No. 105

The food issue has always been one of my favorites. I have worked in restaurants, many of my friends and people I respect are chefs or cooks, and I just think the entire culture around the industry is very unique and familial!

So, it's always a fun issue to work on. This issue in particular, we kept somewhat simple. Our main feature is our staff's top 100 restaurants that we love in the Queen City. Along with that you can meet the family behind Osteria LuCa, taste the Colombian flavors at Muraya, raise the American spirit at BHAWK, a veteran-owned distillery in Southern Pines, NC, sample delicious pizza at Pizza Baby, grab a tasty French pastry at Renaissance Patisserie, and sip on some fun cocktails at STK and Little Mama's.

Aside from all the delectable content, we also have some fun arts and culture including the art of Araik Minasyan, a wellness feature on Gritbox, and some beautiful home and design articles.

See spaces from Watershed Builders, JLayton, Lisa Sherry, and more.

Finally in our travel section, head to South Carolina for some amazing experiences. We stay at The Pinch, a hotel in Charleson I'm sure you'll love. We also visit Santee Cooper Country and paddle at the iconic and picturesque Cypress Gardens.

We hope you like this issue and we will see you soon with our colorful fall issue! Until then, enjoy the remaining beautiful days of summer in the Carolinas.

Sincerely,

INSPIRED TO CREATE, CREATING TO INSPIRE

The art of Araik Minasyan.

AAraik Minasyan, like many artists, first felt the pull of creative expression when he was a child. He took art classes to explore drawing, sculpture, and painting techniques. He then continued his creative education at art school, where he honed his skills and perfected techniques for a number of media.

These days, Minasyan experiments with acrylic painting, sculpture, and watercolor. However, his primary focus is oil painting on canvas with a palette knife. A palette knife, unlike a paintbrush, adds texture by introducing crests and valleys that add literal and metaphorical layers to the story each piece tells. When working with a palette knife, best practice is to work wet paint into wet paint, which means that an artist has little opportunity to break from their piece; once the artist starts painting, they must commit to continued work before each layer of paint dries. The process enacts urgency, and that urgency begets authenticity, a rawness of the artist’s expression that comes from stripping away premeditation.

Minasyan’s work typically falls into one of three categories: abstract, abstract expressionism, or impressionism. His abstract work can be said to evoke a rift or a tear, a jutting of one force—joyful and vibrant or sometimes dark and ominous—into another. His impressionist works frequently depict bouquets or softly lit streetscapes. Although, when a human subject appears on the canvas, the same darkness that can ooze from the crevasses of Minasyan’s abstract pieces often appears with a hauntingly beautiful effect.

When Minasyan creates, he finds inspiration in the beauty that surrounds him, including other works of impression-

ism. His emotions and his imagination also spark his creativity, nudging him to put paint to paper. The satisfaction and joy Minasyan experiences as a result of making then prompts him to make more, closing a loop of inspiration-creation-satisfaction that motivates him to continue pursuing art as his career, even in the face of adversity.

Minasyan also finds motivation and strength in his relationships with family members. “Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have the support of many people, but my family has been my biggest source of encouragement,” says Minasyan. “They have always believed in me and supported my artistic pursuits, even when times were tough.”

Their support and his persistence launched Minasyan’s career to far corners of the globe. His work has appeared in exhibitions and galleries in Europe, Asia, and across North America. Currently, Minasyan is based out of Ilar Art Studio in South End, where he strives to create every single day, both for himself and for others.

“Painting makes me feel deeply connected to the world and helps me process and express my emotions in a meaningful way,” says Minasyan. “I hope that my work can inspire in others a sense of wonder, curiosity, and appreciation for the beauty of the world.”

NPASSAGES

Mint Museum Uptown Presents Whitfield Lovell: Passages.

Now through September 22, 2024, Whitfield Lovell: Passages is on display at Mint Museum Uptown. The exhibition will fill galleries on Level 3 and Level 4 (nearly 11,000 square feet).

According to the museum’s curators, a narrative unfolds in Whitfield Lovell: Passages through installations that reach out to your senses—the smell of soil and cigars, the sound of river waters lapping along the shore, video projections, and intricate, often life-size portrait drawings. Lovell tells the stories of

anonymous African Americans who sought to build communities and live comfortable lives despite perilous circumstances. The exhibition explores social progress, physical migration, self-sufficiency, and hidden histories that are part of the African American experience.

GETTING TO KNOW THE CAC

Cabarrus County’s small but mighty nonprofit.

IIn 1980, the North Carolina Arts Council committed to facilitating the establishment of a local arts council in every Carolina county. This led, in 1982, to the creation of the Cabarrus Arts Council, which is now a brimming source of inspiration, community, and joy, as well as facilitator of one of the largest art-in-education programs in the state.

The Cabarrus Arts Council operates out of the 1876 Historic Courthouse in the town of Concord, a little over 30 minutes from Uptown Charlotte. “Having a physical place where the community can learn, create, and find joy is a must-have for making connections and building long-lasting relationships with our audience,” explains Eliana Arenas, Director of Visual Arts at the Cabarrus Arts Council.

