RANGE ROVER EVOQUE PHEV – Above and Beyond

W
alking towards my test Range Rover Evoque PHEV, I click the unlock button on the key and two things grab my attention. Firstly, the very trendy “animated” indicator lights that flash with the now familiar, Audi inspired, Knight Rider style motioned flash, something that I as a kid of the eighties, think is very cool indeed, thanks to Michael Knight and his famous Trans Am. Secondly, I think to myself, have they given me the wrong key, have they given me the key to a Velar. Looking straight on at the front end of the second generation Evoque, with its bulbous front bumper, smart chromed grille and sleek headlamps, it is hard to deny that it is strikingly similar in looks to its bigger brother the Range Rover Velar, which as a fan of the Velar, I do not have a problem with at all. SOPHISTICATED STYLE The similarities with the Velar continue around the side with flush door handles that glide out from the door when the car is unlocked. Around the back too are more similarities, with wraparound tail-lights joined up across the rear of the tailgate with a shiny black trim housing the Range Rover lettering.
All very sophisticated and grown-up looking, the Evoque has definitely matured well with this latest incarnation, especially when seen beside the outgoing model. INTERIOR When the original Evoque was launched in 2011 it set the standard not just for cars in its
class but for interior quality in any mainstream production car on the road. With reports of fashionista Victoria Beckham being involved in the choosing of interior materials and design, it was a watershed moment in the motor industry, with the involvement of the fashion world in the design process of a car, and then actually bringing that car to market with their input in place on the finished product. Ten years later and with Land Rover having a reputation for driving their cars further upmarket with each new generation, the second coming of the Evoque was not going to be an easy job for the Coventry based outfit, but I am pleased to say that they have not disappointed at all. The quality of the interior in both design and choice of materials is leagues ahead of any of their rivals in this class and is comfortably up there with the standards set by its big brothers the Range Rover, Sport and Velar.
The options lists seem endless, from choices of materials for seats, door trims, headliners, and dashboards, to interior and exterior colour combinations, hours can be lost while deciding on the perfect Evoque for yourself. The award winning Pivi Pro infotainment system in my test car was a joy to use. With two 10-inch touchscreens, it scrolls through the menu’s smoothly and briskly for everything from climate control, sat nav, parking assists and the audio system, which now comes with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. POWER UNIT The Evoque is now on sale with more engine options than ever previously available in our market, with both petrol and diesel options offered and mild hybrid technology available on many. My test car was the P300e PHEV plug in hybrid which comes
with a 1.5 litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine pumping out 200BHP and an electric motor adding another 105BHP giving a combined power output of 305BHP and allowing for a reported 0-100km/h time of 6.4 seconds, this car can really move along when asked to. With CO2 emissions as low as 44g/km and a reported EV only range of 55km, although I averaged 35km per charge, the PHEV makes a lot of sense on paper. Company car owners will love it for the low BIK, and for anyone on regular shorter journeys, school runs, commutes to work, will all benefit from the cheaper running costs. Land Rover quote a WLTP combined fuel consumption figure as low as 2L/100km, but this will vary greatly depending on how much the EV mode is in use. Expect north of 8L/100km if driving on petrol only. Continued on page 2

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE PHEV contd from page 1 DRIVING The petrol engine in the PHEV solely drives the front wheels while the electric motor sits on the rear axle and only drives the rear wheels, yet it feels very natural on the road with a smooth delivery of power and seamless shifts both from the automatic gearbox and when shifting from engine to electric power. The car drives well on the road with good grip through the corners, even when being pushed with all that power, and all with a good balance of firmness and comfort from the chassis and suspension. The cabin is well insulated with very little noise intrusion and the PHEV sounds more refined than the Evoque’s dieselpowered versions. It is a smoother drive too with that instant hit of electric power when taking off leaving the diesels still waiting on their power to build up.
