Natural Talent
words KATE CARLSON / photos JAMEY PRICE or courtesy TARA HUNT
Charlotte artist Tara Hunt is a master of expressing with the brush. She often focuses on her natural surroundings, the types of spaces she most deeply treasures.
Raised in Fort Lauderdale, the natural landscape of the ocean, tropic woodlands, and flora became intrinsic to Tara’s identity. Notably, she first began her artistic exploration through the medium of photography, focusing on capturing the lighting of the ocean’s waves and lively composition of flowers. These images served as Tara’s source of reference for many of her early paintings.
An interview with the talented Charlotte artist Tara Hunt.

Her choice to start painting began at home: Surrounded by artists in her family, including both her mother and grandmother, she was particularly “immersed in art from a young age” and learned from their expertise with oil painting.
Tara went on to earn a business degree at the distinguished Boston College Carroll School of Management. Though her main focus may have seemed quite different, Tara continued to cultivate her artistic talents through elective courses in art history. Now, she explains that alongside her thriving business career, painting has “remained an integral part of my life.”

HAfter moving to the Charlotte area in 1998 for business, the inspiration Tara garnered from the Carolina wilderness, especially its coasts and mountains, breathed a new perspective into her robust artistic vision of the natural world.
“The majestic mountains and serene coastal seascapes of the region captivated my imagination and inspired me to explore new artistic directions.”
The natural world continually brings new depths to explore in her elegant interpretations, frequently involving detailed pattern and repetition, “emphasizing the intricate details and textures found in nature.”
For instance, capturing the dynamic force of waves with a thick swipe of a paint knife versus the more detailed delicate marks necessary for a floral arrangement. All in all, Tara explains her general approach as stemming from a blend of “impressionistic realism with decorative naturalism…The feedback I receive from viewers is that my work makes them feel calm, uplifted, and connected to the natural world.”
Tara’s dedication to the craft allows her to achieve her stated aim to “transport viewers to these magical dreamscapes.” Most recently, her work has been displayed at the Guild of Charlotte Artists pop-up event at the Mint Museum. In the future, her main goal is to present a solo exhibition, focusing on a deeper exploration of waterworks.
Tara holds true to her mission of hoping to give back to the community of avid appreciators of her many masterpieces.
“Whether working on commissions or personal projects, I am driven by a desire to create lasting memories.”

Jerald Melberg Gallery recently celebrated its 40th anniversary in Charlotte, and one of its artists has been with the gallery from the very beginning: Charles Basham. Charles received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from
Kent State University in his native state of Ohio, where he still resides on the family farm. Continuum features the artist’s striking landscapes in both oil and pastel inspired by the place he calls home.

Ready For Liftoff
IIn 2021, Blumenthal Arts, the Carolinas’ nonprofit hub for arts and entertainment, brought an exhibit to Camp North End called Immersive Van Gogh. The exhibition, which was a multi-sensory experience that sought to place viewers inside the artists’ inner consciousness while also evoking his most legendary works, was a rousing success, breaking ticket sales records and exceeding $40 million in local economic impact.
Tom Gabbard, CEO of Blumenthal Arts had long perceived a growing appetite for creative experiences that place audiences within the art, rather than just in front of it, and the success of the Van Gogh exhibit confirmed his perceptions. He began to dream of a permanent installation space in the Queen City dedicated to immersive exhibits, where the nonprofit could continue to develop and experiment with experiential programming.
Enter: Charlotte Pipe and Foundry. This family-owned business occupied a 55.5 acre swath of property between Uptown
and South End for 122 years. In 2023, the iron foundry relocated to Oakboro, but Charlotte Pipe retained ownership of the land, partnering with developers, architects, land planning firms, branding firms, and the city of Charlotte to create a new mixedused space, to be called the Iron District. Like Camp North End, the property eventually will host retail and office spaces, as well as residential areas. Currently, though, the Iron District has one tenant: Blumenthal Arts, which has taken over two former factory warehouses to create Blume Studios, Charlotte’s new hub for immersive exhibits.
The larger warehouse, which sprawls across 32,000 square feet, is called Stage 1, while the smaller, 12,734 square foot warehouse next door is called Stage 2. The two buildings will host not only interactive exhibits, but also art installations, shows, and multi-media events. In the fall, Stage 1 launched its inaugural program Space Explorers: The Infinite. Participants can expect

