There's no doubt the travel-themed issues are my favorite issues of each year. After all, I live in Charlotte, not just because it's a wonderful city, but because it really is close to so many amazingly

This issue in particular has more travel-related stories then ever. The content starts out strong in our Arts and Culture section with works by Ivan Depena, Objects of Obsession at the Mint Museum, and world-class styling

Next in our food and drink section, we travel the world right here in the Queen City. We eat French at Coquette, we sample a wide variety at Monarch Market, we drink Italian cocktails at Aria, sample delicious Mexican treats at Puerta and so much more. There really is some wonderful culinary variety

In our home and design issue, the main feature is the talented Lisa Sherry of Lisa Sherry Interieurs, who shares how travel impacts design. We also showcase spaces from Dipped Interiors, Lucy and Company, Copper Builders,

In our travel section we visit an interesting new motor-lodge in the High Country, explore the Blue Ridge Craft Trails, and take a day trip to nearby

Our Exclusives round out this travelcentric issue with several informative top lists. You'll get to know the best of the best in the industry, our favorite places to stay in the Carolinas, and our top 25 things to do this Spring in North and South Carolina from epic hikes in the mountains to beach activities in the

“Mychildren love coming here! Great quality treatment, professional, andkind!”

This one has a little bit of everything for the people that love to travel, so we hope you enjoy! Happy discovering and until next time, cheers.

words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE or courtesy IVAN DEPENA In the studio with Ivan Toth Depeña.

WWhen artist Ivan Toth Depeña begins a new personal project he starts with a question: “Can I get X to do Y and accomplish Z?” Like a jazz musician, he has mastered the foundational rules of his study, and now seeks to break those rules, pushing boundaries “until the work has achieved a unique (visual and conceptual) language.” This process yields work that unfolds sequentially, stitching together a narrative of evolution and iteration, like instruments layering upon one another.

When creating public work, Depeña begins with a different question: Why? He strives to understand the full context of the project, which is typically underpinned by a conceptual or aesthetic problem that invites an original solution. Charlotteans may have sampled Depeña’s work in South End (“Aurum”), Uptown (“Duke Energy Plaza”), Gastonia (“Common Thread”), Cornelius (“Surface”), or, most recently, through the development of the Charlotte Rail Trail pedestrian bridge. Depena works nationally as well with projects like his award-winning series in South Florida.

His projects build on an artistic journey that has been unfurling since he was no older than seven. Inspired by music and the Graffiti Art movement, he decided to attend a high school dedicated to the arts before earning an undergraduate degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for Architecture. This educational background combined with his life experiences and innate curiosity have resulted in an artist who is fluent in a range of disciplines such as drawing, painting, and sculpture.

“Drawing is the medium that comes most naturally to me and the medium I rely on for translating ideas into reality. I see it as another language that can relay a thought with accuracy, while also being capable of extraordinary abstraction and nuance,” says Depeña. Despite his partiality to drawing, he nevertheless weaves together a range of media for many of his projects, seeking the intersection where all elements are working together harmoniously or in purposeful and provocative discord.

In addition to traditional methods, Depeña also integrates technology into his work, which he uses in part to interrogate the creative potential that exists when intention and chance coexist. “Technology allows various ways to approach this desired premise by creating an idea of randomness via software and/or algorithm. A specific example is a robot programmed to randomly carve into my paintings creating unexpected compositions overlaid by a custom computer script that generates marks based on input and prompts,” explains Depeña. “I get involved directly and selectively remove myself throughout the making of the work… It is really enjoyable to see the results of this alchemical process manifest in ways that I directly initiated and yet still be pleasantly surprised by the things I never expected.”

OBJECTS OF AFFECTION

A jewelry exhibit at the Mint Museum you have to see to believe.

OObjects of Affection: Jewelry by Robert Ebendorf from the Porter • Price Collection will run April 27, 2024–February 16, 2025 at Mint Museum Randolph.

Artist Robert Ebendorf's playful and innovative use of everyday objects to create one-of-kind wearable art has stamped his place as one of the most influential artists in the studio jewelry movement. His work is a juxtaposition to cultural preconceptions of fine jewelry. Intricate and striking, he creates dynamic works with found objects, including crab claws, sea glass, plastic, paper, as well as recycled industrial objects like keys, buttons, beer bottle caps, washers, and wire mesh.

The exhibition features more than 180 works of jewelry, metalwork, drawings, and archival materials drawn from the Porter • Price Collection designed by Ebendorf, as well as fac-

ulty and graduates of the metal design program at East Carolina University.

Ebendorf’s work combines exceptional craftsmanship, acquired through traditional training in gold and silversmithing, with the inventive use of found objects and other alternative materials such as acrylic and ColorCore.

Ebendorf had a long career as a professor, culminating at East Carolina University (1997–2016), and the exhibition includes work by 31 graduates and faculty of ECU’s metal design program.

CFINE ART ACCESSIBILITY

Explore CPCC’s network of galleries.

Central Piedmont Community College is home to five gallery spaces, sprinkled across its myriad campuses throughout the Charlotte area. Each plays a different role, both in terms of the growth, stimulation, and education of CPCC’s students and in furthering the college’s relationship with the broader community.

