The universe comes to life with the passage of time. Time is Nature with all her expressions. Each moment, minute and second a unique expression. The passage of time has always been deeply embraced in Japan. This spirituality lives within every Grand Seiko. Ever-changing, graceful and grand. Its design unveils the differing expressions of nature as light becomes shadow. Meticulously crafted. Nature incarnated in every detail of its artistry. A tribute. In deep reverence.

EDITOR'S NOTE

No. 67 We're all in this together.

T

he last two months have been unlike any we've ever experienced before. We just want to take the time to send out good thoughts to everyone who has been affected by this pandemic. For those who have lost a loved one, we are so sorry for your loss. There truly are no words, but we are thinking about all of you. For those who have carried the load—our healthcare workers, service members, and essential workers—we are grateful for your bravery and dedication. For those who have lost a job or had to shutter their business, we're here to empathize, send positivity, and wish you nothing but the best of luck as our community reopens. I think it's important to remember that one of the things that makes us humans is our resiliency. We are a strong, adaptable bunch, and even more so when we are working together. Despite all the bad, over the last two months, I could see plenty of positives. It was awesome to witness such a strong sense of community. Small businesses had each others' backs. People selflessly supported those in need, donated to causes and businesses to help them get through, funded Kickstarters and GoFundMes. They lined up for curb-side pickup, shopped local online, led Zoom music concerts, painted pandemic murals, performed cross-city orchestras. It's this level of support, creativity, versatility, and energy that makes our town so great. It is encouraging and I am positive, as our great Queen City reopens, that we will continue to support each other and grow together. And, based on all the conversations and Zoom calls I've had over the last month with friends, colleagues, partners of our fine magazine, and members of our wonderful community, I'm very optimistic that we all are dedicated to put in the work, effort, thought, and love that will make us even stronger, that will make our future even brighter. Together we will go far. Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Editor Brett Barter, Publisher

Growing up in California, Kristen van Diggelen Sloan spent most of her childhood enjoying what she referred to as “art stuff”: coloring, playing in the mud, and letting her imagination roam. She drew much of her inspiration from the beauty of California. As she grew up, van Diggelen Sloan came to view her creativity as not just a product of her environment, but also as part of her blood. Her father, as well as other members of her family, all had that same fierce drive to create art and share it with others. “The drive to make art is truly awesome but also a challenge to channel,” says van Diggelen Sloan. “I feel like it has a life of its own—a God-given giftforce that I have to be a good steward of.” Now living in South Carolina, van Diggelen Sloan continues to share her work, particularly her oil paintings and ceramics, with those around her. “The biggest appeal for me moving from San Francisco to South Carolina,” notes van Diggelen Sloan, “was that we could afford to live in the country and have land.” This unprecedented access to nature—12 acres of it, to be exact—helped van Diggelen Sloan push her creativity even further. After observing the rolling cotton fields surrounding her home, she decided to find out all she could about the plant. From there, the cotton labyrinth project was born.

“How the viewer perceives the work is really a reflection of themselves. I want to give them a lot of visual cues to sit with—to explore, to think. It’s all about them.” 32 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE 2020

“A big part of my cotton labyrinth project is about experiencing not just the meditative act of walking the labyrinth, but the endurance aspect of cultivating cotton by hand,” says van Diggelen Sloan. “It’s about understanding and empathy.” While growing and harvesting her own cotton has come with its fair share of difficulties, van Diggelen Sloan has loved the project so far. She plans to use the cotton to create her own painting canvases.

“I feel like it has a life of its own—a God-given gift-force that I have to be a good steward of.”

