M

ax Khan came into our lives and touched our hearts in a way that few people can. His big smile and bigger heart were his trademark. When Max passed away, the shock was felt not only here, in Oakville, but across the country. Dignitaries from across Canada, including Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and former Ontario Premier Bob Rae, came to his funeral. But it was his dad who summed it up best when he said that Max was only 45 years old, but had lived 100 years in that short time. He was a busy Bay Street lawyer, a Liberal candidate and a Town Councillor, but he always had time for friends and strangers alike. His two trademark statements were “How can I help?” and “Well, let’s do it.” Oakville lost a community champion and I lost a best friend. Max encouraged me to run for Town Council, and it was a privilege to serve with him since 2010. He was a tireless advocate for the Oakville community, and a champion for our seniors and the less

fortunate in our community. He encouraged each of us to live our lives in love and peace, to show tolerance and celebrate our differences while embracing all cultures and religions. Max had cancer three times, and he didn’t just survive cancer – he thrived. He was strong, passionate and full of energy, and an inspiration to all who met him. It has been my great honour to be Team Captain for Team Max in the Oakville Terry Fox Run for the last three years. Together, we raised almost $20,000. This September, Team Max will be out again in memory of our dear friend, and I invite anyone who’s interested to join us. If there is one thing that each of us can do to honour Max’s memory, it is to live our lives as he did – to show other people kindness and compassion, to make time for those around us, to listen to the problems of others and to smile. HOT FASHIONS Local fashion experts tell us what’s new this season By Suzy Godefroy

Warm weather sends us scouring through our closets to take stock of what we have and what we need. Fashion experts advise buying something new every year and working it into your wardrobe to keep your outfits fresh, interesting and updated.

T

o discover what’s new this season we turn to some of Oakville’s most popular fashion boutiques. Anna Cammarata of Avante Boutique, Sue Chatsworth of Chatsworth & Hall and Claudia Russo of TiVesto reveal some great insight into what is trending on the runways. Anna Cammarata of Avante Boutique in Downtown Oakville has been in fashion for over 24 years and has vast insight into everyday fashions that look and feel great. “I would have to say that 2015 is all about unveiling the true romantic at heart.” Silk, lace, crochet, cotton and linen can create flowing lines and structured silhouettes. Runways all over the world have featured the boho-chic style which is a combination of sheer materials, lace detailing and retro patterns. Italy’s Femma Fatale is a stunning novelty line that goes great with a pair of True Lux lace 6

panelled jeans. With a multitude of trendy European fashions from sizes 4 to 16 available at Avante, Anna recommends some of her favourite designers such as Paul Brial and Caty Lesca. These designers offer beautifully constructed garments in luxurious fabrics and cuts for every figure. With the summer heat soon on its way, linen dresses from Maloka of Portugal are also a must this year. Avante lines include Paul Brial, Simon Chang, Desigual, Femme Fatale, Caty Leska, Frank Lyman, Mac Jeans, Maloka, Roc’N Karma, NYDJ, Sandwich, Sympli, Tricotto, and Tru Lux. Avante Boutique is located at the south-west corner of Lakeshore and Reynolds and offers full wardrobing services at no charge. century old building in Downtown Oakville. Owner Sue Pritchard says when you are relaxed and comfortable you are confident, and that is how you feel at Chatsworth & Hall. Chatsworth & Hall offers free alterations on regularly priced clothing and guarantees that anything you purchase will fit you perfectly. When you don’t have to worry about the fit, you have more confidence about the look. Chatsworth & Hall lines include NJDJ, Bylyse, Nic & Zoe, Parkhurst, Betty Barclay, Mac Jeans and Joseph Ribkoff. Claudia Russo of TiVesto Boutique in Bronte tells us that a major component in the 2015 fashion scene is floral prints. Despite its somewhat repetitive design, floral is timeless. Luckily, designers such as Anna Rachele offer the latest florals for the everyday modern woman. Ti Vesto Boutique believes that florals are definitely a must for your wardrobe. Similar to florals, leather will not be fading anytime soon. Designers such as Les Soeurs and Sonia Villa have graced the fashion world by designing beautiful leather pieces in pants, wide belts and the gorgeous jackets. For those who love their blue jeans, restructured denim is back with unique styles that are rich in design. Boho designs are also very popular, going against the fitted miniskirt and tight tank top. Boho fashion is all about comfort and includes delicate elongated dresses, funky designs and multiple hippie looks. TiVesto lines include Les Soeurs, Anna Rachele, and Sonia Villa. TiVesto is located on Lakeshore Road in Bronte Village. Beachy Keen is Oakville’s only specialty swimwear boutique. Located in the heart of beautiful Downtown Oakville, Beachy Keen has a wide selection of designer swimwear for all shapes and sizes and is well stocked with cover ups, sarongs, pareos, beach dresses,

