S

ummer in the Carolinas. Does it get any better? I really don't think it does. Obviously, with the extenuating circumstances that have occurred over the past months, there are a lot of unknowns and uncertainties, and a lot of things that have changed. But, enjoying summertime, for us doesn't have to be one of those things. We are lucky to live in such a great area with so many opportunities. In just several hours you can go explore the Lowcountry of South Carolina. A couple more hours and you can be lounging on a remote beach on the Outer Banks. Go in the opposite direction, and you're in the mountains of the Blue Ridge. Since we dedicated this year's travel issue to the former, we're going to dedicate our summer issue to the latter. This issue's Exclusives are all about exploring the hills, valleys, rivers, and trails of our Western Carolina mountains. You'll find everything you need to know to plan your trip from our favorite hikes (all just several hours or less from Charlotte) and outdoor activities to the best mile markers on a day drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the waterfalls you have to see to believe, and the Blue Ridge hotels that are perfect for relaxing. Hopefully this issue will get you planning your next adventure, and from Boone to Asheville to Cherokee and beyond, there really isn't a better place to social distance and take in the beauty of nature. Safe travels and we'll see you next issue! Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Editor | Brett Barter, Publisher

Katherine Boxall was in elementary school, enjoying an active childhood in Ottawa, Canada, when her class took a field trip to the nearby National Art Gallery. As her peers and teachers sped through the gallery, counting down the minutes until they could depart, Boxall lingered. “I was looking over my shoulder with this heaviness in my heart because I wanted to go back and look longer,” remembers Boxall. “By the time the field trip made it to the modern art section and all the other kids were saying, ‘This is so dumb, I could do that,’ I was busy thinking, wow, I would really, really like to try to do any of this.” Despite the mark this early memory left on young Boxall, she spent the remainder of her education acquiring a breadth of knowledge. She took classes in business, psychology, mathematics, accounting, and marketing, before fully embracing art late in her undergraduate career. That diverse skillset accounts partially for Boxall’s impressive resume; after undergraduate, Boxall landed a job with fashion designer Greta Constantine, designing digital creative content. Later, after attaining an MFA at San Francisco Art Institute, she followed her boyfriend to Charlotte, where she once again put her knowledge to use and obtained a marketing position at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation.

“I think making art became my personal extension of that desire to escape, play, better understand reality, sometimes control, and other times be spontaneous.” 32 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

Although Boxall has filled supporting roles for the artist community, she belongs center-stage as an artist. Her work, each piece often enormous in size, elicits open-mouthed awe, and has been exhibited in Canada, Australia and the United States. Her process is both intentional and intuitive, big and small. She tests colors, textures, compositions, and other elements on small canvases placed aside her massive and final canvas. She follows her intuition as she tests, then intentionally compiles each element in her final composition. “The smaller works act like continuously evolving sketches,” says Boxall. “They keep me intuitive, fresh, and bold while leaving me with a map and the confidence to attack my larger and more thoughtful work.” Her bread and butter throughout undergrad was representational figurative painting using oil paint. During her stint at San Francisco Art Institute, she discovered a box of acrylic and house paints in the basement of her apartment building and resolved to experiment with them. Now, she has expanded her repertoire to abstract and mixed media painting. Her expansive artistic wheelhouse affords Boxall the creative flexibility she craves. “When I was a kid I loved creating imaginary worlds and playing characters with my friends.

“Lots of times I’m excited to share my work and excited that it can be just about the excitement and wonder of color and texture, but other times it’s more personal, and I don’t have to share.” I think making art became my personal extension of that desire to escape, play, better understand reality, sometimes control, and other times be spontaneous,“ muses Boxall. After a year at the McColl Center, Boxall departed to pursue a part-time position at Jerald Melberg Gallery at the corner of Providence and Sharon Amity, which afforded more time for her art. Now, she’s represented by Jerald Melberg Gallery with a solo show there slated for the end of 2020 or early 2021 Intrinsic to Boxall’s process of creation is the delight of having the power to choose; she exercises total control over each canvas, which offers an unbiased repository for pure

expression. “Lots of times I’m excited to share my work and excited that it can be just about the excitement and wonder of color and texture, but other times it’s more personal, and I don’t have to share,” says Boxall. “Ultimately, I love having this choice.” Although no one would begrudge Boxall the decision to keep her pieces to herself, we as viewers are far better off each time she elects to introduce them to the public. info katherineboxall.com / @katherineboxall

