Debuting all their glory in Tulsa, Powerlite brings new colorways to the race crowd. With frame sizes ranging from Mini to Pro XXXL, the Powerlite crew is excited to showcase the new line as they prep for sales in the 2023 season. Our personal favorites? Paired with the exposed aluminum logo on the down tube, the Matte Red, Purple, and Turquoise jump out as a few of the colorways we expect to see Factory Powerlite racers, and fans of the brand, to be rocking in the new season.
A match that makes perfect sense. The all around good guy, Matty Cranmer is bringing his vibes and bike skill to the legendary brand of Mongoose. Already testing out the flow of the Supergoose and the power of the La Familia v2, Matty has a lot of riding in his future with the full Mongoose line behind him. Be on the lookout across social media for the Matty and Mongoose content about to go down.
While the Jett Lawrence Championship ride distracted some, the real star at the Grand’s Yoshimura booth came from the mountain bike side of the company with their ENDH stem. Will a BMX specific version be next to match their Chilao pedals?
The Supercross BMX squad expands their Pro field with the addition of Vineta Petersone and Spencer Cole. As they both look for a big season, their new rides are a big step as they now have the backing of a BMX legacy brand. photos via @supercrossbmx
The 2022 Team of the Year has gained a few new faces as they head into the 2023 season. RIFT/Tangent brings in the young gun and style master John Kerr along with 2x National No.1 Amateur Girl Ava Corley and her fellow BMX Sharks alum, AJ Hernandez. A stacked new class of amateurs is bringing even more good times to the Tangent team pits as they rock the Black and Gold for the first time.
The frames are finally here. The Race Inc RA-20’s bring a new look to modern BMX bikes featuring a seamless top tube / head tube transition. The new frames come as a big shift in the brand’s line of products as the Race Inc retro lines continue to be popular amongst the old to mid school markets.
While the BMX world could see it coming, the news of Izaac Kennedy joining the pro powerhouse team comes at the perfect in his career. Locking in big finishes of his Men Pro and Elite Pro career during the 2022 season, Kennedy joins the brand as the international competition rolls into the 2024 Olympic road. Simply put in a recent social post “Havin fun gettin ready to bark this year!” That dog mentality has worked in the past years so with the backing of Chase Bicycles, we’re excited for his new chapter.
“The Entertainer,” Cedric Cade, is rocking new colors and new brands as he heads into the first year of 17-20x. A part of the 2023 Factory Remix team, the Vegas local has also signed with BOX Components as a sponsored rider. Rocking his new Remix/ Box backed Meybo at the season opener, the Cedric flair popped even more so with the new orange and black look.

rom humble beginnings as a Minnesota girl, to the world stage as the winningest BMX racer in history. The story of Alise Willoughby has been told countless times over her illustrious career, but following her unprecedented 10th USA BMX Pro Title, we wanted to look back at her full career before she continues to dominate as the Queen of Tulsa.

Born into the Post household in 1991 as the first daughter of Mark and Cheryl, Alise began her childhood in catch-up mode. With two brothers Jeremy and Nick, who are 11 and 8 years older than Alise, the competitive nature started early as she chased down her older brothers to local trails on her 16”. As her older brothers found BMX racing, Alise already saw glory as a gymnast. Getting involved in gymnastics and dance after watching the 1996 Olympics, that side of Alise’s life would continue as a key role in her success as an athlete. But while she was being taken around to the gym and dance studios, her brother found the sport the whole family could play a part in, which takes us to the most important lap never rode.
Atop the starting hill at Brainerd Lakes BMX, the now worldrenowned BMX racer walked away from the starting gate. However, the next week, a first crash and the first trophy hooked the young racer. At the time of Alise’s start in BMX, she was stacked up against already thriving girl champions. “We didn’t get to race the other Novices at the time, it was just the Girl’s class. I was racing like NAG 1’s in two different age groups, these sisters, and they were really good right from the word GO. So I had some tough competition right off the bat.”
