Expert Picks
01
Claire Foster’s Picks 01 Promises Promises (A36)
04 brandnative (E82)
The innovative use of materials is what immediately struck me with the collection from Promises Promises, and taps into the Craftsman trend for the season. The combination of new textures with modernist jewellery designs offers something new to add into jewellery selections.
The colours and patterns of these intricate handmade bags are so on-trend for 2016/17, it’s impossible not to include them in my top picks. The accessories world is obsessed with craft and artisanal products right now and the range of styles and colours from brandnative means that there are options for a wide market range. The bucket bag style is definitely one to invest in.
02 Charles of Lloyd (C31) After Charles of Lloyd’s debut at Pulse last year, I am really excited to see the new products they will be bringing this year. The colour and pattern used in the fashion and interior collections are really inspiring and feel super fresh.
03 Rebecca Gladstone (A43) I love the simplicity of this brand’s jewellery that channels the popular minimalist jewellery trend, in a wearable everyday way. The gold circle earrings are a personal must-have!
16
02
05 Su Owen (E84) There is a real resurgence happening for printed scarves and Su Owen’s whimsical designs are at the top of my wish list. You can’t help but be drawn into the beautiful colours and imaginative illustrations.

Katie Law’s Picks
01 Space and Shape (A9)
Katie Law Deputy Literary Editor, Design Trends & Feature Writer London Evening Standard At the Standard since 1989, Katie writes the DesignSpy Column for Homes and Property and edits My Design London.
Furniture that has clean modern lines, is functional and performs in clever ways is surprisingly hard to find, so this is a particularly welcome addition to Pulse this year. I’m a great fan of flexible furniture that can be moved around the room, such as the wall ladder from which to hang shoes or clothes.
02 Bespoke Verse (C27) Proving that design can be witty, as well as good looking and functional, Bespoke Verse has created a thoughtful collection of home products including ceramics, stationery and coasters, using crisp, clean graphics, minimal colours and rather brilliant one-liners. This suggests that the team behind it has real brains as well as a crystal clear eye for beauty.
03 Noted UK (H19) Japanese greens in a brown paper bag (lined with plastic), which you can grow straight from soil to mouth from the comfort of your kitchen window sill. This
isn’t just about the packaging, although I really like its eco-friendly appearance too. I’d love to stick a set of these straight onto my window sill and see what happens.
04 Ja unendlich (G77b) While clearly having roots in Japanese design, these German cast iron teapots are wholly original thanks to the striking enamelled colours and variety of shapes they come in, from cadmium yellow to brilliant mint green. They look lovely and, unlike most of our homegrown ceramic tea pots, have the advantage of keeping tea piping hot.
05 Thornback & Peel (H42) This design duo launched their business with one simple but brilliant idea, which was to combine two seemingly random objects to make an attractive print design. Anyone fancy a chair upholstered in grey pigeons and pink jelly? Who knew that cabbages and rabbits, or pigs and mushrooms went so well together? They keep innovating too so manage to stay ahead of the rash of imitators.

Sania Pell’s Picks
Expert Picks
Sania Pell Freelance Interior Stylist, Creative Director and Best-Selling Author Sania is known for bringing a unique creative aspect to photo shoots for national publications including Elle Decoration and The Guardian. She is also author of the best-selling book The Homemade Home and The Homemade Home for Children.
01 Just Trade (A75)
04 Lapuan Kankurit Oy
Brass has been a big trend in interiors for a while, and is now following through into fashion. The geometric design of this necklace is minimal yet still makes a statement, plus it’s made by a fair trade project in Peru, making it a guilt-free purchase.
(G14) This design is interesting as it can be used as a blanket or a tablecloth – the buyer gets to decide. Made of a high-quality linen-cotton, the pattern looks like a hand-drawn patchwork, which feels quite unique.
02 HJEM (B18) The print on this cushion looks abstract, but is actually a photograph – it’s interesting how the pattern has been placed at the bottom. It will fit equally well into a living room, bedroom or kid’s room, making it super adaptable.
03 Miss Knit Nat (E66) This scarf puts a modern spin on a traditional Fair Isle pattern by using it as a border. Likely to appeal to a wide age range, it’s made of quality hand-spun lambswool, which also means it will last a lifetime.

05 Meri Meri (G28) This sweet Betsy collection of accessories will delight parents who wish to create a stylish yet fun children’s party. I would suggest using a plain setting and allowing the patterned hats, party bags and napkins to do the talking.

GRAPHIC PATTERN – CANDY PASTELS – PLAYFUL – DYNAMIC – BOLD SHAPES The Memphis movement changed the face of design in the 1980s, reintroducing bold colour and decoration. It questioned conventional good taste by combining an eclectic source of influences. This new interpretation of Memphis gives a contemporary twist to a retro look, making a dynamic statement and celebrates a maximalist approach to design.

