And of course, we have all the holiday content centered on three of our favorite topics: events, holiday towns, and tasty treats!

Look forward to seeing the lights at Brookgreen Gardens and Biltmore, visit some of our favorite downtowns like Sylva and Pinehurst, and taste Charlotte’s best desserts, from cheesecake at Villani’s to festive treats at Copain.

Have a wonderful holiday season, and we’ll see you in 2025!

WHERE THERE’S LIFE, THERE’S HOPE
In
words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos ROBB WEBB PHOTOGRAPHY courtesy ESTHER MOOREHEAD
the studio with Esther Moorehead.

WWhen she was four years old, Esther Moorehead and her family moved from Canada to Northern Ireland to live with Moorehead’s great grandparents. Her great grandfather was the head gardener for an Irish estate, and tended to his own (much smaller) garden with equal diligence. Young Moorehead trotted along behind her great grandfather as he weeded and pruned, divided and fertilized. “I can still remember the distinct smell of his greenhouse and feel the damp, dark soil from the flower beds between my fingers,” recalls Moorehead. “That is where my creative soul was born.”

Moorehead spent the remainder of her childhood years dipping her toes into a myriad of creative pursuits. Drawing, painting, stage design, church music — everything piqued her interest. At college in South Carolina, she studied Art Education before returning to Toronto, Canada and accepting a position as an art educator in a high school. In her spare time, Moorehead worked toward building a career as a full time studio artist while life meandered onward. She got married. She gave birth to her first child. She was diagnosed with cancer.

The diagnosis prompted a recalibration. Hope and gratitude loomed large for Moorehead. So, when her family relocated to Charlotte in 2018, she dove into life as a studio artist, developing relationships with local galleries and arts organizations and finding fellow artists and other creatives to connect with, uplift,

and learn from. These days, Moorehead’s work can be found in galleries and public spaces in both the USA and Canada.

Moorehead’s Media

Her paintings (acrylic and oil on canvas) are bold and rich, almost always featuring people who often populate busy urban settings. It’s no surprise, then, to learn that New York City is a source of much of Moorehead’s inspiration. “I love the buzz of a city street full of people in constant motion,” she says. “I wonder what their stories are, where they are going, what dreams they are working toward.” That curiosity is perceptible in Moorehead’s work. The groups of subjects seem less like crowds and more like collectives, quietly bound by shared humanity, but also honored in their individuality.

A newer application of Moorehead’s creativity is the creation of murals. This work comes on the heels of making set designs for small theater projects, which helped acclimate Moorehead to large scale work. “I love scaling up my imagery to create a more immersive experience,” Moorehead has come to realize. Her murals can now be found at the Charlotte Art League, C.N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church near Camp North End, and Luminous Lane (an alley in Uptown transformed by 42 artists during the Charlotte Shout! Festival).

Finding Flow

Moorehead works out of a studio space in Charlotte, creating as often as possible while still protecting time to be present with her family and invest in her community. That intentional protection of presence, combined with a true artistic calling, allows Moorehead to become fully absorbed in her creative process. “When I paint, whatever piece I’m working on becomes my world,” says Moorehead. “It’s strange and beautiful …It’s like nothing else exists in those moments.”

She hopes this is how viewers experience her artwork, as well. To find themselves not so much seeing the art but existing within it. And, perhaps just as importantly, finding solace in the company of each works’ figures. “Sometimes the present can be overwhelming,” confesses Moorehead. “But what keeps me grounded is a phrase passed to me by my dad, ‘where there’s life, there’s hope.’” A sentiment that seems as true when applied to the streets of New York City as to the soil in a small garden in Belfast.

CHANCE ENCOUNTERS

The Bechtler presents Chance Encounters: Surrealism Then and Now.

TThe Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is the only museum in the Southern United States dedicated to European and American Modern Art and its legacies. Running now through March 3, 2025, you can see Chance Encounters: Surrealism Then and Now for yourself.

