F r o m t h e E d i t o r ’s D e s k . . . ’m writing this just before Halloween – so let me start by saying something that’s very, very scary – there are now 64 days to Christmas! AND, by the time you are reading this editorial there will probably be less than 50! That’s about seven weeks! Can I hear a collect scream from most households! I am guessing way more than half our readers haven’t even begun to think about who’s been “naughty and nice’ much less what present they will be receiving this holiday. But, Purchase Area Family Magazine has come to the rescue! This is the HUGE Holiday Shopping Guide issue!

I

We have complied a handy-dandy guide with ‘who has what’ and ‘where to shop.’ All you have to do is pull out the guide from the center of the magazine and keep it. Whether you’re looking for the latest fashion, a Yeti cooler or a spa day for Mom – I bet you’ll find it in our guide! Check out the calendar for open houses, holiday sales and more! We have articles on downtown Paducah’s Dickens of a Christmas (page 12) and the PSAD huge holiday art sale (page 20). Or visit iListwesternkentucky.com where we have an even bigger calendar and we will be adding more holiday events every single day! I don’t want to overlook the fact that before Christmas there is Thanksgiving. A uniquely American celebration that I have come to love. My husband, Britt Allgood, has shared a wonderful story about his family’s Thanksgiving dinner and a delicious recipe for Pumpkin Gooey Cake (page 23). As we do each year, we will literally drive “over the river and through the woods” to visit his family and share their Thanksgiving meal. I am grateful for many things – this year includes a ‘clean bill of health’ from my doctors at Vanderbilt. I am now officially “in remission.” So, on that note, I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at All Good Media. If you have more to be thankful for than you can name, how about sharing it this year? There are opportunities to share your good fortune and help others all over western Kentucky and southern Illinois. Happy Thanksgiving!

wning a boutique is a dream come true for Carey Story, owner of Carey’s Boutique in Murray. Purchase Area Family is excited to have her and her beautiful daughter, Genesis, on the cover this month. Genesis loved playing with the Fall leaves!

Fulfilling a Dream Carey’s dream began when she was just 6 years old, drawing sketches of clothing, storefronts, and displays. “I have always been a people person,” Carey explained. “I spent countless childhood hours practicing my ‘welcome greeting’ to customers.” Owning a business is something that Carey has always wanted to do, and she considers herself incredibly blessed to have achieved such a longtime goal. Carey was born in Murray and continues in the area. After graduating from high school in 2009, Carey attended Murray State University (MSU) where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Business in 2013, but not before she achieved a few of life’s other milestones. “I got married my sophomore year, opened the boutique my junior year, and started a family my senior year!” Carey laughed as she reflected back on that whirlwind of a time.

The Little Yellow Cottage Even though she was a newlywed college student, Carey decided to “go for it” and started the business while still a student. “I even had an exam at school on our opening day,” Carey told me. The first store location was in a little yellow cottage with red shutters located at the corner of Chestnut and Main in Murray. It was a building that Carey had adored since childhood. “I was thrilled to be there,” Carey told me. “Within a year we simply outgrew the small building and we moved to our current location.” You can find Carey’s Boutique at 1304 Chestnut Street, Suite G, in Murray, just a few blocks down the street from where it all began. “We’ve been here over three years now,” Carey explained. “I get to do what I love every day, and my daughter, Genesis, comes with me which just adds to the fun! I consider myself very blessed.”

Lots of Family Support Though the business carries her name, Carey is quick to tell me that it has taken the efforts of numerous individuals to make the boutique the success that it is today. “I could not ask for a better support system,” she said. “My husband, Isaiah, has supported my dream since day one. He has held my hand throughout this entire journey. He’s my handyman and social media marketing genius to boot!” Carey describes her mother, Sheila Boggess, as the glue that holds it all together. “There is no way I can put everything she does for me into just a few words! Simply put, none of this would have been possible without her. While she helps bring life to my ideas, I can also always count on her to keep me grounded and focused. I just can’t imagine doing this without her, especially now that I have Genesis.” Carey also wanted to thank her amazing sister, Marcy O’Dell. “I can’t even begin to express how valuable she is,” said Carey. “She is my human resources/accountant hero! She takes care of all the things I just don’t have time for at the business end, including employee’s needs and all the dreaded paperwork! She also assists with photo shoots, editing, helps keep the online store up-to-date and gives me valuable tips on fashion for the workplace. There is just so much I could say about her. Having a big sister that looks out for my financial interests as well as my business is one of the best things a girl could have.” Carey also takes pride in her valuable sales team. “They treat the business like it is their own, and for that I am very thankful. I could not ask for a better group of young ladies to be a part of our Carey’s family.”

