old space saga on its head by recasting Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker as the big baddie? It’s just a few days until we find out.

‘ In December 2015, the seventh installment of Star Wars franchisee “The Force Awakens” made the world fall in love with the space sage all over again. And last year, Disney came out with their first Star Wars spinoff, “Rogue One.” The success of these movies solidified the confidence of its fans in the directions the franchisee was taking. On this 15th of December, the wildly popular franchisee returns to the big screens with its ninth installment “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” to take us on another journey in a galaxy far, far away.

THE PLOT: “The Last Jedi” begins immediately after the events of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which ended with Rey (Daisy Ridley) coming face-to-face with an elderly Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), now living a life off monastic solitude on a planet called Ahch-To. The movie continues the story of Rey and her discovery of the force, delves deeper into the reasons behind the self-imposed exile of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, along with a major war that’s brewing up between General Leia Organa’s Resistance and the First Order. THE MAIN PLAYERS REY: After finally finding Luke Skywalker in his hiding, Rey starts training with him to become a Jedi. Another continuing mystery about Rey is the identity of her parents and she might start to pick up threads to learn more about her past while fighting to find a bigger purpose of her life. LUKE SKYWALKER: It is confirmed. Out from his exile, the beloved protagonist of the original franchisee will have a larger role to play this time. However, events of the past have left him bitter and hurt and he is cautious about what Rey’s massive power might bring about, thus making him reluctant to train her.

he second film is where we start zooming in on the characters and getting to the heart of them, challenging them, and pushing them deeper. – Rian Johnson, Director

SUPREME LEADER SNOKE: While he was reduced to a few holographic appearances in the last movie, “The Last Jedi,” will give us a full-on look at this master of the Dark Side of the Force. We might even get a deeper insight into his motivations behind his evil scheme of things. THE NEW PLAYERS Vietnamese actress named Veronica Ngo joins the cast as Paige Tico, a gunner in the rebellion. She’s joined by her sister Rose Tico (played by Kelly Marie Tran) who is out on her own journey with Finn. Another new character is DJ - a shady character of unclear allegiances played by Benicio Del Toro. Actress Laura Dern joins the cast as Vice Admiral Holdo, a prominent officer in the Resistance.

GENERAL LEIA ORGANA: Carrie Fisher returns for one final appearance as the leader of the Resistance, which is one of the few remaining bulwarks against the First Order in the wake of the New Republic’s decimation in “The Force Awakens.” KYLO REN: Kylo Ren came close to finding Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but walked away empty handed after being stopped in his tracks by Ray and Finn. But his quest to kill Luke certainly isn’t over ¬ especially now that he has killed his father Han Solo. PVR MOVIES FIRST

04

This will be the first Star Wars film in the series in which Kenny Baker will not be involved in the portrayal of R2-D2.

THE DIRECTOR: While J.J. Abrams laid the groundwork for the future of the Star Wars saga, the reins of taking it forward has been handed over to writer-director Rian Johnson. The young filmmaker broke out onto the scene with his fantastic, gritty neo-noir “Brick,” and followed it up with the fun caper “The Brothers Bloom.” With his trippy time travel action movie “Looper,” he has demonstrated a knack for sci-fi storytelling, and it’s exciting to think of what he will do with a mix of iconic characters. Is it possible for a director to consecutively come out with great movies every year? Well, yes, if you are Denis Villeneuve. With eight feature films to his credit, including “Prisoners,” “Sicario,” “Arrival,” and “Blade Runner 2049,” Villeneuve has rapidly shot up the ranks of working filmmakers. Each one of his movies is radically different than the last and has been lauded by critics and fans alike. Villeneuve looks set on a track to become one of the most revered directors in Hollywood. Early Life & Career: Born on October 3, 1967 in TroisRivières, Quebec, to Nicole Demers and Jean Villeneuve, Denis Villeneuve abandoned a career in science to his love for filmmaking at Université du Québec à Montréal. He began his film career in 1988, still in his early twenties, when he directed a television documentary “La course destination monde.” Two years later, he participated and won Radio-Canada’s youth film competition “La Course Europe-Asie.” This feat qualified him to receive funds from the National Film Board for his future projects. In the year 1994, without any studio support, Villeneuve wrote and directed a short film titled “REW-FFD.” In 1996, Villeneuve got an opportunity to direct a segment in an anthology of short films called “Cosmos.” Villeneuve made the tense segment titled “Le Technetium” which helped him immensely to showcase his abundant talent.

