The business has had roots in Oxfordshire since 1895 and now with showrooms across the UK a new generation of management has also embraced the opportunity to introduce Wesley-Barrells traditional and contemporary designs to customers in countries further afield. It is an exciting challenge. As makers of hand-crafted furniture, Wesley-Barrell does not hold stock of preassembled frames; each and every sofa is built to order to each individual customer’s own specifications. It’s this invitation to be involved in every step of the process that Wesley-Barrell customers hold dear, and the company’s showroom consultants have all spent time in its workshops to ensure that they understand the way that the furniture is made, and how best to guide customers through both the product ranges and the production processes. Wesley-Barrell remains committed to its belief in high-quality products of British provenance that are built with integrity. Whether it is in one of the company’s showrooms, or the levels of expertise available in the workshop, Wesley-Barrell remains passionate about people, about maintaining skills, and about its responsibilities as an ethical employer.

Valentine & Barrell general store – Witney, Oxfordshire Anthony Barrell first went into business in his hometown of Witney, Oxfordshire in 1895. He opened a classic general store the kind to be found in any busy market town at the time selling all manner of goods from furniture and beds made in his workshops to fashion and home wares.

This year as we celebrate our 120th anniversary the company is somewhat different with 13 showrooms nationwide. However there have always been workshops where the upholstery skills needed to hand-craft the beautiful sofas Wesley-Barrell made today have literally been handed down from generation to generation.

Anthony Barrell, his wife Amy and their children. It was undoubtedly with his two sons and three daughter’s future in mind Anthony Barrell decided to break from the Valentine family and start a business of his own specialising in the famous Witney blankets and in the manufacture of upholstered beds and mattresses that employed the skills evident in our sofas today.

Peter Barrell took over the running of the business from his father in the late 1950’s and started to design and develop the range of classic sofa and armchair designs for which Wesley-Barrell is renowned. It was Peter Barrell who saw the importance of taking his furniture to the market and with his French wife Francoise grew the company to open a network of specialist showrooms throughout England.

Thomas Wesley-Barrell continues his father’s bed making business under the name ‘Wesley-Barrell and establishes a mail order firm. The company moves to its present site at 3 Bridge Street, Witney.

to high- quality products “ ...dedicated made with integrity... ” Handmade and all that the word suggests is often too easily over-used, but for Wesley-Barrell it is the business’s guiding principle. In an age when latest technology can really mean mass-production and all the compromises that suggests, Wesley-Barrell remains dedicated to high-quality products made with integrity, that look great and are built to last. There is not one single stage in the production of genuinely hand-made furniture that Wesley-Barrell does not remain wholly committed to. Whether it’s the frame, the springs, the padding, the upholstery, the choice of fabric or the tailoring options, Wesley-Barrell furniture represents attention-to-detail at every single step in the process. It is not a one time thing either, many of Wesley-Barrell’s furniture pieces have become much loved additions to the customer’s home; and in many cases have been returned to the workshop decades after a piece was first made to be renovated or restored using exactly the same levels of craftsmanship that built it in the first place. And neither is it just a love of the process, it’s about the materials too. Manufacturing in a sustainable and socially responsible way is absolutely fundamental to the Wesley-Barrell ethos. Almost every component part of a piece has been carefully considered; the wood is hand-crafted in Wesley Barrell’s own workshops and whether soft or hard woods it will be sourced from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) managed forests, padding materials such as hogs hair will be coated with fire-retardent latex from naturally produced rubber and the wool felt padding used is made from recycled jumpers and cardigans. Today, Wesley-Barrell is proud of its reputation and continues to strive to be at the forefront of British furniture design and making.

QUEEN ANNE Taking its name from its Queen Anne style cabriole legs this classic English fireside wing chair offers excellent support and comfort. Pairing it with a classic wool tartan gives a smart ‘library’ look whilst a bold floral print makes it the perfect statement chair.

SPELSBURY An English country classic the Spelsbury borrows its styling from the traditional Chesterfield. Coil sprung arms and seat base with relaxed duck feather cushions will provide comfort and good looks for years to come.

CONTEMPORARY CLASSICS

STOW Wesley-Barrell offer a distinctive range of frame chairs hand crafted in France that come in a range of wood finishes, they are attractive alternatives to a fully upholstered armchair. The Stow is influenced by the mid-19th Century Louis Philippe period with its simple curved lines and relaxed styling.