Addicted to Clothes! “I think I decided I was going to own a clothing boutique when I was around 16 years old,” Carey explained. She got her first taste of fashion retail while ‘This article is paid advertising and the information contained therein is provided by the featured individual or business. They are solely responsible for its accuracy.’

working at the local Maurice’s, where she became the youngest store manager in the entire company. “That position taught me how to handle a great deal of responsibility, but it also amplified my love for clothing and fashion!” Carey takes a practical approach when it comes to inspiration for style. “I take many things into consideration,” she explained. “Including comfort, affordability, and the preference of my customers. I strive for clothing that is cute and trendy, but also something that has the ability to make you feel like a ‘million bucks’”. No stranger to the clothing market in Atlanta, Carey makes the trip every three months to ensure she remains ‘in the know’ about the latest fashion craze. Carey plans to expand her search for the latest trends to various markets in cities across the country, including New York, Las Vegas, and Chicago.

Making Fashionable Clothing Affordable “As a young mom and entrepreneur, I am fully aware of the constant challenge of remaining fashionable while sticking to a budget,” said Carey. “My goal is to find clothing that is extremely versatile. I want my customers to be able to create outfits that can be worn or accessorized in various ways. This allows them to meet their needs for multiple parties and events with as few or as many pieces as they choose.” Carey’s Boutique offers a wide selection of sizes, ranging from extra small to plus sizes up to 3X. The selection only continues to grow as Carey’s has recently added a line of men’s jeans and button-down shirts. “We want our customers to enter the store with the knowledge that they will be able to find something no matter their size, age, or budget. We will do everything we can to help you find the perfect outfit or accessory!” With six shipments of clothes in just this week, Carey is confident that the boutique will have new items filling the racks and shelves from now until Christmas. In addition to clothing, Carey’s also has many gift items and stocking stuffers to choose from, as well as gift certificates and free gift wrapping.

We Encourage Rack Browsing! Carey explained that the ultimate goal of the boutique is to create a shopping experience unmatched by other retailers. “We want our customers to feel a sense of satisfaction when leaving our store, whether they have spent a dime or not,” she told me. “We encourage a little window shopping and rack browsing! It is our top priority that you feel welcome and that your needs are met while you are here.” Carey is a Christian and believes keeping God in her life makes for greater success and happiness. “If I am happy, my employees are happy then we can make our customers feel happy too,” She told me. Carey recently launched the boutique’s new logo, on which is written a Bible verse that Carey and her team hold very dear to their hearts. Proverbs 16:24 reads, “Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” “It’s our motto for the store,” Carey explained. “If we can’t make you feel welcome and appreciated while you are here, then we simply aren’t doing our jobs. I strongly believe that great customer service and affordability make an unbeatable team.”

Shopping Online Can’t drive to Murray today? No problem! Carey’s Boutique launched a top notch website this past summer. At careysboutique.com you can see all the latest clothing and accessories Carey has in the store and purchase them online. Sign up for Carey’s VIP email and receive discounts, special promotions, and invitations to exclusive shopping events. Carey used her social media to invite shoppers to flash sales and to publicize special deals so follow her on both apps!

Fashion Tip for the Holidays “This holiday season,” Carey explained, “Fringe detail is still all the rage. There is plaid of all kinds! Dresses worn with leggings, as well as suede and leather ankle boots, to accessorize the look. Both dresses and tops are sporting crochet and lace with open shoulders. Other hot accessories this season are warm fluffy vests, solid and plaid scarves and simple necklaces with multiple bracelets. Add a simple bag and complete the look! Shop with us at our Murray location or online. You are sure to find the fashion you are looking for to make your wardrobe fun and exciting this season!” v

rowing up, most of us heard our parents say, “If you don’t stop making that face, your face will get stuck like that!” Char Downs must have taken this adage to heart! For the past year she’s been capturing people’s faces by making a life mask of them. And, now she’s created an amazing exhibition of faces. Char Downs is the owner and artist at Pinecone Art Gallery located in the Lower Town Arts District of Paducah. Her latest project involves ‘collecting’ hundreds of faces from around the world which she is going to include in her installation called “ONE COMMUNITY – One Life.” The event opens with a reception on November 15 from 3-6 pm.

Masks From Around the World The ‘masks’ are a compilation from many sources, including the community, friends, family, and other artists. She has many masks of people who live in Paducah and western Kentucky but she also has masks from as far away as Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Austria, and Sweden! In all, Downs has amassed over 300 masks which are included in her exhibit. She is a bit ‘hush-hush’ about the number 300 and why she chose that number. It will all make sense to those who come to see the exhibit which will be ongoing through May 2016.

A Unified Piece of Art The exhibit is a unified art piece involving several mediums, sound, projections and unconventional items. These have been placed in relationships, together, in one space. They express Downs’ visual history, emotional connections and political ideas just as two-dimensional artwork does. The observer is an integral part of the art as they walk into and are surrounded by the space.

