Timber Facade Precedents
Damiani-Holz & Ko (DH&K) by MoDus Architects
The exterior skin has two layers, both made from laminated veneer lumber (LVL). The base layer comprises 156, 0.83-1 inch thick sheets treated for fungal and weather resistance, and finished in a dark stain. Lighter coloured curvilinear fins lie perpendicular to these darker panels to add depth and dynamism to the façade. Windows punctuate this geometry, while the timber louvres shade the structures’ envelope.
Restaurant Onda by Alliance arkitekter + Mapt
The characteristic wooden facade, a ribbon, in the shape of a wave, gives the building a distinct identity. Inspired by the maritime surroundings and the Norwegian tradition of wooden construction, the multipurpose room takes its organic shape from the aesthetical language of a boat hull. Extensive use of wood, a renewable and environmentally friendly material, is the main sustainable feature.

Shimao-The Wave Showroom / Lacime Architects
• Located at Binhai New Area on the eastern coast of Tianjin, it is a diversified land that integrates entertainment, edutainment and culture.
• Inspired by the idea of wave, the building focuses on the theme of “water”, extracts the concept of “water drop and wave” from waves and creates an image on the sea.
The Wave Faรงade Carpark / Scott Brownrigg
• The Pierhead Street multi-storey car park with a rolling wave structure in Cardiff Bay.
• The wave structure is created by tensioning a coated mesh fabric over an undulating steel framework, running along each parking level. These waves are layered up the elevation, creating a flowing surface along the length of the Façade.
VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre / Perkins+Will
• The final structure utilizes a glued laminated timber (or ‘glulam’) post-andbeam assembly to support the complex curves at the edges of each panel.
