portray. Somehow, it looks unlikely that this Porsche is going to be a great seller in Ireland.
Best of roads and boating…The Amphicar
It seems obvious that a car that could go on water as well as on the road was going to be a certain sales success.
That’s what inspired the German engineer Hans Trippel to develop the Amphicar.
His plan was that, although it cost twice the price of a
MORE ELECTRIC TAXIS THAN DIESEL
Volkswagen Beetle, it would appeal to a driver who wanted both a boat and a car.
The first production models hit the road/water in 1961 and although it was received with curiosity, it never achieved the hoped for sales of 20,000 units a year.
In fact only less than 4,000
were ever produced. Almost all of which went to the USA.
One of the reasons it failed was the poor road performance, taking a lifetime 43 seconds to
reach 60 mph. There are now very few survivors and prices for those are rising fast.
There are now more LEVC (London Electric Vehicle Company) TX electric taxis on the streets of London than traditional diesel.
As the capital’s transition to a clean, green EV black cab fleet continues to accelerate EV cabs have become more popular.
Highlighting the transition away from fossil fuel, LEVC’s TX taxi - the world’s most advanced electric taxi - now represents more than 40% of official black cabs, with over 6,000 vehicles operating in the city.
As sales continue to increase, so does the positive contribution LEVC’s TX is making to air quality.
Powered by its revolutionary eCity technology, LEVC’s electric TX taxi has travelled more than 534 million miles globally and prevented 162,000 tonnes of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere, since it was introduced in 2018.
Although we have yet to see such dramatic transformation of the Irish Taxi fleet, there are certainly traditional electric models being used in our cities.

GOWAN AUTO CONSOLIDATES 9 MAJOR MOTOR BRANDS AT CITYWEST HQ
Sporting its new company name and fresh brand identity, a new state-of-the-art headquarters in Dublin's Citywest has been unveiled by Gowan Auto, following the consolidation of 9 major motor brands and the completion of a phased relocation of 129 staff.
To support its strategic vision and ambitions, Gowan Auto, the exclusive importer, and distributor of Alfa Romeo, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Fiat Professional, Honda, Jeep, Opel, and Peugeot in the Republic of Ireland, has united its suite of car brands, teams and expertise and presented its expansive office space, to include a 110,000sq ft parts warehouse, a contemporary training academy, and an extensive marketing showroom.
Gowan Auto, a member of the family-owned holding company, the Gowan Group, has made a significant commercial investment in the new Citywest premises, to future-proof the business and to meet its dealer partners' sales, parts, technical and aftersales needs, more readily.
Equipped with 26 electric vehicle chargers, 123 car parking spaces, 7 meeting rooms, and 2 training classrooms, the extensive new facilities have also seen the parts warehousing capacity significantly increase for the brands.
The 110,000 sq ft warehouse holds increased volumes of stock to ensure rapid parts availability for dealers, with up to 3 times daily deliveries direct to dealers.
The Gowan Academy is a contemporary training facility, offering Gowan Auto dealers access to dedicated technical, sales, finance, marketing, and digital expertise, to enable indepth training across all facets of the business.
The new marketing showroom, the Gowan Gallery, is a multi-purpose event space that has been designed for each brand to hold conferences, events and launches, and to welcome dealers and fleet guests.
The introduction of shared services across the brands has ensured greater efficiencies, with the dealer networks now accessing centralised IT support, enhanced customer care, warranty, technical, parts, and finance teams.
Michael Dwan, Gowan Group Managing Director, said: "Backed by 53 years of steadfast motor industry expertise, the Gowan Auto rebrand and relocation are cornerstones to our clear vision for achieving success, together with our collective car brands,
nationwide dealer networks, fleet, lease and car rental partners, and our suppliers. This transformation is part of our commitment to support our expanded brand portfolio, and to continuously enhance our services to our dealer networks, our end-
The service due message has come on after only 12,000km since the last service on my 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0D, yet the owner’s manual says it is only due every 34,000km.
AliceYou are correct that the service interval on a 2018 2.0 diesel Discovery Sport is 34,000km, however, Land Rover do state that it is a maximum of 34,000km or 24 months, whichever comes first. How long has it been since your last service, if it has taken you 2 years to cover those 12,000kms then the message may be on as the service interval has been reached by time.
Our expert BRIAN FAHEY is here to answer all of your car-related questions, from technical issues to advice on buying your next car. No question is too big or too small for our experts.
With over 40 years of combined experience in the Irish Motor Trade, we want to share our expertise with you, our readers, to improve your motoring knowledge and to give you the confidence in making your next motoring decision, be that, changing a bulb yourself, figuring out what that noise is, or why that warning light is on, to having all the right questions and answers when dealing with garages, mechanics and salespeople.
On many modern cars, diesels especially, service intervals are governed by a self-monitoring system which can ask for the service or oil change well before you may expect it to. The mileages given by manufacturers of these cars are only maximum mileages and are usually only reached with a particular type of driving, in real world driving conditions, they are rarely ever met.
If a car does regular short trips, it is common for them to require servicing or oil changes more regularly. This has got to do with oil dilution and is a result of the engine not getting fully up to operating temperature on a drive, causing the oil to be diluted at a faster rate than if the car does mostly longer trips, where it gets fully up to temperature allowing the oil to dissipate the fuel that it has been diluted with. This oil dilution is a normal feature of modern diesels and certain engines seem to be more sensitive to it, including the Land Rover 2.0 diesel.
BrianI regularly get a warning on the dash on my 2016 Opel Astra that the rear lights are not working. Each time it is the left rear brake light that is not working. I have replaced the bulb 3 times in the last 2 months, and it has now happened again. When I replace the bulb, it works ok for a while but doesn’t last very long. Am I being sold inferior quality bulbs or is there a bigger issue causing this.