“I planted a heritage cotton seed,” van Diggelen Sloan recalls, “which did terribly with the summer drought, so I’ll be replanting it soon… Even though my labyrinth didn’t turn out as planned, I’ve been greatly affected by walking our property, visiting nearby farms and neighboring historic Brattonsville.” Learning about Brattonsville has been just as much of an inspiration to van Diggelen Sloan as the land itself. Another project of hers involves Southern face vessels, also known as face jugs, which originated from the African slave culture prevalent throughout the area. van Diggelen Sloan aims to create her own vessels, with a distinct focus on women and in her own style. Regardless of what she’s working on, van Diggelen Sloan always keeps in mind that her artistry is meant for sharing—for giving the viewer something new to experience. “How the viewer perceives the work is really a reflection of themselves,” she admits. “I want to give them a lot of visual cues to sit with — to explore, to think. It’s all about them.” info vandiggelensloan.com / @kristenvandiggelensloan

The curtain has come down for the time being. However, we have exciting news: The Blumenthal Theater in Charlotte has announced its 2021 theater season featuring all your favorite shows. For Charlotteans, the season is expected to start in November. They will be debuting Tony and Academy Award-winning classics like Tootsie and To Kill A Mockingbird. The 20202021 season will be the biggest in Blumenthal’s history with 17 shows. There will be more than 200 individual performances. Hamilton will also return to Charlotte as part of the 202021 PNC Broadway Lights season. Dates will be announced with the full 2020-21 season this spring. All of the 2019-20 PNC Broadway Lights Season Ticket holders who renew for the 2020-21 season will be guaranteed seats for Hamilton. This upcoming Broadway season will give the Charlotte community and its theater fans something to look forward to. The current crisis has been a stark reminder. It’s reminded us

how lucky we were to enjoy the vibrant cultural and theatrical spectacles within our community. It really is a privilege to experience these great performances. When it’s safe for people to return to venues, Blumenthal Theater in Charlotte could be the catalyst that brings the community back to life. As an additional bonus, Blumenthal will continue its “ticket protect plan” this year. Subscribers can protect their investment if they are unable to attend shows due to an approved reason such as dangerous weather conditions, illness, accidents and more. The Blumenthal maintains their mission to present the best in the performing arts and in partnership with others, share and employ the arts as a major catalyst to strengthen education, build community cohesiveness and advance economic growth. info blumenthalarts.org @blumenthalarts

There has been a furor in the food industry over the past few years for independent restaurants that source locally. In Charlotte, particularly, they seem to be having a moment. And although this eat local mentality has trickled to the “shop local” slogan too, the independent retail sector in the Queen City still has plenty of room to grow.

40 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE 2020

Nicole Corriher is here to change that with her stylish, made-for-the-modern-shopper, boutique, The Golden Carrot. The Golden Carrot’s first home was in Hoboken, New Jersey in 2015, but moved to Charlotte when Corriher and her husband decided it was time for a change. They found a home in Charlotte, where Corriher’s husband

Stepping into The Golden Carrot’s space at Atherton Mill feels a little like entering a modern day fairytale. A gentle blush hue mingles with white in a cloud-like wall treatment, which swaths a delicate balance of antique and contemporary furniture and decor. Pearl earring light fixtures cast a warm glow over mid-century modern armchairs. An antique brass floor mirror reflects the pink light of a neon sign proclaiming “Fresh Carats.” It’s the perfect welcoming and opening ambience for visitors basking in the glow of the shop’s ethereal jewelry.

“I want people to browse and feel an effervescence of excitement as they discover and fall in love with the pieces they will treasure for a lifetime,” says Corriher. In the textured display cases, shoppers will discover a wide variety of gemstones. Every piece has been hand selected by Corriher. “I was such a jewelry fanatic prior to opening The Golden Carrot that I had become very familiar with many of the indie designers that I now carry in the shop.” Most of the designers are based in New York City or Los Angeles, with a smattering of Canadian artists.