The courthouse not only operates as a home base for the council, but also houses the CAC’s primary exhibition and performance spaces. Two elegant staircases lead visitors to Davis Theatre on the second floor of the courthouse, a 227-

seat performance venue that hosts professional theater, live music, film festivals, and more. Thanks in part to an impressive renovation made possible by a generous donation from community leaders Roy and Sue Davis, Davis Theatre and the Cabarrus Arts Council are able to attract not only local talent, but also regional and national performers.

On the first floor, CAC offices share space with The Galleries, four distinct spaces that host both solo and group exhibitions. “We believe it is important to showcase art that is relevant, interesting, and accessible to all people and is not limited to a specific art medium,” says Arenas. The Grant and Dusch Gallery is the largest of the spaces, neatly occupying a little under 400 square feet, but all four galleries play a vital role in CAC exhibition schedules.

Visitors can explore the gallery spaces free of charge Tuesday through Friday from 10 - 5pm and Saturdays from 11 - 4pm. Additionally, the CAC organizes a wide array of

words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos CABARRUS ARTS COUNCIL

programming intended to inspire and involve citizens of all ages. For example, Family Days are specifically tailored to children (preschool and elementary school ages) and their parents. These events feature Creation Stations set up throughout The Galleries, I Spy artwork scavenger hunts, and often a short performance or movie in the Davis Theatre or activities on the front lawn of the courthouse. For older youth, the CAC hosts Art Lab, a 1.5-hour class for kids ages 6-16 that’s composed of a guided tour through the current exhibition in The Galleries and a classroom experience that unpacks the methods and processes that produced the work

“MHO’s team is caring and supportive, making usfeel athome!”

Furthermore, the CAC is an integral part of the town of Concord, coordinating art walks in the heart of town that coincide with exhibition openings. These art walks invite participation from local shops, galleries, makers, and more, often with a full street takeover. They are, in short, an embodiment of everything that, according to Arenas, the CAC strives to do: “We are here to bring new ideas, create a dialogue, make long-lasting relationships through art for all ages, and serve as inspiration for what art can be and do in everyone's lives.”

REALIZE YOUR POTENTIAL

Meet the team behind Charlotte’s beloved kickboxing and fitness studio: Gritbox.

SSince January 2024, a unique and fresh new addition to the Charlotte fitness community has kicked things off at its LoSo Rail Trail location. Gritbox, an approachable and thoughtful spin on the traditional kickboxing fitness studio, found its start in Charleston, South Carolina. Director of Operations Kelly Kennedy and Vice President of Marketing and Operations Colleen Hamilton share that in their search to expand within the Carolinas, Charlotte was an easy choice.

Situated in the city’s lively South End neighborhood on the Rail Trail, Gritbox is just a short walk away from some of the city’s favorite cafes, restaurants, breweries, and more. Gritbox has already proven itself a guided workout opportunity like no other offered in Charlotte. The vision behind the business was to not only make fitness feel more approachable for those of all levels and experience, but also an enthusiastic space participants could feel excited to take part in.

Particularly, Kennedy and Hamilton share that Gritbox’s mission is to ensure that anyone who attends, novice or advanced, can leave each class feeling more confident. Moreover, they hope that not only will their community feel motivated toward their fitness goals, but empowered as a whole individual “to get what they want out of life.” Their programming is structured in a way that can meet everyone where they already are, and participants are encouraged to select the individual weight they feel comfortable lifting and go through each exercise at their preferred pace.

The studio offers 40 classes every week between 6:15 am and 6:30 pm. Their workouts consistently run a tight ship of 45 minute workouts “so you can grind it out and then get on with your day.” Those attending their first session are encouraged to arrive early so coaches can welcome you with a walk through of different stations, boxing strikes, and to answer any questions. For those hoping to give Gritbox a go, the sign up process is a

10 day trial of classes for only $30. For those interested in a more personalized approach, Gritbox hosts personal training sessions for strength training or boxing technique.

Beyond physical empowerment alone, this fitness community seeks to unlock a holistic approach to encouraging your inner grit, emphasizing the benefits of tending regularly to both your mental and physical health. For this reason, Gritbox frequently hosts events to connect over discussions surrounding mindfulness. For example, in July 2024, Gritbox hosted a panel on deconstruction of mental health stigma and its correlation to the positive neurological impacts of practicing physical fitness. In a similar vein, sharing meaningful connection with their community is truly at the heart of this studio, always aiming to build fellowship around the spirit of grit.

Regardless of your experience level, coaches guarantee to deliver both a comfortable and challenging sweat that will push you further than you might have previously expected yourself capable. As Kennedy and Hamilton put it, they just want to inspire you to find your grit!

MURAYA'S MAGIC

Colombian flavors find South End success.

Carolina Maury knew her husband would fall in love. When she brought him to Colombia and shared the rich culture and breathtaking landscapes of her home country, Maury was confident that Emmanuel Perez would be no match for her land’s allure. Sure enough, he became enamored with everything about the country. Cartagena, a port city perched on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, particularly captured his heart, with its walled old town, colorful colonial buildings, and roots dating back to the 16th century.

Maury and Perez returned from their time abroad together, heady from the pull of another place. They decided to bring the cultural and culinary vibrancy of that place, the warm hospitality of its people and the delicious flavors of its cuisine, to a corner of Charlotte by opening one of South End’s most distinct restaurants: Muraya.