There is a known fault with the rear lights on Opel Astra’s manufactured between 2016 – 2018, and by the sounds of it, this may be the issue you are having. The issue relates to a faulty connection between the bulb holder and the wiring connector that plugs into it.
Opel are aware of this and seem to be covering the cost of the repairs under warranty, provided the mileage is below 100,000 miles / 160,000 km’s. Contact your nearest Opel dealer and tell them the issue you are having and ask if it will be covered under warranty.
BrianMy 2009 Toyota Land Cruiser vibrates and shudders when I make a tight turn, it seems to be more noticeable after a long drive. Any advice or idea’s as to what might be causing this.
BarryThere are a number of possible causes for a vibration or shudder when making tight manoeuvres.
Firstly, I would have the wheel alignment & suspension checked on your car, or at least check your tyres for uneven wear, as that can be a sign of wheel alignment being out of adjustment or play somewhere in the suspension. A worn CV joint is one possible cause and is easily checked with the car on a ramp or jacked up off the ground.
As your Land Cruiser is 4-wheel drive, it has a transfer gearbox which distributes the drive to all 4 wheels. Toyota recommend changing the oil in the transfer box every 40,000km – 80,000km depending on what exact model it is. So, if this oil has not been changed recently, it may be worth having it changed, and I would recommend changing the differential oils while you are at it too. You might be lucky and fresh oils could eliminate or reduce the shuddering in your car.
If none of the above work, unfortunately you could be looking at a mechanical issue with the transfer box or a differential, both of which can be expensive to repair. Brian

LEWIS HAMILTON AND HIS JEWELLERY
The F1 legend is well-known for his daring on the track but is also equally a risk taker when it comes to his appearance. His body is covered in ink and he is especially fond of his facial jewellery.
The good news for motorsport fans is that
The Purosangue - A Ferrari SUV
after a lot of controversy the sport’s authorities have decided that he is allowed to keep his nose stud while racing.
Apparently it would be a greater risk to remove it than leave it in place while he is on the track.
Somebody copied our land cruiser
Chinese manufacturers are well known for taking design inspiration from existing Western cars.
Normally that can be taken as a form of design flattery but Kuluze have taken the use of another design to another level.
Clearly this little car has taken more than just a little design style from the Toyota Land Cruiser.
If somebody offers to sell you a Chinese “ Land Cruiser” be careful that you are getting the real deal not a mini version.
Keeping the neighbours happy
When Larry Lee took delivery of his brand new Corvette Stingray he was thrilled with it.
He simply loved the sound of the rumbling V8 as his dream car burst into life.
What he hadn’t reckoned was on the reactions of his suburban American neighbours. They seemed to value getting a bit of sleep and a quiet life.
Realising that he had to do something to keep the neighbours happy Lee came up with an ingenious solution. He built on an extra exhaust section that simply sticks on the his roaring muffler. In the
morning he attaches it to the car and when he clears the neighbourhood he stops and

The Bronco is being advertised by buyers with a $20k premium as soon as they take delivery.
In order to halt this practice Ford dealers are now asking customers to sign an agreement on purchase that they will agree not resell the car unless back to the dealer.

