from the editor's kitchen... A Pilgrim's First Christmas

T

hankgiving is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s about the “f ” words I like to use – family, food and fellowship. I remember cooking my first Thanksgiving dinner over 38 years ago and, of course, we took a picture of the table spread with turkey and all the trimmings. I look pretty serious in that picture below and I remember it was a big deal that this was 'the pilgrim’s first Christmas’ if you will. You can probably tell by the hair and make-up that this was the 70’s and I had just arrived from London, England the previous August. I was still getting used to American culture and traditions. I didn’t really understand American football back then, but I was very interested in assimilating and becoming part of the great USA. It’s fun the share old pictures like this one.

That was quite a few years ago of course and I couldn’t’ have envisioned what I would be doing today - writing my 13th Thanksgiving editorial for Purchase Area Family Magazine. We’re proud of this November issue which contains our Holiday Shopping Guide. It’s filled with holiday cheer and lots of way to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. Be sure to visit our advertisers' open houses and don't forget to Shop Local! r. LaNita Flanary graces our cover this month with her three ‘fur-babies’, Pomeranian Fancy Foo Foo, Bermese Mountain dog Ellie and Beagle/Heeler mix Polly. She’s showing off her favorite place, Flanary Keepsake Farm; a working farm that she has been growing and decorating for years. We are very proud to feature Dr. Flanary this month as she has been a part of this magazine for over 12 years.

A Truly Local Vet

Dr. Flanary is truly a local veterinarian. She has owned and operated the Flanary Veterinary Clinic since 1997. LaNita is a western Kentucky native through and through. She was born and raised on her family farm in Paducah and attended Farley elementary school. She went to Reidland middle and high schools where she graduated Valedictorian. She earned several scholarships which allowed her to complete a pre-vet curriculum at Murray State University. As a junior she was accepted to Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. LaNita graduated summa cum laude in 1995. “I have loved animals since I was small child,” LaNita told me. “I grew up on a family farm where I had a pig that I named Mary Jane. I used to dress her up and feed her candy! I also had a bottle fed calf that I bought with my own money. I called her Precious. I don’t have children so my animals are my family,” she said laughing. LaNita still enjoys being with

her menagerie of animals consisting of cows, chickens, pigs, rabbits, dogs, ducks, geese, and cats. For the past 19 years LaNita Flanary has been providing excellent veterinary for pets and animals from all over western Kentucky. Dr. Flanary works alongside Dr. Kimberly Rushing, an associate veterinarian who has helped her with this large and varied practice for the past four years. Rushing is originally from Clinton and like LaNita grew up on a farm. She attended Murray State University and graduated from Auburn Veterinary College in 2003.

"A pet is going to need health care just like any other member of the family." Personalized Care for Your Pets

Dr. Flanary understands how important your pet is to you. Flanary Veterinary Clinic is dedicated to providing professional and compassionate care in a friendly, knowledgeable and state-of-the-art facility. “We strive to give your pet personalized, caring attention along with excellent diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical techniques,” LaNita told me. “We are proud to offer wellness examinations geared towards

all phases of your pet’s life, from new puppy and kitten programs, to the special needs of senior pets. Our whole-life care philosophy reflects our belief in the importance of the bond between you, your pets and our entire staff.

Plan for Pet Health

“I want to remind your readers that a pet is going to need health care just like any other member of the family,” Flanary continued. “It’s something every pet owner should budget for. Healthy pets are more active, live longer, and provide the best companionship. Your pet needs health checkups and dental care on a regular basis and it will likely need help with an injury or illness during the course of its life time. For example, pedigree dogs and cats are susceptible to arthritis and other bone and joint problems.” “Thanks to modern medicine, new therapies and surgical treatments, our pets are living longer and longer,” Dr. Flanary told me. “But they also experience the same kinds of problems as older humans – dementia, tooth decay and incontinence.” Flanary Veterinary Clinic focuses on prevention of these types of problems as well as treatment when they occur. “Don’t forget that dogs and cats age at seven times the rate of humans,” Flanary explained. “Taking your pet to the vet once a year is like you seeing a doctor or dentist only once in seven years! I believe pets should have bi-yearly physical exams. They are the key to finding subtle changes before your pet becomes sick with a major problem.”

Diagnostics & Prevention

When you go to your doctor and have your annual physical you expect to get blood tests and other tests, so that they can check that your organs are all functioning properly. Dr. Flanary will probably order blood work as part of your pets physical or to help her diagnose an

illness. “Diagnostic tests are a window to look into a pet’s body and I feel strongly that they are very important,” explained Flanary. “The results can tell us what’s going on and help us catch problems much earlier. We also use digital radiology and ultrasonography, as well as EKG’s to help us. Dr. Flanary makes sure they are up to date with modern veterinary practices. “Nowadays we can send the digital x-rays to a radiologist through the computer and have the results read the same day,” she told me. “It’s the same for the EKG’s. Specialists such as veterinary cardiologists are just a click away!”

State-of-the-Art

Dr. Flanary is very proud of her state-of-the-art clinic which includes an operating room, dental area, radiology department, isolation ward and in house diagnostic lab. In the past couple of years the clinic has added laser therapy to the long list of state-of-the-art options at Flanary Veterinary Clinic. “Therapeutic lasers are amazing and help us treat a wide variety of conditions,” explained Dr. Flanary. “It reduces inflammation and healing time to such a great extent that we now routinely use it after a surgery. It’s also very helpful in our senior pets and eases arthritis symptoms, and pain.”

Common & Exotic

Flanary Veterinary Clinic treats pets of all kinds and types – from dogs and cats, to snakes and ferrets! “I once had to perform a C-section on a chinchilla,” LaNita told me. "I treat a lot of birds and reptiles, rabbits and even pot belly pigs. And, because I own over 50 of them, I’m also known locally as ‘the goat lady’!”

Flanary Keepsake Farm is a working farm that has been growing for years. It's festively decorated for Fall.

Dr. Flanary is known in her community as "The Goat Lady".