Located behind Amos’ Southend, just down the Rail Trail from Flower Child, Muraya operates out of a cozy brick building. Dangling chandeliers and plush couches and chairs elevate the interior, evoking somewhere palatial and swanky. Yet Muraya remains approachable. Colorful serveware, pergola-style ceilings, plus a resident DJ and live musicians on select days of the week keep the ambiance festive, fun, friendly. Here, good vibes and good times come second only to good food.

Colombian flavors form the backbone of Executive Chef Juan Read’s menu. Yet many of these flavors are achieved or complimented by using locally sourced ingredients. The result is a menu that is an inspiring intertwining of global and local, Cartagena and the Queen City.

CThe dinner menu has four primary sections: tapas, salads, entrees, and sushi. The tapas section includes an array of croquetas, plus arepas, ceviche, and more. Entrees include fish-forward dishes like pan seared halibut served with purple potatoes, beurre blanc, papitas, and grilled carrots; as well as salmon risotto dressed with cilantro, black pepper butter, and citrus aioli. Red meat entrees are menu standouts, like the picancha sirloin steak served alongside cayeye (mashed green guineos) and grilled heirloom carrots and the paisa bowl with chicharrón, achiote red bean purée, sweet plantain risotto, tangerine aioli, fresh avocado, and quail egg.

Guests can pair their brunch or dinner fare with any number of cocktails on Muraya’s delectable and diverse beverage menu. From classics to unique signatures, the tastes and products of Colombia are foregrounded here as well. Take for example the Lulada Mule, a spin on the traditional Colombian Lulada drink which is made from lulo, a fruit grown in northwestern South America. An assortment of wines and beers are also available, as well as nonalcoholic beverages.

Muraya’s core menu will remain constant. However, seasonal rotations and monthly innovations will help the menu stay fresh and innovative, which in turn may help Muraya stay successful in a neighborhood already brimming with restaurants.

Regardless of Muraya’s long term prospects, the restaurant’s immediate success is apparent in the way that it has so fully brought the magic of Cartagena and Colombia to the city of Charlotte. Visit Monday through Thursday 5 - 10pm, Friday through Saturday 11am - 12pm, or Sunday 11am - 10pm.

OCHEF'S KITCHEN

Osteria LuCa is here to stay.
words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE

Osteria LuCa is a restaurant born of dedication, vision, and experience. Park Road’s modern-meets-classic Italian restaurant opened its doors in January 2020. Two months later, they were shuttering their doors and trying to figure out what was next. Unlike many other restaurants, though, Osteria LuCa elected not to offer takeout services. “Being a new restaurant, we didn’t want people’s first experience to be out of a box,” explains Ken Martino, who owns Osteria LuCa with his wife Tricia Martino.

Instead, the Osteria LuCa team apprehensively waited until May when they at last re-opened their doors, but only after reconfiguring their dining room and staffing protocol to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Even with the shuffling, the Martinos were able to keep most of the staff.

“Our staff has been our key to success. We have caring and considerate people who feel passionately about serving our guests. Our motto is ‘Work hard and be kind.’ We feel, if we can do those two things, then everything will be alright,” says Ken.

One staff member who has been particularly critical to this mission is Shane Miller, who was hired as the opening Executive Chef in 2019 and guided Osteria LuCa to acclaim in the

years since. Miller began working in restaurants at age 16. As he tells it, he loved food almost as much as he loved simply being in the hustle and bustle of a restaurant, the carefully choreographed dance of the dining room and kitchen, the finer points of a successful business, the satisfaction of a busy night. So, Miller attended Johnson & Wales, graduating in 2014 with a degree in Food & Hospitality Management.

He trained with Sam Diminich, who was the Executive Chef at Upstream Restaurant in Charlotte before becoming wellknown by winning the Food Network hit “Beat Bobby Flay” and starting his own culinary concepts: Restaurant Constance and Your Farms Your Table Restaurant Group. Determined to understand every nook and cranny of the restaurant business, Chef Shane transitioned out of the kitchen to the front of house, accepting a management position at CO, a Southeast Asian restaurant with two Charlotte locations.

In 2019, Miller found his way back to the kitchen at Osteria LuCa. Alongside Chef Chris McDade, he designed their first four seasonal menu iterations. Now, Miller is the primary pioneer of updates to the menu, whether that’s seasonal

rotations or innovative new dishes. “Each and every menu starts with elements, components, ingredients found in different regions in Italy,” says Miller. “From there, the team comes up with ways to make these components uniquely our own.”

Miller works closely alongside the Martinos to ensure he’s embodying their shared food philosophy at every step of the way: “The essence of Italian food is simplicity.” Quality ingredients working in streamlined harmony are at the crux of Osteria Luca’s offering, from their food to their people.

“Tricia and I created Osteria LuCa to be a comfortable neighborhood spot where locals would gather with friends and family to enjoy simple delicious food and beverages,” recalls Ken. “Four and a half years in, it’s nice to see a steady stream of regulars and newcomers, many of whom know each other and stop at each table or the bar to catch up.”

