This F-type Jaguar comes from a distinguished line of sporting roadsters. In 1948 Jaguar produced their sensational XK 120 model. Its styling was very modern and streamlined for the time and it was powered by an all new twin overhead cam six cylinder engine. On a timed speed run on the Jabbeke highway in Belgium in May 1949 it managed a speed of 132.596 mph (213.392 kph). It was followed in the middle 1950s by the XK 140, which had basically the same body styling, but with improvements to its technical specification. After a few years the styling was updated with things like a one piece curved windscreen with the XK 150 model. Then in 1960 Jaguar introduced the iconic E-type, the immediate predecessor of this new F-type model. This new F-type is available with a choice of 3.0 litre V6 or five litre V8 petrol engines. The V6 comes in two levels of tune, 250 kW/450 Nm and 279 kW/480 Nm, both driving the rear wheels through an eight speed automatic/manual gearbox. The test car was powered by the more powerful version of the V6 engine. It is credited with a top speed of 275 kph (170 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 4.9 seconds. Generally speaking it is pleasantly quiet in operation, but when you put hard pressure onto the throttle pedal for acceleration, you get a really impressive roar from the twin exhaust pipes. By EU testing standards, the Urban cycle fuel consumption is 22 mpg (12.8 lt/100 km), while on the Extra urban cycle it is a superb 40 mpg (7.0 lt/100 km). This gives an average on the Combined cycle of 31 mpg (9.1 lt/100 km), which is highly satisfactory for a car of its scintillating performance. Exhaust emissions on the version tested are 213 gm/km, putting it in Irish road tax band F, with a current annual rip-off of Euro 1,200, which is outrageous considering the pathetic state of our road surfaces. The ride is on the firm side, but then you would expect that from a car with the performance potential of the F-type. The steering has a positive and direct feel and is geared to give 2.4

turns from lock to lock. The leather covered steering wheel has a high quality feel, which adds greatly to the overall driving pleasure. Ventilated disc brakes are fitted front and rear with large 380 mm diameter discs at the front and 325 mm at the rear. The electrically power assisted braking system has a smooth and reassuring feel at all speeds. Drivers have the choice of a fully automatic transmission or a clutchless manual operation. If you choose the manual operation you have the option of flicking the gearlever backwards or forwards, or using the paddles located on either side under the steering wheel. I decided to use the automatic operation and I am pleased to say it worked perfectly. There is also an automatic stop/start function, in the interests of fuel economy and lowering the exhaust emissions in city and suburban driving conditions. Ten spoke cast alloy wheels are fitted all round. At the front they are shod with Pirelli P Zero tyres, 245/40 ZR 19 – 94Y, while at the rear they have Pirelli P Zero 275/35 ZR 19 – 96Y. The spare wheel, however, is one of those narrow Spacesavers, shod with T135/70 R 19 – 105M tyres. What worries me is how such a narrow tyre would cope with wet or slippery conditions, especially on narrow and twisting country roads, for a car with the power and torque of the F-type, even at the slow speeds specified for a Spacesaver spare. The test car also had one of

those latex puncture kits, but they are only suitable for pinhead sized holes in the tread itself. Inside the F-type is luxuriously comfortable and finished to a high standard, as you would expect from a car bearing the name JAGUAR. Both seats are superbly comfortable, well bolstered and electrically adjustable for height and backrest angle. Reach is manually adjustable using a lever under the seat. The instrument binnacle contains two large analogue instruments with white lettering on a black background. The tachometer is on the left with the speedometer on the right. Between them there is a digital information panel. It shows the time, outside air temperature, engine temperature gauge, fuel level gauge, gear mode (Drive, Neutral, Reverse, Park), trip recorder and a digital indication of the speed. As a result, I never bothered to look at the speedometer, as I find the digital speed indicator a lot more convenient. The instruments are directly in front of you and easy to see between the horizontal arms of the steering wheel and the lower edge of the upper section of the rim. The two horizontal arms of the steering wheel have selectors for a variety of different facilities, like telephone, cruise control, menu selection etc. The two upper vents in the central console can be lowered out of use or raised as required. Below that there is a large digital screen associated with the audio system, satellite navigation and other facilities. Below that there are a variety of

controls for the heating and ventilation system. All are easy to see and easy to use whilst driving. The inside of the folding roof is finished to a very high standard. When closed you could be forgiven for thinking that you are driving a car with a fixed roof. You are in a quiet peaceful surrounding. Lower the top and keep the windows raised and that same quiet peaceful surrounding remains. Even more amazing was the heating system. Set it for a comfortable ambience for driving with the roof raised. Then without altering the settings lower the roof, keeping the windows up or down and that same comfortable ambience remains, without having to make any adjustments to the temperature set. Both side windows are electrically operated, as are the adjustments for the two exterior