According to The Bechtler’s curators, surrealism was a revolutionary artistic and literary movement that was founded in Paris in 1924 but soon spread across the globe. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the movement, Chance Encounters: Surrealism

Then and Now pairs examples of historical Surrealism from the museum’s collection with works by contemporary artists whose practices extend the legacies of Surrealist exploration. Paying tribute to the inclusive and international scope of the movement, the exhibition includes works by Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, Meret Oppenheim, Germaine Richier, and Rufino Tamayo alongside that of Julie Curtiss, Marcel Dzama, Heri Dono, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Thomas Lerooy, Wangechi Mutu, Naudline Pierre, and Shoshanna Weinberger.

REVIVAL

In light of the tragedy in Western NC, Asheville’s prominent arts scene needs your support.

TTypically, we use these pages of the magazine to highlight a single arts venue in the greater Charlotte area. But after the devastation that has rocked our neighbors and friends in Western NC, we wanted to instead direct your attention to the many galleries and artists in Asheville who currently need support. The River Arts District, a central hub for artists in Asheville, was particularly devastated. Artists lost entire bodies of work, their income source, and studio spaces they’d had for decades.

Here are but a few that could use your attention, support, and any assistance you can give.

Asheville Art Museum

Asheville Art Museum closed for several weeks following Helene. Donations are crucial to help the staff and teaching artists continue the museum’s mission of bringing art and creativity to the community.

RADA Foundation

Most of the 26 buildings experienced catastrophic destruction, including art, supplies and equipment. RADA’s goal is

to assist artists as best they can with rent and supplies. Join to donate at sponsor levels, or choose the “help artists within our community” link on the website.

Love Asheville From Afar

This integrated website allows users to browse local stores with online retail, purchase gift cards for future use and make direct donations to businesses and nonprofit organizations. The Love Asheville From Afar initiative allows people to support the local economy even when they can't visit in person.

Hannah Cole

Artist Hannah Cole lost everything from over 20 years of work in her studio that was along the Swannanoa River tributary. In addition to being a working artist, she also teaches finance to artists. You can support her by visiting her website or Instagram page.

Michael Sherrill & Mudtools

Mudtools, founded by Michael Sherrill, handmakes tools for artists and lost everything, including their entire office and production facility. Mudtools has started a GoFundMe to help it recover from the hurricane.

MIND AND BODY

Mood House expands into Oakhurst.

TThree years after opening its first location in Dilworth in 2021, Mood House has expanded to a second location nestled in the hospitable Oakhurst neighborhood.

Since opening its flagship massage studio, Mood House has caught the attention of national publications like Allure Magazine, which celebrated Mood House as a “must-visit” concept, and it has become the official massage provider for some of Charlotte’s top professional athletes, including members of the Charlotte Ballet and Carolina Panthers TopCats Cheerleaders. With endorsements like this, it’s no surprise that Mood House had grown to over 800 monthly members, reaching its capacity in Dilworth.

As owner Cristina Wilson considered where to open Mood House’s second location, Oakhurst’s proximity to Plaza Midwood, Elizabeth, Cotswold, and Eastover, areas where many of Mood House’s members live, attracted her to the neighborhood. When she discovered Oakhurst Commons, a newly redeveloped shopping area where neighbors include Switchyards, Ilios Crafted Greek, and The Health Club, Wilson knew she’d found Mood House’s second home.

She collaborated with Foard Construction and Southwick Architecture & Interiors to outfit the new space with eight massage suites, three infrared saunas, and a private outdoor patio. The same Palm Springs energy that attracted so many

words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE

members to the Dilworth location imbues the Oakhurst space. Clean lines, minimalist furnishings, bright whites, and organic textures promote tranquility while also evoking (a much more humid version of) the iconic California spa town.

Showing Up By Chilling Out

In addition to a shared aesthetic, Mood House Oakhurst also has the same core services and membership structure as its Dilworth sister. Charlotteans can sign up for The Ritual membership — $92 per month for a monthly 50-minute massage— or The Retreat membership — $125 per month for a monthly 80-minute massage. Monthly massages can be shared with others, as well as rolled over from month to month to provide greater flexibility to busy schedules.

