Makeover
featuring Warren Wilkes
Warren Wilkes Salon ~from Geek to Chic~
For our first Dallas makeover, our friends at the Warren Wilkes agreed to transform our makeover winner, Christina. Christina is a young lady of 25 who hasn’t updated her look since her teens. Because of her petite frame, glasses Before and unstyled hair, usually worn in a ponytail, Christina looked more like a 15-year old than the polished young professional that she aspires to become. We whisked Christina off to the Warren Wilkes Salon in Uptown, where a trio of Warren’s creative team transformed her from girl to woman in just a few short hours. Ekisra (his name means “perfect freedom” in Laotian), the salon’s Artistic Director, is a talented stylist with over 10 years of experience at top salons such as Jose Eber in Beverly Hills. He immediately envisioned cutting her long locks into a minimalist, low-maintenance, contoured bob - not only to create a sharper and more sophisticated
look, but also more in keeping with her pint-size proportions. Ekisra, who likens the relationship between cut and color as a “marriage”, then consulted with colorist Stephanie Catalan, who took Christina’s mousy brown to a rich chocolate before highlighting with several frosty browns and a warm caramel. The result? A multi-dimensional harmonious blend of deep, dynamic color to frame and flatter her naturally beautiful features. For the final dramatic touch to Christina’s transformation, Kenlie Richardson, an Estee Lauder trained makeup artist, applied products from Lauder’s Pure Color line on her eyes, cheeks and lips. To bring out Christina’s vivid amber eyes, Kenlie used Pure Color Indigo Blue, Champagne Bubble, Pearl Stone and Clove shadows; to warm her skin tone and accent her cheekbones, he chose the Pure Color Bronze Kit; and for her mouth he used Pink Writer pencil to further define her

Skin care
SKIN 101 with Kathryn Dean Anti-Aging Skin Care
Skin is the largest organ on our body. As we age, our skin develops wrinkles, lines and age (sun) spots. Depending on your skin type, you may find you are pre-disposed to the signs of aging more so than others. Here are some non-genetic culprits that cause us to age not so gracefully: • The Sun - Fine lines and wrinkles arise because of irregular thickening of the dermis and because of a decrease in the amount of water held by the epidermis. Overt melanin production, hyperpigmentation, is also a side effect of sun damage. • Muscle Movement (People tend to smile or frown more on one side than the other, or consistently sleep on the right or the left cheek. Crow's feet around the eyes are due to smiling and activity of the eyelid muscles. Worry lines on the forehead are due to contraction of the muscle when raising the eyebrows.) • Gravity is responsible for folds in the skin.
Below are some basic SKIN 101 solutions you can try at home, before you decide to spend thousands at your plastic surgeon’s office. These are guaranteed quick fixes that will have a visible impact on your skin: • Avoid excessive time in the sun. Apply a sunscreen of a minimum
26 pure
SPF 30 on your face, body and hands fifteen minutes prior to any sun exposure to allow the sunscreen to take effect. • Avoid smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke or other pollutants. Smoking increases facial lines and wrinkles and delays skin healing. • Exercise. It’s good for the skin as well as for your general health. • Aging skin feels and looks better when moisturizers are applied regularly. These improve the waterholding capacity of the skin. Choose one that feels nice to apply, doesn't sting or burn or provoke acne. • Exfoliate your face and body with a gentle scrub/exfoliant once a week. • Drink plenty of water to rehydrate internally. Because moisture content is related to water, not oil or grease, oily-skinned people need to rehydrate as conscientiously as their dry-skinned counterparts. • Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. • Generally what is healthy for your heart and brain is also good for your skin. Please feel free to submit a skin care or beauty question for possible publication in our next issue at kathryn@puremagdallas.com.

