Are your sore joints trying to tell you something?

(NC) We all feel aches and pains from time to time. But if you often feel stiffness, swelling or pain in the knees, hips or other joints – don’t brush it off. Research suggests there could be as many Canadians living with undiagnosed arthritis as there are with the diagnosis.

It is important to recognize early signs of the disease because the condition can have a dramatic impact on your life, bringing pain, fatigue and restricted mobility.

“Simply put, early action can lead to early relief,” says Dr. Sian Bevan, chief science officer at Arthritis Society Canada. “Even young Canadians shouldn’t ignore persistent stiffness

and pain. This disease does not discriminate and can strike at any age.”

Maintaining a healthy weight, keeping active and eating a balanced diet can all help relieve pain and slow joint degeneration.

Check your symptoms and learn how you can manage joint pain at arthritis. ca/symptomchecker.

More veterinarians coming for B.C. pet owners, farmers

The Province is permanently doubling the number of subsidized seats for B.C. veterinary students attending the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) at the University of Saskatchewan.

This investment is part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready plan, which works to remove barriers and open more opportunities for post-secondary education and skills training, so people can get the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in high-demand, goodpaying jobs and support and grow the economy.

“Veterinarians play a critical role in supporting the agricultural sector, people, and the health and welfare of animals across B.C.,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Last year, we doubled the number of B.C. students funded to study veterinary medicine and today we are committing to continue this funding so more people receive quality training, and our pets and farm animals can get the health care they need.”

The number of provincially subsidized seats in the college’s doctor of veterinary medicine program will permanently increase from 20 to 40 with the support of an initial investment of $21.8 million over three years.

“The services and care vets provide B.C. farmers supports our province’s food security and results in British Columbians enjoying the benefits of a healthy and stable farming community,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “It’s clear we need more veterinarians in our communities, so our pets and livestock receive the attention they need, when they need it, and our government continues to take action on both recruitment and training to make that happen.”

Expanding training is one way that B.C. is working to address the need for more vets. The Province also continues to recruit more vets, including adding veterinarians and registered veterinary technologists to the list of priority occupations under the Provincial Nominee Program in 2022. This helps ensure that veterinary clinics have access to

the professionals they need to provide animal care.

“The Government of B.C.’s decision to maintain increased funding of the WCVM is a critical step toward addressing the shortage of veterinary professionals in B.C. and across Western Canada,” said Dr. Gillian Muir, dean of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. “This commitment also allows B.C. and the WCVM to work together to target priorities for British Columbians, including training more veterinarians who want to practise in rural communities and attracting more Indigenous students to the profession.”

The WCVM’s interprovincial agreement with its three provincial partners – B.C., Manitoba and Saskatchewan –helps ensure that Western Canada has a steady supply of veterinarians with in-depth knowledge of animal health and public health, as well as an awareness of the standards and issues facing livestock, fowl and fisheries producers, and pet owners.

“It has been very challenging for ranchers to access vet care in the rural and northern communities of B.C.,” said Werner Stump, vice-president, B.C. Cattlemen’s Association. “This announcement is welcomed as enhanced funding for B.C. veterinary students is a critical first step to providing animal care in these parts of the province.”

Provincial funding also supports training for veterinary technologists, key professionals in veterinary clinic teams. Diploma programs at Douglas College and Thompson Rivers University, including a distance delivery option, give opportunities for B.C. students to become registered veterinary technologists.

This investment supports the StrongerBC Future Ready plan to make post-secondary education and skills training more affordable and accessible, and to respond to the biggest challenge heard from businesses – the need for people. Budget 2023 invests $480 million over three years to support Future Ready’s plan to break down barriers to post-secondary training so more people can get the training they need for in-demand careers and employers can access the talent they need.

Get moving outside

(NC) Warmer weather is here, which means it’s time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Check out these ideas to do just that – whatever your level of fitness.