The Family Profession
Meet the team at Smile Moore Dental in Cotswold.
DDr. Durning Moore, D.M.D, was preceded in his field and his family by two generations of dentists: a grandfather and a father who still maintains a practice in Charleston. When Dr. Moore reflects on a childhood spent surrounded by dentists, what he remembers most keenly is not instructions to floss every night or monologues about the evils of plaque buildup. Rather, it is his parents’ presence in his life that stars in his recollections. They showed up to every game, recital, conference, fundraiser, and everything in between, and when they arrived they were truly present. This, coupled with the impact of undergoing his own smile transformation, is what steered Moore to the family profession.
Determined to find that same balance of professional and personal life, Dr. Moore purchased his own practice five years ago. In a fitting stroke of serendipity that further cinched the family connection to the profession, he discovered his wife was pregnant with their first child on the same day he signed the paperwork making the practice his own. Before coming under his ownership, the practice had been family-owned for over half a century, which allowed a culture to foster that was not far from Moore’s vision.
“Being a small practice, we operate more like a family. Each person plays a vital role, and their expertise directly impacts the care we provide to our patients,” says Dr. Moore. “Having

a team of experts allows us to deliver exceptional service and helps maintain the trust our patients place in us.”
That trust is also earned through the practice’s patient-centered philosophy of care and tailored treatments. As a small practice, Smile Moore has the freedom to go above and beyond when it comes to the thoroughness of their assessments and exams. Then, they take a conservative approach to treatment, preserving the natural structure and function of patients’ teeth to the fullest extent possible.
Moreover, Dr. Moore and his team take care to put their patients at ease. “We completely understand that many people feel nervous about going to the dentist, and at Smile Moore, we’re here to help make the experience as comfortable as possible,” explains Moore. They do so by fostering open communication, encour-

aging clients to share what makes them anxious, as well as be clear about anything Smile Moore can do to help. They also offer a “comfort menu,” consisting of noise-cancelling headphones, blankets, and TVs on the ceiling, to help put patients at ease while they’re in the chair. “We’re committed to making your visit as positive and stress-free as possible,” says Dr. Moore.
Ultimately, the goal at Smile Moore is to empower patients to understand and take charge of their oral health, which in turn affects their overall well-being. Like his father and his father’s father, Dr. Moore has built a practice and a culture that is uniquely suited to do just that.

Fit For A Queen
Joe and Katy Kindred usher in a new era of Uptown dining.
IIn 2015, I sat outside a small alley in Davidson, NC talking with Katy Kindred about the restaurant she had just recently opened with her husband, Joe Kindred. I’d moved south just a few months before, and this was one of my first interviews in my new city. I recall being charmed by the real family soul behind the business—a restaurant bearing their last name, led by a husband and wife team who brought equal measures of expertise, and located just walking distance away from where they lived with their young children.

