No. 85 Our annual luxury issue is always a fun one to design. There's something about being able to share some of the finer things in the city and region that makes it such an enjoyable one. This 2022 edition is no different. We had such a great time seeing some posh homes, eating fine fare, visiting some truly elegant destinations, and staying at some of the more luxurious airbnbs you can find in the Carolinas. Some of our favorite experiences were food related. We visited the new South End restaurant PARA and were truly impressed with the beauty and color of the dishes on the menu. We sipped some delicious cocktails at Sister in Plaza Midwood, sampled a classic at Park Road's Osteria Luca, tasted bone marrow at VANA, and mouth-watering octopus at Myers Park's The Jimmy. We also shared some of our favorite fine dining experiences of 2022. In the home and design realm, we got a chance to talk to Danielle Knox of Danielle Knox Interiors and step into a gorgeous newly finished project. We also tour three spaces from Alexis Pawling, Dominique Delaney, and Gerrard Builders that we think you'll really love. We traveled to The Sandhills to explore the area made famous by golf, but we share what we love beyond the links about Southern Pines and Pinehurst. We also stayed in two of the nicest bnbs in North Carolina, a manor nestled on 100 acres in Elkin and a Blowing Rock masterpiece with the most-enviable views. Aside from all of this luxe, we see the art of talented artist Greg Barnes, visit The Galleries At 811, get excited for a new show at Jerald Melberg, and more! Enjoy and we'll see you in early July for our next issue. Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Art Director Brett Barter, Publisher

Charlotte-based artist Greg Barnes has pursued art in his life in many ways, oscillating between the studio and taking his work on the road, creating works and teaching workshops. Barnes graduated from Wake Forest University with a Bachelors in Fine Art before moving on to jobs in fields like technical illustration, printing, computer graphics, and multimedia programming. Today, he travels the country to sell his art at fine art festivals, teach pastel workshops, and participate in plein air (outdoor painting) events. Barnes’ art is a combination of impressionism and realism, often focused on landscapes. His is a style of working he describes as “quick and loose” done primarily with soft pastels in an attempt to capture a fleeting moment in nature. Barnes shared more with us about his process and what led him to where he is today. What inspired you to foray into the art world? Art class was always my favorite while in elementary and high school. When it came time to declare a major in college, I chose fine art. In 2002, 15 years after graduating college, I made the choice to pursue a career as a fine artist. How did your minor in Biology impact your artwork? Another favorite subject in my early years was biology; I loved nature and the study of all things living. I used to spend hours in the woods just exploring and searching for different creatures and plants. These experiences created a strong link
28 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
to the plein air aspect of my painting habits. My favorite thing is to be outside capturing the beauty of nature. What is your process, from start to finish, like? My process has gotten refined over the past several years. For the first 5-10 years, I would paint almost every day. Combined with the painting, I would study works of artists I admired, always asking myself why I liked their work. With all that information percolating inside me, it became easier and easier to produce work that I was happy with. My actual process begins with a quick pencil sketch to locate the main shapes and composition. I quickly dive in by finding the darkest shapes, creating a silhouette of the scene. Other values and colors are blocked in before smudging the first layer with a paper towel to consolidate all the shapes. From there, I continue to work around the main areas, slowly adding details where I want the eye to move. Typically I will sign the piece when it “feels” like it’s getting close to a finish. I’ve found that it’s always better to stop sooner than later to avoid overworking the piece. How did your jobs in tech illustration and the like prepare you for your current career? Those early jobs out of college helped me mostly with the administration part of being an artist. I got proficient at several graphics programs like Photoshop, which I now use to scan and document all my original paintings. From there, I’m able to produce high quality prints and marketing materials for my business.