The Cokethorpe sofa is a generous interpretation of the Victorian Chesterfield style. A deep buttoned back sweeps into the distinctive curve of the arms showcasing Wesley-Barrell craftsmanship at its finest.

ALDSWORTH A traditional shape with strong lines, scroll arms and inset piping detail make this a smart sofa option. When upholstered in a rich leather the Aldsworth sofa evokes a touch of the ‘gentleman’s club’ lending a timeless quality.

Our friendly design consultants have a wealth of fabric knowledge and design expertise. They can offer advice on room planning and colour co-ordination or can visit your home to fully understand your requirements. They will then provide a design scheme with room plan, colour board and cost estimate. A fee of £250 is fully refundable on orders over £8000. Once happy with your scheme your consultant will help guide you through every stage. They will liaise with the workshops, sourcing additional wall coverings and curtain fabrics if required and be on hand until your scheme is successfully completed.

As the centre piece of your living or family space your sofa is one of the most important investments you will make so it pays to research and spend time choosing your sofa; and whilst good looks are key, your sofa also needs to be practical and comfortable. Here are some of our essential tips on what to look out for when choosing a style that is ideal for you. THE FRAME Looks are essential but it is what is inside the sofa that really counts. The frame should be constructed from a combination of hard wood for strength and softer woods to give flexibility. Wesley-Barrell frames exceed domestic needs and actually meet BS4875 for hotel use.

TESTI NG When buying a sofa, take note of the old adage ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. Looks can be deceiving. Do take time to try your sofa; take your coat off, sit or recline as you would at home, get comfortable and feel the difference. B E S P O K E TA I L O R I N G As all Wesley-Barrell sofas and armchairs are handmade to order we are able to tailor a range of options to suit your needs; contrast piping to frames and cushions, buttoning options, studs to define selected features or fringing to seat bases. In addition we offer a choice of wood finishes on all our beech leg options from natural to light oak or the darker finishes of cherry, mahogany and ebony. Finally a shorter or deeper seat option of 5 cm/2 inches is available on nearly all our sofas so that you can customise seat depth to suit your requirements exactly.

SPR I NGI NG Our frames are fitted with traditional coil springs and in the case of our Heritage Collection the front edge springs are individually hand tied to ensure excellent support and even distribution of weight. Serpentine springs should only be used on the arms or back where stress is less. PA D D I N G The shape of the sofa is built up using layers of padding to create curves and the finished shape. Layers of natural hair, wool felt and cotton wadding are all extremely durable and will allow air circulation to give warmth in the winter and keep you cool in the summer.

FINISH The patterns on Wesley-Barrell sofas will be matched, valances and back panels hand sewn and cushion seams triple stitched. Meticulous attention to detail and tried and tested methods handed down through generations ensure your sofa looks good for longer.

MEASUR E UP Before you head to the showroom it is a good idea to measure up and even make templates out of newspaper. Scale and proportion is key to ensuring everything fits and there is space to move around. Also make a note of some important measurements for access to your home such as your front door and any awkward turns.

CUSH ION FI LLI NG S Whilst we have a standard seat cushion for each sofa style we offer a range of fillings to provide different comfort levels: • Foam; for a firmer seat and easy maintenance • Fibre with feather; firmer than feather but softer than foam • Duck feather; for the soft luxurious feel of natural duck feathers • Fibre; for a soft feel and for those with allergies to feathers • Foam core; for resilience enveloped with a softer feather wrap

STYLE Sofa styles inspired by classic English designs offer a timeless appeal. Compact styles with narrow arms and fixed sprung backs look less bulky and suit a smaller room, whilst corner sofas or contemporary low-slung sofas with lots of scatters suit relaxed family living. Our interior design consultants in each of our showrooms are here to help. FA B R I C S Upholstery fabrics are subjected to the rigorous Martindale test (also known as the rub test) which determines what a material can withstand before showing signs of wear. Fabrics that are suitable for heavy domestic use are Jacquard weaves, damasks, velvets and also leather which will improve with age. Smart wool plaids and plains are also exceptionally hardwearing and inherently flame retardant. We can give advice on how to combine fabrics. We can make a moodboard for you to view in your home so that you can see how the colours, textures and scale of patterns will work in your own lighting conditions.