Despite opening during a time of intense isolation, Osteria has realized its potential as a place of assembly, where good people on both sides of the kitchen delight in the simple pleasure of good food and good company.

RAISE THE AMERICAN SPIRIT

At BHAWK Distillery in Southern Pines, NC, two veterans — Brad and Jess Halling — are on a mission to celebrate acts of service while serving great whiskey.

Wwords SAMANTHA HUSTED / photos JP GRICE

With over 49 years of combined military service, Brad and Jessica “Jess” Halling are a powerful team. Last year, the husband and wife duo launched the Brad Halling American Whiskey Ko. Distillery, or BHAWK for short, in Southern Pines, NC. The name pays homage to the Battle of Mogadishu, widely recognized as Black Hawk Down. That conflict left Brad severely wounded when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his helicopter, resulting in the amputation of his leg above the left knee. More on that later.

Today, the distillery serves as an immersive experience for whiskey lovers, a gathering place for tourists and locals, and above all, a beacon for the surrounding military community. But, according to Jess, you don’t need to be an active military member or a veteran to enjoy the space.

“It's a place where someone would want to spend the day, take a tour, eat a meal, and have a couple of cocktails, and feel great regardless of whether you have any military affiliation or not,” Jess says.

While their respective military careers span decades—Brad a Sergeant Major in the Special Forces, and Jess a Colonel and army lawyer—their story as a couple began in 2008 when they met on the dating website Match.com. From the start, their connection was clear. They bonded over their shared military backgrounds, their love of wine, and their affinity for whiskey.

Over the years, the idea for BHAWK grew from their desire to open a small business together. As Jess neared retirement in 2019, and after many inspiring trips to Napa Valley, they decided to take the leap. For them it wasn’t wine, but instead, a whiskey venture that just made sense.

“There’s this long-standing connection between whiskey and the military, from George Washington issuing troops whiskey before battle, up until the modern day where people all over the world, at memorials, raise a glass of whiskey to toast, to celebrate, to honor, to cherish, and to mourn someone,” says Jess.

For the Hallings, BHAWK has taken on a profound purpose. The brand is the embodiment of Brad’s personal journey and

his continual walk with gratitude—a major theme at the distillery. The name BHAWK itself is a tribute to the men he served with in the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. Following the battle, Brad made history by becoming the first above the knee amputee to remain on active duty through full Army retirement. He then went on to complete a graduate program to become a certified prosthetist.

“During the Battle of Mogadishu, we lost 18 Americans. For whatever reason I survived,” Brad says. I struggled briefly with survivor's guilt but made a choice to move forward and live a life that many of my friends would not be allowed to. Since then, I have never seen a cup half empty.”

Together, the Hallings want to share other remarkable stories of gratitude, like Brad’s, and celebrate extraordinary service through their Sergeant Valor Tribute Series of premium bourbon. The story behind each new batch of bourbon will be on display in their Gratitude Room, a living museum in the heart of BHAWK. The first batch, “To the Crew of Super 62,” honors the special operations aviation crew who delivered Brad from the battlefield on October 3, 1993.

“Brad got to learn again as an amputee, how to walk and swim and bike and jump out of airplanes and do all these things again as though he were a child learning how to do things for the first time,” says Jess. “I found that to be incredibly special and I knew then, and it was confirmed over time, that my life's mission would be to find a way to amplify lifetime stories of gratitude and resilience like his.”

Currently the distillery offers a Sergeant Valor select rye and bourbon, as well as a higher proof premium bourbon that's part of their Sergeant Valor Gratitude Tribute Series. Or, enjoy the Madam Colonel series with a Pistachio Bourbon Cream, and they are in the process of developing their Madam Colonel gin and vodka. If you want to try any of their spirits but are not in the Southern Pines area, you can request them at your local ABC store via their product codes, which are available on their website.

PIZZA BABY'S

QUEEN MARGHERITA

Pizza Baby was first opened in Charlotte's Wesley Heights by Chef Trey Wilson and Steven De Falco. Now, they have a location in Elizabeth as well (known as “Pizza Baby East” while the former has been dubbed Pizza Baby West). The Americana-style pizza restaurant blends Italian traditions with the shareability of beloved New York pies. The Queen

Margherita is a classic order: Available in 8 or 12 inches, this is Pizza Baby’s spin on a typical Neapolitan. Garnished with hand-crushed peeled tomatoes, mozzarella, fresh basil leaves, and drizzled with real extra virgin olive oil, it’s excellent on its own or when paired with Pizza Baby’s arugula salad… and maybe a large pour, too.

RENAISSANCE PÂTISSERIE’S

TARTE AU CITRON

Indulge the French way at Charlotte’s Renaissance Pâtisserie. The authentic French bakery in SouthPark’s Specialty Shops serves a full cafe menu in addition to its signature baked goods—all of which are as delicious as they are beautifully finely crafted. One of their specialties that we find

ourselves going back to time and again is the tarte au citron (lemon tartelette). This is an iconic French dessert that’s neither too sweet nor too tart. Renaissance Pâtisserie’s take features a crumbly, buttery sweet dough crust as a base with luscious lemon curd and a topping of vanilla meringue brûlée rim.

