M“Mary, if you put effort into this, you could be really good.”

This is what a teacher told Mary Benson during a required art class in high school. For Benson, who had never considered herself artistic, gravitating instead toward athletics, it kicked off a radical shift in perspective. “That moment really inspired me, and I gained a love for it that has become my greatest passion since,” said Benson.

Benson continued to take art classes throughout high school, exploring a wide range of styles and mediums without the pressure to be good at or specialize in any particular one. Her studies continued at Clemson, where she earned a degree in graphic communications with a minor in art. She landed a job as a graphic designer and spent the first four years of her professional life focusing her career efforts here. All the while, she continued creating, selling her work via social media and expanding her side hustle through word of mouth, until it was no longer a side hustle. “I got to the point where I thought, ‘I could really do this!’ I am now working as an artist full-time, pursuing my dream and my biggest passion,” says Benson.

These days, her style draws heavily from post-impressionism and fauvism. She layers textured oil paint over acrylic somewhat unevenly, allowing deeper layers to surface for the viewer. Then, she introduces bold lines and vibrant colors, resulting in a stained-glass effect that adds an extra layer of visual interest to her work.

For inspiration, Benson heads outdoors. In true North Carolina-native fashion, she looks to both the mountains and the sea, recreating the live oaks of the Lowcountry and the rhododendron blooms of the Blue Ridge in her signature vibrant style. She drinks in sweeping horizons and breathtaking vistas, but dwells in the details—the curve of a flower petal or filtering of light through a cloud. “I hope that my art brings the joy and peace of spending time outdoors into people’s homes and lives,” says Benson, whose hobbies include hiking and mountain biking.

Additionally, she finds inspiration and support from her family. Benson’s sister is also an artist and her mom is an interior designer. Together, they bounce creative ideas around and swap stories. Similarly, Benson’s husband has his own creative outlets. He ties his own flies for use when fly fishing in the winding mountain rivers, and he creates surfboards. The pull toward creative expression is something that binds them all, pulling them closer just as a compelling piece of art can bring together creator and viewer.

Benson’s original pieces, as well as prints, are available for purchase through her website marybensonart.com. Her work is also on view and available for purchase at Anne Neilson Fine Art, a gallery near SouthPark in Charlotte.

GENERATIONAL GLASS

SShed Brand Studio is a unique and historic member of Charlotte’s arts community: The stained glass experts have been providing their services for over 50 years. In the studio today, Shaylor and Natalie Knight create everything from custom leaded and stained glass windows and custom solid wood doors to cabinets, table tops, and custom jewelry.

Shaylor Knight's grandparents and parents first started the business making stained glass windows in a sheep shed in Charlotte in 1969. Slowly, the Knights moved into custom doors and restoration projects for decades-old stained glass. In 1988, the studio was moved to Dilworth.

Inheriting the tradition of his family, Shaylor learned how to hand bevel glass from his grandmother and how to build Tiffany-style lamps from his grandfather. Today, Shaylor and Natalie’s son, Elijah, is also learning the family trade.

Natalie joined the Shed Brand Studio team full-time in 2014. An MFA holder, she taught fine arts for nearly two decades across Charlotte. When she first joined, Natalie shares that one of her goals was to make the studio feel accessible to everyone versus just architects, contractors, and cabinet clientele. Adding in classes to the public was a way to provide the best portal into the production process for stained and fused glass designs, and to use Natalie’s extensive skills in the teaching field.

“Shaylor may not have a degree in fine arts, but he doesn't need one,” his wife, Natalie, explains. “The level of training he has re-

ceived is invaluable and irreplaceable. Not many people know how to build a curved leaded glass panel, or design and create painted glass pieces. [Shaylor] lived and breathed stained glass.”

Here, Natalie tells us more about the studio, the generational tradition, and what it means to make art out of glass.

How do you two work together?