NEW KIA 7 SEATER ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Irish families have always tended to be a little larger than some of our neighbouring countries.
Combining that with more emphasis being put on “health and safety” means everyone in the car needs their own seat.
In spite of need, there has always been a shortage of cars that will fit the larger family.
Kia have disclosed details of a new 7 seater electric vehicle.
The all electric EV9 will cover up to 540kms on a full charge and will seat even the biggest
families.
While details and pricing of a version in Ireland are not yet available it may not appeal to every family, as it is likely to be priced as a luxury vehicle, comparable to an Audi E-tron!
The blind man who invented cruise control
We are all getting used to using cruise control as most modern cars are now coming with it as standard.
However few of us ever give a thought to who invented this essential driving tool.
The inventor, Ralph Teetor, was born in Indiana USA in 1890 and following an accident as a child he lost his sight.
Even before his accident the young boy had developed a great interest in everything engineering and how things worked.
While most kids would have retreated behind their blindness, Teetor simply developed his sense of touch.
His knowledge of mechanics continued and he graduated as an engineer with an exceptional feel for everything he worked on.
Ralphs lawyer described to how he would like to drive at the speed limit without thinking about it.
Teetor took up the challenge and by 1950 he had patented a device for what we would now call cruise control.
Charging on the street
One of the problems facing motorists who do not have a driveway at home is that leaving a charging cable across the path is a tripping hazard.
A UK based company called Kerbo Charge has come up with what they believe is the answer.
By cutting a small channel into the footpath and inserting a plastic strip, the path maintains its flat condition.
The charging cable can then be inserted into the channel and then removed like a ZIP on a zip lock bag.
The channel measures 32mm deep and 39mm wide, and also features a hinged lid.
BYD will not build European factory in UK
BYD is a name that we are
not yet fully familiar with here in Ireland.
However, as the largest manufacturer of electric and hybrid cars in the world we won’t have to wait long for the arrival of these Chinese cars.
The business has the backing of billionaire investor and philanthropist Warren Buffet, who tends to gets most things right.
When BYD went searching for
a site to make their cars in Europe, the UK authorities were quick to beat a path to their door.
The answer was a resounding NO.
Michael Shu, BYD’s European president said: “To open a factory is a decision for decades. Without Brexit, maybe. But after Brexit, we don’t understand what happened.”
Inscrutable as ever, the Chinese got it straight away.
Tesla unlocked and driven away by wrong owner
When Canadian Rajesh
Randev was rushing to collect his kids from school he used the app on his phone to open his parked Tesla and drive away.
As he was on the road he noticed that although it was the same colour as his car, it did not appear to feel quite the same as
his usual drive.
It was only after he stopped the car and did the school run that he noticed he was driving an entirely different car.
It appears that an identical model Tesla was parked beside him in the car park and when he used the app, the wrong car opened and allowed him to drive

Fortunately he was able to contact the rightful owner and return the car.
Rajesh says he has since contacted Tesla for an explanation, however, as Elon Musk appears to have fired his PR team he may be left waiting a while!
Watch out for birds!
It’s that time of year when birds are at their most active, building nests and settling in trees.
Watch out where you park your precious drive or you could end up like this Porsche owner who thought his shiny car was safe under a tree.
All it takes is one really bad day and you could be paying the price for a long time to come!
Morris vans were a feature of the UK industry for many years and they are about to make a comeback.
A start-up company, Morris Commercials, is planning to produce a range of electric vans and pickups for delivery early next year.
The vans will have a very retro look, drawing their design inspiration from the commercials of yesteryear, although they will be fully equipped for 21st century work.
The makers claim the vans will have a range of 250 miles.
ONE MILLION MILE HONDA ACCORD
When US resident Justin Kilmer took delivery of his new Honda Accord in 2003 he was hopeful that his car would give him lots of trouble free motoring.
Justin never thought he would still be driving his Honda Accord as the mileage passed the one million mile mark.
For the first 12 years, the car served as the familys daily drive, but in 2015 Justin’s career changed and so did his annual mileage.
As a medical courier he started to clock up over 100k miles a year!
While Justin thought about