Walking is one of the best physical activities to do while enjoying the outdoors. If you’ve been sedentary in recent months, start with short distances and challenge yourself to spend a little more time walking each week. You will gradually build up your strength and stamina. Using walking poles can help with balance and make walking on uneven terrain more enjoyable.

Swimming and aquatic activities like water aerobics are a fun way to cool off on hot days, improve muscle strength and boost heart health and endurance.

For people who suffer from sore or stiff joints, choosing low- or no-impact activities is important to reduce pain and stay active longer.

“Any physical activity that you like to do and that is safe for your joints is beneficial,” says Trish Barbato, president and CEO of Arthritis Society Canada. “Try to incorporate positive movement in your daily life. Think about what type of movement brings you joy and do more of that.” Other low-impact activities that are great practiced outdoors include cycling, yoga, tai chi, Pilates, golf, trekking and gardening.

Regular physical activity can help strengthen bones and muscles, reduce stress and improve your overall health. Find more exercise tips and videos at arthritis.ca.

Province takes actions to prevent shortage of diabetes drug

The Province is taking actions to ensure that diabetes patients in B.C. do not experience a shortage of the diabetes drug semaglutide (Ozempic) in an environment where surging demand in some jurisdictions is creating shortages.

Ozempic is an injectable prescription drug designed to treat Type 2 diabetes mellitus and contains the active ingredient semaglutide. To date, British Columbia has not experienced any shortages of the drug.

B.C.’s PharmaNet data indicates that an unusually high percentage of the dispenses of Ozempic are being purchased by U.S. patients from pharmacies located in British Columbia. In January and February 2023, 15% or 15,798 of Ozempic dispenses in B.C. were sold to U.S. residents. U.S. residents made up 19% or 12,816 of all patients who were dispensed the drug by a pharmacy in the province. The average of other drugs sold to Americans is 0.4%.

“The purpose of procuring the drug Ozempic for British Columbia is not to turn around and export it to Americans. It is to make sure patients in British Columbia and Canada requiring the drug to treat their Type 2 diabetes can continue to access it,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health.

“For this reason, we are taking action to ensure Type 2 diabetes patients maintain access to Ozempic.”

To protect the supply of this drug for residents of B.C. and Canada who need it, the Province intends to amend regulations to limit the sale or dispensing of Ozempic to non-Canadian residents in situations where there are potential supply issues.

BC PharmaCare provides limited coverage for Ozempic as a second

line therapy for Type 2 diabetes to help patients manage blood sugar levels when metformin, another diabetes drug, is not effective. Ozempic is not approved for weight loss. Given the significant dispensing volumes, the Ministry of Health is asking the respective colleges to ensure that physicians prescribing and pharmacies dispensing Ozempic are compliant with the product’s approved indication and that they are meeting the colleges’ clinical practice requirements for prescribing and dispensing medications.

Increasingly, U.S. customers are turning to Canadian online pharmacies to buy drugs at prices lower than can be obtained domestically. Currently, pharmacies in B.C. can fill prescriptions for patients written by U.S. doctors if they are co-signed by a Canadian practitioner.

The data indicates that two B.C. pharmacies were responsible for 13,197 of the 15,798 dispenses to U.S. residents, which represents 88% of all dispenses to U.S. residents in January and February 2023. Of these prescriptions, 95% were written by one or more prescribers who identified themselves as a practitioner from Nova Scotia.

“The number of prescriptions emanating from one or more practitioners in Nova Scotia is concerning. As a direct result of the review of PharmaNet data, I am writing to all provincial and territorial health ministers in Canada, as well as the Minister of Health for Canada, Jean-Yves Duclos, to review and take appropriate actions,” Dix said.

Public libraries see historic funding boost from Province

Public library users in communities throughout B.C. will benefit from modernized technology, enhanced programs and services, and better access to information through $45 million in provincial funding.

