When Life Events Affect Your Benefits
By Bennett C. Whitlock III Whitlock Wealth ManagementGetting married or divorced, having or adopting a child, and retiring are significant milestones in life. These “qualified life events,” as they are commonly referred to in the insurance industry, may permit you to adjust the benefits you receive through your employer or other provider. If you’ve recently experienced a life event, review your benefits and determine if you need to make new or different elections to ensure the desired coverage for you and your family. Keep the following items in mind as you complete your review:
Act promptly. Be aware of deadlines to make your new benefit elections. Generally speaking, providers offer special enrollment for a limited timeframe during which you can update your new status or make changes in your covered dependents. If you miss the window, you may face a waiting period. In some cases, a missed deadline means you’re out of luck until the next open enrollment period or the first of the year, whichever applies to your situation.
Change health insurance coverage. Do you have enough insurance? Too much? If you’re newly married, compare the benefits offered to you and your spouse through your respective employers to see where you can get the most value. A higher deductible plan may make sense if you have two incomes, are both young and healthy, and don’t anticipate significant medical expenses. If you add children to your family, you’ll want to make sure they are included in your health insurance as dependents. If you’re retiring before you are eligible for Medicare, evaluate COBRA benefits (continued coverage under your employer’s plan), insurance through a still-employed spouse, or your options through the healthcare marketplace.
Evaluate life and disability insurance. Marriage, divorce, and the addition of children are all reasons to evaluate your life and disability insurance coverage. If your coverage is insufficient, make it a priority to obtain additional insurance. Unfortunately, many policyholders forget to remove a former spouse as a beneficiary to their policies following divorce and remarriage, which can complicate legal matters should your health be unexpectedly jeopardized. When reviewing your coverage, take time to verify that your beneficiary designations are correct.
Adjust your Health Savings Account contributions. If you have a health savings account, or HSA, and experienced a family event this year, the amount you’re allowed to contribute annually may have changed. If you added to your family through marriage or children, you could set aside more money in an HSA. If you experienced a divorce, you could split
savings accumulated in an HSA or assign the benefits to your former spouse as part of a divorce agreement. Check with your healthcare provider to learn how much you can contribute based on your situation.
Consider legal and financial advice. Some life events, such as divorce or adoption, may involve benefits decisions that have legal implications. Consider meeting with an attorney to discuss your situation and get advice on next steps. Additionally, these events may trigger numerous changes to your budget, investments, or other financial affairs. Think about meeting with a financial advisor who can help you evaluate your benefits within the broader financial picture of your life goals and retirement plans.

Fall Festivals in Prince William
By Haley HuchlerFall is the season of festivals, at least it seems so in Northern Virginia. While summer is too suffocatingly hot and winter too bitterly cold, fall is the perfect, mild-weathered time of year for an outdoor celebration. The crisp, newly cool air is the ideal backdrop for events filled with cozy, warm drinks and tasty snacks, where communities can rally and bond over fun events and gatherings. It’s no wonder why the region is bursting with activity at this time of year. Our feature story is proof there are no shortages of exciting fall events and traditions to take part in, but here is a deeper dive into a few of the major fall festivals our community can savor this season.
Prince William County Hot Air Balloon Festival
It’s not a bird, it’s not a plane. It’s a hot air balloon. The Prince William County Hot Air Balloon Festival returns to the Prince William County Fairgrounds this October. On Oct. 15 and 16, the gates will open at 3 p.m. for visitors to get their chance to ride in a balloon-powered basket in the sky. It’s a bucket-list event you won’t want to miss.
Hot air balloons won’t be the only treat at the festival for visitors to enjoy. The Kids Zone will feature games and rides, including trains, bounce houses, rock walls, and a zip line. A DJ and live music performances from a variety of artists will provide the soundtrack for the day. Craft and retail vendor booths are the perfect way to shop and support local businesses. And of course, plenty of food vendors will be available with many different options of cuisine. But the hot air balloons are the clear stars of the show, so make sure to sign-up for a ride that you’ll remember forever.
Stay for the Grand Finale after 8 p.m. and experience the hot air balloon glow and laser show, where visitors will witness all the balloons lit up in unison and set to music. Bring your blankets and chairs to claim your own viewing spot!
