WHY WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BE PUBLISHED & BLACK Have you ever thought about why being a black author is such a big deal? If you have not, shame on you. Having the right to publish is something I've learned as an african American woman to absolutely chaerish ever second I am alive and breathing. May sound crazy to some, but here is the deal. When I think about how my ancestors and even my own parents worked for me to have a great life, that pretty much sums it up for me. As a black women, I grew up in a household with both of my parents. They actually planned theirs life together. They dated, got married, purchase burial plots in 1973, purchased a home shortly after. Seems like that's great. However they still struggled financially. My mom worked for the banks for 18 years and then for the post office 18 year. She died at 53 due ti an illness. My dad worked some jobs but still struggled. What I found out was that they both held unique gifts that they had no idea of how to manifest into additional income. When my mother died, I was able to read through her journals and I realized how full of success she was but didn't have the information to create, sell and profit. Don't let your lack of knowledge stop you from excelling. Isn't that something? This brings me to publishing, self-publishing. What I want to say to black authors in this season is do not down play self-publishing. It's not just about publishing a book, its about having the ability to create a product one time and sell unlimited times. That's called creative power. When I think about slavery and how slaves were not allowed to read books, I cringed and then I rejoice because the power of publishing is available to all of us now. Stop chillin and publish. This is not a game. We have been trained in the black community that you can only live off of working for money. But, the power of publishing gives us the keys to create products that we dont have to work for. Ebooks are so powerful in the digital world. This means when someone buys your ebook, pdf or digital course from your website you don't have to do anything. When they purchase, there is a link that is emailed to them to recived their purchase. On the other hand, you have your money in your account and you dont have to do anything. Kick back, and wake up with money in your account. I call it, "making my in my sleep".
The song says it best, "These are the times we all wish for." Let's not ignore one of the greatest gifts we've been given. I think back to the 80's and I always say, things were so much harder in 1985. The only way we knew to publish was through some big time publishing company that we would probably never have the chance to encounter in a lifetime. Then someone discovered how to cut out the middle man and eBooks and self-publishing started trending. Everyone wants to write their story and rightfully so, you should. Everyone who has a gift should have a book on that topic. Books create credibility for your name. Publishing is not about gaining the author title. What will you do with it when you get it? For years I've seen black authors publish their books and then do nothing. Most of them have forgotten that they even have a published book. This is horrible. Please stop. Create a plan for your book or books, just like we know we need a business plan to ask the bank for money. Create a business plan for your book before you ask readers to buy. Who is your book for? What billion dollar corporations need your content? Yes, non-fiction books are content. Content that someone is searching for right now. This magazine is a piece of content. Let's wake up and educate our children and those connected to us on the importance of creating wealth through books. We no longer have to wait to be approved to sit at tables, we have the power to build our own. Let's not leave this right to publish swept under the rug. Start creating wealth through books today. BUILDING YOUR CEO AUTHOR BRAND When you start building an author brand, start with your message. Many authors thinks it's about them and the book. It's your clear message. We can avoid begging for book sales if we start with a business plan for our message. How will your message get to the people you are speaking to? Most entrepreneurs think they are serving the masses and they are not. You are serving a group of people who are looking for the content in your book. Building an author brand means building an empire. Your book is a real business and you should treat it as such.