A lot has happened since. Today, Joe is a five-time James Beard Foundation Award Best Chef Southeast semifinalist, and he and Katy have brought to life three other concepts, Hello Sailor, milkbread, and now, Albertine.
On a raining, dark evening in September, we showed up to our reservations at Albertine on Tryon Street Uptown (I’d be remiss to not mention that “downtown” is the Kindreds’ preferred vernacular).
AThere’s a lot that’s already been said about Uptown Charlotte’s dining rooms, and it was clear as soon as we crossed the threshold that this was something distinct. What looked on the outside to be standard fare for an Uptown building quickly transformed into a front room that, in addition to the host stand, is home to the bar and several sets of banquette seating. It’s warm and elevated inside, with large swaths of black and white marble, wood, and earth tones. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer lots of light, and views of the city.
Interestingly, when deciding to open Albertine, the opportunity for the space came first and the concept came second.
“We wanted to help be a key member of defining the downtown restaurant scene,” Joe explains. “Charlotte is growing at such a fast pace I think I'd be foolish to not want to tap into the Center City of the Queen City. When we open a restaurant, we like to consider the space, neighborhood, the greater ‘need’ in the market, and our own curiosity, of course. That said, we were excited to take on this palette of flavors and techniques. We are always students and this keeps us curious about a whole new part of the world that is so abundantly rich with culture. It [the menu] was largely inspired by travel and genuine curiosity.”
Heading into the main dining room through a small doorway next to the bar is where I truly felt the transportation take place—I lost the sense that I was in Charlotte in the best way, like when you step into a well executed speakeasy or a darkened theater.
In the main dining area, Katy chose rich greens and dark grays alongside a lot more marble, plus velvety fabrics, pops of artwork large and small, and a mix of delightful tableside lamps and larger, more dramatic fixtures. She tapped local millwork and furniture makers Tenon & Tailored and Holder Restaurant Furniture to help bring the vision to life—one that she says is so intentionally luxurious and alluring as a nod to the namesake: Queen Charlotte’s mother, Duchess Elizabeth Albertine.
Once we’d settled into our seats, it was time for food and beverage to take center stage. If you’ve been to Kindred, you won’t be surprised to learn that their second fine dining concept is built around service, which is where Katy’s background continues to shine.
“I really enjoy training the team and rolling up my sleeves when we open, it's too much fun,” she says. “Beyond that, my fulltime job when I am not in design mode is supporting our amazing leaders so they can keep the service standards where they need to be.”
The talented Blake Pope once again joined the Kindreds in opening Albertine to lend his marketing and creative talents on behalf of Kindred Studio. Then Joe Crivolio and Danny Ike tag team the beverage program, Joe with cocktails and Danny with wine. The beverage program focuses on classic flavors and modern updates. Cocktails are clean and minimally garnished while the wine program features red

wines that work well with food cooked on fire and whites that celebrate the brine of the sea.
Under the direction of chef Joe Kindred and team, Albertine serves contemporary cuisine inspired by the greater Mediterranean basin and by Joe’s particular POV on the American South. The menu will evolve across seasons, and, much like Kindred, it seems like Joe is always playing with flavor profiles or getting inspired by surprising flavors.
We started with the meze platter, an opportunity to order six small dishes alongside man’oushe sourdough flatbread and crudite. We also enjoyed raw NC oysters, crispy pickle-brined quail, crispy charred malawach with caviar, and the hanger

steak and frites. The wine pairings were meticulous, and the service was excellent.
The Kindreds upped the ante on fine dining in the Charlotte area for the first time nearly a decade ago, earning accolades nationwide. This is just the beginning for Albertine, and I for one am eager to see how their fingerprint might shape the Uptown scene moving forward. Competition breeds excellence, and the Kindreds have once again set one hell of a bar.

A Local Staple Expands
DTR opens its third location in Plaza Midwood with a brand new menu.
TThis summer, Jaffer and Zoe Kovic opened their third Dilworth Tasting Room, this time in Plaza Midwood. After starting in (of course) the Dilworth neighborhood, DTR expanded in 2021 to SouthPark. Their Plaza opening feels like a natural outgrowth of the concept, and the team brought plenty of unique character to the original idea here, too.
The foundational idea behind DTR remains: This is a restaurant, wine and cocktail bar with a true neighborhood hangout feel. DTR Plaza has a cozy but spacious indoor dining area and bar, alongside a large patio that can seat over 70 guests. The inside seating area features large murals painted by Meredith Riggins Designs and a lounge-like, sleek modern design. Outside,
there’s plenty of greenery and even a few yard games to enjoy.
The menu at the Plaza location diverges from the original, offering a unique menu of Mediterranean-inspired dishes alongside an extensive drink selection. Many of the dishes are inspired by the cuisine of Croatia, a country on the coast of the Adriatic Sea that’s known for its fresh grilled seafood, handmade pastas, and hearty meat dishes.
In keeping, DTR Plaza offers traditional Croatian cuttlefish risotto in ink, grilled octopus, lamb chops, and more. The DTR Plaza wine menu is predictably well appointed, and the cocktail menu includes a mix of classics, rotating seasonal cocktails, and plenty of non-alcoholic options.