Shaylor and I share the role of laying out designs and creating drawings. Shaylor prefers to draw flowers and I like to draw trees and landscape design. Shaylor and I work well together. We don't see each other that much at work: He is constantly moving, checking on the production of stained-glass windows and overseeing custom door builds. In between the spaces, he is meeting contractors and clients to go over their projects, obtain measurements, and review design concepts. While he is handling that part of the business, I am running the showroom, meeting with clients, working on drawings for new front entryways and stained-glass windows and making sure we have the supplies needed to complete projects.

Who is your typical clientele?

Our clientele fluctuates from residential, contractors, architects, churches, to cabinet companies, or just the average person that pops in to purchase a small gift for somebody. Twenty percent of what we produce yearly is for churches and the remaining 80% for residential and businesses.

What are a few particularly memorable projects?

The 1920s peacock windows from London, England. The entire wood jamb and leaded glass panel had to be restored and rebuilt.

How can people support Shed Brand Studio's work?

They can come visit the studio, take a class or pop by during the gallery crawls to see some of the latest projects that we’ve been working on. Our mirror Moravian stars may just be the newest sculpture piece they will view.

Can you tell us about any upcoming projects you’re excited for or anything else you'd like us to know?

We have a beautiful front entryway that contains a book matched dogwood tree. The tree is in the main door and the branches extend into the sidelites and transom above. It’s going to look amazing! The glass dome that we’ve been working on for a few years on and off is filled with jewels and lamberts hand blown glass. At the moment it doesn’t have a permanent location, it’s simply a project that we just had to do. Shaylor and I can’t wait for it to come to fruition.

TRUST IN THE PROCESS

EEmily Berger has spent the majority of her professional life in the creative sector, doing everything from graphic design to managing a music booking office to custom art framing. It’s no surprise, then, to learn that she was a very creative child, drawing and painting and exploring all manner of outlets under the supervision and encouragement of her mother. “I always found myself coming back to working with my hands,” says Berger.

She started woodcarving by accident. Ten years ago, she completed a yoga teacher training course and felt inspired to make a gift for her instructor. Modern yoga blocks, which are used as a prop to promote stability and comfort, are typically made of a dense foam. However, traditionally they’re made from wood, which Berger thought would make an excellent gift, particularly with a chakra symbol carved into

the top. So, she found someone who could teach her the basics of woodcarving, and then got to work creating.

“Whenever I have a new idea, I research the best method to bring it to fruition and either teach myself or seek out an experienced mentor,” says Berger. “I’m a firm believer that if you can read, you can learn most anything.”

After the yoga blocks, Berger started to make two-dimensional wall hangings that required intricate surface line carving and painting. She then began to explore the creation of functional objects like spoons, cutting boards, and bowls. Her repertoire now also includes small wood sculptures; for example, using wood edge banding to weave baskets.

These days, one of her favorite woodworking applications is hand carving wooden spoons. “People sometimes request a handle shaped like a crab claw or a mustache. Things like that are always

fun,” says Berger. Additionally, she has been spending a lot of time exploring the world of printmaking. “I enjoy doing small linocut print runs but really love larger woodblock prints,” says Berger. “It gives me the opportunity to combine the two things I love in a way that provides immersive time to think.”

As Berger has refined her skills and grown her craft, she has pursued opportunities to collaborate with, plug into, and draw from the local arts community. For example, in 2018, Berger won the Community Supported Artist Grant from the Arts and Science Council; in response to the grant, she made 50 wooden spoons—one for each of the shareholders who contributed to the grant. A photo of the completed spoons led to participation in the Art Pop Street Gallery in 2019, followed by an opportunity to lead a team of four other woodworkers in the creation of 300 cutting boards for a Charlotte Mecklenburg Library fundraiser in 2020. Then, in 2022 Berger found herself in the very lucky possession of one of the studio spaces at the McColl Center, which helped lead to the opportunity to feature her work in an exhibit at the McColl Center in 2023. “It’s a good reminder to trust the process and where the universe is leading you,” reflects Berger.