After a full year of traveling to Brainerd Lakes, the Post family teamed up with another family to begin the dream of a BMX track in St. Cloud. From finding the abandoned park, to getting scars from gymnastics routines in not yetcleared grass, Pineview Park BMX held its first race in 1999. And 24 years later, Pineview Park is still volunteer-operated as one of the best tracks in the region. When talking to
Alise, the pride for Minnesota and gratitude for her family rang through as we discussed the chapters of her career. “I feel I owe everything to my family for their support, starting the local track, and being so involved and supportive. Like I said, they never pressured me, but they did expect me to give my best if they were going to give theirs. They never set limits as to where it could take me, while always keeping me firmly grounded to my Minnesota roots and appreciating everyone and every opportunity along the journey. They led by example to always give back and be the reason someone smiled that day. Then Sam became another huge piece in the puzzle both, on and off the track, from 2008 onwards. He has always supported and inspired me to be the best ME I can be.”
As we venture into Alise’s career, let’s look at her Amateur Titles on the ABA BMX circuit. As racers trapped indoors in the winter months know all too well, jumping back on the bike after the snow clears can be an odd time in the BMX season. For Alise, however, the training didn’t stop as she continued with gymnastics and track and field to stay well-rounded. With gymnastics 30+ hours a week through her amateur years, her competitiveness in the gym translated directly to the track as she began to progress into national attention in the early 2000s. Winning her first Amateur National No. 1 title in 2001, Alise began to see a path as she watched the Women Pro dominator, Kim Hayashi, take charge of the class. A one-year shot from her dad to get the attention of a team to help out with race expenses turned into Alise taking the bull by the horns and showing she could dominate with the boys at the local and with the top girls across the country.
With a 2001 Girls title, a 2003 Girls Cruiser Title, and a doubled down 2004 Class and Cruiser sweep, the next step in her mind? Racing in the pro ranks. The competitive nature of wanting that next challenge, mixed with a team manager letting her go for it, brought The Beast to the gate of Black Mountain BMX for her Pro debut. “I always just gave my best effort, never really had a ton of pressure on what it was going to be or could become. Then by the time I turned 15, and I had essentially always looked for the next challenge, I was there racing the professional ranks.”
Winning for the first time in Desoto, Texas, the young 15-year-old was only three races into her pro career. Keeping the momentum rolling throughout the year, Alise brought her first Golden Crank and Pro Title home to Minnesota, setting a stage for her confidence and prowess in the sport to grow. That 2006 rookie year performance brought her into the USA Cycling National Team. Being too young to join the squad for the 2008 Olympic run, Alise started off her international racing in 2007. No training center at the time meant
the future Olympian was thrown into the school of hard knocks as she faced her first 8-meter hill as a
PULL BMX Magazine 19
16-year-old at her first World Cup. “I remember the first time I went down that hill in France, I was still in the middle of the jump, and Kim (Hayashi) was like at the landing. I had no idea how far I should be jumping.” Alise and her fellow US racers just entered an era that had just begun to race off the big hill. There was no prep, no training grounds to perfect the transition and backside. “That’s just how it was back then.”
The now 10x National No.1 Women Pro’s no-limits lifestyle has produced an athlete up for any challenge. Searching for that next box to tick brought her to the pro ranks at 15, it took her to the international and Olympic stages, and it brought her to become the pinnacle of what a BMX career can become. With so many races throughout the years, what are the races that mean the most for Alise Willoughby?
year before, Alise respected the wishes of her #1 fan and went into Reno mentally and physically unprepared. “There was definitely some good competition there, and by some reason of grace or power, I ended up winning both days. I remember just being in tears as I crossed the line. Just so proud of that effort, and it was a moment of, “Ok, what can the human spirit accomplish.” This is the last race my mom gets to see, not me crashing on the ground or whatever happened at the 2013 Grands.” Demonstrating what willpower and mental strength can accomplish, Cheryl was able to watch her favorite racer compete one more time before passing a couple of days later.
2014 World Championships
2014 Reno
As her professional life had been charging on, the Post family would have to do the unthinkable, say goodbye to wife, mother, and friend Cheryl Post. Alise recalls being with her mom as she tells her to catch her flight to the year’s first race in Reno. Being off her bike since Grands the
Burying herself in racing following her mom’s passing, the first World Cup of the year would sideline Alise with a broken leg in practice. Rehab and reflecting in San Diego hit hard as she watched the rest of the field racing, but that didn’t stop her from finding a new box to tick. Racing the World Champs in July. With a
diagnosis of 16 weeks of recovery, Alise returned to the surgeon who bent the rules ahead of the 2012 Olympic games with a new goal, the 2014 World Champs, in 12 weeks. With a reluctant look from her doctor, paired with a determined look going the other way, Alise was able to meet and exceed her goal. “At six weeks, I started to be able to do a little bit of weight bearing, walking a bit again. At nine weeks, I started rolling around on my bike a bit, just doing very minimal stuff. Then I lined up at the World Championships in exactly 12 weeks.” Finishing with her best World Champs result at the time, in 12 weeks, Alise went from a broken leg to second in the world, four weeks ahead of the expected recovery time. Again, overcoming a new challenge and finishing the season with the USA BMX National No.1 Title to kickstart a new era of her career.