The Dove Gallery is not only the most well known of CPCC’s exhibition spaces, but also the newest. This traditional gallery space hosts the college’s annual juried art show, as well as exhibitions of work by professional artists and community-related shows. The gallery kicked off the year with a showcase of Kenny Nguyen’s work, in a collection titled “Land/mark” that explores cultural identity and displacement.

In 2024, CPCC renovated the Ross and Overcash galleries to transform them from traditional gallery spaces into a new student activity area called The Art Hub. Mural and

chalkboard walls provide canvases on which students can creatively collaborate, adding components as the months pass until a finished piece emerges at year’s end. The Art Hub also includes a photography studio, work spaces, and a year-round student exhibition space. “The goal was to make it fun and engaging and so far it’s been a raging success,“ says Amelia Zytka, Senior Art Gallery Coordinator at CPCC and former CPCC student.

Lastly, each of CPCC’s six campuses houses a Gorelick Gallery. The intention of each Gorelick Gallery is to enhance the accessibility of art. These galleries are never locked, ensuring that the pieces they showcase live in truly public spaces. “The objective is to bring the artwork to students who may not ever set foot in a fine arts gallery, increase the accessibility of fine arts to the public, and introduce students to a wide array of local and regional artists,” says Zytka.

Artists are selected for inclusion at CPCC galleries through an art committee that assess applicants based on the professionalism of their exhibition proposals. All kinds of media are welcome. The committee also at times elects to facilitate art shows that fold in the surrounding community. For example, this fall, the committee will collaborate with the Catawba Cultural Center in Rock Hill to exhibit their artwork in the Dove Gallery.

What sets the CPCC galleries apart from most other galleries in the Charlotte area is that they operate because of and on behalf of CPCC students. The students give these spaces life and color, and in return the galleries give the students opportunities to belong, spark creativity, expand their horizons, and jump-start their post-college careers.

As Amelia Zytka plans for the future of CPCC’s galleries, she sees more of this ahead. “My hope is that the galleries will continue to become more engaging for students in ways that start conversations or gently challenge perspectives,” says Zytka. “I would like students to view art (in all media) as not just something pretty to look at, but as an active form of expression and communication.”

IF FASHION WERE FUN

Curated shopping by Fashivly.

Lwords

Late in the pandemic, when we had all reached pinnacle levels of stir crazy and found ourselves exploring increasingly creative, novel, or just plain strange ways to stay sane and pass the time, Ashlyn Greer found a career. In the fall of 2020, a friend of Ashlyn’s who was feeling unmoored by the sudden absence of dressing for each day, reached out to request a styling session. Greer compiled a few looks and styling notes, which her friend shared on social media, lighting a grassroots fire that led to the launch of Greer’s styling business, Fashivly, in 2021. Since then, the business has recruited stylists all over the country and received nods from InStyle, Refinery29, Bustle, and more.

After booking a style guide, clients receive a detailed questionnaire with prompts related to everything from career to location to style goals to lifestyle. Then, Fashivly stylists pull head-to-toe looks based on the information provided by the client, along with

shoppable links, effectively creating a digital shopping list that is perfectly tailored to the client’s size, budget, and style.

For clients, working with a Fashivly stylist means, above all, saving time. “If you're looking for a pair of jeans and you're 5'1” and curvy, you probably have spent hours reading reviews, trying on 50 pairs of jeans at the mall, and buying and returning frequently. We don't promise magic, but what we can do is give you the top 3-5 options to try for you based on what we know and have seen. It's like a shortcut to shopping,” explains Greer.

Working with a stylist also benefits clients struggling to define their style or blend their separate pieces into cohesive outfits. “If you're someone who knows how they might want to look but you struggle with how to put looks together or what type of shoes go with what pants, what trends you should try and which ones you should leave, that's where we come in,” says Greer.

“At the end of the day what we're trying to do is democratize fashion.
Fashion is and should be fun for everyone!”

Both Greer and her co-founder, Mollye Rivera, have had a passion for fashion from a very young age. For Rivera, that meant showing up to her third grade career fair as a fashion designer; for Greer, that meant imagining how she might style her seventh grade teacher. However, they recognize that this isn’t everyone’s experience with fashion, which is where Fashivly comes in.

“Our typical client is in their 20's, 30's, or 40's and is either looking for a way to revamp their style, or just needs someone to help them put together great looks that they don't have or want to spend the time searching for,” says Greer. In short, the company takes all of the grunt work out of fashion, leaving just the delightful parts behind for clients.

“At the end of the day what we're trying to do is democratize fashion. The fashion industry as a whole gets a bad rap for being incredibly exclusive, elitist, and a little bit out of touch if we're being honest,” says Greer. “Fashion is and should be fun for everyone!”

UPTOWN’S FRENCH FLAIR

Coquette finds a home on Tryon.

In fall of 2023, Uptown welcomed a new French restaurant to Tryon Street called Coquette. This French pâtisserie and restaurant comes from Mother Earth Group, the same team responsible for Fern (a vegan oasis in Dilworth), Mariposa (serving a multicultural menu from their location in Mint Museum Uptown), Hip Pies (also in Uptown), and Something Classic (an elegant catering enterprise and retail offering). Jill Marcus founded Mother Earth Group in 1989, and since then the compassion-forward company has been just as focused on the food they serve as they are on the experiences they create and the relationships they foster.

