1956: THE KILLING
1995: HEAT
Stanley Kubrick’s account of an ambitious racetrack robbery is one of Hollywood’s tautest, twistiest noirs. It tells about a criminal, who recruits a bartender, a betting teller, an astray police officer and a sharpshooter to pull off one last heist at the racetrack. Things go amiss when the betting teller tells his wife about the plan and she creates another plan of her own. One of the undisputed high-water marks of the cinematic world, it is a film whose reverberations can still be felt in a number of ways. It unequivocally represents the genesis of Kubrick’s insightful mindset as a living, breathing laboratory of precision and control.
Arguably the greatest American heist movie ever made, Micheal Mann”s masterpiece creates an incredible pressure cooker that explodes when Robert De Niro and his gang rob a bank and Al Pacino and his team are in hot pursuit. It has achieved a cult status among cinema lovers. The dinner scene between the lead actors is one of the best scenes of the cinematic world. A sleek, accomplished piece of work, meticulously controlled and completely involving. A modern classic and a masterpiece of its genre!!
1995: THE USUAL SUSPECTS
1992: RESERVOIR DOGS
Quentin Tarantino’s film is memorable because it works tremendously even though we never see the heist happen. It tells us how a perfectly planned diamond heist goes awry and tension arises among the members, when they find out any one of them is a police informer. Tarantino’s usual aspects mark themselves throughout the whole piece — violent crime, pop culture references and non-linear storyline, making it a cinema which has garnered a cult status since. PVR MOVIES FIRST
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist – This sums up everything about the the most enigmatic criminal of all time, Keyser Soze. Kevin Spacey is iconic as a con man named Kint who along with four other crooks gets mixed up with a criminal mastermind in a multi-million dollar heist that goes balls to the wall. Bryan Singer’s film leaves cinema audiences completely wrong-footed with one of the best endings in the history of cinema. It’s a film that will stay with you long after you’ve seen it - Brilliantly written and utterly enthralling! PAGE 10
2001: OCEAN’S ELEVEN
Soderbergh makes it on the list with a lighthearted take that has a more fulfilling payoff. Hitting three of the major casinos in Vegas simultaneously leads to a great finale that’s capped by entertaining performances by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. Not a normal heist film, but one done with extreme caution and perfection to avoid wrongs. Danny Ocean and his eleven accomplices plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos simultaneously. The two things which give this film an edge over others is the relationship between Clooney’s Ocean and Pitt’s Ryan and a hint of personal vengeance over financial gain, which had initiated the heist in Ocean’s mind. As fast-paced, witty, and entertaining as it is star-studded and coolly stylish, it offers a well-seasoned serving of popcorn entertainment.
2006: INSIDE MAN
to place an idea in a person’s mind. Nolan explores yet another intriguing and beautiful theme, our dream space, empowering innovation and uniqueness.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Keanu Reeves Actor, director, and producer Keanu Reeves turns 53 on September 02. Here are 5 fun facts about the “Matrix” star, who shares his birthday with Salma Hayek and Jimmy Connors.
Spike Lee’s truly remarkable heist film just grabs you by the sheer inspirational brilliance of the heist itself. It is about a sturdy police detective, who faces a methodical bank robber and how a tense hostage crisis unfolds, along with a mysterious woman, who has a secret motive and threatens the whole situation, making the film much more than a cat-and-mouse chase story. We are given insight into both what the bank robbers and the police are doing, yet are all withheld vital information until the very end, which leads to one of the greatest twists in Hollywood history.
2010: INCEPTION
Christopher Nolan takes the heist premise and adds the human mind to create a trippy thriller that follows a team, led by Leonardo DiCaprio, that attempts to steal corporate secrets from the mind of a CEO without slipping into the black holes of their own brains. The film complicates when he is given a near-to-impossible task, PVR MOVIES FIRST

