Graphic Media Design Suppose you want to announce or sell something, amuse or persuade someone, explain a complicated system or demonstrate a process. In other words, you have a message you want to communicate. Graphic designers work with drawn, painted, photographed, or computer-generated images (pictures), but they also design the letterforms that make up various typefaces found in movie credits and TV ads; in books, magazines, and menus; and even on computer screens. From humble things like gum wrappers to huge things like billboards to the T-shirt you’re wearing, graphic design informs, persuades, organizes, stimulates, locates, identifies, attracts attention and provides pleasure. The designer works with a variety of communication tools in order to convey a message from a client to a particular audience. Do you like working with computers? Are you a visual person? Do you appreciate something laid out well? Do you like to communicate with others? Are you creative or artistic? This career may be for you!

Beverly Tyler has been sewing since she was a small child with her mother and grandmother’s help. She made most of her own clothes, clothes for her husband and children, and even her dad’s suits. Thirty seven years ago Bev was asked to go to a quilting class at ABC Adult School and she found her calling. She has owned a quilt shop and taught classes at many shops. For the past ten years, Bev has been teaching quilting at ABC Adult School and just loves it. Kathy George has taught quilting at ABC Adult School since 1992. She designs her own patterns and still believes that basic skills are the best foundation in quiltmaking. Kathy also enjoys all types of art and crafts and owns “every art supply known to woman.”

GED Preparation and Practice Testing Before signing up for the official GED Exam, most adults find it helpful to enroll in a preparation program. Students are pre-tested in reading comprehension, math, and writing skills, and then assigned a course of study to remediate any weaknesses. The Learning Center has a variety of options for preparation: textbook-based coursework, multimedia DVDs, and interactive computer applications. Credentialed teachers and instructional aides are available at all times to assist as needed on an individual basis. GED Preparation students work at their own pace and attend as their schedules permit. Upon completion of their assigned course of study, students may take the official GED Practice Test, at no additional charge, to determine readiness and predict scores for the actual test. The vast majority of students who take GED preparation at ABC Adult School pass the actual exam.

The GED Testing program has been used for over 65 years to measure and evaluate the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue higher education, obtain specific jobs, gain promotions, and achieve personal goals. A GED credential is considered the equivalent of a high school diploma and is recognized throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It is offered in both English and Spanish. Students with special needs can apply for accommodations in advance. The General Educational Development exam is a national test designed to measure the skills and concepts usually learned during four years of high school. Most employers (95%) consider it the equivalent of a high school diploma. Community colleges accept this in lieu of a diploma. The GED exam is comprised of five separate tests: Language Arts/Writing, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts/Reading and Mathematics. To pass, you must receive a standard score of at least 410 on each of the five tests and an average standard score of 450 or higher. Those taking the GED for the first time must pre-register at the Adult School Main Office on Cuesta Drive (see map on page 39). The test fee is $150 for all five tests. Cash or credit card. The fee includes the GED certificate. The fee to re-take a previously failed test is $25 per test if registered through ABC Adult School. Examinees must be at least 18 years of age. A government issued photo ID is required. If at least 40 hours of preparation (Learning Center, Online or Distance Learning) is completed and a pre and post CASAS test is taken at ABC Adult School, a $40 voucher good toward the GED test fee or the GED test make-up fee will be given (September - December, 2013 test dates).
H igh school diploma students can complete most of their course work at home, using Internet-based, online classes. GED preparation students can review math via online courses. Students should plan to devote ten hours weekly to their online course work. A credentialed teacher is available during office hours by phone, email, and in person for assistance with course content or to troubleshoot technical problems. PArent Ed Department - Outstanding Instructors - Outstanding Program Janet Aasness graduated from U.C. Irvine with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She began her career teaching Elementary School in Long Beach. She has been part of the Parent Education Program at ABC Adult School since 1994. She first attended classes with her own 2 children and has served as a teacher since 1996. “The chance for parents and their children to learn together is what makes our program so special!” Julie Brookler began her career as a Kindergarten teacher. She has been teaching Parent Education classes for over 35 years and still keeps in contact with some of her former students. Several of them were preschoolers in her classes and are now back as parents of a new generation of preschoolers. Nancy Cham received a M.A. in Library Science from SUNY in Albany. She has been a Parent Education Instructor at ABC Adult School since 1979. Languages spoken: English, Mandarin, Tagalog. Terridawn Hernandez A former parent in the Parent Ed program and now a teacher in the program (credential - CSULB). Mrs. Hernandez is thrilled to work with parents and children, and share the vision of how vital parental involvement is for a child’s development. “I try to remind parents that the process is just as beautiful as the end product - and the process does take time. But... ENJOY these young days, because they go by so quickly.” Nancy Hom has been involved in the Parent Education Program at ABC Adult School since 1986. She attended the program for nine years as a parent. Believing strongly that parents as well as children gain so much from the program, she has been a Parent Education teacher since 1994. She teaches classes for parents with siblings and also for parents with pre-kindergarten children. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from UCLA and her Teaching Credential from CSU Northridge. Sandy Lakin has taught in the Parent Education program at ABC Adult School for over 27 years, working with parents and children ages 1-5 years, as well as teaching Kindergarten, first and second grades. She has a BA in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois and a Master’s Degree in Reading Education from CSU Long Beach. Teaching science has become her passion because science fosters the development of higher level thinking skills as children discover the wonders of the world around them. Barbara Milne has taught in the Parent Education program at ABC Adult School for over 20 years. She has a Bachelor Degree from USC, with an emphasis in music and psychology. She completed her teaching credential at USC, Calif. State Northridge, and UCLA, followed by Early Childhood Master’s classes at Calif. State Fullerton. Her passion is teaching valuable skills through children’s music and helping parents enjoy the magic of being their child’s lifelong teacher. “Children are unique. Our job is to discover their gifts, help them become the best they can be and share their gifts to make the world a better place.”