sun hats, sandals and beach bags. The store features Azura, California Girl, La Blanca, Nanette Lepore and Sea Folley. Downtown Oakville has become a destination location for luxury brands being sold on consignment. By Consignment on Trafalgar Road and Closet 112 and Second Chance on Dunn Street have become very popular consignment boutiques for all ages as the sustainable fashion marketplace has grown significantly. From Gucci, Chanel, Dolce and Gabbana, Burberry, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Michael Kors, Christian Louboutin, and Jimmy Choo, shopping for your choice designer has become an impressive escapade. Enjoy incredible merchandise that looks great and at a fraction of the retail price. OM

Designer Tips

What’s new for the home in 2015

By Jenna Cadieux

Each year new design trends and colour palettes re-inspire our love of “home.” As a designer, I am frequently asked what’s worthy of an investment. These are a few simple ways (for weekend handymen and design enthusiasts alike) to update your home this season.

Oak ville Magazine

2015-06-05 11:10 AM

Put it on a Dimmer One of the simplest and most effective ways to improve the feeling in your home is to install dimmer switches on all decorative light fixtures, even lamps. A dimmed dining room chandelier can mimic the soft glow of candlelight, and island pendants can alter a kitchen from prep station to quiet cafÊ with a simple touch (and don’t we all look better in a softer light?). Maximize Windows with Drapery Designers employ many tricks to create the look of larger, dramatic windows with drapery. To elongate a window and heighten a room, hang drapery rods only a few inches below the ceiling or crown moulding. Also, ensure that the draperies look full by using lined panels. The second layer creates a soft, rolling effect and protects the fabric from fading. Monochromatic is Modern Most homeowners’ first instinct is to paint baseboards, trim and crown moulding bright white, to contrast with the wall colour. Consider painting out this detail with the same colour as the wall for a more modern look. Visually, it prevents the eye from stopping at the trim, creating a seamless transition from floor to ceiling. A Softened Palette Following the popularity of industrial style, interiors are now taking a softer turn. Blush pinks and muted blues are appearing in fabrics, furniture and rugs as a more feminine counterpart, and these shades look beautiful paired with the gold and brass metals that have reinvented our hardware, faucets and accessories. The folks at Swiss Interiors, a Downtown Oakville fixture for more than 60 years, suggest a touch of whimsy to personalize a room. Comfort should be the most important element when choosing a sofa or chair for a well-used room and replace at least one accessory item every season to keep your decor updated. Making even the smallest changes can have a great impact on how we feel about our home. Consider attempting one of these ideas as a weekend project, and trust me on the dimmers. DOWNTOWN

Facelift

Making the core a destination for culture, commerce and connections Downtown Oakville is a thriving, vibrant, cultural, commercial and residential area and the Town of Oakville wants to ensure it remains that way — a downtown that protects the past while providing for the future.

T

he Downtown Plan was launched in December of 2013 and set the stage for an intensive year of community engagement. Public consultation was fuelled by the passion that drives retailers, arts groups, cultural groups, residents and property owners to want to make something good even better — to want to get involved and have a voice in their community. The Downtown Plan is one of the most creative, inclusive and compelling projects in Oakville and the community’s input has been, and continues to be, critical in making this project a success. The

12

Town believes that to realize the dream will be the greatest measure of success. One of the most significant components is the Downtown Cultural Hub Study, which explores opportunities to create a downtown cultural destination — creating a space with a performing arts centre, art gallery, library, as well as outdoor and indoor program space that will become the cultural, social, and economic heart of our community. Last fall, the public was presented with a set of themes that looked at possible locations for the cultural facilities. The two preferred plans

were Adapt Existing (rebuild to create better/ bigger spaces in the current locations) and Dispersed (build some new facilities on Centennial Square and some on other town sites such as the former post office). The DCH team is now developing options for how these cultural facilities can fit and work together best on which sites. How and when all these facilities can/should be constructed is a huge undertaking. The sequencing of the facilities will need to take into consideration several principles including current facility operations, cost and construction implications.