There is a radio and a heater. Flat-out it can reach a stunning 24mph.
Apparently it can be yours for only a few thousand!
changing his car, the Honda just kept on going.
Perhaps the most impressive thing is that the car managed to get to that milestone while still using its original 3.0L V6 engine. The cars manual transmission was changed at around 500,000 miles.
Kilmer says it has been running on only five cylinders for 130,000 km.
Justin Kilmer’s family and friends joined him at Smoky Mountain National Park to celebrate the occasion.
As for his next car, he won’t say, as the Honda still keeps on motoring!
We certainly wouldn’t want to risk our lives in one but you can have a look on YouTube if you really want to find out more.

Bentley Cube a sign of the future
Things have come a long way since motorists were asked to buy their new cars in draughty sheds, posing as car showrooms.
Every main dealer now offers a professional and comfortable premises to allow customers to experience all the benefits of a professional service when buying.
In recent years manufacturers have been demanding that sales outlets set even higher standards.
The latest Bentley showrooms,
located in Seoul, Korea brings things to an entirely different level.
As well as a fully fitted bar, the building devotes a floor to the sound system options that are available in the cars.
Customers can plan their colours and trim while experiencing studio quality sound systems in luxurious lounges.
Bentley seems to believe that all this expense is worthwhile having sold 775 of their luxury cars in Korea last year.

New Citroën C5 Aircross
Experience Ultimate Comfort
Citroën has launched the facelifted C5 Aircross SUV which has undergone significant design enhancements as part of the product refresh.
The new C5 Aircross offers an imposing and rugged design thanks to the newly designed front end which incorporates a new design language and interpretation of the brand logo. Significant changes have likewise been made to the rear taillight design, and lavish new interior seating also enhances the aesthetic appeal of this vehicle.
The facelifted version of this C-segment SUV, which has been the best-selling Citroën passenger car in Ireland since 2020, is available with a choice of petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) petrol/electric versions.
By BREDA CORRIGAN www.motoringmatters.ieSTRIKING NEW DESIGN
At first glance the exterior changes to the front end are evident. The new C5 Aircross proudly displays a larger chevron logo set in a black lacquer with chrome surrounds. This logo rests on a newly designed grille that features a chrome and piano black combination, and sits independently from the daytime running lights to offer a more modern and imposing look.
This design is further complimented by the new styling
of the air intake area which visually widens the front end, echoing the style of the new C4 and C5 X.
The facelifted C5 Aircross is available in 6 different colour options including the new Eclipse Blue option, which is a deep blue colour that can change to black depending on the external light exposure.
Inside the cabin of the new C5 Aircross, a new 10” touchscreen forms the focal point of a more modern passenger compartment.
This new, larger screen improves ergonomics while the air vents are now located below the screen to ensure a higher reading position.
In addition, the fully customisable 12.3” digital display provides all essential and customisable information directly in the driver’s eye-line ensuring optimal road visibility at all times.
The New C5 Aircross is equipped with the latest generation of Citroën Advanced Comfort® seats offering high-
density foam in the core of the seat, with an extra 15mm layer of memory foam featuring a specific design to resist sagging over time.
TRIM OPTIONS
The new C5 Aircross is available in entry-level ‘Feel Pack’, mid-spec ‘Flair’, and rangetopping ‘C-Series Edition’ trim levels, all of which benefit from a general uplift in overall build quality and cabin comfort.
Citroën is particularly proud to
present the ‘C-Series’ special edition, as it offers buyers unprecedented customisation options to further enhance the cars’ distinctive design.
The C-Series introduces a new Anodised Bronze colour pack, with coloured inserts on the side Airbump™ and bumper scoops, while on the front wings, a special embossed ‘C-Series’ badge emphasises the design of this special edition.
PROGRESSIVE HYDRAULIC CUSHION SUSPENSION
The new C5 Aircross retains characteristics that make it stand out in its segment, contributing to an overall experience focused on well-being and ease of use.
The ‘Progressive Hydraulic Cushions’ suspension (exclusive to Citroën) enhances absorption of imperfections in the road and ensures that passengers travel in absolute comfort, with a real “flying carpet” effect.
The C5 Aircross is the only
SUV in the segment to offer three individual sliding, reclining and retractable rear seats, allowing MPV modularity in true SUV style.
A class-leading boot capacity of up to 720-litres behind the rear seats in the petrol and diesel versions (up to 600-litres in the PHEV variant) ensures that a family of five can travel in ultimate comfort with ample space for their luggage in the boot. With the rear seats folded flat, up to 1,630-litres of useful cargo space becomes instantly available when required.
Special attention has been paid to the acoustic characteristics of the laminated front windows to amplify the cocoon effect within the car, and this proves very effective on the move.
PETROL, DIESEL OR PLUG-IN HYBRID
The petrol and diesel engine offerings in the new C5 Aircross both have a power output of 130PS, with the option of a sixspeed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission with both engines.
The PHEV version delivers 225PS and is capable of driving up to 55km in full electric mode, with power delivered to the cars’ front wheels via an eight-speed (é-EAT8) transmission.
The PHEV version also benefits from a range of online connected services to facilitate delayed charging via a smartphone app and cabin preconditioning.
Charging is fast, with a full charge completed in less than two hours from a standard wall-
box connection. Alternatively, the battery can be charged via a 3-pin domestic socket in around seven hours.