The Prince William County Fairgrounds are located at 10624 Dumfries Road in Manassas. Tickets are available at freshtix. com/events/princeballoons.
Haymarket Day
It’s the town of Haymarket’s biggest event of the year — don't miss out! The Haymarket Day parade is the epitome of smalltown parade perfection and this year will feature a spooktacular theme. Come line the streets to see local schools, marching bands, fire trucks, cars, performers of all kinds, and law enforcement pass you by, all led by the year’s Grand Marshal.
But that’s not all the day has in store for visitors. Haymarket Day features dozens of vendors and entertainers, as well as culinary options galore. Enjoy performances on two stages with beer gardens located near each one.
In its 33rd year, this event is a well-oiled machine poised to present a fantastic time for everyone. Over 25,000 spectators and 200 vendors will be there for this day of joyful community celebration. To be one of them, arrive for the start of the parade at 10 a.m. down Washington Street. Parking is available at the VDOT Commuter Lot at Heathcote and 15 and at Tyler Elementary. Both locations will have a free shuttle service until 5 pm.
Spirits and Spirits Halloween Celebration
Occoquan is home to the annual Arts and Crafts Show that draws in 10,000 visitors yearly, so it’s no surprise the town also knows how to put on a fantastic Halloween celebration. It’s the place to be Oct. 28-30.
Promising a “spooky, scary” time, Spirits and Spirits encompasses a range of activities like a trivia night, a haunted maze, a costume parade, and more. Adults can enjoy the dive bar serving up dance music, firepits, and special spooky spirits. Come out for a Halloween-themed movie showing (PG-13) and the opportunity to vote for the best decorations, jack-o-lanterns, and costumes at businesses around town. Top it all off with a ghost tour sure to shock your socks off, as Occoquan claims that almost every home, pub, and business in town is home to at least one non-living resident. Occoquan is a town that truly does know how to get into the festive spirit.
Barktober Fall Pet Festival
Looking for a fun way to celebrate the season with your pet? Join A Pup’s Valley for their 4th annual Barktober Fall Pet Festival—a festival for their two- and four-legged friends. Sentara Offers ‘Safe Haven’ for Patients Dealing with Cancer
Sponsored by Sentara Northern Virginia Medical CenterFor many Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center patients, the Sentara Cancer Network Resource Center helps provide peace of mind throughout their cancer journey. And peace of mind is a key ingredient in healing.
“The Sentara Cancer Resource Center is a place that’s built around the patient’s needs,” said Deana Henry, RN, OCN, CHPN, Oncology Nurse Navigator. “Particularly the patient and their loved ones who are going through a cancer diagnosis and treatment. It’s a place for them to come to receive education and support, and sometimes just to rest between appointments in a place that doesn’t look like a doctor’s office.”
A Multitude of Services
Deana HenryOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The center treats people and their families holistically, not just their diagnosis.
“The Sentara Cancer Resource Center is a hub of activity,” said Heather Byrne, MSN, RN, Breast Cancer Oncology Nurse Navigator. “We have yoga classes for patients in active treatment for their cancer. We have support groups that meet there. We have conferences there. We have access to supplies and equipment that might be needed specifically by our cancer patients.”
Dealing with paperwork is another aspect of cancer the center helps patients tackle.
“We have computers and a fax machine for patients to access as they’re trying to navigate some of the paperwork that’s necessary,” said Byrne, who has been a nurse for 36 years and has been working at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center since 2010.
All at No Cost to Patients
The center, which opened in 2019, was built through grant funding from the Potomac Health Foundation.
Check out these resources for screening tips, information, and support.
Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation
VBCF’s goals are to establish the end of breast cancer as a state and national priority, to advocate for the collective needs of people affected by breast cancer, and to educate all Virginians on the facts about breast cancer. Visit vbcy.org for more information.
INOVA Life with Cancer Program
This program offers a variety of programs and services for patients, survivors, and their family members to help individuals cope with cancer, its treatments, and survivorship in the best possible way. Programs are open to anyone receiving cancer treatment, regardless of where treatment is being received and includes counseling; mindfulness, tai chi, and yoga classes; and more. Visit lifewithcancer.org for a class listings and counseling support information.
