FORAGE

FORAGE
The herb garden at Fox Haven contains nearly 200 varieties of herbs. And most of them can be used for more than one purpose. So, the potential cures, relief and natural wellness possibilities within that one stretch of grassy land on a soft hill just outside Jefferson could not possibly be fully covered in a single article. Then again, neither could Fox Haven itself. Its mission, and the activities and programs it offers pursuant to same, are as allencompassing and sprawling as the secluded Frederick County farmland on which it sits. Does your group require a peaceful setting for an overnight retreat? Interested in a cooking class? Or perhaps you prefer to learn about foraging for your own food in the wilderness. Yoga may be calling to you, or you might have recently decided to reduce your personal carbon imprint by working with, as opposed to against, the land. You might even be curious about a little dairy science. Or tea brewing. In one form or another, programs built around these activities are available at Fox Haven. And those represent a mere percentage of what is on offer yearround at this local nonprofit. So yes, myriad options. However, just as all those herbs in the garden share certain components in common such as sunshine, rain and nutrient-rich soil, the activities and mission of the entire Fox Haven community also have their universals — namely, a connectivity, or perhaps even a communion with the natural world. My guide during a recent visit, Alecks Ferguson, put it far better than I could when she told me: “Fox Haven has a lot to offer ... connecting people to nature and experiencing it for themselves in real time.”

FORAGE
It requires little effort to feel at one with nature on the Fox Haven campus. Not even the slightest trace of the increasing Jefferson housing development and constant roadwork can be detected here, despite being a mere five minutes away. The winding, still-dirt Poffenberger Road provides the only access to the facility. Driving on it (go slowly!) I felt as though I’d left Southern Frederick County entirely. Signs indicating that Fox Haven owns the land can be found at regular intervals before one even reaches the entrance. This land, and miles around it, are kept in trust and are hence, for the foreseeable future, immunized from development. Founded more than 40 years ago by environmentally conscious Harriet Crosby, who purchased the land for that very reason, the farm now consists of 750 acres of protected land. This protection, Alecks told me, is what she considers the most important service provided by Fox Haven overall. The farm owns and operates several facilities available for retreats, reunions and other overnight group endeavors. Though some of these were occupied during my visit, I was given a tour of Chestnut House,

arguably the centerpiece of the hosting aspects of Fox Haven. The oldest parts of the house date back to the 1700s, with additions taking place in both the 1800s and early 1900s. It can sleep about a dozen people comfortably, with its many rooms and crannies. A cozy meeting room, complete with fireplace offers excellent views of the grounds.

Education is the backbone of Fox Haven. (I learned, while there, that a teaspoon of locally grown honey is believed to lessen the impact of one’s allergies for an entire season.) To that end, interns play a large part in the daily operations. During my visit I met up with three of them as they were climbing the hill from the nearby orchard after a session of picking and gathering flowers. One, named Reese, explained to me how much she got out of just arriving at Fox Haven any given day: “Sometimes you kind of forget to stop, so twice I week I have to stop and be part of earth… Even when we're doing something too arduous, and I'm feeling, ‘I'm too tired for this,’ I just look around. And then it goes away.” “Joy is about connection,” is how Carly, another intern described it. “Fox Haven is just all about connection …through our connection to the natural world. What it means to be stewards.” It would be dishonest of me to claim that I, during my brief visit, felt the full scope of the natural connection and oneness with the earth that Fox Haven seeks to nurture in every visitor. I was there to accomplish a specific job-oriented task after all. Yet the sincerity of those I met, was palpable. (If something can be described as “palpable” in such a peaceful setting.) Anyone contemplating a visit should rest assured that the Fox Haven commitment to the cause of presence and unity with Mother Earth. But I’ll let the words of its own website serve as an invitation: “Come visit Fox Haven, slow down, come back to your senses, feel the healing power of nature, learn something new, become part of something

inding the perfect holiday gifts for the special people in your life doesn’t have to be a painful experience filled with big box stores and global internet sites. Frederick County offers countless places where folks can support locally owned and operated small businesses in picturesque settings. Brunswick, New Market, Mount Airy, Middletown and Thurmont offer visitors unique downtown stores paired with charm, history, beautiful architecture and holiday decorations. And every year, Downtown Frederick looks like a holiday card come to life as the tree-lined streets are adorned with lights and the 250 stores, restaurants and other businesses are decked out in festive decor. Kara Norman, Downtown Frederick Partnership’s executive director, notes that 99 percent of the city’s retail stores are independently owned. “When you enter that business ...what you are experiencing and getting the chance to look at or to eat or the service you get to experience, is personally crafted by an independent owner. It is their vision of what their business should be,” she says.
Norman says she has benefited from local owners’ expertise many times when shopping locally. “They give me options and help me find things I might not have found on own and that level of service, I think, makes shopping more fun,” she says. “[It] also increases your likelihood of finding the gift you really want to give to whoever is special on your list.”

