his new Mondeo is certainly a good looking car. I was surprised by the number of people who came over to have a look at it and then commented very favourably on its looks and styling. The test car was finished and equipped to the Titanium specification, so it was fitted out to a very luxurious standard. Included in the standard equipment were 17” alloy

wheels, front fog lamps, dual zone climate control, heated windscreen, lane keeping aid, automatic lights and wipers, electrically adjustable and automatically folding exterior rear view mirrors, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, ambient lighting, keyless start, an 8” touch screen and Ford’s SYNC 2 electronic location device. To further extend its luxurious appeal, the test car was fitted with several optional extras like that panoramic glass roof, heated front seats and steering wheel, adaptive headlamps to aid night time driving, partial leather upholstery and a body kit. While these extras do add €5,795 to the price, the Mondeo 1.5 EcoBoost is still very competitive for a car of its size and luxurious standard.

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to test both the 1.6 and the 2.0 litre diesel versions of the Mondeo, so I was very keen to see how the 1.5 EcoBoost petrol model compared in both performance and fuel consumption. When it comes to performance, speed wise, the petrol model has the edge, compared to the 1.6 diesel. Its top speed is 222 kph (137 mph), with 0-100 kph in 9.2 seconds. The 1.6 diesel delivers 192 kph (119 mph) and 12.1 seconds. The 2.0 diesel has a top speed of 215 kph (133 mph) with 0-100 kph in 9.3 seconds. Exhaust emissions are 134 gm/km for the 1.5 EcoBoost, 109 gm/km for the 1.6 diesel and 115 gm/km for the 2.0 diesel. This puts the 1.5 EcoBoost at a disadvantage when it comes to Irish road tax at the current rates, with an

annual charge of €280 , compared to €190 for the 1.6 diesel and €200 for the 2.0 diesel. Exhaust emissions are also an indication of fuel consumption, which by EU Testing Standards are 48 mpg (5.8 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle for the 1.5 EcoBoost, 67 mpg (4.2 lt/100 km) for the 1.6 diesel and 65 mph (4.3 lt/100 km) for the 2.0 diesel. Thus from a cost of operating point of view the diesels have an advantage. From a driving point of view, the 1.5 EcoBoost was pleasure all the way. The performance is smooth, silent and effortless. The electrically power assisted steering is geared to give 2.6 turns from lock to lock. Parking is greatly assisted by the front and rear parking sensors. The ride and roadholding was excellent over all the roads I used. The gearchange is likewise smooth and positive. Driving comfort is greatly enhanced by the reach and height adjustable steering wheel and the electrically adjustable driver’s seat. The rear seat backrest is divided 60/40 in the backrest and the centre section includes a folding armrest that has a small storage tray and two cupholders. Normal luggage space, when all five seats are in use is 0.541 cubic metres. This can be expanded to 1.437 cubic metres when only two seats are needed

and you load to the roof. A Spacesaver spare wheel and the tools are accommodated in a compartment below the luggage floor. If more space is needed the Mondeo can carry up to 75 kg in a suitable container on the roof, or it can tow braked trailers/caravans of up to 1250 kg and unbraked trailers of up to 740 kg. The instruments and driving controls are all laid out for comfort and ease of use whilst driving. The binnacle ahead of the driver contains two large analogue dials, with white lettering on a black background. The tachometer is on the left and the speedometer on the right. In the lower section of the speedometer there is a blue fuel level gauge. Above it there is an image of a car that is used to facilitate the lane departure

warning, traffic sign recognition and other similar items, as well as an indicator showing the mileage to empty, based on the average fuel consumption. The engine temperature gauge is in the lower section of the tachometer, while above there is a digital information panel with a red boundary fence. This gives safety related information like a door not properly closed, etc. There is a further digital information panel between the two round analogue dials. Below the right hand horizontal arm of the steering wheel there are controls for the telephone and audio related functions, while under the left hand horizontal there are cruise control selectors. The touch screen in the centre of the facia, below the two

central air vents, gives a variety of information like the temperatures selected for the climate control, audio related information, direction of travel and navigation maps etc. The panel below it has selectors for the audio system as well as the climate control, windscreen demisting and similar operations. The driver’s door has controls for the central locking and unlocking, while on the door armrest there are controls for the four electric windows and the operation and adjustment of the two exterior rear view mirrors. The left hand stalk under the steering wheel operates the direction indicators, headlamp flashers and low/high beam for the headlamps. The right hand stalk operates the wipers and washers.
