FASHION & BEAUTY
Makeover feature
STYLELABB Salon Pure Magazine’s makeover winner this month is Kyndal Barbay, a 21year old student looking to lighten up her look. Kyndal is newly single and looking for a brand-new job as well. She wants a look to call her own – one that gets her noticed! We took Kyndal over to our friends at the edgy rock-n-roll-styled StyleLabb in their new downtown location, where owner Cruz put his core crew of junior stylists Before to work on her transformation. Marcos Venegas, Chris Bermudez and Marie Diaz descended upon Kyndall with swift exuberance as they first bleached the mousy brown out of her locks, then added several shades of beautiful blonde to create a healthy head of multi-dimensional sunny highlights. Next, Vidal Sassoon trained Cruz deftly cut her shoulder length hair into a sharp-edged swing bob reminiscent of the now famous Sassoon asymmetrical cut of the 60’s. The overall result? A medium-blond kicky bob with platinum highlights that brings out Kyndal’s natural radiance while accentuating her lovely bone structure and wide hazel eyes.
To further enhance Kyndal’s natural beauty and add some grown-up drama, MAC makeup artist Marie Diaz worked her magic by dusting on bronzer to her medium-toned skin. Marie also brushed on dark plum and charcoal shadows to create a smoky eye – a dynamic compliment to Kyndal’s golden brown hazel eyes. She then whisked on plum blush and dotted on golden pink lip gloss to complete her new look. If you’d like a look like Kyndal’s, or just one that gets you noticed, contact Cruz at StyleLabb. Not only can you get supercool hair and makeup to brighten up your look, but you can also shop Style Labb’s edgy boutique for clothes that say “I’m with the band!” StyleLabb is located at 300 North Akard St, Suite 810. artist interview
The Art of J.D. Miller The Samuel Lynne Galleries is home to an impressive stable of artists, among them part-owner J.D. Miller. The gallery was conceived when long-time Dallas artist and musician Miller was introduced to notable restaurateur Philip Romano at Romano’s celebrated hot spot Nick & Sam’s. The two formed a fast friendship which would soon become a partnership - Samuel (Romano’s son’s name) Jaime Lynne (Miller’s daugh-
ter’s name) Galleries - when Miller discovered that Romano shared his love for art and had been painting as a hobby for 30 years. Miller agreed to mentor Romano in painting while Romano provided his acumen in the business side of the partnership. The result is a spacious 11,000 square-foot Dragon Street showroom replete with a movie theater, bar and red carpet for monthly A-list art openings. 28 pure
J.D. Miller knew at the tender age of 4 that he would be in the arts. His first love was music; he’s been a professional musician for over 20 years. He started painting 15 years ago when his then-wife, an artist, handed him her paintbrush and told him to “go for it.” Miller recounts picking up a tube of French Ultramarine Blue and seeing “the heavens open up while the angels were singing.” He had found his calling. His first few months were incredibly prolific as he turned out in excess of 50 paintings a month. He studied under the tutelage of the late Liz Richardson, who taught him the basics of color and composition, as well as learning about the work of the masters. Not surprisingly, his influences are mostly the impressionists - Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso - and more unexpectedly - Walt Disney. Miller’s 3-D colorful impressionist oil painting style has remained constant throughout his years of painting with the exception of Polo Player, a recent more figurative, post-modern work. When asked if he may be taking his style in that direction, Miller states that he works “on multiple channels, like a river. Once I find a style I’ll continue in it for the rest of my life - new developments are like tributaries of that river.” Miller paints not only for himself, but also for his viewers. He wants to bring pure
awareness to the energy each one of us creates. His creative process is mostly carried out in a realm of higher vibrations and positivity, and he wants his viewers to realize that energy and return it. He calls this concept his “Reflectionist Theory” - a movement he founded with one of his music partners. It began as an experiment...they wanted to see what would happen if they put out nothing but good energy into the universe and then recorded what came back - in the forms of visual art, music and dance. He says his Reflectionist Theory is akin to the “Law of Attraction” or “You Reap What You Sow”, in others words, what you put out is what you get back. When asked who he would trade places with for a day if he Polo Player could, a soft-spoken unassuming Miller says at first, “Honestly I don’t know if I would”, but then thoughtfully adds, “Leonardo DaVinci...I’d like to see what was in his head!” On that note, he also includes DaVinci on the guest list of his dream dinner party, among other notables such as Jesus, Buddha, Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe. J.D. Miller, Philip Romano and other artists’ works are on display at the Samuel Lynne Galleries at 1105 Dragon Street. You can also visit their website at www.SamuelLynne.com. – Andrea Reich

Band REview
The Shock of Pleasure Call it fate, call it coincidence or simply call it luck, but something powerful occurred over the course of three short months in 2004 when veteran musician and songwriter Robert Romano met singer Kelley Christian and producer David Castell. Romano, formerly of Stranger Than Fiction, was on the verge of quitting the music industry altogether after 15 years when he was introduced to Christian, a classically-trained singer and wellknown model, who seemed like the perfect person to front the new project he’d formed with long-time collaborator Brent Irish. An encoun-