“Baadshaho” is a period heist thriller, and “Bhoomi” a small-town family drama. Sharad Kelkar, who plays lead characters in both, tells us about the movies and his role in them. What makes “Baadshaho” a great watch It’s a multistarrer masala movie, set during the Emergency. The film is part fiction, partly based on real incidents. The songs are already a rage, and the story is full of twists and turns. You will see Rajasthan as never presented before; the cinematography is brilliant. When you come out of the theatre, you will have a smile on your face! And “Bhoomi” It’s the emotional story of a family in a small town. GUEST INTERVIEW
Photography is from Poland, and has done a superb job of presenting Agra, where the film is set. Your roles in both the films In “Baadshaho,” every character is after the gold, including me! I play a cop, but because greed is a key motive, I too manipulate situations to suit my needs. In “Bhoomi,” I play the main villain, who will remind you of the Amrish Puri era. It is a character that’s not just grey but totally black. It is my first-ever portrayal of a negative role. Memorable Moment My first scene in “Bhoomi” was in a crowded marketplace. I had to deliver a menacing monologue with an evil swagger, while Sanjay Dutt is just watching. It was quite unnerving, but after I completed the shot, Sanjay Dutt walked up and hugged me. It’s a moment that will stay with me forever. PAGE 22
THE LIFE OF A LEGEND:

Gulzar
In the world of Indian cinema, Gulzar is a name that needs no introduction. A writer, poet and a director, Gulzar is an institution in himself and has donned many hats in the last 50 years that he’s been in the film industry. An inspiration for a whole generation of writers and lyricists, he has been the recipient of Padma Bhushan, the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award along with a Grammy and an Oscar. Early Life & Career: Born on August 18, 1936 in Deena, a small town in British India (now in Pakistan), Gulzar was the son of Makhan Singh Kalra and Sujan Kaur. Since childhood, he showed an inclination towards literature and poetry by participating in antaksharis, learning shairis and listening to Hindustani music. Post India-Pakistan partition his family moved to Amritsar and he was later sent to Bombay where he started working as a garage worker and wrote poetry in his spare time. In Bombay, he came in contact with established writers like Krishan Chander, Shailendra, and Ali Sardar Jafri. It was through Shailendra that he first met famous director Bimal Roy for whom he wrote his first song “Mora Gora Ang Lei Le…” in the 1963 movie “Bandini.” The song became a hit and Guzar ended up joining Bimal Roy as a full time assistant. He started writing for films by acclaimed directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Asit Kumar Sen. Some of the films he has written include “Anand,” “Guddi,” “Bawarchi,” and “Namak Haraam” for Mukherjee; and “Do Dooni Char,” “Khamoshi,” and “Safar” for Sen. Gulzar - The Lyricist: While Gulzar is now much revered as a poet, author, writer and director, most his success and widespread recognition is through his songwriting. PVR MOVIES FIRST
ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA
In 1968, Gulzar penned the lyrics and dialogues for Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film “Aashirwad.” His poetic lyrics gave a much-needed additional dimension to Ashok Kumar’s character in the film and he went on to bag the Best Actor award at the Filmfare and at the National Film Awards. He wrote the song “Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena” from the 1971film “Guddi.” The song continues to be used as a prayer in many Indian schools. As a lyricist, he has had close associations with music directors like RD Burman, SD Burman, Shankar- Jaikishan,