Tell us about the traveling side of your work. Traveling and seeing new places has always been high on my list of loves. Being able to pair that love of travel with my art career was a dream come true. Once I began painting outdoors, I couldn’t get enough of the variety that traveling provides. Different landscapes provide different challenges, and being able to study those varying subjects through plein air painting has only strengthened my abilities in recreating them. info barnesstudios.com @gbarnesstudios

Galleries at 811 brings a medley of art and community collaboration to Providence Road. words SUNNY HUBLER
Galleries at 811 has contributed in a unique way to the arts scene in Charlotte: The space expands upon the typical “gallery” to bring fine art, high-end fashion, and provide a place where area creatives can explore ideas and share them with the broader community. Once inside the Providence Road gallery, operated by owner and founder Caren Wingate and Gallery Director Meghan Cummins, you’ll find a collection of local and regional art plus a variety of types of art for sale, from wall art to curated furnishings and beautiful glass and porcelain sculpture. The space is a dedicated community hub, with monthly shows for featured artists,

opportunities for guests to meet and interact with the artists, and chances for collaboration. “We are very open-minded and open to suggestions from our artists and our neighborhood,” Meghan says. “We invite ideas, and wanted to combine Charlotte’s gracious spirit of hospitality with a beautiful and relaxing environment where art and fashion meet. We [also] do not require exclusive representation, which allows artists to show their work in more than one location.” The Galleries at 811’s team also works closely to coordinate events and installations with their building mate, the custom frame shop Coffey & Thompson.
CULTURE What does your gallery offer other than art pieces? Rosie’s Coffee, Tea and Wine Shop welcomes visitors to the building. Guests can browse jewelry and gifts as well as couture fashion and custom clothing by Luis Machicao. Julie B Shades offers a wonderful contemporary twist on acrylic lamp shades, while Lady B. Good offers custom lamps and fabric shades. How did you create a cohesive gallery that complements the art pieces with the gallery? We’re very collaborative with our artists. We have quarterly meetings together, in which we discuss the goals for the building and ideas for achieving them. There is a wealth of creativity in those meetings, and making guests happy is our mission. How would you describe the ambiance of Galleries at 811? The atmosphere at 811 is very relaxed and eclectic. Our goal is to make guests feel

welcome and free to enjoy our offerings at their own pace, hopefully with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. How do you find the talented local artists you display? We, as individuals, are privileged to share friendships with many creatives in Charlotte. When we were programming the building, we reached out to artists we knew and word traveled through them. We’re now being contacted by artists from all over the country, but local and regional artists have priority with us. We also have a heart for young artists, so guests can expect to see new work from up-and-comers. In what ways has Galleries at 811 been able to bring people together? We host a variety of events at 811. The first meeting of the 811 Arts & Culture Society was held the first Tuesday in March. Our speaker was Michael Gallis and he discussed the differences between Chinese and Western Art. Attendees bring their lunch, buy a beverage from Rosie’s and engage in a salon lecture and discussion. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month. Our April subject is Art of the Coral Reef and Grazia Walker is our speaker. We have a full roster of events planned for the building, with the details on our website. The space is also available for private events. info galleries811.com / @galleriesat811clt

W H ER E M I N D M EETS BODY Tiffany Mielnik Parrish’s crystal clear vision comes to life with The Spa at Selenite. words SUNNY HUBLER
In 2020, Tiffany Mielnik Parrish opened Selenite Beauty in the heart of bustling, historic South End. Her mission was always to create a beautiful, inviting space focused on educating and uplifting customers about beauty and wellness. Selenite Beauty rapidly became a destination providing safe, effective alternatives to the harsh products on most store shelves. In 2022, Tiffany unveiled the missing piece, and officially opened The Spa at Selenite in the upstairs of her Camden Road beauty boutique. It’s a cozy, modern-meets-vintage escape from the busy South End streets, and the experience is truly that of holistic wellness. In perfect keeping with the name, The Spa will embody all that the selenite crystal is said to: healing, peace and calm, mental clarity, and well-being.

You can visit The Spa for guided meditation or a facial, sound healing, one-on-one yoga or a lash lift. Tiffany herself will continue to manage day-to-day operations of the retail store, e-commerce, and the spa. Black Dove Interiors helped create Tiffany’s airy, luxe vision, while Fine Grit crafted custom cabinets and a modern built-in sofa. Expect an earthy ambiance with Parisian-inspired tile, Spanish-inspired niche walls, modern rounded columns, vintage artifacts, and limewash paint. “Sometimes professional high-grade treatment spaces can feel cold, intimidating, and uncomfortable,” Tiffany explains. “We've created The Spa at Selenite to be luxurious and relaxing while still providing results-driven services… it’s the perfect balance between holistic relaxation and professional-grade treatments.”

