You Can Save More for Retirement in 2024

As an investor, one way you can enhance your long-term retirement security is to fully leverage the potential of tax-advantaged retirement savings vehicles. Each year, the IRS releases new guidelines on the amount of money you can contribute to these accounts. New contribution limits in 2024 allow you to save even more this year through plans such as 401(k)s, 403(b)s and IRAs.

Changes to workplace savings limits

Contribution limits for workplace retirement accounts have been raised by $500 for the year 2024. In 2024, the IRS allows pre-tax employee contributions to 401(k) or 403(b) plans of:

n $23,000 for those under age 50

n $30,500 for those age 50 and older (includes a $7,500 “catch up” contribution).

When combined with employer contributions, a maximum of $69,000 can be directed to your workplace retirement plans in 2024 (plus the $7,500 catch-up contribution for those age 50 and older). Note that total contributions can’t exceed your annual compensation at the company that houses your plan.

If offered by your employer, you may be able to make aftertax contributions to a Roth 401(k). Note that any after-tax contributions are counted toward the $69,000 total maximum limit for employee and employer contributions to workplace plans. Save an amount that makes sense for you, but it can be beneficial to take full advantage of any matching contribution offered by your employer. For example, if an employer offers to match up to 5% of your income into a 401(k) if you make a similar contribution, it, in effect, means you’re doubling your contribution for your retirement savings, before investment earnings are taken into account. This is a great way for your savings to make a big impact.

New IRA contribution limits

IRA contribution limits move up periodically to reflect cost-ofliving changes. 2024 is one of those years. The new limits are:

n $7,000 for those under age 50

n $8,000 for those age 50 and older.

Note that contributions can’t exceed 100% of your earned income if you earn less than the limits stated above. Also, these limits apply to total IRA contributions for the year. This is applicable even if you hold multiple IRAs or make contributions to both Roth IRAs (which feature the potential for tax-free earnings growth) and traditional IRAs.

To make fully tax-deductible (pre-tax) traditional IRA contributions in 2024, your modified adjusted gross income cannot exceed:

n $77,000 for single or head-of-household tax filers

n $123,000 for married couples filing a joint return.

Not everyone can make maximum Roth IRA contributions. In 2024, full Roth IRA contributions can only occur if your modified adjusted gross income is less than:

n $146,000 for single or head-of-household tax filers

n $230,000 for married couples filing a joint return.

Save diligently, plan wisely

Determining how much to set aside for retirement and in what types of savings vehicles is best determined through careful planning. The start of a new year is a great time to consider if you want to change or start contributions to these types of accounts. Discuss your retirement strategy with your financial advisor and consult with a tax professional on all tax-related matters.

Count Me In Scholarship

The Count Me In Scholarship was a vision in 2020, but was officially started by the Prince William County Parks Foundation in 2021. To date, the foundation has awarded 191 scholarships at $200.00 each. The foundation also raises money, outside the scholarship program, to bring park programs to Title 1 schools such as Science in the Park and Hands on History to K-6 school-aged students, based on the Virginia Standards of Learning Science and History.

Science in the Park Program

This program offers hands-on science lessons to K-6 grade students. Children participate in activities that may be chosen by teachers to enrich what is being taught in their classrooms.

The Science in the Park locations include Lake Ridge Park, Silver Lake Park and Locust Shade Park. Some examples of the program topics are:

n habitat trail hikes

n aquatic ecosystems

n water health

Recently the foundation has begun to use funds for Science in the Park Onsite for special education students who cannot travel to the various parks. Since it began, 650 students have learned from Science in the Park programs.

In this post-pandemic era, the collaboration and partnership with Prince William Title 1 Schools were fundamental to the recovery efforts of students and the enrichment of valuable science content.

Hands on History Program

This program offers students interactive and hands-on, placebased opportunities to learn about history first hand. All programs satisfy the Virginia Standards of Learning History. These studies are conducted at:

n Rippon Lodge – Colonial Life

n Brentsville Courthouse Historic Center – Life on a 19th Century farm, going to a one-room school, and Order in the Court

n Ben Lomond Historic Site -Enslaved Life in Virginia, Civil War Medicine

Qualifications

Prince William County residents who qualify for the scholarships are able to apply for financial help to reduce or totally alleviate the barriers into the program. These qualifications only apply to the Count Me In scholarship programs. Science in the Park and Hands On History are directly coordinated with Title 1 Schools. The qualifications process for individual students does not apply.

The scholarships are designed to aid families with children who would not be able to go to camp or attend a special program for their age group due to financial hardships.

