CITROEN C4 PICASSO – AN IDEAL FAMILY CAR W
ith prices starting as low as Euro 24,495, the new C4 Picasso offers five individual seats, with ISOfix fittings for child safety seats, on the three rear seats, plus a normal luggage space of 0.537 cubic metres, when all five seats are in use and exhaust emissions of less than 100 gm/km. In addition being that bit higher than most family hatchbacks, it is easier for older people to get in and out, while for younger people with small children, it makes reaching in to fasten them into or unfasten from their child safety seats, that much easier. The three rear seat backs fold flat onto the seat cushions, if additional space is needed and this then increases the luggage space to 0.630 cubic meters. In addition, the back of the front passenger seat can be folded flat and when this is done, there is a load floor length of 2.5 metres (8.2 feet), making it ideal for carrying long loads like a roll of carpet or linoleum, or a ladder. Citroen offer a choice of four trim and equipment levels; VTR, VTR+ Exclusive and Exclusive+. In addition there is the choice of two diesel engines, in three levels of power output, plus manual and automatic transmission. The automatic is particularly smooth and effortless and would be my preference, but the manual is also smooth and easy to operate. From a driving point of view, being that bit higher than your normal family hatchback, you get an excellent view of the road ahead and the scenery all round, aided by the large panoramic windscreen. The instrument panel is placed in the top centre of the facia, where it is easy to see, without the driver having to take his or her eyes off the road and where things like the audio system are easily reached by both the driver and the front seat passenger. On a short test drive, covering both country roads and the M7 motorway, the car cruised along with an absolutely effortless ease. The range starts with the HDi 90 diesel in VTR trim priced at €24,495. This engine delivers 68 kW @ 4,000 rpm, with
230 Nm @ 1,750 rpm and has exhaust emissions of 110 gm/km. It drives through a five speed manual gearbox. Fuel consumption by EU testing standards is : Urban 4.8 lt/100 km (58 mpg), Extra urban 3.8 lt/100 km (74 mpg) and Combined cycle 4.2 lt/100 km (67 mpg). When fitted out to VTR+ specification the recommended retail price rises to €25,895. The e-HDi 90 engine comes with a six speed automatic transmission and is priced at Euro 26,795. It has exhaust emissions of just 98 gm/km and its fuel consumption, by EU testing standards is ; Urban 4.2 lt/100 km (67 mpg), Extra urban 3.5 lt/100 km (80 mpg), Combined cycle 3.8 lt/100 km (74 mpg). A more powerful version of the 1560 cc diesel is known as the e-HDi 115. It has a power output of 84 kW @ 3,600 rpm and 270 Nm @ 1750 rpm. Linked to the six speed manual gearbox, it is offered in VTR+ trim at €26,995 and Exclusive trim at Euro 28,995. Fuel consumption for this engine with both manual and automatic transmission, by EU testing standards is ; Urban 4.5 lt/100 km (62 mpg) Extra urban 3.8 lt/100 km (74 mpg) and Combined cycle 4.0 lt/100 km (70 mpg). The Exclusive version when fitted with the six
speed automatic is priced at €29,695. At the top of the range the Exclusive+ model is powered by a 1997 BlueHDi 150 engine. It delivers 110 kW @ 4,000 rpm, with 370 Nm @ 2,730 rpm, giving it a top speed of 209 kph (129 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 9.7 seconds. It is equipped with a six speed manual transmission and has exhaust emissions of 110 gm/km. Fuel consumption by EU testing standards is ; Urban 4.9 lt/100 km (57 mpg), Extra urban 3.8 lt/100 km (74 mpg) and Combined 4.2 lt/100 km (67 mpg). It is priced at Euro 35,095 but for that much higher price you get a very comprehensive level of equipment. This includes things like a dark tinted panoramic sun roof, with an interior sliding blind, radar guided cruise control, blind spot monitoring system, active seat belt safety system, heated, folding and dipping exterior rear view mirrors, an electro-chromatic dipping interior rear view mirror, fan speed adjustment for rear seat passengers, dark tinted rear windows, aluminium front and rear scuff protectors and a facia mounted, scented air freshener, plus all the other equipment provided as standard on the lower specification levels.