“We started Dilworth Tasting Room in 2017 as a humble wine retail shop, offering salads, flatbreads, and cheese plates,” owners Zoe and Jaffer Kovic shared. “As the neighborhood thrived, so did the demand for a wider range of culinary options. In response, we upgraded our equipment, crafted innovative cocktails, and expanded our menu... We are very proud to be a locally grown business, embedded in the vibrant and fun Charlotte neighborhoods where we’re able to bring a piece of our Croatian heritage, along with inspirations from our Mediterranean travels…”

Pan Seared Trout
From James Beard nominated Chef Greg Collier comes another restaurant dedicated to his love (and expertise) of Southern, seasonal food. From farm-fresh produce to locally sourced meats and seafood, every dish is thoughtfully crafted to showcase the best of each season.

3rd & Fernwood’s wonderful menu allows you to select a protein and pair it with any one of several sides or the four salads. The pan seared trout pairs nicely with just about any of these, and comes topped with a rich, uniquely flavored roasted okra gravy.

Pescado A Lo Macho
Calle Sol expanded recently to SouthPark, where it continues to diversify the Latin food scene in Charlotte by serving traditional Cuban and Peruvian dishes with flair.
The “pescado a lo macho” is Calle Sol’s version of a classic. The dish features a fresh, perfectly

seared market catch served with a slightly spicy tomato and aji amarillo chile sauce. Aji amarillo is a Peruvian chili pepper with a distinct, slightly sweet flavor, with a moderate to high level of heat. The fish is served with jasmine rice to offset the spice and a microgreen salad.

YAMA LOSO'S
Lady In Red
Yama, a Japanese restaurant from the same owners of Baku, opened earlier this year in Lower South End. The LoSo location joins the prior two, Waverly and SouthPark, in offering a menu of sushi, kushiyaki (a Japanese technique for skewered and grilled meats and vegetables), and small share-
able dishes. There’s also a small craft cocktail menu that pairs nicely with the food menu. The Lady in Red is an excellent, light addition to the sushi in particular. The cocktail is made up of vodka, a dash of pomegranate liqueur, a splash of cranberry juice, and finished with yuzu syrup for brightness.

Quality Craftsmanship
Bespoke builds by Blockhaus.
Jwords ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE
John Bryner saw a need in the Charlotte area. Home builders and craftsmen might abound, but tradesmen with a true commitment to quality and a keen attention to detail were noticeably scarce. Thus, in 2016, Blockhaus was born, offering custom, highquality installation of interior moldings and cabinetry. Blockhaus Custom Homes followed a few years later, expanding Bryner’s business to also include general contracting services for renovations, remodels, and new construction.
W“While there are many home builders in the Charlotte area, only a handful aim to do a quality-driven job instead of a budgetor timeframe-driven one,” says Bryner. At Blockhaus, quality and craftsmanship are of paramount importance and, as a result, Blockhaus is able to produce beautiful homes equipped to house families for generations.
You could argue that Bryner has been on track to enter the home industry since before he was even born. His grandfather, Clarence Bryner, was a handyman who enjoyed working with his hands, a satisfaction that John Bryner discovered for himself during high school shop classes. After attending trade school in Pittsburgh, Bryner entered the industry. Along his professional path, he encountered an array of mentors who helped Bryner develop the skills and knowledge he would need to succeed as an employee and, later, as a business owner.
A particularly pivotal influence was Bryner’s first boss, for whom he began working while still in trade school and who became a role model for entrepreneurship. “That's where the bug was planted, that I someday wanted to be my own boss,” recalls Bryner. “Of course, I had no idea how difficult that actually is, but nonetheless, the idea was there.” Years later, after moving to Charlotte, honing his skills, refining his leadership abilities, networking with clients and industry professionals, and working with his wife to develop a brand, Bryner was ready to launch Blockhaus.
“At the end of the day, Blockhaus hangs our hat on craftsmanship and quality, and we love working with clients who want the same,” says Bryner.
He is adamant that, before embarking on a renovation or remodel, clients should fully understand the time commitment to their project. “One of the main challenges in our industry is establishing a realistic schedule for projects,” explains Bryner. “Frequently, we encounter schedules that are overcrowded with all the trades scheduled on top of each other, leading to a decline in quality.” To help ensure quality remains a top priority throughout the project, the Blockhaus team works hard to set expectations about project duration at the outset of any engagement and then maintain transparency until the final wrap. This goes a long way not only toward producing an outstanding product, but also toward fostering positive experiences for Blockhaus clients (and Blockhaus team members, for that matter).
Positive experiences for all parties is a business-critical mission for Blockhaus. Since day one, Bryner has viewed people as Blockhaus’ greatest asset: “I believe Blockhaus has some of the best individuals in the industry. It's a group of people who constantly learn, grow, and evolve to be the best they can be every day, and we are better off every day because of it. Treating those people with dignity, respect, and understanding is the most important thing a builder can do to get the best possible end product and to improve everyone's lives.”