Best selling cars around the world
With a little over 100,000 cars sold in Ireland last year we had a look at best selling cars around the world. Individual models sell more in some markets than the entire Irish market.

seat adjustment, Highway Driver Assist, hands-free tailgate with foot operated functionality, and a panoramic glass sunroof with electric interior blind.
There is excellent headroom both front and rear, and rear seat occupants also benefit from plentiful leg and knee space behind the front seats.
Wide opening rear doors make it particularly easy to get in and out, and this is a feature that parents of small children will love.
The new C5 Aircross PHEV offers optimum performance thanks to the electric motor which boosts the internal combustion engine, for a cumulative power output of 225PS, and an impressive 360Nm of torque. This enables a 0-100km/h sprint to be completed
in just 8.7-seconds, on the way to a top speed of 195km/h (where permitted).
The ë-EAT8 electrified 8-speed automatic transmission optimises gear shifts for a supremelysmooth and pleasurable drive, while the Brake (B) regenerative braking mode boosts the recovery of energy available when braking and decelerating.
A drive mode selector is ideally located on the central console, and it enables drivers to choose between Electric, Hybrid and Sport modes to suit their individual driving style.
In electric mode, the C5 Aircross PHEV provides a silent, vibration-free and environmentally-respectful drive with zero CO2 emissions. With as little as 1.3-litres of petrol being used for every 100km driven on a
WLTP combined driving cycle, the new C5 Aircross PHEV should prove very cost-effective to live with, and an annual road tax disc is just €140.
VERDICT, PRICING & WARRANTY
The new Citroën C5 Aircross is a highly commendable 5-seat family-focused SUV that combines practicality, versatility, supreme comfort and an effortless driving experience, with a distinctive style that stands out from the crowd.
Pricing starts at €39,830 for the ‘Feel Pack’ PureTech 130PS, with my test car specification priced from €49,700 (ex-delivery). All Citroën passenger cars come with a 5-year manufacturers’ warranty as standard, along with a 3-year roadside assistance package.
Ford Sierra Cosworth Sells for almost £600k
Nostalgia rules when it comes to putting a value on those cars that were the icons of our youth.
Lots of MotorMarket readers may have lusted over a Sierra Cosworth when they were younger. While the Sierra was an everyday car, the Cosworth was the ultimate dream car of the day.
When this 1987 model went to auction recently it
was clear it would be a record breaker, as it had only covered 5,192 miles and had been kept in pristine condition.
Bidding was fast and furious until the hammer finally fell at an incredible £596,250!
Clearly somebody wanted to relive their youth and were prepared for the privilege of being transported back in time.
NEW RANGE ROVER PHEV
The power of luxury
At first glance, the 2023 Range Rover may look familiar, but it is all new, and it comes with the promise of even greater refinement, interior comfort and driver appeal than ever before.
It sits on new mechanical underpinnings, and it comes with a fresh line-up of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, all of which use either mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology, with an all-electric Range Rover due to be launched next year.
Trim variants in the new Range Rover consist of SE, HSE, Autobiography and SV – all of which can be personalised with a host of optional features for ultimate individualisation.
TWO WHEELBASE OPTIONS
The new Range Rover is available in two different lengths. The standard-wheelbase (SWB) version measures in at just over five metres in length, while the long-wheelbase (LWB) version has an extra 200mm between the front and rear axles to provide extra room inside the sumptuous cabin.
Interestingly, the Range Rover LWB is available with the option of seven seats for the very first time in the Range Rover’s fifty-three year history.
Boot space in the SWB version measures in at a cavernous 818litres behind the rear seats, with up to 1,841-litres on offer when the
rear seats are electrically folded.
EMOTIONAL ENGAGEMENT
The Range Rover’s strong and beautifully sculpted body, with its expansive surfaces and flushfitting door handles, speaks volumes in terms of modernity, while the hidden-until-lit tail lights and precise detailing take the design philosophy to new levels of emotional engagement.
The new Range Rover features a sumptuous and sophisticated interior, underpinned by its impeccable reductive nature, supreme luxury, tactile materials and an intuitive approach to relevant technology, ensuring that no detail has been overlooked in
the process.
Elegant, refined surfaces and the finest materials create a calm sanctuary, combining luxury and wellbeing. The choice of sustainable and contemporary technical fabrics, along with natural wood veneers, are embraced with the highest level of precision.