Giving Back to the Community

This past September a local charity, Missing Bella, challenged Dr. Flanary to a Spay-A-Thon! They asked her to spay or neuter 100 dogs or cats in just five days! “I believe that responsible pet owners should spay or neuter their pets,” explained Dr. Flanary. “Our local shelters are full of cats and dogs that don’t have a home, and unfortunately, there are people who simply cannot afford the expense of spaying or neutering.” LaNita donated all her time and performed spay or neuter surgery on 101 pets in the course of a week! “I’m planning to do another Spay-athon next year,” she told me. Dr. Flanary is very close to her elderly parents who she helps care for. Unfortunately, her mom has been diagnosed with Senile Dementia. LaNita supports the Alzheimer’s Association through their annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s which is held each October in Paducah.

Accepting New Patients

Flanary Veterinary Clinic is located at 200 Eagle Nest Drive, off Exit 11 in Paducah. For more information or to make an appointment for your pet’s care call 270.898.9738. Office hours are Monday, Wednesday & Friday, 8am-6pm; Tuesday & Thursday, 8am-5pm, and Saturday 8amNoon. Appointments are preferred and emergencies are always considered a priority. Walk-ins are handles as time allows and dropoffs are welcomed. If you call after hours you will be connected to an emergency veterinarian on call. Flanary veterinary Clinic also has boarding kennels that are climate controlled, closely monitored and provide “spoiled rotten” hotel stays for your pet.

*

Bitsy Angel Fund It is a very sad day when Dr. Flanary has to put a client’s pet to sleep and as long as she has had a clinic LaNita have not charged for this service. In 2011 she had to put her much loved pet Bitsy to sleep and it really reinforced the pain that a pet owner feels when they lose a part of their family. Flanary created the Bitsy Angel Fund so that owners can contribute in the memory of a past pet or when the time comes to put a pet to sleep. All the proceeds raised help other pets live or live a better life by assisting those who can’t pay for their pet’s health care. “There is no better way to honor your pet or my Bitsy than to help another pet be able to live,” said LaNita. 2017 Study Abroad Arriba! Its !

by Sarah Ladd

S

aint Augustine said, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." Are you looking to ‘turn some pages” and broaden your horizons? Have you wanted to visit the exotic city of Havana? This summer the ‘travel abroad’ program at WKCTC is headed to Cuba from May 14 - 22, 2017 to learn about the Cuban culture and is inviting western Kentucky residents to join the college students on the trip. This is the eighth study abroad program offered by the college, and WKCTC professor Pat Blaine is organizing the trip again this year. In years past the group has traveled to Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica and the beaches of Normandy. Cuba was selected this year because of the changes in travel restrictions to the island nation, its unique culture and heritage. This island nation is located west of Haiti and north of Jamaica and is the largest island in the Caribbean. It also has the most inhabitants with a population of over 11 million people. Cuba is known for its cigars, vintage American cars, beautiful beaches, Salsa and Casino dances and music, and baseball. Cuba is on a lot of people’s travel wish list!

Study Abroad Program

WKCTC study abroad trips are open to not only students, but also to faculty and community members. This mix provides a nice assortment of views from people of various careers, lifestyles, and ages. These expeditions may be used as educational trips and classes are available so that you can learn more about your travel destination and prepare for the trip. For anyone interested in learning about Cuba, this year’s class is SPA 115 – Culture of Cuba. The course can be taken for credit or audited, and travelers over 65 can apply to take the course as a Donovan scholar

with waived tuition. The cost of tuition does apply in order to receive college credit.

What Does the Trip Entail?

Students and community members attending this trip will enjoy eight nights in specially selected hotels, breakfast every day, seven lunches, and six, three course dinners. You will be provided with a Cuban Visa and health insurance. Participants will visit scenic Old Havana and Cienfuegos, Ernest Hemmingway’s home, Trinidad’s rich landscape, and the Buena Vista Social Club, as well as other famous Havana sights. There will be a local Cuban guide as well as a multilingual director who will work together to ensure the travelers learn as much as possible about this attractive country. Travelers will meet with Cuban historians and artists to hear firsthand what day-to-day life in Cuba is like. They will get a firsthand working knowledge of the culture - not just great pictures to bring home. The travelers will also get to ride in an old steam train to visit Remedios, one of the oldest cities in Cuba. The tour will place great emphasis on art, history, cultural practices and beliefs. Travelers will meet Cuban students and citizens to learn from them what it’s like to live in this culturally rich island.

Two Departure Sites

Travelers can opt to purchase round-trip airline tickets out of Nashville when they enroll for the tour in order to stay with the larger group, or they can travel on their own to Miami to meet up with the group. After visiting Little Havana in Miami, the entire group will fly by charter plane to Havana, Cuba.

The trip begins with an orientation to the adventure ahead as well as an informal dinner so that everyone has a chance to become acquainted. The next day, you will arrive in Havana and from there will begin your tour Cuba. On day 8, there will be a farewell dinner and on day 9, travelers will arrive back in Miami. From Miami, everyone will travel separately back to their home.

These Trips Are Great!

“It's really rewarding,” says Vivian Harvey, a professor who went on a prior study abroad trip to Mexico. “I was surprised that even a program as short as one week, if well planned and well prepared for, can offer such a life changing experience for your students.” Student Jonathon Dunning, who went on the WWII tour of Europe, made the following comments about his experience: “Following (my professor) around on the tour gave me the opportunity to get additional information about each historical site and museum we visited, and it allowed me to observe how a professional historian analyzes the evidence of history provided at such places. As a current graduate student studying history, I cannot put into words how valuable this experience was for me to grow in my field. Going abroad is a worthwhile opportunity for every student.”

of the trip does not include any activities you may choose to do outside of the program, or for souvenirs you may wish to purchase. For WKCTC students, there are scholarships applications available by contacting Pat Blaine at pat.blaine@kctcs.edu or going to westkentucky. kctcs.edu. Additionally, a fundraising activity has been organized to assist with the cost. This fundraiser will be selling poinsettias this Christmas. The official deadline is February 1st, 2017, but anyone interested in participating is encouraged to sign up as early as possible because prices will go up the closer we get to this date. Interested parties may register at cubawithpatblaine.grouptoursite.com or by contacting Pat Blaine at 270-534-3207 or the email above.

