When Dan Averill opened his first real estate office in 1972—in a former Bigfork homesteader cabin that had also been the town’s onetime post office—he couldn’t have known that his one-man company would one day grow to include 18 offices with more than 240 sales associates, forming Montana’s number one brokerage in 2021 with over $2.2 billion in total sales volume. As PureWest celebrates its 50th anniversary, we remain devoted to the company’s original aims of building relationships for life. Just as home is more than a house, we know that real estate is more than a transaction. It’s a relationship focused on people and places, knowledge and trust. We are excited to announce the realization of our vision for a statewide real estate network with our expansion into the Billings and Red Lodge markets, and remain committed to setting the standard for Montana real estate as we move boldly into the future.

heartfelt (“Ugly”).

Q A

When her breakout song “Drinking With Dolly” was

released, she got a letter of appreciation from the country music icon herself, typed on pink paper. Pure Montana sat down with Bozeman-born singer/ songwriter Stephanie Quayle to hear about her journey from the farm off of McIllhattan Road to the bright lights of Nashville, and why Montana will always be her home.

Let’s start at the beginning. What was it like to grow up in Bozeman? SQ: My parents split up when I was young, so I’d ride my bike when I was in town with my dad and ride my horse on the farm when I was with my mom. It was just so simple! I look at it now and it’s grown so much, but in a lot of 10

good ways, especially access to live music. I think one of the first country concerts I saw was at the Wilson, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, but we just didn’t have the access like we do now. It’s been crazy to see how many of my friends in the industry are performing in my hometown. Growing up, it was always like, “Yeah, that tour’s not

coming here.” To watch the live music scene explode throughout the state, and to watch my music friends experience what I’ve gotten to live, that’s really cool. So how did you get into performing? SQ: I actually did an exchange program my junior year of high

&

school in Fribourg, Switzerland. There was a band over there that I got to audition for; that was the first band I ever fronted, wrote for, and played for. That was the beginning of me as an artist. When I came back, I was just on fire for music and played every place I could play in Bozeman, from the Cat’s Paw to the Filling Station, to when there used to be Looie’s Down Under on Main Street.

PHOTO CREDITS: RACHEL DEEB (TOP) ERIKA ROCK (BOTTOM

Did you play exclusively country music? SQ: I played all genres because I just wanted to perform. Outside of being on the back of a horse, where

I feel most comfortable, the stage became that place where I was like, “Oh, I make sense here, I like this! I don’t feel like a fish out of water.” Music is such a force of nature, and it’s a universal language. Now I can go anywhere in the world, and if there’s other musicians playing and a guitar—or a piano, but the guitar is more portable!—we can have that camaraderie instantly through music. For me it’s like breathing. There’s no choice when it comes to music. How did growing up in Montana shape you as an artist? SQ: I think about that often. It’s influenced my life in so many ways, from my entrepreneurial father to—on my mom’s side—growing up on a farm that never sleeps. The musical spark was inside of me, going to Switzerland ignited that fire in my belly, and then I had the upbringing of learning that work ethic. That’s not something you’re born with. That’s learned behavior, seeing the results of hard work, the payoff. For me, it was, “You get to ride your horse when you’re done cleaning the chicken coop.” It was grounding. I know where I came from, I know who I am, and I know where I’m headed. If I need to put myself in check, I just jump on the back of my horse or go shovel some manure! And where is your home now? SQ: I have a place in Nashville and a farm in North Carolina, but when people ask, “Where is home for you?”, it’s always Montana. # 1 I N M O N TA N A

Wherever I go in the world, Montana will always be my heart and my home. My family is there. It’s where I fell in love with my husband; we got married at our home in Paradise Valley. I’m such an advocate for Montana and its way of life. If you’re moving to Montana from another place, really let Montana recalibrate you. Let it show you the way. Really appreciate it, and let’s take care of it so we have it for future generations. 12

P U R E M O N TA N A

What’s on your mind when you’re on your way back to Bozeman? SQ: Seeing my family. As soon as I know we’re a couple hundred miles out, I’ll lift my window shade—if I’m in the window seat—because I know the land. Mom’s up against the Bridgers and I’m thinking about how soon I’ll get to see her, and my dad and my stepmom, too. And I try to time my drive from Bozeman to Paradise Valley to hit it right before the sun is setting. Watching the Yellowstone on my left, knowing that

I’m headed toward the park, and then the sun and the clouds—it’s such a wonderful experience that I do everything in my power not to miss it. Can you tell us a little about your home here? SQ: Growing up in Montana, we spent more time outdoors than indoors. What our home has is the ability to experience the outdoors from all the different viewsheds— there are views out every single side of our house, so you don’t feel

“ Wherever I go in the world, Montana will always be my heart and my home.”