Land Rover do insist that four-wheel drive will be available at all times, even when the hybrid battery is at 0%, they say there will constantly be a back-up of electrical power available to drive the rear wheels when four-wheel drive is required. OVERVIEW The electrification of motoring continues and, in my opinion, plug-in hybrids still seem the best option for now for most people considering the shift to electric. With the environmental benefits of an electric car and the reassurance that the petrol engine will ensure you get home regardless of battery charge. Land Rover have brought one of the best PHEVs to the table yet, with quality, style, power, and economy, it drives better and is more responsive than their diesels, it is also quieter and more refined and therefore
is hard for me to see any reason why people will choose anything other than the PHEV if they are purchasing a new Evoque, excluding regular longdistance drivers of course. PRICING With the diesels starting at €58,312 and the PHEV starting at €61,195, ex-works, the Evoque is not the cheapest car in this class, but if quality and style is what you’re after, it’s the one to go for.
NEW CAR REGISTRATIONS Figures released by SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) show that new car registrations have risen by 18.9% since January with electric car sales also increasing in the same period. There were 2,646 new car registrations during October which was a 15.2 per cent increase on October 2020. Registrations were also up by 21.4 per cent compared to October 2019. So far this year 103,253 new cars have been registered which is higher than the 2020 figures. Even though there has been an increase over last year, it still remains 11.1 per cent lower than the

same period in 2019. There has also been a noticeable increase in new electric vehicle sales. During the month of October, 522 new electric vehicles (EVs) were registered, which was more than double the EV registrations seen during October 2020. During the first 10 months of 2021, there were 8,342 new electric cars registered, which is 115.7 per cent higher than the first 10 months in 2020. Simi director-general Brian Cooke said: “New car registrations for October were ahead of last year for both the month and for the year to date, although
new car sales continue to remain behind pre-COVID levels. “With climate change at the forefront of everyone’s minds, it is hugely positive to see the year-on-year growth in the sales of both electric and plug-in electric hybrid vehicles. “The sudden removal of the grant incentive for plug-in electric vehicles, only serves to undermine consumer confidence in lower emitting technologies and this incentive should be reinstated for vehicles already committed to by both the industry and consumers.”

he PEUGEOT 3008 SUV is a leader in the five-seat family SUV market, with more than 800,000 vehicles produced since its launch in 2016. It has achieved an outstanding commercial performance in Europe and internationally. Having won the prestigious title of ‘Car Of The Year 2017’, the 3008 went on to win numerous other awards – including the ‘Car of the Year 2020’ prize awarded by a public vote at the Automobiles Awards digital ceremony in Paris on December 7th 2020. POWER OF CHOICE Earlier this year, the Peugeot brand proudly presented the new 3008 SUV. The car is also easy to drive around town, while it is impressively quiet and wellmannered on the motorway, with a variety of drive modes available to suit individual driving style and mood. consists of an electric motor paired with a 180bhp, 1.6litre turbocharged petrol engine to deliver a combined output of 225bhp and 360Nm of torque, and means Peugeot’s family SUV is fast, as well as potentially very frugal, with claimed fuel consumption as low as 1.4l/100km when starting every journey with a full battery. The electric motor (situated at the front of the 3008 HYBRID2) is coupled to a slick-shifting eight-speed e-EAT8 electronic-automatic gearbox for undiluted driving pleasure. The battery capacity is 11.6kWh and charging is easy and fast. A full charge (0-100%) can be completed in just 105 minutes when using a Wallbox charger (7.4kW). Built on Peugeot’s efficient EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform) platform, high levels of comfort are preserved, even with the fitment of the batteries. However, in order to accommodate the batteries, boot space (with all rear seat backs in place) has come down from 520-litres in a non-hybrid 3008 to 395litres in hybrid guise, but this capacity can be easily
expanded by dropping the rear seat backs when the need arises. Additionally, the hybrid’s fuel tank is 10-litres smaller than a regular 3008’s, but these are small sacrifices to make for the impressive power and fuel efficiency that the hybrid versions offer.

