Convertible irst we had off-road vehicles, then they became known as 4x4s. That designation, however, was considered by the fashion conscious to indicate an on/off-road working vehicle, so the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) nomenclature was invented. Unfortunately the word Utility in the title, was also considered to be too working class, so SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) was applied by the more fashion conscious manufactures, to describe their vehicles in this segment of the market. When the Green Brigade took an objection to fashionable ladies driving these vehicles, as their daily transport, in an urban environment, some manufacturers invented the term Crossover to describe their participation in this lucrative market.

F

Now Nissan have come up with a further refinement on this theme. At the Los Angeles Auto Show recently, they introduced a convertible version of their Murano Crossover. Unlike the fixed top Murano, the drop top only has two passenger doors. We are told it will seat four adults comfortably, as well as accommodating their golf bags and luggage. No mention is made as to the construction of the folding top, so we have no indication as to whether it is fabric or a hard substance like metal, glassfibre or carbonfibre. It is due to be launched early in 2011, so perhaps us Europeans will see it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011.

he Seat Leon and the Volkswagen Golf share the same platform, so there are similarities in their wheelbases, suspension design and other mechanical components. In the case of the car on test, it also shares the same 1.6 TDI diesel engine as fitted to the Golf BlueMotion, so performance levels and fuel consumption is similar, but not the same, as the Leon is somewhat heavier than the Golf and has a different final drive ratio. The differences are, however, small. For example the Leon has a top speed of 186 kph (115 mph), whereas the Golf BlueMotion manages 190 kph (118 mph).

T ROAD TEST By KEVIN FENIX www.twincam.ie

Top speed fortunately is largely irrelevant as in both cases it is well above the national speed limits in most countries within the European Union. Both cars have a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 11.3 seconds, so in day to day driving their performances are practically identical. As it is that little bit heavier and has a slightly different final drive ratio, there is a small difference in the Seat’s fuel consumption and hence its exhaust emissions. Both cars, however, fall into Irish road tax

band A, which is good. While on the subject of fuel consumption, the Seat delivers 55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km) on the EU urban cycle, improving to 75 mpg (3.7 lt/100 km) on the extra urban cycle and averaging out at 67 mpg (4.2 lt/100 km) on the combined cycle. This gives exhaust emissions of 109 gm/km. During the course of this test, my driving included a lot of the normal daily commuting, besides local runs and motorway driving between Dublin and Belfast. In all

this variety the Leon was satisfyingly comfortable and an effortless performer. Indeed on the motorway you have to watch your speed carefully, as while it naturally drops off a little on a rise, it picks up very quickly on a down hill section, so before you know it you have gone from 120 kph (75 mph) to well over 140 kph (87 mph) and heading for 160 kph (100 mph). At a steady 100 kph (62 mph), the engine is ticking over at a very relaxed 2,000 rpm in 5th gear The instruments and driving controls are beautifully laid out for safe, comfortable and relaxed driving. The instrument binnacle, behind the steering wheel, contains three clear, easy to read, analogue dials. The smaller central dial is the tachometer. Like the other two it has white lettering on a black background. However, from 4,500 rpm to 6,000 rpm the lettering is in red, to indicate the engine is now in the upper limits of its speed range. The speedometer is on the right and has all white lettering,

but the black background also houses a series of important warning lights, which are illuminated in red, when the need arises. A matching circular dial on the left actually houses a variety of different information. In its top left it has an analogue fuel level gauge. One of the most satisfying things about driving this car, apart form its effortless performance, was observing how very, very slowly, the gauge moves from full towards empty. Indeed with over 500 km (300+ miles) on the trip recorder, the needle was still not quite at the half way mark, from the full side. Matching the fuel gauge on the right, was the engine temperature gauge. The lower half of this dial contained a variety of digital information: the time, distance to empty, total distance covered and the trip distance recorder. It is all beautifully presented making it easy to see at a glance, which all contributes to the absolute driving pleasure. contd. on page 6