Ten Years in Paducah The Exhibition is in part a celebration of the 10 year anniversary of Pinecone Art Gallery. It is also Downs’ way of expressing a love and a connection with this community. She is sharing an art process and creating many beautiful faces, in the form of individual life masks, which will be part of the whole installation piece. The installation is created and displayed in one space, but all the components will be used in other galleries, museums, or universities - rearranged and installed to fit the new spaces. The opening for her installation will mark the exact ten year anniversary of Downs and her husband moving to Paducah from the San Francisco area. They were part of the Artist’s Relocation Project in Lower Town and have been nothing but pleased with their choice. “This community has welcomed and embraced me,” Downs told me. “Moving to Paducah was the best decision that I ever made. This exhibit is a way to express my gratitude to the people who have changed my life for the better.”

14 • November 2015 ilistwesternkentucky.com

“Getting Plastered!” Downs makes the masks by using thin strips of plaster fabric and warm water, which come together to make a white mud. Downs is very meticulous in her process and only made one mask at a time in the front of her art studio. It only takes 30 minutes for the mud to harden and the mask to be completed. Downs laughingly referred to it as a “mini-facial.” She then asked each participant to choose a small object that in some way represents their life or personality and that object will hang from the chin of the mask. There are a wide variety of visuals that were chosen to hang from each mask – everything from jewelry, to art to fishing lures! This process incited creativity in the participant as well. “Some of the faces in the masks are smiling, some are expressionless, and some simply look like they are sleeping,” Downs added. “Those that chose to smile didn’t have to hold that smile for the duration of the process… only for about five minutes.”

Being a Part of It Sarah Stewart Holland, Paducah native and professional blogger had her face and two of her children’s face immortalized at Char’s studio. Holland, together with her 4-year-old and 6-year-old son, are thrilled to be part of this amazing project and deeply admire the reasoning behind it. “I love that Char is inspired by her gratitude for the community,” expressed Holland. “ And that she chose this project as a way to express that. It was a privilege to be a small part of this exhibition with my children. I believe there is no better way to instill an appreciation for the arts in my children then letting them become a piece of the art itself!” Char is very excited to open her installation to the public and invites everyone to experience it for themselves. Pinecone Art Gallery is located in the Lower Town Arts District at 421 N 7th Street. For more information or for dates and times that you can view the installation, please call 270.443.1433. v

omen can do anything these days! They can be doctors, judges, astronauts, professors, or software engineers! There are few reasons left why our girls can’t have a career in any field – a woman could become president! But if young women want to rise to positions of leadership, they have to get the education they need and that often means focusing on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Join the STEM Event The STEM For Girls Event will take place on Thursday, November 12, 2015 from 5.30 – 8pm. It is designed to encourage our young ladies to think about careers that involve STEM subjects. During on- site registration, food will be served from 4:30 until 5:30 pm. All female students, in 3rd grade and older, are invited to participate in this free regional forum. The STEM event is designed to encourage exploration of STEM disciplines through hands-on activities and demonstrations presented by area professionals.

What is the STEM Collaborative? The Kentucky Girls STEM Collaborative Project brings together organizations and programs that are committed to informing young women and motivating them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Their aim is to build a strong, diverse workforce in Kentucky.

The Kentucky Girls STEM Collaborative Project provides the opportunity for programs to increase participation by girls in STEM within Kentucky. The project is based on a model developed by the National Girls Collaborative Project, and replicated through a grant from the National Science Foundation. Project activities are designed to create connections between organizations and maximize access to shared resources. Collaboration enables professionals across projects and communities to find creative solutions and strategies so that they can have a greater impact. They bring organizations together to leverage resources, share information and plan strategically to expand STEM-related opportunities for girls.

Powerful Women with a Powerful Message WPSD Chief Meteorologist Jennifer Rukavina is the keynote speaker and will stress the importance of science and math education for girls. There are rotating sessions that participants can choose from throughout the day. Each girl will attend three sessions. The girls will be grouped by age: elementary, middle school and high school.

In addition to the keynote speaker, the programs/ presenters are: • Emergency Management: April Tilford • Advantages of Robotic Surgery: Dr. Amber Savells

The STEM for Girls Event is coordinated by the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce, Business Education Partnership in conjunction with Murray State and West Kentucky Community and Technical College. The presenting sponsors are H.B. Fuller, Murray State Regional Outreach, and West Kentucky Community and Technical College. The Paducah Chamber, through their Business Education Partnership, is assisting with the coordination of the event. v

Sessions for Parents Too! There will also be a separate session for parents who wish to stay. This session will focus on how to prepare girls for these careers, financial considerations for college, counseling girls on pursuing these careers, an overview of what the girls are doing in their sessions, and planning for college.

How Can My Child Participate? Organizers are encouraging students to register in advance, online at paducahchamber.org and then go to Girls STEM Collaborative. They can register by age group which will help with planning. Attendees will also receive a gift and door prizes will be awarded.

Artists keep 80 percent of the proceeds and the remaining 20 percent is donated to the club to fund field trips to National Portfolio Day events and other transferrelated activities. During the past four years, the event has been a

huge success, selling hundreds of artworks at gift-giving prices, Aho told me.