Coquette is no exception. “Like all of our Mother Earth Group restaurants, Coquette is very personal for both myself and our team,” says Marcus. “We’ve poured ourselves into the menu offerings, the design, and the service to bring Charlotte a true taste of French culture.” The restaurant is intended not only to please aficionados of French cuisine, but also welcome newcomers who might be apprehensive about diving into unknown culinary territory.

Tartes and Tartines

TThere are two sides to Coquette. The first is a pâtisserie directed by Executive Pastry Chef Leressa Rucker that offers coffee and pastries. Visitors can swing through between 8am and 4pm to indulge in sweet treats like a chocolate-dipped eclair, tender canele, or tarte citron. Savory pastries round out the pâtisserie’s food offering with options like a garlic parmesan croissant stuffed with vegetables and herb infused cheese.

Adjoining the pâtisserie is a dining room area, full service bar, and patio space, where Coquette hosts visitors for lunch and dinner service. Executive Chef Cristian Medrano leads the kitchen as it takes on traditional French dishes such as duck fat fried chicken and coq au vin blanc (roasted chicken prepared with mushroom, bacon, and Riesling, served with lemon confit). Additionally, Coquette offers innovative creations like Foie Gras French toast (available from its weekend brunch menu) and a wide selection of charcuterie and fromage.

The beverage program is aided by Advanced Sommelier Fabien Boudart, who oversees a tasteful wine list and is launching a monthly wine club on behalf of Coquette. Members will experience rotating themes intended to introduce palettes to new favorites from a variety of French regions, while also sharing knowledge and context.

Although the restaurant spans across 3,300 square feet, it feels intimate, evoking the quaint friendliness of a French countryside cafe through scalloped dishware, floral print seating, curved cabinetry, a stone accent wall, generous portions, and liberal use of butter. At the same time, high ceilings, marble print tables, and mid century modern brass and navy barstools remind guests that Coquette is very much of-this-century and, for all its countryside flourishes, still true to its location in the heart of a city.

Lunch service is available 11am - 3pm Tuesday through Thursday. Dinner service is available starting at 5pm Tuesday through Saturday. Brunch service is available on weekends 11am - 3pm. The pâtisserie welcomes visitors 8am - 4pm Tuesday-Saturday.

MONARCH MARKET

Visit Charlotte’s newest food hall for flavorful food, fresh cocktails, and a chic seating space.

IIf there’s one thing us humans love to do, it’s come together around food. That’s true no matter the culture—we’ll sit around and swap stories as we pass plates and bowls from one hand to the next, and we’ll eat until we just can’t eat anymore. These days, we might not have as much time as we used to for gathering friends together and deciding on a place to eat, but that’s part of what makes places like food halls so fun and special. By bringing so many different cuisines together in one place, they make it easier to find something for everyone—and in the case of Monarch Market, they do it with style, too.

Monarch Market, which opened recently in November of 2023, is a food hall in Uptown Charlotte that takes pride in offering an eclectic culinary experience to guests. The upscale dining area feels spacious and sleek, with Monarch butterfly motifs pulling the theme together. The food hall offers both booth and table seating, as well as a full-screen projector for events and videos.

As far as the food goes, Monarch Market features one full-service restaurant, Sushi Art, as well as 12 food vendors, including

ones guests can’t find anywhere else. Those vendors include Pha Khao, Rolled AF, and Focaccina. At Pha Khao, guests will find authentic Laotian cuisine from restaurateur Chef Rocky Jokbengboon, and at Rolled AF, they’ll get a taste of modern Mexican food from the owners of two Charlotte food trucks, Nacho Average and 22 Street Kitchen. Focaccina offers yet another type of cuisine, focusing on the love that Chef Albano Barjami and Manuel Scenna have for focaccia bread and Italian flavors— not to mention their delectable desserts, like their handmade cannoli and stuffed croissants.

But guests can find more than just food at this food hall. Like many of Charlotte’s gathering spots, Monarch Market also sells specialty drinks. Guests can head to one of the Market’s three bars: Lanai Terrace Bar, Aster Cocktail Room, and Monarch Bar. Monarch Bar serves as their standard bar space, where guests can order draft beer and basic cocktails without leaving the dining area. For drinks made with fresh tropical juices and bold flavors, the Lanai Terrace Bar is the place to go.

But the hidden gem of Monarch Bar is really the Aster Cocktail Room. Tucked away on the second floor, this speakeasy-style bar serves classic cocktails with high-end spirits and a few modern twists. Those looking for something sweet, yet well-balanced should try The Cherie Berry, which includes Manzanilla sherry, Pasubio Amaro, Spanish brandy, as well as citrus, blueberry, mint, and nutmeg. For something a little more timeless and liquor-forward, guests can’t go wrong with the Reserve Old Fashioned, featuring Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon.

Those who want to check out Monarch Market for themselves can find it at One Independence Center in Uptown, just a short walk from the Lynx Blue Line’s CTC/Arena stop. Not sure what to order first? With the Market’s unique checkout technology, guests can order from multiple vendors at once and pay it all on one tab when they use the To Go booth at the front of the Market.