ter with Castell, acclaimed for his work with Blue October and Burden Brothers, cemented his desire to leap back into the musical fray. Taking cues from intelligent, downtempo electronic acts like Thievery Corporation and Portishead, Romano set to penning the compelling, layered tracks that now form Shock of Pleasure’s debut album It’s About Time. “We were simply trying to create something that we would listen to,” Romano explains. “I knew this was the direction to go in, it just felt right. We knew it had to stand alone in the super-saturated music world, 46 pure
something clean, even optimistic. We wanted the record to be very electronic, even slick – without losing the spirit of the original compositions.” Once the aim was clear and Josh Curry was added on bass at the end of 2005, the group went into Castell’s Dallas studio where the producer fit in their recording sessions between his other acts over the course of nearly two years. In the studio, the compositions of the songs, which Romano initially conceives with just a guitar and the mindset of a studied architect who arranges sound in a similar manner one would arrange space, were refined, melding delicately grooving beats, sparse melodies and Christian’s ethereal vocals. Songs like “This Is a Test,” the disc’s first single when it was initially self-released in September of 2007, and “Cruel and Unusual” dance quietly through dynamic, undeniably lovely sonic landscapes that reveal Romano’s role as a “student of music” and his practiced skill of the craft. The album, which will was nationally with two additional tracks (chilledout covers of the Carpenters hit “Superstar” and the Dennis Yost classic “Spooky”) on September 16th 2008, has received nothing but praise, accruing the band an intimidating list of accomplishments that include the No. 12 spot on the CMJ music charts in February 2008, appearances on nationally syndicated radio shows like The Lex and Terry Show, play on the ABC Family Channel show Wildfire,
dance remixes of the songs in clubs across the country, and regular rotation on dozens of radio stations. The real Shock of Pleasure is the music: strikingly original and fresh. “Our only objective is making music that’s unique and inspired,” Romano says. “Everyone knows music transcends words and images, we just think it’s cool to be a part of the emotional magic that happens.” – G. B. Martin Robert Romano- guitar, keyboards, vocals Brent Irish- drums, percussion Kelley Christian- the voice Josh Curry- bass

Deux Lounge N ew Y ork C hic M eets V egas S izzle
The landscape of high-end nightlife in Dallas shifts with the Opening of the ultra-exclusive Deux at Mockingbird Station. A sophisticated multi-use facility that combines the luxurious ambiance of New York with the energetic vibe of Las Vegas, Deux offers a unique social setting unlike anything else in the Metroplex. Adding to its aura of exclusivity, the Deux Lounge is open only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10PM to 2AM, plus Happy Hour every Friday from 4 to 9PM.
Deux doubles as a special event venue offering 6,000 square feet of elegantly appointed space for groups up to 450 people. An in-house chef and full catering service are available for corporate events, weddings, receptions and other large gatherings. Unlike most hotel ballrooms, no additional décor is necessary, though the space may be augmented to suit virtually any use. “We conceived Deux to be a one-ofa-kind lounge that draws its inspiration from some of the top venues across the

country, while still maintaining a distinctly Dallas pulse,” said John Mabry, of Deux, and a 30 year hospitality industry veteran. “We’ve been very pleased by the response to our Grand Opening Party.” Mabry’s vision — “Evening Luxury Defined” — positions Deux in an exclusive niche among Dallas night spots. Catering to a young, professional clientele, Deux offers ample free parking as well as convenient valet services, a concierge, a VIP service manager and other upscale amenities. Deux’s signature design elements include graceful marble water walls, ornate crystal chandeliers, polished marble bars, hand-finished hardwood floors and comfortable, overstuffed sofas and chairs. Deux is located at 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane, Suite 240 in Dallas. Because space is limited, patrons are advised to call ahead (214.502.1982) to reserve a table or to put their names on the guest list. No cover. Appropriate attire is required. Pairing Wine With Food... Why Wouldn’t You, Wine Is Food
Chef Kyle Curd, sous-chef for the renowned Wolfgang Puck at the FiveSixty and owner of Culinary Creations, and his father David Curd, President of SoundStage Systems, discuss some of their favorite wines under $15 dollars. Beginnings The traditional use for sparkling wines as “special occasion” is important, but much more appealing is their contribution Kyle Curd to the beginning of any mealtime. These wines pair with almost everything. Whether with appetizers, spicy Thai or silky French, they carry themselves with style. Favorites: Domain Chandon Blanc de Noir and Domaine ste Michelle Brut. We'll continue on with exciting new white wine favorites from Argentina, Torrontes. These wines deliver intense fruit flavor and floral fragrances. Favorites: Bianchi and Alamos. Next, tack your sailboat to a surprisingly peppery finish from Wolfgang Concerto Gruner Veltliner from Austria. Sail on into smooth waters with
Columbia Crest Grand Estates Chardonnay and pair with grilled seafood offerings. Try Oak Leaf Chardonnay for a bargain basement delight.
