F OREW ORD Kaylee Dominique T. Ordoñez Editor-In-Chief/Organization Head Pugad Literary Folio

It is no understatement that Pugad Literary Folio has been working towards this since A.Y. 2021-2022 started for Ateneo Senior High School. While our first folios are something I’m immensely proud of, it is undeniable just how fulfilling it is to see AGAPE: A Love Beyond Words come to life, from its conceptualization to its release. This zine, this project, is the fruition of Pugad’s vow upon entering yet another year: to develop its members’ talents in the name of advocacy, and to grow both as writers and as advocates for a future where all people are seen. Within our person is a power that is waiting to be harnessed— it manifests itself in ways that may not be as flamboyant as we were told growing up, but are relevant all the same. In a world that continues to turn come hell or high water, sometimes even regardless of those who are falling behind, the call to use this power becomes more crucial than ever: to save those whose screams are drowned out by unyielding machinations, so that we may march on not at the cost of the silenced, but of the bigotry that remains tethered to society. It is an uphill battle, one that began long ago yet shows no signs of ending soon, but we answer that call because we were taught to keep alive that fire within us that burns with a love for humanity— especially in recent times, where the fight for equal rights reaches its culmination in the face of the pandemic and the upcoming elections. We in Pugad realized this as well, which led to the making of this project. Agape is a type of love in Greek philosophy that is all-encompassing and unconditional, one that is even described to be representative of God’s love for humanity. I was always fascinated with the Greek types of love, and I remembered thinking in the earliest parts of the zine’s conceptualization that Agape seemed fitting to the project’s purpose,

which is why the project is now titled as such. Our project’s purpose is to shine light on not only Agape but also the other Greek types of love— Storge (familial love), Philia (love for friends), Eros (passionate love or an appreciation of inner beauty), Philautia (self-love), and Xenia (a love based on reciprocity)— in a different way than one normally would, and so we built the whole zine around these themes. With this project, we had ultimately hoped to not only answer the call to action and pass it on to all who may read our zine, but to also show that love can manifest in more ways than one. None of this would have been possible without the wonderful members and officers of Pugad Literary Folio, who gave their all in making Agape come to life. Everything has been leading up to this, and no words can encapsulate just how grateful I am to witness the fruits of the labor of such a talented group of individuals. Special thanks to the whole of the Council of Student Committees for giving us the opportunity to work with you on this project, and to the CSC Sandigans— Alunsina, Kanlaon, Lakambini, Mapulon, and Matanglawin— for letting us use our talents to become a part of your respective journeys in advocacy; it was an honor to be able to use our prose and poetry for a cause with you all. To all readers who will stumble upon this zine, I hope that the works of our members inspire you to take a stand and advocate for equality. If your voices cannot be heard, then let paper or screens immortalize them; join us in our efforts to use our talent for a cause bigger than ourselves, and in exercising Agape in words and in action.