“We've created The Spa at Selenite to be luxurious and relaxing while still providing results-driven services.”
Indeed, Selenite is not your average spa experience. While you’ll find aesthetic services like waxing, sugaring, and brow and lash treatments, the primary focus is on high-touch, customized facials, including a buccal massage facial (a hard to find internal deep tissue face massage technique targeting the jaw and lymph), oxygen facials, and microcurrent. In addition to aesthetic services, Tiffany’s team will also offer wellness services like one-on-one or two-on-one guided meditations, reiki, guided yoga sessions, and massage therapy. The wellness room is available to book on its own for anyone looking for a quiet escape to practice or simply unwind. “Opening a spa has always been on the roadmap for Selenite since the very beginning,” Tiffany says. “We knew we wanted to bring our community immersive experiences ranging from educational classes to full aesthetic services. The spa was a natural next step that allows us to bring our customers personalized skincare and wellness experiences for the mind and body.” The Spa at Selenite is an extension of the downstairs retail space, so the same ingredient screening process applies to the products Tiffany’s service providers rely on. Facials are at the heart of The Spa, and Tiffany explains that consistent facials are an excellent way to deeply treat the skin. The holistic estheticians are on hand to help clients establish a routine that will work long-term, while considering various lifestyle factors, like stress or lack of sleep. “We wanted to bring a unique point of view and aesthetic to Charlotte,” Tiffany says. “It's so easy to get wrapped up in hustle culture, especially in our society that rewards overworking. We want to provide people with a place where they can rest, relax, and reduce stress to help them be a better version of themself when they leave our spa. All in all, we want to make a healthy and balanced lifestyle more attainable for the members of our community.” The Spa at Selenite will offer options for monthly membership that include a discounted monthly facial and 10% off additional services and products at Selenite Beauty. The wellness room is available to book for anyone who is looking for a quiet place to hit pause and reflect, and intimate, 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 yoga/meditation sessions are options for beginners just scratching the surface or for seasoned meditators looking to dive deeper into the practice. info selenitebeauty.com / @thespaatselenite

A LESSON IN STYLE AND GRACE
Whitney Douglas brings her eye for fashion and stylish sensibilities to Charlotte and beyond. words SUNNY HUBLER
Whitney Douglas knows a thing or two about fashion. The owner of Wardrobe With Whitney has built her extensive experience across the board: A graduate of Bauder College with a BA focus on Fashion Merchandising & Marketing, she was also part of the historic team at Lord & Taylor Fifth Avenue’s flagship as a visual and window stylist and worked six seasons of New York Fashion Week with Harlem's Fashion Row as an assistant production manager. Originally from Columbia, SC, Whitney has spent her time between the cities of Charlotte, Atlanta and New York over the last 15 years. Now, with Wardrobe With Whitney, she helms an image consulting boutique out of Charlotte, offering styling services, closet cleanups, and more. Whitney answered our questions about what got her interested in fashion, what running a business is like, and more.

Tell us about what you did before you became a stylist, and how you made the decision to start your own business? I initially began my quest in the industry via runway modeling. I later became a runway coach to aspiring young girls at age 17 before leaving for college in Atlanta. I've always wanted to be a "fashion consultant." I had business cards at age 16 with that title [laughs]. At a young age, I wasn't sure what it looked like, but I wanted that life. I made the decision to start my own business after years of learning and assisting some of the greats in the industry. Being your own boss is always challenging, but I personally thrive being challenged. What is your day-to-day work like? My day-to-day life can look different depending on the week.