Known for its high-intensity, efficient workouts and its upscale amenities, Barry’s has a rabid fan base of dedicated fitness lovers following. When the studio had to close down to comply with keeping their studio and clients as safe as possible, the team got creative and opened the doors to their very first virtual Red Room. A generous heap of fresh pasta and a glass of red wine, or a thoughtfully topped pizza and a chilled beer; this, for many, is the definition of comfort food. The team behind Indaco, a new Italian restaurant at Atherton Mill, knows this well and embraces their role as the purveyor of comfort. Take a peek at Indaco’s menu, and you’ll immediately see that this restaurant isn’t trafficking in your mom’s spaghetti and meatballs. Or, perhaps you won’t make it passed the antipasti menu, which includes standouts like crunchy fried artichokes tossed in walnut anchovy vinaigrette, and creamy burrata served with butternut squash puree, apples, puffed farro, prosciutto, and lavash. The menu spans regions of Italy, while also incorporating flairs of local cuisine. “We are trying to strike a balance

“We are trying to strike a balance between a traditional Italian eater and the foodie who’s looking for something a little more progressive.” between a traditional Italian eater and the foodie who’s looking for something a little more progressive,” says Justin Shoener, the Charlotte Operations Director for The Indigo Road. Revamping classic cuisine is a tall order, but not too tall for Executive Chef Matt Hoang. “When it came to naming a chef, we wanted someone that had previous experience with fresh Italian cuisine, but we also wanted someone that had a passion for using local ingredients,” explains Justin. “Chef Matt not only has worked with Italian cuisine in the past, but he has existing relationships with farms in the area, as well as has a farm himself.” Drink pairings for Hoang’s dishes are crafted under the watchful eye of bar manager Larisa Yanicak who, like Hoang, switches the menu to spotlight local, seasonal ingredients as well as new trends in the industry. Offerings include Italian wines and local beers, as well as gin and tonic on tap. Cocktails also feature predominantly on the drink menu with standouts like Irre-Zest-Able—a concoction of Ketel One Oranje, charred grapefruit, rosemary, pink peppercorn, citrus—and The Count of Montenegro, which is a blend of Monkey Shoulder Scotch, Amaro Montenegro, fig, cinnamon, citrus, and Tiki Bitters.

The Charlotte location will be the second for Indaco, which also exists in Charleston under the Indigo Road Hospitality Group management. Although some of the more popular dishes from Charleston have traveled to the Charlotte menu, the head chefs at each location have considerable autonomy over the menus, which are intended to be chef-driven and will rotate with the seasons. Indaco occupies a gorgeous space in South End with large windows, a spacious patio, and an open kitchen that allows guests to witness the care that goes into the creation of their meals. Wood accents pervade the interior, including the bar top, which was constructed from wood reclaimed from an oak tree on the Atherton property. The decor is as top quality as the food and beverage program, which is just what you’d expect from the group that brought Charlotte O-Ku and Sukoshi. Rob Duckworth, owner of The Cellar at Duckworth’s, on the corner of North Tryon and Seventh Street, has introduced a new concept to Charlotte called Link & Pin. Charlotteans can expect the same quality of food and drink from Duckworth’s new restaurant as they expected from The Cellar, but with a few new twists. Despite Rob’s wealth of experience in the food industry,

58 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JUNE 2020

no corner was cut, no butter platter left unturned in the planning and execution of Link & Pin. “We spent nearly 40 weeks tasting various dishes for this menu,” says Duckworth. Executive Chef Fred Quinones, who moved to Link & Pin from The Cellar, helped develop new concept menus, seasonal changes to existing menus, and special food and beverage events.