David Curd
Homegrown favorite Viognier by Becker Vineyards (Texas) delivers flavor and mouth feel that exceeds much more expensive wines. Sauvignon Blanc, light and crisply acidic, pairs nicely with ceviche and as an aperitif. Favorites: Kim Crawford and Villa Maria (New Zealand). Have you heard of Resveratrol, the heart-healthy antioxidant compound found in wines containing red grapes? Backyard-worthy and capable of indoor elegance, these wines provide rewarding accompaniment. 68 pure
Pinot Noir, Mark West Vineyards is a highly polished winner from California that enhances grilled or BBQ chicken and grilled Tuna. Malbec, a worthy choice versus Merlot, would suit any Argentine gaucho with his grilled rib eye coupled with Chimichurri sauce. Favorites: Pascual Taso and Alamos are values. Petite Sirah, a great foil with chicken stuffed chiles rellenos, grilled burgers or ancho glazed salmon, is an offspring of Syrah. Concannon makes one of our favorites. We sometimes reduce half of a bottle of Zinfandel for a sauce base and drink the other two glasses while we're supposed to be grilling great pieces of meat and vegetables. We love serving big Zins. Cline Ancient Vines and Segessio Family Zinfandel are taste and budgetfriendly. These wines will encourage you to splurge on a bigger budget Zinfandel from Ridge Lytton Springs, definitely over the $15 range of the previous wines. We’ll come back and talk about some more wine pairings and fun foods to share them with soon. Make sure and send us an email if you would like to be invited to our wine dinners and tastings. Bailey's Prime Plus Bailey’s Prime Plus is the newest addition to the Ed Bailey Empire, which includes the popular Patrizio’s Italian restaurants. Located in the back of the new mixed-use Park Lane development across from Northpark Mall, this massive 12,000-square-foot steakhouse is just what Uptown needs. As the second installment in the Bailey’s Prime Plus steakhouses, this place is the next big thing. I have traveled the globe to hand-select our wines and visited at least half of the wineries personally. The wine selection isn’t the only thing to be proud of. the mouth-watering signature appetizer — Lobster-Stuffed Avocado. This delightful dish is two avocado halves filled with lobster meat and a blend of four cheeses. Cooked just until the inside is hot and melted, it is served on a bed of cilantrolime cream sauce, accented with a red chili pesto, and garnished with a two-color baby heirloom tomato Pico de Gallo. A truly unique and flavorful dish. Bailey’s Prime Plus features a variety of main courses from Lemon Sole prepared with a Maine Lobster Butter Sauce and Pan-Roasted Chicken to a 34 oz. All steaks are offered with a range of preparation styles including peppercorn encrusted and “Lobster Oscar Style” (topped with Lobster meat and béarnaise sauce) garnished with a roman cheese encrusted crispy asparagus. Mercedes GLK350 It's been a long wait, but we've finally driven Mercedes' new junior off-roader, the GLK. And we can confidently say Stuttgart’s latest offering is an off-roader because Pure has been mud-plugging in the GLK - and beating its big brother M-class driven by Mercedes’ own instructors. The all-new 2010 GLK350 is Mercedes-Benz's first foray into the small SUV market. The GLK is designed to be hip, unique, and affordable, at least by Mercedes
standards. With a starting price of $34,775 (including destination), the GLK350 undercuts Mercedes' nextsmallest SUV, the ML350, by over $13,000, and its chief rival, the BMW X3, by $5,000. But is the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 an SUV you'd

actually want to buy? Let's drive and find out. EPA fuel economy estimates 16 mpg city, 21 - 22 mpg highway, warranty 4 years/50,000 miles. The interior is slightly more subtle than the exterior. A lot of the parts are lifted from the C-class, so the ergonomics are fundamentally sound. And there are improvements over the Cclass too, such as the door-mounted seat controls. Much more intuitive. The (optional) multi-media Comand screen now sits integrated into the top of the dashboard, unlike the C-class’s pop-outand-up item. Space and practicality nearly match the M-class,