“We love our local public libraries. They are a vital part of vibrant communities, delivering services we rely on every day,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “From offering regular access to the internet, to delivering programs for families, newcomers, job seekers and seniors, this funding will go a long way to ensure libraries are helping people stay connected, access information

ing demand for our digital resources and a continuing trend towards preCOVID use of our physical branches and collections. Support from the ministry means VIRL can look at new opportunities to build literacy and learning, continue our journey toward reconciliation and build connections across our service area.”

With this additional new funding, the Province aims to enhance the provincewide library system with programs, resources and technology infrastructure that benefits people and communities throughout B.C.

“Investing in libraries is an investment in local communities, and

All 71 B.C. public libraries and organizations that help libraries deliver their services will receive one-time grants totalling $45 million in addition to their annual operating funding. This will give libraries flexibility to address local priorities, including longer hours, bigger digital collections and better access to literacy and lifelong learning opportunities. Funds will be distributed to libraries by March 31, 2023.

“Thank you for this generous contribution to the B.C. public library sector,” said Erin Hemmens, chair of the Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) board of trustees.

“This is an important time for our library system with a new strategic plan on the horizon, rapidly increas-

we’re so pleased that the Province is recognizing and supporting the important work that happens in public libraries every day throughout B.C.,” said Rina Hadziev, executive director, British Columbia Library Association. “With over 60 million visits per year, public libraries make life more affordable, foster lifelong learning and community connections, and provide vulnerable people with a welcoming space to access services. This funding will help stabilize public libraries, ensuring they are able to meet the evolving needs of their local communities over the next few years.”

There are 250 library service locations provincewide, ensuring virtually everyone in B.C. will have free access to public libraries.

In this difficult time, if you are struggling to put food on your table. Call us, we can HELP

“This is a true community partnership”, states Kim Hissink, Fundraising Coordinator for The Salvation Army. Through our Emergency Pantry we provide an average of 40 hampers per month. The hampers feed a family of 4 for 5-7 days. Currently the program costs are well over $36,000 annually and we are currently supplementing it almost fully. Their generosity will help ease the pressure.”

In 2022, 472 emergency hampers were provided through the pantry along with 300+ gift cards at Christmas to assist with Christmas meals.

“It really does take a village and as the communities of Abbotsford and Mis-

sion continue to grow and the rising costs of food, we are so grateful to have community partners like the Tejpar Family. Their support over the next 3 years combined with our Big Red Food Bin drives will allow us to continue helping those in need in the communities of Abbotsford and Mission” states Rob Studiman, Community Ministries Director for The Salvation Army.

The Tejpar family shares, “Philanthropy has always remained a longstanding commitment within our family in supporting charitable groups and organizations. Giving is so important, as we assist the most vulnerable in improving their health and a chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty.”

MP Brad Vis Seconds Conservative Bill to Fix Reckless Liberal Soft-onCrime Policies

Ottawa, ON – After eight years of Justin Trudeau, soft-on-crime Liberal policies have made our streets more dangerous and our communities less safe. Conservatives are pressing the Trudeau government to reverse its reckless legislation that is releasing dangerous, repeat offenders into local communities. Brad Vis, Member of Parliament for Mission—Matsqui— Fraser Canyon was proud to second MP Pierre PaulHus’ Bill C-325 to bring significant changes to the Criminal Code and Corrections and Conditional Release Act to restore safe streets.

“Justin Trudeau’s revolving door policies have resulted in a small number of dangerous criminals repeatedly committing violent offenses and it has led to heartbreaking consequences in communities across Canada,” said MP Vis. “Right here in British Columbia, soft-on-crime policies continue

to have tragic results, like for the man who was murdered in broad daylight just days ago in Vancouver. Conservatives will keep dangerous criminals off our streets.”

Bill C-325 would undo elements of Bill C-5, passed by the Liberals last fall, and would put a stop to the alarming number of convicted violent criminals and sex offenders who are serving their sentences in their homes. It would also create a new offense under the Criminal Code for violation of parole conditions imposed with certain serious offences and require that violations be reported to relevant authorities.