Home Sweet Home
CChelsea Design | Build is a boutique custom home builder working across Charlotte. This particular mudroom, from a project in Marvin, NC, came together when the client wanted to recreate a popular mudroom design by Shea McGee… but with some personalized tweaks.
Co-owner Larissa Fontana shares that the client wanted this space to work hard and look beautiful.
“The Dutch door at the back lets the air in on beautiful days, and the location of the door provides easy access for the kids to come in from the yard or the outdoor shower, come into this space to knock off all their dirt and wash hands before entering the rest of the house,” Larissa says.
“Also, entering this space through the garage provides a convenient place to drop shoes, coats and bags, and hide them behind closed doors and drawers.”
The lighting is by Visual Comfort, the floor tile is travertine herringbone, the cabinet hardware is Rejuvenation, the faucet is Kohler and the windows are Pella. The countertop material is natural soapstone and the cabinetry is by Mint Hill cabinets.

A Beautiful Breakfast Nook
An enviable design from the talented Brooke Adler.
TThis breakfast nook by Brooke Adler Interiors is part of a larger Myers Park project the team completed for a busy family of four with two working parents.
Brooke explained that, from a design perspective, the client was open to many colors and patterns, so she worked to create variation, interest, cohesiveness and flow between spaces.
This room continues the aesthetic reflected throughout the home: It’s an updated traditional look with no fear of color, shapes and pattern, evidenced in the pop of art and greenery featured here.
The styling is by Ashley Hotham Cox and Todd Carter from Sonoma Builders served as the contractor.

AEntertain in Ease
Alair Homes is an award-winning custom home building and renovation company owned and operated by Duane Johns and Roger Ketchum. They provide both design and build solutions, helping individuals and families enjoy happier, healthier, more productive and more comfortable lifestyles.
When it comes to this lovely kitchen from a recent Charlotte project, designer Natalie Fey shares that the guiding design principle was an open concept for entertaining family and friends.
“She [the client] wanted a very large island and plenty of barstools for friends to gather around the kitchen and living room,” Fey says. “Another request was comfortable modern upholstery as well as a large tv for watching sports. Lastly, the clients build a real wood burning fire every single day from fall through winter, so a wood burning fireplace was a must have as they enjoy relaxing by the fire with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.”
The interior design is by Celadon Interiors, cabinets are Cabinets Trim & More, and the millwork is Interior Woods.

Elevated Luxury
SSummit a peak on a clear morning in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and you’re rewarded with a golden light view of ridges and valleys smoothed to dimples and mounds, evoking the calming motion of a churning sea caught in a freeze frame. Now imagine that, instead of earning this view via a steep hike, it is the backdrop at your home, visible from every window, balcony, porch and entryway, as is the case for the residents of this stunning Reynolds Parkway home near Blowing Rock.
Built into and around this sprawling home are ample outdoor spaces to take maximum advantage of the views and beautiful western North Carolina weather. A spacious patio on the roof of the second story includes an uncovered sitting area arranged around an outdoor fireplace and television. Below, a covered sitting area with fireplace adjoins a fully
equipped, outdoor kitchen. An infinity pool and hot tub are bookended by a balcony with glass railings that stretches almost entirely across the back of the house. At the ground level, a basin catches runoff from the infinity pool above. A dining and cocktail patio tucked at the base of the house provides more options for outdoor dining, while an observation deck and footpath offer a different view of the surrounding mountains.
Both the exterior and interior of the house incorporate stone, walnut colored wood, black accents, and glass. These materials support modern and Aspen aesthetics that blend to hint at the home’s natural surrounding while remaining entirely elegant. Within, 11,000 heated square feet encompass four bedrooms, five full bathrooms, four half-bath-

