Welcome

Spring is a time of romance and reinvention. As the heart of performing arts in Queensland, we welcome diverse audiences from all over Australia and beyond to experience and learn from the best in arts and culture. This year, we have worked closely with Brisbane Festival to bring an ambitious line up of major artists, companies and events. For all who love music, dance and theatre, our program contains a wealth of live performances to suit all tastes and I encourage you to discover and rediscover the spirit of their stories.

Among the first productions of the season, Queensland Symphony Orchestra returns for a night of Romance and Revolution featuring some of the most inventive melodies of Prokofiev, Beethoven and Vine. For those looking for something a little more risqué, Briefs promises steamy Close Encounters testament to their masculine artistry. And over school holidays, our younger audiences will delight in the innovative, visually spectacular production of Laser Beak Man, brought to life by local creative geniuses Dead Puppet Society, La Boite, and Brisbane Festival in association with PowerArts. Further to the spirit of new growth and strengthened connections, QPAC’s celebration of First Nations’ arts and culture, Clancestry: A Celebration of Country, returns this November as a three week program of new and existing work, installations and community gatherings. I encourage you to get involved in the wide range of experiences on offer and learn from and share in the celebrations of our dynamic First Nations Peoples. As we draw to the close of another fantastic year, our spring program is bursting with many more performances sure to create lasting memories with all those who visit. Please enjoy exploring these pages and I hope to welcome you to QPAC soon.

SS MENDI DANCING THE DEATH DRILL

BRISBANE FESTIVAL

WE LIVE HERE

5 – 7 September | Playhouse 1 hour and 25 mins (no interval)

5 – 8 September | Cremorne Theatre 55 mins (no interval)

This is the story of ‘The Black Titanic’, told by one of South Africa’s great music theatre ensembles.

This inspiring circus show by Brisbane’s very own Flipside Circus celebrates the memories and moments that make a life.

In January 1917, the SS Mendi set sail from Cape Town, taking hundreds of black South African volunteers to support the Allied forces fighting in France. But early in the morning of 21 February 1917, the Mendi collided with a cargo ship amid thick fog in the English Channel and sank, killing 646 people. SS Mendi: Dancing the Death Drill, based on the book by Fred Khumalo, is powerful and moving music theatre inspired by the real-life tragic maritime disaster. Individuals from conflicting cultures become united in a final, defiant dance as the ship goes down.

Based on the stories of parents, siblings and guests of Hummingbird House (Queensland’s only youth hospice), We Live Here explores themes of resilience, chaos and the beauty of a moment shared. We Live Here premiered at Metro Arts in 2018, winning two Matilda Awards (Best Director, Best Circus/Physical Theatre). suitable for ages

JACOB COLLIER 6 September | Concert Hall 2 hours and 30 mins (incl intervals) Grammy Award-winning composer-producer-multiinstrumentalist Jacob Collier returns to Australia on the back of acclaimed sell-out shows in April of last year. The 24 year old prodigy has been dubbed by many as one of the most innovative, creative musicians of his generation, rising to popularity through his viral homemade multi-track YouTube videos. Jacob Collier’s new touring show scales up the concepts behind his original one man show to

incorporate a band of multi-talented performers playing over 30 acoustic and electronic instruments. This multi-instrument-multi-performer creature sends messages to a custom designed lighting system based on input from the performers, resulting in a tightly synchronised visual experience to accompany classics such as live looping and Jacob’s custom-built harmoniser. presented by brisbane festival

8 September | Concert Hall 1 hour and 10 mins (no interval)

11 – 14 September | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour (no interval)

Inspired by Bach's grand choral work, St Matthew Passion is a musical retelling of Christ’s final hours on earth, using some of Bach’s magnificent vocal music set alongside South African traditional songs and laments and a full marimba orchestra.

Writer, comedian and natural-born troublemaker John Safran has made a career of turning up where he isn’t wanted. Recently he’s been snooping around Aussie Nazis and jihadis. Now he wants to tell you the hilarious stories of how he gets in and – for the most part – avoids being thumped.

BRISBANE FESTIVAL

This ground-breaking, semi-staged concert deals with the political and spiritual battles Christ faces as he struggles to teach and inspire in an occupied state. Isango Ensemble has performed to full houses all over the world and won several international awards, especially for their innovative interpretations of Western plays and music. This is their newest creation, and this Australian exclusive is only the second time the piece has been performed anywhere in the world.