Scholarships are available to the children of families who qualify for them based on the Federal Poverty Guidelines (at or below 130% of poverty level). If approved, a scholarship in the amount of $200.00 will be allotted to each child who falls within the age requirements. The total number of scholarships is limited and awarded on a first-come-first-served basis. Each child can spend that amount on one or multiple programs, and costs for the programs vary. You may apply for these scholarships online, through the mail, or in person. Before applying, have the following handy:

n A receipt from your most recent tax return (each child applying must be listed)

n letter of free lunch for each child provided by Prince William County Schools Free Lunch Program is accepted, a letter for free lunch given by the school will not be accepted

n letter must list individual dependents qualifying for the scholarship

n A copy of your SNAP Approval Letter. You may obtain one at https://commonwealth.virginia.gov/access/

n You must have each of these documents for each child turned in before the application deadline in order to receive a scholarship.

n Incomplete applications are not accepted.

It should be noted that the Hylton Foundation along with several other organizations and individuals have contributed over $100,000.00 to this endeavor. The foundation asks that the community continue to support this program, so they may award several hundred of the scholarships per year.

Unfortunately, the registration process for summer 2024 closed on February 2. All scholarships are in the process of being awarded. There will be at least two registration periods announced for summer 2025.

Carolyn has been a successful artist and writer for many years. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Media/Computer Education from Appalachian State University. She lives happily with her husband and cat.

Maintain Your Clear Vision for a Bright Future

Healthy Vision Month, observed annually in May, serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining good eye health and taking proactive steps to protect our vision. This month-long observance aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular eye exams, early detection of eye conditions, and adopting healthy habits to preserve vision.

It’s easy to take our vision for granted sometimes. Healthy Vision Month serves as a gentle nudge to actively prioritize our eye health. Regular eye exams are at the top of the list when it comes to preventive eye care. Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration, often develop without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Routine eye exams can help detect these conditions early, when treatment is most effective, and prevent potential vision loss. During Healthy Vision Month, schedule a comprehensive eye exam with an eye care professional, if it’s been more than a year since your last exam or if you are experiencing changes in your vision.

In addition to regular eye exams, adopting healthy habits can significantly impact eye health. Proper nutrition plays a critical role in maintaining healthy vision. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids can help protect against age-related eye conditions and promote overall eye health. Similarly, staying hydrated, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking can reduce the risk of eye diseases and preserve vision.

Protecting our eyes from harmful UV rays is a key protective factor. Prolonged exposure can increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye conditions. Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays whenever outdoors, even on cloudy days.

Screen time has become an integral part of our days, but excessive use of digital devices can cause eye strain. Avoiding screens is nearly impossible, so try practicing the 20-2020 rule: take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to stare at something 20 feet away. Additionally, adjusting screen brightness and using blue light-blocking glasses or screen filters can alleviate eye strain.

Pencil this annual observance into your calendars and plan to celebrate Healthy Vision Month each May. Give your eyes the celebratory gifts of an annual eye exam, a fresh new pair of blue light blockers, and a few extra helpings of veggies throughout the month.

Erin Pittman is Editor in Chief of Prince William Living. She requires reading glasses to see the page in front of her clearly these days but is grateful for her husband, three children, and snuggly pets that fill her wider field of vision each day.

Summer Planning Made Easy

Summer is just around the corner and it’s the perfect time to start making plans for your children and family to keep everyone busy and having fun! Here are ways to make your summer planning easy and full of great experiences.

Summer Camps

There are a variety of summer camps in our area that are suitable for all ages, interests, and budgets. From music to sports to art, you can find camps through local businesses, churches or Parks and Recreation.

If summer camps outside of the home aren’t in your plans, create your own at home! You can do this just with members of your household or make it a little larger and invite friends to join in on the fun. First, decide the theme of your camp. Once you choose a theme, then you can start finding activities that fit. Consider games, crafts, music or even snacks that match your theme. One idea for an easy camp to do at home would be an art camp where you would collect a variety of supplies to create some masterpieces. Another could be a cooking camp where you would prepare fun new recipes. Rainy day? Have a movie camp where you transform your living room into a movie theater and watch your favorites, complete with popcorn and snacks.

Head to the Library

The local library system offers many free opportunities to fill your summer days with entertainment. Add a weekly library visit to your schedule to give children an opportunity to read on-site or borrow books, DVDs, etc. to bring home. There are also a variety of special programs throughout the summer months at most branches. Additionally, children can participate in summer reading programs to earn special rewards for tracking their books.