Enjoy music from the safety of home as Charlotte Symphony unveils their 2020 plans: A new virtual concert series, al fresco. This new series will feature a different ensemble of Charlotte Symphony musicians each week, performing a variety of works and giving a glimpse into the music and into their lives as performing musicians. Charlotte Symphony al Fresco will be hosted by Principal Cellist Alan Black and will take place in his backyard in Woodberry Forest, Charlotte. The concerts will be free. Interim President and CEO Michelle Hamilton said, “I’m impressed every day by the musicians of the Charlotte Symphony. This series of 'al fresco' concerts is a wonderful example of their innovative spirit and commitment to their artistry and the community. I’m so thankful to Alan for allowing us all into his backyard so we can continue to share together in the joy of music.” The first concert in the series is dedicated to hope and healing for our community. The Charlotte Symphony believes

36 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

that music is uniquely able to console and uplift, that it can help bind a community together and even act as a change agent. The concert, which features cellist Alan Black and harpist Andrea Mumm as soloists, includes works that inspire introspection by Bach, Vaughan Williams, Arvo Pärt, and Saint-Saëns. Principal Cellist Alan Black said: "For the past four years, I have been creating a backyard space with the intent to host concerts. When COVID-19 shut down the world I immediately thought that this was an opportunity for me to use this space with two goals in mind: to provide live intimate performances to our community, and to give CSO musicians, and my friends, the chance to play together again in a safe way. I am hoping that achieving these goals will bring happiness and joy for all involved, and help get us through the difficult times we are encountering." info charlottesymphony.org / @cltsymphony

38 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

From an early age, Erin Foley knew she wanted to be a seamstress. As a child, she practiced her craft with a plastic sewing machine, making fashionable purses for her dogs to wear. Eventually Erin followed her passion into college where she attained a degree in Fashion Design and Marketing. According to her, sewing has always been part of her desired career path. Today, Erin is the owner of RCB Fashion, a boutique based in Charlotte. Over the years, Erin has gained a massive following for her unique custom garments and wedding gowns, as well as her topof-the-line alteration skills. Erin sat down with us to discuss RCB Fashion, designing, and the inspiration behind her custom wedding dresses.

“Providing quality work is always my number one goal but it goes deeper than that. I strive to provide comfort. I want each client that walks through the door to feel like they are home.” Why did you choose your NoDa location? NoDa lured me in when I first moved here with all its creative people and businesses. My very first shop in Charlotte was at the Hart Witzen Gallery.Between living and working in the area, I have made bonds with other local business owners and residents. It’s not uncommon for several business owners to collaborate on a photo shoot where we can all showcase our talents, wedding gown, flowers, cake, photography, etc. What is the significance of your business name? I am actually surprised I do not get asked this more often. Back in my college days, I started my first company, Rock Cherry Bomb, where I made retro/alternative clothing and reworked band t-shirts into different clothing items. Once I started to transition to sewing more as a service and dabbling into wedding dresses, I knew this name wouldn’t work anymore. That’s when I started RCB Fashion, using the ini-

40 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

tials as a nod to my first business venture! Over time, RCB Fashion dominated Rock Cherry Bomb until I finally dissolved it. Tell us about the process of offering custom garments. In recent years, it’s become popular for a bride to want to repurpose or modernize their grandmother or mother's wedding gown. I always have a lot of fun with these because it is almost like a puzzle to take apart what we already have to work with and piece it back together in a new fashion. This is a wonderful way for a bride to put some of her own personality into the gown, while keeping the sentimentality of wearing an heirloom from their family. As their fittings progress to the final style, the excitement and amazement in their faces is evident. I find it very rewarding to be able to create something updated and beautiful to make a bride feel confident and beautiful on her wedding day.

Heather Krengel and Sheila Tierney are the enterprising duo behind Lotus Soul Cafe, a homeopathic wellness shop specializing in organic fare and spiritual wellbeing. From gourmet toast to kombucha on tap to health and wellness workshops, these ladies have created a one of a kind space for healing—be it physical, mental, or spiritual.

44 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

Prior to opening Lotus Soul Cafe in 2019, Heather owned a meditation practice and worked in corporate medical sales, while Sheila held executive roles in global operations and management. Their shared passion for holistic wellness, combined with their desire to help others, was the catalyst for opening the shop.

“Our love to serve others, coupled with our mutual respect for each other and this planet, runs deep.” “Our love to serve others, coupled with our mutual respect for each other and this planet runs deep,” Heather said. The businesswomen first met through their daughters, who happened to be in the same elementary school class. What started as a casual relationship, soon turned into a genuine friendship, and eventually, a serendipitous career change. Using their unique experiences and backgrounds, they left the corporate world and followed their joint passion for wellness. “We believe our partnership was a great match due to Sheila's extensive business, marketing, and services background along with my healthcare, sales, and spiritual background,” Heather said.