AAs the new culinary star in Elizabeth, Puerta is a Mexican eatery rooted in the relentless pursuit of quality.

“Our goal for the opening menu was to do a few things and do them really well,” says Ryan Hart, Owner and Creative Director for 1957 Hospitality, the group that developed and owns Puerta.

The group’s other restaurants include Cheat’s Cheesesteaks, The Crunkleton, and Rosemont, a wine bar and restaurant that recently opened across the street from The Crunkleton. For Greg Balch, Partner and Executive Chef at 1957 Hospitality, Puerta presented an opportunity to return to the roots of his culinary career, which developed over many years spent working as the chef at Cantina 1511.

Once inside Puerta, colorful murals adorn the walls and border the doors. Woven bar stools and table seats with handsome geometric patterns offer added character and warmth to a restaurant that’s crystal clear about exactly who it wants to be and what it wants to offer.

Puerta’s dinner menu opens with soups and salads, plus a “Little Bites” section that includes appetite teasers like tostadas, guacamole and elote bites. The next menu category, handhelds, includes empanadas (chicken tinga, lamb birria, and sweet potato options), tostadas (mushroom sausage, duck carnitas), pork belly chicharron, and tlayuda. Entree standouts include chipotle short rib (short rib, crispy yucca morsels, fresh chilies, black and pinto bean puree), and chile relleno (roasted poblano, house made Oaxacan cheese, masa tempura, mole verde). Rounding out the dinner menu is a taco section that invites diners to choose a la carte or select three to be served with rice and beans.

Puerta’s weekend brunch menu features many of the same options as the dinner menu, but with egg-forward dishes taking the place of the restaurant’s evening entree offerings. Rest assured that Puerta’s dessert menu remains, so patrons can indulge in churros, chocoflan, and quatro leches cake at all hours.

In the drink department, the star of the show is unsurprisingly the margarita. Puerta sticks with classic recipes for this indelible drink, trusting in the success of tried and true formulations using freshly squeezed juice. “The cocktail section is where the bar program's creativity was really focused,” says Hart. “Here you'll find interesting flavor combinations that really show agave's versatility in cocktail creation and Bar Manager Micah Yabrough's creativity.” For example, the spirit-forward Aztec Ritual mixes Mezcal, Cardamaro, Curacao, and mole bitters for a singularly sumptuous sipper. A spirits menu invites guests to explore the enormous variety of flavors available from regions across Mexico.

Puerta is just getting started. “We look forward to continuing to develop our core menu with the addition of specials and a new Mexican Omakase tasting menu experience in the early part of the year,” confirms Hart. info puertaclt.com / @puerta.clt

THE BEST AT BOSSY BEULAH'S

A new expanded menu at Bossy Beulah's offers the same soulful sammies but adds fresh, tasty salads and wraps.

Bossy Beulah’s, owned by restaurateur Jim Noble, knows that the most delicious meals can often come down to the simplest ingredients. While you might associate chicken sandwiches with excess—toppings piled high between two buns and ultraprocessed meat—Jim did with Bossy’s what he does best: Using simple yet tasty ingredients and menu offerings, he’s made the chicken the real star of the show.

Bossy Beulah’s uses only superior, American Humane Certified chicken raised in the Southeast with plenty of room to roam, and without antibiotics, growth hormones, or other additives. This allows for healthier chickens, which in turn makes for tastier and more tender meat for Bossy Beulah’s chicken sandwiches, wings, and Bossy Bites.

Recently, conscious of their lunch crowd looking for something a little lighter, Bossy Beulah's added new menu items using local produce, like the simple salad with rainbow carrots, pickled onions and cucumber, and a quinoa salad with baby spinach, local strawberries, crumbled feta, pickled red onions, and sunflower seeds. You can add roasted chicken or Bossy Bites on top, and there is also now a chicken salad wrap option.