he original Audi Q5 SUV was launched back in 2008 and it attracted rave media reviews but, more importantly, huge sales success for the premium German brand. In fact the Q5 has gone on to become Audi’s biggest-selling car worldwide. The recently launched, all-new Q5 raises the bar even further by setting a new benchmark in its class for quality, refinement, infotainment technology and style. Additional S Line features include sports suspension, headlight cleaning system, front sports seats, seat trim covers in part leather, black glass-effect accent surfaces, black headlining cloth, illuminated front door sills with S logo, and foot pedals and footrest in stainless steel. The addition of a new 12volt mild-hybrid system to the TDI engine in the Q5 sees a belt-driven startergenerator (BSG) deliver a small hit of power and torque to assist when pulling away. The BSG charges a small lithium-ion battery when slowing down, which can be used to power ancillaries such as the climate control and electric power steering. In addition, the TDI engine can cut out and
coast at speed of up to 159km/h when you are in the right driving mode, while the stop-start system activates below 21km/h. It also makes things smoother when the engine does restart, adding to the excellent refinement within the cabin of the car. Performance from the TDI engine is strong, with the Q5 capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 9.0seconds, while the 7-speed dual-clutch S tronic gearbox shifts up and down through the gears in a seamless fashion. Audi Drive Select consists of five driving modes – Comfort, Dynamic, Efficiency, Individual and Auto, so drivers can select the drive mode that suits their driving style and mood.
Direct steering, strong brakes and multi-link suspension all round provides the Q5 with a great sense of driver engagement, while comfort for all occupants is top class. Claimed fuel consumption as low as 5.6l/100km translates into a potential range of up to 1,250kms from the Q5’s 70-litre fuel tank. VERDICT & PRICING I was extremely impressed with the new Audi Q5, from the way it looks to the way it drives, and I felt a sense of occasion every time I sat behind the wheel. Priced from €59,115 (on the road) Audi’s all-new Q5 TDI is a very tempting proposition indeed.

Mercedes-Benz GLC – Electrifies Diesel Power

S
ince Mercedes-Benz launched its GLC on the Irish and European market in 2015, it has been a popular addition to its range of mid and large sized SUVs. Updates to the GLC for the 2020 model year added new equipment and technology to the mix. During 2021 Mercedes-Benz introduced its plug-in hybrid petrol engine (badged 300e), but with the introduction of the GLC 300de model, Mercedes-Benz has taken a fundamentally different route to providing power through a dieselpowered plug-in hybrid unit. This 2.0-litre hybrid powerplant is borrowed, as is much else of the GLC’s engineering, from the highly-respected C-Class range. EFFORTLESS ACCELERATION The GLC 300de mates a four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel engine with a 13.5kWh battery pack that, when fully charged, is able to achieve up to 50kms of WLTP-rated all-electric driving, while a top speed of 230 km/h is achievable (where permitted). Combining turbo-diesel and electric power provides the GLC 300de with 306bhp and 700Nm of torque, while effortless acceleration leads to a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 6.2-seconds. Once the battery has dispensed its charge, the GLC’s diesel engine comes to life with little fuss, and will continue to run until the battery regains some charge through energy recuperation when slowing down and braking. road and traffic conditions. The standard 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission allows drivers to make the most of the GLC’s relaxed driving characteristics. Driving the GLC around town is a serene experience when running on battery power, and even at motorway speeds the cabin remain near-silent, with only a little wind-noise around the A-pillars noticeable. When compared to a fully electric or petrol-hybrid SUV, the initial take off is not as instantaneous, but it is very sprightly in all other situations. Supple suspension provides great support when driving on rough road surfaces and enhances the
overall driving experience of the GLC. he all-new Land Rover Defender Hard Top provides a unique combination of offroad capability, long-haul comfort, toughness and durability in the commercial vehicle sector. The Hard Top name dates back to the 1950 original and has been revived for the most durable and practical member of the new Defender family. Available in 90 (short-wheel-base with a payload up to 670kg) and 110 (long-wheelbase with a payload up to 800kg) body designs, the new Defender Hard Top provides 1,355 and 2,059-litres of cargo space respectively. The flexible load area features full rubber floor coverings, lashing points, hooks, lockable underfloor storage and a full bulkhead partition for security and safety.