in the Spotlight The rock-n-roll hair couture super stylist moved to Dallas in 2000. The move was a planned strategy to improve and strengthen Alexander's passion to teach hairstylist. In July-2008 Alexander opened his fifth salon concept in uptown Oaklwn Ave. Alexander Antonio Haircraft. Alexander's greatest influence came from the late great master stylist extraordinaire — John Sahag from New York. Sahag's revolutionary dry cutting method, was embraced by Alexander. After seeing Sahag in action — Alexander knew he had just met the man that ultimately inspired the next best level of success within his career. Alexander was asked to be a part of Sahag's legacy team which was a "Its time for hair momentous honor. Being trained in the inner most professionals to raise guarded secrets of the Sahag the bar in professional Method was the ultimate in hair services and master art experience for Alexander. In 2007 his team the Hair Warrior craftmanship." Nation, headlined, and took best in show honors at the biggest hairshow event in Texas. ”It's time for hair professionals to raise the bar in professional services and master craftsmanship.” When ordinary is over... when inspiration and motivation are the siblings to passion... it's not just a salon... it's not just a hair studio... it's Alexander Antonio Haircraft! Welcome to Pure magazine’s new fitness segment! We provide you with quality information you can use right now to enhance your life and well-being. In our first installment, we show you one simple move with multiple benefits-- it releases tension from the low back, hips, and hamstrings while strengthening and toning the legs at the same time! Come kneeling into crow pose with your heels together, hands on the floor (or on a block) in front of you. Exhale in this position. Then inhale as you straighten your legs, activating your inner thighs with a slight lift of the toes. Your heels are touching, toes pointing out at an angle. Continue exhaling and inhaling between these two positions. This motion also aids with lymphatic drainage, which means you help reduce fluid accumulation in places like your hips and inner thighs. Knees become stronger and more supple as you strengthen the supporting muscles. You also get more blood flow to the brain. This exercise is great for taking a quick break from your busy day. In future issues, we explore how yoga keeps you youthful and focused. Superfood nutrition and supplementation for optimum health and beauty. Conquering the afternoon energy slump blues and sugar cravings. Meditation techniques to sharpen your mind so you can benefit from all life has to offer. Creating an exercise lifestyle that serves you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Have a burning fitness or health question? Contact Jennifer at: fitness@puremagdallas.com Namaste! artist interview
Christopher Martin Whether you’re a first-time art buyer or a seasoned collector, you’ll find Christopher Martin’s work at his own gallery, full of pieces you’ll want to take home and hang. His abstract paintings on glass are imbued with color and suffused with light, making for a highly accessible medium that both corporate and private admirers can appreciate. Inspired by the patterns and rhythms of nature and weather, Christopher gives us a window through which to view a microcosm of our natural environment – a tiny piece and moment of the cosmos. Several works are studies detailing foliage markings while others capture random patterns of water droplets
or splashes - allowing the viewer a peek into an organic kaleidoscope of unexpected order. It is precisely this order which harnesses the colorful chaos, bringing strength and harmony to each work. But Martin didn’t plan it this way – he creates by allowing each painting to take on a life of its own – experimenting until “the piece finds its pulse, that’s the exciting part,” he says. For Christopher, art is a very internal process – especially in Dallas – a city which lacks natural countryside and outdoor beauty. His abstractions draw on “patterns of nature occurring within other patterns” and are then processed through soul-searching sessions of substantive painting. 34 pure
Christopher, who is completely self-taught, believes his modicum of expression can only be found through individual experimentation rather than formal training. But he looks to several modern bluechippers for inspiration in style and technique. He cites the fluidity of Brice Marden, the luminosity of Ross Bleckner, the prolific versatility of Gerhard Richter, and is awed by the intense energy of Jackson Pollack.
