Bhangra dancing improves heart health of South Asian children

South Asian children are at a higher risk of heart disease compared to children of other ethnic groups. A seven-month Bhangra dance program trialled at four elementary schools in B.C. showed improved heart health for this population.

In Canada, South Asians are the largest and most rapidly growing visible minority group. They also bear a greater risk of heart disease as early

ect Bhangra, for South Asian children. This is the first time in B.C. that a culturally appropriate exercise targeted at South Asian children in the school setting has been researched as a way to improve cardiorespiratory fitness for this population.

The team recruited 172 children in grades three to six from four elementary schools in the greater Surrey area, home to the largest Punjabi Sikh

as childhood. Studies have found that South Asian children have been shown to have higher blood sugar levels, waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) when compared to children of other ethnic groups. BMI is a variable that indicates if an individual’s weight is healthy for their height, age and gender.

Early lifestyle intervention to improve cardiorespiratory health can help lower the risk of heart disease in adulthood. Bhangra is a form of dance that is deeply rooted in the Punjabi community, originally performed by boys and men to celebrate the harvest and reflect the strength and endurance needed for farming activities. This traditional folk dance is a great cardio workout to get the heart pumping and oxygen flowing through the lungs as it can burn up to 500 calories in a single session.

A team of researchers, led by BC Children’s Hospital investigator Dr. Tricia Tang, trialled a seven-month Bhangra dance program, called Proj-

settlement outside of India. Eligible participants had at least one South Asian parent who they communicated with in English, Urdu, Hindi or Punjabi.

For seven months, the children had after-school Bhangra dance sessions twice a week. The 45-to-60-minute sessions were led by instructors who were trained to teach elementary school children by the Royal Academy of Bhangra. At the beginning, participants were introduced to simple dance routines that gradually increased in complexity and pace, while accommodating each individual’s learning ability.

The program maintained excellent participation across the four schools. Usually during the late fall and early spring, which is when the study was conducted, many South Asian families in B.C. will travel to India for up to eight weeks at a time. Despite this, the program maintained an attendance rate of 74 per cent and retention rate of 87 per cent.

For the 148 participants who remained, fitness levels improved significantly. In the 20-metre shuttle run test, average laps increased from about 20 to 28, an indication of much better aerobic capacity. The children were also able to vertically jump higher as a result of increased muscle strength and power. As well, waist circumference decreased by an average of 1.49 cm.

The program also reduced barriers for this community. In Surrey, cost and safety are among South Asian parents’ greatest concerns for their children. Bhangra classes, offered at no cost in a safe, familiar school setting, provided parents an attractive option for their children.

“Research has often focused on mainstream interventions that are not

culturally specific. Different communities have unique needs, and we must start tailoring our research to meet these needs,” says Dr. Shazhan Amed, a BC Children’s Hospital investigator on the research team.

“This study shows that culturally based dances, such as Bhangra, can promote fitness in children and should be explored in public health interventions.”

Project Bhangra was made possible with funding from Lawson Foundation and a generous donation from the Azad and Yasmin Shamji family. Visit the Project Bhangra website to learn more.

Are Slip and Fall Settlements Taxable?

It is that time of year when many of you may be thinking about filing your 2022 taxes. If you had a payout in 2022 for a slip and fall settlement you may wonder is the settlement taxable? The general rule is that slip and fall compensation is not taxable. Damages for personal injury claims are not considered income by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA); therefore, they are exempt from income tax. This tax exemption applies to compensation for physical and/or mental personal injuries and includes:

• “Special damages;” including out-of-pocket expenses such as medical and hospital expenses, future loss of earnings; and

• “General damages;” for pain and suffering, loss of amenities of life, loss of earning capacity, shortened expectation of life, and the loss of financial support caused by the death of a supporting individual. The tax exemption for personal injury damages applies regardless of whether the amount you receive is paid

when received, even if the damages were calculated with reference to your loss of earnings.

Be warned, however, if you are considering investing your personal injury compensation. A slip and fall settlement is not taxable when you initially receive it, but income earned on an investment is taxable income (for example, interest, dividends, or capital gains earned if you invest the money you received as compensation for your injuries). Professional tax advice tailored to your circumstances is always recommended, particularly if you have received a large personal injury award.

Get Legal Advice from STA’s Experienced Lawyers

pursuant to an out-of-court settlement or in accordance with a court order made by a judge or jury after trial. It also doesn’t matter if the compensation is paid as a one-time lump sum or over time in periodic payments through a structured settlement. As long as the amount paid arose from a claim for damages for personal injury or death, it is not taxable as income

Slip and fall accidents can be complex and cause severe, life-changing injuries. If you have been hurt in a slip and fall, the best course of action is to get legal advice from an experienced personal injury lawyer. Call us today at (604) 229 9551 or fill out our online form on www.simpsonthomas. com to request a free consultation.