LUXURIOUSLY APPOINTED The meticulouslyconstructed and luxuriouslyappointed cabin of the new Defender Hard Top model combines a two-seat passenger compartment, with the option of a third central ‘jump seat’ which can be used as a very handy armrest (with integrated cup-holders) when it is folded flat. TRIM LEVELS The rugged Defender 90 Hard Top comes exclusively in ‘Defender’ specification with durable Ebony fabric seats and rubber flooring throughout. Defender 110 Hard Top customers can choose from four specifications – Defender, S, SE and range-topping HSE – with a range of exterior and interior enhancements and wheel choices available. Land Rover’s state-ofthe-art Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system provides immediate and intuitive control of all the major vehicle functions, including seamless smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Defender 110 Hard Top features opaque black tinted glass on the outside, while inside the SUV’s door trim is extended up so the extra plastic covers the side of the glass – a very useful security feature. All new Defender Hard Top models feature a comprehensive set of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. DEFENDER ON REVIEW My new Land Rover Defender review vehicle was a 110 Hard Top ‘S’ with 250PS which was finished in stylish Eiger Grey metallic paint with Ebony Grained Leather and Robust Woven Textile seating. Key standard features include dual-zone climate control, 19” 6-spoke ‘Style’ alloy wheels with a 19” fullsize spare wheel (tailgate door-mounted), all-season tyres, LED headlights with Auto High Beam Assist, keyless entry, leather steering wheel and a leather gearshift, Open Differential with Torque Vectoring by Braking, cruise control with speed limiter, 4-way seat lumbar support, and a 10” touchscreen. High-sided rubber mats for the front footwells add to the rugged nature of the passenger compartment, and when the time comes to clean the interior out, the all-rubber floor coverings can be easily hosed down. The Hard Top’s load area is accessed via the sidehinged rear tailgate, while the rear side doors on 110 variants boost practicality and provide the flexibility to access smaller items located towards the front without the need to move bulky objects out of the way. The 110 Hard Top can accommodate a standard Euro Pallet thanks to its wide-opening tailgate and generous proportions. The maximum load length measures up to 1,472mm, while lashing points ensure large loads can be safely
secured in place.
ROAD TEST On the road is where the new Defender Hard Top really reigns supreme, with it proving itself to be as accomplished as a luxury SUV and as practical as a pick-up truck. Cabin refinement is exceptional, overall build quality is faultless and, in my opinion, the Defender is the most comfortable commercial vehicle on the planet. In every important area, the new Defender is light years ahead of its predecessor, and this becomes obvious the moment you take a place inside the new Defender’s spacious cabin. Light steering means the Defender is easy to manoeuvre, while front and rear parking sensors, along with big door mirrors, ensure you can get in and out of parking spaces in a fuss-free manner. A useful option to consider is Land Rover’s Clearsight Rear View Mirror, as it swaps the standard mirror view for an image relayed from a roof-mounted camera. This is a great addition in the Hard Top as the standard mirror is
obscured by the mesh opening in the bulkhead and by the spare wheel on the tailgate door. The mighty 3.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine in the new Defender certainly packs a punch, and there is plenty of torque available, while the standard eightspeed automatic transmission slips smoothly through the gears, and makes every journey thoroughly enjoyable. The Terrain Response system in the Defender is the same as you will find in Land Rover’s SUV’s, and it offers electronic control of power distribution, suspension ride height and diffs to deliver outstanding off-road ability. VERDICT & PRICING Land Rover Defenders have always thrived in the harshest environments right across the globe, and the new Defender Hard Top continues this tradition by being a true no-nonsense vehicle that will take whatever is thrown at it, or in it. ANSWERING YOUR EV QUESTIONS
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