Floor to ceiling windows on the second story seamlessly blend outdoor living spaces and views. In the primary interior living room, a stone focal wall and fireplace ground the space, while high ceilings and a wall of glass accordion doors support an airy and well-lit atmosphere. In this part of the property, an open floor plan seamlessly connects the living room to the dining room and kitchen, where an island with a waterfall countertop seats six.
On the other side of the living room’s stone wall, a stunning floating staircase with serious main character energy claims the attention of anyone approaching the front of the

The home, constructed by MBI Builders, is located in the Blue Ridge Mountain Club. Residents of this luxury community enjoy access to premiere amenities like curated events and activities, private dining, the Chetola Sporting Reserve, and more — that is, if they can ever tear themselves away from this gorgeous mountainside home.

a dash of whimsy, The Dunlin enchants even as its whitewashed rooms, oak floors, light green accents, and linen fabrics soothe.
72 guest rooms and suites offer guests a range of accommodations from which to choose. There are four versions of The Dunlin guest room: Village King, Sawgrass King, Riverfront King, and Dunlin Double Queen. All guest rooms, which start at 490 square feet, have private, furnished terraces—many with riverfront views, and a beguiling Southern cottage-style interior.
The other lodging option, suites, include at least 740 square feet of living area and are intended to offer guests a space that feels like a home away from home. Choose between a one- or two-bedroom suite, but regardless expect to discover spacious living and dining rooms and (here’s where things get really dreamy) outdoor soaking tubs perfect for relaxing amid the sounds of the marsh and in the light of the stars. In addition to one- and two-bedroom suites, The Dunlin also offers a private two-bedroom cottage called Sweetbay, where expansive windows and a wraparound porch blend outdoor and indoor, and a fireplace promises maximum comfort and coziness.

memorable to extraordinary. At The Dunlin, there are two primary dining options: Willet Room and Linnette’s. Willet Room is the place to visit for a light lunch, afternoon sweet tea, or evening cocktail and hors d'oeuvres. Picture deep couches, plush armchairs, white shiplap walls, more green accents, and a terrace overlooking the Kiawah River. Linnette’s also capitalizes on expansive river views and coastal breezes with tall windows and a terrace, but here guests will find a more robust menu encompassing breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Seafood-forward, down-home, and modern, Linnette’s dishes draw from the water just beyond the door, as well as neighboring farms to craft fresh, local comforts for every season.
In visiting The Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection, guests find an oasis so immersive that it’s hard to believe Charleston is less than half an hour away. At this home away from home, to retreat means to reconnec—with people, with stillness, with adventure, with coastal wildlife, with Southern tastes—and, in doing so, discover the power of being present.

A Weekend In Hillsborough
The perfect itinerary for a two-day trip to an underrated small Carolina town.
SSeveral months back, I stopped in Durham on the way to the Outer Banks. It’s about midway between Charlotte and the coast. I didn’t feel like driving the entire six hours in one haul so I got a hotel room at The Durham and, honestly, I had a blast. I really enjoyed Durham as a city, and had several excellent meals there. While out and about I ran into someone who mentioned I needed to visit nearby Hillsborough. They said it had a little somethin’ for everyone. I didn’t have time on that particular trip, but the town stuck in my head and when I did have the opportunity to return to the area, the small town delivered.
From first impressions, Hillsborough seems like such a great town to live in and it’s an amazing weekend road trip. There’s a lot of history, a quaint downtown, some amazing restaurants, a lot of outdoor activities (particularly for central NC), and the people are so nice and a lil eclectic.
So, I wanted to share my itinerary because I enjoyed the trip so much. If you go, let us know!
Friday Night: Arrival & Settling In
Check-In at The Colonial Inn
Arriving in Hillsborough on Friday evening, I checked into The Colonial Inn, a historic landmark dating back to 1838. The inn was decked out in holiday accoutrement at the time but still exuded Southern charm. Check-in was quick and the people checking us in were so nice.
Despite this hotel being almost two centuries old, the rooms are fresh with a transitional design. They’re also very large. The shower was massive, which was a pleasant surprise.
The best part of this inn is that it is situated right on the edge of downtown Hillsborough, so it provided the perfect base for exploring the town's historic homes and vibrant streets, while being quaint and peaceful.
Dinner at The Nomad
I ventured right across the street to The Nomad, known for its global flavors. I started with the samosa, and then for the main course, I ordered the butter chicken. It was rich and delicious. The atmosphere combined with great service and amazing food and cocktails (I had a kiwi drink that was so good) make it a must eat.
Live Music at Nash Street Tavern
After dinner, I didn’t know where to go, so I asked the bartender, and he suggested Nash Street Tavern, a local spot with live music and a relaxed vibe. So that’s exactly what I did. This is a true dive bar. It's really chill inside, the light is low with a red glare, the bar is welcoming, and the best part was the music. The musicians there weren’t playing on stage though. They were all at a table near the bar playing their fiddles and banjos sitting down. It was almost like they were just guys that came for a beer and decided to play some music, too. It was super laid back and a nice nightcap.
Saturday: Exploring Hillsborough’s Sights, Flavors, and History
A Strong Morning Coffee and Croissant at Cup A Joe
I was very unaware how eclectic Hillsborough was! It’s got some hippie in it which I like. There were old timers with feathers in