Members not only enjoy a lower price point for their massages, but also get to reap the benefits of building a relationship with Mood House’s therapists. This allows them to achieve greater therapeutic relief, as therapist and client become in-

creasingly knowledgeable of and in sync with one another.

Mood House also offers a la carte services. Their staff is trained to put first-time or infrequent visitors at ease throughout their entire experience, so they can truly maximize their relaxation. “The experience is all about melting your stress, and that goes from the moment you walk in the door all the way to floating out!” says Wilson. “Our front desk team will guide you through everything you need to know, like choosing your aromatherapy and how to enjoy all the features of the infrared sauna.”

Wilson is a firm believer in the importance of soothing the mind and body, regardless of whether that’s once a month, once a quarter, or once a year. “As an entrepreneur and mother of two young children—I believe it's important to relax your body and mind so that you can show up the way you want to for your family, career, and life.” It is, after all, why she opened Mood House (both times).

BRINGING HUMANITY TO HOSPITALITY

Chef Sam Hart and the Irreverently Refined Hospitality.

Sam Hart’s life did not take a direct flight to the culinary industry. Instead, there was a pit stop at a liberal arts college, a brief layover in corporate America, and then a series of connecting flights to arrive where they are today: James Beard Award finalist, executive chef, restaurant owner and innovator, and creator of the newly formed restaurant group Irreverently Refined Hospitality.

words ELEANOR MERRELL
photos JONATHAN ELYEA OF UNIFY VISUAL

LLike much of what Sam Hart creates, Irreverently Refined Hospitality departs from the typical in a number of powerful ways. Most notably, it is employee owned, composed of leadership from the hospitality group’s restaurant portfolio. In addition to Sam Hart, key players include Beverage Director Michael Myers, Director of Operations Colbie Browne, Director of Research & Development Ashley Quick, Executive Pastry Chef Faith Morley, and Director of Communications Audra Harman. “We make almost every decision together,” says Hart, “That way, any decision is part of a singular vision after the choice has been made.”

Irreverently Refined Hospitality places emphasis on community involvement. “We believe that our hospitality group has a responsibility to support our community and our farmers in a positive way, and to renew why restaurants began in the first place through nurturing people, telling stories, showcasing the season, and supporting agriculture,” says Hart. Irreverently Refined invests in a number of local organizations, including Time Out Youth, which supports LGTBQ+ teens/young adults; The Relative, which provides support, safety, and resources to vulnerable youth; Art Pop, which increases visibility of and access to local art; and Carolina Farm Trust, which fosters resilient local food systems.

The hospitality group unites three dining concepts, all of which were opened by Hart: Counter-, Maneki, and Spaghett. Counter-, which opened about five years ago, opened with a promise of launching a new dining experience each quarter. Each experience includes multiple courses and a collection of details intended to pique each of the senses. And, in characteristically Hart fashion, their top priority when opening Counter- was to pursue a business model where the whole team could receive livable wages, health insurance, and paid time off — something that is sadly uncommon in the restaurant industry.

OSTERIA LUCA

Maneki, the second restaurant in Irreverently Refined Hospitality’s portfolio, is a pop up turned robatayaki food stall at The Alley at Latta Arcade in Uptown. Here, local proteins and produce are grilled over charcoal flames. The result is old school, no frills, completely delicious skewers and more, plus an exclusive four-seat omakase experience.

Spaghett, the final concept, occupies the historic Young-Morrison house in Fourth Ward. Serving up traditional Italian cuisine typically starring a bed of handmade pasta in the $12-18 range, Spaghett is as approachable as it is delicious. The second floor of the restaurant houses a speakeasy style bar called The Upstairs, where guests will find a separate small bites menu and distinct cocktail menu, exclusively featuring drinks invented before the Young-Morrison house’s construction in 1908.

With these three stars, Irreverently Refined Hospitality has drafted quite the starting lineup. And, with Hart at the helm, we can expect to see the group’s portfolio and community footprint continue to grow.

AN ICON OPENS AT THE BOWL

Rooster’s opens a fourth location in

AA staple restaurant many of us know and love here in Charlotte — one known for its timeless approach and comforting yet elevated cuisine — is expanding for the first time in more than a decade, and getting a fresh look that brings the outdoors into the dining room.

