THOR: RAGNAROK The End of Everything!
In “Age of Ultron,” Chris Hemsworth’s Thor left the rest of The Avengers to investigate an apocalyptic vision he’d been having. “Thor: Ragnarok,” the third film in Marvel’s “Thor” franchisee picks up sometime thereafter revealing that the apocalypse Thor is seeing is Ragnarok, the prophesied end of his homeworld of Asgard. Imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer Mjolnir, he finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela, played by Academy Award-winning actor Cate Blanchett. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger — the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). PVR MOVIES FIRST
DID YOU KNOW? • In Norse mythology, Ragnarok is translated as “Twilight of the Gods”. The myth tells of the eventual destruction of the universe and mankind, as well as the deaths of several key figures in Norse Mythology, such as the gods Odin, Thor, Loki, and Heimdall. • This is the first time you’ll see Hulk talking in a movie, trying to say complete sentences. • Eighty percent of the dialogue in the film was improvised, in order to create a “very loose and collaborate mood” among the cast. • Director Taika Waititi will also be playing a cameo in the film as an alien being Korg.
PAGE 4
Helmed by New Zealand-born Taika Waititi — best known for his work on the vampire mockumentary “What We Do In The Shadows” — the film features an A-list star cast of Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, and Anthony Hopkins in pivotal roles. With a great storyline to boot, “Thor: Ragnarok” looks side-splittingly funny, with director Taiko Watiti fully tapping Hemsworth’s comedic talent. It’ll take Thor to a new world where he’ll face threats to the existence of Earth and Asgard while also digging deeper into Norse mythology than ever before. Old friends could die, new friends could rise, and as announced by producer Kevin Feige, it’s going to play a significant role in setting up the biggest Marvel movie yet, “Avengers: Infinity War.”
The Collection “Thor: Ragnarok” is the the seventeenth film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the sixth movie the God of Thunder has been a part of. Here is a sneak-peek of other movies the Asgardian warrior prince has been a part of:
Reason to Watch:
Primed to be a “buddy road movie” with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), “Thor: Ragnarok” would see the God of Thunder teaming up with the Hulk, another MCU character who was missing from “Captain America: Civil War.”
Thor (2011)
Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) too will be joining Thor in his newest endeavour.