When you go to Little Mama’s, one of the best places in Charlotte for a classic Italian dining experience, there’s lots of can’tgo-wrong food choices. The cocktail menu stands out as well, with plenty of traditional Italian flavors. The Amari Sour is a balance of sourness from citrus, bitterness from the Amaro, and sweetness from the Amaretto.

The drink is made from Pasubio Vino Amaro, Disaronno Amaretto, a splash of lemon and lime juice and finished off with an egg white foam.

STK'S

CUCUMBER STILETTO

words SUNNY HUBLER

STK in Uptown Charlotte easily blends together the feel of a modern, non-stuffy steakhouse with the buzz of a chic lounge. It’s a place you’d be equally likely to grab an after-work weeknight drink or go to celebrate one of life’s most memorable occasions. With locations in many major cities, including London, NYC, and Atlanta, STK is bringing its signature fine dining, patio brunches, and lively nightlife to Charlotte. If you’re looking for a lighter drink to start your meal or happy hour, go for the “Cucumber Stiletto.” Made with Grey Goose Le Citron vodka and St. Germain (a French liqueur made from hand-picked elderflower blossoms), the drink is then finished with muddled cucumber and fresh mint. It’s a perfect warm weather sipper that pairs nicely with the starter menu or any seafood dish.

DREAM HOMES BROUGHT TO LIFE

Emily Hodge Design turns clients’ visions into reality.

words SUNNY HUBLER
photos courtesy EMILY HODGE
photos by ALLISON KUN, JUILIA D'AGOSTINO, KELSEY ANN ROSE, MICHAEL BLEVINS

EEmily Hodge is the owner and principal designer at her self-named Charlotte-based firm. Her work juxtaposes modern lines with raw materials, textures and classical architectural details.

Emily’s work started some 15 years ago. She has now been in Charlotte for five years, “working a bit under the radar” as she puts it in her studio in the Dilworth Artisan Station.

Emily has tackled all sorts of projects, from renovating and furnishing full apartment buildings in Chicago to student housing renovations in Georgia to large-scale new builds in Charlotte.

Here, she tells us more about her firm, her style, and where she gets new inspiration.

How did you decide to go into this kind of work?

I happened to hear about a local interior design school that offered a night program. Without much hesitation, I quit advertising, got a 9-5 admin job and enrolled in design school. The whole transition ultimately led me to incredible career and life experiences that have shaped me into the designer and person I am today.

What is your design "signature"?

Space planning is my signature, and my favorite part of the process. The beauty and customized aesthetic always comes about, but the foundation of a home must be in space planning–whether that’s designing a kitchen or laying out a furniture plan. We spend a good chunk of time learning about our clients’ daily habits and movements throughout each space so we can tailor every detail. We go into depths with customized lighting and power plans so that every inch of a residence has been considered.

From where do you draw most of your inspirations for your designs?

All of my inspiration comes from my clients and their personal style or aspirational look, along with my stacks of historical Architectural Digest and Elle Décor magazines.

by

Mint Museum Uptown at Levine Center for the Arts | 500 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 704.337.2000 | mintmuseum.org | @themintmuseum

How would you describe your general design philosophy?

I believe my role as a designer is to help people bring to life their dream homes, which means we work hard to determine a client’s particular style and are extremely collaborative through the creative process. I will always impart my obsession with classic architectural details, but ultimately I want my clients to feel like their home truly feels like their own unique space.

When working in the idea phase with a new client, how do you go about getting a feel for their tastes and their aesthetic? Is there particular research that you do?

We dedicate the first part of our relationship to determining the aesthetic direction of the home. I have developed a collaborative process that extracts their loves and dislikes, which are mutually important. The results of this process become our roadmap for the design. Each project is vastly different in look, which is so fun for me!

Is there a particular feature or object that is consistent across your designs?

I absolutely love the weight and texture of an oversized faux fur throw or chunky merino wool blanket, so I’ll always put one into a basket or at the foot of a bed.

What makes a project a success in your opinion?

I love when an entire project team collaborates and communicates well: architect, builder, interior designer, homeowner. Each partner brings such a vast amount of passion, expertise, and experience. Together, we’re here to lay it all on the table to create the absolute best product possible.

INSPIRED BY NATURE

This warm, beautiful kitchen is part of a larger lakefront new build in Mooresville. Upon purchasing the home, the clients selected Kelly Cruz Interiors to make all the architectural and construction finishes, and to then furnish their new living space. A key part of that was to design the kitchen. With the waterview and plenty of mature trees, it was important to Kelly to choose a cabinet finish and other items that balanced and enhanced the view from the kitchen’s large windows.

“Ease of use was very important because the clients intend

to age in place in this home,” Kelly adds. “The cabinet hardware is functional, easy to use, but also is not distracting. And, of course, extra space between the island and the surrounding cabinets helps with two cooks. The countertops are a piece of art made by nature. After all these years of designing homes, nature still amazes and inspires me!”

The cabinets are from Eudy’s, the tile backsplash is Walker Zanger and the art is part of the client’s collection. Appliances are Sub-Zero & Wolf. — info — kellycruzinteriors.com / @kellycruzinteriors

At Woodshop QC, we specialize in creating custom, handmade wood cabinets which are truly one-of-a-kind.