This fall marks the opening of the fourth Rooster’s in North Carolina, but the first new Rooster’s location in 12 years. The new location in Ballantyne at The Bowl brings all the aspects of Rooster’s that have made it a beloved Charlotte institution, but with an updated aesthetic and ambiance. Throughout, you'll notice modern design trends with lighter wood on the tables, chairs and bar, medium brown leather tones, and tall ceilings

and large windows to allow natural light to stream in. The location also boasts a very large covered patio to enjoy the bustle of The Bowl location. It is equipped with fire places and soft seating allowing you to enjoy the outdoors even on cool nights.

Noble first opened the doors of Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen in Winston-Salem in 1992 under the name Noble’s Grille, and it has been a part of the fabric of the North Carolina Triad ever since. Rooster’s in SouthPark opened in 2006 and led the transformational shift in popularity from fine dining to upscale casual dining in Charlotte. Back in 2006, the Charlotte dining scene looked vastly different than it does today. In fact, Chef Jim Noble’s Rooster’s in many ways shaped a

new wave of dining in the city. Rooster’s was refined but welcoming, Southern but internationally-inspired, and known for using regional ingredients—something that would later become something of a trend Noble helped inspire. Uptown would join a few years later, in 2012 inside One Bank of America Center.

In Ballantyne, the timeless menu and culinary perspective remains the same, but the overall feel and design is fresh. While the menu changes seasonally, you can always expect to find locally and regionally sourced proteins, like chicken, short rib, and strip steak, as well as various sides like Margaux’s succotash (named for his daughter), Carolina gold rice, and butter beans.

In this new location, there’s also a unique emphasis on one of Chef Noble’s most beloved pastimes: enjoying the Carolina outdoors.

“This new location was an opportunity for us to delve a little deeper into what Rooster's has evolved into and where we want it to be as a restaurant. For me, there are parallels between what we do in this restaurant and what we do on the river. They both take precision, care, and time. So we brought those two worlds together with our design, incorporating photography of one of

my favorite rivers, the Holston, and an ombre mural by a North Carolina artist to mimic the variations of green you see in a river,” Noble explains. “We’ve [also] sourced all kinds of antique fly fishing equipment like rods and reels as decor. Of course, we still have some of our signature roosters.”

Creative partners at The Plaid Penguin lent their vision to this new brand turn for Rooster’s, as well as helping with many of the interior design details, like the art, photography and antiques.

Since Noble first opened back in 1992, he’s launched many other concepts across N.C. and in Fort Mill, South Carolina, including Noble Smoke, Bossy Beulah's, The Jimmy, Copain Bakery and Field Pea Catering. He says it's a bit “full circle to expand Rooster’s once again. It felt like the right place and time to do it, and it's been great to see it all come together.” Rooster’s Ballantyne is next door to Bossy Beulah’s, which opened in August.

ONE PART HEALTHY SKEPTICISM, TWO PARTS DELICIOUS DESSERTS

Behind the breads at The Accidental Baker.

ELEANOR MERRELL / photos courtesy THE ACCIDENTAL BAKER

When Matt Cabana met the woman who he would one day marry, he briefly worried their relationship might be doomed. The woman of his dreams had one critical flaw: She was gluten free. “When I met her eight years ago, I had never had a gluten free item in my life. Right after I tried one, I knew why,” recalls Cabana.

Food had always played an important role in Cabana’s life. And not just food, but the highest offender of the gluten-free: pasta. Cabana’s Italian-American family passed time together in the kitchen, bonding over shared meals and messy countertops. For Cabana, those years of cooking and baking and eating solidified food and its preparation as a conduit for quality family time, as well as a means of offering care. “Making food is an act of service and a gift,” says Cabana. “I feel that when you give someone something that

you spent time and effort in, that's a gift that really means a lot and can make even just a moment of their day brighter.”