2017 World Championships
A tear and goosebump-inducing moment in sports. Her partner and now coach, Sam Willoughby, looked on not even a year after his accident. The BMX world couldn’t
USABMX.COM H VOL. 13 / ISS. 1 20
contain their excitement as Alise celebrated with Sam and her com petitors at the finish line. A moment that pushed aside the competition of sports and brought out companion ship between the BMX couple that had gone through so much. As our top moment in sports, we urge any one who hasn’t watched the video to put down this magazine and do so immediately.
2018 Season
Not many in BMX can say they have an undefeated season in their list of accomplish ments, but the 2018 sea son brought exactly that for Alise Willoughby. With Sam at her side, the wins kept com ing, only realizing what she had done once it was done and dust ed. For the fans watching from the outside as she dealt with the pressure, the question was how? Alise explained that it wasn’t the pressure building but the expecta tion. “It wasn’t necessarily my expectations but everyone else’s expectations of me. In that regard, anything but a win feels like you’re letting people down. The people that support you and what you’re doing.” “If they’re giving me their best, it’s only fair I execute to the best of my ability, whatever that may be, and for a number of years, that’s been winning.” Hardwired as a competitor, the excuses that could be used weren’t an option for Alise.
That competitor mentality is taking Alise to new heights as she continues to dominate the Women Pro ranks. With new challenges come new opportunities to conquer them, each year and each race different, as she strives to continue her spot as a competitor. Going into the 18th year
PULL BMX Magazine 21
of her pro career and the 32nd year of her life, Alise knows the retirement question is going to be tossed around. However, if you’re going fast, you’re going fast. “Am I past my physical prime in life? Yeah, maybe, but I still keep doing better in my training and rising to different challenges.” Taking seven months off of Alise level training after the Tokyo Olympics, she once again set a goal. Twelve weeks out from the World Championships, the work began again. Ticking off boxes, securing wins, and proving that she could bounce back after the 2021 season. With a late start to the season and securing her score in an eight-win streak, The Beast was back and ready to take on an international field in Tulsa. A fulfilling accomplishment hoisting up her 10th silver cup after a night show clean sweep and a previous season that didn’t go the way she planned, Alise looks to the future with new and exciting challenges. “For me, it’s kind of exciting because I keep getting asked, “Oh, are you done yet?” or last year when some people felt that I should retire, I was washed up, or that night time had come and passed. Now I can see how long I can keep it going and keep competing at this level.” In a sobering and Oh wow, we’re getting old moment, Alise brought up that some of the new racers coming into the pro ranks were born in her rookie year of 2006. “The level keeps rising, and that’s what I take away from my career, and what excites me going forward. Continuing to be successful, consistency, and always being a contender.”
Winning the day and continuing to be better than the day before are the main goals
for Willoughby’s future. And while matching her career number of 11, with 11 National No. 1 Pro Titles is possible, The Beast is proud of her career and looks to continue to be that role model for the next generation of racers. “We were that inaugural class of racers who went through that Olympic cycle and paved a path of proving you can make a living doing this sport. Just continuing to be that face and representation that they too can do bigger and better things is important to me and the legacy side of it.”
From watching Sam’s journey into the coaching role for Team Australia, seeing Cam Wood start and continue his Pro career, and sharing the Willoughby journey through the documentary, hopefully releasing in the US in the near future, new paths are beginning to open up for the Willoughbys, and racing is just one road in that forever-evolving pathway. A road that in a certain way, feels familiar, has shown itself is the road for 2023 and the future. With the brand’s homegrown and #SeeingDaylight monicker, Willoughby is looking at the new partnership with Daylight Cycles, not as a reset, but as a homecoming. After growing up racing the Huvards as kids, Alise has come full circle to her roots as she prepares for the future on the SoCal-made brand.