46 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

Heather and Sheila chose to name the cafe after the symbolic lotus flower, which makes its home in murky rivers. Each night the flower descends below the surface only to rise again in the morning, remarkably radiant despite its daily journey through the muck and the mud. Heather first encountered its symbolism when she began meditating for postpartum depression and PTSD after the birth of her first child. The profound metaphor has stuck with her ever since. “Our tagline ‘Rise. Bloom. Radiate.’ was birthed from the practice of the lotus flower’s journey from muddy waters into sunlight each and every day,” Heather explained. “Our highest hope for the cafe, and our mission statement, is to help our guests rise, bloom, and radiate to their highest selves through our food, services, and environment.”

“Our plan is to find other communities where we can help educate, heal, and make a positive impact.” The atmosphere of Lotus Soul Cafe is earthy and comfortable. Heather jokes that it’s a “California organic space where Gandhi and Oprah decided to have tea and toast.” According to her, the cafe was designed thoughtfully with an emphasis on calming elements such as wood, tile, and plants in mind. Even the concrete floors are polished with organic products. As far as their food offerings go, Lotus Soul Cafe’s menu prioritizes nutrition and flavor. The dishes were custom created with affordability, health, and local purveyors in mind. “We sneak in superfoods and veggies in almost every single offering,” Heather explained. “Our offerings are unique to this area, such as adding frozen cauliflower to smoothies or our crazy-popular, homemade, gourmet beet hummus toast.” Alongside their delicious organic cuisine, the cafe also offers wellness workshops, meditation classes, and support groups. But most importantly, Lotus Soul offers its guests a sense of community and belonging. “We love community, and our plan is not to stop in Cornelius but continue to find other communities where we can help educate, heal, and make a positive impact,” Heather said. "We want to continue spreading good vibes all around through food, classes, services, communion, and just relaxing in a cool space.” At its core, the Lotus Soul Cafe is all about nourishing the mind, body, and soul. Together Heather and Sheila have created a one of a kind space, where each day guests are encouraged to radiate. info lotussoulcafe.com / @lotussoulcafe

The Best at Natural Stone. The Best at Porcelain.

Porcelain is the hot new trend for countertops but, due to the challenges it brings, few fabricators are willing to work with it. We looked at its arrival on the scene differently. Three years ago, we flew to Italy, where the product is made, to learn from the best fabricators in the world. We are Charlotte’s experts for porcelain countertops, fireplaces, and shower surrounds.

When Pierre Bader first decided to open the wine bar and shop Cicchetti, he knew he had something special. As a local restaurateur with a legacy that includes his former restaurants, Monticello, Sonoma, and Arpa Tapas, Bader is no stranger to executing exceptional dining experiences. In fact, Monticello,

which first opened in 1991, helped pioneer the movement of bringing locally sourced food to Charlotte patrons. Still, even with all of his past concepts and experiences, he knew Cicchetti would be different. experience. Instead of a long food menu with tons of entrees, Cicchetti serves only small plates and shareable options. The eatery has already made a name for itself with its distinctive Venetian-style polpette, or meatballs, and its bruschetta bar. Cicchetti also features fresh seafood, including octopus, oysters and mussels, in many of its dishes. While the small plates will surely keep many patrons coming back for more, it’s the dedicated wine bar that truly steals the show at Cicchetti. In addition to classic red and white wines like pinot noirs and chardonnays, Cicchetti also boasts a full cocktail menu, curated by local mixologist Bob Peters.

Patrons can order all kinds of mixed drinks. The menu’s sweet bellinis are excellent for ordering on their own or alongside a light dish, while the lip-puckering aperitivi are perfect for whetting a patron’s palate before diving into the wine bar’s heartier meals. And after lunch or dinner? Finish up with a drink off their digestivi menu. Cicchetti’s authentic Venetian small plates, coupled with its expansive wine menu, make it an excellent spot for those looking to meet up with friends after work and add a bit of decadence to their evening. Cicchetti takes its dedication to wine a step further than other bars by doubling as a full retail space. The wine shop

CH A R LOTTE'S BEER GA R DEN Charlotte Beer Garden breaks records with the largest draft beer selection in the world. words ELEANOR MERRELL / photos JAMEY PRICE