&

Q A like you’re losing the wildness of the outside when you’re inside. To be able to see those views, open the windows and hear the creek or the wind or the birds, to have that indoor-outdoor experience is everything. Even in the coldest of the cold, you’re still seeing the outdoors from the inside.

What personal touches make it feel homey? SQ: Photos of family. I’m also such a junkie for wool blankets and western design; I’m a big proponent of feeling warm and welcoming. Our living room has a bison hide rug that my stepfather gave my husband as a wedding present, from the bison herd that my mom used to have. If I’m getting writer’s block, if I’m stuck, I go home to Montana, I jump on my horse, I build a fire and I sit in front of that fire on our bison hide. I sit there and it comes to me, and I just get that clarity. It’s my favorite place in the whole world!

Nate Chute Foundation The Nate Chute Foundation works to reduce suicide in western Montana. Founded after the suicide death of 18-year-old Nate Chute of Whitefish in 1999, the foundation offers education, outreach, and training to schools and organizations to help them identify suicidal behavior and build resiliency among their students and community. It also provides financial assistance for people at risk of suicide who are seeking professional counseling. PureWest participated in the 2021 Festival of Trees, which raised over $25,000 for the foundation, as well as the Flathead Valley Out of the Darkness walk, supporting the Montana chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Arlee Rehabilitation Center This new nonprofit is serving the Flathead Indian Reservation with its mission to provide a sanctuary where animals heal people and people heal animals. Their work began with 2021’s Pawsitively Healing Camp, helping at-risk kids build social and emotional resilience while they connected with dogs, horses, and raptors in a variety of guided activities. In addition to this program, the organization holds spay and neuter clinics and has a grassroots program called Paws on the Ground that offers intervention and support to low-income community members who are struggling to care for their pets. PureWest agents attended the nonprofit’s first annual gala and contributed to the silent auction. Big Sky Community Housing Trust Like many resort communities, affordable housing is a pressing issue in Big Sky. The Big Sky Community Housing Trust is actively working on solutions: since becoming an independent nonprofit in 2020, they have helped 174 local residents find homes to purchase or rent, incentivized 37 owners to use their properties as long term rentals, and sponsored a 52-unit affordable home development. Their innovative work is creating a model that other resort communities across the state can study and implement. PureWest helped facilitate the land sale for the affordable housing development. Big Sky Senior Services In Billings, Big Sky Senior Services helps older adults maintain their independence and quality of life; they believe that anyone who is able deserves the right to live in their home. The organization facilitates that goal by providing a wide variety of services that enable individuals to do so, regardless of their ability to pay. This includes help with personal care, household chores, pet care, transportation, companionship, nursing services, money management, caretaker support, and case management. 4 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT

GLACIER Glacier National Park has so many iconic features, from the panoramic vistas (and beauty of the Many Glacier Hotel and the peaks that rise above Swiftcurrent Lake. Here are a few more fun facts about the spectacular Crown of the Continent:

It’s a Land of Lakes Thanks to the ice ages of the past, Glacier is packed full of lakes and ponds: 762, to be precise. There are so many that only 131 of them have been named, of which Lake McDonald is the largest. At 9.4 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, it covers almost 7,000 acres. Interestingly, Glacier’s lakes are often either startlingly clear—thanks to year round cold temperatures that inhibit plankton growth—or an opaque, milky turquoise, due to the glaciers grinding the rocks and minerals of the lakebed to a fine powder as they receded. 16

don’t-look-down drop-offs) of the Going-to-the-Sun Road to the remote, rugged

It’s International

The protected lands of Glacier National Park continue across the Canadian border, where they become Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park. Since 1932, the entirety has officially been known as the WatertonGlacier International Peace Park, a World Heritage site and the world’s first international peace park. Rotarians from both countries successfully lobbied their respective governments to create the shared park and continue to meet each fall for a Hands Across the Border assembly, pledging to continue to pursue peace, liberty, and equal opportunity for all.