Plan a Picnic

Picnics aren’t just for lunch! Plan a picnic for breakfast or dinner to change things up and to beat the midday summer heat. You can picnic at a local park or keep it simple and head to your backyard. To add to the experience, you can choose a theme for your picnic, such as choosing cuisine from other countries or recreating meals from your favorite movies or books. Not a fan of eating outdoors? Set up a picnic in your living room!

Water Fun

Even if you don’t have your swimming pool at home, there are still many opportunities for your family to have fun in the water this summer. There are two local water

16 | May 2024 prince william living

parks in Prince William and Manassas, as well as several community pools that are available for use for a fee. You can also utilize sprinklers, hoses, and kiddie pools at home.

Catch a Movie

Some local movie theaters offer low-cost film days during the summer where either ticket prices or concessions (or both!) are offered at a reduced rate. The movies are often suited for children and families and are not typically new releases. Other venues that offer summer movies for free or cheap include churches, libraries, and even parks.

Take a Day Trip

If a long summer vacation isn’t in your plans, you can still fill your days with new experiences by going on short local trips. Make a day of it at the beach. Head to the zoo or a farm to see animals. Check out a museum. Explore a new park. Get the whole family involved with planning where you will be going on your day trips. Allow each family member to choose an experience and share their interests.

Summer Festivals and Concerts

Now is the time to plan to attend one (or several) summer festivals or concerts that take place locally. Most are free to attend and include a wide variety of vendors, activities, and food for purchase to try. Some venues offer free concerts featuring local entertainers during the summer months. If your child’s favorite performing artist will be in the area, treat him or her to a concert date night that they won’t soon forget!

Summer plans are not one size fits all, so one way to make them your own and keep them organized is to use a daily guide. One example would be:

Make Something Monday – Choose to make a craft, a new recipe or use this time to learn a new skill, such as sewing. Keep a journal of what you create so you can review at the end of the summer.

Take a Trip Tuesday – Today is the day to get out of the house! Use the day trip suggestions listed above for ideas.

Water Day Wednesday – This can be the day you head to the pool or participate in one of the water fun activities suggested above. You can also look for STEM activities using water to do on this day.

Thinking Thursday – It’s important to do activities to help beat the summer slide and continue learning. Dedicate this day to activities such as reading books, science experiments, or writing.

Fun Friday – Hopefully, every day this summer is full of fun, but on Fridays, let the kids decide what they would like to do individually or as a family. Some may want to head out for activities, but others may choose to stay home and watch their favorite movie. The possibilities are endless!

Mi Tierra Deli A Taste of Community

The power of food is powerful indeed. A taste of something familiar can instantly bring back happy memories of family and home. The comfort behind this is not to be denied, especially if someone is far away from everything they know.

Anyone who has moved to a brand new place realizes that cooking — or even sniffing — a big pot of something they grew up eating creates an instant feel of the familiar within the unfamiliar.

Mi Tierra Deli strives to be a place where transplants from Central America can come and get a small taste of home. Eating familiar dishes is something that can go a long way in helping with the daunting journey of building a new life in a new place.

And for those who have always known Prince William as home, Mi Tierra Deli offers up authentic Central American cuisine deeply rooted in culture and family recipes.

Family Ties

Abner Najarro says the start of the family business wasn’t food related at all.

Alongside his brother and father, the family started a construction business that focused on drywall. But food was ingrained, and the Najarros grew up enjoying homemade cooking.

“We all love to cook, it’s a family thing,” Najarro said.

Najarro and his brother liked the idea of doing a restaurant, so with a lot of hard work and after saving up some money, they started the first Mi Tierra Deli location in Alexandria about two decades ago.

They saw a need in the community for a place to come and get familiar Central American cuisine, meet with familiar people, and have a sense of home.

“There are a lot of people in this area who come here by themselves from Central America,” Najarro said. “Over 60% of our customers are immigrants and here on their own for work. They’re missing their own food. At Mi Tierra Deli, they can get it.”

Initially, the Alexandria location was a grocery store selling Latin American products, like fruits, vegetables, and spices, with a

18 | May 2024 prince william living

small area for takeout. Now, the family has flipped the business, so it’s more of a dining establishment with a smaller section for groceries. It turned out to be a good move, as Mi Tierra Deli grew so much it expanded to four total locations — the flagship Alexandria location, Woodbridge, Manassas, and Fredericksburg.

Whether customers decide to visit one of the Prince William spots in Manassas and Woodbridge, or venture to another family-owned and operated Mi Tierra Deli location, they’ll experience the same food, friendliness, and flavors.