The largest draft beer selection in the world is now just a skip and a hop from Uptown Charlotte. After two years of construction, Charlotte Beer Garden opened earlier this year to much fanfare; lines of thirsty Charlotteans wrapped from the front door, around the corner, to the edge of the block. With over 400 beers on tap—available in 5, 10, and (ABV permitting) 16-ounce pours—and a swanky interior, Charlotte Beer Garden is indeed a site to behold. Located on South Tryon, just down the road from South End’s The Brickyard, Charlotte Beer Garden was constructed around a massive tree. Further blurring the line between indoors and outdoors, every wall on the structure’s three floors is retractable. The combined effect is that sitting in

Charlotte Beer Garden feels like perching in the middle of a massive treehouse. Bright green accents and colored lighting add some bachelor pad-esque pizzazz, while faux leather couches and armchairs deliver equal dashes of comfort and sophistication. There are two bars on the first floor. One serves exclusively North Carolina beers, and, with 190 tap handles, this section has plenty of selection. Not in the mood for a beer? Belly up to the other first floor bar for a cocktail or a glass of wine. Drink in hand, head over to the patio for a dose of vitamin D. The second floor is a sports fan’s paradise. Televisions abound, each set to whatever channel is featuring the best rivalry. Patrons can take a break from the game and step

onto the balcony, where Uptown’s skyscrapers gleam in the middle distance. The bar on this floor spotlights beers from all over the world and has over 200 tap handles, stacked four high on the tap wall. The third and final floor is a partially covered rooftop. Climb the three flights for sunshine, city views, and a small variety of lawn games. Traversing all those stairs, you’re sure to work up an appetite. Fortunately, Charlotte Beer Garden can help you there. Ask a hostess for table seating, and peruse a menu of appetizers, poutines, pizzas, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and entrees. The food is delicious and familiar; it’s exactly what you want to munch on when you’re perched on a rooftop with a beer in hand. Owner Niall Hanley first created a beer garden in Raleigh, where the majority of his bars and restaurants (under the

60 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

umbrella of Hibernian Hospitality Group) are based, before bringing the concept to Charlotte. In the first iteration of the beer garden, he worked through many of the challenges that come with operating a large beer garden, such as keeping the beers and tap lines fresh, and ordering new kegs at the ideal pace. Consequently, he was able to scale up and build Charlotte’s location even bigger than Raleigh’s. With the assistance of advanced cicerone and former team member at Charlotte’s Pilot Brewing Joshua Parrish, Hanley and his team are stepping up to help quench the seemingly insatiable beer thirst of Charlotteans. info charlottebeergarden.com @cltbeergarden

Mixologist Ron Oleksa has an uncanny knack to elevate any drink he touches—including all the classics. A pisco sour is a staple cocktail of Peruvian origin, named after its base liquor, and the cocktail term “sour,” which is a reference to using tart citrus juice with a sweetener component. Oleksa, at the Link & Pin bar’s helm, serves up this frothy, smooth cocktail with the addition of the spicy-sweetness of cognac. Blending lime juice, egg white, and Angostura bitters (which also decorate the top), the drink is memorably bright and tart, and goes down quickly. — info — linkandpin.com / @linkandpinnc

Rick Kazebee is a practicing architect and the founder of Kazebee Design. He is also a self- described “maker of things” and a part-time lecturer at UNCC. Kazebee brings a unique set of tastes, interests, and ideals to his projects, focusing intently on what drives him and defines his artistry. His experience is extensive: For two decades, Rick worked for one of the largest architectural firms in the world and ultimately became a design director. One of the last projects he led there was Asheville’s New Belgium Brewery. He’s also

responsible for his own home, Pharr Mill Brewery, and the Small Cakes upfit. Currently, Rick is in the middle of three homes, each coming soon. “It was a critical turning point because I spent four years working with craft brewers. I have always been a maker, but this exposure showed me that there was a culture of craftspeople that fit my nature. I realized I wanted to work with people who appreciated the craft including but not exclusive of craft breweries… However, pursuing well-crafted work

“A designer fundamentally looks at the world and thinks it could be better.” and relationships with other small craftspeople does not fit well with a large corporate firm.” With that, Rick left about three years ago and created Kazebee Design, where, rather than focus on a particular type of design, he looks for opportunities to make thoughtful, wellcrafted things, including commercial, residential, and even furniture. He told us a bit more about the business and his art. How did you get started in architecture, and what drives you to create? Drawing and understanding three-dimensional space has always been easy and enjoyable for me. Kris (Kazebee) is also very artistic; I think we both get it from our mothers. A designer fundamentally looks at the world and thinks it could be better. Then they are driven to make better things. Each project seems to provide its own opportunities for and definition of better. “More beautiful” is a dimension of better, but I think beauty is the consequence of thoughtfulness and craft more than it is an end in itself. For Kris and me, a day spent making something good is a good day. Who are your architectural influences? I tend to appreciate the modern masters, like Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Luis Kahn. More current architects include Brian MacKay-Lyons and Peter Zumthor. I am also inspired by simple vernacular buildings like sheds and barns. I find their clarity and authenticity reminds me that as designers we often try too hard. We focus on making something novel and exciting when sometimes an elegant construct that well provides for the needs is more poetic and more timeless.