*

Pat Blaine, the WKCTC Study Abroad coordinator, explained how these trips can benefit people, especially students. “Students who travel abroad develop a better understanding of different cultures as well as an understanding of a country’s history, art, architecture, and economy,” she told me. “They often learn new skill sets such as monetary exchange, how to use public transportation to move through a large city, and often, flying for the first time. Students return home with increased focus on their studies, knowing that there is a much larger world in which they can work and travel.”

When? How Much?

The dates for this year’s tour are May 14 - 22, 2017. The price of the trip is $4,389. Please note that this does not include the price of an airplane ticket. After a $450 deposit, monthly payments are available. The price

Young Children in Western Kentucky

N

ovelist James Baldwin wrote, “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them." School systems are finding out quickly that there are some children that get left behind in the educational world. It’s not from lack of ability or intellect; it’s because they need more good role models in their lives.

by Amy Noles

There are several programs in our region that have been working to change this by providing mentoring opportunities in schools in high school, middle school, and even elementary schools. Looking for a way to contribute to our youth and future generations? How About volunteering for one of these amazing mentoring opportunities!

Community Challenges

None of our communities are immune from children facing challenges that affect their education and ability to learn. Most have their share of families facing absentee fathers, single or incarcerated parents, and children being raised by grandparents or foster parents. Add to that, challenges like poor school performance, behavior problems and self-esteem issues, children, regardless of parental situation, are in need of a means of intervention. Many communities have stepped up to these challenges and formed mentoring programs to support kids as they enter school and progress towards adulthood.

West Kentucky Mentoring Inc, in Murray

West Kentucky Mentoring Inc., in Murray, is one of those programs. Their vision is to provide mentoring relationships to children in western Kentucky in order to build people of character. They are a site-based one-to-one mentoring service for children ages 5 to 18. Most of their mentors visit the child at their school for one hour each week. Many of their mentors are Murray State University students. They enroll children in their program by referrals and parent requests. The children simply need to have an academic or social need. The volunteers are thoroughly vetted with a long interview, three reference checks and a nationwide background check for criminal or domestic offenses. In 1996, the challenges of some local students were brought to the attention of Murray State University, specifically Dr.

14

Roger Weis and the Youth and Non-Profit Leadership Students. After much research and study, they came to the conclusion that the Murray area needed a “mentoring program.” Until July 2011 the agency was affiliated with the national organization Big Brothers Big Sisters but due to changes in the national organization, BBBS of West KY was dissolved. However, community need was still very much present. In August a group of individuals from various areas of leadership formed a new, local agency to provide the services under the name of West KY Mentoring Inc. For more information about how you can help in this initiative, call 270.761.5744, email wkym@murray-ky.net or visit volunteermurray.org.

Reading PALS Paducah

Reading PALS (Partners and Literacy Support) serve as mentors to local elementary or middle school students. Beginning in September of each year, every PAL is matched with an individual student and is expected to attend a weekly breakfast or lunch, and a reading session. By volunteering just one hour a week, this program is making a difference in a child’s life. Organizers believe that failure to acquire literacy skills in the early elementary grades can lead to many issues including poor academic outcomes, increased problematic behaviors, a higher probability of dropping out of school, limited employment opportunities, and a higher likelihood of living in poverty. This belief, topped with the fact that many of the children needed more effective role models in their life, formed this group. Reading PALS began in the fall of 2010 with one second grade class at McNabb Elementary school in Paducah and 21 volunteers. PALS is now in nine schools, in both Paducah City and McCracken County school districts. This program serves students from 1st - 7th grade. PALS is a testament to the commitment of its volunteers. 21 has grown to 140 volunteers and the original group of students are now 8th graders. The majority of them have had the same mentor from the time they began in 2nd grade. If you are interested in becoming a Reading PAL, call 270.442.4691 or visit unitedwaypaducah.org.

Mentoring in Graves County

The Graves County mentoring project currently has around 40 mentors paired with children at Symsonia Elementary school

and several others with Farmington and Lowes elementary. This is the fourth year for Symsonia, second for Farmington, and fourth for Lowes. Graves County Middle and Graves County High School both host mentoring programs and they just brought the program down to younger students. They believe the younger they pair students with a trusted adult, the more successful students will be. They also feel that it will help to ease the transition between middle and high school.

LEAD Academy

Graves County High School’s LEAD Academy also has a mentoring program for its students. This academy provides individualized attention and hands-on learning for students who struggle in the more traditional high school setting. Students chose the academy's name, an acronym for Leaders Excelling through Apprenticeships and Determination. The goal of the program is to offer everything they can to ensure student’s success. The Mentoring Group Project provides students the opportunity to be exposed to additional positive adult role models through planned meetings and activities. It is designed to give the students extra support during their crucial high school years. LEAD Academy teacher Stephanie Stanfill told me that this program is crucial to their students’ success. “They serve as academic coach,” explained Stanfill. “They provide basic needs as "gifts" when needed, and often serve as just someone to vent to and/or listen.” For more information on any of these mentoring opportunities, please call 270.328.2656 or visit graves.kyschools.us.

ICE ICE, BABY! E by Amy Noles

ight years ago Paducah Parks Services began hosting an outdoor ice rink in downtown Paducah during the winter. The Paducah Ice Rink was open for three winters, 2008 – 2010, from early November to early January. It was so popular that the first year operation was extended until early February. Attendance for the 12-week period was 15,500. In 2009, the attendance was 11,627 for the 8-week period with 2010 bringing around 8,021 for eight weeks.

The ice rink was wildly popular but weather conditions made it difficult to keep the ice actually ice. A couple of warmer winters wreaked havoc on the rink conditions and it would certainly have lost money if it had been continued. Now we have the Paducah Convention and Expo Center; an indoor venue where weather conditions can be controlled. They are is very excited to announce the return of one of Paducah’s most popular events - ice skating!