“Since we opened, our sales have been going up every year. We get packed, and do a lot of carryout,” he said. “People like it.”

It’s in the Food

Pupusas (a type of stuffed corn griddle cake), carne asada (marinated and grilled steak), tacos, and all day breakfast are just a few items Mi Tierra Deli offers.

Customers can also take part in the currently trendy quesabirria tacos, a sort of cross between a quesadilla and braised beef taco, which have dominated the TikTok food scene in recent months.

“We just started selling the quesabirria tacos,” Najarro said. “Along with the carne asada, those are our two most popular items.”

One of Najarro’s favorite dishes on the menu is the Pollo en

Crema, chicken with a spiced, creamy sauce and served with rice, salad, and tortillas.

“My mom made pollo en crema while I was growing up and this is one thing I can always have,” Najarro said.

Mi Tierra Deli is a fast casual establishment, with options to eat in, carry out, or have delivery. There is also a small bar offering pina coladas, margaritas, and choice tequilas. The bar drinks are a recent offering that Najarro sees to expand on in the future, with more alcohol selections. But with a range of soft drinks choices, Mexican sodas, and beers, customers still have plenty to choose from.

Mi Tierra Deli in Woodbridge is open Sunday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. It is located at 14120 Jefferson Davis Highway.

The Manassas location at 7422 Old Centreville Road is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

CASTAWAYS THEATRE Reflects on Performances of SHOAH While Preparing for

More Productions

There is a distinct challenge in creating artistic works about real-life atrocities and tragedies that includes reverence, grief and authentic portrayal. Castaways Theatre undertook this challenge when putting on their performances of SHOAH, a production about the Holocaust based on the Lanzmann documentary of the same title. “Shoah” is another word for the Holocaust and means catastrophic upheaval. After intense work and moving performances of the production, Castaways Theatre prepares for more productions in 2024 and 2025.

What is Castaways Theatre?

Castaways Theatre is a nonprofit, fully volunteer-based performance group out of Woodbridge. Originating in 1981 as Castaways Repertory Theatre, they performed at various schools around the area until finding a home at the Ferlazzo Building. Now, they put on plays, musicals, and theatrical readings for the local community. Their mission is to offer quality live performances, educate volunteers about the theater and audiences through productions and tours, encourage participation in the theater, and enlighten the community on various topics.

Creating SHOAH

Castaways Artistic Director Dr. Harry Kantrovich has always carried a determination to prevent atrocities such as the

Holocaust from occurring again. He has relatives who lived through the Holocaust, and he has visited five concentration camps and prayed and cried at all of them. He was first introduced to the story of SHOAH in 1986 when he watched the documentary. What struck him most was the look in the eyes of survivors as they discussed their experiences and losses. He describes the look as empty pools stripped of life. This deeply impacted him and his understanding of the Holocaust.

In 2018, Dr. Kantrovich decided he wanted to direct a production of SHOAH for live theater. Upon finding there was no script, he resolved to create one. He began researching the film script and book, as well as contacting museums, copyright and licensing houses, and film and television studios. Through this research, he contacted Dr. Dominique Lanzmann, the widow of Claude Lanzmann, who directed the film SHOAH. She was an instrumental part of Dr. Katrovich’s work in adapting SHOAH for the stage.

While the research had been going on for years, it wasn’t until the 2020 lockdowns that Dr. Kantrovich, encouraged by his daughter Andrea, began turning SHOAH into a play and acquiring the rights. One significant challenge was taking the 9.5 hour documentary and condensing it for live theater. Another major challenge was the emotional toll the process had on Dr. Kantrovich. He explains, “In reading and rereading the text and putting the puzzle together, I could not work more than an hour, maybe two at a time. I kept going back to the

20 | May 2024 prince william living

stories I had been told and ‘the eyes.’ It was tearing me apart, but it had to be done.” All of the years of preparation paid off. Fauquier Community Theatre premiered SHOAH in 2022, and Castaways revived it afterwards, using much of the original cast.

The Impact of SHOAH

SHOAH has had a profound effect on all involved. The cast, crew members, and leadership were moved by the production itself and the impact it had on audiences. It also brought in an audience and crew members new to the Castaways organization. As Castaways was performing this production, they did not care about the audience size or how “successful” the production was. What mattered was telling the stories of the survivors, townspeople, and even the perpetrators. Relaying the reality, remembering the horrors, and giving a voice to those who suffered was their mission, and they committed to it. They faced challenges in the process, having only four weeks to rehearse, but this commitment kept them pushing forward.