72 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

Tell us how you come up with your design concepts. My thoughts come from a history of pragmatic middle-class culture doing as well as an intellectual culture studying. I draw on experiences of changing oil in a car or building a shed. These are amazing examples of the blue-collar ability to understand and manipulate the world we live in. I also draw on experiences from intellectual study of design and architecture having earned two degrees in architecture from Virginia Tech and from teaching architectural studios at UNCC for the past ten years. I learn with a pencil or a hammer in my hand, often both at the same time. Tell us what it’s like to design a project, engineer its construction, and then see it actualized. What does it feel like to see something go from paper to a fully realized building? Seeing something you conceived come into the world is wonderful and terrible. Managing these emotions seems to be part of maturing as an artist, but I am still working on that balance. It is wonderful to see something good come into the world and especially rewarding to see people enjoying a space. On the other hand, seeing work that you put your heart and soul into poorly constructed and the feeling of bringing ugliness into the world is troubling. That is the downside of being a passionate artist... One reason I am so passionate about craft is the hope of designing in a way that inspires and facilitates more care and craftsmanship. It seems your designs take into consideration the environment in which they will exist. How do you prepare for a project? Take us through your process.

“Seeing something you conceived come into the world is wonderful and terrible. Managing these emotions seems to be part of maturing as an artist, but I am still working on that balance. It is wonderful to see something good come into the world and especially rewarding to see people enjoying a space.” Architecture is an art of responding to a particular place, culture, and environment. I spend as much time on-site as possible. Day and night, hot and cold, rain and shine. I document the surrounding structures and context. The built context is a result of a culture, so I strive to understand that culture and its philosophies. I strive to fully understand what the client wants and unite that with what the place wants.

I think if someone can endure living with a crazy architect for a few decades, they should get an honorary degree in architecture. Beyond that, I collaborate with a lot of people, from talented engineers to draftsmen to other architects. These are like-minded people I have come across during many years of practicing in Charlotte. I find it best to build an appropriate team for a project by collaborating with other experienced small businesspeople.

What is the most challenging aspect of your work? Keeping my passions in balance; there are days when I understand why Van Gogh cut off his ear.

Do you have any designs coming to Charlotte in the future? I have plans for a line of heirloom furniture that can be sold in kits. The idea is that someone who does not have a woodshop can make something she or he can cherish. info

Is there a person or people you work alongside? I work with my wife a lot and she provides valuable feedback. Kris is not trained as an architect but has wonderful instincts.

It’s easy to love the Blue Ridge Mountain Club. Only an hour and a half drive from Charlotte, the BRMC feels instantly like you’ve just escaped on a peaceful, far-flung vacation. Just south of the bustling town of Boone, in the highlands of North Carolina, the luxury community was built atop some of the highest ridgelines in the Blue Ridge to give you panoramic views of the iconic, blue-toned, rolling mountains. Beyond the unbeatable natural setting, the first thing you’ll notice is the incredible attention to detail in the architecture of each stately home. The buildings, homes, and condos that make up BRMC are marked both by their excel-

lent use of space as well as their seamless integration with the stunning surroundings. The massive amount of land, while beautiful and well-preserved, also holds its fair share of thrills. There are over fifty miles of winding hiking trails, streams, and 50-mile views in nearly every direction. The beloved Blue Hole swimming hole is just a short hike from the property, where you can enjoy splashing around in the pristine, clear water. There are also two on-site restaurants, Lookout Grill and Jasper Club House, a sporting center, and a fitness area. Perhaps what makes BRMC so special is that it manages to perfectly blend a close-knit community with a true sense of privacy and peace.

Premier Patio Concepts is dedicated to helping all clients create unique ways to maximize their outdoor spaces year round, and this project was no different. The first thing this South Charlotte family wanted was an outdoor room that wouldn’t sacrifice natural light. They began searching for options that would allow the natural light right into their home brightening up its interior, and at the same time could offer protection from direct sun and unwanted insects. In weighing their op-

tions, the team at Premier Patio concluded the StruXure Louvered Pergola was their best choice: A patio cover that could be converted into a screened room and could open and close by the touch of button. The client also chose to incorporate a doggie door into the fixed screen design so their four-legged friends could freely access the backyard, too. In the end, the space has an “outdoor room” feel while remaining both functional and aesthetically beautiful.