Warmer weather calls for tropical notes. The Mela Mai Tai at Aria, Uptown’s Tuscan restaurant, delivers on just this, with a grownup spin. ARCO Y FLECHA

Puerta, in Elizabeth, is a cozy, atmospheric Mexican eatery inspired by various regions and flavor profiles.

One of our favorite ways to spend an evening here is to walk through the mezcal lounge into the main dining area, take a spot at the bar and place our go-to order. The trio of fresh tostadas

with puerta pico, salsa roja and salsa verde coupled with the Arco y Flecha is one we come back to over and over.

The Arco y Flecha is a cocktail of Mezcal Union, bourbon, lime, pineapple, agave, egg white, and finished with cinnamon. It’s a well balanced, spirit forward drink that looks pretty darn good, too.

“For me, the sense of inspiration and discovery from travel is more ethereal than specific. It’s not about recreating a room, but about sensual immersion: sights, sounds, texture and even aromas.”

Travel and design are intimately intertwined for designer Lisa Sherry of Lisa Sherry Interieurs. For Lisa Sherry’s clients, home is the ultimate getaway. But where Lisa often seeks and finds inspiration is away from home. In addition to her personal travels, design projects take her all over the country.

“It’s always an opportunity to see people, places and things with fresh eyes…In my world, travel is a beautiful muse,” Lisa shares.

TFor a creative person like Lisa, she finds traveling immensely clarifying and inspiring. “Recreation is essential to creation; it’s the essence of the word.”

Here, Lisa shares more about the intersection of travel with her design process and her dedication to creating homes that feel like the ultimate retreat.

Tell us about your relationship with travel. Are there certain ways to travel or places that you most enjoy?

I’m partial to a loose and flexible itinerary. I like to do the usual things in unusual places, gently immersing myself in the day-today experience of the destination. “Live beautiful” is my mantra. Travel is amazing, but to live beautifully in our own homes is the ultimate experience. This is what I seek to do in my designs. As for the pin drop, overall, I don’t do repeats — in design or travel. I like to look forward. There are exceptions: Paris, for example, the aesthetic that inspires my design studio. We are Lisa Sherry Interieurs, after all.

Are there any places you've visited that left an immediate impression or that you wanted to recreate aspects of?

For me, the sense of inspiration and discovery from travel is more ethereal than specific. It’s not about recreating a room, but about sensual immersion: sights, sounds, texture and even aromas. I’m always incorporating what I see into future projects.

How has your work evolved over the years?

Just like me as a person, my design aesthetic is always evolving. Yet, my approach to design, living and travel for that matter doesn’t really change with fleeting trends and fads. I create organic soulful spaces, very modern and today, with notes of classic grace. Design evolution comes in layers and nuances, all part of a beautiful life.

“ ‘Live beautiful’ is my mantra. Travel is amazing, but to live beautifully in our own homes is the ultimate experience. This is what I seek to do in my designs.”

Are there certain aesthetics that most inspire your work?

For me, it’s all about the mix. Pairing old and new. Sleek and textured. Light and dark. Modern and classic. All in beautiful balance with thoughtful editing, set in a neutral palette with abundant natural light and touchpoints to the organic natural world.

Why do you think it's important to continue to see new things and places to be a designer/artist?

When we travel, we leave home and our comfort zone. The art of travel is really a moveable feast. We carry the experience, pleasure, insights and awakenings uncovered with new places and people into our daily lives... and into our homes. Ultimately, my work is all about creating a beautiful life at home. Travel is an adventure, coming home is an embrace.

HEAD TO TOE

A McAlpine neighborhood remodel by Dipped Interiors.

IIn 2016, a family of five purchased a house in the McAlpine Forest neighborhood of Charlotte, between SouthPark and Matthews. This 3,800 square foot home with four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms had operated as a rental home for years before passing into this family’s hands. Determined to transform it into their dream home, they partnered with Dipped Interiors to reimagine the main floor layout and how it would best suit their needs.

Kitchen

The McAlpine house rests on a beautiful wooded lot, which the family capitalized on by executing a major renovation on the outside of the house a few years beforehand. This resulted in a

covered outdoor living space that includes both a dining area and a living area with an outdoor fireplace and TV. Eager to capitalize on their new outdoor living space and find more opportunities to maximize their beautiful lot, the family asked Dipped Interiors to devise a way to capture more natural light and seamlessly connect their outdoor living space to their indoor living space for next-level entertaining.

Dipped began by removing the small window over the kitchen sink and replacing it with an ActivWall Gas Strut Window. This elegant window hinges from the top and has an exterior sill that’s the perfect place to position refreshments for an easy transition between indoors and out. The Dipped team also removed the demising wall separating the dining room from the kitchen to expand the kitchen footprint and add two more windows.

With the expanded footprint of the kitchen, Dipped was able to increase the size of the island, maximizing storage space and usable countertop, as well as create a walk-through pantry/wet bar. The team sourced a 48” Wolf range with a pot filler, four burners, and a griddle; custom tapered hood by Hoodsly; and a Sub-Zero refrigerator.

They were able to reserve sufficient space for a seating area that replaced the dining room, accommodates up to 12 people, and flows seamlessly into the living room.