By DECLAN GLYNN www.motoringmatters.ieWindsor leather seats. The supremely refined and powerful petrol engine works in union with the electric motor to produce 440PS and 620Nm of torque, and this allows for a 0-100km/h sprint in just 6.0seconds.
With active air suspension as standard, the Range Rover feels exceptionally well controlled and smooth, irrespective of the road surface. With the exception of some wind noise at motorway speeds, the cabin is an exceptionally quiet place to be.
The Range Rover’s active antiroll bar system helps to limit body lean through corners, and the accurate and precise steering set-up provides terrific feedback to the driver in all circumstances. Ingeniously, the Range Rover’s standard four-wheel steering system gives the substantiallyproportioned SUV a turning circle to match that of a medium-size family car, and this is of huge help when negotiating tight parking spaces and narrow city streets.
At high speeds, the rear wheels move in the same direction as the front wheels to improve stability, but at low speeds they move the opposite way, reducing the turning circle to less than 11-metres.
The Range Rover has all rivals beaten when it comes to venturing off the beaten track. All versions are all-wheel drive with a low-ratio gearbox, making it an incredibly capable off-roader.
The body stands a lofty
295mm off the ground but can be raised an extra 145mm in the highest of the suspension’s four settings. It also has high approach and departure angles and it can wade through water that's up to 900mm deep.
Additionally, a terrific camera system makes off-road driving an easier task than ever before.
It’s smooth and silent in pure electric mode and transitions seamlessly to petrol power when needed with plenty of pace on offer – it is an incredibly impressive plug-in hybrid option.
By combining a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor for optimal efficiency and performance, the PHEV powertrain delivers the best of both technologies.
The Range Rover PHEV offers the longest official electric-only range available on a luxury SUV –up to 113kms. The 32.8kWh battery can be fully charged (0-100%) in 5 hours via a 7kW wallbox charger, with a 10-80% charge taking just 40 minutes at a 50kW
DC public charge point.
CONCLUSION & PRICING
The original Range Rover was the first luxury SUV of its kind when it arrived in 1970, and every new generation since then has helped transform the world of refined motoring.
Thanks to its compelling design and greater levels of elegance, exclusivity and luxury, the all-new Range Rover builds on that incomparable achievement, and it is still the leader in the luxury SUV market segment.
This is the most desirable Range Rover ever created, and its unparalleled presence and supreme stature, along with its impressive off-road ability, will surely impress even the most demanding of drivers.
Pricing for the new Range Rover PHEV starts at €138,085 (exdelivery), with my review car specification priced from €152,250.