The fruit of Quinones’ and Duckworth’s labor is a menu chock full of delicious small plates and mains with a diversity of tastes. Here, there’s something for everyone: from filet mignon to burgers, chicken and waffles to a Korean rice dish, and mahi mahi to pasta. With shareables like brussel sprouts drizzled in a caramel orange glaze and crispy oysters served with sriracha honey and charred corn, it’s no surprise that many diners never make it to the mains. But of course there’s always room for dessert, especially when the menu includes gems like the house-made pop tart, replete with nutella, banana, and jalapeno bacon, and the bread pudding, a mouthwatering mix of brioche bread, salted caramel, and creme anglaise. Link & Pin’s cocktail menu is the brainchild of Ron Oleksa, the same mastermind behind The Cellar’s mixed drink list. You will be hard-pressed to see the same menu on separate visits, since drinks rotate seasonally, but the bartenders are happy to mix drinks on request—be it an old favorite, a novelty, or a classic. Duckworth’s vision for Link & Pin was a space that felt elegant but approachable, classy but not pretentious. He worked with Cluck, a Charlotte-based design collaborative, when crafting the interior of Link & Pin. New York City also offered inspiration: “I love the look and feel of so many cocktail bars and restaurants up there,” says Duckworth.

Without the unique structural bones that grace the inside of The Cellar, which has its home in a building constructed in the 1930’s, Duckworth’s design team had to flex their creativity to craft an ambience that feels unique. The space is large and airy, but the creation of several smaller sections within the large area conjures a much-welcome coziness. The most popular seating areas are the lounge, which features plump furniture and tableside craft cocktails from a gleaming cocktail cart, and the outdoor patio, where a retractable roof opens to the stars. Link & Pin is located in South End, an up and coming foodie destination and the home of Charlotte’s first railroad. Thus, the neighborhood engendered both the community of gastronomes and the name that would bring this restaurant into existence. At the Link & Pin, guests enjoy dinner, weekday lunches, and weekend brunches, over which they connect to one another like train cars adjoining via a link and a pin. info linkandpin.com @linkandpinnc

A SE AT AT T H E TA BL E Charlotte’s restaurants are integral to the fabric of the city words SUNNY HUBLER / photos JAMEY PRICE

Over the past few years, we’ve written many a piece about the growing (and then quite suddenly exploding) food scene in Charlotte. The past five-plus years brought a renaissance of sorts, as the city welcomed hundreds of new eateries, innovative chefs, fine dining and the best dives. Never did we imagine that each one of them would have to take all the creativity they’d birthed already and repurpose it at breakneck speed — or that, for many, they would simply have to turn off the lights and close the doors. It was swift, sudden, and painful.

Independent restaurants across the country represent up to 4% of the nation's GDP, and 11 million people across the country are employed by restaurants — not to mention, the hundreds of millions of workers who, through the food supply and delivery chain, also depend on restaurants. Our restaurants are more than just a place to have a meal. They’re the setting of some of life's biggest and smallest moments, a place we’re willing to share intimacy with strangers, to brush elbows, to try new things, to spend extra money just to have an experience.

What’s special about your interior design approach? Our approach to a project is to develop a narrative for the space. Through our process, we hone in on key descriptors that become our rules for the space. This narrative, along with key imagery, informs how the space will look, which also allows our spaces to feel cohesive, yet unique to the client. What advice can you give to someone who may want to figure out their own home style? List the requirements for your space. Consider how you want to live. From there, look to spaces you love for inspiration. Develop a vision board for your home and let this inform your choices in style, color, and function. Trends are fun, but try and step back to consider how your space will look in five years. Be willing to spend real money on that special something. Roxy Te is no stranger to the furniture business. In fact, Te has been immersed in the industry since she was five. While her parents browsed showrooms and shopped fabrics for their business, Te napped on display couches and played with her siblings in the aisles. By middle school, she was answering phones and filing paperwork, and by college, she was helping with fabric selection and designing showrooms. That early exposure helped her form a deep connection not just with interior design, but also with