Living Room

Dipped Interiors ensured that ample seating was available in this space, knowing how frequently the family enjoys entertaining guests. Crypton Performance Fabric now covers all of the upholstery so it can withstand the demands of daily use and bounce back easily from any spills.

The team also installed French doors to separate the adjacent kids playroom from the living room. In the process, they removed decorative columns that posed a risk to fast-moving kids scampering between the two rooms.

With a new, more open layout on the main floor perfectly

suited to hosting and daily life, the Dipped Interiors team turned their attention to the family’s final wishlist area: the primary bathroom.

Primary Bath

Fresh cabinetry and a brand new independent tub spruced up the primary bath, giving these homeowners a new sanctuary to retreat to while the rest of the main floor was being remodeled. Floating shelves by P.S. Carpentry offer a unique display for decor as well as tidy storage, and accent wallpaper from Megan Daisy Milner Art gives this nook a pop of color.

Thoughtful updates like these from Dipped Interiors helped transform this McAlpine house into a forever home for a family of five Charlotteans. Now equipped as perfectly for entertaining guests as for the moments that comprise daily life as a family, this house will certainly bear witness to many happy moments for years to come.

A KITCHEN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

With 15 years of industry experience, Emily Hodge has touched nearly every facet of the design business, with a focus on bespoke residences for families creating their forever homes.

The primary goal of this home renovation was to create what Emily describes as “a far better use of space, one that functioned for their growing family.” The original floor plan had an enclosed kitchen with a breakfast nook, so the team removed two major walls to open the space, allowing for a large

island, but also closed off part of the space to build a bar on the kitchen side and a pantry/mudroom on the other side.

“We spent a lot of time during the planning process to discuss the habits of their family… We tailored each space to their specific habits. Then, we made it beautiful.”

The tile is from Walker Zanger in Charlotte, and the light fixtures are from Darnell and Co in Charlotte. The plumbing is Brizo and the decorative grilles in the bar cabinets are from Katonah Hardware. — info — emilyhodgedesign.com / @emilyhodgedesign

NO ORDINARY DINING ROOM

Beth Keim, owner of design firm Lucy and Company, has always been known for using color, multiple textures, and patterns. As she describes it, she’s also a designer who finds inspiration in all sorts of places: Seeing architecture, color combinations, textiles, pottery and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces “can all start an entire design in my mind.”

This room began with the color green, which Beth says is normally the last thing she picks. Next came the large custom Stark rug and the addition of the striking chandelier.

“The fun began with the curved sofa upholstered in a rich teal performance velvet and a custom organically curved dining table Josh Utsey created specifically for this project,” Beth explains.

To maintain space but still provide storage, 2-Dash-1 designed and built the two large storage cabinets. Beth used a mix of accessories and mismatched chairs and selected the art with her clients. The piece, purchased at Anne Neilson Fine Art, is by artist Juniper Briggs. — info — lucyandcompany.com / @lucyandcompany

STATEMENT LIVING

A native of Charlotte, Wade Miller founded Copper Builders after a lengthy career in custom home building. He and CEO Tim Pratt guide the vision of the company. This beautiful room was part of a project they completed in SouthPark. The team crafted a model home tailored for custom clients, and simplified their journey towards building their dream homes. The guiding design was “organic modern,” blending clean lines and natural textures without straying too far from a Southern aesthetic. They incorporated white oak and grasscloth wallpaper to lighten the space. White oak beams complement the

light wood floors for a modern approach to a traditionallooking main living space.

Collaboratively designed by Melissa Lee of New South Home and Copper’s in-house designer Hodges Miller, the room effortlessly marries contemporary style with warm elements. Addressing the challenge of making large living spaces with high ceilings feel inviting, the designer team added warmth for balance, creating an elegant and modern gathering place that’s still plenty cozy.

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE MEETS HIGH COUNTRY SPIRIT

Rhode’s Motor Lodge & Canteen welcomes guests in Boone.

words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos courtesy RHODE'S MOTOR LODGE

In spring and early summer, pockets of western North Carolina burst into vibrant magenta and Fuschia hues as the mountainous region’s rhododendrons bloom. Amid a thicket of these signature plants, near the intersection of Highways 321 and 221 close to downtown Boone, the Rhode’s Motor Lodge & Canteen opened its doors in the fall of 2023, taking its name from these colorful plants.

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 69 TRAVEL ACCOMMODATIONS • PLACES • ADVENTURES

RRhode’s fosters its own vibrancy: a vibrancy of character born from the camp-inspired design of this one-of-a-kind boutique hotel.

“The development of the Rhode’s Motor Lodge and Canteen brand was influenced by the property’s mid-century modern history and the outdoor adventure spirit of Boone,” said Christine McDonald, creative director for the group that owns Rhode’s, Raleigh-based Loden Hospitality. “We strived to combine the essence of a mountain lodge with a mid-century modern motel offering 21st century amenities and comfort.”

If the name Loden Hospitality sounds familiar, then it may be because you are acquainted with downtown Raleigh’s midcentury modern gem, The Longleaf Hotel. Before passing into the hands of Loden Hospitality, The Longleaf existed as a nondescript Travelodge, but is now known globally for its stunning transformation into a destination for locals and visitors alike.