DECLAN MEALLY, SEAI’s Head of Transport and Communities, spoke to EDDIE CUNNINGHAM at the Irish Independent and answered some commonly asked questions about EVs. First let’s deal with the types of ‘electric’ we’re talking about. There is some confusion around the term. Declan (DM): There are basically three different types of EV: two come with plugs and one doesn’t. A battery electric car (BEV) is powered solely by an electric motor and rechargeable batteries. You charge by plugging in at home or using the national charging network. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a petrol or diesel engine as well as an electric motor. The battery can be plugged in and charged like a fully electric car. A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has a petrol or diesel engine and an electric motor but the battery can only be charged by the petrol or diesel engine. The real reason the Government wants us to drive EVs? DM: Currently private cars account for around a fifth of the country’s final energy use and related emissions of carbon dioxide. One way to wean ourselves off fossil fuels is to use electricity for transport, making use of increasing amounts of renewable energy on our grid. Currently more than a third of the electricity
supplied to an electric car is generated from clean renewable energy. This means that even when emissions from electricity generation are considered, the CO2 emissions of an EV are lower than from the cleanest petrol engines. As the amount of renewable energy available on our grid increases, our electric cars will be relying a lot less on fossil fuels. So EVs can help win the necessary 50pc reduction in transport CO2 emissions. Air quality is another important factor to consider. Poor air quality has huge impacts on our health and wellbeing. EVs however, have no exhaust emissions when running on a battery and this is another good reason to make the switch. What do you think the average driver feels about EVs? DM: Recent SEAI research found more than half are interested in test-driving an EV and almost a quarter said they would consider one for their next purchase. They listed environmental benefits and low running costs as core influences. What about those who don’t favour an EV? DM: Those less inclined to consider one were concerned about high initial cost and perceived lack of
charge points. Incidentally, a small proportion was concerned about driving range and lack of choice. Are they not right to be concerned? DM: Yes, to a point. But remember the early days of mobile phones? There was limited choice, battery life and coverage. Now look where we are. The EV market was limited a few years ago too but it is moving fast now. There are new models coming out all the time. Indeed, there are more than 60 models on SEAI’s grant eligible list. And the choice is expanding every month. But what about driving range and battery capacity? DM: We don’t see driving range as really being a major concern anymore. Others still do though DM: That may be, but rapidly evolving battery technology means higher capacity and driving range. Early EVs typically had 100km range. Now, most have more than 300km; some tip the 500km mark. The vast majority of motorists only drive 50km a day so an EV will suit most. They only need to charge twice or three times a week. Experience shows most charging is done at home
overnight when it’s cheapest. Most EV drivers only use public charging points for quick top-ups to complete a journey. But what about rural dwellers who cover long distances? DM: Admittedly, some rural drivers are concerned about that. Yet, we are seeing more people with longer commutes attracted to EVs because they believe they can save money. What about higher EV prices? Aren’t they a deterrent? DM: It’s true the initial purchase price of an EV is higher than its petrol or diesel counterpart. We say the gap is narrowing all the time. With Government grants and tax incentives, the EV price difference is becoming relatively small. What about running costs? DM: People tend to underestimate the running costs of a petrol or diesel vehicle. To properly evaluate your decision, you should take account of the lifetime cost savings of the car. We estimate it is possible to save up to 80pc of fuel costs if you switch to an EV. Remember, maintenance 14 MotorMarket
costs are lower as an EV has fewer moving parts. When you factor in Government incentives the figures show how an EV can make economic sense.
from their profits in the year of purchase. • Benefit-in-Kind relief: 0pc BIK may be availed of for the first €50k of the list price of a fully electric car.