His dream dinner party however, would include such guests as pioneering visionaries Richard Branson (of Virgin) and Steve Jobs (of Apple). When asked if he ever gets “artists’ block,” Christopher laughs and then takes on a serious tone as he explains that he must stay busy and keep making things, “as an artist I create when it becomes too painful not to. Making something I am proud of is how I unblock.” Christopher knew he wanted to be an artist in 1993 or 94, the very first time he sold a painting. As his “own worst critic” (as he puts it), it is important for him to be happy with his work and part of that is the validation he gets from selling a painting. Since then, he has begun to experiment with a few other mediums – specifically digital photography. To view Christopher Martin's work, visit his museum styled gallery at 2412 Victory Park Lane by the W Hotel where you'll find his most recent abstract paintings and photography in a stunning setting. – Andrea Reich

Trammel Crow Asian Art From the sands of the pyramids to the shadows of the Great Wall – veneration of the afterlife has been a common thread uniting both ancient and modern civilizations around the world.
Inspired by the tomb-mania gripping Dallas with the arrival of “Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharoahs,” the Crow Collection of Asian Art celebrates its newest exhibition, “Tending the Afterlife: Chinese Tomb Art from the Neolithic Period to the Ming Dynasty” on view from September 27, 2008 to July 12, 2009. This comprehensive installation reveals the great mysteries shrouding China’s buried treasures over six thousand years of its glorious history. Nearly all of China’s major eras are represented through a stunning array of tomb goods, ranging from intricate bronze mirrors and belt-hooks to fearsome earthenware figures of attendants and guardian deities. Many of these
works of art are on view to the public for only the first time. See firsthand how China’s ruling families and the social elite spared no effort in filling their grand tombs with precious works of art in jade, bronze, gold, silver, and clay. The wide variety of accoutrements on view served to ensure that in another world, the deceased would continue to possess wealth, power and religious tranquility. In addition to their intrinsic artistic merit, the diverse works of art in this exhibition document important details of daily life that have long disappeared into the mists of time.
The Crow Collection of Asian Art is a permanent set of galleries dedicated to the arts and cultures of China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. The museum is located at 2010 Flora Street, in the Arts District of downtown Dallas, and is open Tuesdays-Sundays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with extended hours on Thursday until 9 p.m. Admission is free. 38 pure
The Crow Collection of Art will open two new exhibits on Oct. 18. Texas Collects Asia: Japanese Folk Art and Texas Collects Asia: Contemporary Art will show the evolution of Asian art – from Japan’s time honored traditional crafts to China’s contemporary painters who are crossing boundaries. Japanese Folk Art highlights works of art that were produced by hand in large quantities for daily use and enjoyment. Visitors will appreciate these works for their great artistic expression, the power of their formal simplicity, the pure beauty of the material, and the natural patina they have taken on from years of use. The exhibition includes a large group of Daruma or Indian Buddhist figures that are often treated more with humor than reverence. Contemporary Art features some of Asia’s finest modern painters, photographers, and sculptures. Their work reflects the cultural changes in Asia, as they struggle to define and articulate their Asian identity in a rapidly changing world. This exhibition
is a forward-thinking presentation of Asia, whose frenetic pace of modernization has created numerous contradictions. The new Asia is preoccupied with growth and progress; however, traditional elements of its deeply ingrained history remain.
Japanese Folk Art continues through December 28, 2008; Contemporary Art continues through January 4, 2009. The Crow Collection of Asian Art is located at 2010 Flora Street, in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. The Museum is open Tuesday-Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on Thursday until 9 p.m. The museum is dedicated to the arts and cultures of China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. Admission is free. pure 39

Sister Barbara by Barbara Rosenthal
I am an unpublished writer and have never won a literary award or contest of any sort. But I know that writing is my gift, and I am dedicated to the art. I believe, if nothing else, when I leave this world, I will meet God, or her publicist, who will say, “You used your talent best you could despite little recognition or validation. And then I will get in. When I sent my first query to editors, I papered the bathroom wall with my rejection letters - content to have been creative in their disposal. Later I learned that is what all discarded authors do with their rejection letters. Three publishing houses asked to read the manuscript. In the end, 42 pure

For the truly talented, making music is more about communicating intangible x-factors of mood and emotion and then mastering the mechanics of chords, beats and words uttered. And so it is with bubbling-under L.A. buzz band OSLO. Pure: Maybe you could start by telling us about some of the places you guys have traveled and how it’s influenced your music. OSLO: Collectively we have circumnavigated the globe. We don’t know how, but hopefully for the better. Pure: What inspired ya’ll to be musicians? OSLO: Music inspired us to be musicians. It is a universal language. Even though I could not understand music on a deeper level, I knew that I wanted to be involved in it very early in my life. Pure: How would you describe your music? OSLO: Special dark and a bit sexy! Pure: You came to Austin recently to play SXSW. How did that go? OSLO: Amazing! Austin and the people are very beautiful. Pure: That's good to hear. Of all the songs you guys have written, which is your favorite to perform? OSLO: All Terrain (track 3). Pure: When I saw you perform that song at SXSW it became one of my favorites as well! So give us a typical day in the life of Oslo. OSLO: Lunch, vapor hits and Rock! Pure: Mmmmm... vapor hits. And just how was Oslo created? OSLO: A drunk night at a Hollywood party.