JUSTICE LEAGUE
Release Date: 17 November, 2017 Tagline: “You can’t save the World alone” Language: English (U/A) Director: Zack Snyder Star Cast: Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Henry Cavill as Superman. Genre: Superhero, Action-Adventure, Fantasy Studio: DC Entertainment, RatPac-Dune Entertainment, and Warner Bros.
With Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman (2017) breaking hearts and box office records alike, audience frenzy for “Justice League” has hit fever pitch. Fans have waited more than two years for this superhero bonanza starring Ben Affleck as the Batman, forced to unite with Earth’s mightiest superheroes under threat of alien attack. PVR MOVIES FIRST
MOVIE OF THE MONTH
With Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg joining the fun, it’s easy to predict that Justice League is slated to become the year’s— perhaps the decade’s— biggest blockbuster.
‘ ustice League’ is liberating for us: now we have a single enemy with a single objective, and it’s about uniting the team. That to me is fun. – Zack Snyder, Director
PAGE 7
atman is the ultimate loner, but in ‘Justice League’ he’s trying to work with the team. He knows he needs them. – Ben Affleck, actor
The Plot: Fueled by a restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater ally, and Barry Allen (The Flash), Arthur Curry (Aquaman), and Victor Stone (Cyborg) are on top of their recruitment list. The question, however, is where is Superman? The Cast: Ben Affleck return as the gruff, broken version of Batman he wowed his fans with in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Tasked with leading the campaign to save Earth from total annhilation, he downplays some of Batman’s more primal instincts in Justice League, playing a more responsible, leadership role this time around. Gal Gadot is Wonder Woman. Storming into theatres with her own solo film a few months ago, Gal is a major tour de force in the superhero world. Inspiring young girls and boys alike with her ferocious, brave interpretation of the character, audiences are equally keen to see how her character shapes the famed Justice League.
PVR MOVIES FIRST
Jason Momoa is known primarily for his role as the frightening Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones. The Hawaiin superstar is a natural fit for the role of Aquaman, since he’s spent most of his life in and around water. His love for surfing, his wild mane, and his distinct tattoos were all incorporated into his on-screen character, making for the coolest superhero debut in ages. Rounding up the cast are Ezra Miller as The Flash and Ray Fisher as Cyborg, both of whom play vital roles in Justice League. The Director: Zack Snyder is synonymous with superheroes, renowned for his work on films like 300 (2006), Watchmen (2009), and Man of Steel (2013), and last year’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. His remarkable sense for high-stakes action sequences and mind-boggling set pieces are on full display in Justice League as well. After all, this is the Cinematic Universe that Snyder has single-handedly built for himself.
PAGE 8
Trivia 01
Justice League was initially planned as a two-part tale, with the first part ending on a cliffhanger. It was only midway through production that the plan was changed, and the two movies are now separate entities with a broad, overlapping storyline.
02
JK Simmons is playing Commisioner Gordon, his second outing in the world of superheroes. The Academy Award winner is famous for his role as J. Jonah Jameson, the foul-mouthed Editor of the The Daily Bugle in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man Trilogy.
03
Most films end up reshooting scenes after filming wraps, and Justice League was no different. However, by the time reshoots came along, Henry Cavill (who plays Superman) was already filming his part in the next Mission: Impossible film, where his character sports a moustache. Since he couldn’t shave the moustache off and still maintain continuity, the makers had to digitally remove Cavill’s moustache from every shot in the reshoots.
04
There are rumors doing the rounds that we may see a cameo by not one but two different Green Lanters – which make sense, considering that the Justice League is incomplete without the Green Lanterns.
Unfortunately, Zack Snyder had to step down midway through post-production after an unfortunate personal tragedy required his full attention. He brought aboard good friend Joss Whedon to lead the way in his stead, who, as we know, is quite deft at handling multiple superheroes on screen; this is the man responsible for both “The Avengers” (2012) and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), both of which were bona fide blockbusters. Emma Stone Hollywood’s highest paid actress Emma Stone turns 29 on the 6th of November. Here are 5 fun facts about Emma, who shares her birthday with Sally Field and Ethan Hawke. 1. Emma’s real name is Emily Jean Stone. She started to use “Emma” as her professional name, because there was already an “Emily Stone” when she applied for her actors’ guild card. Marlin, an overly protective clownfish is separated from his son Nemo after Nemo ventures too far from his home and is abducted by a boat to be dumped into a fish tank in a dentist’s office. So, Marlin along with a friendly-but-forgetful Pacific regal blue tang Dory sets out on a journey to bring Dory home. Packed with memorable characters, humour and heartfelt emotions, the movie carries a valuable lesson about letting children make their own mistakes.

She shares a tattoo of bird feet on her wrist with her mother because “Blackbird” by the Beatles is their favourite song. Paul McCartney, who wrote the song, drew the bird feet for Emma after she wrote him a letter asking him to do so. 4. She has a phobia of being lifted in the air, because she broke both her arms after being lifted onto a high beam during gymnastics in school. 5. In her days of struggle, Emma Stone worked at a dogbiscuit bakery in Los Angeles.