As the years go on for Alise and new partnerships like Daylight,
come onto the headlines of BMX media outlets, a constant remains, being a professional athlete takes a lot of work. “It’s the things behind closed doors that people don’t see all the time that you want people to appreciate, and on the professional side, it’s not easy, and making a living at doing this is not easy. There’s a lot of risks involved, and it’s a lot of appreciation of how difficult longevity is now.” When you read the meaningful events Alise pointed out as her most memorable races, it’s not the result that made those events. Everything you don’t see on the track, from the stress of a sick family member, the mental toughness to bounce back after a low point, and the physical exhaustion it takes to remain on top, makes Alise “The Beast” Willoughby.

The five time champ, Joris Daudet, showcases his first straight speed during the second main of the Men Pro main event.
The stage was set, the pits were full, and the 2022 USA BMX National Series’s final laps charged onto the Tulsa track. With a different style of Grands track awaiting racers, to be successful, to be successful, raw power and race craft were needed above all else. While some couldn’t ditch the negativity about the track design, the ones who did found fast laps and end-of-season glory.
The action kicked off HOT, with the pro ranks taking on their final chance to bump their scores going into the Friday Night show. Bar banging and pre-Grands prep shining, the Daudet show was the main story through the ROC as the Frenchman took each lap with a purpose. That purpose? Making history as the first ever 5x USA BMX National No.1 Men Pro. Going five for six in winning laps, the veteran experience is playing perfectly into the #WinWithChase monicker.
As Kennedy and Mclean missed the main event, a certain gold medalist also missed out, leaving only Daudet, Wood, and Sharrah to fight for that last-minute score. To the first turn, Daudet stomped his mark of domination while getting the elbow in front of Mongoose’s Cam Wood into turn one. With Daudet leading the way, Arthur Pilard followed his fellow Frenchman to the podium as Anthony Bucardo battled down the second straight to lock in a
bottom step on the podium. With so much action in only a 27.864-second lap, the Men Pro battles were ready to ramp it up again as they prepare for the night show and the 2022 USA BMX National No.1 Title. He was the first man to ever do it, and he does it after a whirlwind year. Coming into the Greatest Race on Earth in the overall four spots, Joris quickly showed his Tulsa dominance taking home the ROC win and the second place at the Friday night Pro Championship Final. Racing for Chase Bicycles and the BMX Racing Group Store, out of Corona, CA, by way of France, your 5x National No.1 Men Pro, JORIS DAUDET.
As the best of the best geared up for their laps, it was all eyes on the World/Defending Champ, the World Cup Queen, and the USA BMX Dominator. While each brought winning laps and bar-banging battles, the USA BMX dominator, Alise Willoughby, took the ROC win.
Throughout the day, Willoughby and Laura Smulders went head to head with first straight battles that tested the raw power each competitor brought to the field. Joining them in their Women Pro power were familiar kits mixing up the points chase. Molly Simpson and Lauren Reynolds caught our eye as two who could make a run at leading

the Women Pro main event. Reynolds came out strong in all three rounds. The Answer BMX racer had the track dialed in. Hitting her marks into the semi and onto the main with the third gate pick, she couldn’t avoid the 30’ squeeze from the Canadian Molly Simpson. Getting an elbow in front and moving over to the inside, Simpson locked in behind Willoughby for a wire-to-wire second place in front of Laura Smulders, completing the ROC podium.
But where was the defending champ? With gate eight, Stancil was stuck on the outside down the first straight. Staying wide into turn one
left her to battle through the pack, and while doing so, a door opened into turn two. However, that door quickly shut mid-air, forcing her to check up and live to fight on in the big show on Friday.
With two hands up, that’s how many times “The Beast” Alise Willoughby has crossed the Grand Nationals finish line a champion. Undoubtedly the best to ever do it, Willoughby battles through early and late-season injury to lock in her 10th USA BMX Women Pro Title and did it by putting down a clean sweep in the total point main events. The Minnesota native and SoCal training
legend is once again your USA BMX National No.1 Women Pro.
But now it’s time for the fan favorite, the class that wows and excites the crowd on those early race mornings, Vet Pro. With the current points leader taking his final day of RnR before the big show, the rest of the Vet Pro field was ready to battle it out from the jump. Early on in rounds, the top dogs of the day were beginning to emerge.
