Welcome

This autumn at QPAC is a rich offering of Queensland premieres and returning favourites across a wide range of arts filled with laughs, wonder and elegance. What better way to kick off the season than by entering a “world of pure imagination” with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opening in March. Whether on page or screen, Roald Dahl’s delicious classic has charmed young and old for years and its leap to the stage will be sure to delight. Following Charlie is another familiar classic, this time featuring the unlikeliest of heroes, as Shrek The Musical brings its wry twist on the fairy tale to QPAC for the first time. QPAC is delighted to continue our partnership with the World Science Festival Brisbane, with engaging speakers and big ideas in March.

Carl Barron headlines a fantastic season of comedy that also features Tom Gleeson and a QPAC Presents season of the Umbilical Brothers. In April, we welcome superstar magicians Penn and Teller for their inimitable blend of magic and comedy. In a world premiere co-presented by QPAC, Australia’s favourite blue heeler TV family hits the stage for the first time with Bluey's Big Play – The Stage Show in May. And, in a milestone year for a number of the state’s arts companies, Queensland Ballet will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a glittering gala followed by Dracula. The arts have the power to delight, to entertain, and even to expand your horizons. And in the richness and diversity of QPAC’s autumn offering, I’m sure audiences of all ages will find something to connect with.

ROLLING THUNDER VIETNAM

15 March | Concert Hall Duration to be confirmed at qpac.com.au

18 – 19 March | Concert Hall 2 hours and 20 mins (incl interval)

In the 15th century, a new form of dance emerged and within a couple of hundred years it had taken Europe by storm. Ballet was the court entertainment of King Louis XIV in the 1600s, and by the 1800s, was so popular that every composer who wanted to have their opera performed in Paris, had to work out how to get a ballet into the plot! In this first Music on Sundays concert for 2020, we’ll take your ears on a journey through the history of French ballet, from the early court music through to the opera house, showcasing the gorgeous and dynamic melodies that have powered the feet of dancers through the ages!

War, love, protest and peace… Rolling Thunder Vietnam is more timely and relevant than ever given the political tensions and uncertainty in the world today. The show combines personal stories of young soldiers with classic songs of the era. This stirring theatrical concert draws audiences inside the lives of men on the battlefront and those they love at home. It’s an epic journey of love, loss, bravery, and faith.

CHAT 10 LOOKS 3 LIVE

20 March | Rooftop Lounge 1 hour (no interval)

20 March | Concert Hall 1 hour and 15 mins (no interval)

What does it take to be a “successful Aboriginal” in this modern, post-colonial, post-multicultural, post-offensive, post-post world? Brothers and self-proclaimed Successful Aboriginals Texas and Travis De Vries are here to answer that question along with any others you might have – and some that you don’t!

Since Chat 10 Looks 3 last visited Brisbane, Leigh Sales has collected an Order of Australia and a Walkley Award. Thanks to her resulting imperiousness with the decreasingly relevant Annabel Crabb, the pair will visit Sales’ hometown of Brisbane for one night only, for which purpose only the majesty and sheer size of QPAC will suffice.

Part satire, part advice show (also satire), BRORIGINALS LIVE is a roller coaster ride of standup comedy, sibling rivalry, podcasting and race politics. The BRORIGINALS podcast began when brothers Texas and Travis re-connected after being estranged for ten years. Realising that they had both become Successful Aboriginals in their time apart, they took on the responsibility to pass this knowledge on to the future generations, drawing on 80,000 years of cultural heritage and attempt to teach their audience how to be better Aboriginals, and maybe… better humans.

Will Crabb get a word in edgewise? Will they be able to locate and discuss any books at all that are not either written by, or endorsed by Sales herself? These questions remain to be answered; best come and see.

Ballet synchronises balance, precision, poise and strength in an exquisitely effortless performance. Behind the beauty is a fascinating mixture of physics and physicality. We’ll look to neuroscience and psychology to explain how the sleeping and waking selves can live in the same skull, and what each can tell us about the other.

Forget the sixth sense! It now seems that humans have way more than that. Our senses keep us alive and build our individual picture of the world. But perception is not always reality and senses can falter. Discover how senses work, what can go wrong and how science is progressing to fix the problems.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

ARVO PÄRT & SHOSTAKOVICH 30 March | Concert Hall 1 hour and 35 mins (incl interval) Joy and creativity can’t be held down forever, so even in the darkest decades of cruel oppression that spread from Soviet Russia through Eastern Europe in the 20th century, music bloomed and imaginations flew.

Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony in C minor, a signature piece for the virtuosic ACO, was a lament for victims of fascism and war, but also an act of self-reflection whose movements evolve from elegy and brutal force into acceptance and farewell.