DID YOU KNOW? • Since his father rebuked him for being a writer, he started writing under the pen name, Gulzar Deenvi (after his birthplace Dina) and later just Gulzar. • Gulzar is married to famous actress Rakhee. The couple have a daughter together, writer-director Meghna Gulzar. • Gulzar always used a flashback technique in his films, due to his belief that the present is never complete until the past is reflected upon. • In 1988, Gulzar directed an eponymous television serial “Mirza Ghalib” starring Naseeruddin Shah. He considers it his best work till date. • Gulzar has also involved himself in many projects that cater to a younger audience. He wrote the popular opening track of TV serials “Jungle Book”. • Gulzar claims that it was Rabindra Nath Tagore’s book ‘The Gardener’ that inspired him the most and completely changed his life.
it comes to the art of filmmaking. He made his directorial debut with the 1971 film “Mere Apne” starring Meena Kumari and Vinod Khanna and the film turned out to be a hit at the box office. He followed it up with critically successful films like “Parichay”, “Koshish,” and “Aandhi.” His 1975-film “Mausam” won the Filmfare for Best Picture. His last directorial outing was in the 1999 drama “Hu Tu Tu.”
QUICK FACTS Hemant Kumar, Laxmikant Pyarelal and Anu Malik amongst others. His collaboration with AR Rahman on “Slumdog Millionaire” won him a Grammy and an Academy Award. His Writing Process: Gulzar usually write words on the metre of the tune though it can be other way around too. He is participative in the process of the film he is writing for and believes that the context in which the song appears in the story is of the utmost importance. “Does the song enhance the story in some way? Does it add another dimension to the screen character? The lyrics should match the vocabulary a character uses in dialogue. If the hero is an Urdu speaker, you can’t introduce Sanskritized Hindi into the lyrics,” he says. Time and again, Gulzar has drawn inspiration from great works of literature. He took Amir Khusro’s “Ay Sarbathe Aashiqui” and adapted it to “Ay Hairathe Aashiqui” for Mani Ratnam’s “Guru.” Similarly “Chaiyya Chaiyya” from “Dil Se” was based on the Sufi folk song “Thaiyya Thaiyya” by Bulleh Shah. Gulzar’s grasp of human emotions is second to none and his ability to mould himself with time has made his lyrics relevant across generations. If he has written emotional odes to love, he’s also penned “Kajra Re.” If he’s made the Oscar-winning “Jai Ho” with AR Rahman, he’s also written for a Yo Yo Honey Singh single “Horn OK Please” in Dedh Ishqiya, proving that he can read the pulse of every generation.

HISTORY This bittersweet, heart-rending comedy drama is a big city satire with a romantic heart. The sophisticated yet cynical film is a bleak assessment of corporate America, big business and capitalism, success and the work ethic. It is a blistering commentary on contemporary ant-hill society and its amoral inhabitants. THE PLOT: Jack Lemmon plays CC Baxter, a nerdy, naive, good natured salaryman in a Manhattan insurance office. In order to climb the corporate ladder, he allows four company managers, to use his bachelor apartment after work for adulterous sexual affairs and liaisons. The chief offender is the conceited personnel chief, Mr. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray). Baxter is shyly falling in love with his building’s pretty and smart elevator operator, Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine). The plot thickens when he realizes that Fran is being taken for trysts by his married boss Sheldrake to his apartment.

It has William Holden as a paramour to a grotesque aging movie queen (Gloria Swanson). WOW FACTOR: As one of the most remarkable blends of comedy and drama to have ever been filmed, this film, in subtle ways, rises well above the conventions of any genre. It won five Oscars at the 33rd Academy Awards, including the best picture. The screenplay, by Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is something of a chocolate-covered cherry, flavored with hemlock. The story presents considerable immorality without obvious comment. Lemmon is perfect casting for his part. His guileless and amiable good looks might have been chosen by a personnel department test for the role. But he has, too, a rudimentary toughness and kindness that is believable. Miss MacLaine, the girl in the limbo lost, has acute identification, so strong it hurts. The gamine is not the only role she can play, but no one else can play it better. MacMurray, such a sturdy actor, plays a detestable character but with such shading he is conceivable and if not forgivable, at least dismissible.
SCREEN
Some Like It Hot (1959) *Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon When two male musicians witness a mob hit, they flee the state in an all-female band disguised as women, but further complications set in. It is underwired with Wilder’s cheerful cynicism. Curtis thinks he wants only sex, Monroe thinks she wants only money, and they are as astonished as delighted to find they want only each other.
SATIRE
The Days of Wine and Roses (1962) *Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, Charles Bickford, Jack Klugman The film depicts the downward spiral of two average Americans who succumb to alcoholism and attempt to deal with their problems. It is the intense dramatic portrayal of an alcoholic, co-dependent couple.