It's Big & It's Inside

No more melting ice in the sun – this rink is inside Magic Ice, of Miami, Florida, will install a huge 60’x 120’ indoor ice skating rink in the Schroeder Expo Center. Installation will begin midNovember and the rink will be up and running through midJanuary. Baptist Health has graciously agreed to be the main sponsor of the rink, which has been named “Baptist Health Ice in the Expo.” The rink will open on November 19. Rates are $7 rink fee plus a $3 skate rental fee. While school is in session, the schedule will be Tuesday–Friday, 3-9pm, Saturdays, 10am-10pm, and Sundays, 1-10pm. While schools are out for winter break, the rink will be open Tuesdays–Saturdays, 10am - 10pm and Sundays, 1-10pm.

Can't Skate? Take a Lesson

As there isn’t a skating rink close to Paducah, many people don’t

know how to skate. No worries, the Expo Center will have skating lessons – definitely a great idea if, like me, you don’t want to spend more time on your rear end then on your skates! Basic single group lessons that include how to properly fall, to get up, to march in standing position and to march while moving will be $25. Private figure skating lessons will be given for $45 and include learning basics, jumps, swizzles, and backwards wiggles.

You Can Rent the Rink!

Besides offering skating hours for the public, the rink will host special events, such as character skates and figure skating lessons. You can book the rink for birthday parties, company parties as well as schools and church groups. Campbell told me that the Expo Center is also looking into collaborations with local business, schools, and churches to bring things like ice hockey to the rink.

A Community Project

The demand for ice skating rink since the city introduced it eight years ago has increased and the region as a whole has expressed interest in getting it back. “This project will be used as a marketing tool for our wonderful city,” said Michelle Campbell, Director of Sales & Marketing. “The ice skating rink is one of Paducah’s most popular holiday attractions," added Chuck Tate, director of operations for the Paducah Convention and Expo Center. “We feel this presents a great community partnership opportunity.” “Baptist Health is honored to sponsor this project as our gift to the region,” said hospital president William A. Brown. “This is a wonderful holiday and winter gathering place for families and friends, where they can enjoy the season and get some good exercise at the same time.”

It’s helpful to know what emotions are normal and expected for a person going through separation or divorce. Being aware of them can help you face these emotions when they come. You won’t be as surprised, and you’ll be better able to function even while experiencing the tough emotion. Two of the most hard-hitting emotions are loneliness and sadness. You may also experience anxiety, feelings of worthlessness, bitterness, anger, and depression. If you are dealing with any of those feelings, you are not alone. These are typical emotions when a marriage has come apart. Remember that you can face them and still move forward to find moments of joy during the heartache. “With the upcoming holidays, you’re entering a period of time when you’re probably going to experience the feeling of loss from your separation or divorce more powerfully than you’ve already experienced it,” explained psychologist Dr. Paul David Tripp. “But if you’ve taken time to think about what may be coming in the days ahead, you can be prepared for it.”

Be With People Who Help, Not Hinder

You need the support of family and friends this holiday season,

Grieving During the Holidays For people grieving the death of a loved one this holiday season, Lone Oak Baptist Church is offering a GriefShare Surviving the Holidays seminar on November 20, 2016 at 5pm, Room A101. but you will need to make wise choices regarding which of those people are going to be supportive and will help in a healthy manner. Unfortunately, some friends or family members will offer the wrong advice in an attempt to help you or cheer you up. They may encourage you to “get over it” and “have some fun.” Asking you to put aside your emotions and enter into a social scene that you aren’t ready for. Or, they may offer their own negative opinion of your former mate and fan the flames of bitterness, and anger when that’s not what will help you. “You want to be around friends who are going to build you up,” advised marriage and family counselor H. Norman Wright. “Friends who are going to listen and nurture you. Friends who are going to encourage you to find good, emotionally safe places. Protect yourself above all.” A safe place to find people who understand is through a divorce recovery support group. Such a group can provide you with friends who understand what you are going through and who can be a mutual support through this holiday season.

Have a Plan

You may wonder whether to try and keep the holidays the same as much as possible or whether to make a complete change. “I went into Thanksgiving without being prepared,” said Lesia. “For Christmas, I decided to do things differently so it would be something new to look forward to instead of dread.” Recognize from the start that this Thanksgiving and Christmas will be different. You cannot recreate past years, and forcing things to be the same will only magnify the differences. Once you understand this, then it’s time to start creating a plan.

"Surviving the Holidays" Seminar on November 12, 7-9pm DivorceCare Surviving the Holidays is a free event where you can learn practical, effective strategies to help you make it through the holidays. To register or find out more about DivorceCare Surviving the Holidays, call 270.442.2728 or email cchilds@fbcpaducah.org.

Your plan should be flexible, but thorough. If you have children, involve them and other family members in helping you build your holiday plan. This can be fun for everyone. Make a list of everything you typically do in preparation for the holidays. Take a look at that list. Then decide which of those items are too much to handle this year. Your energy level is likely lower as a result of the emotional toll of marital breakup, and your finances may be lower too. You might not have the energy to bake six dozen cookies this year; perhaps you can’t afford to buy gifts for the nieces and nephews; and you don’t need to hang all those holiday lights. Create a new, simplified list of things you’d like to do in preparation for the holidays.

List Parties and Family Get-Togethers

Write down times you typically get together with family, friends, coworkers, church friends, neighbors, etc. Decide ahead of time which of these gatherings you will attend, which you’ll decline and what to do about get-togethers that are no longer possible without your ex-spouse. If you spent past Thanksgivings at your in-laws’ house, make a plan as to what you’ll do instead this year. Think about the office Christmas party: maybe it isn’t a good scene if you are feeling vulnerable. If you have children who will be splitting the time between both parents, make sure you are prepared for the times you will be without the kids. Focus on things that you like to do, and plan to do them.

"You need the support of family and friends this holiday season." Traditions

Traditions may need to change or be revised: these include when and how you open presents, what you eat at holiday meals, songs that you play in the house, decorations, and anything you’ve done year after year that included your former spouse. You will want to maintain some traditions, but it’s also important to create new ones. This can be fun and it is a healthy practice for you. “Creating new traditions was really helpful,” said Monica, “because it gave me a way to celebrate what I do have instead of what I don’t have.” In order to be prepared for the coming holidays find a local support group or counselor where can learn what emotions to expect. It’s important to be around safe people who will encourage you in a way that’s healthy and where you learn to create a plan that suits your new situation.