American Cancer Society
Visit cancer.org for information, research findings, support resources and more to support cancer patients and their families.
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
The closest chapter is located in Richmond, but the website and hotlines can support you from anywhere. Find self-screening information, financial assistance, a helpline staffed by social workers, clinical trials, and support for caregivers. Visit komen.org to access these resources.
“There is no cost for any of these services,” said Byrne. “Consulting with a navigator, attending classes, using the computer and the fax — those are all part of the service that Sentara offers, as people go through this experience. There’s enough on their plate already, and you need someone to help you get through those steps. That’s what we do.”
“We like to think of our center as a safe haven for them to come between appointments, to seek support, education, and somewhere to just rest their weary bones for a little while,” said Henry.
“Sentara Cancer Network Resource Center is a little slice of heaven,” said Byrne. “For me, and for our patients.”
The Sentara Cancer Network Resource Center is located in the Century Medical Building on the campus of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge. Ideas for Family Fun This Spooky Season
By Jennifer HalterWhether you love all things spooky or if you’re just in it for the treats, there’s so much fun to be had at Halloween. Not everyone is a fan of monsters or horror movies, but that doesn’t mean they have to miss out on enjoying this time of year. Here’s a roundup of not-so-scary things you can try with your family this month.
Halloween Movie Night
Not all Halloween movies are created equal, and if horror and gore are not your thing, there are family friendly options that won’t bring on nightmares. Try:
Hocus Pocus (1993, Rated PG)
Spookley the Square Pumpkin (2004, Not Rated)
Halloweentown (1998, Not Rated)
Double, Double Toil and Trouble (1993, Rated TV-Y7)
The Little Vampire (2000, Rated PG)
ParaNorman (2012, Rated PG)
Coraline (2009, Rated PG)
Toy Story of Terror! (2013, Not Rated)
Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie (2005, Rated G)
Hotel Transylvania (2012, Rated PG)
Make your movie night complete with your favorite snacks. Create your own “Monster Munch” made with popcorn and add-ins, such as chocolate candy, peanuts, pretzels, marshmallows, or candy corn. Top it off with a glass of “Witches Brew” punch. To make this, combine 1 quart of lime sherbet, 1 2-liter bottle of chilled ginger ale, a chilled 46 oz. can of unsweetened pineapple juice, and ¼ cup of lime juice. If you want to make this punch a more vibrant green color, you can add in a few drops of green food coloring.
Halloween Science Lab
Let your little one become the mad scientist and have fun exploring with Halloween themed STEM activities in the kitchen.
Try your hand at making slime, but give it a fun name such as “Ghost Slime,” “Monster Boogers,” or “Witches Blood” and make your slime different colors according to the name you’ve given it. For example, maybe your “Witches Blood” is purple slime with glitter mixed in, and your “Monster Boogers” is green with plastic spiders. The
possibilities are endless and all easy to create with this basic slime recipe:
½ cup of school glue
½ cup of water
½ tsp of baking soda
1 tbsp saline solution
Optional: food coloring and add-ins, such as glitter, beads, plastic spiders, or other themed items
Combine glue and water in a bowl. Next, add any glitter or other items into the mixture and stir. Add in baking soda and stir to combine. Finally, add in the saline solution, and mix until you get the slime consistency you desire. You may need to add more saline solution if your slime is too sticky.
Another science experiment your kids can try is to see how their favorite candy reacts when being placed in different liquids. To begin, fill five clear plastic cups with equal amounts of liquids. Try cold water, hot water, vinegar, oil, and seltzer water or a clear soda. You can use candy such as marshmallow peep candy, candy-coated chocolates, and candy corn or pumpkins. Have your child place a candy in each liquid, see what happens, and make note of their observations. Some will sink, some will float, and some may dissolve and disappear.
With both of these STEM activities, parental supervision is strongly advised.
Pumpkin Decorating Contest
Carving pumpkins is a fun traditional Halloween activity, but you can step up your decorating game by hosting your own pumpkin decorating contest. Do this with your own family or invite friends, classmates, and neighbors to join in on the fun. To make this activity fun for all, expand on your creativity by using other items to decorate your pumpkin, such as paint, feathers, gems, and more. You can even make special themes, such as choose your favorite book character, food, or superhero, and design your pumpkin to match that theme.
