Welcome
This winter, we welcome back the mighty Bolshoi Ballet for the QPAC International Series 2019. When they last performed at QPAC in 2013, the Bolshoi’s season was one of the cultural highlights of the year, an achievement I’m sure they will repeat in 2019. If you missed out last time, now is your chance to see what is arguably one of the most distinguished ballet companies in the world! The Bolshoi will present two works: Spartacus – originally created for the company and one of the works for which the company is renowned; and Jewels – a visually stunning and colourful work by George Balanchine. These performances are exclusive to Queensland and our thanks must go to the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland for its ongoing support of the QPAC International Series.
Other programs and artists we welcome back to QPAC this winter include Duck an original Out of the Box production for young children, the QPAC Choir with a showcase concert called Rock Choir, and Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier who return to the Cremorne Theatre to perform EPIC. Drama fans and young people will have the opportunity to be immersed in Slingsby’s version of Oscar Wilde’s play The Young King and classical music fans will not want to miss out on Nicole Car in Recital. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Bangarra Dance Theatre on 30 years! Bangarra returns to QPAC as part of its annual national tour with a new work thoughtfully titled 30 years of sixty five thousand. I look forward to seeing this production and to sharing in the celebrations of one of our great national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performing arts companies as they mark this milestone. I hope you find something in our winter program that inspires you to visit QPAC.

Touring with her five-piece band, Van Etten returns to Australia after guest starring in Netflix series The OA and David Lynch’s revival of Twin Peaks. Recently released to rave reviews, Remind Me Tomorrow veers towards the driving, dark glimmer moods that have illuminated the edges of Van Etten’s
music and pursues them full force. Expect an honest and subtle approach to love and longing, with an upbeat energy that offers an unexpected gift to Van Etten’s celebrated minimal meditative sound. Melbourne pop/folk and rock musician BATTS will join Van Etten as special guest. SOULFUL JOURNEYS 8 June | Concert Hall 1 hour and 47 mins (incl interval) "I want to take listeners to a place that’s kind of familiar but also unsettling," says Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth about Spiritus, an exploration of the psychological and primal impact of the wind. Stylistically, the music glimmers with transparency, fresh harmonies and inventive timbral blends. Dream in Debussy’s impressionistic Nocturnes, where a women’s wordless chorus
contributes another skein of luminous colour in these stunning forays into light and shade. Championed by numerous cello greats, Dvořák’s soulful concerto radiates tuneful glory. Branded the ‘greatest’ by music lovers, the ingenious scoring ensures the cello’s sorrowful voice is always distinctly heard. PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

TOSCA 13 – 22 June | Lyric Theatre 2 hours and 50 mins (two intervals) Often described as the greatest opera of them all, Tosca embraces the grand themes of the human spirit brought to life by one of the greatest composers of them all, Giacomo Puccini. Tosca, a famous singer, is devoted to the artist Cavaradossi but Scarpia, the Chief of Police, has other plans and shows no remorse in his intent to
destroy their love. Tosca is a strong woman in a male dominated world. Refusing to submit to a system that wants to mercilessly exploit her, she works to tear it apart – but there’s a terrible cost. 18 – 19 June | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour and 30 mins (no interval)
Music from the Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, The National’s Bryce Dessner and Sufjan Stevens presented alongside some of their shared classical musical influences: Polish composers Szymanowski and Lutosławski.
Ruthie Henshall Live And Intimate is the first solo tour of Australia from one of the most celebrated performers in the history of the West End.
AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
A favourite of Richard Tognetti’s Szymanowski’s surging String Quartet No.2 is a fusion of neoclassicism and Polish folk music. Bryce Dessner’s Réponse Lutosławski is a homage to Lutosławski, with one foot in neoclassicism and the other in the avant-garde. The suite from Jonny Greenwood’s film score, There Will Be Blood, is foreboding, hopeful and beautifully evocative. Sufjan Stevens is widely celebrated as an American indie luminary. Run Rabbit Run is a précis of his 2009 album Enjoy Your Rabbit. Rhythmic drive, catchy melodies and mesmerising string sounds make for an energising and immersive experience.
Her multi-award winning career has seen her star in the most popular musicals in the West End and on Broadway, from her iconic appearance as Fantine in Les Misérables to Cats, Miss Saigon, Crazy For You, She Loves Me, Marguerite, Oliver!, A Chorus Line, Putting It Together, Billy Elliot and her legendary appearance as both Roxie and Velma in Chicago in the West End and on Broadway. This new and intimate show is a rare opportunity to see this dazzling star up close and personal, reinterpreting highlights from her acclaimed career as well as exploring the work of other iconic artists including Stephen Sondheim and Carole King to The Beatles and Barbra Streisand. With a combination of psychic twinship, childlike enthusiasm, rigorous preparation of songs, and zero preparation of what happens in between, Megan
and Stephanie and the five dollfaces that back them up have created a musical outfit that is celebratory, surprising, sweet, tuneful, eye-catching, thoughtprovoking and amusing. 26 – 28 June and 4 – 7 July | Lyric Theatre 2 hours and 50 mins (incl two intervals) Moscow’s mighty Bolshoi Ballet returns to Australia with their grandiose epic Spartacus, recounting the story of a Roman slave’s fight for freedom. In ancient Rome, Spartacus, a Thracian soldier, is turned captive by Crassus with his wife Phrygia. JEWELS QPAC INTERNATIONAL SERIES 2019
29 – 30 June and 2 – 3 July | Lyric Theatre 2 hours (incl two intervals) George Balanchine’s glittering three-act ballet Jewels was inspired by the beauty of the gem stones he saw in the New York store of jewellers Van Cleef and Arpels. Each of the three movements draws on a different stone for its inspiration and a different composer for its sound: • the French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the lyricism of Emeralds • the fire of Rubies comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York, and • the grandeur and elegance of Diamonds is set to Tchaikovsky’s opulent Third Symphony. Sumptuously beautiful, Jewels offers audiences a unique chance for the Bolshoi Ballet to showcase its dancing strength in depth. people across the world and the connections that remain, with songs by Billy Bragg, June Tabor, Sting and others. THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO PAUL WRITTEN BY AND STARRING JONATHAN BIGGINS A SOFT TREAD PRODUCTION
9 – 13 July | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour and 30 mins (no interval) One of Australia’s favourite performers, Jonathan Biggins, is Paul Keating – visionary, reformer and rabble-rouser – in a highly anticipated new comedy, The Gospel According to Paul. Full of intelligence and wit, The Gospel According to Paul is a funny, insightful and occasionally poignant portrait of Paul Keating, the man that – as he tells it – single-handedly shaped contemporary Australia. Showcasing his eviscerating wit, rich rhetoric and ego the size of Everest, The Gospel According to Paul distils Keating’s essence into 90 minutes,
40
focussing on key biographical milestones, landmark political achievements and personal obsessions. It shows the man who grew up in the tribe of the Labor Party and gained an education at the knee of Jack Lang, who treated economics as an artform, and demanded we confront the wrongs of our colonial past. Biggins asks the question – what can we learn today from this singular politician, and the momentous time in our country’s history he dominated? PRESENTED BY QPAC IN ASSOCIATION WITH SOFT TREAD