So, how did Matt Cabana go from possessing a healthy (and valid) amount of skepticism of gluten-free food to becoming owner of The Accidental Baker, Charlotte’s best gluten-free bakery? It boils down to love and egalitarianism.

Cabana hoped that his gluten-free girlfriend and her gluten-free family were going to be part of his life forever. He didn’t want bad gluten-free food to be part of his life forever, too. Nor did he feel that bad gluten-free food should be part of his wife’s life forever — or anyone’s else for that matter. “My goal when starting this was not to make food that ‘tasted good for being gluten free;’ it was to make food that was just good, period!” Because, as The Accidental Baker’s motto puts it, “everyone deserves good sh*$.”

Cabana began experimenting with gluten-free recipes when cooking for his wife and her family. He started specializing in baked goods and expanded the range of people he baked for to include his wife’s coworkers, many of whom were also gluten free. When, in September of 2023, Cabana was let go from his corporate job, he spent even more time in the kitchen. At the encouragement of the friends and family who had been his eager culinary guinea pigs for years, he leaned into baking as a profession as well as a passion.

What it is today

Now, The Accidental Baker is a full-fledged business. Cabana rises early (typically 5-6am but sometimes as early as 3am). He bakes out of the Sweet Spots kitchen in Oakhurst, fulfilling orders placed online and prepping for his pop-up, which opens at Metropolitan every Saturday and Sunday from 9am-12pm.

His baked goods have become so tasty that new customers routinely reach out to ask, “Are you sure you didn’t feed me gluten?” Bagels, croissants, sourdough loaves, and chocolate chip cookies are Cabana’s star players and the treats most often mistaken for containing gluten.

Ultimately, when asked how he might respond to someone expressing skepticism about gluten-free baked goods, Cabana is both honest and pragmatic: “I would say that I have done all of the worrying and doubting for them so they don't have to.”

Sample The Accidental Baker by placing an order online or by visiting the bakery’s weekend morning popup at Metropolitan.

FLIGHT’S

TIRAMISU

Flight, a restaurant and wine bar, opened this summer on 7th Street in Elizabeth. The menu has a heavy European influence, and includes lots of shareables, housemade desserts, and an extensive wine list.

When you’re cozied up at the bar this winter, we rec-

ommend ending with the tiramisu. Their take on the iconic Italian dessert features rich espresso, cocoa, and light mascarpone layered with delicate cookies. It pairs well with a hot cup of coffee or a sweeter wine, and is perfect for the season.

Earlier this year, Elizabeth’s Pecan Point shopping center welcomed an intimate cocktail lounge with a speakeasy’s cool vibe and a oneof-a-kind drink menu. When we visited during the soft open, my eye was immediately drawn to an elegant cocktail glass that looked like it had… a cookie smashed onto the side? Salt rims of various sort certainly (tajin, fennel,

even cocoa), but a cookie was new to me. This season, embrace Santa’s favorite treat while you sip the “Tip Toe to the Kitchen,” made with Tito’s Vodka, Montenegro (a bittersweet, citrus-forward liqueur), a twist of orange, a dash of simple syrup, and of course, Sneak’s signature “cookie patch” lining your glass. Cheers!

BILLY SUNDAY’S

PENICILLIN

Billy Sunday, at Optimist Hall in Charlotte, is known for classic drinks and adventurous new creations. Nearly all of the cocktail components are prepared in-house, including syrups, tonics, bitters, and hand-carved ice. One thing they always get right is holiday festivity: Billy Sunday is known for their seasonal popups, and Christmas is one of our favorites. Themed drinks, decor, and a cozy fire outside make for a can’t-miss December date night.

Penicillin is a perfect mix of flavors, made with scotch, Averna amaro, fresh lemon juice, spiced honey, and zesty ginger syrup. The drink comes garnished with candied ginger. Want to make your own spiced honey for at home sips or to wow at parties? Billy Sunday’s bar team suggests combining equal parts honey and water, and then steeping the two with cinnamon, allspice, clove, pineapple chunks, and ginger chunks.

AAfter nearly a decade in fashion, Heather McKeown had an epiphany one Saturday morning while sitting on her sofa in Hawai’i.