It’s the GOAT

Okay, Glacier might not have a factual claim as the Greatest Of All Time. But it does have a robust population of actual mountain goats. These fascinating woolly creatures can withstand temperatures as low as -50 degrees Fahrenheit and winds of 100 miles per hour in their high alpine habitat. The toe pads on their cloven hooves provide the grip of a natural climbing shoe and help them scramble up 60-degree slopes with ease. Mountain goats typically live 9 to 12 years in the wild, and the number of rings at the base of their horns indicates their age. But we wouldn’t recommend trying to count them yourself!

It’s a Blast on a Bus

All 33 of the iconic Red Buses chugging up and down the Goingto-the-Sun Road each summer date back to the 1930s and are considered the oldest touring fleet of vehicles anywhere in the world. They are sometimes mistakenly called “Jammers,” but that term actually refers to the drivers, who could be heard jamming the gears on the Sun Road in the days when the vehicles had manual transmissions. With their canvas roll-back tops, frames built of oak, not metal, and a color picked to match the ripe mountain ash berry, these “Rubies of the Rockies” are an excellent way to take in the sights, sounds, and fresh mountain air of a beautiful day in Glacier. 17

NORTHWEST MONTANA

The many historic communities of northwest Montana began with logging, mining, and the railroads. They are now growing into their 21st century economies, which are a blend of old and new: hauling 18

logs, but also health care, trains, but also technology. Eureka is the last outpost before the Canadian border, beautifully situated in the Tobacco Valley with a charming downtown and the Tobacco Valley Historical Village. Kalispell, in the middle of the Flathead Valley, is the county seat and economic center of the region. Whitefish, with its easy access to skiing, lakes and more, is the region’s resort town. Columbia Falls is coming into its own as the Gateway to Glacier, with a revitalized downtown generating new energy in the community. In between, the region’s communities and small towns continue to grow, while still retaining their true Montana character.

orthwest Montana encompasses everything from the Continental Divide—running down the Rocky Mountains through Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness—to the Idaho border, tucked along the Cabinet Mountains of the Kootenai National Forest. And there’s a lot in between those two mountain ranges: lakes almost beyond counting, flower-filled meadows, pineforested hills that plunge down to fast-flowing rivers. The variety of raw, rugged natural beauty in this region makes it a truly incredible place, as the people who call it home can attest.

A collaboration between KALICO Art Center and the nonprofit Rails to Trails, the Tunnel Vision mural project brings an unexpected burst of color and vitality to the utilitarian concrete underpasses. Initially a response to graffiti on the tunnel walls—for research shows that public art is much less likely to be vandalized than a blank wall—the murals have also become both a continual conversation piece and a unifying community project for Kalispell. The 4,000-square-foot contemporary rendering of the ferns of Glacier National Park, inside the tunnel next to Glacier High School, was designed and directed by a professional mural artist but painted by a wide variety of community volunteers in the fall of 2021. Plans are also in place to add murals to the underpass at the base of Lone Pine State Park, adding a splash of manmade color and creativity to the surrounding natural beauty.

WILD AND SCENIC THREE FORKS OF FUN ON THE FLATHEAD RIVER

T

he three forks of the Flathead River are a lot like siblings: recognizably similar, but each with their own distinctive personalities. The South Fork is remote and rugged, its upper section only reachable by plane or on foot with a pack string hauling your gear. The Middle Fork is action-packed fun, with guided raft trips gleefully hitting its Class II and III whitewater rapids all day long. The North Fork is somewhere in between: with gentler water and accessible via the bumpy North Fork Road, it also offers long stretches of solitude and postcard-worthy views of the Livingston Range. What unites these three stretches of water, besides their confluence north of Columbia Falls, is their protection under the federal Wild & Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. This forward-thinking legislation was enacted to protect the free-flowing American rivers that still possessed outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values. Only 388 miles of Montana’s 170,000 miles of river—less than one half of one percent—are designated as “wild and scenic.” Northwest Montana is incredibly lucky to have 219 of those 388 miles in our back yard, preserved for everyone to fish, float, camp, and enjoy their natural beauty. 21

WHITEFISH

O

nce a small logging outpost on the Great Northern Railway, Whitefish is now the epicenter of outdoor recreation and small town charm in northwest Montana. Nestled at the base of Big Mountain and against the shores of Whitefish Lake, Whitefish offers easy access to every type of alfresco fun imaginable, from golf to waterskiing to carving turns all winter long on Whitefish Mountain Resort’s 3,000 acres of skiable terrain. As an added bonus, the town is just 25 miles from the serene vistas and endless hiking trails of Glacier National Park. The allure doesn’t end with the natural beauty, however. There’s always something happening in downtown Whitefish, from the relaxed community fun of the Tuesday night farmers markets to the wide and wonderful variety of high-quality theater, dining,

and live entertainment. The Under the Big Sky music festival draws big names and 20,000 fans to the Big Mountain Ranch each summer, while local musicians keep the nights lively throughout the year at the bars and venues around town. Whether you’re looking to spend a day or a lifetime, it doesn’t take long to see why Travel + Leisure magazine calls Whitefish one of the Best Small Towns in America.