Can you clearly, concisely outline those Government incentives? DM: Okay. There is: • the SEAI electric car grant of up to €5,000 if you, as a private buyer, purchase a new BEV or plug-in hybrid and €3,800 for commercial van owners. • VRT relief: Up to €5,000 for new fully electric cars until the end of 2021 anyway. • Home charger grant: Up to €600 towards purchase/installation costs. • Low motor tax: €120 a year for EVs; approximately €170 for plug-in hybrids. • Road toll discounts: 50pc reduction for full EVs and 25pc for plug-in hybrids (available on several toll roads, off-peak times. Annual caps apply). • Accelerated Capital Allowances: This tax incentive allows sole traders, farmers, or companies that pay corporation tax, to deduct the cost of qualifying EVs and charging equipment
What’s the story with charging? DM: Charging your EV at home is the simplest, convenient and costeffective way to go. This is how we expect most charging will be done. For longer journeys aren’t there problems? DM: There is a network of over 1,350 public charge points and destination charging at shopping centres, workplaces, hotels, gyms and airports too. Home Charging takes typically 6-8 hours; Public Charging: 1-6 hours; Fast Charging: around 30 minutes for an 80pc charge. High Powered Charging: 100km in six minutes Different cars will charge at different rates using the same charger. What about the huge numbers living in apartments and those with no off-street parking? Isn’t an electric car irrelevant for them? DM: There is no doubt that EV charging options are not
convenient for those living in apartments or where there is no off-street parking. All I can say is that these issues are being addressed through incentive schemes for landlords and local authorities to install charging points that will cater for such situations. But you agree there is a problem? DM: They do pose a challenge. Apart from costs, don’t people feel a bit afraid of driving an EV? What can be done to ease those fears? DM: Some do. Until they take a test drive. We find that the driving experience changes most people’s minds. Even if it is just a short drive. We find they are more likely to consider an EV and tend to be more confident that range will suit their needs. But EVs don’t suit some. Will they ever? DM: Of course, EVs may not suit some drivers but we believe it will suit most – upwards of 80pc – especially as the economics of ownership and incentives increasingly apply. IMPRESSIVE RANGE Thanks to its new lithium-ion battery with a fully usable capacity of 45kWh, the all-new Kangoo
Van E-Tech electric boasts a range of up to 299 KM on the WLTPi cycle. This gives electric LCV drivers enhanced peace of mind for a full day of work trips, with unbeatable ownership and running costs. The battery, located under the vehicle floor, has no impact on the cargo area capacity. SIX DRIVE MODES The all-new Kangoo Van E-Tech electric comes equipped with a 90kW motor boasting 245Nm of immediately available torque for a smooth and stress-free driving experience. The Eco mode that caps the vehicle's power output and top speed helps optimise the range and is
best used when carrying a light load. The driver can also choose between three regenerative braking levels. 170 KM IN 30 MINUTES To recharge the battery, the all-new Kangoo Van ETech electric offers a choice of three charging methods. The standard model features an 11kW three-phase chameleon charger, suitable for all types of household charging setups. Optional chargers include the 22kW chameleon charger for rapid charging on public terminals and the 80kW rapid-charge DC charger that can recuperate 170 KM (WLTP) of range in 30 minutes. With the two optional
chargers, the battery is fitted with liquid cooling capabilities. The all-new Kangoo Van E-Tech electric’s battery takes 3h 50m to go from 15 per cent to 100 per cent charge when plugged into a 11kW wallbox and less than six hours on a 7.4kW wallbox. ALL THE ADVANTAGES The all-new Kangoo Van E-Tech electric offers the same innovations, equipment and comfort as the all-new Kangoo Van with ICE powertrains. These include the

Cargo capacity in the SW ranges from 530-litres in five-seat mode to a gigantic 1,780-litres when the rear seats are folded. In comparison, the 508 PSE Fastback commands cargo capacity of 487-litres and 1,537-litres respectively. The 508 PSE SW is a very comfortable car to drive on all manner of road surfaces, and even with the standard 20-inch alloy wheels it deals with speed ramps and bumps in the road with ease. porting Opel’s handsome new ‘Opel Vizor’ face, the new Crossland possesses a beautiful SUV design that will turn heads wherever you go. The Opel Vizor shows straight away that there is much to get to know under the surface. As with the Mokka, the new Opel Crossland dispenses with the Xappendix in its name, but the versatility, practicality and flexibility for which its predecessor was known remains. Crisp and compact on the outside and impressively spacious on the inside, the cool SUV look of the new Crossland brings a breath of fresh air to the compact SUV market. Opel has further developed the Crossland’s chassis and steering, and added a sporty SRi trim as well as the option of IntelliGrip adaptive traction control. This adaptive traction control system enables optimum traction and stability on all kinds of surface, thanks to its five mode settings of Normal, Snow, Mud, Sand and ESP. The driver can choose between the settings to best suit road conditions.