Bossy’s started on Freedom Drive, right next to Noble Smoke, and has since expanded to South End, Winston-Salem, and, the newest location, Fort Mill for convenience no matter where you live. New locations are coming this year to both Ballantyne and Concord.

40 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

Noble’s great aunt Beulah, (Beaut, as he and his family called her) who knew her way with fried chicken, is the namesake. He borrowed the recipe his family has used for generations, mastered by Aunt Beaut, and spent two years tweaking and perfecting it, as well as brainstorming the menu for and character of Bossy Beulah’s. Whenever Noble takes a bite of a Beaut sandwich, he says, “I believe that’s the best chicken sandwich I've ever had!”

The signature sandwich that started it all is The Beaut, with a fried chicken breast topped with Duke’s Mayo and housemade pickles, all served between a bun sourced from Copain Bakery & Provisions. Also part of Noble’s collection of eateries, Copain is renowned for their Boulangerie-style bread, and supplies all

of Bossy Beulah’s sandwich buns. Bossy Beulah also offers their take on a hot thigh sandwich, with fried chicken thighs, Beaut’s Hot Sauce, and the same fixings as The Beaut. Their sides follow the same no-nonsense mentality. Patrons can order their famous fries, Iredell slaw, or a salad to go with their sandwich. Or, choose from the two newest options: cucumber salad and potato salad.

While Bossy’s has always been a reliable choice to swing by and grab a fresh, delicious meal quickly, the expanded catering menu and online catering ordering now make it easy to also order for the office, birthday parties, sports events, and more.

Cicchetti, in Uptown, was created to focus on a very specific kind of dining experience. Instead of a long food menu with tons of entrees, Cicchetti serves only small plates and shareable options. However, there are a few larger dishes, including a section

meant for two or more to eat. If you want a showstopper, order the wild caught catch, known as “acqua pazza.” The term in Italian cuisine refers to a poached white fish, often cooked in a lightly herbed broth. It’s simple, light, and perfectly tender every time.

South End’s newest Columbian restaurant, Muraya, comes from the team behind Havana Carolina and El Puro. The lounge-y, intimate space serves up a tapas menu influenced by the cuisine of Cartagena, a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The drink menu is uniquely delicious, and

one of our clear favorites was the “Salpicón.” The tropical drink is made with Cazadores tequila blanco, papaya, banana liqueur, lulo puree (an orange colored Colombian fruit), and tipsy fruits. The cocktail then benefits from a splash of Chardonnay and a finish of lime chantillí on top.

he returned home to the mountains and his roots, and he hasn’t looked back since. Faison was exposed to the region when he took short, regular trips as a child. He jumped at the first opportunity to live in the High Country, and attended Appalachian State University.

Presnell and Faison discovered not only their mutual love affair with the High Country, but also a passion for helping others uncover and access all this region has to offer. While working together at Blue Ridge Mountain Club, the two facilitated tremendous growth and a deep knowledge of the community. “When we joined the development team, there were roughly 12 completed homes and the only amenity was Watson Gap Park and Pavilion,” says Presnell. “Today, there are over 415 owners in the community with roughly 200 completed homes and another 60 under construction at any given time.”

“Having a foundation built on a deep understanding of what the High Country is intended to provide for clients is key.”

The BRMC you will encounter now offers world-class amenities that include a stellar on-site restaurant, Lookout Grill, state of the art fitness center, Ascent Wellness and Fitness, plus access to Chetola Sporting Reserve, over 50 miles of hiking and UTV trails, regular outdoor concerts and events, and more.

It was in 2023 that Presnell and Faison saw a new vision; thus, Storied Real Estate was crafted and came to fruition. Leveraging their 20-plus years of combined experience at Blue Ridge Mountain Club, Presnell and Faison help clients (mostly from Charlotte or the Triangle) find and own dream-come-true mountain retreats. “Having a foundation built on a deep understanding of what the High Country is intended to provide for clients is key,” explains Presnell. “And, our years spent at BRMC establishing many incredible relationships makes our team the greatest resource for BRMC buyers and sellers alike.”