SUMMER FUN AT WHITEFISH MOUNTAIN RESORT

A

fter the chairlifts close and the last stashes of snow melt, a whole new kind of fun begins at Whitefish Mountain Resort. The mountain offers activities perfect for every age and adventure level, from three-year-olds rolling the beginner berms at the Strider Bike Park to serious downhill mountain bikers catching a chair to the summit for an adrenaline-fueled

descent on one of the 25 downhill bike trails. Visitors can also choose from soaring above the trees on a zip line tour or speeding through them on the alpine slide. Feeling brave? The aerial adventure park offers five different courses with obstacles from 10 to 50 feet off the ground, allowing you to test yourself as you traverse from tree to tree via rope ladder or swinging trapeze. Kids—or the kid in all of us—also love racing down the side-by-side summer tubing track. And don’t forget the simple joy of standing on the summit of Big Mountain. Ride a chair or enclosed gondola to the summit, or hike the 3.8 miles of the gorgeous, winding Danny On trail. The top of the mountain offers jaw-dropping vistas of Glacier National Park and the Canadian Rockies, along with a bird’s eye view of Whitefish Lake and the entire Flathead Valley. The mountain is as wonderful in July as it is in January.

WHITEFISH

A FESTIVAL OF FUN GOOD TIMES AT THE WHITEFISH WINTER CARNIVAL

T

here’s no better way to spice up a Montana winter than at the Whitefish Winter Carnival! Going strong since 1960, this beloved tradition is a zany mix of mountain culture and small-town fun at its best. From the high-speed thrills and epic wipeouts of the skijoring competition to the penguin plunge in icy Whitefish Lake, the carnival is a truly unique annual event. It’s built around a local legend of Ullr, Norse god of winter, and a pesky band of Yetis who all make their home in the high valleys of Big Mountain. They venture down to Whitefish each winter when the festivities begin—even Yetis need something to look forward to in the dark days of winter. The carnival events include the lively Merry Maker roast of Whitefish and a full-on “shake your groove thang” Disco Party. The festivities culminate in the Grand Parade, where the fur-clad Yetis gleefully terrorize the crowd and attempt to steal the Queen of Snows before being driven away by fearless local Vikings. Each year’s theme inspires a wild variety of costumes for both the parade spectators and participants; watch the action streetside or from one of the city’s elevated venues, like the rooftop patio of the Firebrand Hotel. However you choose to get in on the fun, this much-loved Whitefish tradition is the best way to beat cabin fever each February! # 1 I N M O N TA N A

shore from tight-knit Bigfork to Polson, a charming community that anchors the southern end of the lake. Located about halfway between Whitefish and Missoula, Polson is well-positioned for easy access to all parts of northwest Montana. It is also the commercial hub of the cherry industry and home to the annual Flathead Cherry Festival. These towns, along with the many small communities in between, offer a variety of places to stay, play, or settle down on the shores of Flathead Lake.

elcome to the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, a shimmering body of water picturesquely situated below the peaks of the Swan and Mission Mountain Ranges. Flathead Lake is so massive that the earth’s rotation affects the lake’s currents, a phenomenon normally seen only in oceans. This means that there is plenty of room for all sorts of fun, with almost 200 square miles of water, 185 miles of shoreline, and a variety of lakeside communities to choose from.