T H E T R I U M PH OF SIST ER S COV E Nest Homes champions the noble art of building sustainable, family-focused communities.

I

words DENISE LORRAINE DAVIS photos METROPOLIS ICONIC SHOTS

It all started with two ambitious, entrepreneurial young men. Zeno Hawkins, CEO and Eric Woods, Chairman of Nest Homes, were buddies at UNC-Chapel Hill. Eric played college baseball, and Zeno was on the wrestling team. They’re still friends now and travel together with their wives and combined eight children aged between five and ten. When you talk with them individually, they use similar adjectives and metaphors when describing their business — as if brothers. Their passion for Nest Homes and each other is evident: “We have never argued about the business ever,” affirms Zeno. Both men underscore the importance of their respective fathers’ mentorship along the way, teaching them a hard work ethic and supporting them to follow their dreams. David Woods, Eric’s father, was their sales and development advisor later on. “We would not be where we are now without them,” explains Eric. “It was especially rewarding for us to build my parents’ empty-nester home in our first development project.” The formation of Nest Homes in 2014 combined the culmination of their growth inside the industry from different sides. They were striking their ambitions during the challenge of a recession. Eric focused on land development and the financial side of redeveloping and repositioning land in Salisbury and Mooresville. “I learned how to be fiscally conservative and leverage good business choices into purchases,” explains Eric. During this time, Zeno ventured to Greenville, SC, which was faring better in the recession. He quickly became popular in building affordable, unique urban residential architecture. “I wanted to satisfy my creativity while making a contribution to better-looking products in a cool vibe downtown market,” says Zeno. Eventually, his infill projects in historic neighborhoods earned him an invitation to serve on the urban planning board. It was exciting, but Zeno, with a young family in Charlotte, lived two lives, staying in hotels and “burning up the roads” between cities. As the Charlotte market recovered, Eric and Zeno decided to join forces and bring their talents to bear on a new collective goal. With their combined expertise, they would seek to develop sustainable communities with semi-custom homes that offered value without compromising popular design and lifestyle trends. Their brand promise: To provide a cost confidence guarantee to families and empty-nesters in planned neighborhoods in great locations designed to be inviting and intimate. They call it “nesting.”

The Folio // Blueprint

Nest Homes’ first community project was a 56-acre waterfront parcel on Sisters Cove, a land investment patiently held onto through the recession for better times ahead. Since the 1800s, this land was surrounded by over 400 acres of grazing dairy cows, farmland, and the home of the Cornelius family. Its rolling hills and mild weather were well suited to crops and cattle, and the farm flourished back when farms and markets were close to each other. Clarence and Anna Liza Cornelius founded the farm and passed it to their twins, Henry and Homer. In the early 1960s, the completion of Lake Norman touched the edges of the Cornelius family farm, forming the deep water cove. Like them, many farmers found themselves the owners of lakefront property. In 1970, the farm and family received the distinction of being recognized as a North Carolina “Century Farm Family,” which continued to be a working cattle farm headed by third-generation farmers, the now-retired judge Preston Cornelius and his wife, Marsha. The cove on their land was home to recreational campgrounds until 2011 when Nest Homes acquired the property. To this day, it remains one of the quietest and calm coves of Lake Norman.

92 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • SUMMER 2020

The farm’s red barn with its decorative quilts punctuates the community today. Out of good faith and love for the area, Nest Homes enjoys being good stewards of the civil war era farm property. They conducted an extensive reclamation project on the property and maintain the buildings, gardens, pastures, and animals alongside the family. Caring for twenty cows and a flock of chickens is integral to Nest Home’s vision for this area to flourish. When work started on Sisters Cove, Zeno and Eric were particular about how the structures would be designed and built, and who would live in them. “We turned away a lot of buyers,” says Eric. “We were picking the right people to create a genuine community.” This “right fit” philosophy is key to the success of Nest Homes. At Sisters Cove, you will not find big boats, boathouses, or McMansion architecture. “You’re not going to build a Tuscan Nest Home with us,” laughs Eric. Instead, there is a rural feel with sustainable topography. The homes have a northeastern coastal cottage look, influenced by trips to Martha’s Vineyard. The community collection focuses primarily on Neo-Classical, Shingle, and Low Country vernacular, with architectural details from Key West