In addition to a deep-seated appreciation and understanding of what BRMC has to offer their clients, the Storied team’s foundation is also built upon a principled approach to each client engagement. “Our goal is not to sell or convince a client. We are here to guide clients through a transaction,” says Presnell. “We provide them with the proper tools and information to make an informed decision based on the goals they have shared with us.”

Ultimately, what Presnell and Faison provide is a storybook setting for their client’s next chapter. “From the sense of community found in the High Country, to the lasting memories it affords,” says Presnell, “the uniqueness to this place is what we wish to share with those looking to call the High Country home.”

Storied Real Estate currently has many existing listings in BRMC with others coming soon. FRESH, FULL-SERVICE DESIGN

Karen and Alan Schmidt head up a Charlotte-based design firm that delivers seamless results.

KKaren and Alan Schmidt are the forces behind Freshwater Interior Design: A full-service interior design firm based in Mooresville, NC that does everything from picking out paint colors to new home builds. Alan is the owner and general contractor for Freshwater and Karen Schmidt is the owner and lead designer.

Karen started Freshwater Interior Design Co in 2019, when she decided to use her many design skills and invest in her own business. In 2022, Alan officially joined her on the build side and started Freshwater Custom Homes. The duo has been working together ever since to provide a seamless process for

their clients in both design and construction. Today, their projects often mix materials, use touches of wood, and add a little greenery in every room.

“We recognize that every client’s style is different, and every home is different,” Karen explains. “We spend a lot of time defining each client’s aesthetic before we dive into the actual design so we can tailor it to them. This also makes each project exciting and fresh for us as designers.”

Here, Karen tells us more about how Freshwater approaches projects, how Karen finds inspiration, and what’s on the horizon for her and her team.

“When our clients tell us that their house turned out better than they could’ve imagined, that’s music to our ears!”

What kind of design education did you receive? How, if at all, did that influence your current style?

All of our designers have a college degree in Interior Design. We also take continuing education classes and attend several trade shows each year. We stay up to date on the latest products in our industry. This industry is constantly changing and we are never done learning. I think because of this, it allows us to have an appreciation for all different styles and keeps us up to date on the latest design trends.

When working in the idea phase with a new client, how do you go about getting a feel for their tastes and their aesthetic?

We always start with a consultation and walk through their house with them and ask a ton of questions to get a better sense of how they envision living in their space. Once we have a better understanding of their style and the style of the home, we give our clients a little homework. We put together their own personal design board and ask them to pick apart every photo and tell us everything they like and don’t like about each photo. Their feedback helps us really get inside their head and define their personal style.

A PORCH TRANSFORMED

Jones and Hedges Custom Builders specializes in residential custom new home builds, renovations, additions, and more. By leveraging their over 20 years of combined experience building in the Charlotte area, Josh Jones and Kyle Hedges create memorable spaces designed for liveability.

The homeowners for this project were seeking an overall update in all the most important areas of the home that they used daily.

“This space in the picture was the old porch just off the family room that looks out on the back yard,” Josh explains.

When the family added a pool during the renovation, they wanted the space to instead serve as a room where anyone could sit, have a cocktail, and be able to look out over the new pool.

Interior designer Brooke Adler adds that the homeowners

wanted this sunroom to have a speakeasy-feel while still being light and airy. “We used velvet curtains, but in a green that wasn't too dark, a bright and colorful vintage rug, and fun burnout velvet ochre pillows and local artwork to bring it all together.”

A local Greenville-based artist hand-painted the wall, and all of the seating and the buffet are vintage. The brick floor in a herringbone pattern by Jones and Hedges also elevated the look of the room. The client sourced the light fixture.