their caps sitting on the patio and what appeared to be younger college aged kids getting some studying done. The people combined with the funky atmosphere gave it a top tier coffee shop vibe, and my oat milk latte and croissant were very delicious. After coffee, it was time to go see something I’ve seen many an Instagram and Tik Tok post about: The Occoneechee Speedway.
The Historic Occoneechee Speedway
This is more of a park and walking trail than it is an intact dirt track, but it’s still cool because there are some fun historical parts and pieces of the track lying around. You can see the old gates that welcome guests to NASCAR’s inaugural 1949 season. There’s the original men’s room, concession stands, bleachers, start tower signage, and a couple cool—albeit rusted out—Nascars, including a 1940s Chevy Coupe Super Deluxe and a 1956 Dodge Coronet! I thought it would be cool, so I had to bring the film camera out to take some shots of old cars with a camera from the same era.
Lunch at Los Altos
For lunch, I headed back into town to Los Altos, a restaurant with an inviting patio nestled behind all these snake plants, so you feel like you are dining in a lush, tropical outdoor area. I liked it a lot. I ordered what they’re known for, their burrito and queso dip, and it was quite delicious. I would definitely go back.
Shopping and Art
I’m not really a shopper, but I wanted to check out what downtown had to offer. One of the first spots I came across was Dwell, a really interesting boutique offering a curated selection of home décor and gifts. I got myself a pair of vintage metal cowboy bookends that I love. I also stopped by the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts a couple doors down. It showcases works by local artists, and there were some ridiculously good paintings and sculptures. I got a print of a watercolor painting of a gray cat looking out of a front screen door. It reminded me of my own gray cat, Ringo, who likes to see what’s going on outside and what all the birds and squirrels are up to.
Vinyl and Beer at Volume
This store slash bar is AWESOME. I wish Charlotte had something like this. You can find old or new vinyl, listen to the hits, talk to the bartender (he knew so much about music), and sip on some delicious brews. While there, I met a couple from Hillsborough who recommended I visit a house nearby called Ayr Mount. So I added it to my Sunday itinerary.
Sunday: Historic Homes and Scenic Walks
A Morning Stroll On The Riverwalk Greenway
Sunday morning began with another coffee and then a leisurely walk along the Riverwalk Greenway. This is a scenic trail that is right downtown and follows the slow-flowing Eno River.
A beer at Eno River Brewing
This local brewery is known for its craft beers. It has a great outdoor area perfect for enjoying the warmer days. I got one small

pour of one of their lighter beers and it was refreshing. I would highly recommend stopping here for a beverage.
Tour of Ayr Mount
Next, as promised, I visited Ayr Mount. This Federal-era house was built in 1815. The meticulously preserved architecture offered a glimpse into early 19th-century life. I walked the grounds, took some fun timelapses, sat in the backyard to take in the view, and even explored the Eno some more. What a great property. Props to the couple that told me to check it out, because it was worth a visit.
Reflections on Hillsborough
Hillsborough may be small but it's brimming with charm, history, and a vibrant community spirit. From its historic inn, diverse food and drink scene, and scenic trails to the rich cultural heritage, this town offers a delightful escape. My weekend in Hillsborough was both relaxing and enriching, and I will definitely be back. When I do, you’ll probably be able to find me sipping a beer and listening to some records at Volume. What a spot!