It's a Capitol Christmas

by Amy Noles

F

or almost 50 years, the U.S. Forest Service has provided the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree to the nation. Each year a National Forest is chosen to provide the tree and this year the Payette National Forest has been selected. The 80–foot Engelmann Spruce will be cut on November 2 near McCall, Idaho and prepared for the 2,000-mile expedition to Washington D.C. Paducah’s proximity to two U.S. Forest Service areas, the Shawnee National Forest and Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, has created the exciting opportunity for Paducah to host the tree during its long journey east. Paducah will welcome the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree for a celebration on November 21 and 22. “I am really looking forward to this event,” said Laura Oswald, Marketing Director of the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It’s such an honor for Paducah to host the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree and add our region’s spirit to the national celebration this November. The festivities surrounding the tree’s arrival at Noble Park will include crafts, holiday music and activities perfect for children and families.”

Walk the Festival of Lights

The Capital Christmas Tree is scheduled to arrive in Paducah on

NOVEMBER 2016 PAFM

Monday, November 21 at 5:30pm. It will be located in Noble Park, at the parking lot next to the baseball fields. The 20th Annual Christmas in the Park light show will have its kickoff ceremony that evening. After the ceremony, attendees can participate in a one-of-a-kind opportunity to walk under the lights. Traffic will be closed to vehicles until 7pm while people who want to see the tree ‘up close and personal’ may travel by foot through the lights and past the visiting tree.

Activities, Music and More!

A free, family-friendly event, hosted by Paducah Parks Services, will take place when the tree arrives on Tuesday, November 22. Join the fun in Noble Park, Paducah between 9 and 11 am at the parking lot next to the baseball fields. A banner travels with the tree to Washington D.C. and you can sign it. The banner will be displayed as part of the holiday exhibit in our nation’s capital. Activities include a visit from Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl, in addition to Santa and Mrs. Claus. Photo opportunities with the official tree will be provided by the Forest Service, along with nature stations and commemorative souvenirs. Holiday music will be provided by area school groups. Additional fun things happening that day include viewing the Idaho Potato Truck, bigidahopotato.com, interpretive displays

about the US Forest Service and information from event sponsors, Adopt-A-Tree. There will be nature stations to teach students and attendees about trees and wildlife. School classes can decorate their own cedar tree with pre-made ornaments there will be a lot going on!

Pre-Register Your Class Today!

The Paducah Parks Department has invited local elementary schools to bring their students to this event. For planning logistics classes should pre-register. For more information or to RSVP, contact Taylor Morsching at Paducah Parks Services by email at tmorsching@paducahky.gov or by phone at 270.444.1331. It has taken a lot of community support to make this event possible. Community and regional partners hosting the event include Choose Outdoors, Friends of Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, Paducah Bank, Paducah Civic Beautification Board, Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau, Paducah Parks Services, Paducah Power System, Shawnee National Forest and USDA Forest Service.

The Tradition of the Capitol Tree

The tradition of the Capitol Christmas Tree, or “The People’s Tree,” began in 1964 when Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John W. McCormack (D-MA) placed a live Christmas tree on the Capitol lawn. This tree lived three years before succumbing to wind and root damage. In 1970, the Capitol Architect asked the U.S. Forest Service to provide a Christmas tree. Since then, a different national forest has been chosen each year to provide “The People’s Tree.” In addition to providing the tree to the U.S Capitol grounds, thousands of ornaments created by school-children across Idaho will decorate the tree, and 60 to 70 small companion trees in federal government offices in Washington D.C. The Payette National Forest has been working with local artists and a variety of organizations throughout Idaho to develop prototypes of ornaments, with a “re-use and recycle” theme encouraged in the development. Over 8,000 handmade ornaments representing the state symbols of Idaho will be made by Idahoans to appear on the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree. After arriving in Washington, D.C. the tree lighting is expected to occur in early December. The exact date will be determined by the U. S. Speaker of the House of Representatives, and is likely to be broadcast on C-SPAN. Learn more and track the tree along its route at capitolchristmastree.com. For more information on the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree event in Paducah, contact the Paducah Parks Department at 270.444.8508.

It's a Wonderful Life: Live from WVL Radio Theater 7:30pm Clemens Fine Arts Center focus.westkentucky.kctcs.edu 270.534.3212 The classic holiday movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, is being brought to life with a new twist on the Clemens stage. The hilarious 1940s “live broadcast” of the beloved film is a fresh new adaptation set in the fictional studio of WVL Radio Theatre on a cold, snowy winter night. Due to the blizzard, the professional voice actors are unable to get through, but the show must go on — so a small but intrepid band of employees manage to create the dozens of movie characters and scenes using just their voices and a sound effects table. Your holiday season is sure to be wonderful with this show!

Help at the Holidays Ways We Can Make a Difference This Christmas by Amy Noles

'T

is the season to be jolly, but for many families in our area, it is not as easy to be jolly. Many folks are struggling to manage financially and the burdens of gift giving for their children is sometimes overwhelming. Most of us are fortunate and have not only a roof over our heads, but food to eat and money put aside for gifts. We thought it would be a great idea to let our readers know about ways you and your family can spread the joy of Christmas this year. We are quite fortunate to have an array of excellent programs in the area that are directly targeted to help those in need.

Christmas Cops

Formerly known as Shop with a Cop, this program is celebrating its 30th year with the Paducah Police Department. On December 17, local law enforcement agencies are hoping to host 30 qualified families in honor of this year’s anniversary for a day of shopping. The families are selected based on many criteria and may not be receiving assistance from other agencies at Christmas time. Specialized focus is placed on families that are working to improve their economic situation through further their education or job skills and may not qualify for other programs. Volunteer officers are paired with families for a day of shopping at WalMart for toys and clothes and then at Kroger for groceries. WalMart provides lunch and even gets Santa Claus there for the kids. Buses for transportation are provided by McCracken County Schools, and CSI provides vans to help deliver all the goodies.