The lamps are from Bradburn Home, the art is from Amy Lowder, and the tables are Four Hands. The pillows are Schumacher, the rug is from Nashville Rug Gallery, and Brooke sourced the antique radio from Brevard. — info — jhcustombuilders.com / @joneshedges_charlotte

COFFEE HOUR

Woodshop QC is a leading provider of fine custom cabinetry and furniture pieces in the greater Charlotte area. The team collaborates with custom builders and interior designers, or directly with homeowners, to bring each unique project to life.

When it came to this custom home coffee and wine bar, one of the main goals for Charlie Henderson and his team was to create a space that would be both functional and eye-catching. It was also important to the homeowners that they would create a design that was cohesive with the other textures and pat-

terns used throughout the larger kitchen.

“The same white oak from the kitchen was used here, as [was] the chevron pattern. Also, the simple curve on the white oak shelf corbels echoes the archway curves and the simple cove crown moulding,” Charlie explains.

Woodshop QC used all solid wood white oak, milled and processed by hand in the company’s workshop. The cabinetry, doors, and drawers were custom-made to perfectly suit the homeowners’ vision.

A HISTORIC TREASURE GOES MODERN

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 67 TRAVEL ACCOMMODATIONS • PLACES • ADVENTURES
words SUNNY HUBLER / photos courtesy HIGH HAMPTON High Hampton in Cashiers offers travelers a luxurious mountain retreat.

HHigh Hampton, a renowned nature lover’s paradise in Cashiers, NC, first opened in 1933. The 1,400-acre property sits at the edge of a peaceful private lake and offers visitors sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. While it was well loved by visitors during its 100 years of existence, the historic nature of the Inn presented some challenges too: The Inn was unable to accommodate guests year round due to a lack of central heating and air, rooms were small, and some of the property was in need of a refresh.

In 2021, High Hampton re-opened its doors after undergoing a thoughtful two-year restoration and update directed by the same team who operates Blackberry Farm in Tennessee, one of the Great Smokies most acclaimed resorts. Protected as part of the National Registry of Historic Places, High Hampton was given modern amenities alongside all the charm that comes with a century-year-old property.

In addition to larger guest rooms and newer amenities, the update also included the redevelopment of the golf course, new club amenities and private real estate offerings. The previously summer-only destination now takes reservations year-round. Guests can enjoy the lake during high season but can now also enjoy winter hikes, fall foliage, and an indulgent holiday season.

High Hampton stands as a singular rustic resort in the area. There are twelve rooms in the main inn and multiple cottages throughout the property as well as several restaurants to choose from on-property as well, ranging from fine dining to casual lunches or to-go food. The rooms don’t have TVs, but they do have large soaking tubs, rocking chairs on the porches, and fluffy bedding. Breakfast and dinner at the main dining room are included in your room rate, as well as access equipment for kayaking and canoeing and amenities like the pool and golf course.

Eat at The Dining Room and The Tavern, or one of the three other restaurants at the adjacent recreational Club at High Hampton. While all High Hampton venues and menus are distinct, they share a common thread: each features classic, regional cuisine and each is complemented by expertly curated wine and cocktail programs.

The property allows guests to escape, relax, play golf and tennis in the afternoon, or take a sunset hike through the dahlia gardens. Canoe or fish the lake, or simply relax on the property’s adirondack chairs and lawn beds to take in views of Rock Mountain, Chimney Top Mountain, and Whiteside Mountain.

For a relaxed retreat that’s the perfect blend of rustic-meets-elevated, High Hampton is well worth a visit. It’s a roughly three-hour drive from Charlotte, and the surrounding town of Cashiers offers visitors tons of stunning scenery: waterfalls, lakes, hiking trails, gardens, and more.

A LUXURY RESORT GOES MICRO

Flat Mountain Farm elevates the experience of a stay in Highlands, NC.

HHighlands is a cozy, small North Carolina town located just about three and a half hours west of Charlotte and two hours north of Atlanta. At a population of roughly 3,000 yearround residents, it’s nestled within the Nantahala National Forest and sits on a plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains. There are many ways to enjoy Highlands, but Flat Mountain Farm stands apart from the rest. Christopher and Margaret Shutze, a husband and wife duo behind acclaimed interior design firm Shutze Studio, purchased the 28 acre property from an eighth generation Highlands resident.