Halloween Sensory Play
Sensory play is fun for the younger ones at any time during the year, but there are lots of great ideas you can use to create your own Halloween sensory bin for hours of play. Start with a base, such as black beans or rice that has been dyed black and/or orange. Place your base in a plastic container, preferably with a lid so you can store your bin for future play. Add in items such as googly eyes, plastic spiders, or pumpkins and bones (check your dollar store for these items). Give your child scoops, bowls, funnels, and strainers, and let them dig and explore. Parental supervision is strongly advised as some items could be choking hazards for younger children.
Have a safe, and Happy Halloween full of fun with your family!

SPECTACULAR SPREADS
By Rebecca BarnesYou may have seen photos of charcuterie's impressive displays on Pinterest or in magazines and thought, "What IS a charcuterie (shar-koo-tuh-ree) board?" It's basically an antipasto plate taken a step further. Served on a wooden board or a stone slab, these creations could serve as an appetizer or a whole meal, as it's filled with cured meats, an assortment of cheese, crackers, bread, fruits, vegetables, spreads, and nuts. Whether simple in design or more artistically complex, charcuterie boards bring people together in an easy yet elegant way.
A more sophisticated Lunchable™ for adults, these boards are perfect for summer dining, as they don't heat up the house. There's no cooking involved, just assembly, which can be as simple or complex as you like. For a balanced taste experience, try something sweet, savory, salty, and spicy on your board, and you can't go wrong!
Meat
Cooked and cured meats top the list of must-have items for a charcuterie board. Prosciutto, Genoa salami, pepperoni, summer sausage, and chorizo work well with cheeses and can be displayed in exciting shapes and presentations. In addition, some great plant-based “meats” are on the market, if you or a guest don't eat meat.
Cheese
Use a variety of soft and hard cheeses, including spreads (Be sure to include a spreading knife on the board!), and cut the hard
cheeses into small, bite-sized pieces. Think about what pairs well with the meats you have chosen. Some popular cheeses include brie, Havarti, mozzarella balls, gouda, and cheddar. Spreads like port wine cheddar, cream cheese spreads, and fresh ricotta are amazing additions. There are vegan options too, for those who can't do cheese.
Crackers and Breads
You can pick an assortment of interesting breads and crackers or stick with more neutral options and let the meats and cheeses be the stars. Ritz, water crackers, Triscuits, French bread, or artisan crackers will make your board feel rich with texture and choices.
Vegetables
Pickled, roasted, or raw, you can select what is in season from your local farmer's markets or simply from the grocery store aisle. Carrots, cherry tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers are a few popular choices. Olives and pickles are great additions and come in wide varieties, allowing for something for every palate.
Fruits
Fresh or dried, fruits add color and sweetness to any board. Blueberries, strawberries, dried apricots, and craisins add texture and flavor and help fill in space. Grapes on the vine — green, red, or purple — add to the beauty of your board and are the perfect complement to almost everything.
Dips, Spreads, and Tapenades
Cheese spreads, honey, jellies, jams, and preserves — the choices are endless. Ranch dips, hummus, brown mustard, tapenades, and pestos are great accompaniments you can make from scratch or purchase at the grocery store.
Nuts and Extras
Pistachios, almonds, walnuts, cashews, and pecans are great for boards and can be served from bowls with small spoons. Dark chocolate, Pretzels, both plain and chocolate-covered, along with caramel popcorn, add a spark of sweetness while not competing with the fruit you have chosen.
Wine Pairing
Since the choices for charcuterie boards are nearly endless, your options for wine pairings can get slightly complicated. Most wine experts will tell you to match your vino selection to your meats.
If your charcuterie board is solely cheese, fruits, and spreads, then pair with your cheeses. A quick search on Google or Pinterest is your best bet for wine choices to match your personal charcuterie creation.