Like The Longleaf, Rhode’s Motor Lodge found new life

in part through the capable hands of Joshua Gajownik, who paired details that nod to the nostalgia of motor lodges with refined details that make the modern traveler feel at home.

Inside guests will find custom furnishings like tree trunk nightstands, pendant light fixtures that evoke tent lights, three-legged camp stools, and Rhode’s-branded Coleman coolers that guests can take on their Boone area adventures.

The 54 rooms are a mix of king, double queen, and king with daybed suites, all of which are outfitted with 300 thread count bed linens, luxury wool blankets, 43-inch smart TVs, mini fridges, and in-room safes. More than half of the rooms also provide guests with private balconies that offer mountain views.

Communal spaces at Rhode’s include a covered front patio with a fire pit and Adirondack chairs, a broken terracotta tile fireplace bordered by cozy chairs and birchwood banquettes in the lobby, a pool table and bar area, and more outdoor, firepit-studded living space off the lobby.

The in-house restaurant at Rhode’s, Canteen, serves breakfast and dinner, offering casual fare often inspired by Appalachian ingredients and sourced in part from local purveyors. For example, breakfast menu offerings include smoked trout and cream cheese bagels, gouda grit breakfast bowls, and Cathead biscuit eggs benedict. Dinner offerings range from fried catfish po’ boys to slow-cooked wagyu beef brisket to vegetarian salad bowls. Libations include a blend of classic and innovative cocktails, North Carolina beers, and wines by the glass.

“Rhode’s and Canteen are purposefully designed to appeal not only to out-of-town guests but also to locals. This isn’t a typical hotel experience,” says McDonald.

It’s the perfect place to set up basecamp during a weekend exploring the High Country and everything it has to offer, from a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, to football games at Appalachian State University, to hikes on Grandfather Mountain in the summer and ski days at Appalachian Ski Mountain in winter.

THE BLUE RIDGE CRAFT TRAILS

The arts, craft, history, and heritage of the North Carolina mountains and foothills.

TThe Blue Ridge Craft Trails project, a comprehensive online guide developed by the nonprofit Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, allows visitors to experience artists in their studios, browse galleries, and uncover the history of this diverse region. There are more than 350 curated stops across the North Carolina mountains and foothills, from recognizable destinations like Asheville and Blowing Rock to lesser known towns such as Brasstown and Clyde.

“Craft is in the DNA of this region,” explains Angie Chandler, Executive Director of the Blue Ridge Natural Heritage Area. “Nothing connects you to a place—or to new memories—like a face to face meeting with inspired artists and their work.”

Craft art is unique in its function: Unlike paintings or sculptures, craft is a form of making an object that generally has a function: such as something you can wear, drink from, or use in your home.

The earliest traditions of craft in this area are owed to the

Native Americans who originally called the Blue Ridge home: the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The town of Cherokee, NC offers 12 craft trail stops, including the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, the nation’s oldest and foremost Native American crafts cooperative.

Once you’re ready to go, adapt BlueRidgeCraftTrails.com to your interests. Search for the town you’re visiting and meet the artists in their studios. Shopping for a gift or home decor? Search the entire site by the type of craft, from pottery to furniture. Ready for hands-on experiences? Put the word “instruction” in the search bar to find a list of trail stops offering classes to the public.

The website also offers ready-made itineraries complete with options for lodging and local fun.

No matter what you choose, you’re sure to have a culturally-rich, perfectly tailored experience of North Carolina unlike any you’ve had before. Here are just a few of our favorite events and stops along the Trails.

VISIT

Mitchell and Yancey Counties are home to the Toe River Arts Studio Tour, one of the longest running studio tours in the country. The June 2024 Studio Tour will be held May 31 –June 2, luring guests from across the Southeast and featuring nearly 100 artists.

No matter the time of year, Burnsville (in Yancey County) and Spruce Pine (in Mitchell County) offer great places to spend the night, find local food—and more craft trail stops.

One worth a visit is Hearth Glass and Gallery in Burnsville. Founded in March 2022 by third-generation glassworker Keikichi Littleton, it’s the only all-glass gallery in the Toe River

region. Harvey Littleton, grandfather to Keikichi, is widely considered the father of the studio glass movement.

Another favorite element of the Trail is the opportunity to explore nationally-recognized craft schools, such as Brasstown’s John C. Campbell Folk School, opened in 1925. The Penland School of Crafts, open since 1929, is a quick 15 minutes away from Spruce Pine. The Penland Gallery and Visitors Center showcases museum quality art for purchase.

Finally, perhaps one of the most known stops is the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville. It’s well worth a visit for the many craft-making demos on-site, and the wide variety of different craft mediums, including clay, wood, fiber, metal, glass, and leather.

STAY

Once you’ve mapped out where you want to stop, you can find great spots to call homebase.

An easy drive from Charlotte will land you at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock. Chetola offers a spa, on-site dining, and a quaint lodge. Nearby, on the Crafts Trail, visit High Country Candles, Bolick & Traditions Pottery, Mountain Thread Company and Moses Cone Memorial Park on the Parkway.

Further west, in Highlands, you can visit The Bascom: A Center for Visual Arts. In 2009, The Bascom completed construction of its current campus on a former horse farm. At its 30,000 square foot flagship building, visitors can share in both the art and surrounding nature.