She was already spending much of her free time helping friends decorate their homes or retail boutiques for fun, a natural inclination which likely came about since her youth was steeped in her family’s building business. And so she decided it was time to make things official: Heather moved back to the mainland and obtained a formal education in interior design. Land and Sky Designs was born. The business has continued to grow, and recently, Heather expanded her services to offer branding and identity design for their commercial retail and hospitality clients, thus ensuring their signature holistic approach enhances every aspect of the venture.

Here, Heather tells us more about what led her to create her own firm, what working with Land and Sky looks like, and how she stays inspired.

Tell us about the process of working with you from the time the client contacts you to the time of completion.

First I tell the client to take a deep breath because we are going for a deep dive! Before we come up for air we are going to imagine and agree on how each new space is going to both surprise and please them in every way. We of course consider the economics, as getting to the heart of their longterm plan allows us to tailor our approach and maximize their investment. Then the technical process begins--layouts, 3-D renderings, and construction documentation that establishes our designs and specifies how they will appear in final form. Clients get to see what their space will actually look like and virtually experience how it will all flow together. The process ends with the final reveal, where we serve champagne and hand out tissues to wipe the tears of joy. It is our most favorite of days.

What inspired you to begin your career in interior design?

My passion for environments and everyday experiences naturally led me to interior design. Growing up around construction sites, I watched my father, an architect and builder, bring his visions to life. With my mother’s family in development, I had a rich influence from both sides. This upbringing instilled in me an innate desire to create spaces that truly delighted and wowed!

What has been your biggest remodeling or renovation success story?

We’ve experienced some incredible transformations! One of the most striking was a townhome with a stunning NYC waterfront view. We relocated the kitchen to the other side of the house, allowing the family to enjoy the view while cooking and doing dishes. We completely gutted all three bathrooms and bedrooms, making the layout better suit their needs. Adding in custom millwork throughout, railings and unique floor patterns really made for a fresh, distinctive look. The best part is, they still reach out at every major holiday all these years later to express their gratitude and share how much they love their home. Working with such wonderful families like this truly keeps me motivated and smiling.

How would you describe your own style?

I would say my style is serene, clean, and intriguing. While I’m not afraid to embrace bold or unconventional art pieces, I also love the elegance of a classically beautiful, clutter-free room. My personal aesthetic is always evolving as I discover new artisans and immerse myself in different cultures and environments. I enjoy bringing this sense of freshness into the spaces I create.

Favorite Design tagline? “Every room needs a slap in the face.”

Where do you find inspiration? Oh my gosh! Absolutely everywhere and anywhere! Once you train your eye, it’s hard to turn it off! The organic forms and functions of nature are a major influence on my design philosophy, as is fashion and historical architecture. I could design a whole room around one little interestingly patterned fish that I find while snorkeling, or equally, an impressively chic outfit from the runways in Paris. Antiquing is a favorite pastime and a constant source of inspiration.

MAKING MEMORIES

Lisa Sherry Interieurs completed this Foxcroft home makeover for a busy and accomplished Charlotte couple who were looking for a flowing floor plan perfect for two and for entertaining. LSI’s work included complete interior design services, including floor, lighting and color/paint plan, as well as furniture, rugs and accessories/styling.

“One of our first design decisions was to cultivate a very warm, neutral color palette with layers of texture and interest,” Lisa explains. “Even though the children are gone, the home is also very family friendly, by design. The couple’s kids will all be home for the holidays. Christmas 2024 sort

of launches the home!”

Lisa paired her favorite cream Belgian linens with brown and taupe grace notes. The living room is sophisticated, but also very much designed for anything from an elegant holiday soirée to casually opening presents on Christmas morning. The spacious sofa is well over 100-inches and super comfy, and the pair of swivel chairs allow you to take in the whole room — great for making memories.

The upholstery, coffee table and floor lamp are Verellen, the custom rug is by Stark, and the throw pillows are from LSI. The architect is Ruard Veltman. — info — lisasherryinterieurs.com / @lisasherryinterieurs

At Woodshop QC, we specialize in creating custom, handmade wood cabinets which are truly one-of-a-kind.

