Winter 2019 - Prince William County Parks, Recreation & Tourism Leisure Winter Guide

Page 1

Valued Customers and Friends, Thank you for picking up a copy of Leisure Magazine—Prince William’s go-to source for finding the perfect recreation program this winter. Inside these pages, you will find an array of unique programs carefully designed to appeal to all ages and abilities. Escape the chill and come experience the warm welcome of our passionate staff who are committed to delivering you exceptional quality at a great value. Your satisfaction is our top priority! We are very excited to announce that the Historic Properties Division is moving from Public Works to the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. Together we will leverage the full potential of current historic property holdings, accelerate natural resource management and cultural land acquisition and preservation, and create cultural and recreational experiences for a more vibrant community. In an effort to respond to changing customer needs and ride the cusp of emerging trends, we are introducing new programs for you to try. Consider taking advantage our new, all-inclusive Aquatic and Fitness Center Pass Plan. Now you can enjoy two fitness centers for the price of one. Indulge in over 160 land and water group fitness classes and 14 swim lanes. We continue to invest in our parks and facilities for your comfort and safety. Accessibility improvements, new exercise equipment, field replacement, new flooring, and building system updates are but a few of the changes I hope will enhance your experience. We are also adding new parks and facilities at an impressive rate to meet the needs of a growing populace. We are grateful to our elected leaders for seeing the critical role parks, recreation, and tourism plays in creating a vibrant community and transforming lives. Please plug into the current needs assessment effort to chart Prince William County’s recreation future over the next 10 years. If you want something we’re not providing please let us know. Are we providing something we shouldn’t? We want to know that too. We will be holding a public input form this spring, and encourage you to attend. Please also consider attending a Park Commission meeting to learn what changes are happening within our Department. Meetings occur on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7pm at : George Hellwig Memorial Park, 14420 Bristow Road, Manassas, VA 20112. I wish each of you good holiday tidings and a prosperous new year. May we all emerge fitter by the reemergence of spring. I appreciate your patronage. Seth Hendler-Voss Director of Parks and Recreation Prince William County, VA (o) 703.792.4284

Our Nature Preschool at Grō will provide a supportive, safe learning environment to encourage discovery, question-asking and experimentation. Using both indoor and outdoor classrooms, our nature preschool will be filled with sensory experiences, natural objects, artifacts, trail activities and art materials so that students will have the opportunity to utilize all five senses. Our curriculum will be enhanced by the nature experience, but will also be geared to developing cognitive growth, motor skills, and problem solving through hands on learning. As we prepare your child for their Kindergarten experience, our program will also incorporate language through songs, stories and dramatic play as well as cultivate social skills and positive self image through cooperative learning and play.

By using our developmentally appropriate curriculum, our experienced and educated teachers will incorporate activities to strengthen language, literacy, fine motor and cognitive s kills. Children will become eager learners through both self-guided and teacher-led activities in our unique indoor and outdoor classroom environments. Our comprehensive, statelicensed preschool curriculum includes subject areas in math, science, motor development, social studies, language, art, music and self/social development.

Outdoor Classrooms

Our outdoor classroom will have a variety of stations for preschoolers to explore music, art, movement, gardening and the natural world around them. The outdoor classroom provides an environment for children to collaborate, be inquisitive and it promotes a lifelong connection and appreciation to the child’s natural surroundings.