STRONG STANCE Organically integrating the grille and headlights, the Opel Vizor of the new Crossland extends in one single sweep across the front of the car. The Vizor optically stretches the width and organises the fascia with a reduced amount of elements. Opel’s legendary lightning-flash emblem proudly dominates the centre. At the rear, new darktinted LED tail-lights enhance the signature Opel
when the need arises, and are foldable at a ratio of 40/60. As a result, the regular cargo capacity of 410-litres can be expanded up to 1,255-litres to accommodate the transportation of large, bulky items – providing the new Crossland with one of the largest and most flexible load capacities in its class. Additionally, the Crossland’s boot floor can be adjusted in height for even greater flexibility.
PETROL & DIESEL ENGINE OPTIONS The new Crossland is available in a choice of SC, SRi and Elite variants, all of which are available with a choice of petrol or diesel engines. The 1.2-litre petrol engine in all variants is a threecylinder turbocharged unit with 83bhp and comes with a five-speed manual transmission as standard. Upgrade to the Elite model with a six-speed automatic transmission and the power output is boosted to 130bhp. Diesel power is provided by way of a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine with 110bhp (six-speed manual transmission) or 120bhp in the Elite trim with a sixspeed automatic transmission. TEST CAR My Crossland Elite diesel (6-speed manual) test car looked very elegant in its Diamond Black metallic paintwork with contrasting 16” silver alloy wheels and chrome-effect window mouldings. Being the range-topping model in the line-up, the Crossland Elite really wants for nothing. Key standard equipment includes ABS, EBD, ESP, lane departure warning, enhanced traffic sign
wing light design, and the new high-gloss black tailgate accents and new badging visually lowers the car, highlighting the new Crossland’s strong stance. Additionally, a wide selection of designer wheels enables buyers to choose a look to suit their individual style – from the elegantly understated to the provocatively eye-catching.

With 110bhp and 250Nm of torque on offer, the new Crossland diesel can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 11.4seconds, on its way to a top speed of 185km/h (where permitted). My test car exuded excellent road manners on the variety of roads that I travelled in it, with the turbo-diesel engine proving to me just how good its refinement is. With the new Crossland diesel capable of consuming as little as 4.6-litres of fuel for every 100km driven on a WLTP combined driving cycle, and with annual road tax costing just €200, the Crossland diesel is sure to
be an easy car to live with in every respect. The relatively high roof in the Crossland translates into excellent head room for all occupants, while leg room in the rear can be extended or reduced via the sliding rear seats when the need arises. The driving position is great too, with superb forward visibility adding greatly to the overall driving experience. Precise steering and an excellent manual gearbox, which is light and quick, are perfectly suited to the new Crossland’s underpinnings and powertrain, while new springs and dampers have cured the slightly wayward low speed handling characteristics of the original model. PRICING The new Opel Crossland is available now from just €23,250 (ex-works) in petrol engine form, or from €25,050 when powered by Opel’s amazing turbo-diesel engine. Sporting a cool new look, a practical cabin, generous standard equipment, and a range of fuel-efficient and refined engines, the new Opel Crossland is a desirable compact crossover.