“We feel like we’ve found our cozy little niche in the furniture world, and we hope to keep getting better at what we do.” How did your experience growing up in a furniture factory influence your life today? After college, I was determined to set out to write my own story… I worked for three years buying Juniors for 300 stores. It was excellent retail training, but it didn’t take me long to realize furniture was always going to be part of my story. Growing up around manufacturing and having the resources to bring my first designs to life were definitely driving forces in making a career change… Society Social was born in 2011. What inspired you to open the flagship in Charlotte? We’ve always had North Carolina roots. Our factory was in Conover, NC

for almost 30 years, and with the birth of our daughter, we knew it was time to put down roots close to our family and factory. What are the main values and goals of Society Social? Society Social was inspired by the girl who loves high end design but can’t quite afford it. That was me! I remember lusting after a tasseled sofa in one of Tory Burch’s apartments. I thought, ‘I bet I can bring that to the consumer at an accessible price.’ From there, I dreamt up a brand that’s traditional at heart but playful and modern. My goal is to offer all the custom options normally reserved for the trade at friendly prices.

The homeowners first came to Charlotte Lucas Interior Design to revamp their master and living room. After completion, they returned for more design work, resulting in this dining room, plus a fully redone lounge, game room, sunroom, office, and powder room. More than anything, the clients, who are part of a busy family, wanted to be sure nothing in the house was “untouchable.” The elegant dining room had to be functional and livable while still feeling sophisticated enough for hosting a cocktail or dinner party.

“This house is a great example of a home with classic, great bones,” Charlotte Lucas explains. “I love that from the street view, you would not expect to swing open the doors and find what you find: Graphic wallpaper, lacquered walls, and unexpected color and design.” Through the happy marriage of CLID’s unique touch and the client’s personal style, the dining area is a joyful space filled with tasteful color and print, with art from the local gallery Hidell Brooks.

The changes were made to instill more richness and impact to the original design. The shared goal was to keep the original clean lines but also add a mixed metal feel (found throughout the home else-

They also painted the island cabinets a glossy black to better highlight the marble countertop and brass accents. Wide-planked American White Oak hardwood floors in custom stained sets help instill the modern feel. Richard

Best Homes completed the build while Shelley Wilkins of Shelley Wilkins Interior Design was responsible for the interior. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a custom-made modern wood and metal dining table and sideboard, and the custom-made crystal chandelier create the eye-catching elements of the room, while the Crestron automated shades, hidden in a recessed pocket in the ceiling, keep the room functional.

Tucked away in South Carolina’s iconic Lowcountry, the Old Town Bluffton Inn is the epitome of southern charm and splendor. The locals of Bluffton urge guests to acquire what they like to call their “Bluffton State of Mind.” While you’re in Bluffton, relax, take things slow, and luxuriate in the calm culture of the South. The Old Town Bluffton Inn, which opened in 2019, evokes a much earlier era. Equipped with provincial Parisian designs, ornate French furnishings, and luxurious bedding, the upscale boutique inn is all about aesthetic and comfort. Choose from one of 14 rooms, each with its own unique personality and design features, including walk-in marble showers, complimentary Gilchrist soaps, and scenic balconies that overlook the historic town. Speaking of history, the Old Bluffton Inn invites you to immerse yourself in the complexities of yesteryear. During the antebellum era, the town was utilized as a vacation destination for wealthy plantation owners. It also served as an important port during the Civil War. Walk through Bluffton and visit important historic sites such as The Church of the Cross, a southern gothic chapel built in 1854 by architect E. B. White. The impressive building is perfect for a photo opportunity. The church sits on beautiful grounds, adorned with palm trees and live oak.

The massive property is surrounded by lush wetlands and marshes, overgrown live oak trees, and expansive greenery. To add to its allure, a majority of the plantation exists on protected land, making it an ideal destination for the nature admirer searching for serenity. Perhaps what is most delightful about The Ford Plantation, besides its luxurious amenities and natural beauty, is its deep and enriching history. In the 1920s, Henry Ford, the iconic American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor Company, fell in love with the town of Ways Station, GA, and the

charming southern atmosphere that came with it—so much so he eventually purchased over 85,000 acres of land, covering 120 square miles. In 1936, Ford commissioned the building of a 7,000 square foot Greek revival style mansion using Savannah gray bricks. The building would eventually become known as the Main House. The stately home was built at the former location of the Richmond Plantation, which burned down during the Civil War as part of General Sherman’s infamous March to the Sea. To honor the fallen building, Ford named his new estate the Richmond Hill Plantation.