Oak ville Magazine

12-13-Downtown Oakville.indd 12

2015-06-05 10:16 AM

The next step is for the DCH study team to present a draft Downtown Master Plan to the public on June 24. This draft plan will outline the options for both renovated and the new build models and ask residents and business owners for feedback before going to town council in the fall. The other component of the plan includes a transportation and streetscape study, which will create a master plan for all of the roads in the downtown study area — from Allan Street west to Navy Street, and Randall Street south

to Robinson Street. The purpose was to create standards for any future work in this area that would enhance the downtown by improving the streetscape and function of the roads for people and all modes of transportation. This study also provides direction for the reconstruction of Lakeshore Road. This plan got the green light and so the twoyear process begins with consultations with business owners and area residents. The end result promises to be a more vibrant and picturesque downtown core. HEALTH

Spring into Health Three of Oakville’s top foodies and wellness aficionados reveal revitalization tips Edited and Compiled by Nicolette Little

S

ome of Oakville’s dedicated health advocates have some Spring tips to help you restore your sense of post-winter wellbeing. The following are “top tips” from CJ Martin, owner of CJ’s Cafe in Bronte, who has focused on helping residents “nourish body and soul” since 2006, Shannon Miniaci, food writer and tea sommelier, and owner of Bronte’s Mad Hatter Tea Co., and Maureen Vohora, owner of iGita Hot Yoga Studio and OmJuice, smoothie and juice bar.

Tips from CJ “I am a ‘Nutritarian,’” says CJ. “That means I try to get the most nutrition per calorie I can. There is something called the ANDI Scale (Aggregate Nutrient Density Index), which tells you which foods have the most nutrition per calorie (you can Google it). When meal planning and shopping for home or the café, I make sure 90-95 percent of the calories are highly nutritious and delicious. The other 5–10 percent – well, that’s for the just-for-fun food: foods or drinks that have no redeeming health benefit, but you love them anyway. I couldn’t live my life without ever having another cookie! It’s all about balance. Just make sure most of what you eat is about 14

high nutrition, and mostly (if not exclusively) plant-based.”

Tips from Shannon According to Shannon, “Tea is jam-packed with wonderful enriching health properties.” Apparently, “It’s loaded with flavonoids, polyphenol antioxidants and EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) flavanols, which are antioxidants specific to the camellia sinensis plant and can also be found in red wine. Free radicals deprive our cells of oxygen and cause damage to our DNA, which leads to multiple types of cancer, heart disease, clogged arteries and excess weight retention. The unique, oxygen-rich, antimicrobial and antioxidant qualities of tea help fight against free radicals floating around in our body, and regular tea consumption assists the body’s natural radical defence mechanism.” Which teas are best for health, one might ask? Shannon recommends white tea, which has the most potent anticancer properties, as well as green tea, which has the highest concentration of EGCG flavanols. Black, pu-erh and tisanestyle teas also make the grade. As a general rule, Shannon recommends that the less the tea is processed, the better!

Tips from Maureen Maureen suggests cleansing as a great way to flush toxins from your system and to give you a “jump start” on your path to better health and wellness. “Embarking on a juice cleanse doesn’t mean you have to starve yourself of the nutrition your body requires: you can drink any number of raw juices to get the vitamins and minerals you need, while your body takes a break from your normal solid foods to effectively ‘flush out your system.’” Maureen also notes that “Cleansing can have amazing effects on your body, as well as your overall feelings of wellness and clarity, leaving you feeling lighter, fresher and revitalized – which is exactly what you need when summer (and bathing suit season) is just around the corner.” We’ve marched through March and sprung into Spring: it’s time to open ourselves up to the revitalization that warmer climes can bring. The food and drinks we consume, however, cannot be undervalued for the role they play in our overall health. For more health tips, email CJ Martin at cj@cjscafeinbronte.com, Shannon Miniaci at info@madhattertea.co, or Maureen Vohora at iGita@OmLife.ca, or even better, drop by CJ’s Café, Mad Hatter Tea Co., or iGita Hot Yoga Studio’s juice bar – OmJuice, in Oakville. PATIOS

With the arrival of spring comes the emergence of life – tree buds, crocuses, tulips and restaurant patios. Oakville is home to an array of patios, from small sidewalk cafe tables to full dining areas. Bronte, Kerr Village and Downtown Oakville boast dozens of outdoor settings to suit any taste and palate – and mood. Corks Restaurant One of downtown’s most popular eateries has a wonderful patio for lunch, dinner or a midafternoon break. Nestled in what is affectionately known as Lakeshore Lane, Corks offers an adventurous tapas-style menu and a generous wine selection.