At the time, though it had fallen into some measure of disrepair, Margaret and Chris both saw heaps of potential in the property’s antique log cabins and barns. Margaret’s background is in international hospitality, completing prestigious projects such

as Boca Raton Resort and Club and Four Seasons Vail, while Chris’s is in creating specialty homes and custom furniture.

The couple embarked upon a project, during 2020 no less, that took them over a year to finish: remodeling the cabins, moving and then updating an antique barn, and renovating their own home on the property where they reside today with their children.

The doors to Flat Mountain Farm were officially opened in March 2021.

Through the careful renovation process and the couples’ expertise in thoughtful design, today their historic rhododendron farm operates as a luxury micro-resort available for everything from weddings and rehearsal dinners to corporate retreats, celebrations, private dinner parties, and getaways.

On the Farm, you’ll find three homes, a barn, a pristine private lake and an expansive lawn. Altogether, the mountainside retreat can house up to 27 overnight or hosts up to 200 guests during the day. The design is entirely intentional: refined but rustic, historic but up-to-date. Each lodging and venue is effortlessly stylish while offering a nod to the natural setting surrounding.

The Peregrine is the largest option on the estate with four bedrooms and four and a half baths. There is a large chef's kitchen, a library and a formal living room with a stone fireplace. There is also a formal dining area with a wine fridge and bar.

There’s also the Kingfisher, an antique log cabin that was originally located in Burlington, NC. It has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and sleeps 8-10 people. Finally, there’s The Wren. Located across from The Barn, it’s the smallest of the three with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and two living rooms (sleeping up to six). Expect details like vaulted wood ceilings, a private balcony with seating and a clawfoot tub for soaking.

Once there, visitors have many ways to enjoy all that Highlands and the Farm offer: Borrow a canoe, visit the cut-flower garden, sit by the firepit, and soak in your private hot tub. Or, venture off-site where fishing and hiking abound. Pay a visit to one of Highlands’ many waterfalls (like Whitewater Falls, Sliding Rock or Bust Your Butt Falls, a popular swimming hole where you can jump off a boulder into the Cullasaja River).

As you head into Highlands, pay a visit to Madison’s Restaurant and Wine Garden where you can relax with a glass outside and take in the beautiful views. Calders Coffee Cafe is a veteranowned company and rumored to be the best coffee in town. For those with a sweet tooth, try SweeTreats, with ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes and more to quench your cravings.

Orvis Charlotte upgrades to a new location.

IIn 1856, the first Orvis store opened in Manchester, Vermont, offering locals high quality fly fishing equipment. Since then, Orvis has become a household name around the country and especially in the sporting South. The Charlotte area, in particular, is home to many Orvis shoppers, who will be thrilled to learn that the beloved store at Phillips Place is relocating to a bigger location in the Strawberry Hill shopping center off Providence Road in Cotswold.

In addition to fly fishing gear, Orvis’ product selection has grown since the 19th century to include a wide assortment of men’s and women’s sportswear, travel accessories, dog products, and technical apparel and gear for wingshooting and sporting clays.

“Our products are specifically geared to serve a purpose in the outdoors, whether you’re casting to tailing redfish from the bow of a flats skiff in Charleston, or walking your dog in the rain down Fairview Road,” says Mary Schaeffer, District Manager at Orvis. Besides products, Orvis stores also offer a range of relevant services. For example, the same trust that customers have learned to place in Orvis products can also extend to a network of lodges, outfitters, and guides, plus hunting dog trainers and breeders endorsed by Orvis. This network powers Orvis’ international sporting and eco-travel agency, which facilitates adventure travel for novices and experts alike. Furthermore, fishing and shooting schools help keep the sports that are at the heart of Orvis stores alive, recruiting new outdoor enthusiasts

to these sports and polishing seasoned outdoorsmen. In fact, the Charlotte location offers free Fly Fishing 101 classes, through which over 4,000 people have learned to fly fish.