Be A Part of PSAD PSAD, a division of West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC), offers classes in a wide variety of visual art studio areas and art history. Students may take beginning and intermediate classes for credit, or recreationally, or may choose to pursue an Associate in Fine Arts degree or Associate in Applied Science degree in visual communications. In August 2008, a collaborative effort between the City, WKCTC and regional interests created PSAD to serve the region. In January 2013 the school expanded into renovated facilities within Madison Hall in Lower Town. This 6,700 square foot historic structure now houses a world-class ceramics facility, as well as remarkably equipped studios for new programs in jewelry and metals. In 2014, the school will expanded again, adding a sculpture facility with fully equipped studios for clay, wood, and metals fabrication, as well as a foundry for bronze casting. In January 2016, PSAD will complete its campus expansion with the opening of the 30,000 square foot 2D and Graphic Design building adjacent to the Madison Hall property, housing the remainder of PSAD’s programs in drawing, painting, photography, and design. Classes are offered on WKCTC’s campus; at 409 Broadway in downtown Paducah and 919 Madison Street in Paducah’s Lower Town. New students can register for spring classes at WKCTC beginning November 2. Call 1.855.GO.WKCTC or visit westkentucky.kctcs.edu for class offerings. Spring classes begin January 11. v

A Time for By Britt Allgood

Family Tradition “Let us all hold hands and give thanks.” I don’t hear those words as often as I should, but Thanksgiving is a time to remember the things and people for which we are thankful.

22 • November 2015 ilistwesternkentucky.com

Thanksgiving has always been a large holiday tradition with my family and I’ve tried to carry on that tradition with my new family and friends. As long as I can remember, my parents have opened their home to everyone when they celebrate the bounty of the harvest.

There is a cast of characters that typically partake of the feast including my aunts, uncles, cousins and assorted friends. My family, like most, has experienced change over the years. Deaths, births, marriages and divorce have changed the dynamic but we can always count on a grand meal and fellowship.

for any fall celebration is a pumpkin gooey cake. It’s a simple recipe and is a good substitution for the traditional pumpkin pie, and it makes more servings if you are hosting a crowd. I hope you enjoy this recipe and that you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Live, Laugh and Love. v

Stepping Up To the Plate A few years ago, this family tradition was threatened. My mother suffered a stroke a couple of weeks before the annual celebration. We were all concerned for her health and considered canceling our Thanksgiving plans as we camped out at the hospital. Once my mother was able to communicate, she asked us to go ahead with the meal. It was special to her as well as the rest of us and she wanted us to continue the tradition. My brother Corey, (who is a trained chef) and I stepped up to the plate, literally! You have to know my mother to appreciate the fact that she already had most of the items she needed for the holiday meal purchased. This habit has also rubbed off on my brother and me so we didn’t have to shop much to finish the meal.

The Blessing of Family A lovely turkey was roasted and the trimmings were prepared. Vegetables and desserts were laid out on the buffet as well as my Aunt Pat’s (much sought after) homemade yeast rolls. We even opened a few bottles of wine and hosted a grand meal - but there was one thing missing, Mom. We had family and friends together that rarely see one another. The conversation was energetic as always, but it didn’t last long once the meal had been eaten. The house literally emptied and everyone went to the hospital to visit my mother. She was overwhelmed by the display of care and concern for her, and everyone agreed that the day wouldn’t have been complete without her. We were all thankful that she was on the mend and that the stroke had been mild. Looking back, that was a time of fear and uncertainty but we were thankful that she was still with us. Mom has recovered nicely over the past few years. She still has a few lingering effects of the stroke but she can walk, talk and care for herself which is a blessing. I’m sure Mom is already planning her menu for this year’s Thanksgiving feast. The turkey will be roasted or fried, sweet potatoes baked, (with a special pan made without nuts for my sister-in-law,) and everyone will swarm around the oven waiting on the first of the freshly baked yeast rolls to come out. We will also give thanks for those that we love and the bounty of our lives.

Creating Your Own Tradition My wife, Karen, and I have attempted to start our own family traditions - which isn’t an easy task as our families are scattered over the half of the known world! We gather together at the holidays whenever possible and talk by phone, and Skype when we can. We have also carried on the tradition of opening our homes to our friends and giving thanks. As part of that tradition, I prepare a few favorite dishes and, like my mother, I try a few new ones. As some of you may know, I have a sweet tooth and I indulge it on these special occasions. One dessert I love

Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake - Courtesy of Paula Deen Ingredients Cake: 1 (18 ¼ oz) package of yellow cake mix 1 egg 8 TBSP butter melted Filling: 1 (8oz) package of cream cheese softened 1 (15oz) can of pumpkin 3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 8 TBSP butter melted 1 (16oz) box powdered confectioners’ sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg Directions: 1.Preheat the oven to 350 F 2.Combine the cake mix, egg and butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13 x 9 inch baking pan 3.In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla, and butter and beat together. Add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and mix well. Spread the pumpkin mixture over the cake batter and bake 40 to 50 minutes. Make sure not to over bake as the center should be a little gooey. Allow to cool. 4.Slice into squares and serve with fresh whipped cream.