Kalki Koechlin & Sumeet Vyas
Kalki Koechlin and Sumeet Vyas, the lead pair of “Ribbon,” tell us what makes this urban drama set in Mumbai a compelling watch. A great reason to watch Ribbon Kalki: it is a bittersweet film that talks about ‘life between loose ends, something that we are all dealing with. It’s about how we think we have it all when we first fall in love and get married, only to realise that we’ve got to renegotiate our way through our relationships, both domestic and professional. Sumeet: The director, Rakhi Sandilya, has been a documentary filmmaker, and the way she marries that style with storytelling is beautiful. It’s a subtle, nuanced film with a very ‘today’ story. Tell us about your role in the film Kalki: My character Shahana is very capable and ambitious. When the film begins, she has just got a promotion. Then a baby comes along, and Shahana suddenly finds herself coping with new responsibilities, changing roles and hormonal upheavals. Sumeet: I play Karan, who lives and works in Mumbai. My character is madly in love with his wife, and thinks he is PVR MOVIES FIRST
GUEST INTERVIEW
very evolved in a new age way, but the prejudices he has grown up with surface in his relationship. The key takeway from Ribbon? Kalki: I think the film offers an aftertaste of hope. It shows you life as it is, but does not offer any solutions. At the same time, it does not leave a lingering “dark” mood in its wake. Real and relatable people, caught in the throes of everyday life; that’s “Ribbon.” Sumeet: A ribbon binds a gift together in a beautiful way. In the film, “ribbon” is an analogy for the bond between a couple, and how it sometimes comes loose. Watching the film, you will realise how modern pressures compel you to think about the middle-class roles you have been assigned while you were growing up. Fun Facts Kalki: “Thanks to this film, I am a pro at bringing up babies! I can change nappies, feed them, lull them to sleep, the works!” Sumeet: “The three-year-old in the film refused to speak to me after we filmed a scene in which Kalki and I are arguing. I tried everything from singing songs to bringing her chocolates, but nothing worked!” PAGE 22

ROBERT ZEMECKIS
Academy Award-winning director Robert Zemeckis is the man behind iconic films like “Romancing the Stone,” the “Back to the Future” trilogy, “Forrest Gump” and “Cast Away.” Like his contemporaries Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, Zemeckis has woven himself into the annals of film history through the grandeur of his vision. Early Life: Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Robert Zemeckis was born to a Lithuanian construction worker and an Italian mother. “In my family there was no art,” he has recalled in his interviews. “There was no music, there were no books, there was no theater.” The source of his inspiration was television. “As a kid I watched everything,” he says. Zemeckis began making films with an 8mm camera while in high school. His parents were quite surprised by his sudden love of films, but of course, there was no stopping the young prodigy. He attended Northern Illinois University before transferring to the University of Southern California School of Cinema. His Films: Few directors handle visceral thrills with as much elation and control, and fewer still have pushed the threshold of visual effects as far as Zemeckis has. The award-winning director started off as a protégé of Steven Spielberg in the 1970s. Zemeckis and his writing partner Bob Gale (they were collectively known as The PVR MOVIES FIRST

Bobs) wrote several cult films which flopped during this time, including “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” and “Used Cars.” Zemeckis first hit it big in the 1980s, directing the lighthearted adventure film “Romancing the Stone.” He followed it up with “Back to the Future,” which had been rejected several times before it got the nod. Then came “Roger Rabbit.” At the end of the decade, The Bobs made sequels to “Back to the Future.”
’ve always said that movies are kind of like love affairs. Two people come together, and if they’re at the right place at the right time and it’s the right situation, it clicks. – Robert Zemeckis