LAKE FUN FOR EVERYONE FLATHEAD LAKE ADDS GREAT PUBLIC ACCESS

F

or years, access to the seasonal sandy beach on the north shore of Flathead Lake had been one of those “in the know” activities: if you knew where to park and how to find the footpath through the tall grass, you could enjoy the vistas stretching south across the lake from the wide, sandy shores that appear each winter as the lake recedes and disappear in late spring as it fills

again. On clear midwinter days, skaters might carve across the wild ice or groups appear with hockey sticks and pucks for a friendly game. As the first vestiges of spring appeared, so would families with buckets of sand toys and frisbees. But it was always hard to tell exactly where the boundaries were, and there were no garbage cans, let alone bathrooms. Now, thanks to the generosity of the Sliters family, the descendants of Bigfork founder Everit Sliter, this incredible 106-acre property is being transformed into Somers Beach State Park. Though what amenities the park will offer are still being decided, one thing is for sure: this state park will be an enduring gift to the Flathead Valley for generations of lakegoers to enjoy. If there were any doubt about the appeal of public parks on Flathead Lake, the incredible popularity of Volunteer Park shows just how much they are enjoyed by the local

HOME SWEET LAKE HOUSE MAKING THE MOST OF WATERSIDE LIVING

A

lake house is so much more than a home that happens to be on the water. Just as the priorities for your time are different at the lake, so are the priorities for your lake house. Whether you’re building from scratch or looking for creative ways to make the most of the home you already have, here are a few tips:

communities. The park first opened in 2010, then a small slice of its current size, after local philanthropic couple Bruce Ennis and Margaret Davis generously purchased the land and donated the park to the county. They purchased more land as it became available and Volunteer Park now totals 4.8 acres and features multiple docks, a detached swim platform, and a large grassy area with pavilions perfect for birthday parties or family reunions. It’s named in recognition of all the people who have given their time, money, and talents over the years to make Lakeside and the west shore of Flathead Lake a wonderful place to live. A new boat launch is also under development near Dayton. The Montebello Fishing Access Site, almost 15 acres of day-use land, will have a boat ramp, picnic shelter, and other basic amenities, some of which should be completed by the fall of 2022. Its location makes it an excellent launching point for a day of exploring Wild Horse Island State Park.

Dock appeal. At the lake, the front of your house is the side you see from the water. Treat the lakeside door like the front door, and landscape accordingly. It’s also great to have a small water toy room or standalone shed off the side of the house for storing everything from pool noodles to paddleboards without tracking puddles inside. Bedrooms are for sleeping. When everyone is outside all day, there’s no reason to use more square footage than necessary on bedrooms. If you have a home with larger rooms, think bunkbeds! A lake house certainly never lacks for willing houseguests. Indoor-outdoor spaces. Maximize your lake days with a space that transitions seamlessly from home to water. Pocket doors on the lake side of the house are great for letting the summer breeze in, and a pergola or sail shade on the deck or dock provides a welcome respite from the August sun. When choosing furniture, you’ll thank yourself for selecting durable pieces that will stand up to a wet swimsuit or two. 47

F ENJOYING THE LAKESIDE LIFESTYLE AT THE FOOT OF THE SWAN MOUNTAINS

or over four decades, Memorial Day in Bigfork means an action-packed weekend of fun on the Swan River and Bigfork Bay at the Bigfork Whitewater Festival. What began as a group of kayakers running the rapids for free pizza and beer in the 1970s has evolved into a major race weekend that is part of the Western Whitewater Championship Series and draws both local and professional competitors. Racers paddle kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards in a variety of events, from the paddleboard race on Bigfork Bay to the giant slalom courses on the Class IV whitewater of the Wild Mile, as the last mile of the Swan River is commonly known. With a trailhead right in town, the Swan River Nature Trail provides an easily accessible vantage point for watching the races. Once the old highway to the Swan Valley, the trail runs along the river’s edge and provides front-row seats for all the action. Another great spot to see the races is from the historic steel bridge in downtown Bigfork, which puts you in close proximity to the other festival-related fun as well as Bigfork’s eclectic shops, galleries, and restaurants. 55

MISSOULA & THE BITTERROOT

For those who like just a little more wilderness in their Montana, the Bitterroot Valley is home to eight charming 62

small towns along the scenic stretch of Route 93 south of Missoula. Located between the mountains of the SelwayBitterroot and Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness Areas, the Bitterroot offers a combination of small-town charm and rugged natural beauty, from Stevensville in the north to Sula at the southern end. Charming Hamilton, with its historic downtown, anchors the valley as the county seat, but all of these towns are growing and thriving, thanks to their deep community roots and their proximity to Missoula’s opportunities and economy.

T

he Salish word from which ‘Missoula’ is derived translates roughly to “river of ambush/surprise,” a reference to the inter-tribal conflicts that often happened in the area. Today, Missoula only reflects that history as a captivatingly pleasant surprise: a thriving college town of 73,000 people buzzing with community minded energy, and yet just minutes from the solitude and adventure of the Montana wilderness. Both culture and adventure thrive here, even in the heart of town: kayakers surf Brennan’s Wave on the Clark Fork River while, just blocks away, locals and visitors stroll the unique shops and restaurants of the “Hip Strip,” the thriving downtown business district.