Boards, Platters, and Supplies
While charcuterie is best known for being displayed on wooden cutting boards, you can be as creative as you like. Here is a list of suggested supplies to start your creation:
• Cutting boards, stone slabs, or serving trays
• Butcher block or wax paper
• Wood skewers and toothpicks
• Small bowls and cups
• Unique and interesting kitchen containers
Putting It All Together
It can feel a little intimidating staring at the blank board, but just dive in. You’ll get in a groove before you know it. Start with your meats – try to have at
least three. Lay them out in three spots on the board with space between. Next, start filling in those spaces with three or four cheese options. Then, fill in the remaining spaces with your fruits, savories and spreads, keeping like items together. Crackers can go in a basket nearby, around the edges, or in a large open space. It’s entirely up to you and depends on the space you’re working with. There really is no wrong way to do it!
Creating Visual Appeal with Levels, Texture, and Color
Your presentation can be as simple as a paper plate to as elaborate as a whole table or kitchen island. Create dramatic heights, using petit four stands, cake stands, serving trays, and bowls of different sizes. You can even get "word dishes," which are letters that can be filled with smaller foods like candies or nuts and spell out whatever you like. For outdoor events, think about plastic containers, paper cupcake liners, and butcherblock or wax paper. Use the items you choose to create depth points of interest and pops of color. Pinterest has thousands of examples. YouTube even has videos to show you how to make roses from smoked meat and flowers from vegetables. Start at a level you feel comfortable with and work your way up. The point is to savor something different for your meal while enjoying the company you keep. We would love to see what you create! Car Care Tips for Beginners: A Little Goes a Long Way
By Wendy MigdalHaving maintenance done on your car should be added to the list of life’s certainties, along with death and taxes. If you’re one of those few people out there who still keep a notebook in the glove compartment and faithfully record the mileage each and every time you fill up, you probably don’t need any tips. The rest of us, however, could probably use some reminders from time to time.
Advice From the Trenches
We all know about the maintenance schedules, but to get a perspective from the front lines, Prince William Living magazine asked some locals to give us some of their top pieces of advice for keeping your car in good shape and avoiding problems. John Filippone of Piedmont Tire and Auto offered a few tips.
The first thing he recommends is to walk around your car and examine it, every time, before you get in. “That’s something that nobody does, that everybody should do, and especially new drivers. A lot of things could be prevented by just walking around the car,” says Filippone.
Some people may have gotten out of the habit of doing this important step now that rear-facing cameras eliminate the safety issue of accidentally driving over a child or an animal, but it’s still important from a maintenance perspective. Drivers can spot problems with a tire, a piece of trim that’s coming off, and any damage that’s occurred.
Next, Filippone recommends checking your air pressure. Although new cars have tire monitoring systems, older cars don’t, and they’re also not something that people tend to replace when the sensors stop working. Filippone says they see a lot of blown-out tires from low pressure.
His third tip is to make sure you know how to properly check your oil level. “I can’t tell you how many times people come in and say, ‘My oil light came on so I just put in three quarts of oil,’ which just makes the problem worse. You can do all kinds of damage to your engine by putting too much oil in,’” says Filippone.
Resources for Information
Your car’s manual, of course, is the best place to look for maintenance schedules. If it’s still under warranty, you’ll need to follow those schedules and keep good records in order to keep your warranty valid. But outside of that, knowing when things need to be replaced can be difficult since individual usage varies greatly. Several local automotive repair shops, including Piedmont, G&C Tire and Auto Service, and Stan Rollinson’s Automotive have detailed information on their websites that can help you decide if it’s time to get something replaced. So, don’t overlook your favorite mechanic’s website as a source.
The Prince William Public Library offers two services on automotive care through their Digital Library that patrons may not be aware of. ChiltonLibrary.com is a digital resource that is available for anyone to use from home. Chilton published its first automobile journal in 1911, and for years they have been the go-to guides for DIY auto mechanics. Now, of course, they’ve gone online.
If you don’t have a library card, you can register instantly online, then put in your card number. Next, enter your year,
make, and model, and Chilton will hook you up with a host of information about your vehicle — from maintenance schedules to bulletins and recalls and even diagrams of your vehicle’s specific parts. There’s a video library with short videos that explain how parts of the car work, how to spot problems, and information on how to repair them. Some of these assume some prior knowledge, so a total beginner might need additional help.