The new Charlotte location will have a dedicated classroom space to educate even more future-fly fishermen. Additionally, its larger size will be better equipped to incorporate social spaces and a defined area for customers to access travel booking resources. This relocation arrives on the heels of a new Orvis storefront in the Charlotte area, which opened in Birkdale in 2023 and offers a scaled down version of the Strawberry Hill store, including its designated service areas.

Opening weekend for the new store was a huge success. The event was held during Orvis’ Great Giveback Days, a month-long event occurring in the spring and the fall during which Orvis retail stores around the nation partner with local nonprofits. Typically, these nonprofits operate in the conservation sphere and receive a percentage of store profits. This year, the Charlotte store partnered with the Anne Springs Close Greenway. Previously, the Charlotte store has partnered with Catawba Lands Conservancy, Catawba Riverkeepers, Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, CCA, ASPCA, and Casting Carolinas.

Throughout the year, the store hosts monthly social and educational events. For more information about upcoming events, classes and trips, connect with the store on Instagram and join the mailing list at the link in their bio, visit the store’s webpage, or call 704-571-6100.

DESIGN & CRAFTSMANSHIP REFINED

SB Interiors, Garrett P. Nelson Studio, and Gerrard Builders deliver a home and design masterclass.

AA young family with two kids (three if you count the dog, which we do) sought a space to settle in the Myers Park neighborhood of Charlotte that would exude classical refinement. Their hope was to create a space that felt elegant yet still comfortable, timeless but personal. So they enlisted the help of three of Charlotte’s finest professionals in the home industry—architect Garrett Nelson, Bryan Gerrard of Gerrard Builders, and interior designer Shannon Bowman of SB Interiors — to build the custom home of their dreams.

Throughout the home, a primary goal was to maximize natural light via ample and well-placed windows. Architect Garret Nelson drafted a smart floor plan that accomplished

precisely this, even folding windows into statement features like the grand stairwell and breakfast nook. A secondary goal was to ensure functionality. Between having kids at home and the rituals of daily life, the family’s lifestyle requires durability and efficiency, which Bryan Gerrard accounted for in a flawlessly built home and Shannon Bowman reflected in her design selections. Pops of organic texture, dramatic colors, and statement lighting complement and add to the character established through the house’s bones, such as curvature throughout the architecture. Textured wallcoverings add drama in some rooms while neutral velvets, linens, or weaves are leveraged to soften deeper tones where needed.

86 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
EXCLUSIVES

The main living room, which flows seamlessly to the breakfast nook and kitchen, is one of the standout spaces in the home. Here, Bowman took a soft approach with little pops of color here and there. Bowman added texture and originality by installing upholstered cabinetry along the TV wall. Custom horn cabinet hardware and antique brass nailheads inject additional personality.

Outside, the U shape of the back of the house neatly frames a finely landscaped courtyard, easily visible to the interior via the house’s ample windows. A pool folly, near the pool at the back of the property provides an additional space to gather with bifolding doors to open up the space to the outdoor living. The covered porch features an outdoor kitchen, bar seating area, and a beautiful fireplace.

The team behind this Myers Park home sourced materials and services from a troop of local and custom vendors, including, Level 5 Finish Group for paint and drywall, Southern Architectural Woodwork who created the custom curved staircase and railings, Charlotte-based Harkey Tile & Stone who provided the countertops, Hardwood Creations for Cabinets and Curated Surfaces for hardwoods, Design Services of Charlotte who created the custom dining banquette, and Finx Faux Finishing who hand-painted the ceiling in the formal dining room.

Almost every detail of this new Myers Park build was, quite literally, made for the family that now resides within. The result is an English manor style home that is equal parts refined and functional.