Paducah Area Christmas Cops Inc. is a nonprofit charitable organization that is funded through the annual Christmas Cops fundraiser that will be help midNovember. Donations from individuals and businesses allow this program to continue to grow and helps build stronger bonds between the community and its law enforcement organizations. If you would like to donate to this program, please bring monetary donations to the Paducah Police Department with attention: Gretchen.

Bikers Toy Run

The Bikers 33rd Annual Toy Run in Paducah, is Saturday, November 19, 2016. Admission is one new toy or $10 per person. All motorcyclists are welcome, as well as cars and trucks. Everyone is asked to meet at 12pm on the Bargain Hunt Parking Lot, 1927 Irvin Cobb Drive in Paducah. The ride will end at Noble Park around 1pm where there the toys that are collected will be presented to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

A bike show will be held at the park. Please note that motorcycles must be ridden in the Toy Run in order to participate in bike show. Cars and trucks will line up behind the motorcycles. There will be raffles, a quilt auction, a tattoo contest and an appreciation party at the American Legion following the run. They will be collecting until December 16.

from infants to teenagers, who have been placed in their care. Toys and gifts for older children are needed as well as school materials and monetary contributions.

The Bikers Toy Run benefits the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, who in turn distribute it throughout nine western Kentucky counties. This state agency cares for, finds and supervises homes for abused and neglected children. There has been a great increase in the number of children,

Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and who in turn distributes them as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Raffle prizes and auction items are used to raise funds at the Bikers Toy Run. The Toy Run helps make Christmas brighter for these and other children in need. The run also replenishes the emergency fund, used to provide medicine, clothes, diapers or school supplies throughout the year. The ride is hosted by Donald “Wildman” & Ann Allbritten. For more information, please call 270.554.7174 or email allbrittena@bellsouth.net.

Over the years the Foundation has supplemented local campaigns with tens of millions of toys valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. Additionally, the Foundation provides approximately one million dollars’ worth of promotional and support materials to local campaigns each year. Some of the places that you can drop off new toys in our area include: AAA Stowaway office Southside Paducah, Bankers Life and Casualty (Lone Oak Rd. Electronic Cigarettes Are They Helpful or Harmful?

C

an e-cigs help me quit smoking? It’s important to point out that E-cigarettes have not been scientifically proven, or FDA-approved, as a method to stop smoking. Studies suggest that they tend to lead to the dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes - or eventually the person goes back to smoking. The best proven cessation aid is using one of the seven FDA approved nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) as directed, in addition with a comprehensive smoking cessation program or counseling. Purchase District Health Department provides the American Lung Association’s, Freedom From Smoking class or there is the Kentucky’s Tobacco Quit Line, which can provide support and information. Online marketing and advertisements promote e-cigarettes use where smoking is prohibited. This is confusing to the public because it causes people to think smoking is allowed, as well as continues to normalize smoking. Which in turn

creates problems with enforcing smoke-free policies. Within five minutes of e-cigarette use, it causes similar lung effects as smoking does. It’s not just water mist found in that vapor that tobacco companies want you to think. Besides the nicotine, and heavy metals that are found in e-cigarette aerosol, it also has harmful chemicals, which can cause cancer, formaldehyde is one of them. If you have any questions, contact Kaylene Cornell at #270-444-9625 ext. 180. It's All About the Chemistry by Sarah Ladd

S

eems like there’s a week designated to honor and celebrate just about everything these days - even chemistry. Who knew! The American Chemical Society hosts an Annual National Chemistry Week in an endeavor to educate more Americans about the importance of chemistry

66

NOVEMBER 2016 PAFM

and the many roles it plays in every area of our lives. The week began as a National Chemistry Day in 1987 and then evolved into a National Chemistry Week in 1993. Why celebrate chemistry? Well everything is made of chemicals. You are made of chemicals. So is your dog…and your chair… and the

sun. Drugs are chemicals. Food is made from chemicals. It’s what makes our face cream fill in those fine lines and wrinkles, it’s what makes the oil in our cars lubricate the engine and it’s why our beer is clear and not cloudy!

It's Sooooo Complicated!

Many Americans, especially girls, shy away from studying the sciences, especially Chemistry. Men outnumber women 76% to 24% in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related jobs. While women make up around 58% of the entire workforce but only 45.9% of chemists are women, and the numbers only go down from there in other science fields. Maybe it has to do with the fact that many girls are encouraged to pursue the arts for a career as opposed to the sciences, in spite of the fact that women have proven to be just as good with math as men.

the idea that STEM jobs are hard, we can learn so much. “No career is hard if you love what you are doing,” Swift told me.

Don't Try This At Home

Getting started with chemistry is easy and fun. Boyd suggested a simple chemistry experiment that is safe to conduct at home – something you can do with your kids to get hem interested in the subject and de-mystify it a little.

Why Chemistry?

“Chemistry is in everything,” Becky Boyd, a lab technician in the Quality Control Department at Ashland Specialty Ingredients in Calvert City. “You do not have anything in life without chemistry. It is in the food you eat, makeup you put on, what you drink, the clothes you wear, and even the building blocks of own body.” Boyd believes more girls might be interested in chemistry if they realized that it’s more than just colored liquids in bottles. It is life itself. Cindy Swift, a Chemistry Research Associate III, believes more girls might pursue careers in STEM related jobs if they were simply exposed to the many fascinating implications and diverse uses of chemistry in everyday life.

What About Math?

You'll need... 2 cups baking soda 1 cup cream of tarter 6 table spoons Epson salt 1 table spoon dried lavender or rosemary (or scent of choice) Essential oil (scent of choice) Coconut oil Spray bottle with water 4 measuring bowls Silicone cube mold(s)

Instructions...