Our artisan craftsmen use only the finest materials and hardwoods to be certain your new cabinets are not only beautiful, but are also built to last.

TRULY CUSTOM

Layton Campbell of J Layton Interiors designs spaces for clients who desire unique homes that are personal to their diverse tastes and needs and meant to keep up with the times. This beautiful kitchen is a classic but not fussy design, and one that would appeal to both a traditional or more modern aesthetic.

“The client wanted a light and airy kitchen, but I added the white oak elements for warmth,” Layton notes. “[And] the hood

plaster design blends so seamlessly with the marble splash with a hint of lift in its reflection.”

The drama of the space comes from the intentionally designed oversized pendants. The marble tops and full splash are from Art of Stone, the Venetian plastered hood is custom, pendants are Hubbardton Forge, and the cabinet hardware was sourced through Bird Decorative Hardware and Bath.

ISLAND LIVING

Designer Lisa Sherry of Lisa Sherry Interieurs had a home on Bald Head Island for many years and, at one point, considered purchasing this very home for herself. It was not meant to be, yet, in a serendipitous twist, Lisa got the chance to reimagine the space for the new homeowners when they became her clients.

Bald Head Island is a small island off the coast of NC, accessible only by ferry. The island is car-free (golf carts and bikes only) and carefree. This home was one of the very first built on the island. Before the significant reno -

vation, the vibe was 1970s beach house with lots of quirky character. The guiding design principle for Lisa was to open up and modernize the space, with nods to the home’s original charm.

“My clients love to entertain–to fill the house with love and laughter, welcoming friends, family and also embracing the sweeping marsh views” Lisa explains. “This kitchen–one of two–is the heartbeat of the home. In fact, guests enter directly into this space, so the kitchen also serves as a foyer. It sets the tone for the experience of the home.” — info — lisasherryinterieurs.com / @lisasherryinterieurs

A BUNGALOW IN DILWORTH

NWatershed Builders and Tyler Interiors team up for transformation.

words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos LAURA SUMRAK

Nestled in a close-knit neighborhood in the historic Dilworth area of Charlotte, a charming 3,122 square foot bungalow has been home to a family of four for over 25 years. With three beds and two and a half baths, it’s the perfect size for their needs. Although perfectly located and perfectly sized, the home had become outdated. When the family realized that their nest was overdue for a facelift, they contracted Watershed Builders and Tyler Interiors to plan and execute a tasteful interior remodel.

“Every room needed modernizing,” recalls Dominick Thompson, President of Watershed Builders. So, he and Natalie Tyler of Tyler Interiors set to work transforming this faithful cottage into the bungalow of their clients’ dreams. The client put

their full faith in these two teams, respecting their professional skill sets and trusting that they would make the choices that would best serve the clients’ needs and aesthetic preferences. The result was a fun and fluid collaboration that produced a classical transitional style home equipped to handle anything 2024 might bring.

“The project goal was to generate an elevated, serene aesthetic throughout the home,” says Tyler. “We achieved our goal by pairing cozy, white shades with blues and greens, integrating textural accents rich in contrast, and curating a beautiful blend of old and new furnishings.”

Family and friends might enter through the mudroom, which opens directly into the room that is the heart of most homes:

the kitchen. Gleaming countertops by Harkey Tile & Stone, refreshed cabinetry from Sean Carlin Designs, and new appliances bring a fresh shine to the kitchen. Simple touches like the rich, welcoming blue of the cabinets, floating shelves, and vertical shiplap breathe life into the room.

Behind a peninsula that offers ample space for cooking and entertaining, a wine nook flooded with natural light leads to the dining room. Here, crown molding and a high impact glass chandelier elevate the space in a manner befit for a formal dining room. However, a textured wallcovering and whispers of wicker soften the space, rendering it elevated without becoming imposing, formal yet still inviting.

Another gathering space in the house is the living room, where the home’s primary accent color, blue, makes an appearance in throw pillows and wall art. This space transitions seamlessly into a game/informal dining room with enviable built-in bookcases. “The client is an avid book collector who needed room for putting

the books on display,” says Thompson. “I suggested a ladder rail since the ceilings were rather tall,” and the result is any reader’s dream library wall. A nearby book nook, bathed in sunlight during the day and perfectly cozy after dark falls, provides the perfect perch to enjoy a novel plucked from the floor-to-ceiling collection.

In no room is it quite so evident that a home is in need of an update than in the bathroom, and these bathrooms were certainly given all the TLC they deserved, and then some. New plumbing fixtures from Ferguson immediately brought these homes into the year 2024. Plus, gorgeous vanities in the primary bathroom and dreamy shower and floor tiles in the secondary bathroom added character and charm, transforming each of these rooms, like the rest of the house, into a dreamy oasis.

KING STREET CHIC

Enjoy Charleston’s coolest new luxury stay.

words SUNNY HUBLER / photos courtesy THE PINCH

The bustling King Street has a little bit of everything: Charleston’s finest shopping, art galleries, dining from casual to upscale, and — of course — some of the most coveted places to stay while you’re in the city.

OOne of the latest (and most lauded) additions is The Pinch, a streamlined, contemporary-chic hotel that opened doors in 2022. The hotel is a design collaboration from CEO Morris Adjmi Architects and architect Aaron Poritz, with the input of several different international artists.