THE GRAND DAME OF MISSOULA’S MUSIC SCENE THE WILMA THEATER HAS BEEN CENTER STAGE SINCE 1921

E

dna Wilma was a star of the northwest vaudeville circuit in the early 1900s when she caught the eye of Billy Simons, an entrepreneur who produced Wild West shows and ran a thriving theater empire. They got married, moved to Missoula, and in 1921 built the Smead-Simons Building, an eight-story skyscraper (as Montana buildings go) on the banks of the Clark Fork River that featured apartments, offices, a cafe, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool in the basement—Missoula’s first indoor pool. The building’s showpiece was the gorgeous, gilded Wilma Theater, a Louis XIV-style palace theater with a pipe organ and seating for over 1,000.

Today, the Wilma remains both a sentinel of historic downtown Missoula and the beating heart of the city’s burgeoning live music scene. The modernized theater retains the gilded charm of the original while also 64

offering an intimate, world-class concert experience that landed it on Pollstar’s list of the top 100 clubs in the nation. A show at the Wilma is a chance to be up close with anyone from an up-and-coming band to a big name: Ben Folds, The Shins, and Lyle Lovett have all graced the stage in the past few years. The University of Montana and its 10,000 students also routinely draw the biggest names in music for shows at the Adams Center, which does double duty as a concert venue and the school’s basketball arena. Headliners have included Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, and Elton John, to name just a few of the star-studded performers to come through town. In 2017, Missoula added an outdoor venue to its live music options with the 4,000-person Kettlehouse Amphitheater, just nine miles east of downtown, providing the opportunity to experience world-class artists under the endless horizon of a Big Sky summer.

The Wilma—as the entire building quickly became known—was built just as silent movies were becoming popular, quickly replacing vaudeville as the preferred entertainment for the masses. From its earliest days, the theater was home to both live entertainment and movies: the first live performance, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, took place on May 11, 1921, just two days before the first film, The Mask of Zorro, starring Douglas Fairbanks, was shown. Even though the vaudeville circuit faded from popularity, Edna Wilma, who was known as a “light opera” singer, performed in the theater and the cafe throughout her life and was an active member of the Missoula community until her death in 1954.

A FESTIVAL OF FUN SUMMER CELEBRATIONS IN THE BITTERROOT VALLEY

S

mall-town life doesn’t get any better than on festival days. Old friends come home, neighbors gather together, and everyone enjoys the nostalgic fun of a Main Street parade or a good old-fashioned pie auction. Festival season in the Bitterroot Valley kicks off with Stevensville’s Western Heritage Days in June, celebrating the town’s claim to fame as the oldest permanent settlement in the state. Events continue throughout the summer’s sunny weekends, including

Strawberry Days in Darby, which has raffled strawberry shortcakes, fishing trips, and other prizes as a fundraiser for the town’s fire department for decades. Stevensville is also the home of the Creamery Picnic, a 111-yearold event celebrating the town coming together to rebuild the Bitterroot Cooperative Creamery after a devastating fire in 1911. Many of the valley’s other festivals happen in and around Hamilton, the county seat, including the Bitterroot Celtic Games, Hardtimes Bluegrass Festival, and Daly Days, named for copper king and Hamilton founder Marcus Daly. The season wraps up in October with the Mcintosh Apple Day Festival, named one of National Geographic’s Best Fall Events in Montana, which has expanded to also include the Liquid Apple Night hard cider festival. Mark your calendar for one—or more—weekends of small-town fun at its finest in the Bitterroot Valley! 65

4 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT

YELLOWSTONE Yellowstone looms as large in our collective imagination as it does in real life: a wildly varied landscape of peaks and canyons, crashing waterfalls and spurting geysers. It’s a place where wolves howl from the hillsides and enormous herds of buffalo stop traffic as they leisurely graze from one side of the road to the other. Here are

It’s Too Good to Be True The first organized expedition of the region that became Yellowstone took place in 1869. Two of the explorers, David E. Folsom and Charles W. Cook, combined their diaries into a cohesive account of their discoveries and attempted to have it published, but the major magazines and newspapers of the 76

day declined it as too fantastical to be accurate. As Folsom later commented, the editors seemed to view it as “the production of the too-vivid imagination of a typical Rocky Mountain liar.” Their account was eventually published in Western Monthly Magazine, and Folsom, the expedition leader, went on to serve as a Montana state senator.

some fun facts about this Rocky Mountain treasure:

It’s Number One

Yellowstone was the nation’s first true national park, signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1872. It was originally envisioned to exist at no cost to the government, but no funds meant no buildings, roads, rangers, or services. The first superintendent served without pay and only visited the park twice during his five-year term. Congress then authorized funding to “protect, preserve, and improve the park” and placed it under the care of the U.S. Army until 1918, when the newly formed National Park Service took over.