We also see the traumatic consequences of road traffic collisions on families and communities when we deliver the harrowing news nobody wants to hear, that their loved ones have been killed or seriously injured in
a crash. “We must continue to work together to combat preventable road deaths and injuries. We can do this by slowing down, taking better care, having consideration for other road users, and remembering that we all share the road.” Sam Waide, CEO, Road Safety Authority said: “Whether we walk, cycle, drive or travel as a passenger, World Day of Remembrance is a time for us all to reflect on our own road user behaviour and make positive changes. If we all make small changes, for example to slow
down, it would make a big difference to road safety.” In 2005 the United Nations adopted a resolution which calls for governments to mark the third Sunday in November each year as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. This day provides an opportunity to draw the public’s attention to road traffic crashes, their consequences and costs, and the measures which can be taken to prevent them. 119 people have been killed on Irish roads to date in 2021 this is a decrease of 13 deaths compared to the same date last year.

unday, 21st November marked ‘World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims’ with commemorations taking place around the country to remember the victims of road traffic crashes and their families. A renewed focus for World Day of Remembrance this year is on the victims of serious injuries and their families. 24,663* people have died on our roads since we began recording fatalities in 1959. Since 1977, when injury records began, 84,977* people have been seriously injured. The number of deaths is equivalent to the population of the town of Carlow and the number of serious injuries is equivalent to the population of Galway.
On Tuesday November 16th the Road Safety Authority (RSA) held a special event for family members of those who were killed and those who have been seriously injured in road traffic collisions, at the Museum of Modern Literature in Dublin. The event will be available to view on the RSA Facebook page. A special Remembrance Mass was broadcast live on RTÉ 1 television on Sunday 21st November at 11am, with other events taking place nationwide to mark the day. Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton said: “World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is a time to remember those who have been killed or seriously injured on our
roads. “Equally, it is a time to honour the families and loved ones of the victims of road traffic crashes. It is also a time to thank our emergency services and healthcare workers who deal first-hand with the consequences of road traffic collisions. I ask that we all take a moment to remember everyone affected by road trauma.” Liz O’Donnell, Chairperson of the Road Safety Authority said: “This year is the 15th year that we marked World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in Ireland. It is our way of ensuring that those who have died or been seriously injured are not forgotten. Because behind the numbers are real people; somebody’s father, brother, son,

he eagerly awaited EV6, Kia’s first dedicated electric vehicle is now available at Kia Dealers throughout Ireland. There has been a healthy interest in the new car with over 200 units sold, sight unseen, to Irish motorists. “Interest in this car has been unprecedented “ commented Kia Ireland Managing Director Ronan Flood. “So much so that we have revised our forecasts (supply allowing) for next year to 750 units. We at Kia can confidently declare that EV6 is the embodiment of the vision we outlined in our brand re-launch earlier this year. “Making the EV6 available to customers for dealer order at this stage in the car’s journey – shows the excitement, interest and passion that this forward-looking, state-of-the-art battery electric vehicle has already created,” continued Mr. Flood. “The huge buzz around the Kia EV6 is unlike any other model we have brought to market, and it is proof that electric vehicles can be fun and are getting Irish motorists energised when it comes to considering sustainable mobility.” Kia Ireland are initially offering two trim levels EV6 Earth and EV6 GT Line (both RWD). The Earth model on 19” wheels has a full charge range of 528kms, while the GT-line on 20” wheels can achieve up to 506kms. Both models have a long-range (77.4
kWh) battery pack paired with a 168 kW (229ps) electric motor. Both models are also fitted with a heat pump. The EV6 Earth (€50,000 inclusive of an SEAI Grant) comes with a host of comfort, convenience and safety features as standard including 19” alloys, dual 12.3” Curved DriverDisplay Screens, UVO Connect, charcoal grey vegan leather upholstery with premium relaxation seats, LED headlamps and a smart power tailgate. Key additions to the EV6 GT Line (€54,345 Inc. In 1938, the Mercedes-Benz W125 reached a top speed of 268.8 miles per hour, a record for the fastest land-speed vehicle on a public road that stood for 80 years until it 1937 Mercedes-Benz W125 was broken by the Koenigsegg Agera RS in 2018.