“Being your own boss is always challenging, but I personally thrive being challenged.”
I treat Mondays as a logistics/PR day to handle all business communications for the week and plan for client and designer reach out. If I'm working a gig, shopping and return days and travel are included. I also like to visit local boutiques and consignment shops weekly to hunt for second hand picks for future concepts. Describe the various services you provide, and who your clients are. My service menu consists of wardrobe and virtual styling, brand styling, closet cleanse, and wardrobe coaching. My clients are all kinds of adults and kids. Professionals, executives, and entrepreneurs who seek to command rooms, establish a presence, build confidence, and have clarity in their lifestyle. Was it always a dream of yours to pursue a career that incorporated fashion? My admiration for fashion and presentation began watching my mother dress to impress daily and witnessing her work. I learned how to present things with taste through interior design and wardrobe. Yes, it has always been a dream of mine to pursue a creative career path as early as I can remember. What inspires you? How do you find new ideas? I am inspired by everything. I always say inspiration is all around us. I'm inspired by colors, shapes, architecture, street style, creative conversation, movies, television, magazines, content creators, the weather, you name it. It's through life that I'm able to conceptualize an idea. The theme, the mood, the story to tell.
a "trend" my own, but I typically do my own thing. However, for my clients it's important for me to keep up with current trends. Right now, sustainability is in. You're seeing more people explore great finds from second hand and consignment favorites like The Real Real, ThreadUP, or even Rent The Runway. I think more people are being conscious of what they invest into and consume. Who are some of your favorite Southern tastemakers? My all-time favorite Southern tastemaker is absolutely, now the late and great, Andre Leon Talley who is North Carolina's own. He single-handedly proved in his lifetime that The South has something to say in fashion. I am still getting to know the best of the best that Charlotte has to offer since leaving New York but I'm a big fan of businesses in the South End area. Are there any upcoming projects or events for you we should let people know about? I am very excited about the advancement of my Wardrobe Workshop series. Wardrobe Workshop is focused on creating tailored transitions into the workplace and everyday lifestyle. The focus is to demonstrate the positives and negatives of wardrobe presentation; I demonstrate how the way we dress ultimately determines how we will be addressed. I'm excited to kick off this year's series speaking with the students of Clemson University at their Cooperative Extension Leadership Roundup next month.

The Queen City must welcome another powerhouse of restaurant industry professionals who have decided to band together as Charlotte’s newest hospitality group. Chet Desai, Jigs Desai, Dave Feimster, and Ricky Patel joined forces under the umbrella of Parliament Hospitality Group LLC. In January, this team of restaurant industry veterans launched their first venture, called PARA, which is already making a splash in trendy South End. “PARA” is short for “imparable” which means unstoppable; “PARA” also means ‘for,’ as in “for Charlotte” — we

hope you feel both energies when you dine or imbibe with us,” says Desai. Executive Chef Alex Verica heads the kitchen. Verica is homegrown talent: He spent the bulk of his youth in Charlotte, graduating from Ardrey Kell before entering the restaurant business as a dishwasher. He has since cooked alongside Chef David Quintana at Dot Dot Dot and, of course, his well-known father, Paul Verica, at Heritage and The Stanley. The menu Verica has helped put together blends global cuisine with Southern twists and local ingredients. A few

of our favorites highlights include: deviled eggs with miso, shrimp, trout roe, and scallion; lobster toast with milk bread, chive aioli, caviar, and radish; and tuna crudo with jalapeño, lime, avocado, citrus, hot pepper, and radish. The culinary team is also working on late night and dessert menus to satisfy the sweet tooths and night owls of Charlotte. Dishes are served family style, which creates an opportunity for diners to experience more tastes, and to enjoy more communal culinary experiences with their dinner company. cocktail menu. Signature mixed drinks include Berry Nice with Grey Goose Strawberry & Lemongrass Essence (lemon, lemongrass, Topo Chico, and Strawberry St. Germain Foam); and Mez Me With That with Illegal Mezcal, orange, lime, cilantro oil, and Togarashi. Expect a varied menu featuring drinks that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are tasty. Mejia works her magic from a full bar that seats 12. Handsome leather seating and subdued lighting round out a cozy yet modern aesthetic that can accommodate up to 55 people. Outside, swanky seating offers easy access to viewing local artist Daniel Moates’ PARA-inspired mural.

Originally opened in early summer of 2021, The Jimmy is the sixth Charlotte restaurant spearheaded by Noble Food & Pursuits, and The Jimmy is the group’s first step into the realm of Italian-meets-French cuisine. Their same honoring of locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible remains a throughline here.
For a lovely, light starter or a shareable, try the grilled octopus with marinated butter beans. Butter beans, or lima beans, are often traditionally served with seafood dishes like ceviche, so the coupling of the creamy, mild dish alongside the smoky, snappy grilled octopus makes perfectly palatable sense.