H

ow could you not love ogres Shrek and Fiona, and their sidekick Donkey even Lord Farquaad! These are, of course the leading roles in Shrek, The Musical which will be presented by the Paducah Tilghman High School Choral Department on November 21 at 2:30pm. and 7:30pm & November 22 at 2:30pm

“I’m A Believer!” Based on the Oscar-winning Animation film by Dream Works, Shrek, The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring new songs from Jeanine Tesori and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. This adaptation includes new music as well as cult Shrek anthem “I’m a Believer,” Shrek, The Musical brings all the much-loved DreamWorks characters to life, live on stage, in an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza with a live professional orchestra. Shrek will be directed by Al Knudsen, whose previous credits include Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella at Tilghman last fall. Matt Hinz, PTHS Choral Director, who codirected Cinderella (2014) and Oklahoma (2013), will again provide musical direction. Matt Hinz is "grateful for the community of Paducah who continue to generously support the tradition of producing and presenting full scale musical productions at Tilghman." He recalled that Paducah Tilghman presented Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma in 1965 and is honored to continue the tradition 50 years later.

Introducing… Shrek will be played by PTHS Sophomore, Alec Wadley and his trusty sidekick “Donkey” will be brought to life by PTHS Senior, Micheal Hassel. PTHS Juniors, Michael Ellen Walden (Fiona) and Will Denton (Lord Farquaad) join 22 other talented students on stage for this hilarious stage spectacle. Will Denton, Junior at PTHS, shared that he did not anticipate being cast as Lord

L to R: Donkey (Micheal Hassel), Shrek (Alec Wadley), Fiona (Michael Ellen Walden), Lord Farquadd (Will Denton)

Farquaad."At first I was apprehensive about the part, but when rehearsals started, I began to enjoy the character more and more. I think that pushing yourself to do something you are uncomfortable with strengthens you as a person. Tilghman provides the opportunity, along with an excellent atmosphere, to do so." Michael Ellen Walden, a junior at PTHS, will be playing Shrek's love interest, "Fiona.” Michael Ellen says she is "so glad to have a school that supports musical productions and gives us the ability to create a theatre community with our peers"

“It’s A Big Bright Beautiful World!” Mary Katz, PTHS Choir Booster President and fundraiser, has been a driving force behind making sure that Paducah Tilghman students have this opportunity. "There is nothing quite as rewarding as seeing these young students reach down and find their inner talents,” she told me. “It’s a privilege to see them develop and then have a chance to show those talents off on stage and share them with audiences." Join our unlikely hero and his loyal steed Donkey in the Paducah Tilghman auditorium as they embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona from a fire breathing, love-sick dragon. Add the diminutive Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits, and a biscuit with attitude, and you’ve got the biggest, brightest musical comedy around! Tickets are $5, $10 & $15 and can be purchased in advance at showtix4u.com or by calling 1.866.987.8167. Please also visit the PTHS Choir Facebook page for more information. v

N

avigating through the Family Court system can be confusing, frustrating and scary. Thanks to a grant received by the McCracken County Bar Association there is now a place where low income individuals can go and receive high quality FREE legal advice for Family Law matters. The McCracken County Family Court Domestic Relations Clinic is here to help!

Who funds the clinic? The grant is funded by the Kentucky Bar Foundation, which is the philanthropic arm of the Kentucky Bar Association. The funds for the Foundation come from private attorneys who wish to provide legal related programs across our state. Former McCracken County Family Court Judge, Cynthia Sanderson, received funds for her successful Arts and Juvenile Justice Program. When Judge Sanderson heard there would be funds available again, she sought out ideas for how to help lower income families that are involved with the Family Court. Through collaboration with our local Legal Aid office, the McCracken County Bar Association has applied for and received the grant to fund these free legal clinics for low income individuals for three years.

Which local attorneys will I see? Attorney Natalie Bash, with Legal Aid, wrote most of the grant. She states “The bottom line is, there’s more need out there now than our office can fulfill. We are spread really thin and I’d like to see as many people get assistance as they can.” The attorneys for Legal Aid have recruited local family law attorneys to volunteer their time for the clinic. Some of the attorneys that regularly volunteer their time are myself, Mark Bryant, Joe Roark, David Wrinkle, Mark Ashburn, Austin Kennedy, Jeff Alford, Fletcher Schrock, Whitney Denson and Michelle Williams. These attorneys, team up with the Legal Aid attorneys, Natalie Bash, Candice Hammons and Catherine Fuller and Legal Aid staff Leslie Ballard (paralegal), have a wealth of experience, compassion and commitment to help those who need our services.

