Trends Trends with Unique Style Platform You might have already encountered a trend report or two that our partners at Unique Style Platform have produced for us. If not, it’s time to catch up!

19 — At the centre of it all is Founder and Creative Director, Jane Kellock. Former Head of Design at Topshop and having upheld many posts at both WGSN and Stylus, we caught up with Jane to have a chat about looking ahead and the importance of trends. So tell us, why USP? Well we’re made up of a range of experts with broad industry experience, so it really allows our trends to be formed from a wide range of perspectives. We’re always monitoring new developments across lifestyle, culture, technology, retail, fashion and social media, so we can really bring together the most innovative information to form our seasonal insights. But why are trends important? Trend forecasting isn’t about encouraging copying - we need to inspire creativity and originality, offering inspiration backed up by bigger picture thinking. We curate

trend information and make it relevant to the brands we are working with. Trends are about pulling strands of information together to add context to big picture ideas and tell stories. That’s really vital in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing retail environment. Do you have any tips for applying trends? It’s important to think carefully about how new trends will fit into your brand identity and consumer profiles. Selecting trends that are relevant to you and curating the information in a way that suits your customer is vital in order to retain your individuality and point of view. Remember, not every trend suits every brand! In the next few pages, discover six trend reports USP have put together using incredible products you will find from exhibitors at Pulse!

Good curation is key

“Storytelling is vital in a retail environment because it can help your products stand out in a crowded market. Just remember to stay true to yourself and your story, as this is vital for clear understanding and communication of the concept.”

3

Use your time well “Get very used to multi-tasking. We use quiet days productively and never sit and wait for the next customer – so focus on display, photography, social media, researching new product, reviewing delivery costs, and so on.” Andrea Bates, Future and Found ShopTalk on Monday 15 May at 12:00

“We live in a time with so much choice… perhaps too much choice. Good curation does the work for the consumer. It should remove endless options and offer a considered, fresh selection. Customers should be able to rely on the shop to offer the perfect ‘edit’, saving precious time for the consumer.” Helen Osgerby, Simple Shape ShopTalk on Monday 15 May at 12:00

4

Pay attention to the boring details “The chance to often be creative is one of the best things about being an entrepreneur but it’s equally important to focus on the less exciting details. Maintaining accurate records, book-keeping, managing stock and logistics, and generally being well organised is crucial.” Tom Cridland, Tom Cridland ShopTalk on Tuesday 16 May at 14:00

Meet the — Maker — Nothing sells a product like the inspiring story of the person who made it. And with our Meet the Maker series, we aim to give you more context and understanding of the products you buy, by uncovering the how and the why. Make sure you also go to the Pulse Blog to find many more incredible stories!

Lucy Batura

Polymorphics, A19

I’m an Edinburgh-based designer. I make simple geometric wooden objects for people to use and enjoy. Every single object is unique in shape and colour. My project is called Polymorphics, POLY from Greek means many, MORPH means form.

“Every object is unique in shape and colour.”

34 —

I find lots of inspiration in my surroundings and by using a natural material like wood, I’m trying to capture the pure beauty of it and transform it into a contemporary object.

Laura Clery

Zeal Illustration, F23

I’m the designer at Zeal Illustration. All of our designs are first illustrated by hand (by me!) and then transferred onto silk screens and printed in our UK studio. This is how I got started…

“I decided to only make things that I want in my own house.” So… I lost my job. This made me re-think what I really wanted to be doing with my time. When we first started, I designed products that I

thought people would want to buy. One day, I thought “screw this for a box of frogs” and I decided to only make things that I want in my own house. So that’s what I now do and I am so free! Our current collection is made up of beautiful tropical birds, banana leaves and the amazing palm leaf. My favourite product however, is the flamingo print. He is gold, opulent and proud; he proves that it is possible to be both ugly and beautiful at the same time.

My favourite piece is a candleholder made of beautiful ash olive wood. The wood is very special and comes from the ‘After the Storm’ project. On January 3rd 2012, Cyclone Andrea swept across Scotland leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. At the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, winds of over 100 mph uprooted and injured over 30 trees. The project has been created to explore the theme of regeneration, and celebrate recovery and resilience following a storm.

Every brand has that pivotal moment where you go from a startup to a big, well-established business. This new editorial feature pinpoints that exact moment. The founders of Men’s Society and Katie Leamon share their stories and tips for other start-ups hoping for their big break…

My top tips for someone starting out: 1. Don’t overthink it. 2. Mistakes are inevitable. 3. The internet exists – use it for everything. 4. Delegate. 5. Find out if you’re eligible for small business funding. 6. Just go for it! Bella Middleton is the co-founder of Men’s Society (G30) along with her husband Hugo.

Bella Middleton Like many other people, Hugo and I were bored of the rat race and wanted to do our own thing. It was only when I was trying to choose him a cool birthday present that we hit on an idea that would change our lives forever. And so, Men’s Society was born.

“We hit on an idea that would change our lives forever.” We started exhibiting at trade shows four years ago. Back then our first stand at Pulse was about two metres wide; this year it will be over forty-five. The past few years have taken us on an extraordinary journey from London to Lincolnshire; from two staff in a small flat to twenty two, 15K Instagram followers, four Men’s Society concessions, several hundred awesome retailers all over the world – oh and two little children! In short it has been very busy…

Editorial

My Big — Break —

Katie Leamon I attended the Liberty Open Call day in April 2011 and after queuing from 5am to see the buyers, I managed to get my first ever faceto-face sales meeting and secured them as my first stockist. It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever done in my career but also the one I am proudest of. A month after this I decided to exhibit at Pulse as it had been recommended to me by another brand. I was lucky enough to have the help and support of my family and friends, so when I was either too busy or too exhausted, they helped me recognise my successes and work out the next step. We now have a small, family-led team and do everything in house so we can maintain the tangible, personal, hands-on approach across every department. My top tips for someone starting out: 1. Make sure you identify early on what message you want your product to portray. 2. When you feel like giving up, keep moving forward. 3. Bounce ideas off friends and family. 4. Establish a strong brand identity and stick to it. 5. Research, research, research! 6. Be original. Katie Leamon (L33) is founder of her eponymous brand and creates luxury cards and stationery.