Our artisan craftsmen use only the finest materials and hardwoods to be certain your new cabinets are not only beautiful, but are also built to last.

MINIMAL AND CHIC

Jena Bula, of Delphinium Design, offers a boutique experience to her Charlotte-area clients. This Foxcroft kitchen, in a custom home built by Keen Building Co. with Alison Hall serving as the architect, was for a client with modern, minimalistic tastes who didn’t want any upper cabinets. In fact, these were repeat clients for the design firm.

To maintain storage solutions, Delphinium designed all of the lower cabinets to be filled with functional storage solutions. They also paneled the fridge and dishwasher to create a seamless look.

“To balance the window on the back wall, we added a single black glass display cabinet on the far left,” Jena explains. “We mixed finishes and paired stained white oak cabinets with a black painted accent island and a plaster hood. The space was styled to play into the black, white, and wood color scheme and finished it off with a runner purchased by our clients on a recent trip to Morocco.”

The appliances are from Queen City Appliances, countertops are Universal Stone, the backsplash tile is Harkey, plumbing by Ferguson and the hardware is from Bird. — info — delphiniumdesign.com / @delphiniumdesign

A LIFE LIVED IN STYLE

Arcadia Homes is the brainchild of Jeremy Schumacher, the president and managing partner of this Charlotte-based custom home builder. Along with partner AJ Foard, and original founders Mike Salamone and Robby Bowers, Arcadia has been creating stunning custom homes all across the greater area since 1994.

This gorgeous South Charlotte project was completed for a young family that came to Arcadia seeking a home with a modern aesthetic that could

still be functional enough for their busy lives. What stands out immediately in the living room is the custom slatted wood ceiling and tile from Tile Collection. The choice of statement pieces elevate the living room into something truly original. Timeless, neutral-colored sofas allow the walls and ceiling to pop, and a careful addition of greenery breathes life into the room. The result is a room that’s photo-op worthy, but still allows for plenty of family time and relaxation. — info — arcadiahomesinc.com / @arcadiahomesinc

COASTAL CHARM

The unique allure of The Palmetto Hotel in Charleston, SC.

words KATE CARLSON
photos courtesy THE PALMETTO HOTEL

IIn Charleston’s Historic French Quarter sits the rare gem of The Palmetto Hotel. The charming yet undeniably luxurious space is situated in the perfect locale for those hoping to explore the architectural history and lively modern developments of the city.

Stepping inside, you’re greeted with a sitting room, the lobby, and a cozy bar. The hotel couples playful design choices with traditional Southern style. Historic black-and-white photos of lively party scenes accentuate the walls surrounding an admirable collection of antiques, and custom upholstery portrays iconic Low Country landscapes. Charleston’s long standing identity as a mecca for inventive fine art is likewise reflected by the hotel’s aesthetics, to this day continuing to accumulate a collection of some of the most celebrated works by local artists.

The rooms themselves are likewise a sight to behold, each furnished with stunning attention to detail reimagining much of the city’s most celebrated iconography. A recurring choice in wallpaper, for instance, harkens back to the fitting name of the hotel, with tranquil palm leaves fanning from floor to ceiling. One of our favorite touches was an exclusive view of the picturesque architecture of the Historic District via en-suite french doors that open to roomy Juliet balconies.

When you’re ready to start the evening, head down to the lobby bar, celebrated by guests for both its moody, sophisticated aesthetic as well as its inventive menu curation. Ambient lighting, brassy gold accents, and dark emerald walls are pinnacles of the elegant appeal of this space. The menu itself, featuring craft cocktails as well as food offerings, does justice to the acclaimed culinary scene in Charleston which continues to draw in so many foodie visitors. Enjoy one of Palmetto’s creative libations accompanied by your choice of their spin on classic bar bites.

A short walk through the Historic District’s French Quarter surrounding the hotel provides a wealth of experiences within the few blocks alone. Just outside sits the widely sought-after view of Rainbow Row, a collection of 13 houses which first gained their vivid reputation in the early 30’s when each was repainted an individual shade of pastel. Additionally, closer to the river sits Joe Riley Waterfront Park, home to the famous Pineapple Fountain, tranquil White Point Garden, and a boardwalk.