At VANA, the dinner menu is divided into four primary sections: woods, sea, pasture, and farm. All dishes effuse the team’s signature flavor produced by cooking relatively simple, locally-sourced ingredients over a wood-burning fire. If you’re looking to expand your culinary boundaries, try the rich, decadent bone marrow off the menu.
The dish comes topped with an onion marmalade and served alongside sourdough for spreading; the acid of the sourdough and bite of onion perfectly offset the buttery, semi-sweet flavor of the marrow. Never had bone marrow and unsure what to expect? It’s a bit like foie gras, and as always with adventurous fare, you’re in good hands with Chef Noll’s cooking teams.

Ken a nd Tricia M a rtino’s restaur a nt, Osteria LuCa in the Park Road Shopping Center, is a stylish but still family-friendly spot. While the star attraction may be the woodfired pizzas and proteins selection, we’ve been longtime fans of the team behind the bar who know just how to perfectly pair the right flavors and level of booziness alongside the many seasonally-driven dishes. This one is a classic order for cocktail enthusiasts: The Manhattan comes traditional style with a rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, a dash of bitters, and a cherry garnish. The warming sweetness of this drink is typically said to taste best alongside a red meat like lamb or steak, but we think it’s pretty darn good with a fresh slice, too. — info — osterialuca.com / @osterialucaclt

Charlotte, NC native Kel Minton is no stranger to experimentation when it comes to drinks. A renowned mixologist in the city, he’s known for not only his respect of the classics, but also for innovating with rarer liquors and new seasonal flavors. His riff on a Last Word cocktail is no exception. This beautiful custom drink features Crème de Violette, a violetflavored crème liqueur that gives the texture of cream without actually including any dairy. This flowery liqueur marries well with the cocktails addition of rosewater, all of which is grounded with high-quality gin. HOME & DESIGN
D
Danielle Knox is a talented Charlotte-area interior designer who specializes in residential spaces. From her headquarters in Davidson, NC, Knox has built a booming business. Even as she looks forward to the expansion of her firm, she took a moment to reflect back with us on how she arrived at this season of success. What first got you interested in or passionate about interiors and design? I have been passionate about interiors and design since I was a child. I was frequently rearranging furniture and bookshelves in my room. I also had an aunt who was an architectural interior designer; she had a positive influence on me from an early age. Tell us about the decision to begin your own firm. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, having previously owned a business. I also feel that starting my own firm, as opposed to working under another designer, has given me the freedom to express my own design intellectual property.
66 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
How would you describe your own style/aesthetic? I have such a diverse style and aesthetic. I truly believe that is what makes me a great designer; having the ability to transform from cozy and airy to stately and elegant to dark and moody is what keeps it all interesting to me. What are some of the most rewarding parts of running the business, and some of the most challenging? The most rewarding part of running my own interior design firm is offering my clients design options and elements across a varied spectrum, devoid of any limitations associated with working for a larger company. The highest level of gratification for me comes from the look on my client’s faces when their space is transformed beyond what they could have ever imagined. One of the greater challenges to owning my own firm is stepping just far enough outside of the box to open a client’s mind to ideas they could not come up with on their own. Though it is a challenge, it is also one of the most invigorating aspects for me. This is precisely why people choose to work with a designer in the first place.

HOME & DESIGN What or who do you look to for inspiration when doing a design job? I seek inspiration from so many sources, including design books, magazines, digital media and architecture. I am always looking at the elements of something that bring it together as a whole, breaking them apart, and thinking of ways to use them in a different and unique part of a design. Is there anything you are working on now or as a goal for 2022? Drawing on my creativity and passion for interior design, I would like to push the envelope even further in 2022 by encouraging my clients to think outside of the box. It is easy to play it safe and work within a client’s comfort zone, but when we encourage them to think “boldly,” or “outside of the box,” better designs evolve. info danielleknoxinteriors.com @danielleknoxinteriors

Coming from a house that was dark and had very little common space, it was easy for Alexis Pawling to know what she didn’t want in her next home. And, as a professional interior designer, she had even more vision than most. Instead of the low ceilings and sharply segmented rooms, Pawling wanted a space that was airy and bright—and a space that had enough room to comfortably suit her growing family. Those desires are what led her to emphasize
crisp white throughout her whole kitchen and dining area. The long floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to permeate the space, while the gold lighting fixtures add a pop of color to the room. With the large marble island serving as the room’s center point, the kitchen boasts more than enough space to both entertain and cook. It’s a stunning redesign that exemplifies the power of changing our living spaces to change our lives.