Let’s be honest math skills are important in any science and especially in chemistry. “My experience is that some people hear the words "math" and "chemistry" and they automatically believe they can't do them,” said Boyd. “But it is just like anything else you do.” “Yes, math is part of the key,” agreed Swift. “Math is a big part of what we do every day. A procedure in a lab is just like a recipe for a meal. The ingredients are different, but you still have to follow steps in a certain order to get what you want in the end.” Both of these professionals explained that if we can get past

1. Combine baking soda, cream of tartar, and Epson salt into a bowl and mix thoroughly 2. Separate mixture into 4 bowls. 3. Add to each bowl: 1 table spoon dried scent and 20 drops of essential oil and 2 tsp. coconut oil 4. Once combined, test mixture by squeezing small amount in your hand (if crumbles spray with water until it doesn't) 5. Pact tightly in mold. 6. Let dry for 24 hours. 7. Remove from mold. 8. Use and enjoy - (you’re practically a chemist!)

STEM for GIRLS Event

Now we know how fun chemistry can be - how do we show the young women in our community? STEM is hosting an event to encourage and educate girls about science related careers. This STEM for Girls event will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at West Kentucky Community and Technical College’s Emerging Technology Center. Girls from 5th grade through high school are encouraged to come and experience an evening of hands on learning about careers in science,

Honoring Our Veterans by Sarah Ladd

E

ach year in November we celebrate and honor our veterans. Many communities hold parades, and events such as essay or poster contests. Unfortunately, a lot of people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of the wounds they sustained. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

Armistice Day

Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day” in honor of the end of World War I which was declared on November 11, 1919. In 1926, an “annual observance” decree was passed. November 11th would become a national holiday in 1938. President Eisenhower changed the name to “Veterans Day” in 1954. Not to be confused with Memorial Day, which honors our fallen soldiers, Veterans Day is in place to honor both

70

NOVEMBER 2016 PAFM

deceased and alive Veterans who have served our flag both during peace and war. Veterans Day is Friday, November 11th 2016 and National Veteran’s week is November 6-13th. This year is the 50th Commemoration Year for Vietnam Vets as is also the Year of the Woman Veteran.

Join the Parade

Paducah Parks Services hosts an annual parade to honor our veterans. The Veterans Day Parade will be held on Friday, November 11th. It will begin this year at 6th and Washington Streets in downtown Paducah. It will continue up 6th Street and then onto Broadway. It will disperse at Broadway and 17th Street. If weather conditions are kind, the West Kentucky Community and Technical College Television Production Department will record the parade and set it to music. It will air on Government 11 and Paducah-2 channels.

Celebrating Service

Before the parade, at 10:30am, there will be a ceremony to honor the Distinguished Veteran of 2016. This Veteran will be the Grand Marshal of the event. A non-veteran will also receive the 2016 Patriot Award. This person is a citizen who, while never having served in the military, has devoted their time and efforts to serving veterans and helping with veteran affairs in

The wounds of war can go far beyond what meets the eye. Veterans returning from combat have a constellation of health concerns, including physical issues, psychological issues and psychosocial issues concerning things like work and family. Beyond the physical injuries they may have suffered rates of post-traumatic stress are greater for these wars than prior conflicts. Recent statistical studies show that rates of veteran suicide are much higher than previously thought, as much as five to eight thousand a year. Veterans experience much higher rates of mental health disorders, sleep issues and depression than civilians. Maybe the saddest statistic of all is that more active duty personnel die by their own hand than in combat.

We encourage you to find ways to connect with, and honor the veterans around you this holiday season. our community. The Daughters of the American Revolution have organized a Veterans Day Essay Contest and the winners will be announced during the opening ceremony.

Beyond Veterans Day

While we take one day out of the year to honor our heroes, far too many live every day of the year facing health and many other challenges. We have more living veterans than at any other time in our nation’s history. As of September 2014, there are about 2.7 million American veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (compared to 2.6 million Vietnam veterans who fought in Vietnam; there are 8.2 million "Vietnam Era Veterans" (personnel who served anywhere during any time of the Vietnam War).

We encourage you to find ways to connect with, and honor the veterans around you this holiday season. Perhaps the most important this we can all so for our veterans is acknowledge and thank them. Next time you see a person in military or retired military attire introduce yourself and get to know them as a person. Most importantly, thank them for their service. At this holiday giving season please consider donating to one of the many charities that support our veterans – be sure to check that they are reputable and highly rated. woundedwarriorproject.org thehugsprojectofwky.com fisherhouse.org fallenherosfund.org operationhomefront.net

Christmas Lights in the Park

Each year, Paducah Power System sponsors a magnificent display of Christmas lights in Paducah’s Noble Park. During Christmas in the Park, PPS employees and community volunteers man the Santa House at the park, collecting donations of money and nonperishable food for area helping agencies. This event takes place on November 21 - December 31. Christmas in the Park began in 1997 with Christmas lights donated by JF “Doc” Hicks and Jimmy Kinsey. Both men had displays at their homes for many years. Since then PPS has purchased many new displays and added several from corporate sponsors, and now, a half million twinkling bulbs illuminate the park between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day each holiday season. Thousands of people visit the event, making it a holiday favorite for people of all ages.

Christmas Cards in The Park In addition to the Christmas in the Park light display, organizations in Paducah and McCracken County place huge, brightly decorated greeting cards in Noble Park. Paducah Parks Services provides the posts to set up the cards, the personnel to install them, and lighting. So...

You're Hosting Thanksgiving Dinner by Britt Allgood

I

t's that time of year again. The weather is cooling, the leaves are changing and it’s only a matter of weeks until Christmas. There’s just one thing you have to do before then, host Thanksgiving dinner! It’s about now that the task ahead of you is sinking in and the panic in your belly is beginning to grow. But no need to panic…iCook is here with a few tips and ideas. So, calm down, breathe and read on.

It's Just Dinner

Thanksgiving dinner is just that, a dinner. You’ve made dinner before, right? At least I hope you have and even if you don’t do it very often, you have some time to prepare. I’m going to walk you through the process and offer a few tricks to help make this holiday a bit less stressful. Most of this article is around the planning and preparations for your meal. One option is having the meal catered – although personally I wouldn’t consider this because I love to cook for people – but it is an option. It might be expensive, and you will have to order ahead, but if you really aren’t up to the challenge or the situation won’t allow you to cook, it’s better than a burnt bird and a house full of unhappy guests.

