We’re creative thinkers with a passion for design and a compassion for communities.

We believe that design has the power to make the world a better, more beautiful place. Perkins&Will is known and respected in the region for excellent design, project delivery, and innovation in transit-oriented development, planning, and urban design. Long-term client relationships and repeat assignments have been hallmarks of our individual and collective efforts. Research-focused and inventive, we re-imagine how space can be used to foster stronger ties between communities, the built environment, and nature. Sustainable design and the use of healthy building materials are fundamental to our process. Our 75-person office prides ourselves in our deeply rooted community of designers who have been working in the San Francisco Bay Area for 20+ years. 6

Adaptive reuse of a 1940’s-era Army warehouse into a headquarters for multiple government agencies.

← The new address — 375 Beale Street — pays tribute to Senate Bill 375, landmark 2008 state legislation that charted a path toward sustainability and dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

1 De Haro will be the first mass timber building in San Francisco to use CLT and the first multistory building of its type in California.

� At street level, roll up doors and storefronts bring light manufacturing to the street and surrounding neighborhood.

Renovation of an historic building at Pier 70 into a combined market hall and office spaces.

To adapt to projected 100-year sea-level rise and to ensure the future viability of this project, Building 12 and the adjacent Building 15 historic frame was lifted 10’-0” above current ground level.

A diverse, compact, and amenity-rich walkable district where innovators can live, work, and collaborate.

� The magnificent backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains reminds the University of Utah daily that their environment is unique, precious, and embodies the spirit of our community.

The Urban School San Francisco, California Client: The Urban School Size: 63,600 square feet Completion Date: 2015 Sustainability: LEED Gold® Awards: Outstanding Design, Facilities & Recreation Centers, American School & University, 2016

― WHAT IT IS

Innovative solutions for a high school located in the heart of San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury neighborhood.

← To fully maximize the available space, we activated the rooftop area with an outdoor turf field and additional student commons. This rooftop space also offers panoramic views of the Panhandle, Sutro Tower, and the city beyond, further reflecting the school’s place and mission within the community.

The Urban School

← Urban’s Academic and Wellness Center included seven flexible classrooms, two-level student commons, a full-sized cross court gymnasium (which can also be used as an event center), a commercial kitchen and café, and casual meeting spaces and areas for reflection.

An old Victorian house that sat in the middle of the new site was winched, fully intact, to the edge of the project site in one day. 29

A hub for cancer research that blends academic research with private-sector support.

Center for Novel Therapeutics

― WHAT MAKES IT COOL

The design fosters collaboration between users with the goal of accelerating therapies from bench to bedside.

↑ Situated in the center of the atrium is an irresistible stairway to promote active design and chance encounters.

← Situated in the heart of an academic research, healthcare and life science center ecosystem, the CNT project had to innovate beyond the traditional lab organization to create a new generation of research and collaboratively oriented lab spaces.

→ Responding to the project’s specific demands for research and collaboration, the CNT project was designed by inverting the traditional laboratory design—pushing the laboratories to the outside of the building, creating views to the campus and introducing generous amounts of daylight into the space.

Achieved through a unique collaboration between two architectural firms, the result is two distinct, yet complementary buildings that reflect a true urban block.

A mixed-use office building designed to encourage manaufacturing companies and provide office space to a variety of market sectors.

― WHAT IT IS

Core and shell project consisting of 336,661 gross square feet of office, laboratory, clinic spaces, and a 700 car parking structure.

Left and Below: Sculptures and murals were commissioned to reflect the history of Emeryville and the important work of all our tenants at the EmeryStation campus.

Left: The lobby was inspired by the clients’ desire to achieve simple elegance with natural reclaimed materials and landscape elements. Design elements that support active waiting—mobile computing and access to wireless internet—also figure prominently into the lobby.

This Area Plan will guide the transformation of the 31-acre study area into a sustainable regional mobility hub within a connected, vibrant, and walkable community. 46

With respect to Sacramento’s historic context, the network of open spaces will bring local communities and visitors together for socially inclusive events that celebrate quality lifestyle, easy access to multiple travel modes, and closer interaction with nature.

A cutting edge workplace blending an energetic social atrium with contemplative work spaces.

The almost 10,000 employees on the building’s campus are a part of something much bigger than a single workgroup or team.

↑ Light drenched bridges link two office wings and facilitate chance meetings.

→ Just as the nature of teamwork has evolved to embrace collaboration, the teaming zones are adaptable and unconstrained by conventional physical desks, computers, or files.

Two towers - one new and one renovation will provide campus housing for students and revitalize the Tenderloin neighborhood.

↑ A ribbon of transparent public spaces winds its way across the buildings via a series of windows. The transparency provides a connection between the inner workings of 198 McAllister and the public realm, ascending to show a number of study rooms before culminating at a skyline lounge and terrace.

A modern office building designed to accomodate innovative companies.


The central courtyard provides an organizational and social heart of the building.

→ 270 Brannan recreates a sense of the lost topography, stepping up off Rincon Hill by providing entrances on Brannan Street and De Boom Street.

Mixed-use office and retail building on the site of the new Golden State Warriors’s arena.

The building reflects downtown Oakland’s unique market and demographic.

↑ The lobby highlights a mural done by a local artist.

← Rooftop amenities include a pool, community garden, yoga studio, dog park, bocce ball court, and outdoor lounge.

The development will bring 2,600 new residential units, organized into multiple buildings and offered at various levels of affordability.

The Power Station once generated one-third of San Francisco’s power and delivered it to residents across the city.

Chou Hall represents a new focal point for the Haas campus and is devoted entirely to student learning and interaction, where classroom and digital learning work together to foster community.

Chou Hall is the country’s greenest academic building, having earned TRUE Zero Waste certification at the highest possible level along with a LEED Platinum certification for its energy efficient design.

Mission Rock San Francisco, California Client: San Francisco Giants Size: 28 acres Completion Date: Ongoing Awards: Urban Design Merit Award, AIA California Council, 2011; Urban Design Merit Award, AIA San Francisco, 2010

― WHAT IT IS

Mission Rock will be a new mixedused neighborhood consisting of 8 acres of new public open space, approximately 1,500 new rental homes with 40% affordable to low and middle income families, and small retail shops and cafes.

Mission Rock was an actual rock formation in San Francisco Bay, an obstacle to watercraft navigating the coastline immediately east of the site in the 1800’s.