With Emilio Falla, Alan Hudson, Jeff Upshaw, Cal Strickland, and Tyler Brown all locking in some impressive low scores, it was The Captain,

Nic Long, that had the fan’ hearts as he battled back for a second and third-round win after a misstep down the first straight in round one. But wait, there’s more. In both the quarters and semi, he got caught up in crashes leaving him to battle from a dead stop. Making it on, with a line grabbing fourth in quarters, his day was over in semis due to a turn two pile up.
Looking at the Vet Pro main, we might see some beef brewing. As the pack charged to the first turn, inside to outside, it went Falla, Hudson, and Strickland, with Upshaw tucking into the four spot. After a back wheel spin out from Falla allowed Hudson to make the pass, Falla was in defense mode down the fourth straight. Giving Upshaw a little love over the set-up jump, Big Jeff returned the favor into turn four with a cross jump to steal Falla’s line and secure the two spot behind “Hot Pants” Hudson. While he was only 20 days out from his crash at a Pro/Am, the BMX world was unsure if he would even be able to race, but the Alabama Slamma wouldn’t
a “small” setback stifle his night. Dominating from the first gate drop on Friday, Barry Nobles took charge and monopolized all the way to the main stage. Doing it for Chase Bicycles, the Alabama man, Barry Nobles, is your 2022 USA BMX National No.1 Vet Pro.
The pros may have brought the crowds into the Friday night show, but the Sunday night crowd was there for the pure and raw excitement of the USA BMX amateur action.
From two rounds of 957 motos, 1/16th, 1/8th, quarters, and semis, the final eight racers in our 126 main events immerge from behind the curtain to lock and load into the glory of the 2022 Grand Nationals. Before we get into the title classes, let’s look at the Mixed Open and Open laps that presented themselves as the bar-banging appetizers for the night.
Charging out of the gate for the first mixed open main of the night, the young guns of 6 & under mixed open went five wide into turn one and only. With only a sin gle available spot on top,
the fast Nathan Larsen survived the inside squeeze to take the wire-towire win. The racers in the following race were unable to survive the squeeze when gate sevens Oklahoma native, Dash Loveless, shot out like a cannon in 7-8 Mixed Open. With a strong charge coming from Peyton Spanel on the second-place spot, the Okie was able to fend off the LSG colors as he lunged to the win at the line. As our friend Jim Riley likes to say, the 15-16 Mixed Open class was in a BigTime Hurry as Lily Greenough went out front and stayed there, similar to the hard-charging 13-14 Open class with Luke Brooke-Smith stretching his lead from the moment he hit the 30 foot.
The Open classes wrapped up, and the first silver cup was on the line. For Sean Carvajal’s LDC, the shining one, Diamond Lily Ashley took the pressure

title and the first to do it on Chilao Yoshimura Pedals. With the NAT 1 plate out of contention, the Women’s Cruiser classes charged for the glory and their fight for the NAG 1 plate on the line. For 13-14 and 1516 Girls Cruiser coming down the main event finish, Taylor Rungatis and Danica Anderson didn’t disappoint as they both made the pass for the win and the NAG 1 plate. The cruiser dominators continued to show out as the age and speed grew. Dominators like Casey Allen from Desoto, who fended off the pack down the first straight, and
Chrissy Piper, who took some time away from the High Five BMX page to lead their laps from start to finish. The final women’s cruiser race was about to drop for the 2023 season, and all eyes were on the big battle between Donna Gatz and Mama Margie Kaminski. Gatz getting off to an early lead in and out of turns one and two, the New York racer of Kaminski wasn’t going down without a fight. Making up two bike lengths down the fourth straight, the inside move from Kaminski put Gatz into high-low mode, where she took back the lead over the final table

Another class and another title chase begin. The boy’s cruiser chase was all about the young guns in 2022, with one YOUNG gun standing out from the rest. J&R Bicycles’ Cody Young locked up the title chase quickly, as he shot out of the gate with 2021 Cruiser champ Greyson Sneed to his outside and the Fulltilt ride further down the line to his inside. With red and white leading the pack, the grey kit of Howell was giving up no room for mistake as they charged to the line. The legs stopped spinning, and the brake pads squealed as Punta Gorda’s own Cody Young won the day and the year with the Cruiser title. As the gates continued to drop and the battles continued, a few races were seared into our minds. No, not the near miss between Ryder Robinett and Wahley on the inside of turn three, but the outstanding performance from Cash Strickland in that same 14 Cruiser main event. Outpowering some heavy hitters down the first straight, Strickland was cool, calm, and collected as he stretched out his lead in the clean air. With a little more bar-to-bar action, the 17-20 cruiser class was rocked
by the BMX Shark out of the middle. Coming out of gate four, Aaron Blee used the middle lane expressway to rail around the first turn and into a pull position through the rest of the track. Racing out of Grand Junction, Colorado, we’re excited to see this kid’s future. Jumping a few races down the shoots to the 36-40 Cruiser class, the gate-wide battle turned into a one-man show as the pack was left to scramble in the second turn missing Tarik Assagai out front. The dive low by Brandon Kintzler may have ended in the dirt, but you can’t blame a guy for trying in the STACKED 36-40 Cruiser class. On to the final cruiser lap of the season, Hall of Famers, AAs in the heyday, and hard chargers in 2022, the 61& Over class brought the power with a Woody v. Tuni showdown. A
decade-long battle saw Woodruff out front with the big man of Henry gaining speed fast. A tight final turn and a wheel buzz kept Woody out front, and the battle to continue into the 2023 season.