During his time in Ways Station, Ford vowed to help the city, which mainly consisted of poor laborers. His philanthropic ventures began by opening up agricultural operations, housing and medical facilities, and schools for all. He vastly improved the city’s infrastructure and is credited with building the town from the ground up. The city of Ways Station was eventually renamed Richmond Hill to honor the business magnate. Today, visitors can stay at the Main House and sleep where the American icon once slept. The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has maintained much of its original character. On the property, you’ll find Clara Ford’s beloved rose garden as well as a 1,100 foot underground tunnel that once connected The Main House to Henry Ford’s onsite laboratory. The tunnel has since been repurposed as a wine cellar for the plantation. Each morning, guests are welcomed to a full breakfast and full use of the amenities, including a golf cart to help with

getting around the large property. For the sports enthusiasts, The Ford Plantation has an onsite golf course, an equestrian center, and two swimming pools. There’s also a fitness center that offers 80-minute aerobic classes, tennis courts, and of course, opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and boating on the pristine waters that surround the estate. As far as dining goes, The Ford Plantation prides itself on imaginative and innovative coastal cuisine, all carefully crafted by Master Chef Gerald Ford. Excite your taste buds by attending one of the Lowcountry boils made with fresh shrimp caught that day. Or grab one of the many homemade soups at The Ford Plantation Market. Your dining experience will be enhanced by the excellent service and the exquisite views of the Ogeechee River. The Ford Plantation offers guests an enriching getaway on the gentle shores of Georgia. Find peace, serenity, and just the right amount of history during your weekend stay at this iconic landmark.

Meet husband and wife duo, Seth and Tori Bolt, co-owners of Bolt Farm Luxury Treehouses in Walhalla, SC., and sole owners of four luxury treehouse rentals in Charleston, SC. The enterprising couple is blazing the trail for eco-friendly, one-of-a-kind vacation experiences. Seth and Tori first met back in 2015. At the time, Tori was working as a news reporter and was assigned to interview Seth’s band, Needtobreathe, before their concert. Their meet-cute seemed straight out of a rom-com, and though they didn’t start dating right away, their connection was clear. After a few months, they reconnected and the rest is history. The couple wed a year later.

The Explored // Adventure

Inspired by the whimsy and child-like innocence of the growing treehouse trend, Seth, with the help of his father Larry Bolt, decided to build one of their very own as a honeymoon gift to Tori. They broke ground on the Bolt Family Farm in Walhalla, where Seth was born and raised and where his parents currently reside. Originally, the treehouse was intended as a unique getaway spot for friends and family. But what started as a creative honeymoon gift, quickly turned into a lucrative business opportunity. After their wedding, the couple took a chance and decided to share the beloved property on vacation rental site, Airbnb. “We honestly had no idea what to expect considering Walhalla is such a small, rural town,” Tori said. “But people almost instantaneously fell in love with it.” The treehouse was an immediate hit. And it’s no wonder why. Designed with a combination of classic Victorian and French decor, it has white-washed walls, a rustic tin roof, and features a gorgeous antique chandelier. It’s equipped with a suspension rope bridge and a double-level deck, which gives guests a bird’s eye view of the secluded woods. With the treehouses’ growing success, Seth and Tori decided to expand their business to Charleston, where they live. They found a property on the picturesque Wadmalaw Island and got to work building and designing four unique properties: The Living Room Treehouse, The Wildflower Treehouse, The Charleston Treehouse, and The Honeymoon Treehouse. As far as architecture is concerned, the couple creates each

