$ %5,() +,6725< The Centinela Valley Union High School District was formed in 1905 and was originally known as the Inglewood Union High School District. The name was changed to Centinela Valley Union High School District on November 1, 1944. In 2010-11 CVUHSD had a high school student population of approximately 7,000. They attended either Hawthorne, Lawndale, or Leuzinger High School for the comprehensive secondary programs. Continuation and Independent Study Programs are offered at Lloyde High School. In addition, CVUHSD maintains an extensive adult education program that serves over 9,000 students. The feeder school districts of the Centinela Valley are Hawthorne, Lawndale, Lennox, and Wiseburn.

The Gates Millennium Scholars program selects only 1,000 talented students throughout the United States. The scholarships are good-through-graduation scholarships to use at any college or university of their choice. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program was established in 1999, and was initially funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The program has funded more than 13,000 scholars since the inception of the program. Last year, three students from Lawndale High School received the scholarship.

Denisse Huerta and Marisol Frausto are two proud “Olympians” after receiving news they had received the 2011 Gates Millennium Scholarship. “I went to my mailbox during spring break and saw the envelope; I was so nervous about opening it and when I did and saw that I had won, I just started crying,” said Marisol Frausto. “I was afraid to come to Leuzinger when I first came here, but my parents told me that a school does not define who you are, you define yourself! I am really proud to be an Olympian; we have a lot of great students here.”

Lawndale High School (LWHS) has been designated as one of California’s Most Distinguished Schools for 2009, and a finalist in the United States for the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST) Award. After meeting the rigorous criteria, only twenty five schools in the United States were named finalists, and Lawndale was one of them! Lawndale was also listed in U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 400 high schools in the Nation. For six consecutive years Lawndale students received the Gates Millennium Scholarship. A prestigious and valuable scholarship, only 1,000 students across the United States receive the honor each year. Students receiving the scholarship are attending Harvard, Williams College, and USC.

Leuzinger High School (LZHS) is the right choice if your child shows interest in the fields of multi-media or environmental careers. Two students from Leuzinger were awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship in 2011. The scholarship is only awarded to 1,000 students throughout the United States and is based on scholastic and leadership qualifications. Students that have attended LZHS have gone on to UCLA, Harvard, Howard University, Vanderbilt University, and more. LZHS AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is helping students in preparation for the SAT, ACT, PLAN, and PSAT. LZHS’s academic success continues to increase with increased CAHSEE passing rates in math English as well as decreasing failure rates in core subject areas. A new wing on the Leuzinger campus will be opened in the fall of 2011 and will include 44 new, state-of-the-art classrooms. Eight new chemistry and physical science laboratories will provide students with the latest equipment and facilities to prepare them for their selected careers. A new outdoor amphitheatre space, in addition to other green spaces, will provide outdoor areas where students can enjoy additional education space. In May of 2011, the Centinela Valley Center for the Arts was opened. Located on the campus of Lawndale High School the Center will be the home of the Academy of Media Arts. Students will obtain career preparation in the fields of media and design arts, performing arts, and production and managerial arts. The site is now qualified to be an Apple Authorized Training Center for Education. The school is also undergoing extensive construction and modernization thanks to Measure CV, a $98 school bond measure passed in November 2008. Hawthorne High School (HHS) is here to make your child succeed with programs like: Advanced Placement Classes HHS’ AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is helping students in preparation for SAT, ACT, PLAN, PSAT. School of International Business - An academy that began in 2009. Its students have competed twice in Ne w York City in an international competition with students from 40 different countries. They have gained recognition in best e-commerce website, honorable mention (top 10) in best catalogue and best sales pitch. Students are exposed to business strategies and practices that will prepare them for the international business world. School of Engineering - One of the first academies established in CVUHSD. The School of Engineering is a progressive learning community in which students of all backgrounds are given the skills and knowledge necessary to become what they choose. The Academy has become the mentor school for all Project Lead The Way schools in the South Bay area. Attendance and graduation rates among students in the academy are excellent. The Robotics program, a unique and specialized class that is part of the School of Engineering, exposes students to the fields of engineering and technology. Coupled with sponsors and mentors, students attain knowledge in the areas of animation, programming, innovation, machining, life and business skills. The Robotics Team has competed in many competitions and won many prestigious awards. School of Criminal Justice - This academy provides coursework that will prepare students for entrance to college or an entry level position in the criminal justice field including law enforcement, judicial system, counseling, correctional officer, morticians, crime scene investigators. School of Visual and Performing Arts - Students can choose from five different pathways: Dance, Vocals, Music, Drama, and Technical Theatre, and Art. Students have performed at different venues such as the Fullerton Jazz Festival and competition at Lake Arrowhead. Cougar Academy - Students participating in this academy receive special instruction in the core academic subjects delivered by instructors assigned to the program. Special attention is given to physical fi tness and character growth achievements. This innovative opportunity is made available via a unique partnership between the Cougar Academy and another “SCHOOL WITHIN A SCHOOL� type program: the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) program.