ROMANCE AND REVOLUTION

TREVOR ASHLEY IN DOUBLE D’S: TWO DECADES OF DIVADOM

12 September | Concert Hall 1 hour and 55 mins (incl interval)

13 September | Concert Hall 2 hours (incl interval)

What do you call a piece that only runs five minutes? Australian composer Carl Vine decided a short work deserved a short title and called it simply V (for the Roman numeral!). “I wanted to sing of the free, happy man, his mighty power, his chivalry and purity of spirit,” said Prokofiev about his searching Fifth Symphony which overflows with persuasive charm. Yet it’s also witty, edgy and contrarian, with exquisite melodies. When Beethoven wrote his third Piano Concerto, he was breaking new grounds with his music; creating a new type of sound world that had never been heard before. This concerto will show off the piano and orchestra to spectacular effect, especially in the hands of master pianist Paul Lewis.

He has been the body, voice and spirit behind some of Australian musical theatre and cabaret’s most vivid characters, refusing to be defined by gender, style, or the usual showbiz rules. But there is one role that Trevor Ashley doesn’t take on stage very often: himself.

QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

the artist-in-residence program is supported by the university of queensland

At Brisbane Festival, he’ll do just that. Accompanied by wunderkind James Simpson and an eight-piece band, ‘La TrAshley’ recounts some of his favourite moments of his career, with epic music, laugh-outloud comedy, and a sequinned gown or six. Expect songs and stories from Les Mis, Hairspray and Priscilla and special appearances by several well-known divas. Who knows – maybe Liza Minnelli, Cher and Shirley Bassey will appear! presented by brisbane festival

How can you reach your potential when someone left it on the top shelf?

Hilarious, surprising and completely on point, Anne Edmonds is the rockstar of Australian comedy and everybody knows it. Her punchlines don’t just sting, they poison.

CAL WILSON GIFTED UNDERACHIEVER

Cal’s been at this whole life thing for a while now, but she still hasn’t quite nailed it. She’s not sure if she has imposter syndrome or whether she’s just faking it. Everyone else seems to have got it together but she’s still not sure she has all the right pieces. Why don’t people pull over for ambulances? Has she done enough with her life? Does anyone eat brussel sprouts by choice? Cal has questions about everything, which makes her annoying to watch a movie with.

ANNE EDMONDS WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?

Since bursting onto the scene in 2010, she has brought her exquisitely-incisive characters, songs and worldview to clubs and comedy festivals around Australia and our TV screens (Have You Been Paying Attention?, The Project, The Edge Of The Bush). Anne is at the peak of her powers – there is nothing wrong with her. How about you? presented by brisbane festival

Postnatal breakdowns, an imploding relationship and an extremely sick child left her sitting beneath the waves hoping she could slowly turn to shell.

Three years later and she is able to deal with life again. Who do we become after trauma? How do we turn pain into power? How do we fly instead of drown? Tonight, a new legend will be created – an invincible and fearless woman. this performance contains emotive content, strong

Ashgrove Dance School originates from the oldest ballet school in Queensland. Commencing in 1889 and celebrating 120 years this year it has been under the direction of Wendy and Judy Lowe since 1973. To celebrate this milestone there will be a reunion function in the Playhouse Function Room between the matinee and evening performances.

Tune in to the magical charms of violin and strings. Revel in music by Bach and Handel, the towering composers of the Baroque Period. Bach’s compelling and energised Suite is majestic. Stately grandeur also informs Handel’s Concerto with its glorious antiphonal effects, the period’s equivalence of stereo. Also savour the refreshing sound world of horns, oboes and bassoon. In Mendelssohn’s Concerto, the violin’s soaring melody, the orchestra’s exquisitely spun accompaniment and the astonishing pyrotechnics required from the soloist is breathtaking. Enjoy more of this composer’s flair for crafting melody and dramatic string tapestries in Sinfonia No.10.