treehouse with sustainability and environmental factors in mind. According to Tori, Seth is a firm believer that the environment around us plays a fundamental role in how we work and play. Their goal in designing the treehouses was to create thoughtful, experiential spaces for people to reconnect, recharge, and leave feeling inspired. “Seth has a very creative mind, an eye for aesthetic detail, and a plethora of design inspiration from traveling the world,” Tori explained. “He loves textures and unique combinations of materials that really give the space character and draws you in.” Each treehouse has its own personal flavor and unique aesthetic. Together, Seth and Tori filled the space with antiques and custom-crafted pieces, enlisting the help of Charleston creatives to add that extra, much-needed local flare. They also included aspects of their own personalities by adding a record player with a curated record collection, a vintage coffee grinder and a French press, coloring books for adults, classic board games, and more. “We wanted everyone who comes into the space to feel a sense of magic and wonder and to feel larger than life, as if they were in a tiny palace in the trees,” Tori said. When you visit one of their treehouses, the couple urges you to disconnect from the noise of the modern world, unplug your devices and reconnect with nature. They believe that treehouses have a detoxifying effect, leaving you feeling replenished and new.

Escape the mundane and get outside with a visit to our state's beautiful and wild places. words SUNNY HUBLER / photos JAMEY PRICE

Perhaps right now you have a bit more time on your hands, or you’re feeling cooped up and in need of fresh air. We are so grateful, for now, to still be able to get outdoors (while safely practicing distance, too). The foothills and mountains of North Carolina are a must, and these are our ten favorite hikes, waterfalls, overlooks, and adventures in the state.

Elk Falls West of Banner Elk, just east of the Tennessee border, lies Elk Falls, the largest of a series of imposing waterfalls, pours into a massive plunge pool perfect for cooling off in the summer. However, crowds tend to flock to this location because of the many other cascades that surround Elk, including the also popular Twisted Falls. In the fall, the crowds dissipate leaving most visitors in total solitude to enjoy the peacefulness and sound of water boiling over. Grandfather Mountain The popular mountain nestled between Valle Crucis and Linville is a massive spectacle offering beautiful views from several of its peaks, as well as all kinds of fun activities. For the family, simply take the Parkway to the south side and drive straight to the top where you can enjoy the small zoo and swinging bridge. For the more adventurous, the Profile

Trail on Hwy. 105 is an exhilarating hike that passes Shanty Springs, en route to Calloway Peak. Ladders on the ridge of the mountain help hikers traverse massive boulders all the way to seemingly endless views of the foothills below. Rough Ridge Just off the Parkway, Rough Ridge is the perfect hike for beginners. Parts of the trail have been built out with wooden walkways and hand rails. Its ease does not change the fact that once hikers reach the pinnacle of Rough Ridge, some of the best views on the entire Blue Ridge are available. Crowders Mountain The casual hike eventually turns vigorous but after fifteen minutes or so you should reach the ridge of Crowders where, as far as the eye can see, views of the woodlands of the Piedmont make it worth the short trip from Charlotte.

Hazel Creek One of the most wild places on the east coast, Hazel Creek is only accessible two ways. One, by a sixteen mile hike on an old logging road, or two, a journey by boat from Fontana Lake. Because of this, there are no crowds, ever. For those looking for solitude this is the place. Not to mention, it is one of the premier fly fishing locales in the state, teeming with brook, rainbow, and trophy browns. Looking Glass Falls A waterfall perfect for the family. Not exactly off the beaten path, but by this time of the year, the crowds have dwindled slightly, allowing you to park just a tad bit closer than usual to Looking Glass, and take in what many believe to be one of the most beautiful falls in the state. The gin clear water of Looking Glass, framed by yellow, orange, and red is a sight to behold. Wilson Creek Just thirty minutes north of the small foothills town of Morganton lies the Wilson’s Creek Gorge, an awe inspiring area in Pisgah offering an abundance of outdoor experiences, from kayaking to fly fishing. A trip to Wilson’s Creek can be as relaxing or extraneous as you wish from lounging on a riverside boulder enjoying the views of the