Estonian Arvo Pärt is one of the most performed and influential living composers. In his deeply loved work tabula rasa, for two violins, prepared piano and orchestra, he extends “small steps of tolerance to the world”, seeking spirituality and independence through silence and harmony.

Resistance will be whispered, literally, during Saariaho’s Nymphéa: Misterioso. The short piece by the Finnish composer, whose country has always had a complicated and delicate relationship with its large neighbour, Russia, includes a poem by the great 20th century Russian poet, Arseny Tarkovsky, which will be whispered by members of the Orchestra.

Meanwhile, within Russia, Shostakovich and Prokofiev represented two still hotly contested strands: the supposed collaborators and the resisters.

Beethoven’s Grand Fugue has been termed “a great artistic testament to the human capacity for meaning” and provides a gripping Season 2020 opening work. Phillip Glass’s Echorus commemorates the inspiring humanity of the great violinist, Yehudi Menuhin, with a text by Alan Ginsberg read by acclaimed local actor, Barbara Lowing.

The story goes that an early listener to Mozart’s Symphony No.41 heard the opening flourishes and was reminded of the Roman god Jupiter and his thunderbolts. The name stuck, and this symphony, one of the greatest pieces of orchestral music ever written, has been known as the Jupiter Symphony ever since. Featured alongside this classical masterpiece will be Britten’s gorgeous Les Illuminations, performed by Australian soprano, Emma Pearson. Recently returned from a 10 year stint wowing audiences in Germany, she is sure to melt the hearts of Queensland music-lovers. Saturday evening audiences will hear another famous work with a nickname: Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony – unfinished because Schubert died before completing it. Amazingly it’s perfect as it is.

Heading to the Playhouse for its 2020 season, Biggins exquisitely showcases Keating’s eviscerating wit, rich rhetoric and ego the size of Everest, distilling Keating’s essence into 90 minutes,

focussing on key biographical milestones, landmark political achievements and personal obsessions. Biggins asks the question – what can we learn today from this singular politician, and the momentous time in our country’s history he dominated?

Driven by unbridled passion, Dracula unleashes a reign of terror in his pursuit of love.

We owe a great deal to the film composers of our time for elevating the cinema experience with memorable and moving music. This is perhaps most evident when telling stories about war, and in this second instalment of our Cinematic series we will perform music that depicts the heroism and heartbreak of battle. Originally conceived as a one movement “Concert Phantasie”, Schumann revised and expanded this work into the famous piano concerto loved by audiences today. QYS is joined by one of Australia’s most respected and sought after musicians, pianist Stephen Emmerson.

2019, listeners to ABC Classic voted In Ludwig van Beethoven Australia’s favourite composer in their Top 100 Composer countdown. Why is Beethoven so popular? We think it’s because his music appeals to everyone – if you know a lot about music, you can enjoy his masterful compositions and the amazing technical challenges for the musicians who perform him. But equally, if you are brand new to orchestra music, Beethoven’s music contains enough beauty, excitement and deep emotion to instantly enchant you. This Music on Sundays concert will feature several highlights of Beethoven’s music before concluding with a rendition of his funniest work – wait until you hear the metronome joke! – his Symphony No.8.

SHOSTAKOVICH 10

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEETHOVEN

Overwhelmingly successful at its premiere, the violinist David Oistrakh said of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10 “The Symphony is imbued with lofty ethical principles, deep humanity … Its strength lies in its enormous dramatic effect, its sharp conflicts, and the captivating beauty and propriety of its language”. presented by queensland youth orchestras

BITTERSWEET THE RISE OF THE AUSTRALIAN MUSICAL

MAX HURLEY: A DESIGNER’S LIFE

Until 4 April | Tony Gould Gallery Free Exhibition

28 April – 22 August Free Exhibition

While the very idea of musical theatre conjures images of bright lights and Broadway, did you know that Australians too have been creating new musicals since 1920?

Were you ever a young pyjama-clad pilgrim pressing your nose to the glass of a magical McWhirters Christmas window? A hip and happening 1960’s theatre goer? An opera fan in the 1980s and beyond, or more recently, an aspiring dancer performing with one of our foremost youth ballet companies? Chances are you’ve met Max. For more than 50 years, prolific designer and visual artist Max Hurley shared his prodigious talent with Queensland audiences and theatre makers. This exhibition explores his extraordinary theatrical legacy.

From Reedy River to Priscilla Queen of the Desert and The Boy from Oz to Bran Nue Day, discover the fascinating history of Australian made musicals and the remarkable stories of talent and tenacity that have brought truly Australian musicals to the stage. presented by qpac