and the Caribbean. They also focused on rethinking the porch element and brought it to the back facing the water, envisioning people boating to one another’s house or waving to them as they travel by. Sisters Cove is one of the few waterfront coastal lines on Lake Norman with relatively flat lots, making it even more appealing. Nest Homes’ community development approach starts with a conceptual idea based on the land itself. Nobody can call Eric Woods when he walks through a land parcel he has scouted, which could be several days. “I have to be one with the land,” explains Eric, “A process that I refer to as earth sculpture. And we try to keep as many original native hardwoods intact when possible.” Finding great land opportunities to develop for people to settle in happily is one of Eric’s innate talents he brings to the company, and Zeno jokes with pride, “And that’s why we call him the land whisperer around here!” “We like to think of ourselves as Gentlemen Builders,” muses Zeno. “We aren’t corporate-type guys. We were able to create a noble business that excites us and makes a lasting impact with our family, friends, investors, employees, vendors, and community. What could be better than that?” Indeed, Eric’s and Zeno’s genuine zeal and optimism are palpable. They enjoy getting to know generations of families and have close relationships with

many of them. “We can’t tell you how many of our homebuyers have been expectant parents, and we get to watch these kids grow in the homes we built for them!” smiles Zeno. With 98 waterfront homes now completed and only nine lots left, Sisters Cove has matured into the small, peaceful, and quiet lakeside village encircling a low traffic cove, and a finger of water, on three sides of deep water — just as once imagined. Nest Homes offers eleven additional communities now, four new ones yet-tobe-announced this summer, and exclusive luxury custom projects underway from Troutman to SouthPark. Each morning, a full complimentary breakfast is presented, and access to drinks, afternoon wine, and hors d'oeuvres in the Mansion’s lobby is offered throughout the day and into the evening. If spirits and hors d’oeuvres aren’t enough to satisfy you, the Wentworth Mansion’s restaurant, aptly named Circa 1886, will. Inspired by classic Southern dishes, Circa 1886 serves up the fresh, seasonal, bold flavors of Southern cuisine with some modern menu additions, too. Western North Carolina, with its hundreds of thousands of acres of national forests, national and state parks, and other public lands, is home to the bulk of North Carolina’s many waterfalls. The Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests comprise most of this land, and in the Brevard area of North Carolina alone, there are over 250 different falls. You can experience waterfalls you can swim in, ones you can see from the road, and others that involve a scenic hike first. These are 16 of our favorites.

Looking Glass Falls Do go chasing waterfalls in Western North Carolina’s gorgeous, cascading, 60-foot waterfall just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Brevard. Looking Glass Falls is one of the most popular and beautiful waterfalls of the state and a crowd favorite. Check it off your list whether you wish to gaze from the parking area, go in for a closer look with a short walk, take photographs or even take a dip. Mingo Falls Experience the Great Smoky Mountains on the Cherokee Indian Reservation with one of the tallest waterfalls in NC, standing at 120 feet. Free to the public and open every day, Mingo Falls is a perfect place to get away and explore for a weekend. The trek to the top is steep but quite short, making it an obtainable challenge. Hebron Rock Colony Break out your hiking shoes to see a waterfall during this 2.8 mile trail located near Blowing Rock. Hike, birdwatch or bring your dog to this North Carolina mountain destination. The spot is marked as moderate which means it’s perfect for the whole family and even has a picnic area you can enjoy. Triple Falls Immerse yourself in nature at Little River’s third distinct cascade in the DuPont State Forest nestled southeast of Brevard. Featured in the drama Last of the Mohicans, Triple Falls totals nearly 125 feet. The trail is an all-levels hike at just 2.3 miles.

Hooker Falls Hike the quick, 14-foot Hooker Falls waterfall that functions as a ledge for the Little River to flow fully into Cascade Lake further along. Sitting wide and symmetrical, Hooker Falls is the last of the series of three waterfalls at DuPont State Recreational Forest in Brevard. The falls drift into a watering hole. Crabtree Falls Carve out 1.5 or 2.5 hours for this scenic loop trail near the boundary of McDowell and Yancey counties. The hike is considered moderate to strenuous with a precipitous incline and rocky terrain. Reward yourself at the end with the views of this stunning waterfall that sprawls down over the 60-foot rock. Dry Falls Bring the family on this short but spectacular hike behind a waterfall on the Cullasaja River near Highlands, North Carolina. What makes this path so unique is that it takes visitors behind the waterfall giving them an opportunity to see its power up close and with a different perspective. Bridal Veil Falls Escape the regular day-to-day with a trip to a waterfall that sticks out as the only one in its state, North Carolina, that you can drive a car under. Located northwest of Highlands in Nantahala National Forest, this 120-foot waterfall offers an observation deck and flat rocks at the base for optimal viewing.