DESIGN ED FOR L A K E L I V I NG words LIZA CARRASQUILLO / photo L AUR A SUMR AK
Living facing Lake Norman means living in full view of stunning sunrises above a shimmering waterfront. This classy kitchen was renovated to take full advantage of that view. Interior designer Dominique Delaney, whose business is based in Cornelius, knew that the best way to truly make the kitchen feel like the heart of the home was to work with the abundant sunlight naturally washing through the windows each day. To achieve that goal, she installed a large window above
the sink and decided the ceiling needed to be raised to ten feet tall. With the room’s new light hardwood floors and white cabinets, the sunlight can imbue the kitchen in a way that makes it all look much more spacious and airy than it could previously. The dark, reclaimed wood used on the kitchen island grounds the space with a touch of contrast, while the thoughtful lighting adds a nautical nod to the waterfront lot the owners love so much.

Home builder Bryan Gerrard knows how to create a beautiful space better than most anyone. Here, in the final iteration completed with residential design from Christopher Phelps, you’ll find a balance between the use of light wood features and clean color palettes. The combination created a space that feels both rustic and elegant. With the white oak floors as the room’s foundation, the palette is woven together with a
light beige color that’s applied in a variety of textures. The smooth furniture from Hickory Chair and Taylor King contrast well against the textured style of rug from STARK Carpet, while the stone fireplace surround gives the whole space an elegant focal point. The exposed wood beams sit nicely against the white shiplap ceiling to bring it all together and make the room feel as homey and inviting as it is simply beautiful.

Every season, you can find good reason to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains. Fall foliage attracts visitors during the autumn months, picturesque holiday traditions and cozy lodges bring winter travelers, spring temperatures beckon to hikers, and summertime in the Blue Ridge offers North and South Carolinians a respite from the blistering heat of the Piedmont and Lowcountry. No matter when you go, consider treating yourself to a luxurious stay at the Blowing Rock Wow House, a 6800 square foot villa in the Blowing Rock area of North Carolina. Surrounded by sweeping views of Wilson Creek Valley and Linville Gorge, you would hardly believe the drive to Blowing Rock’s Main Street is a mere seven minutes. Although, you might more readily accept that access to the Blue Ridge Parkway is only five minutes away.

It's likely you've never seen anything quite like this as a rental. The perfectly perched property offers five bedrooms with three on-suite primary bedrooms, and a kids bunk room with five full baths. Light touches of wood paneling and stonework evoke the ambience of a mountain home, but high ceilings and an open floor plan result in an airy, modern space reminiscent of upscale Aspen homes that have inspired the architectural AspenModern movement. On the first floor, the kitchen area flows seamlessly into the dining area and two indoor living areas. Tall and frequent doors and windows keep the outdoors ever-present and provide easy access to the home’s epic porch, below which a twostory pool with an infinity edge angles toward rolling hills and valleys. Additional amenities include a laundry room, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and a private sauna room.
This luxury rental home is owned by husbandwife team Cameron and Sheila Cane who, after launching the highly successful Deutsche Beverage Technology, turned their attention toward building a portfolio of exclusive rental properties. The Blowing Rock Wow House in particular has been a labor of love in more than one way; it took four years for the rental to evolve from concept to product. Battling against the 2020 mountain construction boom and COVID-induced supply shortages, the Cane family encountered no deficit of hurdles. Nevertheless, they have created a one-of-akind offering that is certain to make your next mountain getaway one for the ages. Whether you spend your time playing cornhole on the porch, lounging in the pool, drinking in the sunrise from your bedroom, shopping the businesses of Blowing Rock, or exploring the outdoor wonderland that is the Blue Ridge, you’ll be doing so in the lap of luxury at the Blowing Rock Wow House. Moore County, on the eastern edge of the Piedmont, is legendary for the Pinehurst Golf Resort, which is considered “the cradle of American golf.” Its spot in the limelight is well-earned; it has, after all, hosted multiple U.S. Open Championships and is the site of more golf championships than any other course in America. But Moore County and the quaint towns of Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen have much to offer beyond the fairway. Founder James Walker Tufts founded the Village of Pinehurst with the goal of emulating the quaint villages of New England, and the area’s early charm has only grown through the decades. From shopping to sipping on local craft brews, there’s no shortage of ways to pass an enjoyable weekend in Moore County. Play — The Sandhills attract not only avid golfers, but also equestrians. Buffeted by an avid local horseback riding community, visiting equestrians are drawn to the area’s soft ground and copious horse trails. Facilities like the Pinehurst Harness Track (named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992), Walthour-Moss Foundation, and Carolina Horse Park host championships,

