PRODUCTION & LIVING

Academic Project, Individual Work

Apartment Design

Instructor: Zhiqiang Xu

Location: Guangzhou, China

Spring 2018

The urban-rural contradiction in China has become increasingly acute with rapid urbanization. In Guangzhou's Chisha Village, the proximity to the garment market has led to the emergence of numerous clothing workshops. However, these workshops are also being used for daily living, leaving no room for entertainment. Additionally, the cheap rent in the area makes it challenging for the residents to secure better accommodation.

THE CONTRADICTION BETWEEN PRODUCTION AND LIVING

The common plan of self-built houses is sitting room +1~2 rooms + kitchen and toilet, which dfoes not leave a space for production activity. If the residential unit is used as a production workshopvv, then the production of furniture will occupy most of the space, and there will be no space to put living objects (sofa, TV, etc.) and no entertainment activities.

STRUCTURE SYSTEM

Concrete and wood are respectively used to form Spaces for production and living.

TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

Through the small hoist and stairwell, workers can easily lift the goods downstairs.

The ground floor provides public space for the villagers to stop and talk. Large pieces of glass and height allow maximum daylight to be obtained so that limited distance between buildings wouldn't make the interior dark.

INTO THE FLOW

UCLA Student Center

Advanced Topic Studio, Fall 2021

Acedemic project, Individual Work

Instructor: Neil Daneri

This project aims to improve the flow and continuity of the space and create a stronger connection with the surrounding site. While people on the street and in the landscape are typically in constant motion, those inside the building usually maintain a relatively stable condition. To enhance the fluidity of the space, will explore design solutions that facilitate movement and provide seamless transitions between different areas. Establishing a stronger connection with the site will make the building feel more integrated into its surroundings, offering a more cohesive experience for its occupants.

The ramp and roof system creates a visually complex and wandering experience due to the stacked volumes. People can walk not only on the ground but also across the roof, providing a higher view of the school. This design enhances the visual connection and adds an element of interest to the space.

The interior space aims to create a soft and ambiguous atmosphere. The streamline stairs and walls blur the edge of the space, drive people come in and explore the building smoothly.

PARALLEL HOUSING

Housing Design

Advanced Topic Studio, Fall 2020

Individual Project

Instructor: Garrett Ricciardi

Housing in Los Angeles is typically isolated and fragmented, with sharp boundaries between private properties and the public space. This creates a discontinuous walking experience with few places to stop and socialize. To improve the sense of community, this project adopts parallel walls to create a continuous and walkable apartment, both visually and physically. The shear walls are aligned at 45-degree angles, allowing for more corners and spaces beside roads for people to gather and interact.

Parking Lot & Gym Design

Advanced Topic Studio, Spring 2020

Individual Project

Instructor: Jason Payne

The project aims to achieve sectional complexity by breaking up repetitive slabs. Instead of deforming the slabs to create differentiation, I chose to maintain a regular circulation and add irregular spaces on each floor. This approach creates a dynamic experience for users, as the car passes through the same place on each floor, but the space changes due to its different position relative to the irregular spaces and degree of interaction with the programs.

This is a competition project for a mixed-use development that aims to connect a plot of land that is divided by a highway, and create a sustainable public space for a crowded urban area with a lack of public spaces. To achieve this, the project features a three-dimensional corridor that extends through the development, integrating the architecture with the surrounding urban context. The corridor serves as a continuous public space, connecting different parts of the development and offering a dynamic and engaging environment for both commercial and residential uses.

This is a retirement community located in Nanjing Tianquan Lake. The design hopes to attract more visitors to the area through good sight design and public space suitable for all ages, and avoid the situation of elderly people who are far away from the city and lack of public life. In this project, I was responsible for the design of a part of the serviced apartment and the design of the club. The focus of these two designs is how to better combine architecture and landscape.