The first original Corks Restaurant in Oakville has been serving up a taste of Spanish and Portuguese-American inspired food in traditional tapas style since 2009. The small plates are perfect for sharing and allow couples and groups to experience a wide array of flavours in

one sitting. Its location offers a nice quiet respite from the bustling shopping scene along Lakeshore Road, just a few steps away. Corks is open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner. corksrestaurant.ca oak ville Magazine

The Crêpe Kitchen Celebrating five years in Oakville, The Crêpe Kitchen on Dunn Street has quickly gained a reputation – and the awards to back that up – for their homemade gourmet sweet and savoury crêpes. Reminiscent of a small French bistro, the restaurant has a quaint sidewalk setting to enjoy the spring and summer air while enjoying one of their delicious crêpes. Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday and until 4 p.m. on Sunday (closed Monday), The Crêpe Kitchen has become a favourite stop for visitors from across Canada and beyond. The reason for its popularity? Guests

are welcomed by the friendly owners Eduardo and Ana Siles and are able to select from a wide array of crêpes, French onion soup, sandwiches and salads, all homemade in their open kitchen. The restaurant received its liquor licence a couple of years ago so you can enjoy a Niagara wine or local beer with your crêpe. Oh, and let’s not forget the French-pressed Peruvian coffee to cap off an amazing breakfast, lunch or mid-day snack. “We are so thankful to our many loyal customers, many of whom travel from the GTA, Guelph, Niagara and farther afield,” Ana says. The restaurant has been rewarded with numerous lo-

Piazza Bistro In the Towne Square, located in the heart of Downtown Oakville, Piazza Bistro’s two patios are the perfect place to experience firsthand their passion for food and good company. The Piazza Bistro philosophy was inspired by the Italian piazza culture, where the town square is the heart and soul of community life, filled with music, laughter and aromas of fresh coffee and authentic food. Dine on the licensed patio, under the red umbrellas and surrounded by luscious greenery. Choose from a lunch menu of panini, pizza, and salads, or make your selections from the delicious Italian-inspired dinner menu with chef ’s daily features. The patio is the perfect place to meet friends for one of Piazza’s specialty drinks or explore its exceptional wine list. Complete your meal with one of Piazza’s famous coffees, an authentic Italian gelato, house-baked sweets or fresh fruit smoothie while watching the world go by. facebook.com/Piazza.Bistro.Oakville Piazza Bistro

The Spas of Oakville A Review of Bronte Harbour’s South Shore Spa by Nicolette Little | english-mechanic.com

I

’ve been lucky: I’ve been asked to review some pretty good spas. So when I was recently invited to Bronte Harbour’s beautiful South Shore Spa (SSS), I looked forward to my treatments. I can wholeheartedly say that my experience with SSS’s exceptional service, its estheticians’ level of expertise, and its quality of treatments put this spa among Oakville’s (not to mention the GTA’s) best. Lynn Nguyen and Karolina Roman are the spa’s manager and medical esthetician, respectively. Both are friendly in a way that goes far beyond the strained smiles sometimes forced on clients by modern customer service standards. I was welcomed to the spa with genuine interest and offered healthful teas and delicious chocolates. Then they sat me down for stage one of my SSS experience: the pedicure. After 25 years of dance training and performance, it’s an understatement

to say I’m not fond of my feet. Nonetheless, great conversation and clear evidence that these ladies were well trained and experienced put me at ease. As a medical esthetician, Karolina is not only able to give an enjoyable pedicure, facial or other treatments; she’s also trained to recognize skin-related health issues and treat them at a deeper level. If you have rosacea, dry and cracked skin, or scarring, for example, she can work to relieve these problems and then recommend follow-up care at home. Throughout my facial, Karolina was able to address my skin health questions from a medical perspective, which was a special treat. She even sent me home with a few tips for self-care and prevention. The quality of the treatments is of the highest order. It is a rare facial that makes me feel I’m actually glowing from inside out – and rarer still when the beneficial results last. Products like Environ and Footlogix were used during the

facial and pedicure stages of treatment, and they are recognized for their efficacy in the cleansing, rejuvenation and/or protection of skin. Further, all metal implements used during a manicure or pedicure procedure have been sterilized to the level of a hospital or medical care centre. Foot files are used only once, and then given to the client to take home. The attention given to sanitation and health in this area was both noticeable, and reassuring. Of course, the fact that SSS’s big windows allowed me to gaze out over the harbour, and that the interior design – with its blue and silver hues, plentiful decorative cushions and massive chandelier – makes clients feel they’re of royal descent must be mentioned, as they are added benefits to what this spa has to offer. I wholeheartedly offer my recommendation that you be treated by the lovely Karolina and Lynn – as well as SSS’s other medical estheticians – at Bronte’s truly beautiful South Shore Spa. OM