Pure: Tell us where you get your inspiration for songs? OSLO: Life. Pure: Yeah... I love that cereal too. Ha ha. Do you think that the internet will finally free up music from corporate control? OSLO: Corporation$ always f#@% up every good intention... Rent the documentary “The Corporation.” Pure: I'll have to check it out. How important is the audience and their reaction to your performance? OSLO: Extremely! We wouldn't exist without an audience... Everyone shares an emotional experience at an Oslo show. Pure: I can vouch for that! So... what makes your heart sing? Mattia Borrani: Vocals / Guitar Gabrial McNair: Guitar Kerry Wayne James: Bass
OSLO: Women! Pure: And for the women... boxers, briefs or boxer briefs? OSLO: Mattia: Boxer briefs Gabrial: Boxer briefs Kerry: None For an in-depth video interview go to www.PureMagDallas.com

auto review
A New Breed of Bentley The Bentley Continental GT is a monumental departure for this conservative British builder of ultra-rare and luxurious cars: It brings an entirely new look with hints of old Bentleys, uses completely different technology than traditional models and targets a younger buyer with a six-figure price tag that’s almost half that of other Bentleys. The Diamond Series features diamondquilted leather on doors and seats, drilled alloy pedals, a leather-and-chrome transmission lever and dark-stained walnut or piano-black wood trim. Other features unique to the Diamond Series include special carbon ceramic brake discs, 20-inch, 14-spoke alloy wheels, with three new colors and various insignias. The Continental GT is the first Bentley to use a compact 6.0-liter W12 engine and all-wheel drive instead of traditional V8s or V12s and rear-wheel drive. The innovative engine and AWD system were developed by Bentley. The 552-hp twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 is basically two V6 engines attached side by side. It’s more compact than a traditional V12— and allows for more efficient packaging and a larger interior.
AWD was chosen because it transfers the engine’s monstrous power more safely and effectively to the road. Sophisticated stability control, traction control and braking systems further enhance safety. The former two can be disabled to explore handling limits without electronic traction aids. Bentley heralds the Continental GT as a modern evolution of classic Bentley coupes. But the overall shape of the car is distinctly un-Bentley, lacking the long hood and elegant rear end of older models. The compact W12 engine is the culprit: past Bentleys required long hoods and engine compartments to accommodate their big V8 and V12 engines.