The show’s music is particularly impactful. It was written by Jews who were imprisoned in the death camps and ghettos. The music in the production interlaces the different scenes, called vignettes in this show, together. For those who did not survive this terrible time, the music they created is their legacy. Not only is the music itself moving, but its origin is poignant.

The impact SHOAH has had on the community overall is astounding, as evidenced by the many, many comments Castaways received from those who watched the performances. One audience member said, “I needed downtime to process it all. It is/was extremely impacting (and yet depressing, but I expected that.). I appreciated the tribute in silence with the candles instead of a curtain call.” Another audience member put it, “This was a stunning production. Moving. Profound. Disturbing. I am

grateful my children were able to experience this ‘Devastation;’ and to begin to understand our capacity for inhumanity and for self-delusion.”

Moving Forward

The 2024 season has been condensed for Castaways Theatre as the Ferlazzo Building is used for early presidential election voting. However, this has not stopped them from offering wonderful productions to the community. Their Home Theatre Troupe put on Sherlock Holmes in March.

Now, they are excitedly preparing for their upcoming productions. They will be performing Heathers August 9 to18, which they are holding auditions for in May. In 2025, Dr. Kantrovich will direct The Greatest Generation Speaks, an adaptation of the book by Tom Brokaw.

How to Get Involved and Calls to Action

Castaways Theatre is always looking for volunteers to be a part of the organization in any capacity: cast, crew, and board members. They can be contacted through the contact form on their website castawaystheatre.org. Here you can also learn about upcoming shows, how to buy tickets, and ways to get involved. After attending a show, be sure to stay afterwards to get pictures, autographs, and discussions with the cast and crew members. Castaways Theatre believes everyone has talents that can be used in the world of theater and encourages you to put those talents to good use with them.

With a plethora of captivating colors to choose from, the task of selecting the perfect shade can feel daunting. Here's a curated selection of the top trending paint colors for bathrooms in 2024 to ignite your inspiration and guide you toward creating your ideal sanctuary.

Embrace Moody Blues

This year, there's a noticeable shift toward moody and intricate blue hues for bathroom decor. From dusky blues to midnight tones, these rich shades add depth and sophistication to your space. Blues evoke a sense of renewal, making them ideal for crafting a spa-like ambiance. Deep blue tones beautifully accentuate the calming essence of water, enhancing the overall tranquility of your bathroom retreat.

Soft Pink Elegance

Soft pink palettes are experiencing a surge in popularity for bathroom aesthetics. Think hues like blush pink, mauve, and delicate peach tones, imparting a sense of softness and refinement to your surroundings. These gentle colors complement this year's favored metallic finishes such as brass, copper, and rose gold, while seamlessly integrating with natural elements. Enhance the organic ambiance by incorporating verdant plants, adding vitality to your bathroom oasis.

Embrace Warm, Earthy Tones

Warm, earthy tones are en vogue not only for bathrooms but for home decor overall. Muted whites, tans, taupe, browns, and creams infuse timeless elegance into your space, fostering a cozy and inviting atmosphere. These hues harmonize effortlessly with other popular shades, facilitating a seamless integration of diverse color palettes. Embrace the natural world by incorporating earthy tones, bringing a sense of tranquility and warmth to your bathroom sanctuary.

Nurture with Natural Green

Green continues to reign as a favored hue for bathroom design in 2024. From soothing mint to earthy olive and serene sage, green tones evoke a refreshing and calming ambiance. Pairing green shades with blues enhances the tranquil atmosphere, fostering a sense of relaxation reminiscent of natural landscapes. Embrace the harmony of nature within your bathroom sanctuary, cultivating a space of serenity and rejuvenation.

Timeless Elegance: Black and White

The classic combination of black and white transcends trends, offering a timeless aesthetic that exudes sophistication and

modernity. This color scheme is particularly popular in 2024, providing a versatile backdrop for incorporating pops of color into your decor. Whether creating a chic, minimalist space or a light-filled oasis, black and white bathrooms remain a steadfast choice for discerning homeowners seeking timeless elegance.

Maximizing Space with Paint

For small bathrooms, light color tones are key to creating the illusion of space. Opt for airy whites and soft pastels to visually expand your room, while strategically placed mirrors enhance the sense of openness by reflecting light throughout the space. Thoughtfully selected lighting fixtures further brighten and enlarge the room, ensuring your bathroom feels spacious and inviting.

Final Thoughts

With an array of captivating paint colors trending this year, updating your bathroom is an exciting endeavor. Let this guide inspire you as you embark on transforming your space with the perfect shade for your sanctuary.