When & where is the clinic? On the last Tuesday of every month, these attorneys set up shop in the McCracken County Library. Individuals can come and meet with an attorney and receive high quality, nocost, legal advice for their Family Law related issues. The most popular Family Law issues are child support, divorce, custody and visitation. The volunteer attorneys are equipped with forms and advice to help folks understand and navigate the Family Court system.

What type of advice can I get? Many times, folks just don’t know or understand the rules and rationale involved with Family Court matters. (FYI…Family Law is also referred to as Domestic Relations.) Finding information and then

understanding the black-and-white letter of the law is difficult. By attending the clinic, individuals can obtain the tools necessary to file their own Motions in the Court and also gather the knowledge and understanding essential to success in the Family Court. “I think any time people have a working knowledge of their rights and how to proceed, it’s helpful to the judge and the court,” said retired Judge Sanderson. My personal experience with the clinic is that most people have been putting off and putting off resolving their issue because they just don’t know where to start or what to do. After a few short minutes talking through the issues, I am able to guide them in the right direction. In some cases, people just need to hear that they have a chance (or in some cases that they don’t). Others just need someone to explain why a case was decided the way it was, or how child support was calculated and how to seek a modification. The majority of our clients are seeking help filing for divorce. After one hour, in most of those cases, the clients will walk out of the clinic with everything they need to get divorced. Our divorce forms are approved by the court which helps make the process much less confusing and overwhelming.

Who qualifies for the clinic? To qualify for the Clinic, individuals and families must meet federal poverty guideline requirements by 100 to 120 percent. If you don’t know if you will qualify, call the Legal Aid Office and they will help you determine if you qualify. People are encouraged to pre-register for the clinic. This helps the attorneys prepare for your specific issue and possibly have you assigned to meet with a specific attorney who specializes in that area. It is also nice to have people pre-register in case one of the volunteer attorneys has a conflict with your case so you aren’t placed in that awkward position. However, pre-registration is not required. The next few clinics are scheduled for November 10th 2015, January 19th, March 15th and May 17, 2016 from 4-6pm. The meeting room is located on the second floor of the McCracken County Public Library (555 Washington Street). To register for the clinic or for more information about the clinic, please call Legal Aid at (270) 442-5518. You may also pick up flyers at the Family Court or the McCracken County Child Support Office. v

The McCracken County Civic Beautification Board

“Turning on of the Lights” this Holiday Season By: Carol Ullerich McCracken County Civic Beautification Board Member

W

ith just a few weeks left until Christmas it’s time to think about Christmas trees and decorations. This year marks the 50th annual “Turning on of the Lights” in the courthouse rotunda. The tree lighting ceremony will take place on Friday, December 4 at 12:30pm It is hosted by the McCracken County Civic Beautification Board (MCCBB). The tree lighting ceremony has remained relatively unchanged in five decades, always blending music, children and treats, but one aspect

from the early days has gone by the wayside. A decorating contest among courthouse offices, in which trees were planted on the courthouse grounds in honor of each year’s winner, has ceased. In 1974, the ceremony was “lightless” due to a power crunch and was dubbed the “turning on of the spiritual lights.”

“A More Beautiful Place in Which to Live and Work” Organized in March 1963, the same year Lady Bird Johnson became America’s First Lady, the MCCBB has received national and statewide accolades. It all began with the appointment of nine “civic-minded women” tackling a stated purpose of recognizing and promoting “projects of civic beautification nature, and seek[ing] the cooperation of various civic and educational organizations, as well as the entire citizenry of the county in carrying out these objectives in making it a cleaner, healthier, safer and more beautiful place in which to live and work.” While the personnel serving on the all-volunteer board has changed, and there has been one male member, the group’s purpose has remained steady. Early in the MCCBB’s infancy, the community was familiar with its visible work like decorating the courthouse and jail each Christmas, conducting clean-up campaigns, and sponsoring a continuous beautification publicity program. Lesser known was the fact that the board sent beautification suggestions to scores of churches, schools, businesses, government agencies and individuals annually, sponsored a special beautification program for youth, enacted a tree-planting program in cooperation with Westvaco, organized a mailbox improvement program, and waged a constant war against junk cars and littering of county highways.

A Locally Funded Mandate Funded by the McCracken County Fiscal Court, the original annual budget for the Board was $1,600. During its first decade, the MCCBB repeatedly won Distinctive Achievement Awards from the National Clean-Up Contest based on progress and physical improvement of the county as a whole, not just beautification; citations from Keep America Beautiful, Inc.; and state recognition for making the residents of McCracken county conscious of beautification, property improvement and litter issues.

campaigns every spring and fall. In 1970, the clean-up campaign consumed the entire month of April with the theme; “Operation Civic Pride and Brighten the Corner Where You Are.” The project was heavily promoted among homemakers who reported significant residential improvements: 145 removed overgrown shrubs; 39 screened unsightly places; 58 razed unused buildings or discarded junk; 221 carried litter bags in their cars; 179 removed dead tree branches and pruned shrubs; and 593 upgraded landscaping.