Some of the state’s best shopping opportunities are likewise situated near the Historic District, such as the artisanled Charleston City Market or the elevated Charleston Place Shops. Alternatively, if you’d like to explore beyond Downtown Charleston, hop the ferry to spend the afternoon at St. John’s Is-

land to explore the gorgeous inlets by paddle boarding or boating.

After a nice long walk, go for drinks or dessert at one of the many unique locations nearby, such as Firefly Distillery or Carmella’s. 82 Queen is also an excellent spot for weekend brunch or weekly dinner. The restaurant is spread throughout three historic buildings and has a large, charming courtyard shaded by a massive magnolia tree. Expect plenty of Southern hospitality alongside refined Lowcountry cuisine.

With The Palmetto as your homebase, take advantage of the expansive opportunities to explore some of the best the architecture, cuisine, and nature this timeless coastal city has to offer. All the while, enjoy hospitality which boasts the pinnacle of comfort uncompromised by quintessentially Southern aesthetic appeal.

WINTER WISHLIST

Festive fun in the Queen City.

IIn the Piedmont, we don’t often get to enjoy the same hallmarks of winter as our mountain kin: snow-capped roofs, frosty windows, icy ponds. However, that doesn’t stop Charlotte from leaning into the season with an array of wintry and festive activities. Although our ice may be manufactured, our seasonal spirit is authentic.

Curling

The Charlotte Curling Association is a not-for-profit organization that was founded during the 2010 Winter Olympics in order to promote the sport of curling in the Charlotte area. In service of that mission, they host a monthly Cocktails & Curling event during the winter months where newcomers to the sport can learn basic techniques, spend some time on the ice, and participate in a mini match. It’s the perfect way to access a whimsical winter activity in a city with a not-so-wintry climate.

Ice Skating

For more fun on the ice, visit any one of Charlotte’s many outdoor ice skating rinks, most of which are open through early-to mid-January. Spend an evening skating in the light of uptown’s skyscrapers at the Holiday on Ice rink located in front of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Visit the US National Whitewater Center to slice a path along ice trails or weave between two free skate areas. Or, visit Camp North End for a modest, kid-friendly rink erected next to their pop up holiday market.

Holiday Markets

There is no shortage of winter markets in Charlotte, where holiday shoppers can find the perfect, locally-made gift for anyone on their list. Breweries like Lenny Boy, Gilde, Resident Culture, Heist, Protagonist, and Olde Mecklenburg Brewery host largescale weekend popups. Or, stop by any number of the small

towns surrounding Charlotte, like Davidson, Cornelius, and Belmont on select weekends to wander their holiday markets.

Light the Knights Festival

Although Truist Field is home to the Knights baseball team in summer months, in the wintertime this open-air venue in the heart of uptown transforms into a wintry wonderland. A regulation sized ice skating rink and snow tubing course tempt the adventurous among us, while a lights display, holiday market, and spread of treats appeal to young thrill seekers and older chaperones alike.

Nutcracker

Every year, the Charlotte Ballet takes patrons on a whimsical holiday journey in their annual production of the Nutcracker. Set to Tchaikovsky’s dramatic score, this classic delights all ages.

BackStage Lounge

In the spirit of the Prohibition Era, Southbound’s speakeasy is not easy to find. Follow a long hallway to the back of Southbound’s building, step into a phone booth, and speak the code phrase (posted on Instagram) into the mouthpiece to gain entry to BackStage Lounge. From now until New Year’s, you’ll then step into a space that is exploding with Christmas. Floor to ceiling decorations, themed cocktail menus, and a soundtrack of familiar holiday favorites gets the holiday spirit flowing. info qcexclusive.com / @qcexclusive

In Charleston, SC, that’s just one of the many ways the city’s old world charm pairs perfectly with the yuletide season. Stay for New Years to ring in the new year feeling high on potential and energized by activity in a city that teems with old world class and new world verve.