Highlands’ 200 Main offers comfortable (and pet-friendly!) lodging, or, if you’re looking for a full retreat, you can’t beat Old Edwards

Inn and Spa. The charming Main Street offers plenty of options for dining, coffee, local shops, and more. We like Henry Farmhouse Tavern for dinner and Calder’s Coffee for an early morning.

In Cashiers, only 20 minutes away, explore the Mountain Mist Gallery, Zachary-Tolbert House, or make an appointment at Wofford Sculpture Studio.

No matter how you piece together your visit to the Craft Trails — a single stop amidst a longer trip or an itinerary built around all your desired stops with classes, events, and artist visits — your support and enjoyment of the project is a way to feel connected to the deep history of our region, and to support artists who have been sharing in traditions centuries old.

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Banner Elk offers outdoor adventures, like amazing hikes and bike riding in the warm weather and skiing in the winter. There's also a charming downtown full of local shops and eateries, including one of our favorites: Artisanal.

Pinehurst, NC

Known as the "Home of American Golf," Pinehurst boasts world-class golf courses and a quaint Southern atmosphere that beckons visitors year-round. This year in particular is a very special year for the town, as they are the host of the 2024 U.S. Open.

Sylva, NC

This vibrant mountain town combines a rich Appalachian heritage with modern amenities, offering cultural experiences, outdoor recreation, and a thriving arts scene. The downtown is charming with amazing shops, and surprisingly, for a town of this size, the culinary scene is wonderful, too.

Manteo, NC

My personal favorite spot in the Outer Banks, Manteo is steeped in history and coastal beauty. The town is a waterfront gem featuring historic sites, scenic views, and access to the Outer Banks' most pristine beaches.

Highlands, NC

Perched atop the Southern Appalachian Mountains, Highlands has the best of both worlds: small downtown charm and beautiful surrounding nature. There are plentiful shops and restaurants plus some of the best waterfalls in the state. Nearby Cashiers is a great town too. For hiking enthusiasts, Whiteside Mountain is phenomenal and boasts epic views.

SMALL SC TOWNS

Landrum SC

This equestrian-centric town is highly underrated. Not far from Spartanburg, Landrum exudes Southern charm, with beautiful horse farms, antique shops, and a quaint downtown perfect for leisurely strolls. Visitors can also enjoy the nearby foothills and mountains.

88 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM EXCLUSIVES

Bluffton, SC

Nestled along the May River, the small Southern town of Bluffton has really come alive in the last decade, offering a laid-back coastal lifestyle. Bluffton has a ton of charm with its picturesque streets, historic district, and thriving culinary scene. Farm is one eatery we come back to again and again.

Beaufort, SC

This town is one of my favorite places to shoot photographs. It has so much character and is rich in history and Lowcountry charm. Beaufort boasts wonderful architecture, scenic waterfront vistas, and a vibrant arts scene that we love. It's quiet, too! And if you like beaches, one of our favorites, Hunting Island State Park, is just down the road.

Travelers Rest, SC

Aptly named, Travelers Rest offers a welcoming atmosphere and serves as a gateway to South Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, providing outdoor adventures and culinary delights. This area is less popular than the mountains in North Carolina, and that's exactly what we like about it. Nearby rugged places like Table Rock and Caesars Head also offer amazing nature opportunities.

McClellanville SC

If you enjoy a slower pace, well this town is for you. This small South Carolina town is surrounded by pristine marshlands and wildlife refuges, including the diverse Cape Romain. There's several amazing beaches only accessible by boat as well as a historic lighthouse.

HIKES

Art Loeb Trail

Maybe you'll see a bear which is amazing, but you'll also see some of the most spectacular views in the Carolinas. Walking atop a bald during some of the trail offers you the chance at panoramic views. Art Loeb is also a great place to camp and see the stars.

Hebron Rock Colony

I've been rock jumping here for over 25 years and it doesn't get old. Boone Fork is a stunning river that cascades down from the Blue Ridge Parkway towards Foscoe over giant boulders. This is a challenging and fun hike that's sure to pump the adrenaline a little bit. When you visit, watch for watersnakes!

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 89
FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Pinehurst, Manteo, McClellanville, Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton

Cox Mountain Trail

There's not a lot of things better than hiking under a forest canopy next to the banks of the Eno River. There are lots of birdwatching and wildlife opportunities here, too.

Grandfather Trail

If you had to do one trail in North Carolina, for me, it would be the Grandfather Trail. It's got it all: There are ropes and ladders, epic views, diverse landscapes, changing weather. The trail is genuinely awe-inspiring.

Table Rock Trail

I love the Table Rock Trail in NC, but the hike to South Carolina's Table Rock summit, for sweeping views of the Upstate, is even more rewarding. This is a challenging and longer hike but worth every step.

WATERFALLS

Cullasaja Falls

If I could only visit one waterfall in North Carolina for the rest

of my life, this would be the one. It's in a beautiful area close to a town I love, and the powerful falls themselves give you a feeling of awe when you stand next to them.

Brasstown Falls

I cannot wait to revisit this gem nestled in Sumter National Forest. I really feel like this entire forest is an underrated area with so much nature to offer. Brasstown Falls is one of the more picturesque falls and has all the wow factors.