rom the moment that I sat into this new Carens, I felt superbly comfortable and very much at home. The leather covered steering wheel in particular has a very comfortable and high quality feel about it. The 1.7 litre diesel engine is very smooth and quiet with more than an adequate performance for an adaptable family car like the Carens. Top speed is 181 kph (112 mph), which is well above the maximum speed limits in most countries in the EU. Its 0-100 kph acceleration time is 13.0 seconds, which whilst not in the sports performance sector, is perfectly adequate for a versatile and adaptable family car. However, of far greater significance is its fuel consumption, which by EU testing standards is 44 mpg (5.7 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, rising to 65 mpg (4.3 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and averaging out at 57 mpg (4.9 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. That gives an exhaust emissions reading of 129 gm/km, putting the Carens in the current Irish road tax band B, with a charge of 225 euro per annum. All of that has to be good news for the average family motorist in these difficult financial times.

One area where the family motorist may have concerns, is in the luggage capacity, especially if all seven seats are needed. When seven seats are in use, it is just 0.103 cubic metres, which is half of that offered by the Kia Picanto, its economy segment sister. However, if only five seats are required, it is a much more spacious 0.492 cubic metres, which is even
better than that offered by the popular Ford C-Max. Then for exceptional loads, when only two seats are needed it expands to 1.650 cubic metres, which is just slightly less than that provided by the Ford C-Max. If luggage capacity is going to be a problem, you may have to consider a trailer or roof box for special occasions when the extra space is needed. The Carens

is fitted with streamlined roof rails, but unfortunately with the time at my disposal I was unable to get a figure for maximum roof loading weights. When it comes to trailers, from the figures it looks as if braked trailer weight is limited to 734 kg, with no figure available for unbraked trailers. From a driving point of view, the instruments and controls are well laid out for comfort and ease of use. The instrument binnacle ahead of the driver contains three large round analogue instruments, with white lettering on a black background and red needles and highlights. The tachometer is on the left, with a matching speedometer on the right. Between the two there is a larger round instrument that has the engine temperature gauge in its top left, with a matching fuel level gauge in the top right. Below these two smaller gauges there is a rectangular digital information panel, that gives a variety of information like the outside air contd. on page 6

temperature, trip and total distance recorders, as well as warning signals for things like an open door and other similar information. The left hand horizontal arm of the steering wheel has controls for the sound level emitted by the audio system, while between the lower edge of the horizontal arm and the left side of the vertical arm, there are controls for the mobile telephone operations. Matching these on the right hand side there are buttons for the cruise control associated operations. At the top of the centre console, there is a digital screen, surrounded by buttons and switches for all the audio related systems. The screen also displays a large readout of the time in the centre, when not
indicating other information, with a small indication of the day and date along its lower edge. At the bottom of the console, ahead of the gearlever, there is a useful large open storage space, with the clearly marked controls for the dual zone climate control system in an easy to see panel above. A stalk on the left hand side of

the steering column operates the lights and direction indicators, while the matching stalk on the right controls the wipers and washers. The steering wheel adjusts for reach and height and the driver’s seat for reach, height and backrest angle, so finding a comfortable driving position is no problem at all. The two front seat backs have folding picnic tables for
the convenience of the two outer middle row seat passengers. The middle row has three individual seats that adjust for reach and the backrests fold flat onto the seat cushions to facilitate carrying extra loads. They also tilt and slide forwards to provide access to the two rearmost seats. The two outer middle row seats have ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. Parking is made easier by the rear park assist camera which shows a rear view when reverse is selected. This is displayed in the digital panel at the top of the centre console. A Spacesaver spare wheel is housed in a well below the floor. Assess is gained by winding down a holder located in the floor of the seven seater luggage compartment. On a wide variety of different roads, the ride was comfortable and the roadholding good. The steering has a positive feel and is geared to give a comfortable 2.7 turns from lock to lock. The anti-lock braking system, includes electronic stability control and vehicle stability management. Servicing is required every 30,000 km (18,000 miles) or two years, which ever comes first. Then to gild the lily, so to speak, Kia offer a 7 years unlimited mileage warranty, 7 years/150,000 km (93,000 miles) anti-perforation cover, 5 years paint cover and 3 years roadside assistance.