10th Annual Archway Celebration for Newcomer Women

The Community Connections program at Archway Community Services hosted its 10th annual event celebrating International Women’s Day on March 17th. Around 170 newcomer women enjoyed performances, speeches, dinner and gifts at Central Heights Church.

“It’s all about women coming together to connect with each other and take part in each other’s lives, said Archway Community Connections Supervisor Elise Marier.

“Hearing from other women through stories, song and dance allows each woman to see themselves represented in a unique way. We may not all experience the same adversity or trauma, but when we share our experiences, we acknowledge the strength and growth in others while also recognizing the same in ourselves.”

One of the speakers, Sanjota Pallan shared her six-year journey to become a permanent resident and the help she received at Archway along the way. Pallan encouraged fellow newcomers to, “believe in yourself and know that we are in a wonderful community that supports us.”

Event Coordinator Parminder Maan shared about her difficult journey since immigrating in 2013 and how she found eventually found success. Maan echoed Pallan, “I know I was there too once, but I never gave up... So always stay positive. You came this far. You can make it ahead when you believe in yourself.”

Representing other displaced Ukrainians, Lubov Plet played a Ukrainian song on her violin and Alona Korotysh performed a traditional Ukrainian song. Claudia Rivas sang a Mexican song

and a stirring rendition of Hallelujah in Spanish. A multicultural dance group from Chilliwack showed that language wasn’t a barrier to working together and the performances ended with a Giddha dance, a popular folk dance from the Punjab region.

Hakima Mohammadi who immigrated from Afghanistan in September 2022 shared a poem in Dari and recounted how she was scared at first but now her fears are gone since Canadians had embraced her. She said was becoming stronger everyday. In her home country she said all women were in virtual prison and girls were deprived from school. She is so thankful that she and her daughter can study and work in Canada.

The Community Connections Volun-

teer Coordinator, Lata Aggarwal said the speakers, “give us hope. Women are made of steel.”

Following the performances, participants enjoyed dinner and dessert, accompanied by a violinist, and ended the night with a multicultural dance party.

“There are numerous upheavals and atrocities occurring globally and women and children are often disproportionally affected in times of war, oppression, and disaster. For this year’s International Women’s Day our theme was growth which acknowledges the hardships that women endure, while focusing on the resilience and strength that each woman holds,” said Marier.

The event’s growth theme was further symbolized by the plants donated by Van Belle Nursery for participants.

“I want to say a huge thank you to Central Heights Church for allowing us to use their space and supporting the preparation of the event, Van Belle Nursery and the Archway Food Bank,” said Marier. “This event can only happen because of them and all of the 45 staff and volunteers who mobilize to pull this event off.”

The Archway Community Connections program offers many opportunities for volunteers and newcomers at various stages of settlement in Canada to connect. If you would like more information, please visit Archway.ca/ Connections.

The Patrika

The Patrika Auto Review:

The sporty all-new 2023 Honda HR-V is a five-door compact CUV designed for drivers with active lifestyles or young families. The latest secondgeneration HR-V is now based on the Honda Civic platform rather than the previous smaller Fit model, so is now longer and wider, Major changes include more cabin space, more rear seat legroom and one of the largest cargo areas in its class. There is an all-new hightech digital instrumentation, a wider track, and a larger engine. Exterior changes add new LED Headlights and taillights and as standard matte or gloss black grille finishes.

The HR-Vs larger engine is a 2.0L four-cylinder DOHC I-VTEC unit making 158 hp at 6,500 rpm and 138 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. It’s paired with a Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control™ via continuously variable transmission (CVT) and arrives in both front wheel drive and AWD as on our EX-L trim as tested. Pricing starts at 28,370 for a front-wheel drive LX-FWD, the $31,030 LX-AWD and up to $37,130 for the EX-L Navi plus freight and taxes.