With supercar performance and handling, limousine-like luxury and four roomy seats, the Continental GT is a wellrounded alternative to similarly priced hard-core exotic sports cars from Aston Martin, Ferrari and Maserati. Its standard six-speed Tiptronic automatic is convenient and can be shifted manually using paddles behind the steering wheel or the gearshift lever between the front seats. The interior is sumptuous and impeccably crafted, with buttery leather, rich wood and polished aluminum trim. The symmetric dashboard mimics Bentley’s
winged logo and blends classic and modern style. Two front airbags, as well as side and standard side-curtain airbags for all occupants. Ninety percent of all Bentleys are customized beyond the staggering standard list of interior trim and exterior paint choices, with the company’s Mulliner division able to satisfy virtually any whim. If you want to test drive this car yourself, you can actually rent this exquisite automobile at dfwEliteAutoRental.com. I highly recommend it! —G. B. Martin

Design
featuring David Call
David Call Pure: What is your creative process for developing the best interior designs for your clients? David: There are always a number of key questions that I ask clients before starting to set the stage for what their design will be. My clients want the desgin to reflect them I always believe in and want my "new clients" know this is key. Most of my clients are by referral so they know that they will receive an inspired design for living. Since many of them have traveled I always inquire about their favorite places, what they have collected, this inspires what special items we can use in the new design. Whether it is a second home, vacation, High Rise Living or for a Family. All of these details play a distinct role as I am creating the design of their home in my mind, just waiting to bring it to life. Hotels or Spas they have visited are a key as well, so I can include reminders of these locations in their own Home. During the interview process, I listen a great deal. This helps me to organize and create while they are telling me some of the details, or overall general appearance and feeling they want to have. I give them my vision for their place including architectural details, material ideas and with all the information I have learned from them tie into their travels, lifestyle choice and personality, including their personal needs. Pure: Do you design both residential and commercial properties? David: Absolutely. My primary work of is Residential. But, I have so enjoyed to be involved with projects ranging from Call Centers with Executive Offices, a Wine & Spirits Shop designed for primarily for Female Clientele, & a Mild Face-lift of a Mexican Restaurant with a Hot Menu. In Residential, I have been privileged to have a strong client 64 pure
following which allow me to create rich livable interiors in the European Taste. While also being about to flex a little and enjoy the cleanliness of Modern Interiors in High Rise Living or a Private Home of a Client who wanted to live in a family surrounding but with Art Deco Interiors and Custom Furniture Designed by Me. Pure: Tell me about one of your design jobs that you are most proud of? David: With each project having its own level of complication and detail, it is very difficult to choose one that encompassed challenge with creative openness. The project which please me most is that of a Private Home, where we went from the Traditional Flowers & Ruffles of the previous owner to a complete reface of every surface to create a Sleek, Modern and Livable Family Environment. He has a family, and that takes style combided with durability. Not a single surface was left original and great thought to every detail was allowed and embraced. This client allowed me to use complete creative license with his home, and it shows. I was able to create several custom furniture pieces which I enjoy greatly and which allows me to provide the perfect item that I visualize coupled with his trust of my work. We combined many new products to the Contemporary market, along with exotic natural materials to embrace the Luxe feel of the home. One request was to try to create a music room. I did just that buy using a Dining Room, which they really did not need, and using its unusual location to make a stunning entrance into the home. The breakfast area was large enough to use a terrific rouge colored glass table which extends when needed. Practical Use and Artful Design, combined. That is certainly the combination that many people are looking for, even in the more lavish environments. Pure: I understand that you design your own custom furniture for your clients. David: I think that every designer truly enjoys being able to use creative license to make the perfect items for their clients.
