Message from the Executive Director Yesterday I walked into my childhood nightmare come to life; in a theatre. As it did not involve a production, I toughed it out as long as I could, and chuckled at myself on the metro ride home. This is the exciting part about theatre; no pause button, no rewind, a place where we confront ourselves. Theatre is not exact, it is alive. Like all things in Montreal, Theatre transforms from spring into summer, as the warmth of the sun brings different possibilities. Along with excellent traditional offerings, and fan favorites like Shakespeare in the Park, the taps open on the 25th edition of the Montreal FRINGE Festival, and ELAN helps to spread the celebration of art, including Theatre across the province with Arts Alive Quebec! We hope as always, that our summer edition of the QDF Theatre calendar, will help get you into the sun, as well as, into some cool Theatre.

FESTIVALS
Montreal Infringement Festival June 17 – 21
Infringement is Montreal’s Do-It-Yourself arts festival.
Based on the Edinburgh Fringe of 1947, independent and activist artists challenge the corporate takeover of culture! Infringement est le festival d’art de bricolage deMontreal. Dans ce festival, inspiré par le Festival Fringed’Endinburgh de 1947, les artistes et activistes détournent le rôle des entreprises dans la culture.
Help organize the Montreal infringement festival! The Montreal infringement festival would not exist without a core of volunteer collaborators who meet throughout the year to help organize the festival. Collaborators organize everything from promotion, artist recruitment and event-planning to venue-booking, media relations and festival production. “Bring what you would hope to find” is a popular infringement motto.Collaborators are often artists, activists and culture-lovers and we meet usually around twice a month at L’Escalier, a cultural cafe beside BerriUQAM metro (552 St. Catherine Est). It’s a great way to meet new people, empower artists and to be part of a community event that challenges the corporate takeover of culture.
Here are some examples of things you can do as a collaborator :
1) Be in charge of a day and curate some acts. 2) Book and be in charge of a venue. 3) Invite a critical artist to play and be in charge of helping them. 4) Be a music co-ordinator and book bands. 5) Hold a fundraiser. 6) Create an event or a show. 7) Help other organizers with media, billeting, creating images, etc. 8) Support infringers year-round by attending their events. 9)
Help establish new infringement festivals in other places.

SPOTLIGHT on FRINGE
Interview with
Amy Blackmore The St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival is revving up for its 25th year. We sat down with Festival Director Amy Blackmore to talk about what the Fringe means to the cultural landscape of our fair city and how exactly she gets this mammoth of a festival organized every year. What brought you to the fringe in the first place? I was immediately attracted to the friendly nature of the festival. The idea of all-inclusiveness means a lot to me. That’s the first thing I noticed when I walked into the beer tent at the age of 17. People actually cared about my opinion for once and I was invited to be a part of something! What is unique about the Montreal Fringe. How would you describe its vibe? Montreal is one of the most vibrant cities in Canada. Our festival stands out among the rest because it’s a true reflection of the rich culture of the city. Most Fringe festivals are theatre-focused, however, in Montreal, we have a growing reputation of being a multidisciplinary arts festival. We have theatre primarily, with strong dance, comedy and storytelling components. And now we also have a film festival, visual art expo and magic shows! And one can’t ignore the unique bilingual and growing multilingual aspects of our Fringe too! But above all, Montreal is the Fringe that kicks off the Canadian Summer Fringe Circut tour - otherwise known as the Party Fringe! It is Montreal, after all.
QDF Summer 2015 calender.indd 12
15-05-14 8:58 PM
13 The Fringe seems to be special to a lot of people, it feels like a celebration of summer. What do you think keeps people excited? What is its purpose, in your opinion? Fringe Buzz really gets people excited. At the Fringe, word of mouth is king and the Fringe Buzz is queen. Fringers love sharing their opinions about theatre, performance, art and life. We love to encourage the dialogue among patrons, artists, media, staff and volunteers through our Fringe Buzz. There are many different ways to participate. Tweet a review using #fringebuzz, go to our app, comment on our website, fill out a form or simply strike up a conversation at the beer tent. What are some of the biggest acts to get their start at the Montreal Fringe? The festival a part of a rich artistic community in Montreal, so it’s hard to take credit for starting someone’s career. Although, we do have a ton of proud alumni who have thanked us for helping nurture their careers at various levels and stages. Simon Boulerice, Holly Gauthier-Frankel, Johanna Nutter, Sophie Cadieux, Dance Animal, Uncalled For, Dave-St-Pierre, Aszure Barton & Artists, Paul Cargnello, K’Naan and Stephen Colbert! What is a day in the life of organizing the Fringe like? As we go to print with the QDF calendar, you are in a really busy time. Is it chaos? Is it organized chaos? Is it madness or clam before the storm. What is it like to be at the helm of this ship? Spring is my favourite time in the FRINGE calendar. The grant writing hump is temporarily over and we say goodbye to the planning phases of the festival. There’s nothing worse than planning a summer festival when there is snow on the ground. Is it chaos at the MainLine offices? I’d like to think no - but it’s certainly busy. Those last few weeks leading up to the program getting printed, the poster being designed and the app getting layed out are quite intense. Thankfully, we have an amazing team and the support of the community. If it weren’t for our giant crew of amazing volunteers, we wouldn’t get any of it done. What would you say is the best way for someone to enjoy the Fringe if they’ve never done so before? Plan to spend a weekend at the festival. Come to the Fringe Park (corner Rachel at St-Laurent), buy a three-show or six-show pass! Take a risk on something. Fringe shows are typically 45-60 minutes long, it’s easy to take a risk on a show you never know what you might find... Is there anything else you’d like to add? I think it’s important to remember that the Fringe is a festival for artists, presented by artists. Our Fringe staff are all artists that really believe in the mandate of the festival. The key to lasting for 25 years has been that we have never compromised our mandate!
Amy Blackmore is the St Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival’s Executive and Artistic Director. She is also the Executive and Artistic Director of one of Montreal’s staple independent theatres, The MainLine Theatre as well as the founder and Artistic Director of the Bouge d’ici Dance Festival.

Past the blue field and the melting tree, there’s a snowy mountain covered in pines where three hunters are working to rid the forest of squirrels. One day, a fight breaks out; Bar Kapra shoots Bat Kapra and flees. Trout discovers Bat Kapra lying in a grove and takes her home to convalesce, unwittingly getting caught up in Bat Kapra’s plan for revenge. Bar Kapra the Squirrel Hunter explores an autumnal world where the life cycle of squirrels plays a symbolic role in this tender allegory of relationships.