The Work Continues As community needs change, so does the MCCBB’s work plan. In 1970-71 the Board attacked a 36-point Beautification and LitterPrevention Program combining the attraction of industry and tourism, year-round civic responsibility and pride, and publicizing Wilmington Park – the first seat of McCracken County government from 1825-1832. Board members have even been called upon to testify about road projects and other proposals.

New Members Welcome! The Board meets the first Wednesday of each month, except July and August, at 1pm at the McCracken County Extension Office. Current president Nova Nuckolls will emcee the tree lighting ceremony to which the public is invited. New members are welcome to join the Board. v

Carol Ullerich is a second-generation MCCBB member, a freelance garden writer, and a frequent contributor to Purchase Area Family Magazine.

Current projects of the MCCBB include creation and promotion of the county-wide Quilt Block Trail which now includes 34 sites, and selection of the Distinctive Home of the Month, photos of which grace the walls of Conference Room A in the courthouse. In April, the Board launched a tree giveaway to succeed “Trading Trash for Trees & Treats” which occurred on Free Dump Day for many years. Accomplishments of the MCCBB include sponsoring the planting of 500 flowering crabapple trees (Malus ‘Radiant’), one of McCracken County’s five adopted trees, throughout the county in 1970. Trees were sold from the back of a truck driven by board members throughout the county. The Board’s four other adopted trees are dogwood, redbud, magnolia and serviceberry.

Cleaning Up Our Community When the Board was formed, it adopted a 14-point program of work with its first project being cleaning up roadsides; but it didn’t work alone. MCCBB succeeded by coordinating the entire community with participation from the Homemakers Association, 4-H Clubs, Lions and Lioness Clubs, the RECC, Scouts, FFA-FHA, schools, churches, state and county road departments, the Fiscal Court and the health department. Free Dump Day is a result of the efforts of the MCCBB and its counterpart, the Paducah Civic Beautification Board. Today the effort is concentrated into a single day in April, but initially, there were clean-up

By Megan Redfield Technical advice provided by Justin Story of Grover Tire in Hickory

L

et’s face it - without tires your car won’t move! But your car’s tires also impact your gas mileage, your ability to brake effectively, and your comfort. Uninflated or worn tires make your car more expensive to drive. So, before the weather gets ugly and your tires become critical to you and your family’s safety we asked the experts to tell us some important tire tips.

What Causes Early Wear Out or Irregular Tire Wear? Tread wear or life expectancy is determined by many factors: Driving habits and style of driving, geographical location, type of vehicle, type of tire, how vehicle is maintained, how tires are maintained, etc. Just as vehicles, drivers, and driving habits are different from each other, not all tires are the same and they can wear at very different rates. For instance, high performance tires for sports cars wear more quickly than touring tires for a family sedan. However, a variety of factors can cause a tire to wear out sooner than expected, and/or cause it to wear irregularly and create noise or vibration. We suggest that you have the tires/vehicle inspected by a tire retailer to determine if there is a mechanical or maintenance issue that could be contributing to a rapid or irregular tire wear.

It’s More Than Just the Number of Miles It’s not just the miles you drive on a tire that cause it to wear. Tires are composed of various types of material and rubber compounds. These component properties change over time. For each tire, this evolution depends upon many factors including weather, storage conditions, and conditions of use (load, speed, inflation pressure, maintenance etc.) It all depends on what the tire is subjected throughout its life.

76 • November 2015 ilistwesternkentucky.com

Your tire dealer can tell you a lot about your driving habits by the wear on your tires. Tires that wear in specific patterns or places give clues to mechanical issues with your vehicle as well as the type of driving you do on a regular basis. Checking tire air pressure, and regular tire maintenance such as rotation, alignment and inspections can help you save money.

Why Is Proper Tire Pressure Important? Simple things, like checking your tires’ pressure to make sure that they are properly inflated, can make a real difference in how long your tires last. Under or over-inflated tires don’t wear evenly and won’t last as long. For example, a tire that is consistently 20% under- inflated can last 20% less. That means a tire that should normally last 60,000 miles would be worn out by 48,000 miles. Also, since the front and rear axles, and right and left sides of your car wear down your tires differently, rotating your tires regularly between the different positions will ensure they wear evenly and last longer.

It Can Save You Money on Fuel It’s also important to check tire pressure each time it’s serviced. When the tire pressure is properly maintained, it will increase fuel mileage. Under-inflated tires are one of the biggest causes of using excess fuel.

attention. If you feel your car vibrating when you drive it your tires, steering system and suspension system should be checked. If left unattended, the vibration could cause excessive tire and suspension wear. It could even be dangerous.