Design
featuring David Call
I get a terrific energy creating what I know is right. Where each artist is different, it is in their own interpretation. That is why we have so many terrific custom designs in so many homes. I inspire in the near future to have a small furniture line of my own, utilizing some interpretations of items I have done before, but the aesthetic of the piece is what makes it a good design. I do not want to become a big manufacturer, just a more specialized collection of strong designs that really make a difference in your room. The best part of designing your own piece for me, is that you have the opportunity to be in charge of every detail, to make sure that all the decisions are deliberate, not just acceptable. Pure: Who is one of your favorite furniture designers? David: That would have to be CharlesEdouard Jeanneret & his Cousin Pierre Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier. The simple significance of their architecture, use of material and form are remarkable. Pure: What would you consider to be your favorite design style and why? David: My preference certainly leans to the more modern. Although, I do love the influence of an antique European painting to offset the coolness commonly felt with a modern room. It's all in the details. When doing modern interiors it is always a great challenge
that you must keep them more edited. This careful balance is why I love to have the challenge.. Pure: What are some places around Dallas, residential or commercial, that you would consider to have great interior design? David: In Dallas, the best options for good design are in our high rises and restaurants. I would have to say that Cirque certainly is a good choice. Also, the Screen Door Restaurant. Two completely different design concepts, but both well done. Residential, would have to be Dr. Jaime Vasquez home. Done with the epitome of taste. — G.B. Martin 66 pure

the NYLO Hotel A true departure, a destination for business travelers where high style and affordability are given equal attention. Where productivity is held in perfect balance with relaxation. NYLO Hotels are the culmination of a pro-active and comprehensive project undertaken by its executive management team, Michael Mueller, Stephane Dupoux, John Russell, Chris Jones, Patrick O’Neil and David Klein. The project’s objective, according to Michael, who left a top position at one of the world’s largest hotel companies to pursue, was: “to develop a new category of hotels that would offer the best elements of design, amenities and service found in the leading boutique hotels in the world’s major gateway cities. At the same time, the brand would feature an efficient, economical, new-build lifestyle
hotel prototype suitable for development on a mass market basis in suburban, secondary and tertiary markets.” The NYLO Hotel's groundbreaking design is the brainchild of Stephane Dupoux, designer of high-end restaurants and nightclubs. Recognized by Hospitality Design as one of America’s Top 20 architects-designers, Dupoux has created award-winning nightspots from London to Warsaw, New York to Miami’s South Beach. His design for NYLO aims to make business travel much easier and more enjoyable. The NYLO Hotel is an eclectic mix of upscale hotel, state-of-theart business center and premier gathering spot, bringing the life of the city directly to travelers. Each hotel features a striking brick-and-glass construction with concrete wings that create the appearance of a multibuilding streetscape. martini park Martini Park is an unprecedented combination of warm hospitality, highly-acclaimed cuisine, signature martinis and cocktails, and world-class design. Featuring live contemporary music nightly, this cutting edge concept combines a vibrant atmosphere with warm and friendly service to provide an unforgettable restaurant and entertainment experience. Martini Park was conceived when its creator and founder, entrepreneur Chris Barish, realized a void in the dining/ entertainment sector for people in their 30’s and older, who enjoy an evening out without the traditional nightclub velvet rope scene. What developed was a femalefriendly, upscale, fun dining and lounge destination for locals and business travelers alike. For those looking to dine in a social setting, look no further. Martini Park accommodates a full lunch and dinner
menu, with features such as Kobe Beef Sliders, Surf n’ Turf Nachos, and Grilled BBQ Salmon. For the Love of the Grape You may be anticipating spending some time with the one you love and a bottle of wine, or maybe with just a bottle of wine that you love, whichever works for you. Either way, wine always makes a good addition to food, love and life. Here are a few ideas for the next time you catch yourself in the wine store wondering what to sip on. Toad Hollow Vineyards “Risqué” is a delightful little sparkling wine which is imported from Limoux in Southern France. It’s a medium sweet wine with a soft restrained bouquet of fresh cut pears and granny smith apples. On the palate, “Risqué” delights the senses with a playful effervescence and follows through with flavors of honey and apple. This wine has a long lingering finish that really adds to its appeal. “Risqué” could be used as an aperitif, but would also be well-suited to after dinner. It’s perfect on its own or with some fresh cut strawberries and homemade whipped cream. Another nice wine is Folie a Deux “Ménage a Trois” 2002. “Folie a Deux” is a French term meaning “shared fantasies.” The “Ménage a Trois” is a melange of three strange bedfellows, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This wine has a brilliant red garnet color and an aroma of sweet currant jelly touched with hints
of allspice. Staying true to its nose, the wine explodes on the palate with ripe blackberries flavors from the Zinfandel component of this trio. The Merlot rounds out the mix by adding body to the mouth feel, while the Cabernet Franc lends just a bit of backbone. This is a fun and easy drinker that compliments most meat dishes. A few examples are New York strip, smoked brisket, or grilled pork chops. Swanson “Alexis” 2001’s vintner Clarke Swanson adores his daughter Alexis so much that when she decided to marry, he made a wine from his best vineyards for her wedding day. Thus “Alexis” was born, and it has been drinking great ever since. The wine is a proprietary blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah all from the Schmidt Ranch vineyard in Oakville. Located in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, the vineyards at Schmidt Ranch produce ripe concentrated fruit. The color of this wine is a rich pomegranate, and the nose is full of bright cherry and spicy terrior. “Alexis” submerges the palate in thick flavors of Bing cherry and vanilla evened out by smooth yet pronounced tannins. The wine has an excellent balance of fruit and acid along with a finish that seems to mosey

on forever. This wine will stand on its own nicely, or pair it with a variety of dishes that may include lamb, beef, venison and chocolate. These are but a few examples in a sea of thousands. Don’t be afraid to try one, and on this day may your heart remember this toast, “It’s not what you drink, it’s who you drink it with.”