Ski Carolina
Five destinations worth a visit this season.
Iwords ELEANOR MERRELL
In the winter, when you hit the slopes in WNC you’ll quickly discover that each resort, lodge, mountain, and area has its own personality — from the high end to the down home — not to mention its own array of activities — from skiing and snowboarding to snow tubing, ice skating, and snowshoeing. Here are five of the best destinations to help shake the winter blues this year.
Cataloochee Ski Area
Founded in order to offer winter employment to local ranch hands, Cataloochee Ski Area became the first ski area in North Carolina when it opened in 1961. Cataloochee offers 18 trails (44% beginner, 39% intermediate, and 17% expert) across 50 acres, with a peak elevation of 5,400 feet and a vertical drop of 740 feet. Additionally, the ski area features two terrain parks — one for beginners and one for intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders. Down the road, Cataloochee also operates a snow tubing facility that’s great for families of all ages. cataloochee.com
Hatley Pointe Mountain Resort
This upscale boutique resort offers a personalized and uncrowded mountain experience. Nestled next to Big Bald Mountain, Hatley Pointe’s 54 acres of skiable terrain include 15 lighted runs and a peak elevation of 4,700 square feet. Hatley also offers an array of dining options, including upscale American cuisine at Smoke & Timber, wood-fired pizza from Peaks & Pies, caffeine jolts at Steeps Coffee, and alcoholic libations at two slopeside bars.
hatleypointe.com
Sugar Mountain Resort
Just two hours from Charlotte, Sugar Mountain is the only ski area in North Carolina to offer double black diamond runs. Whoopdedoo and Boulder Dash welcome skiers and snowboarders alongside Sugar Mountain’s 18 other trails, 14 of which are lit for night skiing/snowboarding. Sugar Mountain Resort offers a range of other winter activities, including one hour and 45 minute long tubing sessions, one and a half hour ice skating sessions, and one hour guided snowshoeing sessions.
skisugar.com
Beech Mountain Resort
With a peak elevation of 5,506 feet, Beech Mountain is the highest ski resort in the east, and with 17 trails sprinkled across 95 skiable acres, it’s also one of the largest ski areas in North Carolina. In addition to winding and plummeting trails, the resort also offers two terrain parks, as well as snow tubing areas for anyone seeking a different flavor of thrill. Beech Mountain stands apart as a destination for much more than snow-based activities. A range of food and beverage options cater to mountain daredevils and spectators alike, including a brewhouse, taproom and grill, coffee corners, and a familyfriendly snack spot. Film screenings and live music series entertain the community year-round.
beechmountainresort.com
Appalachian Ski Mountain
Appalachian Ski Mountain, which opened soon after Cataloochee, is the second oldest ski area in North Carolina. These days, the mountain offers 13 trails (three easy, six more difficult, and four most difficult), all of which are lighted for night skiing, and a whopping four terrain parks. The peak elevation of 4,000 feet supports a vertical drop of 365 feet. Non-skiiers/ snowboarders can find entertainment on Appalachian Ski Mountain’s 6,000 square foot ice rink, which hosts three twohours sessions daily. With quick access to Boone and Appalachian State University plus nearly a half-century of operation under its belt, Appalachian Ski Mountain has become something of an institution among dedicated winter sports hobbyists and first-timers alike.

This outdoor space has it all: a spacious pool, waterfalls, water slides and a full grotto. The rock features, boulders brought from Tennessee, allow for jumping and all kinds of fun. The artificial turf areas give the owners plenty of opportunity for lawn games like bocce or cornhole.
A state-of-the art audio system has zoning capability, too. The outdoor bar is connected to the indoor bar along with quad sliders that create a smooth transition for the home.

This beautiful cottage-style kitchen was designed to bring a modern aesthetic alongside the charm one would expect to find in an old home.