CLEAN – BALANCE – STRUCTURE – ABSTRACT – UTILITY – GRAPHIC In reaction to our increasingly hectic lives, we have a renewed desire to stand still and appreciate. We seek a return to clarity by eliminating distraction and excess ornament. Mid-century design is re-considered for a contemporary consumer, rejecting decoration in favour of simplified forms, clean surfaces and abstracted geometrics.

Coastal Simplicity
MODERN RUSTIC – HONEST – FRESH – NATURAL – AUTHENTIC – QUIET The British seaside is experiencing a resurgence in popularity and modern appeal. City dwellers are leaving urban environments and expensive living costs behind to escape to the coast. There is a focus on integrity and utility, channelling the handcrafted and rustic aesthetic of the shore. Raw materials and honest design are integral in creating a strong connection to nature.

Try bold colours in small dark rooms “We always long to create light and space in dark rooms but by using a white to do this, you create small, dark, dull rooms. Instead, embrace nature and use a strong colour like Inchyra Blue or Brassica to create a sense of drama.” Joa Studholme, Farrow & Ball ShopTalk on Monday 16 May at 12:00

Nyumbani Design — C64 The Tanzanian-based jewellery label creates contemporary wooden pieces of wearable art through geometric shapes and surface experimentation. “When I moved to Dar es Salaam, I began working within the retail industry, collaborating with local artists and designers in Tanzania” explains founder Kerry Glanfield. “Over time I noticed that while wooden sculptures were commonplace in Tanzania, there was an absence in the market for crafting indigenous woods in a more contemporary fashion. I continued to develop and experiment with locally sourced trees, considering structure, colour and texture. As I did this, the reality of my business started to take shape.”
How It’s Made Good design is about more than just a beautiful product. Now more than ever, your customers are buying products with a story. From innovative techniques to cutting-edge materials, Pulse exhibitors make great design with a real purpose. Discover two of the many stories that make the products you find at Pulse unique.
Nyumbani Design’s new collection, Molecular Matter, will be on show at Pulse and is inspired by the intricacies of molecular theory, exploring environments and employing the laws of science to create form and silhouettes.
ARTHOUSE Meath — H82 ARTHOUSE Meath is a thriving non-profit business and social enterprise that showcases the talents and skills of people – artists – that live with complex epilepsy, learning and physical difficulties. Each week, 70 artists work alongside instructors to create artworks and designer products ranging from hand-printed cards, fine bone china, cushions, soaps, candles, kitchen ware and accessories. “In 1999 I started to run workshops for adults with severe epilepsy, learning and physical difficulties” explains founder Becky Sheraidah. “They didn’t have much belief in themselves and their skills were not recognised, just because they needed 24-hour care. I felt we could easily make a change.” The ethos driving ARTHOUSE Meath is inclusion, acceptance and celebrating differences. It is changing attitudes towards adults living with severe epilepsy or learning/physical difficulties, one artwork at a time.

I used to freelance as a print designer in the fashion industry and setup my label two years ago when I realised I had a feminine and unique style of design. What inspired you to go into design? It was sort of accidental! From winning competitions, blogging and sharing my designs, people kept remarking that you could tell it was a ‘Nikki Strange print’. I started selling a small range of phone cases on Etsy. I gradually could reinvest and launch new designs. It was quite exciting as it happened very naturally and allowed me to learn so much on the way. Discover the new functional stationery range by Nikki Strange at Pulse on stand B15.

Fiona Walker My name is Fiona Walker, founder of Fiona Walker England and S-c Brands (Scandi-chic). We create design-led home and seasonal collections, built on the philosophy to produce uniquely handcrafted items using traditional methods. What inspired you to go into design? I created Scandi-chic in 2006 and eight years later, I decided to rekindle my desire to design and try something new by creating the brand Fiona Walker England.

Nadia Newton I’m Nadia Newton, founder of Penelope Hope, an up-and-coming luxury textiles and homeware brand. Products include British-made cushions, lampshades, upholstered furniture and fabric. What inspired you to go into design? I set up Penelope Hope after renovating my house. I struggled to find good quality fabrics and soft furnishings in bold and bright colours, so I decided to design my own collection. I was ready to get my teeth stuck into something new after being a full time mum for seven years. I went to study Textile Print Design at Central St Martins, attended reupholstery classes and completed online design related courses to further my knowledge and prepare me for running my own business.
I truly think design is in-built: from an early age I had an interest in all things arty. I was happiest ‘doing’ things and pretty quickly I found sewing was for me. My first product was a little red breasted robin decoration. Discover the new Fiona Walker England collection at Pulse alongside S-c Brands (formerly Scandi-chic) who are celebrating their 10th birthday on stand G20.