events, and clubs that have put the area on the map as one of the Southeast’s premier equestrian destinations. If you’re feeling more cerebral, get inspired at Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities, which has been a destination for writers, artists, and freethinkers for over 100 years. The Center hosts a robust calendar of programs and events throughout the year. Even if your visit to Moore County doesn’t overlap with an event, the Weymouth Center is still a worthwhile destination for its 26 acres of beautifully manicured gardens and grounds, historic Boyd House and the NC Literary Hall of Fame within, and lingering creative energies of literary giants like William Faulkner and Thomas Wolfe. Nearby, Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve is full of several short, easy trails. The longleaf pine forest also hosts regular free events for children and adults. Another unique way to explore Moore County is by partaking in the Carriage Tours of Pinehurst Village. Take in the historic homes of Pinehurst while being guided by a horse-drawn carriage. These carriages are perfect for families as they can comfortably seat up to four. The designer of NYC’s Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted, was also behind the Village of Pinehurst. His firm

was hired by Tufts and he designed it to “mirror a New Englandstyle village,” with walkable pathways and alleys. If you want to arrive without an agenda, simply strolling the historic homes and ancient trees provides compelling scenery. The Village also has its fair share of great shopping and dining for its many visitors. Southern Pines also has a charming downtown shopping area. Be sure to stop into The Country Bookshop for your next great read and One Eleven Main for homegoods and gifts. You can catch a movie or live performance at the historic Sunrise Theater in the heart of downtown. Stretch your legs along the trails at Reservoir Park, and the Sandhills Horticulture Gardens, or head over for a nice outing at the greenspace at the Campbell House. You can even bring your golf balls and chip on their free practice area. Finally, in Aberdeen, there’s plenty of opportunity to get waterside. Ray’s Mill Park provides a T-shaped pier overlooking a 14-acre pond, plus an outdoor nature center, a picnic shelter, and a walking trail dotted with benches. Aberdeen Lake Park allows for all the boating (non-motorized), fishing, and outdoor enjoyment you could want. History — Moore County is full of historic gems that are well worth weaving into your travels. In Southern Pines, the Historic Shaw House is a preserved piece of history from Charles C. Shaw, a first-generation Scottish settler, who built the house around 1820. One of his 12 children, Charles Washington Shaw, became the first mayor of Southern Pines in 1887, and the house remained in the family until it was acquired in 1946 by Moore County Historical Association. Located on its original foundation, The Shaw House is a classic antebellum home, built in the style of the other cabins that were typical of early Sandhills settlers. A wing was added to the house in the mid-1800s and a kitchen was added in the 1920s. McLendon Cabin, the oldest house in Moore County on its original location, and The Bryant House are also both open to the public and preserved by Moore County Historical Association. Both are located on the same property, near the Harris Crossroads west of Carthage, NC. Malcolm Blue Farm is another great option for history buffs. Built during the second part of the nineteenth century by Malcolm McMillan Blue, also a Scottish settler, the land now houses a collection of early twentieth century outbuildings and functions as a living history farm and museum. It provides an “educational and historical focal point” for the community to see what life was like in the Sandhills of the 1800s.