Key HR-V Features as standard include digital instrumentation, Standard 7-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™ integration. There is an available 9-inch colour touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration (EX-L Navi). The EX-L Navi adds navigation system, 9inch display touchscreen, leather trimmed seats, steering wheel, and shift knob. EX-L Exterior add a black painted grille and body color front and rear parking sensors.

The HR-V interior features a bright, roomy cabin with Hondas typical neat fastidious design. Plastics, textiles, and trim material are uniformly of good quality and the dash is neat and orderly. There are more Civic styling cues such as the honeycomb design panel across the dashboard which cleverly hides the climate vents within it. Good to see

there is some soft padded surfaces at the main touchpoints. Ergonomics are fine and the front seats are comfortable enough. The floating bridge setup between the seats provides a bit of extra storage, and overall, the cabin has plenty of cubbies, large door pockets and a convenient storage area on each side of the transmission tunnel each with its own USB port for accessories.

calibration in this Honda is much better than in the competition and can cleverly simulate actual gearshifts and is most effective when in the sport mode. However, a few extra horsepower would not be amiss I think. The HR-V accelerates well, but with a full complement of occupants and cargo it could do with tad more pep.

The rear cabin is well appointed and has more legroom thanks to the bigger Wheelbase. Downsides?- note that the HR-V offers dual zone climate control up front but has no air vents for the rear which is strange. More impressive is rear cargo volume with the 60/40 split rear seats up/down is 691L /1559L –best in class.

Safety is excellent on the Honda HR-V, with Standard Honda Sensing® system with new front wide-view camera, new Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) plus Standard knee and rear passenger side-impact airbags. The Honda Sensing which uses the wide-angle camera system to detect pedestrians, other vehicles, and even road signs and markings. Also, standard is a rear seat reminder, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and low-speed follow system.

On the road the HR-V feels confident and sure footed. There is a smoother ride thanks to the HR-V’s extended wheelbase and wider tracks that improves stability through the corners.

The steering is light and makes the CR-V engaging to drive, while the added ride height means the suspen sion makes light work of bumps and irregular road surfaces. It’s stable and planted on the highway and one of the best parts about the HR-V is its comfortable ride. The CVT setup and

Overall, the HR-V offers an enjoyable, no drama relaxed driving experience. The slightly raised suspension absorbs irregular road surfaces and there is good driver visibility all around. Its no slouch, but don’t expect rapidly fast acceleration or overly sporty antics as the quest for better fuel economy has been dialled in by Honda’s engineers it seems. Speaking of fuel economy, the HR-V is rated at 9.4 L/100 km in the city and 7.8 L/100 km on the highway and 8.7 combined.

To sum up, the HR-V is a competent, spacious, roomy, extremely safe crossover that offers more quality and value than a lot of the competition. It is a great alternative to the Honda CR-V If you are looking for something al little edgier. It excels in its active lifestyle or stylish family compact CUV role with panache. A great buy all around.

2023 Honda HR-VCUV Priced from $28,730 - $39,080.

B.C. boosts payments for children in foster, kinship, out-of-care placements

Foster parents and others who support vulnerable children and youth will soon have more assistance with monthly costs, with an increase to payments that help cover food, clothing and transportation costs for children and youth in their care.

coming,” said Julie Holmlund, president, BC Foster Parents Association.

“We are ecstatic for the caregiving community and the impact this will have for families.”

Katie Robertson, executive director, Parent Support Services Society of BC, said: “This rate lift will mean

“Boosting payments for kinship, outof-care and foster caregivers is crucial to making sure they can continue to deliver the safe and caring homes children and youth need to develop, thrive and lay the foundation for healthy adult lives,” said Mitzi Dean, Minister of Children and Family Development. “We depend on caregivers to offer the bedrock of safety and security needed for children and youth to move from vulnerability to strength. Boosting payments is part of working together toward a brighter future for these children and youth.”

B.C. is increasing monthly payments for children in foster, kinship and out-of-care placements by as much as 47% to ensure some of the province’s most vulnerable young people and those who care for them will have the support they need to build safe, stable and happy futures. The per-day rate for caregivers providing respite and relief care is also increasing by as much as 36%.