The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Premier: Compact EV is an Excellent Buy!

The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is an updated version of General Motors' compact five-door electric hatchback. It has a new CUV-style design, which is well-considered and attractive. The vehicle comes in two trims, starting at $39,998 plus $1,800 destination and freight for the entry-level LT trim, while the Premier version costs $45,498 plus options. The Bolt EUV is powered by an electric motor producing 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 65-kWh battery driving the front wheels. It has a range of 397 km on a full charge and energy consumption estimates of 16.8 kWh/100 km in city driving, 20.1 on the highway, and 18.3 in combined driving. Safety features include auto high beams, cruise control, forwardcollision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.

The Bolt EUV's interior features include a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, automatic climate control, keyless entry and ignition, power windows and door locks, and a tilting and telescoping steering column. Both trims come with a power-adjustable driver’s seat, 10.2-inch infotainment screen, eightinch configurable gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charger, cargo privacy cover, heated front seats, and steering wheel. The Premier version adds niceties such as rain-sensing wipers, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and ambient lighting.

The Bolt EUV's all-electric powertrain provides instantaneous acceleration and a low center of gravity, making it fun to drive. The steering is light but responsive, and it is very pleasant to drive. The EV drivetrain supports decent enough acceleration for quick acceleration or highway passing. Using the Sport mode adds an extra fizz to the Bolt's throttle response and ups steering feel, although it will reduce the battery range.

Inside, the Bolt EUV is well-appointed and tech-forward. The 10.2-inch in-

fotainment touchscreen is easy to use and provides access to a wide range of features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. There's also a wireless charging pad

for your smartphone, so you can keep your device charged up without any cords getting in the way. The available Bose premium audio system provides excellent sound quality, and there's plenty of connectivity options for all your devices.

The Bolt EUV interior is roomy and comfortable. The seats are supportive, ergonomics good and is very passenger-friendly. With its rear seat up – There is 462 L of cargo space in the EUV compared to 470 L in the previous Bolt. The car has a hidden underfloor storage compartment. Fit finish and interior material quality is particularly good with a neat, uncluttered design. Downsides include a suspension that can be a bit jiggly on rough surfaces, no All Wheel Drive version, and the Bolt is not particularly sporty to drive.

In addition to its impressive range and driving performance, the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV also boasts a range of advanced technology features. One standout feature is the available Super Cruise system, which allows for handsfree driving on compatible highways. This system uses a network of cameras, radar sensors, and GPS mapping to ensure that the vehicle stays in its lane and maintains a safe following distance from other vehicles. The driver must remain alert and ready to take control of the vehicle if necessary, but Super Cruise takes a lot of the stress out of highway driving.

2023 Chevrolet Bolt Premier. Priced from $39,998 plus $1,800 destination and freight. Premier at $45,498, plus options.

Giving the gift of life

(NC) It was during a phone call that Tom Weinstein learned that Bryan, the son of a long-time friend, had lost the function of his kidneys and was on kidney dialysis. This friend moved out of province shortly after he and Tom graduated from university but the two remain friends and have stayed connected for decades.

Through many conversations, Tom learned about the physical and emotional challenges presented by kidney function loss, which involved many hours of dialysis, over many days each week at a hospital, and a generally poor quality of life. Tom also learned that a kidney transplant was the only treatment to eliminate the need for dialysis and to allow a person to live a normal life again.

After meeting Bryan in person on a visit in 2011, as an adult, and learning more about the impact of kidney function on his life, Tom began to consider the idea of becoming a living donor.

Initially, he thought that at age 64 he would be too old, but with solid medical advice and strong support from his wife, he decided to begin the extensive testing process to be a donor – as did Bryan’s testing to be a recipient. After multiple tests over many months, Tom’s health was de-

clared excellent, and he qualified to be a kidney donor.

However, Tom and Bryan were not a “match” for kidney transplant. Undeterred, Tom and Bryan entered the Kidney Paired Donation Exchange operated by Canadian Blood Services, a unique inter-provincial program where living donors provide recipients with a compatible kidney. Tom was matched with a kidney patient and donated his kidney anonymously. There were five pairs (donors and recipients) in Tom and Bryan’s chain at transplant hospitals across Canada. There were five surgeries in the morning to remove a kidney and five surgeries in the afternoon to implant a kidney.

Today, Bryan is well and thriving in his computer career. Tom has joined the Transplant Ambassador Program, a peer support program under the umbrella of the Kidney Patient and Donor Alliance.

Tom shares his story in the hope that it may help others to begin to think about living donation. In Tom’s case, it all started with a thought and evolved from there. As Tom says, “The decision was simple…a fellow human being needed help and I was in a position to offer that help.”

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas is looking for your support!