DID YOU KNOW?
• Robert Zemeckis was fired by 20th Century Fox when he screened the final cut of “Romancing the Stone” (1984) for studio executives, who thought it was a disaster and destined to become Zemeckis’ third straight box office failure.
bar, with the main character starting a fight and then fleeing out into the street, followed by a complicated chase. Many other filmmakers of Robert Zemeckis’ generation have now abandoned film for TV or retirement. Zemeckis isn’t following them just yet. He made the jaw-dropping thriller “The Walk” for around $35 million. His next film, “The Women of Marwen” will be released in November 2018.
• He has preserved letters from every studio rejecting “Back to the Future” (1985) because they thought it was too soft a movie at the time. • He has produced several horror films, including “Thir13en Ghosts,” “Gothika,” “Ghost Ship” and “House of Wax.”
Starting in the 1990s, Zemeckis rose to new heights. His greatest triumph, “Forrest Gump” went on to become one of the most loved and highest grossing movies of all time. “Cast Away” too won the love of critics and audiences alike. At the turn of the millenium, Zemeckis made several animated films with the latest “performance capture” technology, directing “The Polar Express,” “Beowolf” and “A Christmas Carol.” During this time, his popularity dipped and there came a point when his studio had to be shut down. Then came “Flight,” starring Denzel Washington, his first live-action movie in 12 years. It was a critical and commercial success, and helped resurrect his career. His most recent film “Allied” starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard was released in 2016. Zemeckis’ Trademarks: Impressive visual trickery combined with human stories are signature Robert Zemeckis. From weaving live-action and 2D animation together in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” to his recent trio of motion-capture CG features, his movies are known for being at the cutting edge of special effects. • For all his love of technology, Zemeckis admits that his personal favourite ‘special effect’ is the good oldfashioned closeup. • The opening shots in his movies are often long and complex. • Zemeckis likes to use 90-degree angle shots, looking straight up at subjects from below the floor level. • Very few shots in Zemeckis movies are still. He likes to move the camera about. • In his movies, you will often see a scene in a restaurant or PVR MOVIES FIRST

HISTORY
This Month 20 Years Ago
Based on John Grisham’s 1955 novel of the same name, Francis “The Rainmaker” won acclaim as one of the top courtroom dramas of its decade. As carefully constructed, handsomely crafted and flavorsomely acted as a top-of-the-line production from Hollywood’s classical studio era, Francis Ford Coppola’s screen version of “The Rainmaker” represents the wonders a filmmaker can work with a best-selling author’s powerful work. Much of the film’s positive mood stems from its unexpected high humour, which comes from Danny DeVito, who tackles his disreputable but charming character with customary relish. His Deck Schifflet is a classic character role that stays in memory. Jon Voight makes for a super-smooth villain— the role won him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Plot: Struggling new attorney Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon) is so broke he would do anything to earn money. He starts working for a shady lawyer (Mickey Rourke), where he meets paralegal Deck Shifflet (Danny DeVito). When the insurance company of Dot Black (Mary Kay Place) refuses coverage to her dying son, Baylor and Shifflet team up to fight the corrupt corporation, taking on its callous lawyer (Jon Voight). Meanwhile, Baylor becomes involved with Kelly Riker (Claire Danes), an abused wife, whose husband complicates matters when he confronts Baylor. “The Rainmaker” won hearts because it was a story straightforwardly told, with no showy quirks. The actors breathed unexpected life into even the most modest roles. The filmmaker and the cast put a great deal of effort into developing individual performances, and the

result was a rich, lifelike texture that made the film an evergreen courtroom drama. The film’s production values were immaculate. Memphis locations in autumn created a resplendent feel echoed in Howard Cummings’ production design and John Toll’s textured wide screen camera work. Barry Malkin’s editing gave the movie a taut pace and Elmer Bernstein’s score chimed in with some lively and unexpected sounds. Fun Facts: • Francis Ford Coppola encouraged Matt Damon to stay in his character’s apartment in order to immerse himself in the role. Coppola was then able to sneak some shots of Damon waking up in the morning. • An obsessive perfectionist, Matt Damon stuffed stones inside his suit to feel uncomfortable during the desposition scenes with John Voight. • The film cast includes three Oscar winners: Matt Damon, Teresa Wright, and Jon Voight; and five Oscar nominees: Danny DeVito, Mickey Rourke, Dean Stockwell, Roy Scheider, and Virginia Madsen. • Danny DeVito wore prosthetic teeth while playing Deck Shiflett, in keeping with Coppola’s idea that the character needed a prominent, winning smile.