Moving over to the centre console, below the two air vents, there is a row of push button switches. From the left these are for, windscreen demisting, feet warming, body warming, face warming, air recirculation and rear window demisting. Once again the symbols on each button are easy to see whilst driving. Immediately below is the airconditioning control panel, with two round knobs, to select the desired

temperature for each side of the car. Below this panel is another panel with the slot for the CD player and the controls for the audio system. On the left hand arm of the steering wheel there are further audio controls plus the switch for the Bluetooth telephone operations. The right hand arm has the switches for the cruise control. A rotary switch on the lower section of the facia, between the steering column

and the driver’s door, operates the lights and fog lamps, with a rotary switch alongside for headlamp levelling. Direction indicators, dipped and high beam selection and headlamp flashers are controlled by the left hand stalk and the wipers and washers by the right hand stalk, on either side of the steering column. Ahead of the gearlever, there is a useful open storage space, while in the central tunnel between the two front seats, there are two open

cupholders and a small panel, alongside the driver’s seat, that has the buttons for the central locking and unlocking, as well as a rotary control for adjusting the exterior rear view mirrors. These two mirrors fold in automatically when the car is locked and open out again when it is unlocked. It is all so well done, that I came to the conclusion, that the person who designed the interior of this car obviously enjoys driving himself/herself. The road test took in a variety of road surfaces, both in the Republic and in Northern Ireland. Generally speaking, the suspension gave a comfortable ride over most surfaces, although you could detect the rougher patches, when they cropped up from time to time. Combined with the comfortable ride, the roadholding was good, so you could drive in a relaxed manner, even when there were a series of twists and turns to be negotiated. This was helped by the positive feel of the steering, geared to give a comfort orientated three turns from lock to lock. contd. on page 6

The electromechanical power assistance, certainly made manoeuvring in tight spaces a lot easier, helped by the excellent visibility down each side provided by the exterior rear view mirrors. The two front seats are comfortable and well shaped. Both have adjustments for reach, height and backrest angle. The rear bench seat is divided 60/40 in the backrest, which can be folded down onto the seat cushions, to facilitate the carrying of awkward items of luggage. The two outer positions are equipped with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. The seat will accommodate three adults sitting abreast in reasonable comfort, but this does reduce the shoulder

room to uncomfortable levels. It can take three young teenagers without difficulty, or smaller children, provided only two require to be seated in child safety seats or on booster cushions. Normal luggage space, between the boot floor and the underside of the rear shelf, is 0.341 cubic metres. When the shelf is removed, the two seatbacks folded flat and you load to the roof, this increases to 1.165 cubic metres. The Leon can carry up to 75 kg in a suitable container on the roof if the need arises. However, a roofbox will destroy the airflow over the car and increase resistance, which increases fuel consumption, so if you need the extra capacity for family holidays, remember to remove the roofbox when you come

home. The Leon as tested, will also tow unbraked trailers of up to 660 kg or braked trailers/caravans of up to 1500 kg in weight. The problem with towing a trailer of any sort, braked or unbraked, is that the car, as tested, was fitted with a Spacesaver spare wheel, which is unsuitable for towing. So if you are going to tow, as many family cars do, from time to time, remember you need to get a proper, full size spare wheel and tyre. The well is certainly big enough to take it. If you do not want the extra weight of a proper spare wheel, for daily running around, you can always keep the full size spare wheel in a safe place at home, until it is needed and use the Spacesaver as your daily emergency response.

NEW MODEL REPORT

L

onger, lower and wider than the previous model, the new BMW 6 series convertible offers more space and comfort, especially for the two rear seat passengers. It is due to go on sale in the UK towards the end of March 2011, so perhaps prospective Irish buyers will have access to the new car sometime in April 2011. Initially it will be offered with the choice of two petrol engines, a V8 and an inline six cylinder. The 650i has a 4.4 litre V8, with twin turbochargers positioned in the V between the two banks of cylinders. It delivers 300 kW between 5,500 rpm and 6,400 rpm, with 600 Nm between 1,750 rpm and 4,500 rpm. That level of power and torque gives it a top speed electronically limited to 250 kph (155 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 5.0 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 26 mpg (10.8 lt/100 km), with exhaust emissions of 249 gm/km. This makes it an expensive proposition for Irish motorists, as that level of emissions, places it in band G, the highest level, which at

By KEVIN FENIX, www.twincam.ie

present pre-budget rates, demands an annual rip-off of €2100. The 640i is powered by a 3.0 litre six cylinder turbocharged engine. Its maximum power output is 235 kW @ 5,800 rpm with torque of 450 Nm between 1,300 rpm and 4,500 rpm. Its combined cycle fuel consumption is 35 mpg (8.0 lt/100 km). This gives emissions of 185 gm/km, putting this version into road tax band E, which at present rates has a much more acceptable annual demand of €630 euro. On the performance front it too is governed to a top speed of 250 kph (155 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 5.7 seconds. That small drop in performance, will never be noticed on the road, so it makes a much better proposition for prospective Irish motorists. The 640i comes as standard with automatic transmission incorporating stop/start technology. The roof opens at the touch of a button in around nineteen seconds, while closing takes around 24 seconds. Both operations can be accomplished on the move at speeds below 25 mph (40 kph).