“We are overjoyed – increases for foster caregivers is the best news we could have had. It’s been a long time

so much to the extended family and community members who have brought a child into their care. These families give so much – love, stability, community and connection – to support these children and youth to succeed, and that dedication is being recognized in this increase.”

Supports for caregivers in B.C. were unchanged from 2009 to 2019. Budget 2023 provides $84.9 million to the Ministry of Children and Family Development to boost monthly caregiver rates. The increase will benefit approximately 7,800 children, youth and their caregivers.

Jen, a foster parent of 18 years, said: “I am grateful that the government has acknowledged the importance of the work we do by taking this amazing step to show that we are valued and supported. The increase will help me meet the support needs of my children, such as respite time, extra support time, specialized dental appointments, inclusive summer camps, etc. It will alleviate the financial strain that is a part of meeting all of their unique needs.”

Home ownership: What to consider when purchasing a new home

(NC) Purchasing a new home is exciting. Whether it takes a few weeks or a few months to find the perfect place, if you are in the market for a new home, you’ve likely done the math on home ownership. This includes monthly mortgage payments, utility bills and property taxes. However, it doesn’t stop there.

On top of these costs and regular maintenance, owning a home also means that you need to be prepared for repairs and unforeseen expenses. Therefore, it’s important to consider the following when you’re purchasing a new home:

Plan for the cost of property maintenance

It’s important to take good care of your property. After all, it’s likely one of the biggest investments you will ever make. In addition to regular tasks such as mowing your lawn and switching out a lightbulb, your home will eventually need a fresh coat of paint or a new roof. Costs can add up – and often require immediate attention – so it’s a good idea to plan ahead and create an

emergency fund that can cover these expenses.

Understand product and appliance warranties

Whether your home is a new build or new to you, it’s important to know the status of existing product and appliance warranties in case a repair is required. If you’re purchasing new appliances, consider a manufacturer’s warranty program when making a purchase decision. Look for brands that offer extended warranties and out-of-warranty programs. For example, LG offers an out of warranty program with a flat rate for labour and parts.

Work with licensed trades and technicians

Hire licensed trades and technicians to complete work around your new home. For example, call a licensed electrician to install a new light fixture or a plumber to change a leaky faucet. If you have a home appliance or electronics that requires repair, it’s important to look for a manufacturer-approved and authorized service provider.

5 expert tips for healthy and safe travel abroad

(NC) There’s nothing worse than spending your hard-earned holiday sick in a hotel room. To make sure you can enjoy your trip – and avoid bringing something home that could hurt people, animals or the environment – follow these pro tips:

Practice good hygiene. Washing your hands frequently, using hand sanitizer when you can’t wash your hands and avoiding touching your face are the easiest ways to avoid spreading germs and reduce your risk of getting sick.

Get your vaccines early. Health experts recommend specific immunizations when visiting certain countries, so check to see what you need. Give yourself plenty of time to get all your doses before you leave, as some vaccination schedules take months to complete –including for hepatitis A and B, which are present in much of the world.

Be cautious with what you eat. To avoid foodborne illnesses when travelling, be careful with street food, under-

cooked food and unclean water. Ensure your meals are cooked thoroughly and avoid food that has been sitting out. Wash produce, respect local customs and communicate allergies to staff to lower your risk of getting sick from contaminated food while abroad.

Build in time for resting. It can be tempting to create a fully packed schedule to get the most out of your trip, but that can leave your body tired and vulnerable to catching a virus that’s circulating. Take breaks on busy days and make sure you get enough hours of sleep each night.

Don’t pack restricted foods. Some goods are banned from Canada to protect us and our animals. Food products can carry diseases. This includes pork, which could be contaminated with the highly contagious African swine fever. While this pig disease doesn’t infect humans, it can spread to pigs in Canada and seriously harm farmers’ livelihoods. If you’re travelling, don’t pack any pork products.