Over a hundred years later, her home has grown into an elegant testament to the passion she felt for the area with The Greystone Inn. The natural splendor of the Nantahala National Forest surrounds the inn's stone facade: The architecture evokes turn-of-the-century glamour that has evolved to embrace modern simplicity. Swiss mountain chalets inspire the large square windows and gray board siding with white trim. The estate was privately owned until 1985 and underwent many renovations. Its most recent improvement occurred after the property exchanged hands in 2015. The Greystone Inn closed its doors in January of that year as it underwent a multi-million-dollar restoration. It reopened in May 2018.

the end. This intermediate hike is filled with steep inclines, rocky trails, and physically taxing portions. Though difficult, the trek is lush with spruce trees and stellar views. The top of the mountain, known as Calloway Peak, is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountain range. Art Loeb Trail Named after Art Loeb, an avid mountain climber, activist, and member of the Carolina Mountain Club, this beloved 30-mile trail is perfect for a multi-day adventure. Planning on backpacking? Throughout the trail you’ll find a handful of camping sites to stop along your trek. The Art Loeb Trail traverses through four 6,000 foot mountains, all equipped with stunning views of the Appalachians. Shortoff Mountain Hike This moderate, seven mile trail along the Shortoff Mountain is packed with exceptional views of the Linville Gorge and the nearby Lake James. The hike itself is a bit rugged and at times the trail can be quite rocky and steep. Though physically challenging, the hike culminates in breaktaking, sweeping views of the waterfall lined gorge.

The spectacle that is Looking Glass Rock in Pisgah National Forest

Looking Glass Rock Hike Looking Glass Rock is a curved, natural formation of quartz that sits high above the trees in the Pisgah National Forest. Considered a Cherokee holy site, hikers can expect stunning, panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The climb itself is fairly moderate with a few challenging spots sprinkled throughout. As you reach the steep peak, you’ll find unparalleled, sweeping views of the lush mountain range Hemphill Bald Hike Located in the Great Smoky Mountains, Hemphill Bald is a charming hike atop the Cataloochee Ranch, a privately owned, environmentally protected area of land. The bald sits at 5,600 feet and is the perfect spot for a day time picnic or casual hike. For the equestrian lovers, the owners of the Cataloochee Ranch offer horseback riding trips to the top. Craggy Gardens And Pinnacle Named after the rocky, jagged crags that make up much of the trail, Craggy Gardens is a high elevation summit located along Blue Ridge Parkway. The area, though equipped with beautiful mountain-top views, is perhaps best known for

its unique floral display. Each June visitors flock to Craggy Gardens to see the beautiful pink-hued blooms of the Catawba rhododendron flowers that blanket the trails. Roan Mountain Roan Mountain is a series of five summits found throughout the Appalachian Trail in both North Carolina and Tennessee. The sprawling range is abundant with wildflowers, spruce firs, and grassy balds. But what makes this area so unique is its environmental diversity. No matter which trail you choose, you’re sure to find undisturbed nature and serenity. Tanawha Trail Get outside to visit the Tanawha Trail that stretches 13.5 miles from Julian Price Park to Beacon Heights and extends parallel to the Blue Ridge Parkway on Grandfather Mountain. The trail is unique in nature with a delicate ecosystem, range of geological and biological terrains, thickets of rhododendrons and laurel, hardwood bays, evergreen gorges, and other beautiful variations of nature. Be sure to visit the apple orchards or set up camp in the campground.

This hike can be broken into two halves; the lower section makes for an easy trek with bridges over streams and the northern section is much more difficult with a steep elevation. Little Lost Cove Cliffs Trail Break out your hiking boots and camera to see explore the northwestern side of the state at Little Lost Cove Cliffs of Pisgah National Forest. panoramic view of the canyon. With the valley approximately 2,000 feet below you and a view of the skyline of Charlotte on a clear day, this short, strenuous hike has a major payoff at the end. Whiteside Mountain Trail Challenge yourself with the steep, mighty, and difficult loop that leads to Whiteside Mountain in the Nantahala National Forest near Cashiers and Highlands. This adventure leads up to an exceptional view of the mountain’s unadulterated, 750-foot, lofty rock walls. Devil’s Courthouse Trail Relish in the sweeping view of mountains, wild flowers, and falcons for this moderate-to-strenuous, one mile climb about an hour outside of Asheville. Devil’s Courthouse also fosters an environment for a variety of rare plants that only exist in such a high altitude. Rock climbing is also a popular option here.