The experience starts with a private off-street entrance where George and King Street meet. Inside, there’s a full service restaurant on-site as well as an oyster bar frequented by locals, a single room spa, and 25 different room options. The Pinch is housed across three structures: two original Victorian-style buildings, both restored gems from the 1800s, and one new construction addition.

Choose from lofts, suites, or even one of the three longer-term residences equipped to house you for 30-plus days. The larger suites include a spacious living room and a generously sized kitchen, fully stocked should you wish to cook. Regardless of size or layout, each room at The Pinch displays a careful eye for design detail. Think statement lighting, hand-painted wallpaper, and one-of-a-kind antique rugs.

As beautiful as the rooms are, the amenities equally knock it out of the park. The spa is intentionally tranquil, and offers guests customized massage treatments and facials featuring luxury Comfort Zone products from Italy.

The oyster bar, The Quinte, is led by Executive Chef Jason

Stanhope and has quickly earned a coveted spot in Charleston’s rotation of great restaurants. The menu features a “high-low range of offerings,” from sandwiches to shellfish towers, local beers to rare Champagnes. Or, swing by Lowland, The Pinch’s full-service Southern tavern, spans two floors of the historic Lequeux-Williams home on George Street. Grab a drink at the downstairs Tavern Room, or dine in the former carriage house, The Parlour Room, with its sweeping 12-foot ceilings. Upstairs, The Dining Room offers up “playful takes on nostalgic dishes.” Expect a robust cocktail menu and an extensive wine selection. When you are ready to venture beyond The Pinch’s walls, grab a bike or set out on foot. The convenient location along with Charleston’s rich history offers visitors the opportunity to experience first-hand historic sites and landmarks that give the area its respective reputation. King Street will leave you with no shortage of things to do, see, or places to shop, eat, and drink. Or, take a longer stroll (also a good time to use those bikes) down to East Bay to see the iconic Waterfront Park.

Charleston is a city famous for its hospitality and careful eye for aesthetics. The Pinch is exactly the addition the city deserves, and one its visitors (and locals) wait for.

QUINTESSENTIAL SMALL TOWN CHARM

SSantee Cooper Country in South Carolina is one of the state’s most hidden gems.

Santee Cooper Country’s rustic allure stands as the pinnacle of the more intimate side of South Carolina’s southern beauty. Located alongside the largest freshwater lake in the state, the area is vastly agreed upon as a prime example of “a nature lover’s paradise,” with reputable golf courses, hiking trails, and fishing spots which are best described as true hidden gems. In addition to the selection of tasteful hospitality and cuisine tucked a short distance from any outdoor adventure, Santee Cooper Country guarantees endless possibilities.

A Nationally Treasured Spot to Golf

Santee offers their “trinity” of three attractive golf courses, challenging golfers of all levels from around the country. Much of Santee’s popularity for golfing is attributed to its ideal climate situation, characterizing it as a comfortable year-round sporting destination. Among its most beloved golf courses, Beech Creek Golf Club stands out, with various risk reward holes along its sloping elevation. Enjoy a landscape in equal parts aesthetically pleasing and historically relevant; Located on site of the Battle of Beech Creek, the club is hailed as the most scenic piece of property among Sumter County.

The More Adventurous Side of SC

No doubt, some of the state’s most pristine and actively engaging spaces for outdoor enthusiasts are offered to all in Santee. Among the vast list of striking hiking paths offered to visitors, the Palmetto Trail additionally runs through the area. This path, a highlight to any South Carolina visit, is known espe-

cially for its mountain biking opportunities. Whichever way you prefer to get active, lace up your hiking shoes, kick up some dust under your wheels, and explore this stretch of the 500-mile route. Along the way, be sure to keep a look-out for the fresh producer stands displaying seasonal local strawberries, blueberries, or peaches. Other adventures are close as well, including the Cypress Gardens in nearby Moncks Corner and Mepkin Abbey, a peaceful and beautiful property on the shores of the Cooper River. We also highly recommend a visit to Sumter's Swan Lake Iris Gardens, a true hidden gem nature preserve perfect for the wildlife and bird enthusiast.

Lake Marion's Celebrated Fishing Hub

The largest lake in South Carolina, Lake Marion, is a beloved spot by Santee locals and visitors alike. With more than 315 miles of shoreline, many of the country’s most avid fishers frequent the lake regularly for some of the most sought after sporting events and competitions. The lake is considered opportune for catching fish year round, including largemouth bass, striped bass, bream, and crappie, even historically holding records for these species’ populations. With much of its area situated within Santee State Park, enjoy taking advantage of some of the nation’s best freshwater fishing beneath the shaded cypress shallows or the vast open water. Next up, make sure to dedicate substantial time to explore the many unique landscapes which make up the rest of Santee State Park. With over 10 miles of trail, the park’s scenic views vary from lushious mossy hardwood to strolls alongside the breeze off of the lake. To get to know the park more intimately, book your stay in one of the 30 luxury cabins nestled right on the lake’s shore.