Rainbow Falls

I personally have never seen the rainbow shine on Rainbow Falls. I have been several times, either too late in the day or on a cloudy day, so I am anxious to get back to Gorges State Park this fall to experience what it actually is known for. Regardless, it is truly beautiful on its own.

Catawba Falls

Rumor has it this one is reopening, and if that really is the case, I cannot wait to revisit. It's a spectacular fall with a beautiful shape that makes it fun to photograph.

90 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM EXCLUSIVES

Isaqueena Falls

I have never been to this one, so I am excited to finally check it out. There's a lot of local lore behind this waterfall: It's said to enchant visitors with its graceful descent into a scenic gorge, surrounded by the natural beauty of the South Carolina mountains.

BEACHES

Crystal Coast

One of the most pristine areas in the state, here you can enjoy beautiful beaches, quaint coastal towns, historic lighthouses, and a laid back lifestyle.

Hunting Island State Park

One of my all time favorite beaches to visit, this area of the Lowcountry is lush and diverse. The beach here is pristine, there's maritime forests, and even historic landmarks at South Carolina's most popular state park. It's got it all, plus it's close to one of my favorite South Carolina towns: Beaufort.

Ocracoke

Peaceful, calm, quiet but charming and beautiful. Sounds like a dream, doesn't it? This island off the coast of North Carolina has it all for the beach enthusiast. Here, you can drive on the beach, see the lighthouse, enjoy the village, and relax your vacation away. You might even end the day with a sunset sail.

Huntington Beach State Park

Just south of Myrtle Beach is one of my favorite beaches in the Carolinas. Huntington Beach State Park has a great campground for your home base. Plus, it's very close to the majesty of Brookgreen Gardens, is next to Atalaya Castle for history buffs, and has plentiful wildlife including alligators and a variety of birds. Plus the beach is quiet and clean. This is a special place.

Corolla

There's so many reasons to love this area, but the offroading to see wild horses makes it extra special. I love photographing them and cannot wait to go back. The area is relaxed and great for families, too!

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 91

Cape Island Beach

This is the least crowded beach I have ever been to in the Carolinas. It makes Capers Island look overrun. Cape Island, a 30 minute boat ride from McClellanville, SC through Cape Romain National Refuge, is a small sliver of land at the edge of the world. If you do make it out there, you more than likely will be the only person there!

VIEWS

Pretty Place

There are views, and then there's Pretty Place. Here, sunrise in particular is incredible. Witnessing the reds and oranges across the sky here is a spiritual experience.

Grandfather Mountain Swinging Bridge

I don't recommend this for those scared of heights, but everyone else should definitely do this at least one. The Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain offers panoramic views and an exhilarating experience. While you're on the mountain, I suggest heading on over to the wildlife habitats or hitting a trail like the heart-pumping Grandfather Trail.

Jump Off Rock

Take in panoramic views of the North Carolina mountains from Jump Off Rock, a scenic overlook in Laurel Park near Hendersonville. This one is so easy to get to: Simply drive right to the top and the overlook and take in the stunning sunsets and photo opportunities year-round.

Caesars Head State Park

Marvel at the sweeping vistas of the South Carolina Upstate from Caesars Head State Park. This may just be the best view in the entire state. Here, rugged cliffs and dense forests create a dramatic backdrop for all of your outdoor adventures.

Sassafras Mountain Overlook

A fun and scenic drive on US 178 leads you to Sassafras Mountain overlook. Here, you can take in the highest point in South Carolina and enjoy breathtaking views of the foothills below. I used to think the mountains of North Carolina were unmatched, but after visiting this area for the first time last year, I realized SC has some incredible and underrated views, too!

ROADS

Blue Ridge Parkway

This one's a no brainer, but let me be a little bit more specific with where I think you should visit on the Parkway. Obviously the area near Blowing Rock is a well-known and picturesque spot. But, this summer, let's go a little further south, like below Asheville to the area north of Cherokee. This is where some of the best views in NC are. Waterrock Knob, Thunder Struck, Cowee Mountain Overlook. I mean, for me, there isn't a better stretch of road in the South.

Old NC 105

You're going to want AWD or four-wheel drive if you want to really enjoy this road, because it is bumpy. For those that like that though, this is a fun drive. Plus, Old NC 105 has wonderful views of Lake James, access to Linville Gorge, and is really close to places like Wiseman's View and Linville falls.

Route 17

If you love lush forests and live oak canopies covered in Spanish Moss, plus a chance to see some beautiful historic spots,

then this stretch of road is for you! Travel along South Carolina's coastal Route 17 for a scenic drive dotted with charming towns like Georgetown, McClellanville, Pawleys Island, Edisto, Beaufort, and Bluffton, plus historic landmarks, and picturesque views of the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean.

Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway

Experience the beauty of the South Carolina Upstate on this scenic byway, meandering through rolling hills, lush forests, and charming small towns. There's plenty of beautiful waterfalls along this route, too.

Cherohala Skyway

I've only driven this road two times and both were memorable. I remember thinking to myself how some of the views rivaled the Parkway, but there wasn't a single other car on the road other than us. Plus, there are some great lakes including Lake Santeetlah and Fontana nearby. While out there in far western NC, I also recommend you visit Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.