It’s Really Big

Yellowstone encompasses 2.2 million acres. That’s 3,742 square miles, or an area larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined. This vast wilderness contains more than 500 active geysers, 1,800 known archaeological sites, and 290 waterfalls. Yellowstone also boasts 67 species of mammals, the largest concentration in the continental United States, ranging from the one-ton bison to the masked shrew, which weighs just slightly more than a tablespoon of butter. With more than 900 miles of hiking trails, from boardwalks along burbling mud pots to the 18-mile Sky Rim Loop trail, Yellowstone’s vast and varied beauty offers the perfect outdoor adventure for every visitor’s interests.

It’s the Home Where Buffalo Have Always Roamed

This is the only place in the world where wild, free-range bison have continually existed since prehistoric times. The great herds of the American Plains were hunted to near extinction by the late 1800s, and even the Yellowstone herds were hunted and poached down to approximately two dozen bison by the turn of the 20th century. The U.S. Army introduced 21 bison from private herds into the park and, with vigilant protection, the population eventually recovered to the Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley herds of today, which number between 2,300 and 5,500 bison, one of the great triumphs of American conservation. # 1 I N M O N TA N A

Walking down bustling Main Street, it’s hard to imagine the days when Bozeman was little more than a stopover en route to the Virginia City gold rush. The burgeoning craft brewery scene and wide array of local businesses lend a funky, independent vibe to this former frontier town. hether you were born into a pair of cowboy boots or you can’t tell a header from a heeler, a rodeo is still a great way to enjoy a long summer evening. (In case you’re curious: in the team roping event, a header lassos the steer’s head and the heeler ropes the legs.) In Big Sky, bull riders have chosen the Big Sky PBR Rodeo as the Event of the Year for eight straight years. The Three Forks and Ennis rodeos date back to the 1940s and ‘50s, respectively, and are still an excitement-packed weekend as these great small towns show off the best of their Montana heritage. FUR, FEATHERS, AND HOOKS THE ART OF TYING FLIES

I

f fishing were easy, they’d call it catching. Convincing a brown trout or a cutthroat that the hook on the end of your line is actually a delicious, buggy treat is no small feat—it requires both knowing where and how to cast your line and what to put on the end of it. Enter the art of tying flies. For centuries, fishermen have been attaching bits of this and that to their hooks, attempting to imitate whatever the fish seem to be hungry for. Today’s fly tying is a beautiful blend of science and art: fishermen research what the fish are eating and when, then head to their workbenches and pull from drawers full of fur, yarn, and feathers to wrap a convincing replica around a hook. With the addition of synthetic materials, some fly tyers now also design their flies to move a certain way in the river in addition to looking like a trout’s favorite snack. Blue-ribbon fly fishing abounds in the rivers around Bozeman: the Yellowstone, Gallatin, Jefferson, and Madison rivers are all the stuff of fly fishermen’s dreams. The town’s fly shops are packed with flies, supplies, and experts, whether you’re looking to buy woolly buggers by the dozen or tie your own supply of elk hair caddis. # 1 I N M O N TA N A

The thriving heart of the year-round Big Sky community can be found in the Meadow, the town seven miles down the road from the ski resort that’s nestled between the surrounding peaks and the winding forks of the Gallatin River. The seasonal influx of visitors to the resort supports an outsize selection of restaurants, galleries, and amenities for a town of 3,000 year-round residents. Combined with the incredible variety of outdoor recreation, those who say you can’t have it all have clearly never been to Big Sky.

any Montana towns grew up alongside the economy of the early 20th century: railroads, logging, mining, ranching, and even gold rushes. Big Sky is a different story—though some homesteaders moved into the area in the early 1900s, the community didn’t form until after Chet Huntley, the Montana-born NBC news anchor, started development of Big Sky Resort in the late 1960s.