NEW MODEL REPORT

By KEVIN FENIX, www.twincam.ie

olkswagen used the occasion of the Los Angeles Auto Show, to announce the latest version of the Eos coupe cabriolet. The most noticeable change is to the front end, which now features the wide horizontal grille design previously seen on the Passat, Polo and Sharan. The revised headlamps now feature LED technology for daytime running lights. To go with the new wider grille, there is a new front bumper with different airdams and fog light mountings. At the rear, revised tail lamps are similar to those fitted to the new Passat.

V

Inside the leather covered steering wheel has controls for several different operations. Sports design front seats are fitted and airconditioning is standard. As an option buyers may specify cool-leather upholstery, which reflects the sun’s rays, thus preventing it from becoming to hot in bright sunlight. Park Assist is available for both parallel and adjacent parking

manoeuvres. The folding hardtop includes a tilt and slide glass sun roof. It takes around 25 seconds to go from fully closed to fully open and vice versa. This operation can now be done remotely with the key fob, if the keyless entry option is fitted. When the roof is lowered the luggage capacity reduces to 0.205 cubic metres, whilst when it is

erected, it expands to 0.380 cubic metres. Initially the car will be available with three petrol engines and one diesel. Two of the petrol engines are based on the excellent 1.4 litre TSI unit, one delivering 90 kW and the other 118 kW. The third is a 2.0 litre TSI with an output of 155 kW. The diesel is a 2.0 litre TDI producing 104 kW. Later on in 2011 there will be

BlueMotion versions incorporating stop/start technology and brake energy regeneration, as standard. This latest Eos is expected on mainland European markets early in 2011, with the UK and presumably Irish market coming on stream from March onwards. However, it is expected that the US will be its biggest selling market.

GENERAL INTEREST REPORT

By KEVIN FENIX, www.twincam.ie

Camaro goes top less A ccording to General Motors, the Chevrolet Camaro is now the best selling coupe in its segment of the US market. The company has now added a convertible to the model range. It will be built in Canada and goes into production in January 2011. The plan is to sell it on European markets, as well as the North American market and cars for Europe are expected to arrive during 2011. The only problem for Irish and UK prospective owners, is that cars for Britain and Ireland will only be built on Friday afternoons or Monday mornings and as a result the steering wheel will be on the wrong side. The other problem, especially for Irish owners, is that it comes equipped with a 6.2 litre V8 petrol engine, that delivers around 12 mpg in city and suburban driving. Consumption improves to around 18 mpg in open road driving. This will result in high exhaust emissions, so you can expect it to fall into Irish road tax band G, the highest level. Currently this demands an annual payment of â‚Ź2100 and who knows what this may be after the budget. The fuel consumption is much the same whether you order the

six speed manual transmission, or the optional six speed automatic. Thankfully the car comes with a proper folding soft top. Great care was taken to get a smooth hardtop like appearance, that did not show the normal supporting frames through the fabric. The fabric extends below the waistline and the stitching has been designed to be as invisible as possible. The company say that it presents a smooth taut appearance that is similar in looks to that of the hardtop coupe. Once a single catch has been released and the appropriate button pressed, the top will fold down in a Z pattern in twenty seconds. The top is made from a thick durable canvas, with an acoustic headliner and incorporates a heated glass rear window. Right from the design stage, the Camaro’s structure was intended to accommodate both hardtop and convertible body styles. As a result it has a stiff structure, without maladies like scuttle shake and vague steering. Part of this reinforcing consists of underbody V-braces, front and rear, underbody tunnel bracing, under bonnet front suspension bracing and gearbox mounting stiffeners.

In addition the convertible has reinforcing tubes in the Apillars, additional reinforcing in the windscreen header rail, front door pillars and door sill panels. Thanks to this stiff body structure, the

convertible enjoys the same firm suspension settings as its hardtop coupe sister. The convertible thus enjoys the same sports performance and handling as the Camaro coupe.

