Take a closer look at two hot summer trends.

02

Cool, Graphic Monochrome

01

Monochrome never really goes away; it’s just a question of re-interpreting this classic black and white combo in clever new ways. Monochrome is big design news on the high street already this season, so it’s unsurprising that it is one of the strongest looks at Pulse. 01 —Castara Designs, C13 02—Karin Akesson, D19

Playful Accessories Bright colours, cute characters and kitsch references are becoming the key notes of one of the most playful fashion trends we have seen in a long time. The fashion industry is embracing a new joyful sense of humour, putting the fun back into fashion. Introducing this attention-grabbing fashion accessory trend in-store is sure to make for a talking point with customers.

Warm Metals

01

Using warm metals in homeware products will be a trend that continues well beyond 2015 and will have particular emphasis for Autumn/Winter. This will range from entirely copper products to just a touch of gold detailing. Adding trims or foiling in rose gold adds understated luxury to decorative accessories, giftware and stationery, which looks beautiful in contrast with inky blues for the festive period. 01 —Holly’s House, H35 02—Lollipop Designs, L32

Hand-rendered Type Typography continues to be important within the home, particularly for artwork and stationery. For Autumn/Winter, hand-rendered lettering is key. This provides a personal touch and taps into the consumer’s desire for quality, crafted goods. Messages are positive and embrace themes of adventure, self-empowerment and freedom.

7

01 —Anna Joe Design, A20 02—Wild Planet Products, K71

Reference to Nature Bringing outdoor references into the home is a big theme for the Autumn/Winter season. Surrounding ourselves with natural elements creates calming and soothing spaces. Motifs inspired by woodland environments such as leaves, plants and trees work well across soft furnishings, tableware, décor and gifts.

01

02

03—Bespo, B38 04—Grand Illusions, F56

03

Simple Repeats This season, repeat patterns for homeware products use simple geometric shapes. Overlapped shape outlines in monochrome provide a subtle and sophisticated approach to this trend. For a more bold and playful look, opt for colour-blocked prisms in a brighter tonal palette.

Grace takes a step towards the feminine, with a distinctly decorative and embellished update for women and a hint at dandy-style dressing and beautiful, legacy accessories for men.

01 —Mara Jewellery, B78 02—Jolie Lola, A81

Artisan craftsmanship, heritage manufacturing and rare artistry in design is key. This trend is about beautiful investment pieces, influenced by ancient techniques. The Baroque and Bohemian periods are important reference points, with opulence and adornment underpinning the mood of this trend.

Rich, jewel tones, ancient gold, deep navy, and time-worn chestnut brown are interrupted by bold primary bright red and acidic jade, striking a balance between the old world and the new. For women, gemstone, brocade and beading become highlight embellishments for bags and small accessories, while jewellery looks to ornate cocktail jewels for inspiration. Exotic look leathers and plush furs in surreal colours are also important materials within the Grace trend, bridging the gap between the ancient inspiration and contemporary updates.

02

Hinting at the autumn season, the Whimsical trend is grounded in a truly feminine attitude. Inspired by vintage, romantic references and an exploration of traditional craftsmanship, this is a beautifully decorative direction for accessories. The colour palette is a refreshingly pale pastel combination of light rose, baby blue, sugary lilac and light fawn, interrupted by on-trend jade and navy blue. For men the key colours centre on pale camel and contemporary alabaster, complemented with masculine racing green, and lichen.

04

Filigree metals, patch work leathers, lace and embroidery techniques adorn key items while the vintage influence is felt in must-have items to include the retro day bag for women, heritage neckwear and timeless watches for men. Sentimental jewellery that is both pretty and thoughtful. Lockets, vintage keepsakes and momentos all illustrate the heartfelt themes of Whimsical. 03

The many secret shops that make up London’s retail character are the destination boutiques for canny shoppers who like the idea of a private address book, and keeping things under wraps.

— For the full line-up of inspiring speakers, turn to the next page. —

This is all very well, but independents need as much help as they can get to raise their profile and provide some of the services – such as same day delivery – that are now standard in the department stores. Maxim Berglund (co-founder of StreetHub) uncovers how working together with the help of technology can help you gain an edge over the larger chains and online shops. 12pm, Tuesday 12 May in the ShopTalk Theatre at Pulse

Katie Law — Design writer, London Evening Standard Unafraid of a bit of print and pattern, Katie has selected her top LIVING products that are bang on trend.

Hipster Spinster Stand K35a Are they Scandi or are they Scottish? What an original and imaginative way of bringing this traditional pattern to tabletops and I especially love the blue.

Kith and Kin Stand K50 With its verdant green colour palette and lush foliage, this design is one of my favourites. It encapsulates all that’s best about digital printing and its tropical theme is bang on trend.

Lapuan Kankurit Stand G14 With its strong contrast between an icy blue and white palette and tactile warm fabric, this is a really original take on the currently popular geo trend. I want to wrap up in this!

Pulse has a new home Pulse is making Olympia London its home. Come and visit from Sunday 10 to Tuesday 12 May. Doors open at 9.30am and close at 6.00pm (except on the Tuesday when we close a little earlier at 5.00pm.) You’ll find a treasure trove of unique, irresistible products, trends and retail insight at: Olympia Grand Olympia London Hammersmith Road Kensington London W14 8UX

Travel You can reach us easily from across the UK and you’ll find that public transport is the best and easiest way to get here. Olympia is the only venue in London with a dedicated rail station – Kensington (Olympia), which is served by the London Overground and National Rail networks. A further four Underground lines are connected, only a short journey away. You’ll find TFL to be the most useful resource in planning your journey to Olympia; for more information visit: www.tfl.gov.uk/ journeyplanner

Entry policy

Entry is free as long as you pre-register for the event online at pulse-london.com/magazine. Entry tickets purchased at the door are £20. Pulse is strictly a trade-only event where orders are taken. There is no admittance to general members of the public and proof of trade may be requested upon entry. However, we do recognise that you might be in the process of setting up your new and exciting business. In this instance, please do join us but remember that it is not possible to purchase products directly from stands. We love kids and know that if you visit the show, you may have offspring in tow… particularly on a Sunday! Under 16’s do not require an entry badge but we do ask that they remain accompanied by an adult at all times.

London We might be biased but London is truly the best city in the world and you’ll find that Olympia is a great base for exploring Kensington and West London. Within a few minutes’ walk, a short bus ride away, or a stop or two from Olympia’s rail station, you’ll find elegant shops, world-class museums, buzzing bars and restaurants and beautiful open spaces. To find out more, visit: www.timeout.com/london

Accommodation Zibrant, our official accommodation partner, have put together a unique booking tool that shows the best deals near Olympia London. To book your stay, simply visit: pulse-london.com/the-show/accommodation

EXPERIENCE THE QUALITY AT STAND A61A #PROTECTYOUREARS

A

ndy Hau, London-based designer and director of A.H.A. Design is proud to be debuting at this year’s Pulse show.

ANDY HAU PRESENTS:

Inspired by storytelling, Andy’s designs capture a sense of aching nostalgia that is counterpointed by a feeling of joy and wonderment. From the euphoric rush of being in the city to windswept holidays by the seaside, his designs are abstracted assemblages of personal experiences, designed to invoke an emotional response. Andy’s most recent range is a collection of cushions featuring a fox called Quinn. Entitled “Tales From The War & Other Short Stories”, each cushion invites the viewer to join Quinn on one of his whimsical adventures. Visit A.H.A Design at Pulse 2015: Stand Number A18
