Welcome

The arrival of the festive season often prompts moments of celebration and reflection. Here at QPAC, we are reflecting on the fact that in the 2018-19 year, we welcomed more than 1.5 million people and worked with artists and companies to create new experiences and new work. We celebrate with a summer program steeped in tradition as A Christmas Carol by shake & stir theatre co kicks off a roll call of Christmas favourites including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Messiah, Queensland Ballet’s The Nutcracker and the loopy but much-loved A Very Kransky Christmas. Our annual Spirit of Christmas concerts round out the festive season program, a cherished tradition since QPAC first opened its doors in 1985.

All this festive cheer is balanced perfectly with popular music offerings, from Grammy Award winning band America to tribute shows featuring the music of Queen and the Bee Gees. Back by popular demand is the acclaimed musical The Book of Mormon: a great opportunity whether you missed it earlier this year or want to enjoy again this fantastic production and its irreverent humour. In January, Circa brings a touch of quirkiness with Wolfgang’s Magical Musical Circus, followed by shake & stir returning with Roald Dahl’s classic Fantastic Mr Fox and audiences will be wowed by the world’s most famous magicians, Penn & Teller, on their first ever Australian tour. February promises a heady mix of classic and contemporary theatre, as well as music and dance, from American music legend Randy Newman, through to the loveable craziness of RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werq The World Tour. Some of Australia’s leading performance companies will deliver the outstanding experiences we’ve come to expect from them including Queensland Theatre’s Emerald City and The Australian Ballet’s The Happy Prince. I hope that you’ll find something in this diverse and thoughtful summer season that entices you to visit us at QPAC very soon.

Chief Executive QPAC ABOUT QPAC Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is one of Australia’s leading centres for live performance. HANNAH GADSBY – DOUGLAS 29 – 30 January | Concert Hall 1 hour and 20 mins (no interval) Who is Douglas? Well, apparently, Hannah Gadsby thinks he is the only one who can help her follow up on the trail blazed by her last show Nanette.

While Nanette was a random barista, Douglas is a very specific dog, and the only thing they have in common is they’ve inspired Hannah to put pen to paper and turn out a show you couldn’t possibly expect. Hannah found her voice with Nanette and with Douglas she plans to use it.

Hannah Gadsby’s tenth solo show was Nanette. It did alright. Nanette played around Australia and the UK for eighteen months, taking out the top prizes at the Melbourne and Edinburgh festivals before sitting down in New York in Spring 2018 and dropping a Netflix special that summer that won her a Peabody Award and Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special, starting a global conversation that continues today.

Hannah Gadsby has beaten out a star-studded field to win the 2019 Helpmann Award for Best Comedy Performer for her smash-hit stand up show Douglas. presented by token events

POWER AND GLORY

8 February | Concert Hall Duration to be confirmed at qpac.com.au A concerto is typically a piece of music for solo instrument and orchestra, but in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, he gave the solo part to three instruments: violin, cello and piano. This Concerto is grand and beautiful and a great way to open this 250th anniversary year of Beethoven’s birth. It will be performed by three brilliant young talents of Australian classical music: Emily Sun, Caleb Wong and Aura Go. There have been debates over

whether Shostakovich’s spectacular Symphony No.5 was secretly criticising Stalinist Russia. Whatever its hidden messages, it earned a half hour standing ovation when it was first heard, and we can’t wait to wow our audiences with this masterpiece. In this concert we are also delighted to introduce the world to new music by talented Australian composer Melody Eötvös. presented by queensland symphony orchestra and qpac

The ACO opens its landmark 2020 Season in epic symphonic form, as it celebrates the 250-year anniversary of the birth of the great Ludwig van Beethoven.

Performance poet, rapper, actor, novelist and playwright Kate Tempest has reinvented the power of the spoken word.

Richard Tognetti will lead an expanded ACO through the beloved composer’s first three symphonies. The effervescent Symphony No.1 and spirited Symphony No.2 open the program, paving the way for the composer’s third, and arguably most electrifying, symphonic achievement: the magnificent Eroica. This beloved juggernaut rises beyond its initial dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte to encompass heroism, disillusion and grandeur. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear the ACO perform three full symphonies from the world’s most influential and monumental composer. presented by australian chamber orchestra

They pour out of her in a blend of hip hop and poetry, rhymes intertwined with post-dubstep electronic beats, giving voice to the concerns of a generation – poverty, passion, alienation, gentrification, climate change, class, intolerance, acceptance, loss, and love. With stripped back accompaniment, she encompasses tracks from 2016’s Let Them Eat Chaos through to her latest album The Book of Traps and Lessons, seamlessly and thrillingly moving from speech to song, sailing over grooves then suddenly locking in with them, switching from blistering attack to profound reflection, from utter desperation to surprising hope.
