t is easy to see why the Ford Focus is the best selling car in many major world markets like Europe and China. It has stylish good looks, it is spacious and comfortable inside, it rides and handles well and it offers attractive levels of fuel consumption. Bright red is my favourite colour for cars, so this Focus got off to a good start with me. To add to its attraction, Ford offer a wide choice of petrol or diesel power with the Focus. The test car was fitted with a 1560 cc turbocharged, direct injection diesel engine, fitted with stop/start as standard. It has a power output of 70 kW @ 3,600 rpm with 230 Nm between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm. It drives the front wheels through a six speed manual gearbox. This level of power output enables it to have a top speed of 180 kph (111 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 12.5 seconds. While that may not be in boyracer territory, it is as well to remember that there are more performance orientated models in the Focus line-up, if that is what you

require. Of more interest to most family motorists would be its fuel consumption figures. Judged by the EU testing standards, which is a common level of comparison for all makes, this Focus delivers 55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, 76 mpg (3.7 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and 67 mpg (4.2 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. By the same standards its exhaust emissions are 109 gm/km, helped no doubt by the stop/start technology.

That positions it in Irish road tax band A2, with a current annual charge of 180 euro. The ride and roadholding were good over a wide variety of road surfaces.