SCHOOL OF ROCK From 12 July | Lyric Theatre 2 hours and 40 mins (incl interval) Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway and London smash hit musical is set to rock Brisbane this July. School Of Rock is ‘loud and cheeky, a feel-good experience with a hint of anarchic wildness” (Evening Standard London).

Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There, he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band.

THE GREAT SYMPHONY 20 July | Concert Hall 1 hour and 48 mins (incl interval) Franz Schubert’s ninth symphony is like a fantastic machine from the steam age. Like hundreds of tiny cogs and wheels, small snatches of melody are passed back and forth between the instruments of the orchestra. Moment by moment, the music builds into an epic and joyous wall of sound. Also in this concert, enjoy the chance to hear the viola as a solo instrument. Bartók uses the instrument’s mellow tone to great effect in this intense viola concerto, which

Through their unique understanding of the star constellations and their creation of star maps and Songlines, they were able to establish sophisticated trade routes covering vast distances across the Australian continent. Likewise European explorers
used star navigation to explore the mysterious east and unknown southern oceans. youth and adulthood, urban and rural settings – form the background to a meditative soundscape. This revival features new imagery and music spanning Britten and Janáček to R.E.M., and the centrepiece is Peteris eteris Vasks’ pensive violin concerto, Distant Light. No sibling rivalry here! Brisbane-born sisters Monica and Sarah Curro make a welcome return home from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to show their musical mettle. The program celebrates old and new, with the iconic concerto affectionately known as the Bach Double and a stunning work for two violins and strings by Richard Mills, played in the 70th birthday year of this distinguished Toowoomba-born composer. Transfigured Night traces the romantic story of two lovers taking in an evening walk, but even in their state of blissful rapture one of them has a secret to reveal. It’s one of the most passionate, sensual and gripping pieces in the entire string orchestra repertoire.
The incredibly talented students from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University Performing Arts join us for a fourth year. Their polished performances have won over larger audiences each year.

This year Rob Mills will be our very special guest artist. Bringing a wealth of showbiz experience from his performances on stage as well as his many television roles, the star of stage and screen will perform songs from Jesus Christ Superstar, Last Five Years, Grease and Wicked. Our ever-popular collaboration with the Quensland Conservatorium Griffith University Performing Arts continues in our production That’s Show Business. These 90 young artists have stunned audiences with their energetic and highly entertaining routines in recent years, and 2019 will be no different. PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND POPS ORCHESTRA

I AM SPARTACUS: REVOLUTIONARIES, RADICALS AND THEATRES OF DISSENT
QPAC TUNNEL
18 June – 14 September Tony Gould Gallery
From 14 June QPAC Tunnel
Spartacus was an enslaved Thracian gladiator with heroic determination and little to lose. In 73 BCE, he led his fellow slaves in a legendary uprising against the brutality of the Roman Republic, becoming a symbol for oppressed people standing together to overturn injustice. The story of Spartacus has been told and retold across many artforms, reminding us of the enduring power of the arts to speak publicly about social and political injustice.
Explore the moods and motivations of composers and choreographers behind the world famous ballets featured in the 2019 QPAC International Series. PRESENTED BY QPAC
To this day, on the stage and in the street, revolutionaries and radicals use elements of theatre to create visible platforms for dissent that at once entertain, inform and persuade. PRESENTED BY QPAC