The skills and knowledge Melinda learned at Lawndale took her all the way to Stanford University. Melinda admits that going to such an elite University was intimidating at first. “I was so nervous! Here I am at this great school all by myself; it was a huge culture shock for me and I felt like I did not belong there.” Despite her anxiety, Melinda performed well her freshman year and thereafter. She accredits her success to the great teachers she had at Lawndale and the great learning environment at Stanford. “I had to make a transition into college academia, but I would have floundered if my high school teachers did not give me the tools I needed to succeed academically.” Community and Education have always been a priority of Melinda’s. Every summer she comes back home and works at the District Office to help any way she can. She also keeps in regular contact with her high school teachers, who still serve as mentors for her. Now a graduate of Stanford with a degree in Urban Education, Melinda is still very excited and eager to give back to the community that has given her so much. In the fall she will be studying at UCLA to get her Master’s Degree in Education and her teaching credential to become a high school Math teacher. “Education is very important,” says Grant, “There are so many students in America, especially in California, who can just slip through the cracks. I want to help make education better and I want to help make my community better.”

Dramatic Production

Melinda Grant like any other freshman, was nervous about her fi rst day at Lawndale High, however, she soon excelled inside and outside the classroom. Melinda was a very active member of AVID as well as the Black Student Union (BSU). It was those two groups, Grant says, that really kept her grounded and was a space where she could make friends and L-R Melinda at Graduation with develop her leadership Professor Michael Kahan skills. Melinda was also a star in the classroom. She consistently performed well in her honors and AP classes and earned top scores. Her hard work in class paid off as she was valedictorian of her graduating class. “It was never easy, and I made a lot of sacrifi ces,” says Melinda, “but in the end it really paid off and I am so proud of myself.”

Jasmin’s goal is to become a Family Practioner. “Education is very important to me, nothing can replace education. That is one thing that no one can take away from you,” Jasmin said. “I believe that you have to have faith in yourself.” She serves as vice-president of Ladies In Action, a club at Lawndale High School that promotes self esteem in women and promotes service to the community. She also volunteers at William Green Elementary School providing tutoring in reading. Her academic program is filled with AP classes that include AP Physics, AP US Government, and Student Government. “We expect great things from Jasmin,” said her counselor Oscar Pina. “She is an inspiration to all the students at Lawndale.” Congratulations Jasmin!

Mattel and Northrop Grumman have collaborated with CVUHSD to implement the High School Involvement Program for Centinela Valley students for over 30 years. Mattel and Northrop Grumman provide the facilities for students to receive vocational training in this internship program. HIP students are often offered jobs at the conclusion of their internship.

Co ngra tu la ti on s )RXU +DZWKRUQH +LJK VWXGHQWV ZHUH FKRVHQ IRU SUHVWLJLRXV VFKRODUVKLS Four students from Hawthorne High School have received the Sandpipers Scholarship for 2011; Michelle Medina, Melisa Munoz, Jennifer Viola, and Gabriela Del Real. Sandpipers has been providing financial assistance to college-bound students since 1941, the oldest continuing aid program in the South Bay. Supporting over 40 students per year, the program is unique in funding qualified recipients throughout the four continuous years of their undergraduate studies. In recent years, Sandpiper students have achieved an astounding graduation rate of 96%. Once students submit their applications, a Scholarship Committee conducts a rigorous review screening the applications followed by conducting personal interviews, before determining the candidates that are the most deserving of a Sandpipers Scholarship. Selection of the recipients is based on the students’ community and school involvement, academic achievement, leadership, financial need, and personal commitment to financially contribute to their education.