but unfortunately the GLK is let down by materials that aren’t deserving of this class. Right, the GLK's an off-roader but I don’t care about plugging mud. So, what’s it like cruising around town? Pretty darn good. The biggest surprise is the ride comfort, which is soft and cosseting, despite the GLK having impeccable body control. Thank Mercedes’ Agility Control system (think fancy shock absorbers) which know when to smooth and soothe, and when to tighten and firm. Combine the clever shocks with decent mechanical grip, the 4Matic’s four-wheel drive traction and 45:55 rear-bias, and the GLK is surprisingly entertaining to drive. If you would like to take a GLK for a test spin, I recommend Park Place Mercedes on Lemmon Ave. That's where I got my CLK. —G.B. Martin

Living Your True Life With Ashley Berges
Do You have a Time Machine? Turning back the clock is impossible. Unfortunately, many of us don’t live our lives with that in mind. We tend to live our lives with disregard to certain things – a lack of thoughtfulness and a failure to follow through for others and for ourselves. When we fail to follow through for others, we have a tendency to lose friends, make enemies, or just fall out of favor. Sometimes, we get labeled the "hack", the "ditz", and the "talker" that no one listens to anymore. When we keep making promises and never deliver, we create problems in our lives. When we fail to follow through with promises to ourselves, we create stagnation and despair.
If we keep promising ourselves that we will enroll in a class, take a trip, or take better care of ourselves and we never follow through, we eventually lose the drive to better ourselves. In the recent film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, two children by the names of Harry Potter and Hermione Granger have the option to - with magic - go back in time with a "time-turner" and save two lives and change the course of history. In the movie, they successfully go back in time and accomplish what needed to be done. All of us at one time or another would love to turn back the hands of time and re-do something we didn’t do well or failed to do. Unfortunately, that 100 pure
would be a "do-over", and in life, there are no real do-overs. Because we don’t have a time-turner to go back in time and better our wrongdoings and missed chances, we must be mindful participants in life right now. Being a mindful active participant in life means that on a daily basis we must focus on our dreams, pursuits, aspirations, the making of a difference, the striving to love in a more unconditional way, the choice to love instead of fear, not to dwell in the "thinking mind", not to place expectations on everything and everyone, and to live in the present moment and be an active participant, not a spectator. How to live without the need for time travel: • Focus on your dreams, pursuits and aspirations. • Make a difference. • Choose love over fear. • Love unconditionally. • Stop living in the "thinking mind". To stop living in the thinking mind, we must begin by refusing to place expectations on everything and everyone, so we can begin to live in the present moment, and we become a life participant not a spectator. When we spend our time in the thinking mind, we spend less time in the present moment. You can’t be two places at once, so what’s more important? The present moment is most important because that’s what's taking place now. We’ve all been somewhere where all we could think about is something that took place earlier. When we go back into the thinking mind and remove ourselves from pure
the moment, we're removing ourselves from life. When we're actively participating and focusing on the moment at hand, we're making the most of it. We don’t need a time turner when we use our time wisely with meaning and conviction. Next time you catch yourself not being present in the moment, remember that you don’t have a time turner and can’t bring back the time you have lost. Instead of dwelling on lost time, re-focus on the moment, be mindful, and jump back into life instead of letting it pass you by. When we live in the thinking mind, we might as well go home, take no phone calls, and cut ourselves off from society because we aren’t participating in life. The thinking mind puts up barriers between yourself and others and the present moment can’t penetrate it without you stepping in, recognizing the thinking mind, letting those thoughts go, and then getting back into the moment you’ve been given. Personal Reflection When was the last time you caught yourself not in the moment? What were you thinking about? At what point did you begin to recognize the thinking mind? Were you out with friends? Driving your car? At work? Have you caught yourself placing expectations on people or situations? What were the expectations? What were the outcomes?