What Should I Do If My Vehicle Is Pulling to One Side? If your car isn’t aligned properly it can adversely affect handling. Your alignment/tire shop or vehicle dealer can check electronically to see if the alignment settings are correct. If the tires are evenly worn, the alignment is in order and there is still a pull, the front tires should be criss-crossed (as long as they are not a directional tread design) to see if the pull changes directions. That means that the tires on the front are placed on the back wheels, on the opposite side. There isn’t time in this article to cover the many tire issues you might experience over a driving lifetime. Your local tire retailer is always there to evaluate your tire wear and to recommend the right tire for your car. So don’t forget to check your tire pressure regularly and happy trails! v

**Information for this article was obtained from michelinman.com, goodyear.com, ntsb.gov/safety/safety-alerts/Documents/SA_044.pdf, and exchange.aaa.com.

Under-inflated tires have higher rolling resistance, which means it takes more effort from the engine to move your vehicle. Checking your tire pressure is something an individual should do regularly, especially when driving longer distances. It can affect the safe handling of your vehicle. Hot and cold temperatures can also affect tire pressure, so it’s a good idea to check the pressure seasonally. If you have an older car, you are probably going to put 30-35 pounds of air in the tires. With new cars, each car is different. For example, if you have a Chevrolet, your old model may have been 35 pounds, but your new car may be 30 pounds. There is a sticker, usually inside the door, that will tell you what the recommended amount of tire pressure is. As little as five pounds difference will turn the ‘low tire’ light on.

Why Does Tire Wear Matter? Too little tire tread can create unsafe driving conditions. When tires can’t grip the road, a driver may lose control of his or her vehicle. When roads are wet or snowy, tire tread depth is very important. Anytime precipitation gets between your tires and the road, you need the tread to cut through it and maintain as much contact with the road surface as possible. The more shallow your tread, the more easily you may lose traction when driving in the wet or snow; reducing speed in those conditions helps you maintain grip.

What Should I Do If I Notice a Vibration? Any vibration is an indication that your car has a problem that needs

A

lmost everyone experiences heartburn at some times in their lives. No big deal, take some ant acid and move on. But if you are someone who experience heartburn frequently it could be something more serious. It’s not a good idea to ignore a treatable digestion affliction and it could lead to more health problems.

Acid Reflux Acid reflux is the backward flow of stomach acid into the esophagus. Acid reflux is more specifically known as gastroesophageal reflux. During an episode of acid reflux, you may taste regurgitated food or sour liquid at the back of your mouth or feel a burning sensation in

your chest (heartburn). Even minor occurrences can lead to major health issues and leave you miserable.

GERD Sometimes acid reflux progresses to GERD which is a more severe form of reflux. GERD stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. This occurs when the muscle between the esophagus and stomach becomes damaged or weakened. One in five people have GERD and many are completely unaware of the damage that it may be causing. The most common symptom of GERD is frequent heartburn. Other signs and symptoms may include regurgitation of food or sour liquid, difficulty swallowing, coughing, wheezing, and chest pain — especially while lying down at night.

Treatment for heartburn and other signs and symptoms of GERD usually begins with over-the-counter medications that control acid. If you don't experience relief within a few weeks, your doctor may recommend other treatments, including prescription medications. According to the FDA in 2009, 21 million patients filled PPI prescriptions such as Nexium or Prilosec at outpatient retail pharmacies.

78 • November 2015 ilistwesternkentucky.com

If not properly treated, GERD can lead to serious medical conditions such as chronic cough or hoarseness, esophagitis, bleeding, scarring or ulcers of the esophagus and Barrett’s esophagus.

Barrett’s Esophagus With this condition, tissue in the esophagus is replaced by tissue similar to the intestinal lining. Barrett's esophagus is most often diagnosed in people who have long-term GERD. Only a small percentage of people with GERD will develop Barrett's esophagus but it is associated with an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer. It’s important to have regular checkups for precancerous cells.

New Surgical Options Surgical therapy is available for those who do not respond to lifestyle and medication therapy or who do not wish to remain on medications. Some surgery options consist of wrapping the top of the stomach to reform the natural acid barrier and fixing the defect in the diaphragm and hiatal hernia if present. This type of surgery is called a fundoplication. Surgical therapy and medical therapy are generally equally effective. The decision of medical versus surgical therapy depends on how well the patient is likely to tolerate surgery, their response to medical therapy and the underlying causes of the GERD.

**Information for this article was obtained from fda.org, salgi.org, tririvershc.com, barrx.com, and mayoclinic.org.

Radiofrequency Ablation RFA therapy has been shown to be safe and effective for treating Barrett's esophagus. Radiofrequency energy (radio waves) are delivered via a catheter to the esophagus. They remove diseased tissue while minimizing injury to healthy esophagus tissue. This is called ablation, which means the removal or destruction of abnormal tissue. RFA is just one step in the process. Once the damaged tissue is ablated, the patient still needs to continue with other anti-reflux procedures. If you have recurrent acid reflux or heartburn, you should visit your doctor. While you may not have GERD or Barrett’s esophagus, you could find relief from your symptoms. v