The second service offered by the library is ProDemand. com, which contains wiring diagrams, a parts guide, and tech bulletins and recalls. Due to licensing restrictions, you’ll need to visit a branch to use that one.
Of course, there’s always YouTube, but for a more vetted online course for total beginners, there are several at Udemy. com for less than $20. These will go over the basics, such as how to check fluids, change the oil, fix a flat, and more.
Hands-On Instruction
Some of us may need a little help telling our windshield washer reservoir from our radiators. It’s pretty difficult to locate hands-on instruction these days; that is, if you don’t want to become a mechanic. One overlooked option is your local auto parts store. No, they don’t offer Saturday morning demonstrations like Home Depot, unfortunately, but they will come out to the car and help you with a few basics, such as replacing windshield wipers, lightbulbs, and batteries. They’re limited for liability reasons on what they can touch on your
car, but they can talk you through it, which is the best way to learn. Learning a few basics like these can save money too, such as when a $5 light bulb that you found out about during your annual inspection ends up costing $30 to have installed at a shop.
Learning a few basics of auto maintenance will help you become a more attentive car owner. It can also be a source of pride and satisfaction to feel a bit of mastery over the unknown.

Fill Your Home with Comforting Color
Courtesy of Family Features
In the world of design, what’s old inevitably becomes new again, and a similar pattern is inspiring today’s on-trend color palettes for home decor. The latest styles reflect reviving and comforting colors influenced by heritage and romance, lending to a look that is familiar in an individualistic way.
Whether living through the romance of rural lifestyles, the comfort of home or the nostalgia from far-off times, some of today’s most beloved design aesthetics celebrate the past, present, and future while bringing balance, hope, and comfort for you and your family to embrace.
Timeless Color
Using color to evoke feelings and emotions is hardly new, but combining a carefully curated color palette with other design elements can allow you to create a look that pays homage to the past while breathing new life into your living space.
Reimagining classic, familiar tones allows you to achieve a design motif that is equal parts reminiscent and refreshing.
“The Vintage Homestead Color Collection offers an effortless look that reveals the importance of being hopeful to find stability and balance,” said Ashley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. “Our 2023 Color Collection of the Year revives elements from the past that are perfectly paired with vintage, comfortable and classic colors.”
Blending Past and Present
Striking a balance between old and new can take many forms, as these styles show:
n Heritage Revival: An interest in reviving the past is evident in design trends like a remerging appreciation of antiques and vintage elements, such oversized furniture and traditional shapes. To capture this style, your design should focus on contrasting old and new for a mix-and-match look.
A cohesive color scheme can allow the various elements to stand on their own while working in harmony for an intentional design. For example, the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color Collection of the Year includes a combination of familiar tones that have been thoughtfully curated by design experts who borrow color and design concepts from the past for a hopeful future and a sense of belonging. Hues like Poetry Plum and Hot Cocoa evoke warmth and depth, while moderate shades like Restrained Gold and Glamour offer fresh ways to incorporate mid-range neutrals. Meanwhile, soft tones like Natural Linen and Cool Beige offer subtle color for lighter, brighter spaces.
n Mixing and Matching of Eras: A new take on retro design is emerging in which eras are blended and new and old
furnishing work side by side. To get this look, you’ll craft a space that marries historical and contemporary design, celebrating both old and new. To design for longevity, incorporate pieces that are ambiguous in era and stand the test of time.
n Vintage Homestead: Reviving design elements from the past with mixed patterns, classic shapes and vintage decor adds up to comfortable and comforting design. With this trend, prints and patterns encompass a range of styles, reinforcing how interiors connect to fashion. Mixing classic elegance with sleek vintage shapes is refining the concept of polished comfort. To achieve the look, curate pieces in heritage shapes and patterns, along with retro accents. Be sure to incorporate vintage lighting and glass, as well.
A versatile color choice like Darkroom, the 2023 Color of the Year from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, is an alluring shade that is classic enough for heritage interiors but also modernly retro for a throwback-inspired aesthetic. It’s a neutral perfect for creating an eclectic yet modern look inside and out.