&5(',7 5(&29(5< 352*5$0 ² H In February (second semester 2009-10), CVUHSD implemented a district-wide credit recovery program called e2020. At-risk seniors lacking enough credits to graduate were offered the unique opportunity to participate in this special program. Parents and students are required to attend an information meeting and sign a contract which includes acceptable credit progress, student effort, behavior expectations, technology use, and attendance. Students work at their own pace with the guidance of a specially-trained teacher who keeps track of their progress in individualized, online courses, interacts with students on lessons and assessment and provides one-on-one or small group instruction.

Jenn Viola moved here 8 years ago from the Philippines. “I think I’m a well-rounded person; I think I’m smart but I am also a hard worker.” Michelle Medina has spent four years in AVID and was enrolled in the Mathematics and Science Upward Bound Program. “I have always associated myself with ‘like-minded peers’ meaning people who like doing things I like to do.” Michelle was also a winner of the Dell Scholarship. Gabriela Del Real said, “I have always had decent grades and I always have kept myself involved in things like Habitat for Humanity, working on Rose Parade floats, and volunteering in after school tutoring in Lennox Elementary schools.”

Student Conduct: Enrollment in Adult School assumes maturity, seriousness of purpose, and self-discipline. The basic rules and regulations of the school are enforced, including the district-wide dress code, drugs, dangerous weapons and non-smoking policy.

Average Yearly Salary: $30,000 Experience computer repair in a hands-on class. Students will analyze, troubleshoot, repair and resolve computer systems. The program will cover electronic equipment installation, basic diagnosis and repair operations on components. The courses begin with the basics of creating and delivering a presentation, including designing templates, text layout styles, and master slides. COMPUTER LITERACY You will become computer literate by using abbreviated versions of the following programs: Windows, Computer Basic Concepts, Keyboarding, and Basic to Intermediate Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. No previous experience required.

EXCEL 2003/2007 - Level 1, 2 & 3 Level 1 teaches basic Excel skills. It starts with creating spreadsheets with formulas, functions, and text, including formatting and graphics. The GED Tests serve only one purpose - to certify a high school-level of academic knowledge and skills. The GED Tests certify these competencies, no matter where or in what manner the individual learned them. Passing the GED Tests demonstrates the knowledge and skills of a high school graduate. Ninety-seven (97) percent of colleges and universities accept the GED credential as equivalent to a traditional high school diploma. (College Board: 2001) More than 90 percent of U.S. employers consider those who earned their GED diplomas the same as traditional high school graduates with regard to hiring, salary, and opportunity for advancement. (Society for Human Resource Management: 2002) According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those who have a high school diploma, including those with a GED diploma, earn $7,400 more a year than those who did not graduate from high school. The Literacy Program at Centinela Valley Adult School is designed to help students enhance their literacy skills in order to meet personal goals. The Center is open to all students over 18 who are able to communicate in English (may be second language). Students entering the program are given an individual assessment. A specific learning plan is developed for each student, based on the student’s goals, needs, and learning style. Reading, writing, listening, speaking, and math, from basic skills to high school diploma level, are taught according to each student’s personalized plan. Small focus groups, individualized instruction and independent work are available to all students. A variety of instructional methods are used. Fee: $40 registration fee per semester, cash only.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

English as a Second Language is offered in various levels of profi ciency: beginning literacy, low and high beginning, low and high intermediate, and low and high advanced. All courses include introduction to and practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English. Grammar and vocabulary are integrated with the basic life skills that students need to function in every day life. Life skills instruction covers basic communication, employment, health and safety, community resources, government and law, computation, and consumer economics topics such as housing, banking and nutrition. Knowledge about American culture and the usage of idiomatic English are stressed. Fee: $25 registration fee per session.