Make Your Lists & Check Them Twice

Besides the actual cooking, your biggest task is getting

76

organized! Well, that’s based on the assumption that you know a little about cooking, but I’m going to take that as a given. I’m not saying that you need to be a Michelin ranked chef but as long as you have the basic skills and stay organized; you can pull this off and look good in the process. Getting organized is as simple as making a few lists - you may even need a list of your lists, but I digress. I always start my planning with the guest list and meal time. Guests will typically be family and friends but there is always that unknown taga-long. The guest list will be the basis for the rest of your planning. This will also dictate your work load or how many others you need to recruit for preparations.

Sizing the Bird or Not

Now, let’s assume you are cooking and expect 10 to 12 people over for dinner. That’s a fairly safe number and you can get away with one turkey of modest size and the trimmings or side dishes. How do I know that, well rule of thumb for sizing the bird is about 1 pound per adult serving but if you want left overs, go 1 ½ pounds per adult. So, for a 12 person meal, you should cook a turkey between 12 and 18 pounds. This rule does take into account the bones. If you are cooking for a small group, 2 to 4 people, I would consider cooking a turkey breast. Thawing and cooking times

will be reduced. Of course you could always have a nontraditional Thanksgiving and serve duck, pork, lamb or even fish. I do recommend informing your guests of your choice as they may be expecting a Turkey.

The Menu

Now that you’ve decided on your main dish, which I’m going to assume is turkey, it’s time to choose your side dishes. Turkey dinner generally includes some or all of the following: dressing, green beans or green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, carrots, cranberry sauce and gravy. Over the years, I’ve witnessed many a strange side dish including the odd Jell-O salad. Remember, if you have some doubt about a dish, don’t make it!

Bread & Desserts

Don’t forget the bread, desserts and drinks. I love to bake but typically don’t have the time to make rolls from scratch the day of Thanksgiving. You can purchase lovely baked goods ahead of time or make your own the day before and warm them as necessary. As for desserts, I will typically have two or three different desserts for a meal of this size. A nice pumpkin gooey cake, a pie and maybe a pudding or trifle all of which can be made ahead are lovely additions to any holiday meal. Choice is a wonderful thing especially if Aunt Bess forgot to mention her nut allergy and all you have is Pecan Pie.

Heavy on the Veg

My typical menu for a Thanksgiving feast is heavy on the vegetables. I tend to choose dishes that I can prepare ahead of time like a squash, cauliflower, or green bean casserole that can be heated just before serving. I also choose some dishes that are quick to prepare like peas and carrots, or broccoli to fill in the gaps. We always have dressing or stuffing because my wife likes it cooked in the bird - but that’s a story for another article. If your gathering is going to be larger than my 12 person example, may I suggest you ask your guests to bring one of their favorite side dishes - don’t forget to ask what it is. This will reduce your work load and you can concentrate on the rest of the activities. You can always fill in the gaps if you know what they are bringing. Better to have a bit too much than not enough food.

Drinks are another important part of the meal. Your options should revolve around the guest list. Are your friends wine or soda drinkers? Do you have coffee and tea? This will not only help you out but will help you decide if you need to get extra ice to stick in the freezer.

Where Am I Going to Put Everybody?

Seating arrangements constitutes a list of sorts. You need to have adequate seating for everybody whether it’s at the “grown up” or “kids” table. Are you going to have enough people that you can eat in the dining room, or do you need to clean out the garage and borrow chairs, and tables from your church? You really don’t want to wait to the last minute for this one because you will be busy in the kitchen or visiting with everyone on Thanksgiving Day. Are we using paper and plastic or china and silverware? This will also depend on your number of guests and how over the top you may want to go. I honestly don’t mind eating off a

paper plate as long as the company and food are good. It will also save the poor soul slated for dish duty a lot of time.

The Shopping List

Once you’ve decided on what you are serving and how you are going to serve it, it’s time to make out the grocery list. Do this early in the process and get the critical things purchased such as the turkey. Everyone else is celebrating on the same day and stores do run out of things. I write down my menu and then pull all the recipes for what I’m preparing. Then I make a comprehensive list of everything I’m going to need to prepare all my dishes. Next, I check to see if I already have any of those items and if I do they get marked off. I would also suggest double checking your pantry a few days before the big day. It doesn’t hurt to make sure someone didn’t eat the French fried onions or mushroom soup you need for the green bean casserole. I’m not kidding, it’s happened to me!

Logistics

Once you have done your shopping list and still have those recipes out, check cooking times and temperatures. It’s really frustrating if the turkey is cooking at 350 F but you need to bake the casserole at 425 F. By doing this, you can figure out what needs to be cooked in a certain order to insure that everything is ready at approximately the same time. Yes, it’s another list but it will help you keep everything running smoothly. Use as many tricks as you can to save time. Make dishes ahead of time, especially deserts and you can mark those off your list. Pick up fresh rolls on Wednesday from the bakery and you won’t have to worry about it later. Use pre-cleaned vegetables or clean and chop things a day or two ahead, and put them in the refrigerator.

pepper and a splash of vinegar and bring to a boil, then cut it back and let it simmer for hours. This will be the stock for some wonderful soup to warm you on the days until Christmas. Your last hurdle besides overcoming a turkey induced coma will be clean up. Be sure to refrigerate your leftovers in a timely manner, and then draft your friends and family to help clear and wash those dishes. It’s the least they can do for having you host Thanksgiving this year. Live, Laugh, Love, Eat Well, and Give Thanks.

Post Meal

Hopefully you have estimated the amount of food well enough that you won’t be eating leftovers until Christmas. If you aren’t that lucky, consider using some of the leftovers in other dishes. Peas, carrots, and mashed potatoes are a great start on a Shepard’s Pie. Leftover turkey is great for cold sandwiches, hot browns, or tetrazzini. I’m also guessing that you won’t mind having some leftover desserts. May I also suggest shoving that turkey carcass into a pot; a stock pot that is! Dump in some carrot, onion, herbs, salt,