Rafains At Rafain, it's $36.95 for everything except the dessert bar; for that, add $6.95. Besides several kinds of flan, passion fruit mousse, pies, and cakes, Rafain's dessert sampler includes some truly unusual offerings.
Start by pushing the palate envelope with a bite of candied asparagus. With a sweet grassy flavor, segments of asparagus have a reedy texture and were, for me, the most challenging of the candied offerings. More familiar watermelon rind, a classic in the American South, as well as candied chunks of pumpkin and tomato, fell somewhere in between the esoterica of asparagus and the easy familiarity of wine-soaked pears and chunks of pineapple bathed in clear sugar syrup.

Here's how churrascaria works: First cruise the salad bar that may include a wide variety of cheeses, as well as salad greens, slaws, hearts of palm and marinated vegetables. At Rafain, there's also a hot buffet with dishes such as beef stroganoff and baked fish. The "rodizio disk" on the table looks like a coaster at each place setting. When you expose the green or "go" side — servers begin the 16-meat parade. They bring meats hot off the grill on long skewers and carve them at the table. They keep coming until you flip your disk to the red side. The juicy meats are served without sauces. You'll be able to taste pork ribs, pork loin, flank steak, lamb chops, sausage, alcatra (top sirloin), filet mignon and traditional picanha (thin-sliced rump or tri-tip roast). Oh, yeah, there are chicken legs and breasts, too. Sides of creamy mashed potatoes and fried bananas are served, as well. Rafain offers an alternative to the cow-palace experience by going even meatier. With a cocktail lounge separated from the dining room by the salad and dessert bars, the low-lit, dark-wood interior has the look and feel of an upscale steak buffeteria. pure

restaurateur interview
Ana Saldana
Proud owner of The Filling Station Being the publisher of an entertainment magazine, I get to meet many innovative and successful people. One such person is Ana Saldana, owner of The Filling Station. Pure: Tell us what your truly passionate about in life. Ana: From early on I have had a love for music. My father, Sal Saldana, played castillian guitar and sang. He used to perform in Jack Ruby's club. Pure: I hear that sometimes you sing with the bands." Ana: The bands and customers ask me to sing, that is how that got started. Pure: What made you decide to breathe new life back into The Filling Station? Ana: I was a frequent customer beginning at the age of seventeen. I would take my friends, drink Tune Ups, eat Gasket Platters and have a blast. One girlfriend of mine remembers
me telling her that I was going to own The Filling Station someday. Maybe I had too many Tune Ups but it came true. In March 2007, I was cleaning out a drawer in my room and found a mint condition Filling Station matchbox. I showed the matchbox to a friend of mine who was bored with his restaurant job. I told him that the only restaurant I would re-open is The Filling Station because I missed the food and drinks so much. Pure: What do you enjoy the most about running the Filling Station? Ana: I do not run The Filling Station. I just go there to have a good time and enjoy the food and drinks. The customers are great. We have live entertainment four nights a week. Which allows me to enjoy my true passion, music. —G.B. Martin 88 pure

Personal Growth
Living Your True Life With Ashley Berges
Personal growth is something that must take place daily in order for us to live a successful life. Like anything else, when we are not moving forward, we are stagnating or reversing and that isn’t a powerful or positive situation in our lives. It’s similar to the person stuck in a dead-end job, unhappily going to work each day and perpetually feeling miserable, bored, frustrated, and angry at both the job and in their life. The same is true if we live a dead-end life. If we are continually bored and frustrated, our lives are never going to be fruitful and complete. We will always be longing
for something we think we want instead of growing and pursuing the life we deserve and desire. Personal enlightenment is critical because when we are enlightened we are able to clearly see why we do the things we do and what we are trying to gain. Personal enlightenment can be the most challenging of all because it requires that we look within ourselves, evaluating how we think and feel, and why we act the way we act. When we go within we are able to see those same mistakes we make, and why we play the same losing card time after time?