If anything gets the crowd to its feet, you know it will be the Grindle call out with the #GirlsClub on deck. Making an impact early on in the Expert Girl main events was The Princess Isabella Smith. With a hard charger from gate to winner’s circle, Smith fought off the late race effort from Remy The Rockstar

Sessa to lock up the win for her hometown of Henderson, NV. From one winning Princess to the next, Kira Vescuso took on the 8-yearolds with an impressive pointsleading lap. While Stella Rodriguez ended the chance for a triple Princess win by making the late race move into turn four, the sole racer to triple at the Grands was about to hit the track. In a heated battle down the first straight, Jemma Tollefson found herself tucked behind the Clayborn ride of Vida De Vira. Taking notes from the race before, Tollefson found the open door down low in turn four to complete the triple and leave Tulsa with some big-time hardware. But the biggest hardware of the night was still up for grabs, and it all came down to the defending champ and the future rookie pro, Ava Corley and Breanna Winter. The year-long hunt came down to Ava with BA’s voice saying that now legendary phrase. With anything less than a victory, Winter would have a shot, but in true defending champ fashion, Corley wrapped it up right then and there. In what seemed like a slow-motion sequence, that ominous, “With a win and only a win,”
phrase played over top until Corley made the move. An eruption of cheers filled the arena as the BMX Shark led the battle-heavy class, and they only grew as Corley rounded the final turn for the finish line. With the Title secured tightly in Corley’s arms, the Rockstar/Rift/Tangent ride of Winter knew this next lap wasn’t for a title; it was for her. Trailing through the track’s first half, Winter found the race line to the front and powered the outside lane to the 17-20 Expert Women win. As the ladies charged on, the back-toback wins began to be completed. All in a row, Devin Murphy, Courtney Tomei, and Chrissy Piper laid down their speed to cap off their 2022 season.
With 19 mains remaining of the 2022 season, 152 racers loading into the gate, and only one National title to be earned, the action was destined for the history books. From Jaxson Howell getting redemption with a big 9 Expert win to Santiago Figueroa Bernier bringing the 11 Expert back to the North for

Quebec, the action was just beginning to heat up. With constant updates from BA, the title chase came down to not a win but a podium. For the first time since our BMX history experts can remember, the Amateur National title was crowned to the third-place racer. Playing it smart, knowing he had made the necessary moves throughout the year, Drew Polk has never been so excited for a third place, but at the 2022 Grand Nationals, he
turned that third into a silver cup and stamped his place in the history books. As Grindle’s final remarks thanked the racers, workers, and fans for a great season, the legends of 51 & over experts got prepped to close out the night. The class dominator, Renato Silva, and one of the youngsters of the class, Chris Kennedy, lined up side by side to battle through the track with the Trackside
ride in tow. With the Blackcrown BMX ride taking the top spot, followed by Silva on the two, these experienced riders put the perfect cap on an excellent season of BMX racing. Until January 2023.

LAS(T) VEGAS
For 47 days, the BMX world recovered and prepared for the beginning of the season and the end of an era. For the past 13 years, the season opener (apart from 2021 due to covid restrictions in Vegas) has been at the South Point Hotel and Casino. With the news of the last hurrah going down to kick off the season, racers from across the country showed up and showed out for one of the most action-packed race weekends to date.