We are over the rainbow with excitement to announce our annual St. Patrick’s Day Party & Silent Auction at on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Bradner Hall! In the past this has been a sold-out event with over 200 in attendance and a great time was had by all.

To help make this fundraising event a success we are asking for your assistance to become a sponsor. We have two opportunities available for you: Platinum Sponsor Limited to Three: $1000 entitles this sponsor to speak during the event, have high profile media, can allocate $500 of this sponsorship to charity of choice (see list below).

Table Sponsor: $300 entitles sponsor to have tabletop sign (one sponsor per table, 20 tables), media exposure, acknowledgement at the registration desk the night of March 18. Additionally, if a table of 8 or 10 is purchased, there is a discount of $100 for both combined.

The Abbotsford-Sumas Rotary Club has been very active in your community for over twenty-six years. Locally we provide ongoing support for programs such as the Abbotsford Food Bank, Abbotsford Women’s Transition House, Abbotsford Hospice, Cyrus Centre, the Foundry Youth Health Centre, Literacy Matters and many others. Over the years we have built 16 playgrounds in local parks and we continue to support youth initiatives and programs that meet the growing and ever changing needs of our community. Among these are the installation of 13 Little Free Libraries in local parks, Community Centres and Social Services Offices which have supplied over 28,000 books free in the first year of operation.

On an international level, in Guatemala we support providing wheelchairs/prosthetics to the disabled and a mobile literacy bus initiative. We have funded water projects in Turkey, Ethiopia and other countries and we

participate in a program to provide agricultural micro-loans in developing countries focussing on single women with families to support.

We hope we can count on your support in our fundraising efforts in order that we can continue to meet our mandate of “Service above Self” and improve people’s quality of life in our community and the world.

Anything you have either over committed yourself to or made too big to handle could become a bit of a problem. The main purpose of this is to get you to look at things in a realistic manner when it comes to what is possible. Finding some quiet time to yourself so that you can think things over in peace will be a big help.

You might have to come up with solutions you didn’t expect to deal with because of something coming up either within the family or connected to the home. There will be no need to abandon important priorities to accommodate this. It is likely that a situation that was expected to be developing in the future will need to be dropped.

Demanding expectations of somebody else can be highly frustrating to you, mainly because they are unprepared to listen. The main thing is not to succumb to their demands, especially if you are expected to take on obligations. Some sort of escape from this situation can take place late in the week. Just be patient and wait.

A decision somebody else makes to bring something to an end could generate some unexpected difficulty or frustration for you. Don’t be tempted to take on increased obligations. There can be a degree of secretiveness, which means you cannot see the whole picture. Stick to the pleasant things you have been planning for the future.

The Full Moon this week occurs in your own sign. It could bring some unexpected obligations your way. It might also incline you to make a commitment to a situation that you have been avoiding. You could feel as though you have a clearer picture and other people involved could be more willing to make compromises that suit you

Other people can be helpful when it comes to something out of the ordinary you have considered pursuing in the future. You might need to decide whether their view or the risks they might be willing to take suit you. You might also begin to realise that there is a lot more to this than you had originally imagined.

Make a final decision anything that you might have felt uncertain about when it comes to either the amount of work involved or the detail. It may have been an ambitious plan for the future. There could be support from an unexpected source that will enable you to fulfil something that you feel needs to be a priority in life.

Dropping an idea or backing away from an agreement that wasn’t quite clear could be a good thing. This will enable you to move into something that will give you greater pleasure and enjoyment as well as perhaps bring you into contact with some interesting people. Don’t be too generous though in taking on obligations.

Bringing an end to some sort of spending is probably the only way to be able to establish a more balanced foundation with everything you need to deal with. This could be especially home and family needs. Getting equipment you can use at home might be a way of working around what you normally spend money on.

You can finally move on and leave behind all the interferences that either held up what you would normally get done on a regular basis or just put them into chaos from early December. Take the opportunity to find a little time for some pleasure or relaxation this week. It may not be what you normally do, but make an exception.

Something can become very obvious with somebody else which could either be stimulated by you being most determined about the type of foundation you want to develop in your life or because you have already made moves in this direction. Your mind will be made up and you will definitely feel it is time to move on, whatever.

Many things can begin to fall into place that will result in a greater sense of peace and balance on a personal level. Some of this could be due to you having developed your own ideas that may not follow conventional lines. It might result in a greater amount of work or more details to deal with than you thought but as long as you are happy.

B.C. launches action plan to better detect, treat, prevent cancers

Cancer patients and their loved ones will benefit from expanded access to care as B.C. launches a new action plan with immediate steps to better prevent, detect and treat cancers, delivering improved care for people now while preparing for the growing needs of the future.

“Nearly every British Columbian has been affected by cancer in some way, through their own diagnosis or that of a family member or friend,” said Premier David Eby. “With this significant investment in cancer care, we can prevent and detect cancer earlier and improve access to treatment. This will help save lives and improve the quality of life of British Columbians, now and into the future.”