As any child will tell you, our toys have a vibrant history – they’re almost alive. In this concert Music Director Alondra de la Parra will take us on an orchestral romp through a delightful selection of music that breathes new life into our toys. There will be puppets, dolls and other surprises. Marvel at the Toy Symphony, written by Leopold Mozart (Wolfgang Amadeus’ father), featuring some pretty wild noisemakers.

Inspired by surrealism, pounding piano chords combine with darkly murmured strings, brass and percussion at the start of Ibarra’s theatrical Sinfonia. Savour Tchaikovsky’s Concerto’s tunefulness and breathtaking virtuosity in which the violin is, ‘pulled about and beaten black and blue.’ Admire the lovely flute and violin exchange in the second movement and sit back for the onslaught of gypsy, kick-up-your- heels vivacity in the volatile Trepak derived finale. The concert ends with the audience favourite: Beethoven’s ‘Pastorale’ Symphony. In the 19th century, it conjured up images of the countryside, in the 20th century it was associated with Disney’s Fantasia – but in all eras, it’s music of breathtaking beauty.

Piers Lane’s Chopin by Candlelight recital will evoke the intimate atmosphere of the Parisian salons of the 19th century.

The final concert in the National Tour Season is a big, exuberant celebration. Opening with the Australian Premiere of American composer Andrew Norman’s Gran Turismo, revving up for a showdown by two of the most important names in the romantic era.

PIERS LANE

BRAHMS & DVOŘÁK

In a beautiful candlelit stage setting Piers will perform some of Chopin’s greatest works, including the epic G minor Ballade called ‘the Odyssey of Chopin’s soul’. Piers has a special affinity for Chopin, capturing the poetic fervour, elegance and grace of his music and his indomitable spirit. The first half of the program includes Brahms’s lovely Four Piano Pieces and Schubert’s mighty ‘Wanderer Fantasy’, a work both technically challenging and surpassingly beautiful. Piers Lane’s busy international career sees him performing regularly at the BBC Proms, giving recitals worldwide and performing with leading orchestras and conductors. He is the Artistic Director of the Sydney International Piano Competition.

Richard Tognetti and Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve perform Brahms’ Double Concerto, the composer’s last orchestral work. Brahms’ aim in combining the two solo instruments was to create a deeply sonorous and wide-ranging string sound. Dvořák’s Symphony No.8 expresses a kaleidoscope of emotions and manifests the composer’s love of nature and Czech folk music. Take this rare opportunity to get up close and personal with Rob as he discusses his approach to the Octagon, his recent clashes with Yoel Romero, his up-coming battle with Kelvin Gastelum and the personal journey that has led him to become one of the world’s most respected mixed martial artists.

Michael Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades, bringing the music of the Great American songbook to the world. From recordings that have earned him five Grammy Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe – in addition to his appearances at iconic venues such as The White House, Buckingham Palace, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House – his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time.

Robert Whittaker is the undisputed UFC Middleweight Champion. The poster boy of Mixed Martial Arts in Australia and New Zealand, Rob is regarded as one of the premier athletes of his time. presented by the harbour agency

KEEPSAKES: POSTERS, PROGRAMS AND PRINTED EPHEMERA FROM THE QPAC MUSEUM COLLECTION

UNEARTHED

24 September – 23 November | Tony Gould Gallery Free Exhibition

Until 3 November | QPAC Tunnel Free entry

Have you ever souvenired a poster, stashed a ticket or saved a program from a memorable show?

Our songs, dances and languages are all linked and are cared for by each person who has connection to that country.

Like so many paper time machines, these things have the power to make a world of past performances, places and people seem suddenly vivid and alive. Mass produced theatrical ephemera continues to be collected by theatre goers and theatre makers alike, and QPAC Museum’s ever-expanding collection of posters, programs and printed ephemera is valued in many ways. Beyond mere documentation of performances, it is treasured for the fascinating diversity of social and cultural memories these keepsakes bring to mind.

Country takes in everything within the landscape – waters, trees, rocks, plants, animals, foods, medicines, stories and sacred places. We have custodial responsibilities to care for our country, to ensure that it continues in proper order and maintains its heartbeat. Unearthing their stories through visual arts, five Aboriginal artists will create distinct durational works that depict each individual’s cultural connection to their country. Featuring the following artists: Dylan Mooney with Kane Brunjes, Casey Coolwell, Rachael Sarra and Warraba Weatherall