96 pure
This is the critical transformation because once you achieve personal enlightenment you will be on a path to lasting satisfaction. Personal enlightenment allows us to take a step back and honestly contemplate our actions. We understand why we do what we do and can honestly look at our life options with complete clarity and understanding. It allows us to calmly observe ourselves without making judgments, understanding whom we truly are, and realizing what we need to do (or not do) in order to make our lives better. Personal enlightenment is important because it allows you to be you, to build yourself up on solid ground, and eliminate self-sabotaging routines and behaviors. Personal clarity is important because it puts the finishing touches on the true picture of your life that has been created by personal growth and enlightenment. When we are living life right by others and ourselves we have the proper clarity to act and live true. With clarity, we see things for what they truly are and we allow them to be. Clarity is seeing one’s self truly: the greatness and the faults. Because no one is perfect, clarity allows us to see ourselves for who we are without a mask or cover-up. Clarity has arrived when we truly realize whom we are and what we need to do to better our lives and better the world around us.
Your Time and Energy are Important! We all have trouble standing up for ourselves sometimes. We’ve all agreed to do things we don’t want to do, and we’ve all tolerated things we didn’t want to tolerate. For the most part, we do these things because we don’t want to deal with conflict and we want everyone to like us. Unfortunately, without proper boundaries in a relationship, conflict will generally ensue, at some point, and it may be harder to repair the damage that has been done. When we start a new relationship with boundaries, we allow it to grow in a healthy and mature manner that provides equally for all involved. A boundary, in this context, is the emotional and or physical space between you and another person. In order to stop the cycle of unhappy and unhealthy living, we must learn how to set boundaries. Because the purpose of a boundary is to protect and take care of ourselves, we must be able to set boundaries and further more, stick with our boundaries. We have the right to protect and defend ourselves when someone is acting in a way or doing something that is not acceptable. We have to take personal responsibility for how others treat us. When others are not treating us appropriately, we have the right and obligation to change the situation. Things You Should Give Up To Get Love With Deanna Frazier Attraction Expert
Many times when people want to attract their ideal partner, they often make a list of things to do -- action steps, if you will -- that will help them meet "the one." They add new activities into their routine, join dating services, write singles ads. They may start an exercise program or buy new clothes in an effort to look better. They let their friends know they're "in the market." Seldom do people think of giving up something as a way to attract Mr. or Ms. Right. Well, this is not entirely true. People may give up such things as smoking or overeating. But the kind of "giving-up" I'm referring to is about your beliefs, attitudes and feelings. Giving up something in one of these three areas is more likely to lead you to your Mr. or Ms. Right. Here is a list of things you should consider giving up if you want to attract your Mr. or Ms. Right (there are obviously many more things)
Give up anger at the opposite sex. Give up on your past relationships. . Give up trying to be perfect in order to attract a mate. Give up protecting yourself from hurt. Give up need to be in control. Give up needing to be “right. Give up looking for a relationship. Fore more information contact www.DeannaFrazier.com Dee@DeannaFrazier.com 972.248.9084