An initial $440-million investment will expand cancer-care teams and service hours, introduce revised pay structures to ensure B.C. is attractive and competitive for oncologists and cancer-care professionals, improve cancer screening programs, support cancer research, increase Indigenous patient support positions, and support patients who must travel for care from rural communities.

“We’re investing in research, technology and innovation to strengthen cancer care in B.C. and deliver more innovative, evidence-based care for people when and where they need it,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “This action plan will help achieve a cancer-free future for more people, accelerate treatment for patients diagnosed with cancer and help thousands more survive their cancer diagnosis.”

To make access to cancer care more equitable for people living in rural and remote communities, this plan will include increased funding to support expenses related to travelling for cancer care. Also, more cancer centres will be added throughout the province to bring treatment closer to home for people.

“As a cancer survivor and a patient partner, I’ve seen first-hand the kind-

ness, compassion and commitment to putting patients first that’s shared by all of BC Cancer’s dedicated health professionals,” said Penelope Hedges. “With these new investments and BC Cancer’s commitment to keeping patient voices at the forefront, there’s no limit to what we can do to change the lives of people with cancer in our province.”

Undertaking research and integrating findings is also critical for providing the best cancer care in B.C. The Province is providing a grant to the BC Cancer Foundation to support cancer research and attract highly skilled cancer-care providers.

The Ministry of Health has worked closely with BC Cancer to develop the plan. The commitment and expertise of BC Cancer, health authorities, physicians, nursing and allied health, public health and others who contribute to the cancer-care system are the cornerstones on which this plan is built.

The plan aligns with recommendations made in the In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous-specific Racism and Discrimination in B.C. Health Care report, and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. The 10-year cancer-care action plan is supported by B.C.’s Health Human Resources Strategy, which supports patients by ensuring they get the health services they need and are cared for by a healthy workforce. This strategy focuses on 70 key actions to recruit, train and retain health-care workers in B.C. while redesigning the health-care system to foster workplace satisfaction and innovation.

Be Holi-ready with OxiClean

It’s Holi season! Time to load up the pichkaris, stock up on gulaal, make tons of water balloons, and shout from the top of our lungs: Holi hai!

As snow-white winters give way to the colours of spring, we look forward to the festival that heralds all the fun and festivities that come with it.

What better way to invite every colour in the universe our way than by wearing crisp white clothing? And it goes without saying that the clothes look like a missing piece of the rainbow by the end of the evening!

Being Holi-ready also comes with the dread of cleaning up the day after—because nobody looks forward to getting the colour off their clothes after the celebrations subside. In fact, statistics show that people would rather discard their Holi clothes than take the trouble of washing them and bringing them back to life. After a long day of festivities, getting gulaal off your clothes is the last thing on your mind. If only there was a stressfree way to get through the post-Holi chaos.

The answer is to simply add OxiClean™ MaxForce Laundry Stain Remover Spray, and OxiClean™

Versatile Stain Remover to your laundry routine. They are the most powerful stain-fighters to remove all Holi-related stains.

The OxiClean™ MaxForce Laundry Stain Remover Spray has the power of 5 stain removers in 1. It easily removes tough stains like grease, oil, grass, blood, soil, clay, tea, and

gravy. And yes, gulaal, too. Once the festivities are over, pre-treat your clothes with the OxiClean™ MaxForce and let them soak till the laundry day arrives. When it does, let the OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover work its magic along with your preferred detergent. This incredible oxygen-based stain fighter is chlorine-free and colour-safe. OxiClean™ uses the power of oxygen to get tough stains out of your laundry using a unique formula. This formula is activated by water,

When is the best time to file your taxes?

(NC) When the tax deadline approaches every spring, some of us choose to file as soon as we can, and some might submit closer to the deadline. But does the date you file really make a difference, as long as it’s before the due date? In some ways the answer is no.

However, your timing can impact when you receive your benefit and credit payments - including the

Climate action incentive payment, known as the CAIP.

Eligible residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario receive this payment to offset what they pay day-to-day for the federal price on pollution.

Although it’s now paid in four installments, you still have to file a tax return to receive the CAIP. And whether or not you receive the next

payment on April 14th is affected by how soon you file.

To receive the April 14 payment, the Canada Revenue Agency recommends filing your taxes electronically by March 10. Doing so provides the best chance to have your eligibility assessed and your payment processed ahead of the April 14 payment date.

If you don’t file in time to get the April payment, that’s okay. It will be included with the payment that next

occurs after your tax return is filed and assessed.

If you’re a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island, you may be eligible for the CAIP later this year. But since the federal fuel charge will only begin in those provinces on July 1, 2023, the April 2023 payment will not apply to them.

Find more information at canada.ca/ cai-payment.