DID YOU KNOW? • Dennis Villeneuve’s favourite film is Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” • His trademark styles include violent realism, an attendtion-grabbing opening sequence, and stories with several layers of twist. • In January 2011, Villeneuve was selected by Variety as one of the top ten filmmakers to watch out for. • Villeneuve doesn’t use any music when he’s editing which means the first edit of his films is without music. • He is a four-time recipient of the Canadian Screen Award (formerly Genie Award) for Best Direction. • Villeneuve frequently uses a song by Radiohead in his films. • His 2016 sci-fi drama “Arrival” received eight nominations at the 89th Academy Awards and won the award for Best Sound Editing.

film was selected also as Canada’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 71st Academy Awards. Breakthrough & International Acclaim: His real breakthrough came in the year 2000 with the Canadian film “Maelström” starring Marie-Josee Croze. The drama follows a depressed, alcoholic woman who falls in love with the son of a man whom she accidentally killed in a hit-andrun. The film was widely praised on the international film festival circuit and won a total of 23 awards including eight Jutra Awards; five Genie Awards (Canada’s equivalent of Academy Awards); and a Best Canadian Film Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. He followed it up with the critically acclaimed “Polytechnique” in 2009 and sibling drama “Incendies” in 2010. In fact, “Incendies” was chosen to represent Canada at the 83rd Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film and was eventually nominated for the award too. It won a host of awards and was chosen by The New York Times as one of the ‘10 Best Films of 2011.’ Hollywood Comes Calling: The great success of “Incendies” put Villeneuve’s international profile at peak and soon, Hollywood came knocking. HISTORY Part period piece, part chase film, part drama, Spielberg’s movie about the youngest person ever to make the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List is terrifically entertaining. It is the most charming of Spielberg’s mature films, because is it so relaxed. Instead of trying to conjure fairytale magic, wring tears or insinuate a message, it is happy just to be its delicious, genially sophisticated self. PLOT: The film is based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr(DiCaprio) who, before his 19th birthday, successfully performed cons, worth millions of dollars by posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot, a Georgia doctor and a Louisiana parish prosecutor. A master of deception, he was a brilliant forger, whose skill at check fraud had netted him millions of dollars in stolen funds. FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Hanks) has made it his prime mission to capture Frank and bring him to justice, but Frank is always one step ahead of him, baiting him to continue the chase. He became so experienced that the FBI eventually turned to him for help in catching other check forgers. WOW FACTOR: Every single element of this movie works brilliantly together and the result is as irresistible as its conman hero. It is arguably the best acted of any Spielberg film. DiCaprio captures us from his first moment as an awkward 13-year-old to his sheer pleasure in his own ability to master the adult world. Tom Hanks hones a severe, potentially drab role into an incisive, touching character study of a lonely, humorless New England workaholic, whose adrenaline is fired by a cat and mouse game.. Spielberg’s skill as a filmmaker comes in choosing the right collaborators. The screenplay by Jeff Nathanson is excellent, as crafty as its subject and with just the right touch of heart. Janusz Kaminski’s gorgeous cinematography, Michael Kahn’s graceful editing, Jeff Nathanson’s clever script and John Williams’ score, all work beautifully in unison to create a masterpiece. It is a fascinating and at times almost giddy look at how one fiercely intelligent fellow exploited America’s fascination with the materialistic trappings of success. By simply wearing the right clothes, saying the right words and flashing the right status symbols, Frank was able to be whomever he wanted. DiCaprio told an interviewer that Spielberg “thought maybe it wouldn’t be a good idea” for him to meet Frank Abagnale, but DiCaprio contacted him anyway, somewhat secretly, and spent a few days following him around with a tape recorder. This Month 15 Years Ago FROM THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR: SAVING PRIVATE RYAN(1998): This is an epic war drama film set during the Invasion of Normandy in World War II. It follows a United States Army Rangers Captain and a squad, as they search for a paratrooper, who is the last surviving brother of four servicemen. In many ways, Ryan re-defined the genre, but it’s also soaked in the traits of its predecessors thanks to its visceral patriotism and emotion, all of which you can’t help but become enveloped by. This is Spielberg at the peak of his powers, and it’s a film that only he could have made. SCHINDLER’S LIST(1993): Spielberg circled Schindler’s List for years, concerned he didn’t have the skills or maturity necessary to dramatize the story of Oskar Schindler, the Nazi Party member who used his position as a German industrialist to save nearly 1,200 Jews during World War II. He finally started filming in early 1993, and the result is one of the most widely acclaimed movies of the nineties and the crowning achievement of his career. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL(1982): A modern classic that added another jewel to Spielberg’s crown, earned nine Oscar nominations, and created millions fans, this film imagined what might happen if an alien life form came to Earth and had more to fear from us than we did from it. It tells the story of Elliott, a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help E.T. return to his home planet while attempting to keep him hidden from their mother and the government. JAWS(1975): After reluctantly, taking the reins on the big screen adaptation of this bestseller about a New England town terrorized by a great white shark, Spielberg found himself beset by production problems, studio deadlines and budget benchmarks. The entire project was nearly shut down, but he ultimately delivered, and the result was a paradigm shifting blockbuster that reaped incredible box office dividends in addition to overwhelmingly positive reviews. This movie elevated Spielberg from the young Hollywood elite to the industry’s upper echelon of filmmakers, Spielberg’s other films are Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), The Color Purple (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), Jurassic Park(1993), Amistad (1997), A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), and War of the Worlds (2005), Munich (2005), War Horse (2011), Lincoln (2012), and Bridge of Spies (2015). His other films include Jurassic Park (1993). PAGE 27