Recognizing that Big Sky lacked indoor space accessible to the entire community—for either fitness or gatherings— the Big Sky Community Organization undertook an ambitious $20 million project to rectify both issues. The result: a two-story facility that offers a little bit of everything, from a light-filled gymnasium surrounded by a walking track to the new home for the Arts Council of Big Sky, including a classroom with six pottery wheels and a kiln. The space was designed with the long-term needs of the entire community in mind, with thoughtful touches like a vestibule positioned near the bus stop, providing a warm place to wait for a ride. It has the expected gym amenities, including a two-story rock wall and spin classes, but also mental health and wellness services and an open lounge with ping pong and air hockey, achieving the organization’s goal of a community center that truly offers something for everyone.

rom the day the first eager skiers loaded onto the lifts in 1973, Big Sky Resort has never rested on its laurels. The decades in between have seen the addition of new terrain, chairlifts, and mountain amenities, keeping the resort one of the top skiing destinations in the country. Now Big Sky Resort is in the final phase of Big Sky 2025, its ambitious 10-year plan to transform the entire Big Sky experience. Taking a holistic view of

the ski area and its community, the plan addresses every aspect of the resort: improved air and ground transportation, new dining options, and additional workforce housing within walking distance of the slopes. The resort has upgraded five existing chairlifts with larger, faster models, including Swift Current 6, now the fastest lift in North America. Ramcharger 8 was installed in 2018 as the first 8-person chairlift on the continent, whisking 3,600 skiers per hour to the top of Andesite Mountain. These two lifts, as well as the 6-person Powder Seeker, feature ultra-wide heated seats and weatherproof bubbles for the ultimate mountain experience. The resort will also be replacing the 25-year-old tram to the top of Lone Peak. A new two-stage gondola will connect from the village to a mid-mountain learning center, then continue on to the base of the tram, where a new food and beverage hub with multiple dining options and a panoramic look at Lone Peak will serve inspiration with a side of fries. # 1 I N M O N TA N A

BILLINGS & RED LODGE

Red Lodge began as a coal mining town, but when the Depression took its toll on mining, a local physician came up with a brilliant idea to boost the local economy: he successfully lobbied Congress for a scenic approach highway to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Highway 212, more commonly known as the Beartooth Highway, opened in 1936 and continues to awe travelers as it climbs to the 10,974foot summit pass, offering jaw-dropping panoramas of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness before descending to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone. 10 8

In fact, Billings is named for Northern Pacific Railway President Frederick Billings, who was also a major voice for the conservation of Yellowstone National Park. The town earned the nickname “Magic City” because it went from a settlement of three houses to a population

he Big Sky State gets even bigger as you travel from Red Lodge, nestled in the Beartooth Mountains and surrounded by the Custer Gallatin National Forest, to Billings, where the foothills of the Rockies roll gently out into the endless vistas of central Montana. These neighboring towns started from two storied Montana industries: mining and the railroad.

of over 2,000 in a matter of months, appearing almost like magic. Today, it is Montana’s largest city and continues its legacy as the regional trade and distribution center, serving a swath of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. In addition to a thriving economy, Billings is a city packed with life and activity. Downtown boasts the Brew Trail, Montana’s only walkable brewery tour, featuring six breweries, two distilleries, and a cider house within a 1.5-mile loop. The Magic City Blues Festival draws thousands of fans each summer, with headliners from ZZ Top to Ziggy Marley. To top it off, the outdoors beckon in every direction. The recreational opportunities gave the city its second nickname, Montana’s Trailhead, and it truly is the perfect place to begin and end your next Montana adventure.

housands of miles of trails wind through the state of Montana, but no two paths offer the same view. In Billings, one of the most striking natural features is the Rimrocks, sandstone cliffs that rise above the north end of the city. They were created tens of millions of years ago when Billings was the shore of the Western Interior Seaway, a swath of water that stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic. They’re now home to fun and challenging hiking and biking trails that provide a bird’s eye view over Billings and the surrounding mountain ranges. Another fascinating look at Montana’s prehistory is Pictograph Cave State Park. Pictograph Cave contains more than 100 rock paintings—pictographs—some of which date back more than 2,000 years. Between this cave and the two other caves in the park, researchers excavated more than 30,000 artifacts, including stone tools and items that indicated trade with other people groups, such as seashell beads from the Pacific Coast and barbed harpoon points made of caribou horn. An insider tip: the pictographs look their best after a rainstorm or snowmelt, when the moisture makes the colors more prominent. # 1 I N M O N TA N A
