From El Rancho Unified
A SEASONAL PUBLICATION OF THE EL RANCHO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT § SPRING 2014
El Rancho Unified School District is Emphasizing the “E” in STEM Recently, El Rancho Unified celebrated engineering week across the district. This issue will highlight many of the innovative and inspiring activities engaging our students. We recognize the importance of advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education in our schools, and that our students deserve engaging academic rigor that will enable them to compete in, and be a productive contributor to, a dynamic 21st century economy. What separates STEM from the traditional science and math education is the blended learning environment that shows students how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. It teaches students computational thinking and focuses on the real world applications of problem solving. According to a report by the website STEMconnector.org, by 2018, projections estimate the need for 8.65 million workers in STEM-related jobs. The manufacturing sector faces an alarmingly large shortage of employees with the necessary skills — nearly 600,000. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2018, the bulk of STEM careers will be: Computing – 71 percent Traditional Engineering – 16 percent Physical sciences – 7 percent Life sciences – 4 percent Mathematics – 2 percent With the implementation of Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, now is the time to help our schools develop robust and coordinated STEM programs and opportunities that are relevant and engaging to all students.

The Road to College Starts at Birney
Mrs. Castanon - Principal at Magee, Dr. Ventura-Rincon - AP at El Rancho HS, and Ms. Fuentes - Assistant Superintendent listen to student presentations. One of the main goals of the new Common Core State Standards is to address and reflect the knowledge and skills that our students need for success in college and careers. At Birney, it is our desire to provide our students the necessary foundations upon which they will build their lives, and develop their character and their academic readiness skills in preparation for college. That is why we believe the "Road to College Starts at Birney." Recently our students had the opportunity to research and study information about specific colleges and universities assigned to each of our classrooms. As a culminating activity to their research students had to prepare a college corner in their classrooms and present their information to a panel of site and district administrators. Many of the projects embedded student essays, drawings, technology, and the university's "fight song." Their presentations were done as a class or in small groups, and all students from our Transitional Kinder to our 5th Grade participated. Engineering Eagles
Rio Vista celebrated engineering week with a blast! Science Club students have been working hard preparing for the LA County Science Olympiad. Team members demonstrated projects ranging from a race car built entirely out of pasta, to extreme tower creations, to tennis ball launching catapults. Others explained the scientific skills they used to decipher the clues with science or study the classification of animals.
Rivera Elementary School Eagles soared this year for Engineering Week with lots of hands-on activities, as well as a special visit from an expert in engineering from JPL to get the students excited about science.
Engineering Week special guest presentation On Thursday, Mr. Eric Aguilar, an El Rancho graduate and current JPL engineer spoke with our 3rd-5th grade students about the path to a career in engineering. He described the different types of engineers and the roles and projects that they work on. He brought models and examples of the components used on the Mars Rover project that his team had played a part. Mr. Aguilar showed that it takes a lot of teamwork to make a project a success. He explained how the team must test and try again over and over until they know that it will work.
Second graders dabbled in a little physics designing and creating their own catapults, culminating in an afternoon of paper warfare to test their prototypes. Students learned the importance of engineering, as they launched their own airplane designs, challenging each other to races of speed and distance. They also put those engineering skills to use as they designed their own paratroopers, and the 1st graders built towers with shapes to see who could build the highest tower.
Students ended the week with some hands on science and design activities. During lunch time students designed, decorated and built water bottle rockets. Using drink bottles as a fuselage, students added wings, fins, nose cones and decorations. Then, students put their ideas to the test with a live launch party. The crowd of students joined together to count down the launch of each rocket. With each launch everyone learned a little more as to what makes a successful rocket. For more information... The students at the El Rancho Education Center (EREC) Adult Transition Program (ATP) had an exciting time celebrating Engineer’s Week. On campus and in the community, students conducted experiments in the field of rocket science. Newton’s laws of motion were one of the topics covered during the week with experiments such as the Balloon Blast-Off, an Egg Launch Challenge, and a Rocket Science Experiment. During the Balloon Blast-Off, students engaged in competitive balloon races which relied on air propulsion. Students were elated to see their balloon rockets accelerate down a raceway, relying upon the energy and engineering invested. The Egg Launch Challenge involved studentdesigned rocket ships which were launched from an elevated level to test the viability with which their raw egg passengers were protected. The students engaged in many trials which really pushed the rockets to their limits. Although some trials resulted in broken eggs, many were a great success. ATP students cheered for each egg that landed unscathed, as a result of their well crafted vessels. The last experiment conducted on campus consisted of a rocket assembled with students which was propelled by a combination of white vinegar and baking soda. The first trial prompted the students to try again. With ceaseless determination, students conducted their second rocket launch. The rocket blasted off into the air as everyone watched in awe. It was a great success. In addition, two different science-inspired Community-Based Instruction (CBI) trips were held. One trip was to the California Science Center and the other was to the Columbia Memorial Space Center. Students had a full day of education and training as they explored the science centers in Los Angeles. Many students had an opportunity to conduct experiments in the area of rocket science. Adult students were engaged in hands-on learning opportunities with the many experiments facilitated by the science centers. It is safe to say that everyone had a blast!