The Silver Dollar charm is that short-track intensity. Pure horsepower down and around to the holeshot gives wintertime racers a chance to show off their strength from off-season gym time without their stamina, or lack thereof, getting in the way of fast lap times. The finalé in Vegas brought a deep and lippy indoor build to test the racer’s abilities and give those on point the advantage as long as you didn’t give up too much of your inside. Let’s get into the action and find the classes who came into the new season ready to make the BMX gamble.
New to the National scene, but familiar throughout the BMX world, the Pro/Am classes joined the National schedule, with Tangent coming on as the Title sponsor to the laps. Hungry pros and ams lined up at the gate to put on a show fit for the Vegas strip, and if we had anything to say, they would have a lifetime residency. National No.1 Amateur Drew Polk, Grands winner Jason Noordam, and Bassett Racing’s Gus Vicuna were among the first to test the Pro/Am waters. The three young guns joined the Vet Pros and former Pro Open regulars Alan Hudson and Emilio Falla, at the front of the pack through rounds. Amateur domination in Semis brought all eyes on Noordam and Polk as the Polk-led pack followed behind Noordam into turn two. With his dirt turn experience, Polk found the extra speed to give the new Factory Fulltilt/Radio pressure into the final turn. A mix of Noordam cutting down just slightly and Polk’s added speed while hitting front wheel to back foot, both racers went down just before the final jump allowing Gus Vicuna to get around the

carnage for the first-ever Tangent Pro/Am Main event win. With Vicuna following it up wire to wire on Saturday, the Bassett rider looks to have finally put the pieces together during the off-season. On the ladies’ side of the Tangent Pro/Am laps, it was the Factory Fulltilt/Radio showdown. Olivia Armstrong took the clean sweep win on Friday, but with the rider count jumping to 13 on Saturday, the ladies battled for a spot in the day two main event. It was there when Mckenzie Gayheart swooped low in the third turn for the win.
A debut of the new classes wasn’t the only reveal that went down in Vegas. The season opener also brought the new kits charging around the track. While they debuted them at Grands, the Profile “Reds” were rocked all weekend long by Rowdy Holzer as he lit up the weekend with a double-double following a Friday blast from the ocean predators. The

BMX Sharks debuted their new kits with Friday blues and Saturday blue and reds; A blood in the water reference, perhaps? Another race day look upgrade was seen on the NorCal Next Generation’s Tarik Assagai and Hidi Cramer. With the teammate clean sweep in class and cruiser, the green sleeves of Assagai and Cramer were lighting up the front of the pack. On the other side of the country, the design team from Answer BMX and Ssquared switched it up. Danica Anderson was flying high as usual, but this year the Answer kits are a pop of color a dirt track needs. Answer BMX goes lime green and baby blue on Friday with a classic royal blue on Saturday/Sunday. The Ssquared division of the Sawyer racing empire is staying simple with white and black rocked by the new team member, Brooklyn Van Renselaar, as she took home the 15-16x Girls win on Friday Night. While the final gate drop inside the South Point Hotel and Casino slammed down and the 56 & Over class charged to the line with Eric Sweets at the point, the reflection began. Bar-banging excitement, late-night Steak N Shake runs, calories burned on the Spazmatics dance floor, and memories that will last a lifetime; Thank you, South Point. We hope to see you again soon.

BEYOND THE BERM
ROCK ISLAND INDOOR BMX & MISSISSIPPI VALLEY BMX RACEWAY
For this edition of Beyond the Berm, we’re taking you to two of the only tracks in the country that don’t have berms: Rock Island Indoor BMX in Illinois and the Mississippi Valley BMX Raceway in Iowa.
Both tracks will take you back to the early days of indoor BMX racing, from the sparks flying as pedals hit the concrete floor to the sounds of slick tires on the wooden jumps. Sometimes you can even smell the burnt rubber in the corners.
“The sound of the jumps, it’s in our heads from 40 years ago,” says Track Operator Paul DePauw, who runs both the Rock Island and Mississippi Valley indoors in addition to East Moline BMX in Illinois.
Paul started racing in Illinois in 1981, and when the weather got cold, he went to the concrete. “In our area, this is what we do,” he says.
Paul has raced indoors from Iowa to New Jersey. He raced the Jag World Championships on a concrete floor in Indianapolis, and he turned expert on a tile floor. Now, he says, “It’s part of my DNA.”