aunching in October, Oakville Vital Signs 2015 is an illustrative and informative summary of the issue areas affecting Oakville’s community vitality. The project is intended as an essential checkup that will assess the changing social landscape in Oakville, and considers 11issue areas that determine quality of life in the community – including poverty, mental health, charitable giving and volunteerism. In collaboration with the national Vital Signs initiative being conducted by Community Foundations of Canada, The Oakville Community Foundation will be one of more than 30 other municipalities nationwide conducting this report. The Vital Signs report will draw from various databases, while facilitating new and engaging research in an effort to align community

goal-setting.The published findings are an important starting point for The Foundation to determine future engagement and creative problem solving opportunities around issues that affect vitality in the Oakville community. The impact of Oakville Vital Signs 2015 will extend beyond just The Foundation’s vision, as it will provide crucial data to charities and agencies across Halton that will help in the delivery efficacy in programming and matching new services to emerging needs. The Oakville Community Foundation builds vital futures for the community by working with caring people to build endowments, by granting funds to the widest range of local charities and by bringing people together to build participation and strengthen community philanthropy. Yoga

Revolution

How the ‘little studio that could’ has taken Oakville by storm by Nicolette Little | english-mechanic.com

K

err Street is a mecca of yogic activity. The number of people – women, men, teens and kids alike – strolling around in the latest athletic and stretch gear has grown exponentially over the past year. Has an increasing trend towards health consciousness been causing Oakville’s “yoga revolution” – or has yoga somehow become more accessible, exciting and innovative in this town? While it’s probably a mix of these factors, one word goes a long way to explaining the growth in yoga’s sway: “iGita.” iGita, then and now… iGita opened its doors five years ago, albeit in a different location and form. Originally a members-only club on Lakeshore Road, in downtown Oakville, the owners – Shawn and Maureen – quickly realized there was a massive market for yoga in town. They had to act quickly, out of sheer need, to triple their space. Having moved to their current Kerr Street location about a year ago, the new 12,500 square foot space is now also regularly filled to capacity. As Shawn notes, “We regularly see 35 to 50 people in our classes, and sometimes we’re up to as many as 80.” There are several reasons for this interest, and these reasons go beyond the vicissitudes of temporary whim or fad. iGita presents visitors with a panoply of healthy living options, or what Shawn calls “value added” elements, in the form of varied classes (yoga, hot yoga, Pilates, hot Pilates, spin, aerial yoga or barre, for example), nutritious prepared beverages and foods, and an unmistakable feeling of community that has grown amongst the studio’s many members. Of course, the fact that, as soon as you step inside iGita’s double

glass doors, you’re enveloped by a trendy yet classy and calming space, is nice as well. Health, both inside and out. One of iGita’s particularly innovative features is the OmJuice juice bar, which Shawn and Maureen

recently opened inside the studio with partners Jessica and Allison. Providing delicious “juiced-toorder” smoothies and blended juice options – including the “Summerlicious” and “Mother Earth,” which are major client favourites – this juice bar allows members to pre-order a fresh and satisfying

drink that will be ready and waiting for them after their class. OmJuice has a variety of fresh raw, vegan, organic and gluten and dairy-free options; it sources all ingredients locally; and it even makes its own almond milk. iGita also runs a number of guided cleanses and detox programs through the studio and OmJuice juice bar, and clients can pick up their needed cleanse food items and juices (just bring your glass jar!) on-site. Shawn and Maureen have now set up a patio outside the studio, on Kerr, to make OmJuice’s menu items accessible to the public. “Sun Salutations” – for real. iGita has demonstrated incredible growth. And it’s in no way resting on its laurels. The day of our interview, in fact, Shawn received good news: iGita will be offering classes on their rooftop yoga deck this summer! This rooftop patio will allow members to practise and take classes while overlooking Lake Ontario, Oakville’s tree canopy and the attractive downtown Oakville core as early as the first week of June. This same month, iGita will launch its very own Ayurvedic clinic and services, adding yet another avenue through which Oakville residents can access natural treatments. From its humble beginnings five years ago to its current state of mass popularity, iGita has had a powerful impact on Oakville residents’ physical and mental wellbeing. It is clear from the plethora yogis coming in and out of iGita’s doors that Oakville’s residents are thankful. And thankfulness, wellbeing, and good health tend to have a trickle-down effect through a community at large… Thank you iGita, Maureen and Shawn. OM Oak ville Magazine