Distinctly Southern Dining Sensibilities

After a fulfilling day of fishing, kick back at the relaxing and rustic atmosphere at The Lake House. This place has it all, ambiance, a delicious menu, views of the lake, even a karaoke night plus some of the best desserts in the area. Other options nearby include Mill Creek Food and Spirits. Sitting directly on one of the area's central marinas, you can pull up your boat, hop off, and grab a bite off of their quintessentially Southern menu, including a locally caught catfish dinner or “creek burger." For a more fine-dining twist on this distinctly South Carolinian cuisine, Captain’s Quarters is a perfect alternative. Known for steak and seafood selections, the bistro boasts a variety of choices from the traditional fish and chips to a more refined “succulent lobster.” Other highlights from their menu include the fried green tomatoes, popcorn crawfish bites, and even frog legs. Or if you would like to visit nearby Sumter, SC and walk in the quaint downtown and

then have a bite we recommend Hamptons. The menu is wonderful and the outdoor patio is an amazing place to spend an evening tasting and sipping.

Where To Stay When Visiting

Looking for a bit of historic charm integral to the actual accommodation experience of Santee’s hospitality? In equal parts cozy and scenic, Clark’s Inn & Restaurant is often a favored spot for your casual golf trip with friends or for a quaintly sophisticated wedding reception alike. The inn’s Santee Room especially captures the location’s overall essence perfectly. For those RVers out there one of our favorite destinations is Palmetto Shores RV Resort. This well-appointed resort is lake front and features cabins on the shores of Lake Marion as well as a swimming pool, dock for your boat, and splash pool.

MAGIC IN THE SWAMP

South Carolina’s Cypress Gardens features a unique array of plants, wildlife, history, and more.

SSituated amid several of South Carolina’s small, welcoming towns sits Monck’s Corner, home of one of the state’s most beautiful nature preserves: Cypress Gardens. This 170 acre preserve also hosts historic sites with remnants of architecture and gardens dating back to 1821. Located an hour’s drive from Charleston and three hours from Charlotte, Monck’s Corner is a must-see for all outdoor enthusiasts looking to expand their horizons around the Carolinas.

Eight acres of bald cypress and tupelo swamp, scattered with bright green lily pads, now sit among the same area where the rice fields used to flood for harvesting. The area also offers countless opportunities for hiking and boating. Cypress Gardens may be best recognized from its appearances in scenes of

2004’s staple romance “The Notebook” or Netflix’s hit thriller series “Outer Banks.” The scenic spot is appreciated by many for its aesthetic appeal. In fact, the site regularly hosts weddings.

The garden’s three miles of hiking trails are shrouded by statuesque branches and lined with views of the dark swamp. A boat ride through the waterway is often considered the highlight of an exploration around the landscape. Visitors can paddle through a marked trail, searching for alligators, turtles, river otters, birds and other wildlife. Each season proves a sight to behold, especially the spring’s lush daffodil beds and camellia blossoms, which enliven the landscape with a wash of vivid color.

Even during the colder months, the gardens offer the unique opportunity to step into a lively, colorful environment in their

greenhouse, used primarily as a butterfly sanctuary. Boasting 2,500 square feet, the exotic flora and fauna are home to a fish pond, birds, bees, and upwards of hundreds of butterflies. Take a leisurely stroll reveling in the relaxing ambience after the more rigorous adventures you’ve enjoyed around the gardens.

If you’d like to stay nearby, the neighboring town of Summerville, SC offers quintessential Southern charm. Located along the route between Charleston andthe Cypress Gardens, downtown Summerville has both historic appeal and all the modern amenities. Among various choices between charming lakehouse rentals and gorgeous inns, a standout among the area’s hospitality is the town’s selection of historic bed and breakfasts.

The family-owned B&B Chick Inn on Main promises both luxury and comfort uncompromised. Conveniently seated within downtown, the hosts seek to make you feel as at-home as possible, even allowing guests to bring their pets along for the ride. Hot breakfasts and coffee are made by the host each morning, which frequently feature their famous quiches, made with their coop’s own fresh eggs. Additionally, Flowertown Charm has gone from fixer-upper to tastefully artistic abode, including eight fireplaces with original mantles and unique ceiling detailing in each room. Aside from the farm’s hospitality alone, popular events regularly offered there include goat yoga, candle making, succulent terrarium building, and heifer calf private bottle feeding.

Outside of your visits to Cypress Gardens, Summerville, SC welcomes you to its active community and rich history. Sweet tea, although integral to the cuisine and history of the American South, is an especially prominent staple in this smalltown, the birthplace of the specific American twist on this versatile beverage. On the Summerville Sweet Tea Trail, learn about the history of black tea, how it ended up putting down its first American roots along a French botanist’s journey to settling in Charleston, and what made sweet tea such a Southern staple. Along the trail, visit roughly 20 cafes and tea houses to sample various distinctly southern sweets. Afterward, consider visiting one of Summerville’s many opportunities for antiquing, 18 golf courses, or perusing the farmer’s market.

On an upcoming visit to Monck’s Corner’s Cypress Gardens, immerse yourself in breathtaking wilderness landscapes, a warm welcome at local stays, and even the historic tradition of sweet tea. A stroll through the historic bald cypress and tupelo swamp and surrounding communities is the perfect relaxing getaway.