Paul is passionate about this style of racing, so when he found the perfect building in Rock Island, Illinois in 2011, he was holding races there less than a month later. Rock Island Indoor BMX started as an NBL track, and they would host double-headers a couple nights a week. Now, Rock Island holds seven races a year in just 11 days.
One of these races is an Illinois State Qualifier, held on New Year’s Day. This year, they hosted over 300 riders from nine states! It’s becoming a tradition for many families in the area.
So why are people flocking to Rock Island, Illinois on New Year’s Day?
“The racing is insane,” says Paul. “Every moto is packed with crazy stuff.”
And this is all by design.
“I know the magic formula. It’s about 550 feet. That keeps everybody in the entire race. It’s never a done deal.”
From the drop of the Pro Gate, it’s a 135-foot sprint to the first turn: No jumps. The inside riders have to brake a little harder than those on the outside, so everybody comes together.
USABMX.COM H VOL. 13 / ISS. 1 66
Then they have to navigate a split-second straightaway. There’s a big Freshpark tabletop on the inside and a shorter tabletop on the outside, and both lines could be faster in different scenarios. That’s just one of the reasons that Paul calls racing here a high-speed BMX chess game.
After riders bunch up again in the second corner, they ride over two small tabletops on the third straightaway before the tight last turn. It’s make-or-break here, although everyone has to brake hard to get through.
Riders then have to get on the pedals (from basically a dead stop) to a gnarly little wooden double before they sprint to the finish line.
Paul thinks these might be the shortest tracks in the world, but they are action-packed the whole way through. “People are going crazy during these races. It’s like an MMA fight or something.”
The energy and excitement are what keep Paul in the sport, but what he takes in, he dishes it right back out.
Paul was going to guitar school in Hollywood before he came back home and started the track in East Moline, and he brings a bit of showmanship to BMX. Whether it’s the tracks he designs, his announcing, or his racing, it’s all awesome to watch (I highly recommend you watch his race against Mike Savage at Rock Island. It’s on East Moline’s Facebook page).
Paul’s now in his 32nd year as a TO, but even with all that experience and charisma, he can’t run three tracks alone.
“I’ve worked with hundreds of killer people over the years to do the crazy stuff we’ve done,” Paul says.
And the stuff they’re doing at these indoors is crazy. All the wooden jumps were hand-built by volunteers, and it only takes them a couple of hours to set it all up and tear it all down.
These races run like a well-oiled machine, so when they found another building at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Iowa, they booked it for three straight weekends after the season finished at Rock Island. And while you’d think that two buildings with concrete floors that are about the same size would ride the same, they don’t!
“That’s a different terrain over there, and we turn to the right in Iowa. Mississippi Valley has trickier concrete. It’s more stop-and-go.”
Talking about the differences between the two buildings got Paul reminiscing about all the surfaces he used to race on, from tile floors with chunks taken out in the corners to slippery concrete with Coke syrup spilled on it to make it grippier. In comparison, dirt is pretty reliable.
“The skillset at the indoor track is worth its weight in gold transferring to an outdoor track.” Paul says, and he hopes that more people catch on.
“I would love a flat turn series, or at least one more track. We would all go.”
Paul calls this style of racing “the most unique and underrated form of BMX in the Universe,” and I think you have to see it to believe it. You can check watch the entire New Year’s race on the East Moline BMX Speedway Youtube Page or experience it yourself at the Mississippi Valley BMX raceway on February 12th at the only flat-turn Gold Cup Qualifier on the calendar.

Dear Gabi, Welcome to 2023!!
DID YOU KNOW?
When looking up your points on the website, please be sure to select the correct year you want to view in the drop down box!!
• REMEMBER...the number to the left of your name in the 2022 final district points is your new bike number. If you have an earned number from 2022 you must run that earned number!
• You will know when you get that move up win before we do, the easiest way to keep track is to keep a pocket calendar with your gear bag and on the day you race note the track and your finish!
• Your age on the website is posted based on the points you are looking at – District will show your age at the end of the season 12/15; State/Provincial will show your age at your state/provincial final; Gold Cup will show your age at the Gold Cup final for your region.
• SIG MISSING…means we did not receive the signed application, go to the website, login to your online profile, click on Riders and then on Submit Digital Signature and follow the prompts!
• If you move, you still have to contact Membership to get your address changed on your membership record and continue to receive the magazine (for first family memberships).
• Thank you for your support of BMX, great luck to you all this season and remember...BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN!