OLIVE & BASKET 5231 Buckeystown Pike, Frederick oliveandbasket.com Many unique gift ideas come courtesy of Olive & Basket, in Frederick. The purveyor of imported foods and elegant snacking options can help you create tasty gifts for the ones you love. Opened seven years ago, the Frederick-based speciality grocery and gift store features a number of items that would bring a smile to a loved one’s face, says owner Sharon Streb. Some fan favorites include a variety of extra virgin olive oils flavored with rosemary, meyer lemon or garlic. Hand-blended freshly made herb mixes, used as bread dipping seasoning, are also quickly snatched up by patrons, Streb says. Gift boxes are usually best sellers around the holidays. Customers may create their own or pick from pre-made selections. The “bread dipper” box features Tuscan dipper herb mix, Koroneiko extra virgin olive oil and a handmade olive wood bowl. Another gift box favorite is “spaghetti dinner night,” showcasing Stella handmade pasta, pesto extra virgin olive oil, Tuscan dipper seasoning, marinara pasta sauce and traditional balsamic reduction vinegar. Nearly all the products sold at Olive & Basket are made by small businesses. “I always tell people by supporting us, you support all those small vendors behind us because you help keep them in business, too,” Streb says.

Aside from soap, customers can also find a number of other self-care products to help them indulge their senses, such as body scrubs, bath bombs, lotion, body butter, shower gels, lip balms and body spray. OVER THE EDGE
Shed any pre-conceived thoughts you may have about Richmond and plan a weekend getaway to this nearby city to the south. (Actually, you’ll probably want to plan for more time than just one weekend. There is so much to experience.) For starters, Richmond is home to one of the best botanical gardens in the United States. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (lewisginter.org) boasts 50 acres, with more than a dozen themed spaces, including a Rose Garden, Cherry Tree Walk and Asian Valley. For kids, a fantastic children’s garden provides some fun, interactive, educational opportunities. The classical domed Conservatory is also a beautiful architectural structure where you can check out a number of tropical plants. For those who like to commune with nature and art, public art pieces are scattered throughout the property with poems placed throughout as well. And don’t forget to get your photo taken with one of Virginia’s famous “Love” sculptures there. The garden is open year-round. In addition to the botanical garden, Richmond has a number of places for art lovers to visit, none better than the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (vmfa.museum), consistently ranked as a Top 10 art museum in the country. Open every day of the year, the museum also allows free admission (though some special exhibitions may have a nominal charge). Think of an iconic artist, and you are sure to find some of their work at the VMFA. The museum has an amazing collection of antiquities as well as furnishings such as Tiffany lamps and furniture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Make sure to build some time into your schedule to walk the grounds and check out the Chihuly glass installation and other public art sculptures. And if you’re hungry during your visit, Amuse Restaurant, an on-site fine dining establishment, offers Sunday brunch, lunch, happy hour and dinner. 63

For a fun evening activity, take a Sunset Bike Tour with Basket and Bike (basketandbike.com). This two-and-a-half-hour bike tour is a great way to get to the know city (if you don’t want to pedal that much they also offer an electric bike option). This tour wanders through various Richmond neighborhoods and downtown streets. You cross the James River and take in stunning views of the city’s skyline and head up to one of the highest points in the city with picturesque views of the river and surrounding area. Your tour guide will highlight interesting and unique facts about the city’s history, art and scenery along the way. They provide the bikes, helmets, water and even a complimentary beverage at the nearby Urban Farmhouse and Café afterward. Richmond has some distinctly unique neighborhoods and several of them are worth checking out. One such neighborhood is Jackson Ward, nicknamed the “Harlem of the South” because of its vibrant Black heritage and culture. Visit the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site (nps.gov/mawa), the former home of the bank president, newspaper editor and entrepreneur who lived in the neighborhood for three decades. Because of her and other residents in the early 20th Century, Jackson Ward was sometimes referred to as “Black Wall Street.” Just a few blocks from this National Park Service site sits a statue of Walker that was created by Maryland artist Toby Mendez. You can take a self-guided tour of the murals in Jackson Ward as well. If you have time, another amazing neighborhood to visit is Carytown, situated in the heart of Richmond and contains several locally owned boutique shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

OVER THE EDGE
Your weekend isn’t complete unless you have brunch at Lemaire (lemairerestaurant.com), a Virginia Green certified restaurant located within the historic Jefferson Hotel (jeffersonhotel. com). Start off with a bowl of Virginia Peanut Soup featuring a sliver of Kite’s country ham and spiced grapes. Two other great options are the three-egg omelet with chevre and chives and the hot honey BLT with glazed Edwards bacon, lettuce, tomato and brie on multi-grain bread. A fabulous place to stay during your visit to Richmond is the Linden Row Inn (lindenrowinn. com), located in the heart of downtown. This boutique inn is nice for those who aren’t B&B fans but don’t care for cookie-cutter hotels either. It is a historic property, but with all the modern amenities you would expect from a luxury hotel. Its original Greek revival architecture has put it on the National Register of Historic Places. Each room is unique and furnished with authentic antique pieces from the mid- to late-19th Century. The ambiance is fantastic and it is like staying in a historic row home filled with books and amenities to enjoy. The staff are friendly and the restaurant on premise, Parterre Restaurant and Bar (parterrerva.com), serves traditional Southern fare and has a beautiful courtyard for outdoor dining. And just for a little bit more history, Edgar Allan Poe is said to have played in the garden as a young child and the site reportedly served as inspiration for at least one of his poems. This is just a sampling of the options that exist in the capital of the South, which is redefining what a Southern city has to offer in terms of arts, culture and history for interested travelers.