Eat and Drink — You can spend an entire day touring the area’s breweries; you’ll discover an ever-growing selection here, like in the Queen City. Perhaps the best way to explore the beers of The Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen area is with the Sandhills Pour Tour Passport. It’s a clever way to be guided around Moore County, with a beverage as your reward. You can simply ask for a Passport at any of the Pour Tour locations, collect all seven stamps at each spot (like Pinehurst Brewing Co., Hatchet Brewing Company, Southern Pines Brewing Company, and Railhouse Brewery), and then bring your fully stamped Passport in for a free Sandhills Pour Tour mug. One of our favorite places to grab a bite and people watch is at Red’s Corner. The food truck park and 12-tap beer garden is located on two acres on the edge of downtown Southern Pines. The venue regularly hosts events, from live music to yoga. Some of the trucks are permanent features at Red’s, and others rotate or come by on occasion as guests. Beer, wine, and kombucha are available on tap as well. With so many visitors passing through the area, there’s a high demand for eating out, and the area has responded to the demand with a decent selection of tasty dining destinations. If you’d rather find a sit-down spot, head on over to 1895 Grille, Elliotts on Linden, or Ironwood Cafe in Pinehurst. In Southern Pines, a few of our favorites include Sweet Basil for lunch, and Vito's, Southern Prime Steakhouse, and Sly Fox Pub for dinner. Over in Aberdeen, which also features a very charming, small

downtown, there are several options for local fare. Grab a beer at the proudly veteran-owned Railhouse Brewery, or a bite at Mason’s Restaurant & Grocery, where you can find many local and regional specialty products. In the morning, catch a buzz at local coffee shop High Octane. Want dessert? Located in downtown Southern Pines, The Ice Cream Parlor Restaurant has been a staple since the 1970s. Or, pop in to the Ryder Cup Lounge at Pinehurst Resort for a true area classic: their famous Mile-High Key Lime Pie, an Instagram-worthy dish served with raspberry coulis, vanilla chantilly, candied macadamia nuts and seasonal fruit. Rest — However you choose to fill your day(s) in Moore County, plan to rest in comfort. Established in 1913, the Pine Crest Inn is chock full of history. It has hosted golf legends like Bobby Jones, Annie Oakley, Arnold Palmer, and Ben Crenshaw, who were no doubt drawn to the inn’s central location, historic exterior, and charming staff. The Pine Crest Inn offers breakfast and dinner daily, as well as a pub known as Mr. B’s, which always hosts a blend of locals and guests within its cozy interior. Other lodging options include Duncraig Manor and Gardens, which features English Tudor style exterior architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as Jefferson Inn, a top-rated luxury inn in the heart of Southern Pines. In Pinehurst Village, you’ll find three luxurious options at Pinehurst Resort: The Manor, The Holly, and the Carolina.

Romance, world-class cuisine, rich history, fine art, singular shopping… there’s no shortage of reasons to visit Charleston and no shortage of visitors. A robust market of hotels, inns, and B&Bs competes for the opportunity to host these travelers, engendering accommodations as luxurious and varied as the city itself. The Saint Hotel, which opened during 2020, is a perfect example not only of the resiliency of the Charleston travel industry, but also of its eagerness to live up to its reputation. The house itself is large and beautifully designed, boasting four bedrooms, six bathrooms, a kitchen, laundry room, workout room, and a gameroom. Good food comes in a lot of forms, and some of the best I’ve had comes with no frills. But there’s no denying that a true fine-dining experience is unparalleled in the experience you get from start to finish. It’s found in the attention to detail on all fronts, from the flatware to the service, the time spent on each course and the creativity in the kitchen. The next time you have a special occasion to celebrate, or simply want to partake in the joy of breaking bread in style, try—or return to—one of these local gems for yourself.

peppers, Benton’s bacon marmalade, and wood grilled flatbread—within its historic walls. Make sure to check out one of their special wine pairing events. O-Ku O-Ku’s sophisticated menu and chic atmosphere is perfect for enjoying their sushi, chef-driven dishes, sake, and craft cocktails. With Southern-leaning flavors, O-Ku provides the freshest fish from the world’s finest producers and markets.