rder books for the new Citroen C4 opened on 22nd November and the first customer deliveries are expected to start on 4th January 2011. The car comes in three levels of trim ; VTR, VTR+ and Exclusive. Customers will also have the choice of three petrol and four diesel engines. There is also a wide choice of transmissions, depending on which engine you select. These range from a four speed automatic, through a five speed manual, a six speed manual and a six speed electronically controlled manual gearbox. All the diesel

models are fitted with exhaust particulate filters. All manual gearchange versions have a gear selector efficiency indicator. An interesting combination is the e-HDI 110 diesel. This uses an 82 kW 1.6 litre diesel mated to an electronically controlled six speed manual transmission. It comes fitted as standard with automatic stop/start, plus brake energy regeneration and is claimed to have exhaust emissions of 109 gm/km. The diesel engine line-up is as follows: 67 kW 1.6 HDI diesel, mated to a five speed manual transmission, 82 kW 1.6 litre HDI diesel mated to a six speed manual transmission, the e-HDI diesel mated to a six speed EGS (electronic gear selection) gearbox and a 111 kW HDI diesel mated to a six speed manual gearbox. The petrol range starts with VTi 95 a 70 kW engine with a five speed manual, the VTi 120 an 89 kW engine with the choice of a five speed manual or a four

speed automatic and a THP 155 delivering 115 kW mated to the six speed EGS transmission. Standard specification on all versions is anti-lock brakes with emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, plus an electronic stability programme with traction control. Suspension is based on MacPherson struts at the front with a torsion

beam and trailing arms at the rear. Steering is a speed sensitive, electrically power assisted, rack and pinion. In interesting feature of the instrument binnacle, is that the background lighting can be changed from white to blue, to suit the driver’s preference. Also the speed indicator on the analogue speedometer, sweeps around the instrument’s

circumference, rather than operating from the centre of the dial. Depending on the trim level other items offered as standard or available as optional extras are a connecting box for Bluetooth and a USB socket, front and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring system, Xenon directional headlamps and front seats with a massaging function.

NEW MODEL REPORT

By KEVIN FENIX, www.twincam.ie

New Subaru Legacy Sports Tourer his new Subaru Legacy Sports Tourer goes on sale in early December. Power is provided by a 2.0 litre, horizontally opposed, four cylinder diesel engine, driving all four wheels through a six speed manual gearbox. Horizontally opposed engines and all wheel drive are almost a Subaru trademark by now. Power is 110 kW @ 3,600 rpm, with 350 Nm between 1,800 rpm and 2,400 rpm. The engine comes complete with a variable vane turbocharger and high pressure direct fuel injection. This gives a top speed of 203 kph (126 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 9.6 seconds. This more than satisfactory performance, for a large family car, comes with a combined cycle fuel consumption of 44 mpg (6.4 lt/100 km) and exhaust emissions of 168 gm/km. The car thus falls into Irish road tax band D. Standard features include a tilt and slide sunroof, leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual zone air-conditioning, alloy wheels, automatic wipers and lights, Bluetooth facilities and a premium six

T

speaker audio system. The audio equipment is MP3 compatible. The instruments appear to be white, when the ignition is switched off, but are bathed in a blue light when it is switched on. The chassis comes with MacPherson strut front suspension and double wishbone rear suspension. The centre differential is a limited slip design and in normal conditions splits the driving torque 50/50. However, when slip is detected in any wheel torque to that wheel can be reduced and redirected to another wheel with more grip. The all disc braking system includes anti-lock with emergency brake assist, hill-holder assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. An electric parking brake is fitted. Tyres of 225/45 R 18 size are fitted all round. When all five seats are in use, the Legacy Sports Tourer offers 0.526 cubic metres of luggage space. With the 60/40 split rear seats folded and only two seats in use, this can be increased to a maximum of 1.677 cubic metres.

ecently we had a series of different people appearing on national television to tell us about the roll out of mobile speed cameras all over the country. All spun the line that they were solely to prevent deaths on the road and not for raking in money. Let us look at some of these claims. The National Roads Authority were the same people who were given television and radio time to tell us that they had made extensive studies all over Europe, America and other countries into motorways and as a result of these expensive studies had decided not to have rest areas on our motorways, solely in the interests of safety! They have of course since had to change their attitude on this matter. Then there was the AA spokesman telling us that the cameras were solely for the interests of road safety.

This is as believable as prostitutes telling people they don’t charge for sex! The Minister for Transport appeared with the Minister for Justice and told us that the cameras were there solely for road safety. In fact he said he did not mind if a single offence was never recorded, as fines for speeding were not the purpose of the cameras. They were solely for road safety. As he mouthed off this bovine fertiliser, you could see the smirk on his ministerial companion’s face. Speed cameras are there for one reason and ONE REASON only, TO MAKE MONEY FOR THE AUTHORITIES! Set a low enough speed and you rake every motorist into your net.
